SIDNEY — People are being asked not to touch or interfere with baby seals on area beaches this summer.

Seal pup season begins in July and August, reports the B.C. SPCA. It’s at this time when female seals leave their young to make feeding trips, says Sara Dubois, chief scientific officer for the B.C. SPCA. It is not unusual, then, to see Becky Forsayeth photo seal pups on land.

Seal pup season The SPCA asks peaks in July and that people keep their August. (and their pets’) distance from seals and to remember that a seal pup is not necessarily orphaned or abandoned. After the last jet has landed at the Victoria International Airport, a team of people, trucks and floodlights scurry onto the main runway to add another 120 to 160 meters of hot asphalt.

Since June 16, the Victoria Airport Authority has closed its runway to allow crews from Island Asphalt to resurface the airstrip — something that only happens every three decades or so. Alex Evans, consulting project engineer with Tetra Tech EDA, says crews will be wrapping up the project soon, having ensured the new surface is even and smooth and inspected to ensure it’s cleared for landing.

Between 11:30 p.m. and 5:30 a.m., paving crews work against the clock to add new asphalt — a fine mix of materials to ensure the smooth airstrip — and put in temporary ramps to keep the runway level.

The project is part of the VAA’s ongoing airport maintenance and improvements planning. Evans said workers communicate with VAA, NavCan and airport fire services to coordinate the work and ensure everyone on the ground and in the air, is safe.

Take flight on Saturday

An open house this Saturday at the B.C. Aviation Museum in North Saanich will give anyone interested a good grounding in the airborne history of Greater Victoria.

It’s the museum’s annual event, welcoming the entire community and folks from all over to enjoy the displays and educational materials from decades of flying activity on the Saanich Peninsula and the Victoria area. Visitors will also get to see the workshop where volunteers restore aircraft, such as one made famous by former B.C. transportation The B.C. From the earliest days of aviation to the Victoria International Airport’s roots as a military training facility during the Second World War, the museum covers it all. The life-size and scale aircraft start with a Leonardo Da Vinci flying machine replica and a model of the first Canadian-built aircraft to fly in Victoria, moving into the jet age and tributes to current activity at the airport.

The museum is located in a busy place.

Next door, aircraft are rebuilt and nearby Viking Air has breathed new life into an older model of aircraft. The Victoria Airport itself is expending and growing and a bit further away, the military is opening a multimillion dollar hangar and administration building for the area’s maritime helicopter squadron.

Start your exploration of the region’s history in flight this weekend at the B.C. Aviation Museum.

It’s certainly not a revenue source to be matched next year.

LETTERS Citizens should be up in arms over taxes

I

was re-reading the 2014 District of Central Saanich Budget Update and it struck me that the first sentence, “It’s a difficult task each year to keep taxes low while maintaining services,” is getting to be a bit of a cliché.

Whether or not taxes are low is debatable but I think what was meant was it is difficult to keep tax increases low. Calling this year’s increase low is also debatable because once again the increase exceeds the inflation/ cost of living rate (I think this is the 15th year in a row that that has happened).

I would have expected that citizens would be up in arms already protesting the relentless tax increases! I suggest that taxes could be lowered by refusing to continue to hire new

staff and not automatically giving staff wage increases regardless of any increase in productivity.

The police service could certainly be reviewed with additional decreases in mind (I’ve mentioned before that the Central Saanich police service has one of the lowest case loads).

And here are a few more suggestions off the top of my head for reducing the expenditure side of the budget: 1. Find a way to delay street lights coming on at least by one hour. Presently, they come on when there is still sufficient day light.

2. Contract out park maintenance.

3. Don’t send out two or more maintenance staff for jobs that one person could do.

4. Replace (over time) the big SUVs that the police use with

smaller, fuel efficient vehicles. And review the necessity of other staff driving relatively large trucks when smaller ones or small vehicles would suffice (for example, for reading water meters).

5. These suggestions may be only the tip of the iceberg so if another staff must be hired, make the job function (at least part time) to review current practices and actively look for cost savings.

6. Not a direct saving but do away with most stop signs in residential areas and replace with yield signs or no signage. It is not necessary to come to a complete stop at most residential intersections which wastes fuel (and increases CO2 emissions).

Readers respond: Sidney site Gateway or an exit?

Re: VAA Gateway to Sidney, PNR July 16, 2014.

I don’t know if anyone could or will take credit for calling the highway-airport development rezoning plan a ‘gateway’ project.

How could this ever be a gateway site? It is on the other side of the highway and past the entrance to Sidney.

If anything it should be labeled as an ‘exit’ site and maybe we could use this exit as an entrance back into Sidney where a gateway sign could be placed across from the

Travelodge, letting people know that they have arrived.

Furthermore, the proposed uses for this site do nothing to compliment Sidney and in fact everything on the list suggests competition to existing businesses. Who benefits?

I think someone fell in love with the gateway name and decided to use it for the airport project.

However if this could be true, then maybe the user of this idea could move the gateway thought to create entrances to the town.

Readers respond: Downtown Sidney, a refreshing read, North Saanich housing, road rage Get on the trolley I have read with interest articles in the PNR over the last few weeks from the many groups dedicated to the revitalization of downtown Sidney. I was particularly interested in finding out what plans were being considered to improve the impossible parking problem in Sidney.

I did not find any mention on that subject. There was mention of rerouting

the traffic flow, putting in roundabouts, sidewalks, crosswalk improvements, a welcoming gateway to Sidney but nothing addressing the problem of where do they park when they do come to Sidney.

If one is lucky enough to find a spot, there is the problem of walking to where they want to go — especially difficult for those with mobility problems. I had a friend come to shop in Sidney. She finally found a

spot on one of the side streets. After shopping she spent over an hour trying to find her car.

When she did find it she also found a parking ticket.

Needless to say she will not come back to Sidney to shop.

Once again I would like to encourage the mayor, his task force, BIA with their $265,000 budget, Chamber of Commerce, and any of the other organizations dedicated to saving Sidney to consider a trolley. Not only would

Intersection trouble in Saanichton Re: Central Saanich intersection dangerous In reference to Carole Pearson’s letter of Friday, July 4, I also wish to express my concern with this intersection. I have worked as a volunteer in the garden on the north east corner for two years and in that time I have witnessed close calls, road rage and total traffic chaos.

As Ms. Pearson mentioned in her letter there are 12 lanes and it is very dangerous for drivers and pedestrians.

We cannot wait for someone to be killed. I too witnessed a friend nearly run over and one particular busy day I escorted an elderly lady across two intersections and drivers still did not pay attention even though I was waving my hands.

I have lived in Saanichton Village for 12 years and the increase in traffic has doubled or tripled and something needs to be done before tragedy strikes.

It could be a roundabout, traffic lights or increased police presence but we need to do something.

Dry flowers for a long winter ahead

• • • • Recipe - Peaches This is a recipe for peaches which may be eaten fresh, or frozen in a plastic bag, or other container.

• Dip fresh peaches into a pot of boiling water for about 45 seconds, then into a pan of cold water. Now they should be easy to peel.

• Slice them into a bowl and sprinkle brown sugar over each layer. If you have no objection to hard liquor a quarter cup of white wine, or sherry may be poured over the sliced peaches. Leave for about half an hour, then stir to make sure they all have a turn in the sugar/sherry mixture.

• This makes a delightful dessert, especially over vanilla ice cream. Yes, its fattening, but when it comes to fresh peaches served in the above manner, who counts calories?

iving in a condominium on one of the main streets of Sidney can be exciting.

Last night, as I lay in bed there suddenly were flashing blue lights being reflected off the ceiling. Of course I had to see what that was all about and I rushed to the window and peered out.

It was a police car with a green car stopped in front of it and a man getting out, to be met by the policeman already out of the cruiser ... a takedown maybe? (I’m not quite sure what that entails, but I was certainly going to find out. I watch a lot of TV y’see.)

However their meeting was peaceful and after a few minutes of conversation, they both returned to their vehicles and drove off. Foiled again! I’m going to have to start watching cooking shows on TV instead of mysteries!

During what I try to make Helen Lang Over the Garden my daily walk, there is a large hydrangea covered in lovely Fence flower clusters: pale pink, pale blue, mauve and a darker blue, all on the same bush. If you are fortunate enough to own a colourful hydrangea, maybe you’d consider drying some of these beauties for (forgive me) winter bouquets. I’m tempted to “remove” a few of this particular shrub’s flowers before they begin to go off after the first heavy rain, but the plant police would be sure to catch me and all my friends would be horrified that their garden lady would sink so low that she would steal someone else’s flowers. Perish that thought!

I suggested how to dry hydrangeas some years ago but maybe a repeat would be a good idea.

On a dry day, sometime after noon, when flowers are dry, cut several branches about two feet long, containing the blooms you have chosen, making your cut just above a leaf-node facing outward. Place the branches with the cut end in about an inch of water, in a container tall enough to keep branches upright. Put the container in a cool,dark, airy place (the garage). Years ago when we lived in Prince George, I cut a number of hydrangea branches from my parents’ big shrub to provide us with flowers during a long icy winter. They made the car trip lying on the back seat of the car and arrived In PG shrivelled beyond recovery. I was heart-broken, but it taught me a lesson and now I know better. I hope to pass on what I learned the hard way.

Help Prevent Heart Attacks with Vitamin C and Lysine Powder W. Gifford-Jones, MD

W

hy is heart attack the number one killer in this country? Ninety-nine percent of doctors say it’s due to atherosclerosis (hardening of arteries) and that cholesterol lowering drugs are the primary way to treat it. But I suggest cardiologists have closed minds and are ignoring facts that could save thousands of North Americans from coronary attack.

Vitamin C is required to manufacture healthy collagen, the glue that holds coronary cells together, just like mortar is needed for bricks. Lysine, like steel rods in cement, makes collagen stronger. Two-time Nobel Prize winner, Dr. Linus Pauling reported twenty-five years ago it takes a mere 10 milligrams to prevent scurvy, but several thousand to prevent heart attack.

But to take large doses of vitamin C and lysine requires swallowing many pills daily. It’s a tall order for those who dislike swallowing one pill. So for several years I’ve been trying to find a company that would manufacture a combination of vitamin C and lysine powder. Now Medi-C Plus™ is available at health food stores and specialty pharmacies.

The dosage for the Medi-C Plus combination is one flat scoop mixed with water or juice with breakfast and the evening meal. Those at greater risk should take one flat scoop three times a day.

Dr. Sydney Bush, an English researcher, has now proven that vitamin C can reverse atherosclerosis. Bush took retinal photographs, then started his patients on high doses of vitamin C and lysine. One year later additional pictures showed atherosclerosis had regressed in retinal arteries.

he North Saanich Farm Market has become a Saturday morning fixture in the Deep Cove community say organizers.

The only problem facing the popular weekly event is the fact that it is becoming so popular that parking is becoming troublesome.

“I guess it is a good problem to have,” laughed Chair of the North Saanich Food for the Future Society and the market, Penny Gibbs.

She added a dream of hers is to one day have the market held on the lands at the former Sandown Racetrack.

The market was started almost seven years ago after the society was formed by a group of people in 2008, including North Saanich’s current Mayor, Alice Finall.

Along with fresh local fruit and vegetables, Gibbs said, there is baking, cut and fresh flowers, crafts and most importantly live music.

A large group gathered at the Tsawout Gymnasium last Wednesday night to bid farewell to eight athletes who were headed to the 2014 North American Indigenous Games in Regina this week.

The athletes and their supporters were served a special meal and speeches were made by elders from the community in support of the youth who are competing in various sporting events at the games.

“We want to thank everyone for taking the time to come out and support these young athletes,” said Pauquachin First Nation Chief Bruce Underwood.

Elder Ray Peter from Lake Cowichan First Nation encouraged the youth to be supportive of one another and believe in themselves throughout the games.

At the recent B.C. Provincial Championships Jamboree held July 11 to 13 in Kamloops, two near-namesakes, Kaelan Carvalhal-Smith, 16, and Caelan MacEwan, 17, both returned home to sporting medals.

Carvalhal-Smith, with his personal-best Long Jump of 5.83m, secured the silver in his event.

December 7, 1941 – July 14, 2014 The heavens took back our beautiful Angel. Florence McDowell, born in Vancouver and a proud resident of Sidney, BC and member of St. Andrews church for over 30 years, passed away in her home surrounded by family on the morning of July 14, 2014.

An only child, she has finally been reunited with her beautiful parents, Florence and Sidney (Sid) Smart, aunts Nora and Marge, uncles Harry and Walt and cousins Billy and Lynn, all of whom passed before her. Florence’s spirit is carried on by husband Gerry, children/grandchildren/ great-grandchildren Candina, Chris (Tommi [spouse], Elle, Hunter and August), Riki, Reanna, Colleen (Cliff [partner], Carrie-Anne, Mikyla, Caitlyn and Jayden), Kerry (Leanne [spouse] Justine and Liam), her cousins Penny, Garry and Kim, puppy Kouna, and an extended family of church friends, relations and people from all walks of life.

A beautiful, pure soul with an infectious spirit and smile, those who met Florence were friends forever (those with paws and hooves included). Her life was an example of the purest, most understated love and commitment to everyone and everything. A trained school teacher with an affinity for creating and a love of children, Florence will be fondly remembered by many as a puppeteer and the creator of the puppet duo Timmy and Tilly. Florence’s talents, too numerous to list comprehensively; include that of a poet, screenwriter, artist, quilter, crafter, actress, singer, and story-teller, a number of which were explored to their fullest during her retirement years.

Small in stature but large in spirit and heart, Florence lived selflessly, passionately, bravely and courageously to the end, which are lessons her children will carry with them forever. She lived by her own words, written during the last month of her life on this earth, ‘You have a choice.

Not in the count of the days to be lived, but in the heart and mind with which you live them.’ A Celebration of Life service will be held at 13:00 on July 25, 2014 at St. Andrew’s Church in Sidney. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts to honour Florence’s memory may be made to St. Andrew’s Church, the BC SPCA or the Mount Newton Centre - Equipment Loan. “I have begun. Heartsmart expands to Flight Path Devon MacKenzie News staff

New signage along the airport’s nine kilometre Flight Path reminds users of the importance of keeping fit and healthy.

Sidney Town Councillor Kenny Podmore first introduced the Heartsmart Walk along the Sidney Waterfront a few years ago.

“The Heartsmart walk is a way to promote health and wellness and I thought the new Flight Path was a natural fit,” said Podmore, explaining when the Victoria Airport Authority built the new path, he approached them to consider doing the same.

“We were honoured to be asked to participate in this and we started talking about installing the signage late last year. The signs went in about

a month ago and we have already had great response,” said James Bogusz from the Airport Authority, adding that the signs are multi-purpose.

“They have kilometre markers, the Heartsmart logo and a list of trail etiquettes all in one,” he said.

The Flight Path is also located fairly close to a section of the Heartsmart walk in Sidney that can be accessed from the trail down Weiler Avenue and over the highway pedestrian overpass, explained Podmore.

Bogusz said the airport authority will upgrade the path over the years and are currently looking at the idea of benches along the route, although nothing is set in stone yet.

“The partnership between the Town of Sidney and the Airport is strong and we plan to continue projects like these,” he said.
