The City of Merritt is back where it started on its rules for home-based businesses.

At the hearing, council members heard speeches from seven members of the public, most of whom spoke in opposition to the changes bylaw 2177 would enact.

“For me, I don’t care what the bylaws say, if they can’t do that, they’re not going to work,” he said.

Nadine Jolly, owner of A&M Tandem Massage — the homebased business on Parker Drive which sparked council’s interest in directing staff to revise the bylaw after complaints about parking related to the business — also spoke at the hearing.

She mentioned that homebased businesses have been around for years. “It is part of every town, and it is part of every city — that isn’t going anywhere,� Jolly said. “So then it comes down to, how do we make this a winwin for everybody?�

Jolly rejected the idea that

home-based businesses should act as an incubator to grow a business, saying not all businesses were made to grow to the point that they could occupy a downtown storefront.

Once brought forward at the subsequent council meeting, council was tasked with either defeating the bylaw or approving it for third reading and referral to the Ministry of Transportation for approval.

Under the Local Government Act, changes to zoning bylaws that could affect the ministry’s infrastructure must be submitted to the ministry.

Council voted 4-2 to defeat the proposed bylaw.

Planning and development manager Sean O’Flaherty told council that changing the allowed floor area for a homebased business doesn’t necessarily impact parking issues or

traffic, which can be a problem with home-based businesses, he said.

Bylaw 2177 did not change parking restrictions related to home-based businesses.

Coun. Mike Goetz sat on the city’s task force which gave administrators some ideas about possible updates to the bylaw.

Goetz said the reason for looking into changing the home-based business bylaw was to see if an update was needed or not.

Coun. Dave Baker said bylaws need to be looked at to see if they are still relevant.

Baker, along with councillors Harry Kroeker, Neil Menard and Kurt Christopherson voted in opposition of the bylaw.

Coun. Clara Norgaard declared a conflict of interest and was absent from the vote.

last week, a variety of interested onlookers began gathering around — some giving the ivories a tickle or two, others content to just

Add the city of Merritt to the growing list of communities worldwide who are jumping on the street piano bandwagon so to speak.

Last Wednesday, a beautifully-decorated standup piano and bench were unveiled at Spirit Square in our cityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s downtown core. The piano will remain there for all to see and play and listen to. It is prominently situated under the protective roof of the gazebo located at the busy corner of Voght Street and Granite Avenue. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We were doing some reading up on the street piano movement (known as Play Me, Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m Yours) that is catching on around the globe,â&#x20AC;? said Const. Tracy Dunsmore of Merrittâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Community Policing Office. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It is a wonderful way to spontaneously bring people together, almost at any time of the day or night.â&#x20AC;?

Dunsmore had a few conversations with people around town and in pretty short order a piano was offered up to help with the cause. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s from an anonymous donor â&#x20AC;&#x201D; a local person who would prefer to remain nameless,â&#x20AC;? is all Dunsmore would say.

Members of the Smart Step youth group were commissioned to give the venerable old piano a fresh coat of paint and a touch of pizzazz â&#x20AC;&#x201D; as has

Later the same day, at dusk, an unnamed father and daughter sat down at the piano and played a soothing duet together. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s our hope that the street piano catches everyoneâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s interest, and they make a point of stopping by to see whatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s happening,â&#x20AC;? CPO coordinator Kelly Donaldson said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;So far, everyone whoâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s seen it has been quite intrigued.â&#x20AC;?

Asked about the possibility of vandalism or even theft, Donaldson said, â&#x20AC;&#x153;We have faith.â&#x20AC;?

A tarp that was being used to cover the piano overnight has gone missing, but Donaldson doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t believe that anyone took it deliberately. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I think that it might have inadvertently been picked up by one of the other groups using Spirit Square when they were taking things down. Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m hoping that itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll show up in a day or two.â&#x20AC;?

The piano bench has had to get a bit of touch of work done to it already, something Donaldson feels is inevitable when youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re inviting the world to come sit down and play. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t want there to be any hesitation,â&#x20AC;? she said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;People should just come and enjoy themselves.â&#x20AC;?

All about November’s election General election information In B.C., general local elections are held every four years. In Merritt, these include the election of a mayor and six councillors to city council, and the election of three school trustees to the board of School District 58 (Nicola-Similkameen).

Resident electors

Do I need to register to vote?

No. The City of Merritt uses voting day only registration and does not maintain a voters list. If you are a qualified elector, you do not need to register prior to election day. To register on election day, resident electors are required

to produce two pieces of identification (photo identification is not required but at least one must provide a signature) to prove both residency and identity.

Acceptable forms of identification include: • B.C. driver’s licence • ICBC vehicle insurance documents • B.C. identification card • B.C. CareCard or Gold CareCard • Citizenship card • Residential property tax notice • Social insurance card • Credit card • Utility bill.

Other forms or identification may be accepted at the discretion of the Chief Election Official at the voting place.

Coldwater Ranch drawing interest

The Coldwater Ranch has been in high demand since opening its doors in October.

The ranch is operated by the Abilitas Foundation to provide a space of rest and relaxation for people living with disabilities and their families to use for free.

Currently, there are about 79 applications to book time at the respite facility, Abilitas representative Brad Vis said.

“It’s insane. There is so much demand for this place,” Vis said.

He said the foundation hasn’t done any advertising for the facility, but people from all over the province are inquiring about the respite facility.

In June, the facility had 46 confirmed bookings, an Abilitas press release stated.

“It’s booking fast,” Vis said.

He said the facility is being used by locals as well.

About four groups

can be housed at the ranch at one time, Vis said.

In June, Abilitas hosted the Redneck Rally Race at the Coldwater

Ranch to raise funds to pay for operational costs of the facility.

The event raised $10,000.

There were about 17 teams in the event all driving stock Volkswagens without modifications, Vis said. Locals Chris Voigt and Jon Galbraith won the race.

This event was the inaugural Redneck Rally Race, Vis said, adding organizers plan to hold the event again next June.

As the foundation and the ranch are volunteer-run, they depend on charitable events such as the Redneck Rally to raise funds to cover operational costs.

Vis said it costs approximately $50,000 per year to keep opera-

tional.

The next step for the Coldwater Ranch will be to raise funds to pay for phase two of the respite facility, which involves finishing construction on the basement, Vis said.

The $3,000.00 is not a cash payment and cannot be exchanged for cash. Each recipient has until October 31, 2014 to decide if they access this credit or lose it.

If they elect to use it, they must designate an institution such as NVIT or can have a Friendship Centre pool the individual credits. In the case of use by a Friendship Centre, IRS recipients may pool their $3,000.00 with the Friendship Centre of their choice and request that it be used to offer Aboriginal language or culture training. In the case of language, if there are sufÀcient funds, the Friendship Centre can offer an Aboriginal language course. The IRS recipients may also choose to offer cultural programs at the friendship center with their credits (i.e. making star blanket, beading, jingle dresses, regalia, carving, weaving).

VICTORIA – When the audited public accounts confirmed a $353 million surplus for the last fiscal year, B.C. Liberal political staff were quick to remind reporters of the NDP’s main theme from last year’s election campaign.

Pages of election quotes from almost every NDP MLA were waiting to be distributed. It was a “bogus budget,” one of the more polite tags applied to the government’s pre-election fiscal plan.

“It underestimates the costs in a whole bunch of ministries and we’re going to have to review that because all of the decisions that we propose in our platform will have to be implemented,” said then-leader Adrian Dix, describing the NDP’s plans to tax and spend more.

Skeena MLA Robin Austin targeted health care in the budget debate: “Bearing in mind that our population is actually increasing, bearing in mind that our population is aging, I think it’s very unrealistic to think we can actually limit health care expenditures to 2.7 per cent.”

As it turned out, health care spending grew by just over two per cent. It still went up by $360 million from the previous year, but after annual increases of six or seven per cent had become the norm, this is quite an achievement. New agreements remain to be negotiated with doctors and nurses, so we’re unlikely to see the same cost control results for the current year.

Ottawa’s health care transfer payment formula has changed, and increases are to be capped at three per cent a year by 2016, so this is the kind of spending restraint all provinces are expected to produce.

A dream theory that’s got some teeth Emily Wessel Merritt MUSINGS A few nights ago I had a very freaky dream in which I elected to have all of my teeth pulled out of my mouth.

The dream wasn’t about the actual pulling, but rather about the aftermath.

You see, dream-me was missing a tooth and agreed to have all of my other, presumably healthy teeth pulled in exchange for a

fresh new set of vibrant white falsies.

However, the quack dentist who’d convinced me to do such a drastic thing was delayed in having the new set to me.

For some reason I had not told anyone of my decision, and tearfully confessed to my partner after awkwardly living a gummy lie for a week.

Losing teeth is not an uncommon motif in dreamland, and many very scientific-looking websites (not really) tell me that dreams about tooth problems often stem from anxiety — about your appearance, how others perceive you, fear of rejection, fear of getting older, or fear of being embarrassed.

One site tells me because teeth are used to

bite and chew, they symbolize strength and power.

Thus, losing teeth relates to a sense of powerlessness.

Another, less Freudian theory about my toothless dream tells me I dreamt about my teeth because I had thought of them at some point during the day.

This is the interpretation I’m choosing to go with as I had indeed thought about my teeth at least twice that day: once with the realization I am long overdue for a dental checkup, and another time to ponder the apparent non-progressing growth of my wisdom teeth.

The idea that anxiety increases the frequency of dreams is another one that I subscribe to as both thoughts had got me a little worried.

In my university and college days, I would frequently have dreams in the nights leading up to major exams or assignments that would somehow add extra stress to my already overloaded brain.

More than once, I’ve dreamt that I spent two or three hours picking out what to wear to an important final, maybe another hour or so brushing my hair, and finally realized when I was done that I was absurdly late and had missed the entire thing.

The way all of these seemingly disjointed anxieties commingle with real information from our daily lives is what makes dreams seem totally reasonable while we’re in them and completely nonsensical when we’re awake.

It has to do with the complicated ways our brains learn and store information.

The declarative memory stores information you can “declare” you know without having to think about how you know it.

Newly learned information from recent experiences often make up this declarative memory.

In contrast, episodic memory stores the whole experience around when or where you learned something.

One theory about memory’s role in dreaming asserts memory formation happens in two different ways: through the procedural memory system and the “semantic” system.

YOUR OPINION Borrowing to build Connecting with Canadians doesn’t help B.C. balance the books From Page 6 Education was the only other ministry to receive significant extra funding last year, up $299 million despite continuing enrolment decline. Like health, the education budget goes up every year, and these increases, along with strong student performance results, expose the rhetoric of the B.C. Teachers’ Federation about a cash-starved system for what it is.

But the biggest fabrication of last year’s election was the “debt free B.C.” slogan emblazoned on the side of Premier Christy Clark’s campaign bus.

The public accounts confirm that the province’s total debt rose to just over $60 billion, the latest of a series of increases since 2008.

The much-touted balanced budget is on the operating side, while the province continues to pile up debt to pay for the Port Mann megaproject, hospitals, schools and other big infrastructure.

Finance Minister Mike de Jong emphasized the difference between capital and operating expenditures.

“We’re borrowing to build as opposed to paying for the groceries,” he said.

“Debt free B.C.” was not an outright misrepresentation, merely one of the most farfetched promises ever delivered in the history of B.C. politics. The legislature is to convene in October so the B.C. Liberals can pass a taxation framework for the nascent liquefied natural gas industry, which the government hopes will generate the revenues to ultimately pay off the province’s $60-billion mortgage.

Meanwhile there is more capital debt ahead. The cabinet is expected to green-light the Site C dam on the Peace River this fall, a decade-long project estimated to cost $8 billion.

Along with the public accounts, the finance ministry released a list of surplus land sales.

The sale of 50-odd properties, some of them closed schools, netted the provincial treasury about $310 million, which accounts for most of the surplus.

Was this “selling off the family silverware to try and balance the books,” as now-NDP leader John Horgan termed it before the election? It’s certainly not a revenue source to be matched next year.

DAN ALBAS View from the HILL Recently I wrote an MP report on a variety of subjects that also included the concern of interest groups using the courts on issues that they often fail to advance through a democratically elected government.

It is a situation that all levels of government — municipal, regional, provincial and federal — and related agencies deal with and one that taxpayers pay the bill for.

Within a day of the report being published, a follow-up radio interview was arranged out of Ottawa along with a number of related print and social media articles, and within 72 hours, a conversation connecting

people from all parts of Canada was well underway.

The intent of this week’s report is not to recycle the subject from last week but rather to point out the importance of the Internet and how that can enhance our ability to communicate, to do business and to share ideas and discussion all across Canada at a rapid pace, much as was experienced with last week’s MP report.

News, events, commerce, education, civic engagement and more are all readily available to citizens of all ages as the Internet has become integrated into our society.

Unfortunately, a segment of our citizens are regrettably entirely shut out of the same online opportunities that so many take for granted. In some areas of Canada (and this includes parts of Okanagan-Coquihalla) there is no Internet availability or wireless connectivity available.

A lack of cellular service in some regions also creates added challenges for emergency responders and those who may require their assistance.

In response to unserviced areas of Canada, our government has introduced the Connecting Canadians program that has a goal of connecting roughly 280,000 Canadians who currently lack high-speed Internet services.

A target has been set that 98 percent of Canadian homes by 2017 will have access to Internet services with a speed of five megabytes per second.

How will this work? The first step is to identify those areas of Canada that are currently lacking in sufficient service. As part of my summer listening tour, I am hoping to hear from citizens who either are impacted by a lack of service or possibly have friends and families that are currently impacted.

The next step after affected areas are identified will be for Internet service providers to apply for grants to bring service into areas currently lacking.

Some rural communities like Logan Lake have already shown interest in this program.

This process is targeted to occur in the fall of this year so that grants can be awarded in the spring of 2015.

Once the grants are distributed, projects can begin and ideally by this time next year, areas currently lacking Internet services can be online and part of Canada’s Internet infrastructure.

Making sense of nonsense From Page 6 Like in the declarative memory, the procedural system stores the how-tos that you don’t really have to think about — like riding a bike.

It’s the brain’s muscle memory, if you will.

Semantic memory applies general, abstract concepts to memories — instead of riding the bike, it’s the wind in your hair.

It’s that semantic system that one group of researchers from Harvard Medical School found played the biggest role in dream formation.

In a landmark study published

in the October 13, 2000 edition of the journal Science, researchers had their subjects play Tetris for several hours. Some of the subjects had amnesia, and the others had normal memories.

Both groups reported seeing falling, rotating blocks in their dreams.

Since the amnesiacs can’t add things to their declarative or episodic memories, the researchers concluded that dreams are formed by things stored implicitly in memory — semantic and procedural information.

Without the anchors to reality in episodic memory, these semantic concepts seem disjointed and

nonsensical.

The study’s authors say these types of dreams serve a purpose in integrating all the complex and confusing information we receive throughout the day without interference from pesky reality.

Dreaming takes away the conscious effort of uniting feelings with things you can declare you know with things you remember learning — and many times these things don’t fit easily together.

While this research doesn’t interpret the content of my disturbing toothless dream, I think this theory about how our dreams are formed does have some teeth.

Although Canada has one of the best food safety systems in the world, there are still 11 to 13 million cases of food-borne illness across the country each year. That means your ability to stay healthy depends on what food you eat, how

well you store your food at home, and how carefully you prepare it before you eat.

A good, balanced diet is important to help older people stay healthy. But as we age: • Our immune systems weaken, making it harder to fight disease and easier to get sick from germs in our food.

• Our stomachs produce less acid, leaving us with more bacteria in our intestines.

And when older adults get sick, the effects can often be more severe or even fatal.

The risk may be even greater if you

have diabetes or kidney disease, or if you’re undergoing some form of cancer treatment.

When older people get sick, it also takes them longer to recover.

Canada has stringent regulations in place to make sure the food we buy is free of contamination and safe to eat. Any business that produces or sells food — from farmers and food processors to supermarkets, delis, butchers, and restaurants — must meet these standards.

As the consumer, once you buy a food product, you are the next link in the chain that keeps your food safe and healthy.

Unfortunately,

many elderly people have a tendency to leave food in their fridge for far too long.

So what exactly is a food-borne illness?

Food-borne illness is sometimes called “food poisoning.” It’s what happens when a person eats food contaminated with bacteria, viruses and parasites.

Depending on the type of contamination and severity, the symptoms of food-borne illness could include any or all of the following: • Stomach cramps • Nausea and vomiting • Diarrhea • Headache and fever.

Symptoms can begin a few hours or

a few days after eating contaminated food.

Food-borne illness does not usually last long, but in older adults it can sometimes be severe or even deadly.

While most people recover completely from food-borne illness, longer-term health effects like kidney failure and anemia are more common in older people.

Drug abuse can be subtle GWEN RANDALL-YOUNG Psychology FOR LIVING When we think of drug abuse problems, we tend to think of teenagers or drug addicts.

There is a more subtle and less obvious form of drug abuse which occurs throughout all levels of society. This is the abuse of prescription medications.

Medication for pain or anxiety can create dependency. Sometimes, when an individual suffers from extreme pain, it is a tough choice wheth-

er to withhold medication that could help or to risk creating an addiction. This decision is best left to doctors, who sometimes may choose to alleviate the suffering first and deal with the dependency later.

The more disturbing situation is one in which the individual no longer requires such strong pain or anxiety medication, but likes the feeling it gives, and so continues to request prescription refills. If the doctor becomes suspicious, and refuses refills, the individual may simply find another doctor. Doctors have ways of monitoring the use of some narcotic drugs, but not so with many others.

Some medications containing codeine, for example, are available

over the counter. One who becomes addicted may take larger quantities of an over-thecounter medication to get the same amount of codeine, for example, found in a prescription medication. Often, more than one medication is being abused.

The chemical addiction is a problem in itself, but it also leads to secondary behaviours that are destructive to

Dozens attend biomass plant open house

The Diacarbon pellet plant is looking to gain public support as its owners inch closer to operating their Priest Avenue location.

Once up and running, the facility in Merritt will produce wood pellets and biocoal, which is a type of charcoal produced from the same material as wood pellets.

On Friday, the company held an open house where people got to meet Diacarbon employees, ask questions and learn a little more about the facility.

Ministry of Environment meteorologist Ralph Adams attended the open house and told the Herald the number one concern he heard raised from people there was in regards to fugitive dust — airborne particles that could be stirred

up directly or indirectly from human activity.

Diacarbon president Jerry Ericsson said although there will be an impact on Merritt’s air quality from the plant, that impact will be a small one.

“We are going to be the cleanest pellet plant in the province,” he said, noting Diacarbon has spent millions to do so.

He said their lowtemperature dryer is

the first of its kind in Canada and is 16 times cleaner than a typical pellet plant dryer.

“We’re trying to do everything possible that we can to make this the lowest impact processing plant in British Columbia,” Ericsson said.

“We understand this is a sensitive airshed and we’ve addressed that with technology,” he said.

The company stated

the Merritt facility is designed with the community’s air quality in mind. Owners say they plan to mitigate the amount of dust that enters the atmosphere by having pellet pressing and biocoal production done indoors.

Storage of the wood fibre and mixing will be done in an enclosed area to separate dust from the atmosphere as well.

City of Merritt air quality committee member Richie Gage told the Herald he was impressed with the plant itself and its state-of-the art equipment, particularly the belt dryer they will be using to dry wood fibre in pellet and biocoal production.

Diacarbon says the particulate matter the belt dryer emits is less than what a more common drum dryer produces.

Gage said the amount of PM2.5 (particulate matter less than 2.5 microns in diameter which humans can breathe in) this plant will put into the air appears to be minor.

“Put it this way, do we need more? No. However, there are a lot of pluses to this plant,” he said, noting the plant will be processing the wood waste that otherwise would be trucked out of the valley.

Gage said his main concern is the amount of dust that will be produced in the process of loading and trucking the wood waste to and from the mills to the biomass facility. He pointed out the nearby locations of Aspen Planers and Tolko as a positive.

Ericsson said his company is intent on hiring a predominantly local workforce and has had a lot of interest from Merrittonians who want to work at the plant.

“Our intention is to hire as many locals as

possible,” he said.

He also said about 15 of the 17 workers hired for the construction phase are locals.

Once operational, the facility will have about 25 permanent job openings, Ericsson said.

The open house was held in the facility’s sawdust storage area and more than 66 people stopped in, Diacarbon employee Lyndsey Rosevear said.

She said not everyone signed in and she thinks about 85 people in total stopped by for the open house.

Seek God before undertaking activities From Page 10 Is this not a picture of many of our lives?

We work for creature comforts and future security. If we cannot make it by fair means, we are tempted to go into devious ways.

In the frantic race of life, we often miss the very essentials – peace and rest. For the fishermen to leave behind two boats full of fish in order to follow Jesus was obviously unusual.

Something extraordinary must have happened to them. They were ready to gamble for something far beyond their livelihood.

They were ready to embrace a new revelation.

“O Sabbath rest by Galilee! O calm of hills above, where Jesus knelt to share with Thee, the silence of eternity, interpreted by love!”

Silence often connotes to us aloofness or indifference. But in this stanza, God the Son is communicating with his Father in love and adoration.

There is no speech nor language where their voice is not heard.

Yet the communication was full of meaning, love, and worship.

“Drop Thy still dews of quietness till all our strivings cease; take from our souls the strain and stress, and let our ordered lives confess, the beauty of Thy peace.”

What the poet perhaps was trying to convey is that life is not a rat race of activities, seeking fame and popularity.

In the race of life, many get stressed and hit mental breakdowns.

God wants to relieve us from these and give us His peace.

Jesus once said, “Come to me all that labour and are heavy laden and I will give you rest.” The Christian’s witness for God is an ordered life.

“Breathe through hearts of our desire, Thy coolness and Thy balm; let sense be dumb, let flesh retire, speak through the earthquake, wind fire, O still small voice of calm!”

Here is an illustration from the Old Testament story of Elijah (1 Kings 19:916). At Mount Carmel, he showed his zeal for God by calling down fire from heaven and slew 450 prophets of Baal.

Following all the high-pressure activities, he suffered a breakdown and just wanted to die. He ran a marathon and hid himself in a cave fearing for his life.

Then God revealed to him that He was not the tempestuous wind or the shattering earthquake or the devouring fire, but a still small voice.

In that calm voice, God commanded Elijah how to undertake the ministry of anointing kings. He asked him to find a successor to continue God’s ministry.

God wants to speak to His followers as He did to Elijah. But we will not be able to hear His voice if we are too ‘busy’ for God. Whittier wrote, “Let flesh retire….”

Activities without waiting upon God can prove to be carnal. He wants us to learn of Him first, to seek His mind, and to do His will.

We should let the Spirit of God work through us, then surely we will build His king-

dom.

“Cease striving and know that I am God. I

will be exalted among the nations. I will be exalted in the earth”

Nicola Valley Pro Rodeo lookin’ to shake things up

For 56 years, the Nicola Valley Pro Rodeo — held every Labour Day weekend in Merritt — has been a highlysuccessful fixture in these parts.

The storied event has a reputation for attracting some of the top cowboys, cowgirls and rodeo stock on the planet to its firstclass facility in Collettville, and providing a rootin’tootin’, rip-roarin’, dirtbustin’ entertainment package guaranteed to thrill young and old alike — whether they be hardcore fans or enthusiastic first-timers.

You can never stop making something better, however. That’s the attitude of the 2014 Nicola Valley Pro Rodeo committee as they gear up for this year’s two-day spectacle, which is scheduled for Saturday, August 30 and Sunday, August 31.

“We have some new people in the group, and they’re coming up with some great ideas,” NVPRA committee member Tanya Starrs said. “We’re really excited about some of the changes we’ve made and some

of the things that we’ve added.”

Starrs and her fellow committee members feel that change is important.

It keeps an event vibrant, interesting and in tune with the times.

The local rodeo committee is also well aware that it’s competing with other area communities for the Labour Day crowd.

“There’s the IPE (Interior Provincial Exhibition) in Armstrong and the North Thompson Fall Fair in Barriere. Both events have a rodeo,” Starrs said. “It’s important that we make people want to stay in Merritt on that weekend and attend our rodeo, and important that we encourage outof-towners to choose our great event to come to.”

Topping the list of changes to this year’s Nicola Valley Pro Rodeo is a switch to an evening performance on the Saturday that will begin at 5 p.m.

“We just thought it might be a great idea, and attract some additional people who maybe can’t make it in the afternoon,” committee member Allison Thompson

said. “We’ll keep the beer garden open a bit longer for the adults in the crowd, and try to have a band performing in the beer garden. We’re also going to try and have a few more vendors, so that there’s more opportunity for shopping and more food available.”

Sunday’s performance will begin at the usual time, 1 p.m. The focus will be on children and families.

“We’ve changed our ticket prices a bit, such that youngsters 10-andunder will get in free if accompanied by an adult,” Thompson said.

“Students and seniors will still pay just $12 while adults will be charged $15.”

Sunday’s intermission entertainment will include a couple of children’s events that are sure

to be big hits — mutton bustin’ (sheep riding) and peewee barrel racing.

“I’ve also been talking to someone about possibly bringing in a mechanical bull and mechanical surfboard, along with a bouncy castle,” Thompson said.

“There’ll also be facepainting.”

Both Starrs and Thompson are very excited about another intermission event they’ve organized for both rodeo days — the businessmens’ calf dressing.

“It’s going to be great fun,” said Thompson.

“We’ve had a tremendous response from the local business community.

Every business that we’ve approached has said yes.”

Friday night before the rodeo at a location still to be announced.

“All the money raised will go to a charity of the winner’s choice,” Thompson said.

One thing that won’t change at the Nicola Valley Pro Rodeo this year is the outstanding talent on display in the various events.

The Merritt stop on the Canadian Professional Rodeo Association circuit regularly attracts many of the top 10 cowboys and

cowgirls in the CPRA standings — all competing for points, money and a chance to make the Canadian Finals in Edmonton in October.

While Merritt bull rider Ty Pozzobon won’t be able to perform at this year’s Nicola Valley Pro Rodeo due to injury, you can count on seeing a couple of other local talents. Mammit Lake’s Katie Garthwaite will almost certainly be in the barrel racing event, while Douglas Lake cowboy

Cameron Jacobs will likely be up in the ranch hand saddle bronc.

“We’re also hoping to do a tribute to some of the local ranches,” Thompson said.

“The Nicola Valley Pro Rodeo is one of the longest-running pro rodeos in Western Canada,” Starrs said. “We’re looking to put on a great show this year, and we hope that the community will come out to support it.”

Jackpot barrel racing goes off without a hitch on the weekend

Over 30 horse-andrider combinations from around southwestern B.C. convened at the Merritt rodeo grounds in Collettville on Saturday for a jackpot barrel racing competition. The event was sanctioned by both the Canadian and British Columbia Barrel Racing Associations.

Peewee and youth competitors ran the barrels once each, while those in the open class had two go-rounds.

Emma Antoine from Cache Creek topped the field in the peewee

division with a time of 20.310 seconds. Overall winner in the youth category was Ali Lantz from Peachland in 17.458 seconds.

There were some sizzling performances in the open division, led by Jolene Seitz and her horse Fame. The talented twosome from Savona laid down the fastest time of the day (16.660 seconds) to win the first go.

Just five-thousandths of a second slower (16.665) was the winner of the second go-round in the open class — Candace Chevallier from Peachland on her horse Annie.

Great night of racing at Merritt Speedway bittersweet

It was with a heavy heart that drivers, volunteers and spectators went about their business on Saturday night at the Merritt Speedway.

Just hours before racing was due to get underway, longtime stock car enthusiast Albert Kosolofski, 62, passed away suddenly as he was arriving at the track to begin his duties as flagman.

Kosolofski, a fierce but honest competitor during his driving days, would have been proud of the fine night of racing that his friends put together in his honour.

The highlight of the night had to be the 30-lap main event in the Hobby class, featuring a stellar field of 10 entries.

As he has done so many times before, Prince George’s Grant Powers worked his way up from the fourth row to finally take the lead for good on the 26th lap and earn the checkered flag.

Calder, a veteran of the Merritt Speedway, served notice that she was going to be a force all night long, winning the five-lap B dash in the Hobby class to start the evening off, and picking

up a third in the 10-lap Hobby heat race.

The Street class belonged to Barry

Bussiere, 40, from Abbotsford, as he won all three races in his division and had the fastest one-

lap time.

Bussiere, a former resident of Princeton, was back racing in Merritt for

the first time in several years.

“I started my racing career in Penticton,” he said, “then started coming to Merritt. I actually won the hobby class in 2003 or 2004. I think the last time I raced in Merritt was 2010.”

Bussiere was deeply saddened by the sudden passing of Kosolofski earlier in the day.

“Albert actually put a complete exhaust system into my car just prior to my first-ever race in Merritt back in 1999. He was a real good guy.”

The Bomber six and eight-cylinder class was a two-driver battle all night between a pair of Merritt racers — the ‘Silver Fox’ Bill Fader and young Brad Gillis. Fader had the edge this time around, winning two of three races and recording the night’s fastest time. Gillis won once and finished second twice.

In the four-cylinder Bomber class, it was a sweep for Urban Rednex Racing out of Delta as teammates Bill Brown and Lloyd Morris took all three races between them.

The four-cylinder class also saw the continued improvement of another Urban Rednex racer — 14-year-old Sarah Forrest.

With her dad, Toby, riding shotgun in his own car, the youngster has been making great strides all season — lowering her lap times steadily at each racing day.

“I like the Merritt track,” said Sarah’s father a few weeks back. “All the other racers here are very respectful of my daughter. At Agassiz, where we used to race, there’s up to 30 cars in the field. It gets a bit too competitive.”

It’s a real family affair for the Rednex team, as Brown is Sarah’s uncle, and 21-year-old driver Alexander Thorley (who wasn’t racing this weekend) is her brother.

The next night of racing action at the Merritt Speedway is a doubleheader on August 2 and 3. Time trials each day begin at 5 p.m. and racing starts at 6 p.m.

The August 2 race day will include a special rmemorial to Albert Kosolofski. Many of his family members are expected to attend.

Saskatchewan-born Kosolofski will be missed

Merritt’s close-knit community of stock car racers and fans has lost one of its first-class citizens with the sudden passing of Albert Kosolofski on July 19.

Albert was born on November 5, 1951 in Humboldt, Saskatchewan — one of eight children (seven boys and one girl) — to Sol and Frances Kosolofski.

Albert’s sister Joan remembers her brother as an energetic, skinny youngster — always on the go.

“He used to get called Eggbeater by his friends,” she said. “The name stuck with him for years.”

Albert and his entire family moved to Moose Jaw, Sask. in 1964.

Albert’s love for cars

started at a young age.

His younger brother, Earl, fondly remembers that Albert went through no fewer than 17 vehicles during his final three years in Moose Jaw. “He’d buy a junker, fix it up a little bit, run it until it gave up and then just buy another one.”

All but one member of the family (the oldest son, Rick) would move to Kamloops in 1970.

Albert was then 19 and finished his schooling.

From 1970 to 1986, Albert worked a variety of jobs in and around the Kamloops area, much of the time for his father’s construction company. During that time, Albert began his racing career.

“I remember he bought a rail (a small dragster) that he used to race around Kamloops and over in Salmon

Arm,” said another of his brothers, Melvin.

“He would take it out on Jensen Road in Westsyde and race it, and then run it straight into my garage,” Joan said with a laugh.

In 1986, Albert decided to spread his

wings and move to Merritt.

“I think he was just trying to find his own space,” said Earl.

Over the next 18 years in the Nicola Valley, Albert worked for several employers, including Brian Cave,

Frank Etchart, Wayne Graham, Al MacKay and most recently John Archachan.

“He was a good, reliable worker,” said MacKay, while Cave remembered Albert as a very private person who kept pretty much

to himself but was wellliked by everybody.

Albert became involved with the Merritt Stock Car Association and the Merritt Speedway in the early ’90s, first as a driver and in his final few years as the flagman

on race days.

“I went down to watch him race one time,” said his brother Earl, “and there was a mechanics’ race. Albert asked me if I wanted to go in it; he’d tell them I was his mechanic.

Everybody knew that was a lie.

“I went in the race and got rear-ended by the driver behind me, and mud all over my face from the car in front. I ended up coming second. Albert had a smile on his face from ear to ear from me doing that.”

Local racer Bill Fader has fond memories of his good friend.

“Albert helped me build my first stock car,” he said. “Unfortunately, we never got to race each other.

“He was a real good guy,” Fader said. “We’ll all miss him.”

It is with immense sorrow we announce the passing of Johannes Post on July 22, 2014.

Born in Assen, Holland on October 10, 1935. Johannes, known by many as Joe, moved with his family to Merritt in June 1950 where he later met and married the love of his life â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Stella Mae Abel in 1955.

Johannes Post Trucking, Post Cattle Company and Electoral Area Director of the TNRD were just a few of Joeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s career accomplishments. His most important (and favourite) titles, though, were that of Husband, Dad, Grandpa/Papa, Great Grandpa, Son, Brother and Uncle. Joe was a devoted, loyal husband and gentle, loving father and grandfather. Johannes is survived by his wife and lifelong partner Stella of 59 years, his three children Randy Post (Lori) of Strathmore, AB, Dianne Post (Polo) of Merritt and Lisa Eastwood of Strathmore, AB. He is also survived by his five grandchildren; Miranda (Steve), Jason, Chris (Kendra), Dustin (Megan) and Quinn; three great grandchildren Jake, Johannes and Rhyan and siblings: Henny Stonehouse, Anne Hart and Dick Post.

Johannes leaves to his family and all who knew him a legacy of strength, determination, compassion, humour and a roll-upyour-sleeves-and-get-it-done work ethic. His wide smile, warm laugh and ability to make anyone feel welcome were qualities that made many call him a valued friend, coworker and member of the community. Joe was an anchor to his family, a pioneer in the local logging industry, a great neighbour. He will be deeply missed.

The Post family would like to thank everyone for their support and love in the past couple of years, especially the staff of Coquihalla Gillis House, the Merritt Hospital and family GP Doctor Smit.

Ted Calder Taylor November 26, 1923 â&#x20AC;&#x201C; July 16, 2014

It is with sadness that we go forward into a world of which Theodore (Ted) Calder Taylor is no longer a part, but with great joy that we possess the memory of him and the knowledge that he is happily reunited with long-missed family and friends.

Ted became a certiĂ&#x20AC;ed watchmaker and opened Taylorâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Jewellery upon moving to Merritt in 1957 where he enjoyed serving Merritt and outlying areas until his retirement in 1988. An integral member of his community, Ted was active in the Lionâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Club and Legion and sat as chairman of the hospital board when the new facility was built.

Selling poppies, Ă ipping pancakes, calling bingo on Merrittâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s local station (â&#x20AC;&#x153;clickity-click sixty-sixâ&#x20AC;?) and picking up garbage in the downtown core â&#x20AC;&#x201C; all in a dayâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s work for a gentle, happy soul who loved his town.

Ted is survived by his wife Lonie, his children Wendy (Darcy) and Jay (Debra), his grandchildren Jamie (Jason), Dylan (Megan), Carly (Gage), Ashlee and Dallas, his sister Louise, his nieces Margaret, Elaine (Rob), Barb (Vic) and Diane, and nephews Brian (Phyllis) and Bobby.

Ted has been known by a few different titles in Merritt due to his involvement in organizations and community events, but none are dearer to his family than the following: Dad, Grandad, Grandpa, Teddy, Ted C. Taylor and Yes Ted. The Ă&#x20AC;rst three are self-explanatory, of course, but the latter three should be deĂ&#x20AC;ned. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Teddyâ&#x20AC;?: A name he was often called by close friends, especially if they were telling humorous stories about the past. As his family it brings to mind Tedâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s playfulness. The stories were never as entertaining as the teller when Ted would get the giggles while trying to get something out to everyone. Tears would stream down his reddened face while he gasped at air attempting to Ă&#x20AC;nish the story. â&#x20AC;?Ted C. Taylorâ&#x20AC;?: Usually the name on mail. Prior to her passing, Tedâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s sister Lorraine recounted how excited she would get as a little girl when mail showed up with that name on it after Ted left home to Ă&#x20AC;nd work in the Interior because it meant a little extra money for the family. Lorraine held a special place in Tedâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s heart and he lit up watching her enjoy telling the story over 50 years later. He lit up because his sister was having fun and it brought Ted great pleasure to witness others bask in the light. He also lit up because Ted felt a great sense of duty to his family, friends and community, so the conĂ&#x20AC;rmation that he helped lighten the load of others was appreciated. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Yes Tedâ&#x20AC;?: Tedâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s wife, Lonie, surprised him with a personalized license plate that read â&#x20AC;&#x153;Yes Tedâ&#x20AC;? because it was joked that she thought that was his name. But while Lonie supported and stood by Ted for 64 years, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Yes Tedâ&#x20AC;? did not emerge due to her obediently taking orders as the name could imply. Lonie spent the better part of a century saying â&#x20AC;&#x153;Yes Tedâ&#x20AC;? because while at home working on a task Ted would frequently stop what he was doing to make the rounds of the house to check on everyone and see if anything was needed, so several times a day one would hear Ted say, â&#x20AC;&#x153;You OK Shoog?â&#x20AC;? (short for â&#x20AC;&#x153;sugarâ&#x20AC;?) to which Lonie would reply, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Yes Ted.â&#x20AC;? Never could a man genuinely make people feel so cherished.

Thank you Merritt for Ă&#x20AC;lling Tedâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s heart with purpose since he moved here in 1957. Many dinners went cold but he was always happy to lend his time to make a positive impact on his community and help a friend. He was an amazing role model to his children and grandchildren, a wise word to his siblings, and a loving husband to his â&#x20AC;&#x153;Shoog.â&#x20AC;?

Tedâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s service will be held Sunday, July 27th - 1pm at the Legion.

Dolly Voght July 9, 2014 On 09 July 2014 Dolly Voght passed away at Coquihalla Gillies at 85 years old. Dolly is predeceased by Husband - Richard, Daughters - Dorothy Sandra and Joanne.

Son-in-law Bill Brown. Brothers and Sisters - Christine, Minnie, Tilly, William 3rd, Tim, Theresa, Freddy, Celia, Sophia, James, Elizabreth, Willy, and Shep (Joseph) Voght.

Dolly is survived by her children; Virginia (Jan), Linda, Wesley, Alan, Peter, Greta, Dale, Barbara, Patricia (Dean), and Canine MufĂ&#x20AC;n, Georgina, Lorraine & Ken. Grandchildren; Yvonne (Don), Doreen (Keith), Germaine, Bobby-Lee, Daniel, Jennifer (Randy), Derrick, Amber (Michael), Ryan, (Kay), and Candice. She also leaves many great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren, and a huge family of nieces and nephews.

Dolly was born in the Nicola Valley and was the last grandchild of William Henry Voght 1st. (the Father of Merritt). Dolly was very proud of her family background and the Voght name.

William H. Voght in his lifetime donated to the Town of Merritt; the land of Voght Park, the Ă&#x20AC;rst Hospital, the Ă&#x20AC;rst school, the Merritt Grave Yard, and the stained glass windows in the United Church.

When Dolly was born she weighed 4 lbs., her father said that she reminded him of a doll and named her Dolly. As the baby of the family, Dolly was dotted upon by her dad. After the death of her dad William H. Voght 2nd, Dollyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s life was very hard. Her Mother needed to go out and work and Dolly stayed with her older brothers and sisters most of the time.

She spent most of her young days with her brother Shep, and friend Tookie. They kept themselves entertained by riding horses, walking through the old underground mine from Diamondvale to Colletville with a Ă ashlight, played around on the train boxcars, and went Ă&#x20AC;shing in the Coldwater river.

When Dolly was older she would ride a horse named Shorty from Meadows to Merritt to see a movie, she said the horse would get her home in the dark. Dolly worked helping out with her sisters Lizzy, Sophieâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s, and Tillyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s families by baby sitting etc.

She told of fun times spent with her brothers William, Tim, and Freddy and their families.

They went Ă&#x20AC;shing, hunting, and berry picking and she told of the many mishaps on the road trips, such as getting stuck in the mud or the creek, and of Ă at tires. Dolly worked as the camp cook for her brother Tim at a logging camp. A neighbour Mrs. Parker gave Dolly cooking lessons, teaching her to make great pies. Dolly was an excellent cook, her kitchen was always Ă&#x20AC;lled with her children and their friends, and relatives who dropped in. There was always something to eat, and no one went away hungry. Dolly was a great mother.

She kept all her children together all the time. Dolly and Richard loved to go camping and Ă&#x20AC;shing. Together they Ă&#x20AC;shed every lake around the Merritt area. Fished for Salmon around Boston Bar area in the Fraser River. They camped out to pick huckleberries, pine mushrooms, and gathering traditional foods, or they just went for a nature rides.

Dolly and Richard moved back to Coldwater in 1991. Dolly was very happy to be back with her relatives at Coldwater. She loved her morning talks with Daisy and missed her a great deal when she passed away. After Richard passed away Dolly lived at home with help from her daughter Barbara. For health reasons Dolly moved to Nicola Meadows. Dolly really enjoyed having family members phone or visit her. She enjoyed visiting Virginia & Jan at Christina Lake, trips with Greta to Kamloops and area, going to dinner with Patty, and nature drives with Yvonne and family. Dolly was laid to rest next to her dad at Coldwater as were her wishes.

Thank you, to Doreen and Cathy who were an immense help to Dolly while she lived at Coldwater. She appreciated and loved you ladies. Thank you to the staff at Nicola Meadows, Coquihalla Gillies, Merritt Hospital, Rena Jones RN, and Dr. Schmit. A special thank you to the Coldwater Indian Band for all their help and support to the family, and to Eileen, Daniel, Jerry, Wilber, Austin, Mary and Father Ken.
