President’s Message Howdy friends and neighbours! Yes it’s me again, and the 71st Annual Lakes District Fall Fair! One wonders where the time goes. After the huge success of last years Fair, some people ask how are you going to top that one? But the Fair will always have a few surprises, and with all the events now taking place, it would be impossible to name them all in this message. The grounds look great, and my thanks to all those who made this possible through grant funding for capital projects. Several other projects are being planned and applications have
been made. We would like to welcome Gwyn Nicholas as our new chairperson for the Children’s Festival. Also the Hannula family for the Petting Zoo and Lisa Moore for the Small Animal Barn. We also welcome the BC Provincial Hereford Association to our livestock show this year. So mark September 5, 6 & 7, 2014 on your calendars and plan to attend. You won’t be disappointed. Agriculture Is Our Fair The agriculture industry in this province and throughout the world is an industry that is changing on a daily basis. Somebody somewhere has developed something new or made a modification to some agricultural implement probably as you are reading this. When you drive around the country and see all the farm machinery, keep in mind
that it may have just been some farmer who wanted a better way to do it that developed that machine or maybe the major components of it. The guiding principles of our fair are to give local exhibitors a way of promoting agriculture through its products, its lifestyle and to educate the public about agriculture.
You will notice that there are a variety of exhibits at our local fair. Fair exhibits are used to display both the direct products from agriculture as well as some of the spin off products used in the arts and crafts section. The fair serves to remind the exhibitors and the spectators that “without agriculture there is no culture”.

exhibits. Late openings are viewed as a management problem when in fact it may relate to late exhibits. Follow the schedule explicitly. If rules or schedules are not clear, obtain clarification before, not after, judging. Do not blame the show committee if they fail to bring to your attention that you have entered incorrectly. Light Horse Show General Event Rules Each competitor must know the rules prior to entry. This event is open to all breeds and grade horses. Helmets are mandatory for all junior riders and are recommended for all riders. No exhibitor under the age of 19 shall be permitted to show a stallion in the TCSC Fall Fair Light Horse Show. All patterns will be posted. All horses exhibited must be free from contagious disease and sound. The Show Management, including the judge, may order the immediate removal of any animal deemed to be sick or lame, to be excused from the remainder of the show with no refund. Unsportsmanlike/Unprofessional Conduct: When an exhibitor and/or their representative displays unsportsmanlike conduct to any exhibitor or show management, and/or inhumane treatment of a horse while on show grounds, the Show Management at its discretion, may disqualify such individual(s) from the remainder of the show. Abuse will not be tolerated. No refunds of any kind will be made. All protests and complaints must be made, in writing, to the Show Management by the end of the day, accompanied by a $50 cheque which will be returned if the complaint is upheld. Dogs must be under control at all times and must be on a leash. At no time will any dogs be permitted in the arenas. The Show Management reserves the right to change schedules, arenas, or times at their discretion. For safety, no cantering your horse outside the arenas, no doubling, and use caution around spectators, etc.
Show Office and Entries
The Show Office will open one hour prior to the start of the show both days, and will remain open until the final class ends. One entry form required for every Horse/Exhibitor combination. Every Horse/Exhibitor combination must pay a $5 office fee. All exhibitors must have a signed waiver on
file before their competitor’s number(s) will be released. Show Management reserves the right to cancel, combine or split classes due to number of entries. Cancelled classes will be refunded. There will be no refunds for any reason other than classes cancelled by Show Management. A $50 charge will be applied to all NSF cheques. Entries received with an NSF cheque will not be considered “on time” and will be assessed postentry rates. Post entries will be accepted until the start of the class prior. The Show Secretary will determine when that time has arrived. The Show Secretary’s decision will be final in this regard. Errors or illegible entry forms are the responsibility of the exhibitor.
Camping and Stabling
Panel Rentals are limited and must be pre-booked on the Entry Form; fees must accompany the Show Entry Form. Panels can be rented for $8 per panel. Panels must be set up in designated area. Panel rental deposit of $50 must accompany entry ON A SEPARATE CHEQUE. Deposit will be returned when panels have been returned undamaged. Fall Fair charges $15 for Camping – NO HOOKUPS. We do ask that all entrants do their best to park in such a way that we can fit everyone in. Come early, back in, set up, stay a while!

Exhibitor Age Divisions Youth denotes exhibitor 17 years and under Senior denotes exhibitor 18 years and over Horse Ages Junior Horse - 5 & under, in Western classes may be ridden 2-handed in a snaffle or hackamore, or 1-handed in a bridle Senior Horse - 6 & over, in Western classes must be ridden 1-handed in a bridle Walk-Jog/Trot classes - may be ridden 1 or 2 handed in any legal headgear Reining Modified classes may be ridden 1 or 2 handed in any legal headgear regardless of age of horse
High Points High points will be awarded to the top points earning horse/rider combination in each of the categories. Each horse/rider combination must enter all of the required classes in order to be eligible to win the award. Points will be awarded as per the following points schedule: Horses 1st 2nd 3rd 4th 5th 6th 6+ 6 5 4 3 2 1 5 5 4 3 2 1 4 4 3 2 1 3 3 2 1 2 2 1 1 1 In the case of a tie, total points will be divided equally between the parties involved (Example 1: with 6 or more riders in the class, 2nd and 3rd tie - a total of 9 points is divided for 4.5 points each; Example 2: with 4 horses in the class, 3 riders tie for 2nd - 6 points are split for 2 points each). If there is a tie for the high point award itself, the tie will be broken by the number of firsts from the qualifying classes, then the number of seconds and so on. If the two exhibitors have equal numbers of same placings in the qualifying classes, the exhibitors will be named Co-Champions and a coin will be flipped to determine the winner of any prizes.

Class Descriptions
Halter Classes Horses shown with halter and lead line are exhibited at walk, jog and lined up for inspection. Ring Steward will give direction on how the Judge wants the horses to be presented. Horse is judged. English or Western Attire. Showmanship Classes Horses are shown in hand and will be asked to perform a pre-posted pattern. Handler is judged on turnout of horse and handler, and on ability of handler to show the horse to its highest potential. English or Western attire (halter or bridle permitted). Western Pleasure Classes Horses are shown in Western tack and attire on the rail in both directions and may be asked to back-up. Walk, jog and lope will be required unless otherwise stated. Horse is judged on way of going and manners. Entry fee for Stake Class is $15. Western Horsemanship Classes Horses are shown under saddle in Western tack and attire, and will be asked to perform a pre-posted pattern. May also be shown on the rail. Walk, jog

Trail Horse Classes Horses are shown under saddle, over the selected obstacles of a pre-posted pattern. Walk, jog/trot and lope/canter are exhibited during the pattern. Horse is judged. English or Western tack and attire. In-Hand Trail is for Horses age 2 and under (no cross entry with Youth or Senior Trail). Whips not permitted. Reining Classes National Reining Horse Association rules will be followed unless otherwise specified. All ages horse and rider, shown in Western tack and attire, to perform a pre-posted pattern. Modified patterns may be ridden one or two handed in any legal headgear. Bit checks will be at the discretion of the judge. Copies of reining patterns may be viewed at the TCSC website at http://tcsaddleclub.webs.com under Forms. Reining Beginner (modified) Western or English tack and attire. BVR Super Green Pattern SG-3 (jog and lope circles). This class is for a horse/ rider combination which has never shown in any Reining class before Jan. 1st of current year. Reining Intermediate (modified) BVR Pattern C-3 Reining Advanced (modified) PGRHA Pattern J Never Won a Buckle Reining (modified) PGRHA Pattern K Non Pro rider; horse/rider combination never to have won a buckle in any reining competition. Buckle is for 1st place only. Ties for 1st place will require a run-off. Entry Fee for NWABR $25. Reining Stake - NRHA Pattern 4 - This class to be ridden one handed in a bridle, regardless of the age of the horse. Entry fee for Stake Class is $15
English Pleasure Classes Horses are shown in English tack and attire on the rail in both directions and may be asked to backup. Walk, trot and canter will be required unless otherwise stated. Horse is judged on manners and way of going. Entry fee for Stake Class is $15. Basic Seat Equitation Classes Horses are shown under saddle in English tack and attire. Competitors may be asked to show on the rail and may be asked to perform a pre-posted pattern. Walk, trot and canter will be required unless otherwise stated. Rider is judged on seat, hands and ability to control and show their horse. Future Equestrians Class (Leadline) The Future Equestrians class is open to all beginner riders who require someone else to control the horse. Horse should be shown in a bridle AND a halter – the handler shall control the horse with the halter and lead at all times; the rider should hold the reins. Experienced adult handlers only. Riders must wear helmets (bike helmets okay, some riding helmets available to borrow). No cross entry with other classes. No entry fee, rider must have signed waiver at office. Is your horse quiet? Want to put a smile on the face of a beginner rider? Volunteer for the Future Equestrians Class! Prizes for the handler too!!
Future Equestrians (Leadline) This Leadline class is a great way to introduce your child to the world of horse showing. Horses provided! Each child will be assigned a horse and a handler who will lead the horse during the class. Parents are welcome and encouraged to accompany their child. There is no cost to enter this event. Ribbons and prizes generously sponsored by Warren Chapman Law Office (thank you!). Helmets are required (bike helmets are okay; some riding helmets will also be available to borrow). Limited entries. Pre-registration is required at the Children’s events - registration table will be open from 11:30 am to Noon. Waivers must be signed.

Rules and Regulations 1. Prize competitions open to anyone paying entry fees and meeting rules, with the exception of Division Chairperson. 2. Specified fees to accompany completed entry forms, postmarked on or before entry deadline of August 29, 2014, to Shelley Wall, Entry Secretary, Box 277, Burns Lake, British Columbia, V0J 1E0. Late entries accepted at discretion of Entry Secretary only (phone 250692-7825). Exhibitor passes to be purchased at time of exhibit entry. 3. Exhibits left at owner’s risk. The Fair Association is not responsible for exhibits; however, reasonable care is exercised (i.e. claim checks). 4. The Fair Association reserves the right to refuse incorrectly entered articles. 5. The judge’s decision is final. 6. Exhibitors are responsible for any personal injuries while exhibiting. 7. A “For Sale” sign may be put on any article after judging is completed and prizes awarded. 8. An exhibit will not be identified any other way than the official entry tag. 9. An item not enumerated in the prize booklet may be entered “for exhibit only”. 10. All exhibits must be made or grown by the exhibitor and not previously entered for competition in the Fair with the exception of Divisions I, II, III and X. 11. 8:30 am - 11:30 am on Friday, September 5, 2014. Judging will commence at 1:00 pm sharp.. 13. (b) All livestock exhibits are to be on the grounds by 8:00 am, Saturday, September 6, 2014 (Friday arrivals are encouraged – no later than 9:00 pm). Judging will commence at 10:00 am sharp. 14. (a) No exhibits are to be removed from the Exhibit Hall without prior permission from the Exhibit Hall Coordinator/ designate prior to 3:00 pm Sunday, September 7, 2014. 14. (b) No livestock is to be removed from the grounds without prior permission from the Livestock Chairperson/ designate prior to 3:00 pm Sunday, September 7, 2014. 15. Adult exhibitor weekend pass fee may be included with entry fee (see entry form). 16. Exhibits are to conform to the description in the prize book (i.e. Numbers, quantity etc.). Flowers, vegetables and plants are to include the variety name or identification, such as early, or late or the entry will be disqualified. 17. One entry per class, per exhibitor (i.e. individual or farm) with the exception of livestock or “any other” categories or multiple flower classes are allowed as long as they do not duplicate one another and are not listed in the prize book. There shall be no more than one first, one second and one third ribbon given per class. 18. All entries are judged by the British Columbia Association of Agricultural Fairs and Exhibitions Judging Standards. 19. Basis for awarding special prizes: Points are: 3 for first, 2 for second and 1 for third. Exceptions are livestock, 4-H and individual specials. 20. Community Family Competition 1. A community family must have at least two members in five categories. 2. Winner is the family attaining the highest number of points in the fair. 3. Competition is not restricted to farm families. Any community family is eligible. 4. Exhibits in all areas with the exception of sports, 4-H and novelty events are eligible to be credited to the family unit. 5. Family unit includes the head of the household plus dependants, which may include all family members residing in the home as a unit. 6. Agriculture family or individual must enter in at least two of five categories. (I, II, III, IV & VII)
HIGH POINT COMMUNITY FAMILY AWARD INDIVIDUAL OVER-ALL HIGH POINT AWARD Winning individual must have entered in at least three divisions. The individual (Junior or Senior) attaining the highest number of points in the Fair will be the winner. All divisions in the fair with the exception of 4-H, novelty events and sports will be credited to the individual.

Division I Cattle and Horses General Rules:
1. Owners are responsible for feeding and watering livestock. 2. Animals are to be free of infectious or contagious disease and untranquilized. 3. Division I animals are to be shown at halter with the exception of “pens”. 4. Stallions and bulls are to be handled by adults and under control. Bulls over two years must be shown with a nose leader (ring). 5. Purebred animals to be entered in the name of the owner, any handler. 6. Purebred animal’s name, age and registration number to be shown on the entry form. Current year animals need not be registered but proof of application should be available. 7. An animal must be owned or leased by the exhibitor for at least one month. 8. Exhibitors are allowed unlimited entries in each class. 9. All livestock are to be on the fairgrounds by 8:00 am Saturday, September 6, 2014 (Friday arrivals are encouraged – no later than 9:00 p.m.). Judging will commence at 10:00 am approx. 10. To be eligible for full prize money there must be 2 entries in a class. Classes may be split at the discretion of the fair when the number of exhibits exceeds 15. The 5 top animals in each split class will be blended for final placing in any given class. Prize money paid on final class. **Classes 205 & 206 Female with calf at foot must be shown with calf in all classes, calf may be shown on its own in other classes. All animals exhibited in the classes of registered livestock must be registered in the name of the exhibitor. The animal’s name, age and registration number must be given on the entry form. The said owner is to have been in possession of same animal at least one month prior to the date of entry. All animals exhibited in registered Breed Classes MUST be legibly tattooed. Clean ears so tattoos are readable. All animals must have CCIA tags. The original Certificate of Registration must be produced if requested by the Committee. Livestock Exhibitors WILL BE REQUIRED to place their names and addresses over their exhibits in the stock barns. They are also encouraged to include promotional, advertising, and educational information. Division I Cattle and Horses Cont. All animals exhibited shall be free from contagious or infectious diseases. The Committee reserves the right to have any animal inspected by a veterinarian. The Committee may order the removal from the grounds or isolation of any animal considered by the veterinarian to be contagious or infectious. All bulls over one year of age must be handled with nose ring or humbug at all times. All cattle stalled are to be shown or judged. No nurse cows. All cattle tied in stalls must also be tied with a safety rope. Exhibitor numbers must be worn in the show ring. Only the chairperson in charge of the barn will allocate stall space. 11:00 am - 1:00 pm in the main rodeo arena Bryan brings a wealth of knowledge on the training of dogs. For the past 30 years Bryan has trained dogs for obedience, agility, tracking and searching, search and rescue, as well as herding training. Specializing in herding the natural way, Bryan brings a common sense approach to herding training. Bring a dog to a useful state to be helpful in the early days of training. He shows you how to get that connection that you need with your canine partner. Bryan has worked on cattle ranches and farms as well as having his own cattle and sheep. He now custom grazes both cattle and sheep, breeds, trains and works New Zealand Herding dogs. He conducts herding workshops, announces trails and conducts stock dog demonstrations. He also competes at both cattle and sheep dog trails.
