There’s a joke I’ve heard that gardening is like a competitive sport in Revelstoke. While I won’t quite get on that train, the amount of work people put into their gardens here is very admirable and impressive. Nine residents opened their gardens to the public last Saturday for the second annual Garden & Art Tour, put on by the North Columbia Environmental Society. As well, the new community garden at Begbie View Elementary, the community garden at the United Church and the heritage garden at the Revelstoke Museum were also part of the tour. 1. Bob and Cheryl Wilford’s beautiful flower and vegetable garden is perched on Track Street, with stunning views across the valley. 2. Giuseppe Iaccino holds court in his garden, which features a fig tree, peach tree and rows and rows of vegetables. The pottery is by Cat Mather. 3. Madison Dyck (left) and Jacki Hutchison pose in their unique straw bale garden. The paintings are by Dyck, who has cerebral palsy. “Creating provides me with a great sense of accomplishment and most importantly, gives me freedom to fully express myself,” writes Dyck in his artist statement. “My arts helps me to define myself devoid of my disability.” 4. Hairstylist Sara Jeffery provided the art in Rory Luxmoore and Sarah Newton’s yard, which is a mix of garden and playground. 5. Sharon and Jim Cook stand amidst their art in their flower garden. 6.
