Say ‘T hanks’ to a Volunteer “We make a living by what we get, we make a life by what we give” - Winston Churchill To all our Volunteers who work so tirelessly, we extend our gratitude for your efforts, your dedication and commitment to the success of the Filberg Festival. Without you it could not be done. We would also like to thank our volunteer sponsors Canadian Western Bank - Courtenay Branch and RE/MAX Ocean Pacific Realty whose support will assist with looking after our volunteers during the Festival. “Canadian Western Bank strongly believes in supporting and strengthening the communities that our customers

and employees call home. We are proud to be involved with the Filberg Society, preserving a gem in our Valley through an iconic annual festival. The commitment of volunteers in organizing the Festival is absolutely amazing and once again demonstrates the spirit of our community. “The Comox Valley is known for its spirit of volunteerism. If you have a task to perform, a challenge to meet, whether it’s guiding the Olympic Torch through the valley communities or assisting visitors at YQQ, your event or impression will be better because of the volunteer. The Filberg Festival shines brightly to thousands of visitors, artisans and performers because of the quality of the

volunteers. At RE/MAX Ocean Pacific Realty we participate in our community and applaud those who join us. It’s a privilege to be here. “ — Dave Procter & Marty Douglas RE/MAX Ocean Pacific Realty Ltd.

Comox Rotary Stage Upgrade Record Staff With the 32nd annual Filberg Festival coming up, a new stage at the park will have its first opportunity to display both local and national talent over the course of the weekend. The new Comox Rotary Stage recently received an upgrade from the usual tent-like canopy. With a donation of $15,000 toward building the stage from the Rotary Club of Comox and $5,000 each from The Comox Valley Community Foundation and Coastal Community Credit Union, the 191 Construction Engineering Flight subunit of 19 Wing Comox volunteered to build the stage. “We definitely like opportunities to work in the community and give something back to the community that supports us,” said 191 CEF Commander, Lt. Teslin Bruhn earlier this year. The concrete stage has four pillars and a timber frame structure, covered with a slanted metal roof for a sturdy, open design. The electrical work is mostly concealed by the new structure, ensuring a

Performing on the new stage will be a lineup of entertainment both locally and from across Canada. Tiller’s Folly, Royal Wood, Jesse Peters and Ken Lavigne are some crowd-pleasers that will be appearing throughout the festival.

Local artists and 2014 Juno nominees Phil Dwyer and David Gogo will also be present. Celebrating his studio’s 40th anniversary on Denman Island, Gordon will be exhibiting an exciting variety of works in rich colours and textures. Seascapes inspired by Hokusai’s “The Wave” are fired in his Japanese style dragon kiln taking three days to reach 2,400F. burning five cords of wood. He also uses other firing styles like complex fractal-like crystalline formations covering porcelain vases in gold, burgundy and aquamarine. Gordon’s new series, “Other Worlds” imagined moons of Jupiter, combine several techniques and multiple firings. Low fired Lustreware rounds out his exhibit with mugs, tea bowls and vases in iridescent reds, turquoise and purple.

For nearly thirty years Dave & Marlyn have been creating functional pottery of exceptional workmanship including a full line of dinner and oven wares. The durability and versatility of their pottery will allow you to use it daily as well as for all your special occasions. This year they are excited to present a new line of work featuring new forms, new glazes, and a new pattern inspired by the designs of Aztec, Celtic, and Haida artists. These influences are very apparent in their latest work which features dark blue geometrical designs set against subtle tones of blue gray, warm rust, and beautiful turquoise interior glaze.

I found with Crochet and Felting I could create my own patterns and began a passion making hats, enjoying the sculptural element in them. After exhibiting my work locally I gradually went on to bigger shows and in 2013 I received the Silver in ‘Excellence in Craft’ at the Vancouver Circle Craft Show.

Kim Naylor from Keeping Afloat creates original west coast treasures from discarded objects. Genuine glass fishing floats, stones from the beach and clam shells polished by the wave action of the mighty Pacific Ocean are all inspiration and components for the jewellery, bowls and candle holders she makes. With a vintage spoon, a fresh water pearl and the odd shiny bauble thrown in, her collections are original, eclectic, and very west coast.

Andrea Mueller is a mixed media artist from North Vancouver, BC. A jewellery designer for 14 years, she’s flipped to the other side of the coin with her love of paper. Old books, postcards and photographs (the older the better) are deconstructed and combined with Japanese chiyogami papers to create a new and fabulous upcycled art that she calls “quilting with paper” to create her unique style of collage art, coasters, magnets and cards.

The Denman & District Lace Club

The club began in 1919 with the visit of a very accomplished lace maker Elsie Spenser who was visiting her brother on Denman Island. Resident ladies prevailed upon Elsie to teach them the art and skill of lace making. Once finished the set of lessons, the ladies registered as the Denman & District Lace Club, now recognized as the oldest lace club in North America. Members of our club have also branched out and now make lace patterns from Russia, France, Denmark, and several different locations in Great Britain, each having their own distinctive style. We are pleased to be invited to participate in the Filberg Festival again this year, having an opportunity to make even more people aware of this antique but still living art form.

I compose mixed media paintings, combing sometimes wood, metal, acrylic, aniline dyes. They range in size from 1x2 feet to 4x7 feet.. They range from abstract to non objective elements. I also compose wearable sculptures and these are composed of varieties of hardwoods, silver, gold, and ivory. They are mostly pendants but also some wood rings.
