Smiles in the streets PERFORMERS OFFER UP FUN AT CENTREFEST BY MURRAY CRAWFORD ADVOCATE STAFF Years of training, perfecting and experimenting go in to the 30-minute performances that delighted crowds and put smiles on the faces of onlookers at this year’s CentreFest. Six stationary street performers and four roving performers highlighted a fun-filled weekend in downtown Red Deer for the annual CentreFest. CentreFest Artistic Director Bob Palmer has worked the street performer circuit for years as Flying Bob and has established many relationships in the industry, which helps attract performers to the annual Red Deer show. “I check out other festivals, I go online and I know all these people so I have connections all over the world,” said Palmer. “I try to get together with other festivals so we can bring in the same artists to Canada and share the costs to make it a tour for the performers.”

Model aircraft show really gets off the ground PLENTY OF PILOTS, SPECTATORS AT AIRSHOW BY MURRAY CRAWFORD ADVOCATE STAFF In preparation for the anticipated 500-person crowd, pilots were hard at work prepping their aircraft to show off what they could do. But the pilots were safe and secure on the ground, controlling their planes, helicopters, gliders and even a flying witch on a broomstick through a remote control. Event organizer and Central Alberta Radio Fun Flyers group member Jon From called it a normal sized airshow with miniature sized airplanes. The number and the wide range of acts would be comparable to the old Red Deer Airshow, which last took flight more than a decade ago. “It covers basically aviation from the First World War, up through the Second World War, jets, airliners, modern aircraft, scale aircraft, combat, vintage and novelty things like the witch and the skydiver,” said From. “We’ll wrap up the show with the candy bomber.” Photo by MURRAY CRAWFORD/Advocate staff Remote-control plane Dan Hollington, of Carstairs, holds up his B-25 Second World War era bomber at pilots came from all over Western Canada, the Central Alberta Radio Fun Flyers airshow east of Red Deer Sunday afternoon. including Victoria, Sasparticipants in the airshow, has a War, but was hard at work getting katchewan and all over passion for First World War era his Second World War era B-25 Alberta. bomber prepped. MYSTERIOUS DISAPPEARANCE
Dog goes missing from SPCA BELIEVED TO HAVE BEEN STOLEN BY MURRAY CRAWFORD ADVOCATE STAFF Staff at the Red Deer and District SPCA are distraught and concerned after a dog in their care mysteriously vanished and may have even been stolen from the facility Thursday. “We’re pretty upset about it,” said Amy Corpe, Red Deer and District SPCA Animal Care Manager. Though they are closed on Thursday and Friday every week, there were staff in the building when the alleged theft took place. They were performing surgery on animals in their care and when they went to look for Syra to do a checkup on her, as she had recently had a surgery, when they noticed she was not in her kennel. “We assumed maybe someone had taken her out for a walk, even though she has a do not — AMY CORPE, RED walk sign on her kennel DEER AND DISTRICT because of the recent surSPCA ANIMAL CARE gery,” said Corpe. MANAGER “It is extremely difficult for a dog to just get up and let themselves out, it’s pretty much impossible. There’s no way she left without a human helping her.” Syra had been at the Red Deer and District SPCA for one month.
