Storm brings hail, no twisters BY BRENDA KOSSOWAN ADVOCATE STAFF Photo by THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

Man places a flower tribute at the Dutch embassy to commemorate victims of Malaysia Airlines plane crash in Kiev, Ukraine, Thursday. A Malaysian Airlines passenger jet was shot down in eastern Ukraine on Thursday, and both the Ukrainian government and pro-Russian rebels blamed one another for the attack.

Pro-Russia rebels accused of shooting down Malaysian plane BY PETER LEONARD THE ASSOCIATED PRESS HRABOVE, Ukraine — Ukraine accused proRussian separatists of shooting down a Malaysian jetliner with 298 people aboard Thursday, sharply escalating the crisis and threatening to draw both East and West deeper into the conflict. The rebels denied downing the aircraft. American intelligence authorities believe a surface-to-air missile brought the plane down but were still working on who fired the missile and whether it came from the Russian or Ukrainian side of the border, a U.S. official said. Bodies, debris and burning wreckage of the Boeing 777 were strewn over a field near the rebel-held village of Hrabove in the Donetsk region of eastern Ukraine, about 40 kilometres (25 miles) from the Russian border, where fighting has raged for months. U.S. Vice-President Joe Biden described the plane as having been “blown out of the sky.” The aircraft appeared to have broken up before impact, and there were large pieces of the plane that bore the red, white and blue markings of Malaysia Airlines — now familiar worldwide because of the carrier’s still-missing jetliner from earlier this year. The cockpit and one of the turbines lay at a distance of one kilometre from one another. Residents said the tail was about 10 kilometres farther away. Rescue workers planted sticks with white flags in spots where they found human remains. There was no sign of any survivors from Flight 17, which took off shortly after noon Thursday from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur with 283 passengers, including three infants, and a crew of 15. Malaysia’s prime minister said there was no distress call before the plane went down and that the flight route was declared safe by the International Civil Aviation Organization. President Petro Poroshenko called it an “act of terrorism” and demanded an international investigation. He insisted his forces did not shoot down the plane. Ukraine’s security services produced what they said were two intercepted telephone conversations that showed rebels were responsible.

What is known about the crash of Malaysian jetliner in Ukraine THE PLANE A Malaysia Airlines Boeing 777-200ER, which the carrier said was carrying 283 passengers, including three infants, and 15 crew members on Flight MH17 from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. After leaving Amsterdam at 12:15 p.m. local time, the aircraft was due to land at Kuala Lumpur International Airport at 6:10 a.m. local time the following day. THE ROUTE Though Ukrainian military aircraft have been shot down over eastern Ukraine by rebels, and the area has been the scene of fierce fighting, the route taken by the Malaysian jet appears to have been subject to no flight restrictions, the International Air Transport Association, an industry group, said. THE CRASH Malaysia Airlines said it was notified by Ukrainian authorities that they lost contact with the plane when it was 30 kilometres from the Tamak waypoint, approximately 50 kilometres from the Ukraine-Russia border. The plane-tracking service FlightAware.com said the last reported position for MH17 was at 33,000 feet just west of Ukraine’s border with Russia. THE CAUSE An adviser to Ukraine’s interior minister said the plane was shot down with a missile, but gave no proof. In a counterclaim, a pro-Moscow separatist leader said he was certain that it was Ukrainian troops who downed the airliner, but also offered no explanation or proof. THE PASSENGERS At least 154 people on the flight were Dutch citizens, said Huib Gorter, Malaysian Airlines senior vice-president in Europe. There were also 43 Malaysians, including all 15 crew on board, 27 Australians, and 12 Indonesians. Other nationalities so far identified were six passengers from the United Kingdom, four from Germany, four Belgians, three from the Philippines and one Canadian. There are still 47 dead whose nationality has not yet been confirmed, he added. THE REACTION President Obama, who was informed by Russian President Vladimir Putin during a phone call of reports of a downed passenger jet, asked that his advisers keep him updated. Boeing offered any assistance that authorities might request. Eurocontrol said Ukrainian authorities informed it that all air space in Eastern Ukraine has now been closed, and that any flight plans filed using these routes will be rejected by Eurocontrol until further notice.

WESTERNER DAYS

Food trucks flock to fairgrounds BY RENÉE FRANCOEUR ADVOCATE STAFF The “Grub Hub” at Westerner Park Fair and Exposition isn’t just cooking up french fries and pumping liquid flavour onto shaved ice. Dozens of food trucks — many of them local — surround the food tent, offering everything from mac-ncheese to platefuls of perogies to slices of homemade pie. “The selection is definitely better than previous years,” said Tammy Maggiacomo, enjoying a Fu Manchu taco from The Stache food trailer with husband Chris and daughter Journey. “There’s healthier options, too. And it’s nice to see places we recognize from around the city.” Yolanda Infante, owner of Yolanda Infante’s Concessions, has been setting up shop for Westerner Days since the 1990s.

Cracked windshields, smoking transformers and flattened gardens are among the damage from a thunderstorm that stomped through Central Alberta and chased fairgoers off the grounds at Westerner Days on Thursday. In Red Deer, nervous eyes were focused on the skies shortly before 3 p.m., when Environment Canada issued a tornado watch in a region sweeping across from Eckville and Bowden, north to Ponoka and east to Stettler. No twisters had been spotted by 4 p.m., but people within the storm’s path were reporting some wild action, including huge and heavy hail across the region. Sandy Miller, a storm watcher who lives on an acreage west of Bowden, said she watched a small river flow through her yard and heard reports of destructive hail at various locations nearby. “It was like a monsoon rain. I just came down and then there was hail. But Sundre got the hail more than I did — they got really big hail. I didn’t get any damage. I heard a guy got his windshield cracked north of Airdrie from the hail, a lady in Sundre, her garden was destroyed, all her flowers,” Miller said at about 3:30 p.m. “They’re still building. Olds is going to get plummeted pretty quick here. I was watching the radar and they’ve got a big purple cloud coming in,” she said.
