Next month Seona Stephen slides into retirement from her duties as nurse, counsellor, psychologist, detective, financial advisor and dishwasher. She’s performed each of those roles in her work as executive director of Carlton House for nearly 10 years, since the retirement residence opened. “It’s never really felt like a job,” she said in her light Scottish brogue. “It has been such a rewarding experience as the residents have enriched my life with their personal stories and ability to still have fun.” The touch of accent remains from her homeland, where she did her nurses training in Edinburgh. As a registered nurse, she brings to the job a wealth of experience in acute care hospitals, including Victoria General and Royal Jubilee; over the years she has managed surgical units, emergency, intensive care, operating rooms, worked with a staff of more than 200 and balanced a budget in the millions of dollars. All prepared her for her work at Carlton House, but the residents there have only added to her education.

Congratulations to our young athletes This weekend, athletes in close to two dozen sports will gather in Nanaimo to participate in the BC Summer Games. For many, like Oak Bay athlete Liam Gatensby, it will be their first Summer Games foray into high are a stepping level athletic stone to the future competition. For many teens, it will be the start of an athletic career that will take them on from the BC Summer Games to the Western Canada Games to the Canada Games, and for some, the Olympics. They will remember this summer as the time their journey started. For some, the BC Summer Games will be their only opportunity to participate in a multi-game event. But they, too, will remember their experiences at the Games for a lifetime. It’s difficult for the News to ascertain just how many of young Oak Bay athletes will be participating in this year’s BC Summer Games, but we know their excitement and anticipation are certainly outweighed by the dedication and hard work put in by them throughout the year. Like Liam, most of our young athletes keep their grades up and contribute to our community in a variety of ways. We should be proud of their commitment to sport and the time they give to do their best. Sport gives kids many opportunities in life, it teaches them life-lessons, not just about winning and losing, but about the value of hard work and effort. It can also present educational and travel opportunities that will further enrich their lives. To our Oak Bay BC Summer Games athletes, we say go out there and give it all you’ve got. Win or lose, you already make us proud.

Carbon emissions criminal Do you feel secure with the tiny sample we’ve so far experienced with climate change? There is much more of it to come. How could it be otherwise when those in control of our destiny remain determinedly ignorant about this and firmly fixed on economic growth at any cost? ‘Economic growth’ especially, is the mantra of death, but so are some other kinds of growths we’ve been encouraged to admire: population growth in an already over-crowded world; energy growth in a world crammed with excess stuff and movement; and the growth of an Orwellian culture of mind control and a rapidly growing trend toward untrammeled police states. In these circumstances, escalating the production and burning of carbon based fuels should be deemed ‘a crime against life on Earth,’ with the highest possible sanctions, starting now. There was a time, not long ago when the term ‘profiteer,’

specifically ‘war profiteer,’ implied the strongest public sanctions. I see a strong parallel with pushing carbon emissions as our world slides rapidly into climate crisis. In all coming elections, we must detect and remove apparent sociopaths and others driven primarily by greed and false glory and put intelligent and honourable people in charge who will act in the true public interest. Meanwhile think more about our predicament. We’ve a long way to go to find viable solutions, starting with determining what is likely to be viable in the long term. Norman Mogensen Oak Bay

Indeed, our oceanfront, marine waters and islands support several species at risk of great interest, which are worth celebrating and which deserve our respect. Cadboro Bay intersection renovation packs $47,000 punch Angela Cowan News Staff

Improvements to the intersection of Cadboro Bay road and Thompson avenue are on the way. Limited visibility, inadequate crosswalks and traffic speed were all concerns that had been brought up by the public and council alike. “Some serious incidents occurred earlier in the year,” said Coun. John Herbert. An independent consultant was hired to conduct a traffic study and came up with three options for improving the intersection. Option one would add a curb extension at the southeast quadrant of the intersection, realign the existing crosswalk, add a bike lane on Cadboro Bay road and extend the sidewalk on Thompson avenue 50 metres, at an estimated cost of $47,500. The second option served as

an extension of the first, and would streamline westbound traffic on Thompson avenue, add two more crosswalks, and lengthen the southbound left turn lane on Cadboro Bay road. This would change the intersection into a more traditional three-way intersection with significant safety improvements, at an estimated cost of $135,500. The final choice council was given was to install a roundabout, which after considering bike lanes, residential driveways and bus traffic, was deemed not feasible. Dave Marshall, director of engineering for Oak Bay, presented the traffic study to council, and explained that if it accepted the recommended first option, it would not preclude further upgrading in the future. He described the options as stages, rather than as distinct choices. “Fiscally (option one) is

Michelle Kirby was strongly in favour of committing to building a traditional three-way intersection right away to increase safety. “Given how close it is to the school, we can only encourage kids to walk and cycle if safe infrastructure is in place,” she said. “It just simplifies it for pedestrians and cyclists. I really think it needs to be done.”

Coun. Kevin Murdoch had concerns about committing to spending more than double the cost of the first option for upgrades that could prove unnecessary, and noted that it addressed nearly all the safety concerns. “What if there’s something else that $90,000 could go toward in a year or two?” he asked. Coun. Pam Copley agreed with Kirby’s comments on safety, and suggested that council could accept option one with an amendment

Formula 1 in your driveway Even if you squint while looking at the Hybrid gas-electric car on your driveway, you likely have a hard time imagining it is anything like an F1 racecar. However, the new advanced hybrid technology at play in this 2014 season means that Formula 1 has never been closer to your driveway. The car power units are 1600cc turbocharged V6 engines with direct fuel injection. They have to complete each race with 35 per cent less fuel, with a maximum fuel load of 100kg (not litres) and the fuel flow is restricted to 100 kg/hour. That would mean your favourite driver would bow out half way through without further engineering help. In addition, the power units have two electric motors, one linked directly to the turbocharger, the other working in the same way that the Kinetic Energy Recovery Systems (KERS) used to do. The result is a combined maximum power output of around 760bhp, which is similar to the output of the V8 cars of last year. It is a certainty that the rapid-fire experimentation that is going on in F1 will result in improvements to our everyday cars. That’s the beauty of this highly competitive sport that is so geared to winning. Changes come faster because there’s no chance to undertake testing that takes ages

under normal testing. Last year, when I visited the Monaco Grand Prix as a guest of the Infiniti-Red Bull F1 race team, I chatted to Infiniti engineers who marvelled at the pace of improvement. Said one Infiniti engineer: “They do things so much more quickly than we can do under normal development processes because they have to. And the changes they make are so thoroughly tested on the track. It points two ways: sometimes what they do shows us the way to go but also the way not to go!” Hong Kong-based Infiniti has made a very shrewd move in tying itself to the F1 team and particularly the reigning F1 champion Sebastian Vettel. The German racer is the marque’s Director of Performance. His association goes far beyond the typical celebrity endorsement, for he takes on a literal hands-on-the-wheel approach to his role. He has played a significant role in the development of the compact Q30, which should surface later next year. He has already left his mark on the all-new Infiniti Q50 sport sedan and sports car enthusiasts pray a

The Carnarvon U14B team continued its silver streak with a second place finish at the provincial championships in North Delta last weekend. The girls baseball team will next head to Lloydminster, Alta. to compete in the U14 Western Canadian Softball Championships Aug. 1 to 4. “They really had a good tournament. They played hard and got a good outcome,” said coach Bill Hawkins. The 12-, 13- and 14-year-olds have played together for the past four years and have excelled under coaching from Hawkins, Deb Buxcey, Jill Moreau, Kelsie Hawkins and Erica Littler. “Coaching for this team is amazing,” said parent Cindy Kind. “They put in hours and hours of their time and (the team) could not have done it without them.” The elder Hawkins and Buxcey have been coaching as a team for the past 15 years and welcome the assistance from their former players. “I love how the young women (Moreau, 25; Hawkins, 21; and Littler, 20) that we coached years ago, come back to help out these younger players and really give them something to aspire to. It’s a real community effort,” said Hawkins. The team practises year-round, weekly in the fall and twice weekly in spring. “It’s just year-afteryear it all builds on itself. The ability to work on things in the off season allows them to play at that level,” he said. The provincial tournament saw the team play seven games over three days. “We were threeand-one in total, and in the playoffs they won right through to the final,” he said. The girls lost to the Vancouver Wildcats 3-2. Hawkins said this team is the first from the Oak Bay Carnarvon baseball association to medal at the provincials. “It’s quite a feat for them,” he said. The biggest challenge in the next three weeks is raising enough cash to get them to Alberta for the tournament. The estimated cost is $14,000 for travel and hotels. “We fundraise throughout the year, but this is kind of unexpected. You can’t be so bold as to think you’re going to go this far,” Hawkins said. He enjoys every aspect of sport, saying simply: “It’s fun.” Although, as he heads into Grade 10 this fall, he will be zeroing in on athletics. “Next year, I’m going to focus more on it. I’m going to take it more seriously,” he said. That includes joining Athletic Leadership at Oak Bay High. An important question to ask when you’re purchasing property in Oak Bay is not, ‘is there a buried oil tank?’ rather, it’s ‘where is the oil tank buried?’ Underground oil storage tanks are common in Greater Victoria; natural gas was not brought to the area until the early ‘90s and oil heat was common. If you’re selling your home, you’ll want to know if there’s a tank buried on your property and if there is: “Get rid of it,” says Oak Bay Realtor Cassie Kangas. “There is a culture of fear around them,” says the realtor who grew up in Oak Bay. The fear is due to the cost a leaking tank can cause the owner – upwards of $50,000, if the spill has spread. When selling, Kangas says start with a realtor who knows the area. “They can pull the records at the Oak Bay Fire Department – homeowners can do that themselves, but that’s why you have a realtor, they can do those things for you. They understand what the records mean and can sit

Those looking to buy in the area should be just as diligent about buried oil tanks. “Again, use a realtor who knows the area. … If a seller hasn’t disclosed that there’s a tank, or doesn’t
