Local breeders break puppy world record Many of the 17 little balls of fur born last month already have homes

A

local dog breeder has her hands full with puppies after setting a world record.

Penny Yelland-Kewin started breeding dogs in 2008 as a way to earn money while still staying at home with her children.

She and her husband, Rick, bought two Silver Lab puppies, Rain and Thunder, and started up All Weather Labs of Silver Pawz.

Then, on June 16th of this year, Rain broke the Guinness World Record for the most Labrador puppies in a single leader when she gave birth to 17 adorable little balls of fur.

Penny said Rain has always produced large litters, each one bigger than the last, but even Penny and her family were not expecting quite so many puppies at once.

“She was big, we knew she was big,” said Penny. “But after the thirteenth (puppy) came out . . . we could still see the bulge in her (belly). It was crazy.”

Usually, a lab litter is between five and eight pups, said Penny.

She added this was Rain’s fourth and final litter.

Rain was in labour for just under 20 hours delivering the 17 pups.

Penny said it was a tiring process for both the animals and humans involved.

Silver Pawz has a hands-on approach to breeding and delivery of puppies. Penny said that, as soon as a puppy is out, they are there to pull the sac off, give it to the mother to clean and get ready for the next puppy.

Then, once a pup is clean, they place it on a nipple to make sure it gets its first milk. This approach to delivery helps the process move along smoothly and helps to minimize the chance of injury to mother and puppies, said Penny.

Penny said she has never heard of any lab having such a large litter before.

In fact, when doing some Google research to see if Rain’s litter was a record, the only information she could find on a larger litter was a Mastiff who gave birth to 24 puppies, four of which

did not survive.

When Rain’s litter turned out to be so large, Penny contacted Guinness World Records asking if they were aware of what the record for most lab puppies born in a single litter was.

She was then informed that Rain’s litter was the record.

“I didn’t expect them to come back with, ‘Yes, it was a world record’,” said Penny. She added that research is currently being done

by Guinness to verify the record.

breed, right through to delivery, for Rain’s final litter before retirement.

Silver Pawz retires its dogs, who of course are also pets of the Yelland-Kewin family, at six years old and Rain just turned six this month.

In addition to Rain, the YellandKewin family has five other adult dogs - Thunder, Chinook, Breeze, Drizzle and Henry (the latter two are grown-up pups from Rain’s previous litters).

Penny said that she could not

ask for better family pets than labs. She added this is what made her decide on the breed when starting up a breeding operation.

“They are the best family dog ever,” said Penny. “They’re smart, they’re loyal, you couldn’t ask for a better dog.”

Now a little more than month after the delivery, mom and babies are doing well, said Penny.

She said Rain gave the family a scare recently when she needed to undergo emergency surgery at the vet to be spayed, but she is

now home and recovering well.

Penny added that the family planned to have Rain spayed anyway as she is now retiring from the breeding program.

“She’s going to be a happy dog.”

Currently, all but two females in the litter are spoken for. Penny said that the puppies will be ready to leave mom and go to their new homes in the next two weeks. It is always difficult to see the puppies go, added Penny.

Lacombe and area fire departments fight triple house blaze

BY BRIAN VOSSEN Lacombe Express Shortly after 5 a.m. on July 29th, Lacombe Fire Department responded to a fire in Henner’s Pointe that destroyed three homes.

Fire Chief Ed van Delden said the three homes involved in the fire were lost, but no one was hurt in the fire.

He said all of the occupants of the homes, and many of their neighbours, had evacuated prior to crews responding. van Delden said there were several bystanders in attendance when firefighters arrived on scene and it was difficult to tell which were residents of the affected homes, but it did not take them long to learn there was no one left in the buildings on fire.

Upon arrival, the fire, which started in a house in the middle of the block, was already quite involved and

van Delden said he could see heavy smoke coming from the two houses adjacent to it as well.

Firefighters made the decision to focus their efforts on attempting to save the adjacent homes and contain the fire to prevent it from spreading further.

“My concern was having it extend even beyond,” said van Delden.

He went on to say anytime firefighters engage in defensive firefighting tactics, it is likely the building will be lost.

He added the massive amounts of water needed to fight such fires can cause damage to homes as well.

“All that water comes down inside the house,” said van Delden. “So what isn’t consumed by fire, certainly is heavily damaged by water.”

One of the homes was completely burned down in the fire but the structures of other two adjacent to it,

while heavily damaged beyond saving, are still intact. van Delden said residents of those homes were even able to salvage some belongings after the fire was extinguished.

Damages are estimated at $3 million.

Lacombe requested mutual aid from Blackfalds and Clive fire departments after dispatch and upon arrival requested for Bentley to respond as well. Altogether, about 40 firefighters responded to the call and about 20 Lacombe firefighters were involved in the operation.

It is unknown at this time what caused the fire and the incident is under investigation.

However, van Delden said the fire is believed to have started in the attached garage of the most heavily damaged home, which was between the two others.

er himself, was at the scene for a time. “The training that they do is second to none, they are prepared,” said Christie. He added the fire department does a lot of work in the community outside firefighting as well.

“I just thank them so much for all that they do for our community.”

Christie also offered comfort for the families affected by the fire. “On behalf of the City, our hearts go out to the affected families in those three homes.”

Canadian Red Cross has also stepped in to provide aid to the families affected by the fire.

Red Cross is providing emergency food, clothing and accommodation for six adults and seven children for 72 hours.

In true Lacombian fashion, a donation collection for the families has already been set up as well.

City council delays decision on arena

BY BRIAN VOSSEN Lacombe Express Lacombe City council has deferred making a decision about how to approach renovating and upgrading the Lacombe arena.

Council voted on July 28th to defer making the decision until it could garner input from missing councilors at a later meeting.

Councilors Wayne Rempel and Bill McQuesten were absent from the July 28th meeting.

Council still did engage in a discussion about the proposed project to upgrade the arena, which would bring outdated sections of the building up to code and even upgrade existing areas like the current dress rooms for ice users.

Brenda Vaughan, community services director for the City of Lacombe, gave a presentation which broke down two options presented to council. One option would update and bring the build-

ing up to code at a cost of just over $10 million and the other would add the upgrades and expansion as well at a cost of over $14 million.

As council began their discussion, Councillor Peter Bouwsema voiced his support for the project.

“I like this project in terms that it is sustainable use of a building that we have had for many years,” said Bouwsema.

He added that, while he supports upgrading and maintaining the facility so that it can continue to be used, council is faced with an important and even difficult decision. Councillor Reuben Konnik said he felt the City should have sought public input regarding the project earlier.

He added residents who have spoken to him personally about the matter favoured only spending enough to bring the building up to code if council was intent on doing so. Konnik elaborated, saying he was aware of the advantag-

es of the second option, such as improving the cramped dressing rooms but felt the feedback he received suggested the community would rather the City spend only as much as necessary. He added even that cost still seemed quite high to him.

“Ten million dollars - I’m still taken aback by that. I mean we are going to build a police station

for less, it’s just a huge amount of dollars. But if you are going to spend that money, fine, but just bring that building up to code.”

Councillor Wayne Armishaw had similar thoughts to share.

“The input from users has been, to us individual councilors and the sampling of taxpayers that have spoken with me . . . nobody is really in favour of this,” said Armishaw. He added that some have raised the question if it wouldn’t be better to build a new facility.

Mayor Steve Christie did not agree the arena was not worth upgrading, saying the project reminded him of the Lacombe Memorial Centre, which was another project where the original building had been added onto in order to create a fantastic facility.

“We have taken a cinderblock building and turned it into a magnificent project with the LMC,” said Christie. “It reminds

me so much of the LMC.” As the debate went on, Councillor Grant Harder expressed his displeasure that council might make a decision without hearing from its two missing members.

“I’m disappointed that we are missing two of our councillors because their opinions are very valuable,” said Harder. Council then voted 4-1 to defer the decision with Konnik opposed.

It is important to note the entire cost of the project, whichever option is decided on, may not completely fall on the City, officials say. In her presentation, Vaughan said that the City plans to pursue other avenues of funding, such as grants and approaching partners to save the City from that burden. That is something Chief Administrative Officer Norma MacQuarrie also reminded council. “We absolutely want council to know (this is) a worst case scenario.” news@lacombeexpress.com

Lacombe County residents newly-made millionaires Bradley Kelly’s life changed in an instant.

The Lacombe County man bought a lottery ticket and a whole new path opened up before him.

Kelly and his wife Amanda won the $18 Million LOTTO 6/49 jackpot for the June 25th draw.

Bradley bought his usual $19 quick pick ticket from 7-Eleven in Claresholm while he was driving home from shopping.

But it wasn’t until about a week later that he stopped to check a few tickets.

He said that he couldn’t believe his luck after scanning the very first ticket on the Ticket Checker.

“I self-checked it and a bunch of numbers came up. It didn’t seem right.

“So I went to the retailer and I said, I think the machine is pooched,” Bradley recalled.

But there was no mistake - Bradley and Amanda’s ticket really had won $18,397,958.80.

“I WAS IN ABSOLUTE SHOCK. WHEN I SAW ALL OF THOSE NUMBERS, I JUST STARTED PACING BACK AND FORTH.” BRADLEY KELLY After having the retailer confirm the win, Bradley was beyond surprised.

“I was in absolute shock.

When I saw all of those

numbers, I just started pacing back and forth.”

The couple are still reeling from the win, but look forward to all the possibilities it creates as they consider their good fortune.

“We have many dreams, and probably even more now that we don’t even know of,” Amanda explained.

One thing is for certain, they will be taking a trip sometime soon.

“We never did have a honeymoon, so we should get on that,” Bradley said.

The lucky winning numbers for the June 25th draw were as follows - 1, 10, 24, 28, 39 and 45.

The ticket was sold at 7-Eleven Food Store 47011st St. West in Claresholm.

Maple Dr. construction project to begin shortly

BY KALISHA MENDONSA Lacombe Express Maple Dr. will be receiving some well-deserved updates to make the road a little friendlier to both motorists and pedestrians. “First and foremost, Maple Drive is long over-

due for paving. A primary outcome for this project is making those road repairs and actually paving the road. The repairs are expected to extend the life of Maple Drive approximately 15-20 years,” said Engineering Services Manager for the City of Lacombe Jordan Thompson.

Thompson added that the other major objective for the

project is creating pathways and sidewalks for pedestrians in the area. “At present, students and residents must walk on the road surface itself to navigate that corridor and the road is quite narrow at points and pedestrians must share the road with motor vehicles.”

The project began in 2013 when the City of Lacombe approached the Canadian University College (CUC) and the Seventh Day Adventist Church to define a solution that would work for all parties. Last week, bidding was completed and a contract was decided on. This means construction can begin in as little as a week.

Work north of the physical education centre of CUC is expected to be complete before the end of August. The remainder of the work south of the complex is expected to be completed closer to mid-October.

Citizens are reminded all construction timelines are tentative, and are subject to change due to weather and other factors.

“One of the benefits is that there will be a fresh road surface, and that’s something that many residents and motorists have come to the City and mentioned that it’s obviously overdue for paving.

“It’s something that will benefit the community. The pedestrian pathways also certainly provide a separate area for them to utilize so that they don’t have to walk on the roadway surface and share the road,” said Thompson.

The goal of updating Maple Dr. is to help save the road from damage caused by the boost in traffic since the closure of the Hwy. 2 access north of 58th St. In addition to the Maple Dr. changes, the City is working on the annual edits of the Ten Year Capital Plan. This document is reviewed each year to ensure necessary changes can be budgeted for, planned and set in motion.

POLICE BRIEFS LOCK UP VEHICLES The RCMP in Blackfalds over the past two weeks have seen an increase in the number of thefts from vehicles and theft of vehicles.

In most cases the RCMP are learning the vehicles were left unlocked and in the case of stolen vehicles, the keys were inside the vehicle.

When it comes to theft of vehicles and theft from vehicles, these are crimes of opportunity. Thieves are more likely to go for the unlocked vehicles and it is even more enticing when the keys are inside.

During the last spree of thefts from vehicles in Blackfalds, when subjects were arrested, investigation revealed they had checked approximately 70 vehicles in total.

Out of the 70 vehicles approximately 25 were left unlocked, and these ended up being the victims.

Police would like to remind all residents of the area to ensure they lock their vehicles and remove keys to ensure they don’t become another victim.

Blackfalds RCMP Detachment Commander Ken Morrison said the detachment will also be continuing to do

foot patrols where members check cars and lock those they find unlocked, leaving a card to explain the program.

PAIR ARRESTED IN THEFTS In the early morning hours of July 27th, members of the Innisfail RCMP Detachment were dispatched to a complaint of car prowling in Penhold. The investigation resulted in the arrest of two males responsible.

An 18-year-old Lacombe male and 19-year-old Blackfalds male were arrested for Possession of Stolen Property Obtained by Crime Under $5,000.

The pair has been released to appear in Red Deer Provincial Court in early September.

Items seized included a Noco Genius G3500 battery charger, an Apple iPhone, a JVC KD-S5050 stereo deck, a Bezel 1312 watch and two gold rings studded with diamonds.

RCMP are requesting anyone in the municipality of Penhold that may have been a victim of theft from their vehicle on the weekend of July 26-27th, to contact the Innisfail RCMP at 403-2273342 to identify and claim the listed items.

OPINION Bill 11 will bolster transparency Parents of children who have died in provincial care can now make the names and faces of their deceased loved ones public after an automatic publication ban was removed last week.

On July 23rd, the Alberta government approved Bill 11, allowing parents like Crystal Crier to do something they have wanted to do for a long time, to put a name and face to their children’s story rather than have them exist as a nameless shadow.

Kyleigh, Crystal’s daughter, was placed in an Edmonton group home in October of last year because of her struggles with suicidal thoughts and addictions.

Despite doing this in an attempt to help her daughter, Crystal was heartbroken when she learned that Kyleigh hung herself in April.

Crystal wanted to make what happened to her daughter, who Crystal has said did not get the help she needed, public, but couldn’t do so until now.

While the media was able to report on the unfortunate death, they were prohibited from printing

Kyleigh’s photo or name despite the wishes of her mother.

What happened to Kyleigh is a terrible incident that cannot be undone, but perhaps a small silver lining can come out of this situation now that Bill 11 has been approved.

In fact, Crystal said that she wept tears of joy when she heard the bill had passed.

Considering the desires of parents should always come first when it comes to their children; the government never should have been able to trump the desires of parents who wanted their children’s names made public in the first place.

Now that this error has been corrected however, the government should be applauded for its efforts.

Too often, we tend to focus on the negative decisions made by our governments. While it’s easy to say that is because governments make more bad decisions than good ones, more likely the truth is bad things are always easier to find than good ones.

Governments are made up of people too, so they make mistakes

like everyone else, a lot of them.

That is why it is so important to recognize when the leaders of our communities make the right decisions.

Alberta’s government has definitely made the right decision by approving Bill 11. This is a step towards government transpar-

ency, something everyone in this province supports and something we have seen far too seldom in our provincial government lately.

With the Alberta PC Party leadership race underway and all three candidates pledging for a more transparent government, let us hope it is the first step of many.

This week, I would like to combine the two. Let’s talk about sumo wrestlers and how they can help you get fit.

Sumo wrestlers’ bulk is often mistaken for flab.

But, the truth is, they are fit, not fat.

World Sumo Champion Byamba Ulambayar is 6 ft. 1 and weighs 360 lbs.

He admits he’s not in as great of shape now, but when he was 18 and weighed 330 lbs. he only had 11% body fat.

Yes, it is important for sumo wrestlers to be big. However, it is also important that they are strong and in shape.

It takes a lot of energy and effort for sumos to push and throw their

opponents around the ring like they do and they wouldn’t be able to do it effectively if they were fat and flabby.

Physical activity uses energy.

Sumo wrestling is no different.

That means sumo wrestlers need to eat to fuel themselves. They also need to eat a lot to gain the large mass necessary for the sport.

As any athlete will tell you, when eating lots of food to fuel yourself for physical exertion, it’s not only important to eat lots - it’s important to eat lots of healthy foods.

Sumos accomplish this by consuming massive amounts of a Japanese stew called chankonabe.

Chankonabe is a one-pot dish that contains ingredients which provide sumos with basically everything they need.

There is no set recipe for chankonabe, and it can be prepared with anything the cook has on hand.

Typically though, ingredients include high amounts of meats for protein and vegetables for vitamins.

It is also cooked in a fish broth, which means less nutrients get wasted in the cooking process.

Nutrients that would be lost

if the ingredients were fried or grilled instead mix with the broth and can still be absorbed.

Sumos do a lot of weird things to gain mass too, like working out on empty stomachs, only eating once or twice a day, drinking beer with all their meals and sleeping after every meal. Most fitness gurus in this country will probably recommend against those things, but there are still a few things we can take away from the habits of sumos.

It sounds weird, but sumos kind of embody the basic equation of fitness: healthy food plus rigorous exercise equals fitness. The important thing to remember is that these things go together.

You can’t succeed by having one without the other.

You can eat all the food you want, but as most of us know to our own cost, you are not going to reap any benefits by sitting on the couch.

Instead, you are more likely to end up looking like a very unsuccessful sumo wrestler.

Exercise doesn’t work without food either.

Without proper fuel for physical activity, you are going to feel pretty

miserable while working out pretty quick and your body won’t have the nutrients it needs to do anything constructive with the exercise either.

Secondly, keep in mind that you need healthy food and quality exercise to be successful in getting fit.

You need to eat to get fit, but you also need to get healthy.

Eating fast food and candy bars isn’t going to give your body anything beneficial to work with.

Working out is important too.

No matter what your choice of exercise is, make sure you are doing it enough and doing it properly so that you actually get something out of it.

Finally, if you do these things right, you will enjoy it.

Going back to Ulambayar again, he will tell you that he eats Chankonabe every day not just because he should, but because he likes the way it makes him feel and feels the same way about sumo wrestling.

Every time Ulambayar wakes up after a long workout and a good meal, he says he feels stronger, which is an encouraging feeling for anyone. news@lacombeexpress.com

‘Sanctioned’ extortion

Lacombe Days deemed a success On behalf of the Lacombe Days Association Committee, I would like to express our sincere appreciation to all groups, volunteers and organizations that contributed to another successful year of Lacombe Days.

A great thank you to the generosity of our local business sponsors that allow us to provide a weekend of entertainment to the people of Lacombe and surrounding area at very little if any cost.

Without these sponsors Lacombe Days would not be what it is today!

This year being my first year on the committee I would like to thank Peter and Lorraine Bouwsema and family for their patience mentoring myself through this past year.

Their heart, pride and passion for their community and their work ethic is what has kept this event going these past several years.

Peter and Lorraine collected a group of volunteers consisting of Val Depauw, Charlie Street, Wayne Rempel, Mark Visscher and recently Ellen Corea.

Thanks to all! Some of these volunteers, because of changes in their lives or employment commitments, will have a reduced roll on the committee.

Therefore I would greatly appreciate anyone interested in being part of the committee to call myself, Chris Ross, at 403-357-8810.

For myself it was a very positive experience getting out and meeting the business community not only to hear views and opinions to further enhance Lacombe Days but also hearing all the other positive ideas, such as possibly having the City of Lacombe construct some beach volleyball courts in our parks or playground areas for the teenage groups.

While on the topic of that area, possibly

for 2015 there could be ideas such as a road hockey tournament at the race track at Michener or an Amazing Race scavenger hunt theme on the City bike and walking trails and a co-ed slow pitch tournament. But to continue to add events obviously takes groups, organization and volunteers. With the hope of receiving government grants (since we are now a registered association) and continuing to approach local businesses earlier such as November or December to be part of the 2015 budgets, the committee will hopefully have a higher budget to work with in 2015.

Perhaps the committee, through a donation to a group or organization such as UTurn, C4, FCSS or whatever other groups in the community could put their cause back into the community, and could be part of enhancing the whole community at a low cost.

Win-win for all, the bottom line is utilizing all possible resources to make Lacombe Days bigger! The City of Lacombe has a lot of recreational facilities, let’s use them all!

Just a note: the 2014 parade unfortunately didn’t have bands as in the past.

It was out of our control as several were attending a competition in Europe.

As a committee we are event planners, marketers and advertisers. There were 19,000 brochures printed (of which 17,500 were mailed) advertising in the two local papers for two weeks, radio advertising on three local stations, as well as promotions through the web site and facebook. We try in every way to recognize the sponsors and get all the information out on all events.

The 2015 Lacombe Days will be the last weekend of July after the Red Deer Westerner Days. Hope to see you all there!

I heard on the news recently that a gentleman from Richmond, California has come up with a novel but controversial method for dealing with the City’s inordinately high homicide rate.

The strategy, from what I have learned, is to identify the members of the local criminal population most likely to engage in ‘gun violence’ and through a combination of mentorship and monetary reward, entrench in their psyche the benefits of pro-social behaviour.

Seventeen people in Richmond were identified as the criminals most likely to offend with firearms.

They were paid by the City to cease and desist their criminal behaviour.

They are compelled to develop a ‘life map’ and work with mentors.

They are encouraged to perceive themselves as having earned their pay by not shooting someone (sanctioned extortion).

They are compelled to attend a training program for 16 months before they start to earn the $1,000 per month payment.

The director of safety is an impassioned and I believe properly motivated man whose ascendance to directorship was driven by the perceived merits of his proposed program.

A dedicated criminal by his very nature will with expressions of most sincere gratitude accept the handouts and then at an opportune time pull on a balaclava and rob their benefactor once again.

Out here in rural western Canada

we probably lack the sophistication necessary to appreciate the complexities of such an apparently bewildering cosmopolitan problem.

When a fox invades the henhouse we do not blame the fox for being a fox, his appetite must be satisfied in some way.

But we do not pay the fox to stay out of the henhouse.

If that illustration seems casuistic, perhaps asking this question will frame the problem more clearly: how many times do you have to feed a rattlesnake before you can pet it?

Now I suppose I will be accused of sophistry.

How about this; set a trap by henhouse – catch fox – administer an unpleasantness of sufficient intensity to lodge event in fox’s brain – turn fox loose.

Presto, rehabilitation of the most genuine and permanent kind.

My attempts at sarcasm and humour in the preceding paragraph I hope only slightly mask the revulsion that a person of normal conscience and intelligence should feel at having to consider such a bizarre and obscene solution to what is such a grievous problem.

I must add that the statistics indicating the success of this program cannot be refuted on prima facie merit.

My contention is that human nature can only be temporarily adjusted or altered by reward but never truly corrected by that means.

Reasons why our government need to address poverty now Canadians might be surprised to learn that 86 families now hold more wealth than the poorest 11.4 million Canadians.

Is this a Canada to be proud of ?

According to many studies, the Canadian poverty rate remains high. A recent OECD report shows that the very rich are taking an ever greater share of income. And a new study from three leading Canadian academics shows the rich obscure the total extent of their individual wealth through private companies, which means they are even richer than we thought.

Why should we care?

Because poverty and inequities hurt all of us in the long run.

They erode social cohesion and create a burden on all taxpayers to pay for poverty reduction, healthcare services, unemployment, crime and homelessness.

Our economic system and wellbeing are at risk of serious deterioration unless we take action now.

Here’s what the evidence says about the devastating outcomes of poverty: poorer health, more chronic disease, more avoidable deaths, social injustice, increasing demand and costs for healthcare services and reduced pro-

ductivity of the workforce. On a large scale and over the longterm, inequality can also slow the economy and erode democracy, political and social stability.

Those in the bottom half of the economic pecking order with stagnant incomes grow resentful, envious, hopeless and distrustful of business leaders and governments. And so we have social unrest such as the Occupy movement. How did we get here?

For years, most Canadian governments have followed an agenda based on austerity.

They have lowered taxes and cut programs to balance budgets with a focus on economic growth and ‘trickle down’ economics.

The 2014 report of the Office of the Parliamentary Budget Officer shows that cuts to income tax, GST, corporate taxes and others amount to governments having $30 billion less to spend per year.

For the most part, this has meant fewer income supports for the poor and inadequate investments in social housing, early child development, education, healthcare and infrastructure development (with the exception of the federal stimulus program in response to the 2008 recession).

The wealthy have become

wealthier with the help of a higher rate of returns on capital (over incomes), tax breaks for capital gains and estates, and inadequately controlled offshore banking. Economist Thomas Piketty points out these flaws in our economic system are not a reason to abandon the system itself, which has also led to abundant innovation and wealth creation.

The solution is to moderate the excesses of the system so prosperity is more equitably shared by the entire population.

Even the IMF, which has pushed austerity agendas for decades, has stated growing inequity is bad for economies and judicious redistribution is beneficial for economic growth.

Research has shown countries such as Iceland, Poland and Sweden, which have invested in programs like health and education in the last decade, have made better recoveries following the recession than those that followed an ‘austerity’ agenda.

Economists call what we need ‘a judicious redistributive approach’ – that is, to raise government revenues via natural resources, taxes on the wealthy (income, estates, capital), regulation of offshore tax havens and

taxes on externalities, such as pollution, tobacco, alcohol and sugar. Governments should direct these revenues toward social investments such as income support, education, healthcare and infrastructure.

Businesses can help reduce inequities by paying their share of corporate taxes and having a triple bottom line – people, planet and profits – with a living wage for their staff, co-ownership and profit sharing policies. The public can vote with their wallets and support such businesses.

We are paying dearly for inaction. It would cost taxpayers less to eradicate poverty than to continue to pay for poverty-related policing, corrections, housing and healthcare. Businesses and governments must take measures now to reduce poverty and inequities. It is time for concerned citizens to demand action.

The bulk of the improvement project consists of rehabilitating the pavement surface; selectively repairing base failures; installing curbs and gutters; and building pedestrian corridors (sidewalks & trail), including a pedestrian-activated crossing to the CUC’s Physical Education Centre.

Construction on the project started in late July. Major work adjacent to the CUC main campus is expected to be complete by the end of August, and work south of the campus to be finished by October 15, 2014.

The Becoming a Community Builder Program has set out to increase the leadership capacity of Rural Alberta and LACOMBE & LACOMBE COUNTY have been selected to participate!!

Bruns Pond public art to honour LacombeRikubetsu twinning As part of the City of Lacombe’s Percent for Art public art policy, the Lacombe Art Collection Committee has commissioned artist Larry Hunter to create a Japanese-themed sculptural installation for the Bruns Park Pond – a Bonsai waterfall floating island.

The City of Lacombe is currently requesting proposals for the annual Financial Services Audit.

All interested parties are invited to pick up a full RFP at City Hall beginning immediately. Packages can also be acquired through the City of Lacombe website at www.lacombe.ca.

The Japanese theme has already been established in the park by the existing torii. Larry Hunter’s winning design pays tribute to the close relationship between the two cities and to Bonsai, a popular Japanese art form.

The hollow concrete base will be sculpted and coloured to resemble a jagged rock island and will house a water pump and filter. The “tree” will be cut from heavy 1/2 inch plate steel and left to oxidize naturally to a dark rust-red colour. The “leaf” forms and spillways will be cut from plate aluminum and will maintain a natural silver gray patina.

This service will provide Financial Audit for the City of Lacombe, Lacombe Public Library, North Red Deer Water Services Commission, North Red Deer Wastewater Services Commission and the Lacombe Regional Fire Association for the years 2014-2018.

“The Lacombe Art Collection Committee received a number of submissions to review and unanimously chose this aesthetically pleasing fountain for Bruns Park, to help beautify our city and to recognize our twinned municipality of Rikubetsu, Japan,” said Recreation and Culture Manager Sandi Stewart.

The sculpture is an active solar-powered water feature representing a dramatic, stylized Bonsai tree. The water feature will introduce sound and visual interest to the pond and park as well. It will stand approximately five feet above the water line on a flotation platform. Solar panels will be mounted to be as inconspicuous as possible.

Public Notices

Water will be pumped via a steel tube running up the back of the trunk to the two highest leaf spillways and allowed to pour down onto the lower leaves and back into the pond. The randomness of the splashing will be a part of the design.

“Public art is a key component to the attractiveness, identity, and the livability of our city,” said Chief Administrative Officer Norma MacQuarrie. “We are eager to beautify our civic amenities, and this project is a fine example of achieving this goal.”

Any interested parties must submit proposals and confirm City Hall’s receipt of them on or before 3:30 p.m., August 15, 2014.

SPORTS Annual Upward Soccer Camp builds skills and faith

BY BRIAN VOSSEN Lacombe Express This week, several young soccer players in Lacombe are taking some extra time to develop their skills as part of the seventh annual Upward Soccer Camp.

Upward is a Christian soccer camp focused on developing fundamental skills and tying a faith message to athleticism.

Tracy Everett is a volunteer coach who has been involved in Upward since it started in Lacombe.

He is also a member of the Lacombe Pentecostal Church, which organizes the camp each year.

Everett said he started coaching when his son started playing soccer.

When Upward got started up, Everett said he saw it as an opportunity to enhance the community’s existing soccer programs “It just makes an amazing change in the kids,” said Everett.

Being able to share his passion for soccer is something that Everett enjoys about coaching with the camp.

“It’s just an amazing feeling to see a sport that I love being expanded into children’s lives,” said Everett. “I just love being on the field with the kids and teaching them a sport that I love and seeing them grow in the sport.”

Some players in the camp don’t even play soccer or any sports throughout the year, said Everett.

However, they still show up every summer for a week of soccer.

Through Upward, Everett has seen some of these players, who don’t play or sometimes even like soccer outside of the camp, make friends and connections within the community that they wouldn’t otherwise.

At Upward, Everett coaches the older players, the ones in Grades 5 and 6.

He said at this level, players tend to make the decision about whether or not go get serious with their competition.

Outside the camp, Everett coaches those seriously competitive players as a coach with Lacombe Minor Soccer.

He said that the camp is great for developing serious, competitive players as well as having fun.

Everett said he believes strong fundamentals are also key to developing a strong, competitive player.

He said Upward is great because it focuses on honing those fundamental skills.

“If you don’t know how to dribble a ball, pass a ball properly or even kick a ball properly, it’s very difficult to become very competitive,” said Everett.

In addition to team coaches like Everett, the camp also utilizes ‘station’ coaches, who specialize in coaching drills at different stations that focus on each of the fundamental skills.

Zone 4 softball team takes bronze at Summer Games

BY BRIAN VOSSEN Lacombe Express Brooke McBurney and Victoria Derwantz are returning to Lacombe with some new hardware.

At the Alberta Summer Games held in Airdrie over the past weekend, McBurney and Derwantz, as well as the rest of the Girls Zone 4 Softball Team defeated the Zone 3 team to secure the bronze medal.

Zone 4 Coach Clayton Cassidy said that the team did well considering that most of the players had not been on a team together before.

He said that coaching staff encouraged the players to develop relationships with the other players they did not know and while the team did not have deep chemistry, they were able to gel and function as a team during the tournament.

“To be honest, I don’t know if you ever get to a point where you have a ‘team chemistry,’ per se,” said Cassidy.

Both McBurney and Derwantz agreed.

“I thought we did really well considering how we had just met, for a new team,” said Derwantz.

“We did great as a team for not really knowing each other too well going into

it and we just really connected over the week,” added McBurney.

Cassidy said that not only was the Zone 4 team made up of players who hadn’t played together before, it was made up of players from nine different communities who had played varying levels of ball.

He said that the teams that placed second and first were mostly made up of players from the same community who played on the same club team.

Zone 4 was made up of more younger players than the other zones as well, said Cassidy.

Given that, he and the girls were very happy with their placement.

“I would say we ended up where we should have,” said Cassidy.

Derwantz agreed. “I thought we did really well winning bronze.”

Cassidy actually said that, after seeing the talented opponents in the first game, he was a little concerned for the Zone 4 team.

However, the girls pulled together and showed that they could compete with the best Alberta had to offer.

“The first game that we played, when I saw the talent level we were up against, I thought we were going to be in trouble,” said Cassidy. “But the girls dug down and we just kept getting stronger as the weekend went on.”

McBurney was the only catcher on the team - both her coach and her teammate commented on her impressive endurance throughout the competition.

“Brooke was our only catcher, that’s a big burden in itself to have to catch all five

games,” said Cassidy. “She’s a trooper. She played well and hung in there. Her hand was hurting from catching so much but she stuck with it.”

Derwantz was one of the top pitchers and batters for the team, said Cassidy.

He added she was also near the top of his batting order in each inning.

Cassidy added that, in addition to playing well on the field, both Derwantz and McBurney showed character outside their athletic conduct.

“Furthermore, outside of the way they played, they carried themselves with class,” said Cassidy.

Cassidy said this is the first Alberta Summer Games he has experienced as either an athlete or a coach.

He said that he also wanted his players to be able to experience everything the Alberta Summer Games had to offer, making sure that all players on the team got to play and enjoy the experience.

“Medals were pretty secondary,” said Cassidy. “We felt it was more about the experience and not about medaling.”

McBurney agreed. “A small part is about ball,” she said.

“It was also about meeting people from different zones and getting to know everyone.”

This was a different approach from some of the other teams there, added Cassidy.

He said that it was clear other teams were there solely to compete, with coaches playing only their strongest players and placing curfews on the teams. news@lacombeexpress.com

Jeremy Rietze, 18, of Lacombe was dressed up like a million dollars on July 23rd in Olds at a stop on the McLennan Ross Junior Tour, presented by Crowe MacKay. Rietze and Jacob Thomas of Edmonton Country Club battled it out over the immaculate fairways and slick, sloping greens of the Olds Central Highlands Golf Club.

Thomas also qualified for Wolf Creek and they will be joined by Carter Graf of Red Deer (82) from the flight for boys born in 2000 and later, along with Wild Card qualifiers Curtis Reynolds (80) of the PPC and Justin Loro (79) of Country Hills.

Another solid field of 11 junior girls was on hand as well, but the end result was much like many of the tour events so far this summer.

Clare McMahon of Balmoral continued her fine play with a bounce-back round of 7-over par 80. McMahon had stumbled early in her round with a 44 on her front 9, but rebounded beautifully with an even-par 36 on her back nine for the 80.

The long-hitting McMahon finished three shots clear of Innisfail’s Courtney Dickson, with Annabelle Aykroyd of Silver Springs and Alicia Easthope of Sandpiper tied for third on 84.

Dickson and Aykroyd snagged the two Tour Championship spots up for grabs.

ARTS & LEISURE Blues master brings magic to Red Deer this weekend Kenny ‘Blues Boss’ Wayne gears up for Friday and Saturday Fratters shows

BY MARK WEBER Lacombe Express Kelowna-based pianist Kenny ‘Blues Boss’ Wayne truly has the world as his stage. The acclaimed musician – a master in the boogie, funk and New Orleans-influenced R&B – performs at Fratters Speakeasy in Red Deer Aug. 1-2nd.

He’ll be serving up the top-notch cuts from his latest project, Rollin’ With the Blues Boss which was released this past April. The project, produced and recorded in Vancouver by Tom Lavin, marks his second CD for Stony Plain. It also features guest appearances on one track each from Eric Bibb and singer Diunna Greenleaf.

“This latest one is a little more into the storytelling” he explains during a recent chat from his home. “Most of the things I write are pretty much hypothetical – they could happen to anyone. But this one is a little more real for me.” That includes everything from being pick-pocketed in France to overcoming typical hardships in relationships.

But whether tunes spring from his imaginative goldmine of creativity or tap into real-life experience, the exuberance and energy are unstoppable. And he never takes a bit of it for granted – he’s grateful to his legions of fans around the world for taking the time to listen.

He’s also carrying on something of a treasured tradition.

“I know it’s a classic way of playing piano, but many of the original people that played that way are no longer with us.”

Born in Spokane in 1944, Wayne’s family settled in Los Angeles where the West Coast blues scene was bubbling over.

Showing a gift for playing piano early on, Wayne was encouraged by his preacher dad to play gospel.

With folks like Lloyd Glenn, Amos Milburn and Floyd Dixon ruling the airwaves in the early 1950s, it was a tall order for the youngster to steer clear of ‘the devil’s music’. But by his early teen years, Wayne was playing dozens of gigs in the early ‘60s — including a 1961 appearance at the Alpha Bowling Club with the great Jimmy Reed.

As Wayne recalls with a chuckle, “My dad grabbed my mom with one hand and ran up to the stage and yanked me off the

piano bench and led us through the kitchen and out the back exit. That was pretty well the end of my blues career for over 20 years.”

In 1974, Wayne moved to San Francisco to work with R&B band Earth Rise. Stints with other bands continued but disco was starting to impact the live music scene.

Wayne put together an R&B revue called The Mighty Ken Explosion and headed to Canada. The band broke up in the late 1980s, and Wayne settled in Vancouver.

He soon won a strong reputation on the B.C. and prairies club scene.

His full transformation into ‘Blues Boss’ came following a 1994 tour of Europe.

His longtime passion for boogie-woogie and blues paid off in the form of star treatment from piano-loving European music fans, particularly while in Spain.

“I was playing all of this romantic music – trying to fit in with the Spanish culture by doing all these Spanish songs. However, the place I played in was a British pub and they weren’t too keen on being romantic.

They wanted to rock.

“So at that point, a gentleman from Scotland came up to me and asked if I knew any blues. I said yes, and he said, ‘I bet you would do a good job’. So I started playing blues, and lo and behold my tip jar started filling up. I noticed people were really responding.”

At that time, those same kinds of tunes weren’t really going over well back home in Vancouver. There were stricter ideas about what was wanted. But Spain changed everything and suddenly there were no limits in Wayne’s mind.

That period also opened up so many doors internationally – a huge unexpected blessing, he adds. “Playing this type of music, I never had any clue this would ever happen. I remember talking to my wife about the changes that had been happening – if you were able to play on a penthouse overlooking Vancouver, you were somebody,” he chuckles.

“But the music I do now has kind of reached out world-wide. People want to experience it, and that’s been a real treat for me to have them wanting to hear my blues and boogie-woogie piano.” After he plays Red Deer, he’s off to Edmonton then flies to France for a string of shows. Then it’s

“When you start crossing oceans and seeing different cultures, it’s just mindboggling. It’s so fascinating to me.”

Over the years, three releases for the indie Canadian label Electro-Fi were all nominated for Juno Awards — and his 2006 release Let it Loose was a Juno winner.

Further to those, he released An Old Rock on a Roll in 2011, with the project earning him a Blues Foundation nomination for the Pinetop Perkins Piano Award

and a 2012 Living Blues Awards for Best New Contemporary Blues Recording of 2011 as well as one naming him ‘Most Outstanding Keyboard Musician.’

As to the latest CD, musical highlights abound.

What has happened in the last few decades is multinational companies have spent hundreds of millions of dollars demonizing butter and praising the virtues of margarine. They’ve proved Madison Avenue advertising works as both the public and doctors have been persuaded margarines containing polyunsaturated fats were the way

to cardiac health.

Now it appears lobbies for manufacturers of margarine, along with years of governmental health advice, have been wrong.

But isn’t it interesting neither of these organizations has apologized to the public for subjecting them to unhealthy trans fats for years.

What is equally appalling is that for years there’s been a carte blanche acceptance of butter demonization by so many researchers and the medical profession.

Butter is rich in Vitamins A, E and K2 along with minerals such as zinc,

copper, manganese and selenium. The saturated fats in butter increase the good cholesterol HDL and help to guard against bad cholesterol LDL. Butter provides the perfect balance between omega-3 and omega-6 fats as too many people are eating an excessive amount of omega-6 fatty acids.

Government and manufacturers should have listened to Leonardo da Vinci when he wrote 500 years ago that, “Nature never breaks her own laws.”

1/2 tsp. olive oil Pinch of freshly cracked black pepper 4 flatbreads (Naan bread works great, or your favorite pizza crust) 16 slices Brie, thinly sliced (we use Little Qualicum Cheeseworks from Parksville) 1/2 cup mozzarella, shredded 6 heirloom tomatoes, cut in half Heat 1/2 cup light olive oil over medium heat and add 1 tsp. chopped garlic and chili flakes.

When the garlic is starting to turn golden, remove from the heat and allow to cool. Set this chili oil aside.

Add the bacon pieces to a pan and slowly cook over medium heat. Stir occasionally to ensure it doesn’t clump together. When the bacon is crispy around the edges, remove from heat, cool and drain excess fat.

Set these bacon bits aside.

Dress the zucchini with the white balsamic vinegar and 1/2 tsp olive oil, and

a pinch of salt and fresh cracked black pepper.

Barbecue over high heat, placing them flat side down. Set aside this as well.

Season the prawns with a touch of oil, lemon juice and fresh cracked black pepper. Set aside.

Lay the flatbread bases out on a clean countertop, and add 1 tbsp. of reserved chili oil to each one, spreading the oil out to the edges.

Add the sliced Brie and mozzarella, followed by the bacon bits, trying to spread the ingredients out evenly.

Arrange the grilled zucchini overtop.

Add the reserved seasoned/raw prawns, but don’t overlap them so they cook evenly.

Finally, cut some small local heirloom tomatoes in half and place them over the top.

Bake at 400F for six to eight minutes.

Pets make a house a home even more than design This Friday we say goodbye to our family dog, Domino. It is a sad day to see a dog who has been a huge part of my life and my daughter’s life for 16 years have to be put to sleep but we can’t watch him suffer anymore. We are planning a full on Domino day including pancakes (his favourite breakfast) a visit to a local body of water and family time around the fire complete with shelled peanuts which he loves to snack on. The vet is visiting the house and will see that he is peacefully put down while surrounded by his family. It’s a very good thing I am writing about this before the event as I know I will be grieving for days after he is gone.

How many of us have hidden parts of our furniture which are furry from our cats sharpening their claws and raise your hand if you have plucked a kitten or two off of your draperies or clothes hanging in your closet. You can have an entire house full of hardwood or tile and the pets will go straight for the carpeted service to gag up whatever and they give you that pathetic look if you try to move them outside.

The manufacturers of the world know

how attached we are to our pets and use them relentlessly in advertising to pull at our heartstrings. The design world is just as relentless promising us scratch resistant hardwood (showing a beautiful golden lab resting on your floors) and stain resistant carpet (cue the beautiful golden lab).

We are lulled into a sense of security imagining a pristine house where the children play quietly and the lab lies sunning himself on the porch. What is reality is usually far from our fantasies and we are running here and there to clean this mess and trap that floating dust bunny or clean the nose prints off of the window. Still we wouldn’t trade those snuggle times for anything and we go out of our way to purchase pet-friendly items for our life. I have recently purchased a vehicle with leather interior and from now on I will have noth-

ing else while I am a pet owner. It is so easy to keep clean and there is no dog hair woven into the fabric of my vehicle seats.

It is a given that if you have pets you will have an imperfect house. It is better to allow your mind this eventuality rather than fight against it. If you know your pets history with having accidents in the house, try to put an LVT or vinyl instead of hardwood or laminate in the areas where they live or get them used to being secluded in one spot during your time away.

So a fond farewell will be bid to an old family friend, despite his messes and 16 years of breaking in my home he will be missed so terribly much. Pets make our house a home more than any money we can ever spend on decor or design.

TRAVEL Experiencing the many mysteries of Thailand

BY JENNA SWAN Lacombe Express It was nighttime when our plane landed. I remember the airport was unlike any I had ever seen before, with birds bustling atop the rafters inside of the strange terminal.

Foreign smells filled my nose and I yearned to stretch after the long flight, so my sister and I walked with haste past an endless hoard of dread-locked Europeans towards where our 45 lb. backpacks were in baggage claim.

After 28 grueling hours on a plane from Calgary to Vancouver, Vancouver to Hong Kong, then Hong Kong to Bangkok, alas I stepped into the bustling streets of Thailand.

With nothing but an address on a piece of paper of where the hostel was we were to stay in, we hailed a cab outside of the airport and we were off on our 25-day adventure through this seemingly mysterious land.

We traveled in the darkness through what seemed to be slum after slum, both our hearts racing as we watched Bangkok zoom past us.

The only thing familiar about this cab ride was the sound of a familiar pop song serenading us from the radio, which amused me to find we had traveled 28 hours just to hear the same trashy music on the radio.

We were to spend six days in the heart of the Thai capital sleeping side by side in an 8 ft. by 8 ft. hostel room located a few blocks off the City’s famed Khoasan Road.

The equivalent to the Las Vegas Strip or Sunset Boulevard in Los Angeles, Khoasan Road is deemed the ‘Back-backers’ Ghetto’. It is a much shorter strip located in central Bangkok - filled with bars full of young, tanned tourists and hotels with roof top swimming pools.

We opted to leaving the maps behind and spent hours exploring the city until we found something of interest. Whether it was

the Bangkok Zoo full of animals in poorly kept habitats, or the Grand Palace, a set of complex buildings used by the monarchs of the country, or the Wat Phra Kaew, considered to be the most sacred Buddhist temple in Thailand there was never a shortage of things to see in Bangkok.

After six days I was begging my sister to leave Bangkok. With no skin left on my knees after having falling out of a ‘tuk-tuk’, a threewheeled doorless cab, we made our way by plane to Koh Samui, a small island off the eastern coast.

From here we boarded a boat packed full of partygoers from every corner of the earth, to the famed Koh Phangan for the even more famous Full Moon Party.

For anyone ages 18 to 35, the Full Moon Party is a must-see event. Every full moon between 5,000 to 50,000 people, mostly tourists, gather on the beach for an all night party filled with flaming jump ropes, fire breathers, two kilometers of beachside bars, and endless ‘buckets’ – tiny pails of alcohol with handles to carry them around as you drink.

The image of the full moon as it hung beside the flipped constellations of the southern hemisphere will be forever imprinted upon my mind. The moon was the closest it had been to Earth in over 100 years and I remember feeling as though I could’ve reached out and touched it. We danced until the sun came up over the hills surrounding the bay and spread light onto the 30,000 people around us.

We spent our remaining days here exploring the island, which doesn’t allow cars or trucks on its roads, using rented scooters roaming up and down the hills of the many villages.

Up next we were off to Krabi, which involved a sea sickness inducing boat to the mainland and a five-hour non air conditioned bus full of smelly back packers, not unlike ourselves at this point in the trip, until we arrived at our destination.

PICTURE PERFECT – A boat can be taken from the main island of the Phi Phi Islands, Koh Phi Phi Don to the smaller island where the movie The Beach was filmed on Koh Phi Phi Lee. Here my sun-loving sister was in her glory as we spent a few days on Phra Nang Beach, perhaps one of the most beautiful white sand and crystal clear blue water beaches on our trip.

Exhausted from the Full Moon Party, we took this time to relish the local cuisine. It was here I developed my seemingly life long love affair with Pad Thai, a delicious stir-fried rice noodle dish.

From here we ventured to the Phi Phi Islands where the critically-acclaimed film, The Beach starring Leonardo DiCaprio was shot. The movie, filmed in the year 2000, has been said to have incited a generation of southeast Asian backpackers to visit the country.

Here we took boat tours around the six islands which make up the Phi Phi Islands, including Phi Phi Don where we were staying and Phi Phi Ley where the movie was

filmed and even saw ‘the beach’ referred to in the movie.

We spent the days snorkeling and kayaking and the nights drinking Chang beer on the beach and watching the stunning sunsets over Iohdalum Bay with our new friends from across the world.

We finished off our trip in Phuket, my least favourite destination. To me it seemed like a grungy urban sprawl filled with pushy merchants and rich elderly European men in search of young Thai wives and mistresses.

Unbeknownst to us at the time, the city is known for its immense amounts of available prostitutes and the world famous ‘lady boys’ – men who are dressed as women but often are too convincing for the untrained eye to know they are in drag.

Upon realizing where we were, we hightailed it back to Bangkok

and spent the remainder of our trip shopping in the many different shopping districts.

Sick of hostel beds and shanty sleeping accommodations we spent the last of our money and sprung for an actual hotel with a legitimate shower, a door that locked, and best thing of all – air conditioning.

Hands scraped from the scooters, knees scraped from the TukTuk, glass in my foot from a broken bottle at the Full Moon Party, a fresh tattoo obtained in Krabi, and a third degree sun burn from Koh Phi Phi – I was a mess, but I still would’ve stayed for another month if I could have.

After another 28-hour flight, broken up by an unpleasant 20hour layover in Japan, we arrived home with a camera full of pictures and minds full of unforgettable memories.
