Commuter vehicle access to and from Zero Avenue between the 264 Street “diversion” and Highway 13 will be closed as of Monday, July 28, when the first phase of the $17.7 million redevelopment of the Aldergrove border crossing begins.

Once the road work is done, south-bound traffic headed for the U.S. will be temporarily moved into the lanes on the west side of the duty-free store. Barricades and a gate will be placed at the east end of Zero Avenue to allow access for construction crews as well as for farmers requiring access across Highway 13 during the construction project, which is expected to be complete in February of 2016.

Once completed, there will be

four south-bound lanes on the west side of the new Canada customs building, with the two western-most lanes dedicated for commercial trucks and Nexus vehicles.

North-bound traffic from the U.S. will also be redirected to temporary customs booths at the west side of the existing customs building. This will enable work on several acres of land on the east side acquired for expansion of customs services for commercial trucks, inspection of recreational vehicles as well as five passenger vehicle inspection lanes, with room to expand to eight lanes in future.

Averill said that all of the roadwork up to about the 200-block of Highway 13 is the responsibility of the CBSA, and improvements on, and widening of, Highway 13 north of this would be up to the provincial highways ministry.

Consultation sheds light on provincial farmland changes

VICTORIA – Since commercial production of wine or cider is allowed on farmland, why not a brewery, distillery or meadery?

Should energy co-generation be allowed on farms, using manure or other biodegradable waste to produce methane gas and carbon dioxide?

These are some of the questions included in the B.C. government’s consultation on changes to Agricultural Land Reserve regulations, released this week.

Others deal with controversial proposals to allow specified non-farm uses, secondary residences and subdivisions without permission from the Agricultural Land Commission.

Averill said he has been consulting farmers who have concerns about access across Highway 13 during the construction work and has made commitments to accommodate them.

“We created the problem for them so we have to. We will put a gate there for farm equipment to come through,” Averill told The Star.

The legislation divided the ALR into two zones, to permit more flexibility in the Interior, Kootenay and North regions (Zone 2) where both agriculture revenue and development pressure are lower.

One question asks whether farmland in all of Zone 2 should be able to be subdivided down to a minimum of a quarter section (65 hectares) without application to the ALC, as is now allowed in the Peace River and Northern Rockies Regional Districts in northeast B.C. Another proposal is to allow subdivision without ALC approval where farmland is divided by a major waterway or highway, subject to a minimum size.

The province is also considering relaxing lease rules, which currently permit leasing of an entire farm property without ALC approval. The consultation asks if a portion

of property should be allowed for lease to permit “intergenerational transfer,” where farmers retire on a portion of their land so their children can continue to farm the rest.

Another proposal for partial lease without ALC approval would allow unfarmed land to be brought into production. The partial leases would not require a formal subdivision.

Agriculture Minister Norm Letnick has emphasized that changes to the ALR are designed to support farming, not erode the protected agricultural land base.

Public input is being accepted until Aug. 22.

Andrew Leduc’s family is angered that a hit-and-run driver won’t be charged.

Family angered over no charges in fatal hit-and-run

A family is angered that no charges will be laid against a contractor for the RCMP who left the scene after killing Andrew Leduc last year.

A civilian consultant working with Mounties on a traffic accident investigation was involved in a fatal hit-and-run accident on Aug. 7, 2013 in the 19500-block of Langley Bypass.

The driver of the semibobtail was traveling eastbound in the curb lane at 3 a.m. when he struck and killed Leduc, 37, of Langley.

The driver did not stop to render assistance, but kept driving.

Leduc died at the scene.

The consultant driving the semi-truck involved in the fatal hit-and-run had been working that day on a re-creation of an accident involving a semitruck that killed Surrey RCMP Const. Adrian Oliver in November 2012 at the intersection of 64 Avenue and 148 Street.

On Thursday, RCMP said there will be no criminal charges against the driver.

“I was pretty shocked; I was pretty angry,” he told CBC. “I can’t see how you can hit a guy like that, leave him lying in the street to die and continue on and no charges whatsoever, not even a traffic ticket.”

Surrey RCMP Major Crimes Section concluded its investigation after eight months, but Mounties called in the Office of the Police Complaints Commissioner (OPCC) to ensure the integrity of the investigation.

This month, the OPCC ruled the RCMP finding was correct – that there was no criminality to the incident.

At the time of the accident, the RCMP called the Independent Investigations Office (IIO), but as the driver was not a police officer, the incident did not fall under the purview of the independent investigators.

A final report from the OPCC is expected in the coming weeks.

In the meantime, Surrey RCMP will be meeting with the victim’s family in Penticton to discuss the reasons for the findings. ~files from CBC News

Cannon conflict: No peace seen in war on birds

The starlings come in cloud-like swirls that can descend on a blueberry field and devour a farmer’s profits in a matter of hours.

But this is a war, not a massacre, and blueberry farmers have a powerful, and loud, weapon at their disposal. Throughout the summer, blasts from propane cannons ring out across the berry fields, urging the birds back into the skies. In the midst of this conflict, many distressed neighbours say they have seen their own desire for peace and quiet shrugged aside as collateral damage.

Propane cannons are used to scare away birds that feast on the blueberries. They begin to blast as early as June when blueberries – which cover 11,300 hectares in B.C. and, according to 2012 stats, had more that $1 billion in sales in the previous five years – reach maturity. But the sound – one model of cannon ranges from 100 to 125 decibels – also keeps some neighbours from enjoying their own land.

The cannons can operate from 6:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. or from dawn to dusk, whichever is shorter, with a break from noon until 3 p.m. Singleshot cannons can fire once every five minutes, while multi-shot devices can activate 11 times, for a maximum of 33 shots in any hour.

Despite perennial conflict between neighbours and farmers, cannon use is considered a normal farm practice and is protected by the province’s Right to Farm Act. In 1989, the province implemented legislation to protect farmer’s rights under the Agricultural Protection Act. It was replaced by the Farm Practices Protection (Right to Farm) Act in 1996.

The province allows municipalities to regulate the use of cannons, but stops short of allowing for the total bans demanded by some opponents.

The economic value of blueberry farming to Abbotsford, the Fraser Valley and British Columbia is considerable – 98 per cent of Canada’s fresh high bush blueberries are grown in B.C. About 105 million pounds of blueberries were grown in the province in 2012. An estimated 40 per

cent of that comes from Abbotsford farms.

The BC Blueberry Council reports that the roughly 800 farmers around the province had a crop which came in at 120 million pounds in 2013, with expectations that this year’s crop could top last year’s record season.

However, those who are bothered by the cannon blasts claim the costs to their peace, quiet and health are being ignored.

In Abbotsford, there have been numerous attempts by city council to implement bylaws that would restrict cannon use and fine those who improperly use cannons – but all have been halted either by council votes or provincial veto.

To further regulate cannons, the city must create a “farm bylaw” that requires approval from the ministry of agriculture. But a proposed bylaw to limit the use of propane cannons in Abbotsford was denied provincial approval last month.

The city aimed to lessen the hours of use and reduce the number of shots allowed per hour. It also sought to increase the distance between the devices and neighbouring homes, kennels and livestock, and levy fees for cannon use and fines for improper use.

The province said the regulations in the bylaw would effectively ban cannon use in Abbotsford and suggested lessening the restrictions. It would still allow the city to impose fines for not following the regulations.

After the province’s decision, staff suggested a bylaw with fewer restrictions; however, a tie vote killed the bylaw. The councillors differed on whether the lesser restrictions were too harsh, not harsh enough, or better than nothing.

Langley passed a bylaw in 2013 that restricts how often the cannons can be fired, and includes escalating fines for violating the rules, as well as a $125 annual licence.

Critics of Langley’s bylaw call it a “do-nothing” law that doesn’t effectively address the noise issue.

Meanwhile, some farmers claim the bylaw unfairly targets them with fees that others in the agriculture industry don’t have to pay.

Provincial guidelines call for farmers to take measures to minimize noise impact on neighbours, and farmers must complete a bird predation management plan before the first use of devices in each growing season. The plan requires producers to monitor bird populations and activity, and undertake strategies to minimize both device use and birds becoming accustomed to the devices. There is a maximum of one device per two hectares of cropland, and cannons should be pointed away from neighbours and roads and set back 200 metres.

The BC Blueberry Council employs a grower liaison to receive calls 24 hours a day in the growing season to address neighbours’ concerns when farmers are not complying with the guidelines.

The BC Farm Industry Review Board (BCFIRB) says conflicts are often driven by increased urban development near farmland, which exacerbates “urban-agricultural conflicts.” However, many complainants argue they are also farmers and the issue is a rural-rural controversy, in which farmers who have lived in the area for decades have blueberry farms suddenly move in next door.

With little means to control the use of cannons, the focus of Abbotsford council has shifted from the symptom to the larger issue: the millions of birds that feast on berries. Starlings are an invasive species, brought to North America in the late 1800s. They’ve proliferated across the continent, causing issues for native birds as well as the agricultural industry.

Abbotsford council has already pledged $30,000 to aid in a local starling management program and will continue discussions with other stakeholders in the region.

There are additional methods in use to keep starlings away, including nets to keep birds off, hawks and falcons to frighten starlings away, traps, lasers, streamers and more. While some farmers refrain from using cannons, others say noise devices are the most important tool in their arsenal in the fight against starlings.

Meanwhile, their neighbours hope for a shift away from any need for the cannons at all.

Cannon conflict : Blasts fray neighbours’ nerves

Part 2 of a series: Living next to a propane cannon can feel like being in a war zone, according to some neighbours.

Ken Howard and his wife Diane Danvers had lived on Downes Road for some 25 years when the first blueberry farm moved in across the road.

“It used to be a nice, quiet hay field,” Howard says.

But in 2008 the first blasts of a propane cannon rang out across the couple’s five-acre hobby farm.

“When it first started, I thought there must be something wrong,” Danvers says.

The couple’s dog sought refuge in the house and Danvers’ milk cow became jumpy. That summer, a company hired by the couple measured the cannon sound at 92.8 decibels. That year there were two cannons, each firing three shots every five minutes.

By 2011, five cannons were firing across the street. The cannons are allowed to fire from 6:30 a.m. to 8 p.m., with a pause between noon and 3 p.m.

Last year, the grower was asked by the Farm Industry Review Board to modify his practices and try other measures to keep birds away.

It wasn’t enough for neighbour Barbara Fischer, who lodged the complaint. She has since moved to Osoyoos, saying the cannons were the “final straw” that convinced her to leave. Her property was bought by a farmer who has planted much of the land with blueberries.

Danvers and Howard say the cannons have changed the way they spend their time at home, which has been in Danvers’ family since the 1940s.

“We go away during the day,” Danvers says. “It’s quite precious when they stop.” rrrr

Jarnail Heer wishes he didn’t have to use propane cannons.

But the Huntingdon Road farmer says that without the devices, birds would devour a large proportion of the blueberries that grow on his 36-acre farm.

The birds “come like a cloud,” he says. “If you left that field alone, without the cannons, after three days you wouldn’t see any blueberries on the branches.”

Heer says he uses all the devices at his disposal, and tries to limit his use of the cannon. But squawking noisemakers, bright ribbons, plastic hawks and men on ATVs can only do so much. “We try to start [the cannons] late in the season so the birds don’t get used to them,” Heer says. “They’re very smart.”

As it is, Heer says the birds consume about 10 per cent of his crop.

At his Fore Road farm, Devinder Brar employs workers who keep an eye on the birds and try to flush them from his 40 acres of berries.

He also strings ribbons high above his crop to dissuade landing birds.

But he says a grounded bird is not easily moved from its blueberry feast.

“It’s very hard to get rid of them.

Abbotsford farmers like Brar and Heer grow about 40 per cent of British Columbia’s blueberry crop.

Ban the cannons, and the farmers say that percentage will drop.

The homes of both Brar and Heer are adjacent to their fields, and both question those pushing for stricter guidelines around the use of propane cannons.

“The people who are complaining about the noise, I don’t know what their motive is,” Brar says. “It’s just a false intention.”

He claims the noise isn’t excessive and is often short-lived.

“I don’t like to hear the noise in my neighbourhood, but it’s only for two and a half months.”

Some of the conflict, Brar says, likely stems from malfunctioning cannons on fields whose owners do not live nearby.

Heer characterized complainants as those who don’t work and don’t understand the importance of the blueberry industry to the economy. Brar and Heer both say they have had minimal conflict with neighbours.

Heer says he has two cannons, both of which start firing at 7:30

a.m. and issue shots every 15 minutes in three different directions.

He says he has spoken to his neighbours and has offered to quell the cannons if they are hosting guests.

“My people around me don’t have a problem,” says Heer, who has been farming in the area for two decades. “We educated them that we can’t live without this thing.”

The BC Blueberry Council also works to minimize disputes, and the organization’s executive director, Debbie Etsell, says most of those efforts are successful.

Etsell stressed that cannons are “one tool in the toolbox” and says growers are encouraged to use a range of options to combat birds.

“Most of our growers aren’t out there to irritate their neighbours.

We do have a few cases where they’re not compliant in the guidelines and we do whatever we can to mitigate that.”

But she also stressed the need for local agriculture: “I think people need to be concerned about where their food comes from, because there are a lot of other places in the world that can produce it for much more economically, but is it as safe and is it of the quality of what we have in our own backyard?”

Cannon blasts are too much Editor: As we are working on our farm on this gorgeous Sunday afternoon, we can’t help but feel frustrated by the noise of the propane cannons that we can hear from multiple different directions coming from the farms that surround us on all sides.

As the cannons rotate, the shots that directly face us make us jump.

They go off at least every minute when the noise is combined from all of the different farms.

We shouldn’t have to give up our task of working outside and leave our farm to avoid the noise. These ABSDs should not be considered a right to farm because they intrude other farming practices and people’s lives. Why should people using propane cannons have the right to intrude our lives?

In our opinion, the use of these devices should be a criminal act.

There are studies about the negative effects of noise on human health and ABSDs are no exception. In addition, it’s obvious that they don’t work, simply from observation and studies that have been published in the past. There are many other methods of warding off birds that are more effective.

It’s time to revise the use of these ABSDs. Allowing them in the first place was a big mistake and they should be outright banned.

VICTORIA – A recent column on the B.C. government’s decision to raise speed limits on portions of rural highways excited numerous comments from readers.

Some questioned my suggestion that today’s new drivers are worse because they spend their formative years staring at screens in the back seat instead of looking out the window and grasping the grim physics of the real world.

There is no doubt that B.C.’s graduated licensing system for new drivers is more difficult than what my generation faced. Those vehicle stickers with the “L” (for learner, or as teens prefer “loser”) and “N” (for novice, or in teen-speak “nerd”) have been around since 1998. The two steps make getting a full driver’s licence a longer, more difficult and expensive process.

Statistics provided by ICBC show what new drivers are up against.

First there is the written “knowledge test” to obtain a learner’s permit. From 2004 to 2008, more than half of applicants failed in their first attempt. Things improved in subsequent years, with a 46-per-cent failure rate in 2009 declining to 42 per cent by 2013.

The first road test is required to go from “L” to “N” and it seems sufficiently harsh.

The failure rate has been consistently around 47 per cent in the past six years. More

practice and another $35 are required to try again.

Students fare better on the second road test, where the failure rate has consistently been 21-22 per cent for the past decade.

ICBC reports that in the first three years of the graduated licence program, the new driver crash rate dropped by 16 per cent. In 2003 the required learner and novice period were extended, and restrictions on the novice stage were increased. New driver crashes fell by another 28 per cent.

Those restrictions include the number of passengers and a “zero tolerance” for alcohol.

Impaired crash and injury statistics aren’t available for drivers in the graduated licence program, only fatalities. They grew as more new drivers were enrolled in the new system, to a high of 24 in 2007, but that declined to 14 by 2012.

There will always be young people who drive impaired, speed or make other fatal errors. But it’s difficult to argue that today’s system in B.C. is lenient.

A couple of readers were concerned about the effect of higher rural speed limits on older drivers. One suggested that higher limits on rural highways are a poor mix with vacationing seniors hauling around oversized motorhomes, trailers and boats.

Another cited the coming wave of retired baby boomers and added a likely increase in marijuana-impaired drivers, all emboldened by the invitation to drive faster.

B.C.’s medical health officers issued a letter denouncing the decision by Transportation Minister Todd Stone to raise speed limits.

Provincial Health Officer Dr. Perry Kendall said the research is clear that higher speeds increase the risk and severity of incidents.

Then there is the government’s own position, articulated in a road safety strategy released last year by Attorney General Suzanne Anton.

“Research is conclusive that at higher speeds, more people are killed and injured in the traffic system,” it states.

“At lower speeds, fewer are killed and injured as a direct result of the safety buffer that lowered speeds create.”

The strategy notes that new technologies such as adaptive cruise control are becoming available.

B.C. is also testing electronic highway speed limit signs that change with weather and traffic conditions.

Next comes self-driving vehicle systems, so drivers will be able to check their phones again.

Editor: A recent letter to the editor by the provincial fire fighters union president makes several claims about the provincial pre-hospital health care system that require clarification so readers can have a balanced perspective.

To ensure that both ambulance and first responder (fire department) resources are dispatched appropriately, and the public isn’t at risk from emergency vehicles driving at high speeds unnecessarily, BC Emergency Health Services (BCEHS) undertook its fifth review of its Resource Allocation Plan (RAP) in 2013. The RAP outlines which resource(s) to assign to each medical call received and how they should respond - lights and siren or routine.

Our evidence-based review found that there is no clinical benefit for patients to have first responders dispatched for several of the call types that they currently attend. A formal consensus among EMS physicians is that only patients in cardiac or respiratory arrest, or those having total airway obstruction, benefit from a rapid ambulance response. An ambulance is still sent to every call in B.C., however, they are responding without lights and siren more often.

Ambulance dispatchers assess the patient’s condition over the phone and prioritize every call for service – people with life-threatening conditions get the fastest response with the highest trained paramedics available. When appropriate, dispatchers notify first responders that there is a patient that would benefit from having fire fighters provide first aid as soon as possible. This notification occurs in seconds, not minutes as stated. First responders remain able to upgrade the call if they have concerns about the ambulance response.

With these changes, ambulances are getting to critically ill or injured patients faster and those with non-life threatening conditions have been waiting only a few minutes more on average. An EMS expert reviewed the process used to update the RAP and found that the methodology was consistent with contemporary best practices nationally and internationally, used robust clinical evidence, and is superior to the processes used in many major EMS systems.

BCEHS continues to monitor the RAP changes – which have only been implemented for ambulances so far, not first responders – on a system-wide basis and review individual calls when the response was questioned. To date there have been no negative clinical patient outcomes attributed to the RAP changes.

BCEHS greatly values the role of first responders and will continue to work on strengthening this partnership using medical evidence and facts to enhance care and service for patients.

Delay decried Editor: In the July 20 Province newspaper, an article describes a nine-monthold baby having to wait four and a half hours to see a doctor at Langley Memorial Hospital the previous week. This is very upsetting and concerning.

We have a major problem here in Langley that needs to get fixed.

The inadequate primary health care services to support the growing population in this community just cannot continue as is. We either need to stop increasing population in our community, or increase health and education services.

In my opinion, this is an emergency situation.

It affects quality of life in our community.

The time- COUN C I L L O R KI M worn excuse RICHTER of getting the population and then we get the services does not cut it anymore. We have the population but we can’t get the services from the provincial government and their agencies, including health authorities, school boards and TransLink.

Why not?

Residential growth and the construction industry are economic engines that the provincial government wants our community to foster and support to help keep the provincial economy moving.

But you just can’t bring thousands of new people to communities each year and dump them there without adequate basic human care and services — especially in health care and education.

Premier Christy Clark and Langley ministers Rich Coleman, Mary Polak and Peter Fassbender — how does what is happening in Langley support your “Families First” agenda?

You are letting our families down in key community infrastructure areas — health care, education and transit.

When are you going to fix this for us?

This is just not acceptable or tolerable any more.

A nine-month-old child should never have to wait four and a half hours to see a doctor, especially with a severed finger in a baggie. This is simply inexcusable.

Speaking up for hit and run victim JUSTICE SYSTEM HAS LET DOWN ANDREW LEDUC’S FAMILY Editor: Where’s the justice?

I am writing on behalf of a friend who can no longer speak for himself.

Andrew Leduc was run down and killed on the Langley Bypass Aug. 7, 2013 by a hit-and-run driver.

I recently found out this driver is not, and never will be, charged under the law for any infractions.

Where is the justice for this young man, Andrew? He was the father of three

with himself and sleeps well at night.

Three children, one who was only months old, will grow up never knowing their father. No justice was done in his name.

It is such a shame that a life is worth so little to those who control our legal system. All I can say is, Andrew, rest in peace my friend.

Decorative trees, curbs are costly Editor: I’m wondering, with the elections around the corner, if Langley Township council members have been out walking, as I have been, and I am wondering about the waste of tax dollars.

I cannot figure out why, on the coast, where trees grow at such a rapid rate, the Township persists in planting trees beside the walkways and curbs, in about a foot and a half of soil, and doesn’t expect to run into trouble.

Council members and candidates should just go for a walk from 88 Avenue to 93 Avenue on 208 Street, and see what those trees have done to the sidewalk.

It is like walking on a roller-coaster. The sidewalk is up and down from the tree roots. It is a waste of taxpayers’ dollars.

Now the trees have to be cut down and new sidewalks put in.

And why do they have to plant shrubs and trees in the middle of the road, to be

pruned and weeded and watered? It is another waste of dollars.

If anyone drove up on 96 Avenue, around the Johnston Heights area in Surrey, they would see cement curbs in the middle of the road with brick colored cement in the middle of the road. It looks so nice and neat and needs no maintenance.

What is the matter with putting in wider sidewalks to the curb, and planting trees on the lots on the inside?

Just get the developer to plant trees when they are building. That will save the taxpayers money, and the trees will look just as nice on the inside as they do on the outside. The roots will have room to grow without lifting up the sidewalks.

And why did they put cement dividers in the middle of the road on 203 Street, which is an industrial area?

Now they are chopping them up be-

cause the semis can’t turn there. Why not leave the middle as a turning lane?

Is it all about looks — because it is not working. They turned 98 Avenue into a one-way street at 203 Street, planted four-foot high pampas grass so no one can see anything, and have cars going down an alley that is a single car wide, in order to get back onto 98 Avenue.

Council was petitioned and the area was inspected. We were told that the road would be fixed in 2013.

It is now halfway through 2014 and nothing has been done.

OK, councillors, it’s time to address these issues and quit beating around the bush. You keep this up and it will cost the municipality a lot of money to keep fixing mistakes.

We don’t need oil or transportation Editor: Let’s stop all the oil companies from digging up the tar sands for oil, and drilling wells and pumping it out of the ground.

We sure don’t need all the stuff that is made from that dirty oil.

Who needs cars, planes and ships that run on that dirty oil? We don’t need all the things that ships and trucks and trains bring us to use and eat.

We can walk to wherever we need to go.

We need the exercise anyway.

We do not need all those high-paying jobs that oil and coal and other polluting minerals produce.

We will not need mechanics or operators, electricians or construction jobs or any other jobs that depend on dirty oil.

We should eat food that is grown within walking distance anyway.

When the townspeople whine and complain, we will turn a deaf ear to them.

Bring the family to see the stunning show cars, shop in the best marketplace, meet the great local businesses and take in the shows by Elvis, The Seattle Cossacks Motorcycle Stunt team and more. There will be music, lots of food including In-N-out Burger, and plenty of excitement all day in beautiful downtown Langley.

I wonder if those people who are so against ships travelling along our coast, actually work on the coast? Do they make their living on the coast or do they just sit around coffee shops and have nothing better to do but talk and socialize?

Years ago, we used to say “work gets in the way of some people’s social life. That’s why they won’t work.”

There is always some risk in progress for a nation. What would the unemployment rate be in Canada if it were not for the mining and oil industries? We would be in a depression in Canada.

Do you want to go back to the Dirty 30s?

Most people have never lived through times like those.

Brigade Days: History, live music and fun for all ages Aldergrove Star

Don’t miss the annual Brigade Days festival at Fort Langley National Historic Site, August 1-4.

Period re-enactors from all over British Columbia and Washington will convene for three days of 1800s living, live music and the exciting Arrival of the Fur Brigades on the Fraser River.

Throughout the long weekend, dozens of men, women and children dressed in 19th century clothing will be “roughing it” in their canvas tents, cooking over the fire, and sharing their old-fashioned skills with visitors. Visit with the re-enactors and watch demonstrations of sewing, trapping, cooking and historic weapons.

A highlight on Saturday August 2 will be some good old-fashioned demonstrations such as a day-long pig roast to view, trapping techniques and historic weapons.

On Sunday August 3, a day of interesting demonstrations in the encampment culminates with the traditional Fur Trade Cook-off at 3:00 pm. Arrive early to watch the re-enactors of all ages cook up their 1800s recipes, and see which dish the judges choose as the winner.

On Monday, August 4 at 1 p.m., don’t miss the highlight of the year, “The Arrival of the Fur Brigades.”

Re-enactors will paddle to Fort Langley and unload their cargo of furs, barrels and dignitaries at Fort Langley’s Marina Park. Cheer on the canoe brigades, and hear the exciting bagpipe and black powder salute.

The Arrival of the Fur Brigades portrays an annual event dating from 1848, when Fort Langley became the main depot for the Hudson’s Bay Company on the west coast. Every summer in the 1850s, the fur brigades traveled down the rivers to Fort Langley. The brigades came down in canoes full of furs and other goods that had been traded from Aboriginal people at the Interior forts. They unpacked these goods at Fort Langley to be repacked and shipped back to England. The fur traders then repacked their canoes with European supplies to take back to the Interior posts.

Demonstration garden keeps growing Aldergrove Star

The Township of Langley’s Demonstration Garden is celebrating its second summer at the Derek Doubleday Arboretum, and its reputation for providing fun events and helpful information has firmly taken root.

“The Demonstration Garden is in full swing and our attendance is growing,” said Ava Shannon of the Langley Environmental Partners Society, which runs the facility in partnership with the Township.

“We’ve seen a lot more children registering for our summer camps and look forward to welcoming the public to our beautiful new site during our upcoming events.”

Last spring, the Demonstration Garden officially opened in the 21200-block of Fraser Highway, near the Langley Airport, after spending 20 years in Murrayville. Admission is free, and the garden is open year-round to demonstrate sustainable gardening techniques.

From May to August, staff are on hand during the week to provide information on safe home and garden practices such as composting, the use of native plants, and chemical-free gardening.

And in the summer, things really start to blossom.

A number of events and workshops are offered for adults, and kids get to become Eco

Explorers during day camps that examine the creatures that share our ecosystem and the plants found in our backyards.

“It’s such a great program; they do a great job of making it interesting for the kids,” said Brookswood mom Julie Bergen, whose sons attend the garden’s day camps every year. “They love being outside in nature and learning about what’s in the environment.”

The camps are available for children aged six to 12, and at just five dollars per child per day, they are very affordable, Bergen added. This year, the camps saw an increase in attendance of almost 45 per cent over last year, with 260 kids registered over the summer. There is room for 360 participants and garden administrators hope the word will spread and they will see a

Forage and Fraser Common Farm celebrate Food Day Canada Aldergrove Star

The B.C. Day weekend often means great weather in the Lower Mainland with all sorts of fun, outdoor activities.

On Sunday, August 3, join chef Chris Whittaker at Fraser Common Farm in Aldergrove for a four-course “Whole Hog” feast.

The fun begins at 3 p.m. with a sparkling wine reception, a tour through the farm as guests help to forage for their meal (from a list provided by the chef) and then everyone sits down to a long table dinner with beverages supplied by R & B Brewing and Backyard Vineyards Winery.

This dinner is a fundraising event for Fraser Common Farm to assist in the installation of a permanent outdoor community water station.

The structure will be constructed from an up-cycled shipping container and will feature a living rooftop and grey water system. Their intention is to expand their ability to host educational and community events on the farm, including children’s camps, perma-culture courses and of course, more dinners.

This event costs $75 per person.

Teacher cycles 220km to support Rwandan schools Aldergrove Star

With two months to go until the fifth annual Lake2Lake Ride for Rwanda (www.lake2lake. org), one local woman is preparing to cycle 220km in support of The Wellspring Foundation’s life-changing work in Rwandan schools.

Surrey teacher Lisa Edwardson has been a passionate supporter of Wellspring since the organisation first began in 2004. Since then, Lisa has visited Rwanda twice, and cycled a total of eight times – six times from Seattle to Portland, and twice in the Okanagan – to raise funds for the development of quality education in Rwanda.

When the first Lake2Lake Ride for Rwanda took place in 2010, right here in B.C.’s beautiful Okanagan/Shuswap area, Lisa was excited to participate, and last year, when an injury prevented Lisa from riding, she returned as a volunteer to support and encourage other participants.

The reason for her commitment, Lisa shares, is simple: “I truly believe in what Wellspring is doing. I care about education, and giving children in Rwanda the opportunity to learn. As a teacher myself, I see the

revolutionary impact that Wellspring is having on education in Rwanda, and I’m excited to have a part in this.”

Encouraging others to join her on this year’s ride, Lisa says, “Lake2Lake is an amazing weekend of biking and camaraderie, hosted by a fantastic organization. Every rider is well taken care of throughout the weekend, and it’s a great getaway before fall sets in. The Okanagan is a beautiful area to ride in, and a lovely drive from the Lower Mainland. Come join us for the ride, and help make a difference in the lives of others.”

The Lake2Lake is a two-day fully supported ride from Vernon to Eagle Bay, in B.C.’s Okanagan/ Shuswap, and takes place on September 20–21.

Riders are welcome to participate as individuals or as part of a team of four, and those who fundraise may be eligible for a free jersey or ride registration. In addition, volunteers and riders who fundraise a minimum of $1200 will be entered into a draw for a trip for two to Rwanda.
