The Martin Mars is being replaced with smaller planes that are more flexible, deliver water twice as fast.

Jeff Nagel Black Press The provincial government is defending its unpopular decision to halt B.C.’s use of the veteran Martin Mars water bombers in favour of newer aircraft to fight wildfires.

The B.C. Wildfire Management Branch responded as campaigners closed in on a target of 20,000 signatures on a petition urging the premier to reinstate the 1940s-era amphibious plane.

Organizer Chris Alemany plans to deliver the petition Thursday to Christy Clark’s constituency office in West Kelowna, where residents had been under evacuation order from the Smith Creek wildfire.

Critics argue the province is spending more money to get less firefighting service than it had with the famous Martin Mars planes.

B.C. instead has contracted the use of four Air Tractor “Fire Boss” water-scooping amphibious planes from the Conair Group of Abbotsford for $2.5 million per season.

The much smaller aircraft are more flexible because they can operate from more than 1,700 lakes compared to just 113 with the Mars.

The new planes can also drop water, foam or retardant on a fire, with an ability to deliver 3,025 litres on a seven-minute turnaround, compared to 19,000 litres with the Mars on a 19-minute round trip.

The branch said in statement the new Fire Bosses delivered fire suppressant twice as

fast during the recent West Kelowna fire – 586,000 litres in 11.3 hours – as the Martin Mars dropped during the 2003 Kelowna fire.

“Over the past six weeks, the new Fire Boss aircraft have actioned more fires than the Martin Mars did in six years.”

Today there’s only one Martin Mars left in the province, owned by the Coulson Group on Vancouver Island.

According to the province, it offered the firm an “as when needed” contract for the 2014 fire season but got no response.

The government statement noted the Mars engines are prone to breakdowns, while if one Fire Boss breaks down the other three can stay in service.

Separate planes can also be split up to attack multiple different targets at once, which officials say is particularly useful in fighting a series of fires after intense lightning.

The Mars, meanwhile, has a large drop pattern that the branch said can make it unsafe to use close to ground crews, who must stop work during a drop, risking the escape of a fire that could have been contained during the initial attack phase.

The province also uses various other air tankers and helicopters in fighting fires.

More than 100 helicopters are currently in use around the province.

The province brought in an additional 153 firefighters from Manitoba, Ontario and New Brunswick Tuesday, joining 350 other out-of-province personnel.

College of the Rockies’ haul truck simulator visits Williams Lake, the first stop on its maiden voyage. The simulator is available to travel anywhere in Western Canada to provide haul truck operator training.

College of the Rockies’ mobile haul truck simulator has travelled north to Williams Lake, marking its inaugural trip to deliver training.

From July 7 to 30, the simulator is being utilized by students in the Haul Truck Operator program being put on by the College in partnership with the Aboriginal Mentoring and Training Association (AMTA) and Taseko’s Gibraltar mine. The simulator will return to the area from September 5 to 23 for another round of training.

College of the Rockies’ Director, Continuing Education, Contract Training and Regional Campus Operations Leah Bradish says, “We are thrilled to have our mobile simulator out on the road. Our partnerships with AMTA, the Gibraltar mine – and soon Nicola Valley Institute of Technology – allow us the opportunity to have the Haul Truck Operator training made available to students outside of the Kootenay region.

Fires have burned 172,227 hectares since April 1 – more than the average of 141,000 hectares burned over the previous 10 years.

“It has been quite busy,” fire information officer Navi Saini said Tuesday. “The danger ratings we saw

for the last two weeks were the highest we’d seen since about 2010, which was the last busy fire season.”

In 2010, B.C. lost 337,149 hectares and spent $212 million fighting 1,673 fires.

Evacuation orders were issued for several communities that year.

There have been 652 fires so far this year

and 128 of them were considered active as of Tuesday.

The provincial government has so far spent an estimated $80.7 million and more than nine times as much area has already been burned as the 18,259 hectares all of last year.

About 60 per cent of the fires so far have been caused by people

– a high proportion – but Saini said that’s typical early in the season, because lightning-sparked fires tend to pick up later in the summer.

Cooler weather and rain this week is helping ease the wildfire risk in much of the province, but Saini said a high pressure ridge is expected to re-

build by the weekend, bringing a return to warm, dry conditions.

The Arts are alive and growing in Elkford The Elkford Art Studio opened in October 2012 hosting art classes that have included drawing, painting, pottery and sculpturing.

These classes are well received by community members of all ages and skill levels.

Community members are encouraged to explore their “artistic side” and practice different art media. Those who participate in the painting classes are taught composition, design and the art of mixing paints. Pottery participants learn the basics about the preparation of clay, and create hand-built clay pieces, as well as wheelwork pieces such as bowls and cups. Each piece is then finished with a variety of glazing techniques.

Inspired and led by instructor/painter Teri Cleverly, members of the community are working to create the Elkford Arts Council Society to promote the arts.

The purpose of the society is to: • positively impact the social well-being of community members by using art as a vehicle for social growth; • create a vibrant community art space sensitive to the needs of community members; • establish community art events to promote the arts in Elkford; and • support children and youth in our rural community by providing a creative outlet.

With support and grants from the District of Elkford and the Columbia Basin Trust, the group plans to purchase additional equipment and supplies to offer a professional art space featuring 9 banding wheels, kiln, extruder and glazes for the potters and easels, paints and palettes for painters.

Kimberley Pipe Band’s Dave Ekskog retires

By Liela Cooper I first met Dave when I was 13 years old. The pipe band had played at the Blossom Festival Parade in Creston and were playing afterwards in a park. So, I walked up to the tallest guy in the band and asked him if he would play a Highland Fling so I could dance. He agreed and the rest, as they say, is history! Dave has been the Pipe Major of the Kimberley Pipe Band for 37 years. Under his leadership, our band has represented Kimberley at hundreds of parades for civic celebrations, cenotaph services, weddings, funerals, birthdays, highland games and numerous Tattoos. Julyfest parade this summer marked Dave’s last parade. Although Dave is retiring as Pipe

Since Dave made the decision to retire as Pipe Major of our band, I’ve had time to think of the contribution he has made to our band, my dancers and our community.

Believe it or not, Dave Ekskog actually started his piping career as a drummer! He was 13 years old when he started lessons. His original drum teacher was Eric Bisgrove, who played, snare, tenor and bass drum with the KPB for 61 years. After a few drum lessons, Eric suggested he take up piping because the band had a good size drum corps but was in short supply of pipers. So he took up the pipes instead and never looked back. His first teacher was Gordon Stewart, Bob Adams for 6 months, then Pipe Major Hamish Scott took over his instruction.

In the summers of 1967 and 1968, Dave attended piping school in Spokane where he formed life long friendships with pipers like Ian MacCrimmon, David Hogg, Maureen Soichuk, Scot Koretgaard and Dan Deisner. He also attended piping school in Nelson in 1971.

When Dave started to play with the band in 1965, Hamish Scott was the Pipe Major and Eric Bisgrove was Drum Sergeant.

Dave graduated from Selkirk School in 1969 and began working for BC Hydro...he then got an apprenticeship from Cominco and went away to Nanaimo to trade school. While visiting his mom in Vancouver, he met his wife Sharon. They were married in 1972 and the

pipe band was present at their wedding. They made their first home in Castlegar. In 1973 they moved to Elkford where Dave continued to work as a mechanic for Cominco. While in Taril, we played on

Through his instruction and guidance, the band

year with the Trail Pipe Band. In 1976, Dave, Sharon and their children Patrick & Stacy moved to Kimberley, where all but Patrick live today. Dave took over as Pipe Major from Jim Warriner in the fall of 1978.

In 1977, the band celebrated it’s 50th Anniversary and Dave played with the band at the Tattoo held in the summer of that year.

During Dave’s tenure as P/M, the band celebrated 3 more milestones; 60th, 70th and an 80th, all of which came and went with hard work, huge fundraising and great fanfare!

Dave has always believed that new pipers were the future of the band and has taught chanter and pipes to both children and adult learners. From 2004 to 2014, Dave gave all the instruction to the Army Cadets in Creston. He drove to Cres-

played in the Sam Steele Days parade in Cranbrook in 2006 and also competed in Grade 5 at the Canmore Highland Games. Because of his contribution, he was made Honorary Captain of the Cadets.

In 2013 Dave was the recipient of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal for outstanding contribution this community and to Canada. Dave was nominated for this Recognition Award by Struan Robertson and Albert Hoglund.

In the summer of 2010 the band auditioned for and was invited to Halifax to participate in the Royal Nova Scotia International Tattoo. It was an amazing and memorable two weeks for the band, that culminated with a week’s worth of nightly performances at Metro Centre for an audience of over 6,000 per show. One of the highlights for the band was the July 1st parade through the streets of Halifax with brilliant blue skies and tens of thousands of

The band is not corporately sponsored so, for operating costs, the band relies entirely on fundraising and the money it receives while on parade. Pipers supply their own bagpipes but everything else you see on parade is funded by the band itself.... drums, sticks, uniforms, right down to the laces for the shoes. Much of the fund-raising effort involves the participation from wives of band members and Sharon was always involved.

The band has competed in competitions at the Canmore Highland Games and, more recently, the Spring Fling.

An annual fun-filled piping, drumming and entertainment event held within the Interior of BC. This past May, the Kimberley Pipe Band won trophies for Best Dance, Best Skit/ Song, 2nd in Dress and Deportment as well as a large trophy for Best Overall Band in the competition held in Kamloops. A great way for Dave to finish off his career as Pipe Major... don’t you think? Dave’s last parade as P/M was Julyfest in Kimberley this July.

After a short break from band, Dave plans to return as a playing member of the band. Jock MacDonald will take over as Pipe Major with Liela Cooper, Angus Beaton and Jim Feenstra as Pipe Sergeants.

Nearly one third of parents admit to passing bad driving habits Now that summer’s in full swing, many teenagers may be eager to learn how to drive and gain more independence. In 2013, approximately 46,000 B.C. teens (aged 16 to 19) got their learner’s licence.

While the idea of having another licensed driver in the house can be exciting, this rite of passage can also be a stressful time for parents.

Driving is particularly risky for new drivers because they lack experience. Not only are they more prone to crash but on average, 18 per cent of crashes involving young drivers result in an injury or fatality.* In a recent survey conducted by ICBC, 29 per cent of parents surveyed believed their teens had picked up a bad driving habit from them. The most common habits were speeding, not coming to a complete stop, impatience, eating while driving and not shoulder checking. Survey respondents also

revealed that if they could teach their teen over again, they would enroll them in professional driving lessons.

Here are ICBC’s tips to help parents teach their teen to drive and pass their road test: Set a good example: Once your teen has passed the knowledge and vision tests, they’ll get a class 7 learner’s licence and can now get behind the wheel with a qualified supervisor. Review your teen’s copy of ICBC’s Tuning Up for Drivers guide that they received with their licence. This is also a good time to brush up on the rules of the road, work on any bad driving habits and learn about the restrictions of each stage of the Graduated Licensing Program (GLP) so that you can make sure your teen follows them.

Gearing up: The type of car your teen learns to drive on can make a big difference. It’s best to learn on a vehicle that’s a manageable

size, has good visibility, an automatic transmission and as many safety features as possible. Begin your driving lessons on roads with minimal traffic and avoid rush hour congestion to help build your teen’s confidence and ease their nerves.

Call in the experts: To help your teen gain as much driving experience as possible consider signing them up for lessons with a professional driving instructor if you can.

Driving school instructors can be objective without the emotion that’s often involved in parent-teen relationships. If you do choose this route, stay involved and discuss what they’re learning. different weather and road conditions, and in unfamiliar neighbourhoods. That way they’ll be prepared for whatever conditions they might face on the day of their road test.

Another great way to prepare is to take ICBC’s road ready quiz that helps teens avoid common driving mistakes.

Keep them safe: Once your teen has passed their class 7 road test and can now drive without a supervisor, consider creating a family contract that’s in line with the GLP restrictions. It helps set out your expectations of your teen, the responsibilities you want them to show on the road and

the consequences for breaking those rules.

If your teen will be driving your vehicle, check that you have the right insurance coverage. If your vehicle is rated in an experienced rate class (all drivers in a household with at least 10 years’ driving experience), then you’ll need to change the rate class.

The handling is a bit top-heavy in the corners, especially at higher speeds, but after some initial body roll, the Durango is very stable. One notable feature is the automatic fantastic adaptive cruise control, making the ride very enjoyable.

Verdict If you drive in the city, the base 3.6L V6 engine might be a better choice based on fuel consumption but, if you drive a lot on the highway or tow a boat (3,265 kg towing capacity), the

Hemi is the right choice. Power was always there to pass and pull up a hill and the fuel economy can be good if the driver watches their speed. The V8 has the ability to switch off four of the eight cylinders when the truck is under light load and accessing this as often as possible makes a big difference.

Another thing to consider is price: the Durango is not inexpensive, starting at $39,995 for the V6 and running up to $52,495 for the top Citadel V8.

My family loved spending time in the Durango, we all had a lot of space and the trip was effortless. Our next adventure is to Portland, Oregon in the Jeep Grand Cherokee Diesel. I can’t wait to see how that new truck compares.

Carolyn's sensible and caring ways helped her pass very peacefully on Tuesday, July 22, 2014 at 70 years of age, at the East Kootenay Regional Hospital with family and friends at her side. Carolyn was a wonderful lady and anyone who knew her will never forget her as she cared for everyone.

Carolyn was born on October 14, 1943 in Virden, Manitoba and raised on the family farm in Pipestone, Manitoba. She attended school in Manitoba and in April of 1966 moved to Calgary with Anglo Oil for work where she met Allan, her wonderful husband. They were married in Reston, MB in October 1968. In 1976 they moved to Cranbrook to raise their family.

Carolyn was very involved in summer and winter sports.

She very much enjoyed curling, golfing and skiing. She spent many hours with her children while they played in minor hockey and then with the Cranbrook Colts. She also loved live sports and TV sports. She was an avid member of the Cranbrook Golf Club and served on the Board Of Directors. Carolyn was a dedicated wife and mother and an excellent cook. We will all remember her remarkable meals and wonderful generosity.

Carolyn was predeceased by her husband Allan "Shrub" in 1995, her father Frank in 1995 and her mother Annie in 1974. She leaves to mourn her passing her two sons: Craig (Kimberly) and children Tyra and Hunter; and Wayne (Holly Ellis) and daughter Karli; her very close friends Eileen LePage and Doug and Darlene Racher as well as many other close friends.

A Celebration Of Carolyn's Life will be held at a later date at the Cranbrook Golf Club. In lieu of flowers, donations in her honour can be made to the: East Kootenay S.P.C.A., PO Box 2, Cranbrook, British Columbia, V1C 4H6.
