A world of fun at Fusion Festival

On a Wednesday in April, clients of the Surrey Food Bank’s (SFB) Tiny Bundles program arrived for their bi-weekly hampers, and were stunned to see nobody outside.

The women, some pregnant, others toting their babies, saw none of the usual volunteers with food bins under the tarp outside the North Surrey building.

They wondered if the food bank was closed.

It turned out that they were some of the earliest people to see a major change in the way the food bank interacts with the 14,000 people who depend on it each month.

Starting with the Seniors’ Depot last year, “we piloted the concept of setting up tables in the warehouse so the clients could come in and ‘shop’ for their food,” explains SFB Executive Director Marilyn Herrmann.

The indoor program, with one-on-one service by volunteers, was so successful, she says, that it was expanded to Tiny Bundles, the SFB’s program for pregnant and nursing mothers.

Bringing the seniors and moms inside, she adds, makes the experience more interactive, and gives more flexibility in choosing the foods that are right for ▶ “(There will be) them, compared with the previno more of our ous way of pre-bagged hampers.

Because of an ongoing lack of space, the warehouse is currently being revamped. Some of the racking is being removed, and food is being stored – at extra expense – at off-site locations.

The indoor service area will take up about half of the SFB building’s space. The area currently used for sorting and packing will move to the north side of the building.

Herrmann says the new interactive approach allows the client to connect better with the community.

Recently, Surrey firefighters made presentations about smoke alarms, Surrey Libraries brought books, and Fraser Health provided a “slipper swap” program for seniors. The school district has also expressed interest in sending staff to talk to mothers about early literacy.

During the summer, SFB staff and volunteers are going to community events to remind people about the food bank, and to check expiry dates on non-perishable donations.

“We want people to think healthy,” says Herrmann.

Cash, of course, is “wonderful”, especially with the high cost of such things as baby food.

Director of External Relations Feezah Jaffer says programs for families with young children take planning and money.

“We won’t start something unless we know we can sustain it, and we won’t start it and (then) take it away. But we need that support from the community (to do it).”

The food bank’s records show that among its Tiny Bundles clients, 89 new babies will be born this year.

Jaffer says the food bank might have to provide for each new child for the next five years, and that takes a commitment from donors – if eggs are promised, for example, eggs must be delivered.

That level of sophistication allows the SFB to tell donors how much it will cost.

Last year’s Christmas stocks are also being depleted, making more purchases necessary. continued on page 6

Bruce Cockburn is the headlining act for this weekend’s Surrey Fusion Festival, taking place all day July 19 and 20 in Holland Park.

The Canadian Music Hall of Fame inductee and 12-time Juno award winner will take the Concord Pacific World Music Stage at 8:30 p.m. Saturday, following a day’s worth of non-stop entertainment on the same stage that will include Ash Grunwald, Aidan Knight, The Boom Booms and Hey Ocean!

On Sunday, the Concord stage hosts world instrumentalist Pavlo, as well as Alpha Yaya Diallo, African Stages, Ache Brasil and Tropicana.

Four other stages on site will feature back-toback multicultural performances from an array of dancers and drummers and singers, and even turban-tying and Zumba lessons. (A full schedule of entertainment is available at www.surrey.ca/ fusionfestival/78.aspx).

The festival, considered B.C.’s largest multicultural celebration, will also have dozens of international pavilions representing a variety of countries from around the globe, with colourful clothing and food aplenty.

Surrey Fusion Festival runs from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. both July 19 and 20 in Holland Park, at King George Boulevard and Old Yale Road. Admission to the festival and concerts is free and tickets to buy food are available on site. Pets are not allowed on the festival grounds.

“Summer is a good time for staff and volunteers,” says Herrmann.

“We’re not any busier or any less busy. It’s kind of a time we start planning for the next year… What can we do for our clients? I guess if the weather’s better, people are feeling more optimistic and revved up.”

They’ve been closely watching the seniors’ program, where client numbers are growing, the Tiny Bundles program, and the new Toddler Totes – a pre-K program for families with kids aged two to five.

As planning continues to evolve, some summer programs that proved less successful in staff/volunteer efforts versus results, such as Christmas in July and the community gardens, have been scaled back or set aside completely.

Others, such as the coordination of volunteers from corporate backers such as Envision, BMO, VanCity and Van Houtte Coffee have proceeded, and the food drives from organizations such as Loblaws, Shaw Cable, Latter Day Saints and Delview Secondary School are welcome, even at the risk of donor fatigue.

Herrmann says the food bank’s

client numbers have been steady for the last few years – roughly 200-300 families each day, though some programs, such as the Seniors’ Depot, have grown.

Staff know the clients and the trends, and continue to battle the stereotype that most clients are homeless, drug abusers or lazy. In fact the majority are regular people who need help.

“These are our neighbours. These are people like you and I.” Herrmann adds that two-thirds of clients only come once or twice, while only one-third come every time they’re eligible.

“They’re coming because they have to come” – spurred by low wages, high rents, ill health and age; people who can’t necessarily pull up their boot straps and get a job.

“That myth and fallacy that once people start using a food bank they keep coming is not true. We know that because our client visits are all tracked. So it’s not what we think, it’s what we know.”

The Surrey Food Bank always needs more volunteers (they contribute about $500,000 in mimimum-wage time per year) and donations of non-expired food and money.

A prominent leader of Surrey’s Sikh community was to appear in court Wednesday, accused of trying to kill his wife.

The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) announced Tuesday that the charge against Baldev Singh Kalsi – president of the Gurdwara Sahib Brookside temple – had been upgraded to attempted murder from aggravated assault.

The 66-year-old was arrested Sunday at a home in the 19400-block of 32 Avenue, where police found his wife in severe medical distress. She was airlifted to hospital and placed on life support.

The next afternoon, IHIT announced the aggravated assault charge.

“This tragic incident is domestic-related and not a random attack. The victim remains in hospital on life support and in critical condition.

Her family has been notified,”

among a number of temple members to attend Surrey Provincial Court for Wednesday’s proceedings, which were postponed until the afternoon. The results were not available by The Leader’s press deadline, however, a scheduled bail hearing was not expected to proceed.

Crown prosecutor Mike Fortino told the court the morning delay was due to Kalsi being admitted to Surrey Memorial Hospital. He did not have further details, but did say that the senior was “about to be released” from care.

Jabal said Monday that Kalsi is “very respected in the community” and that news of his arrest “was a surprise.”

“We’ve been working together to build this society for the last 20 years,” he said.

“I think everybody is disappointed to hear this news. It’s very puzzling.”

Jabal said Kalsi’s son told him his mother is “not doing so good.”

Police have ruled out foul play in the death of a vacationing 84-yearold Surrey man who fell ill while swimming at Paul Lake in Kamloops over the weekend.

RCMP Cpl. Cheryl Bush said the man was swimming in the lake on the afternoon of Saturday, July 12, when he became ill and called to the shore for help.

Bush said the man “became unable to swim” and was removed from the water by bystanders.

An air ambulance took him to Royal Inland Hospital, where he died later the same day.

The B.C. Coroners’ Service is investigating.

Hard work by area residents seems to be convincing the City of Surrey to put some extra effort into saving mature trees near 24 Avenue and 164 Street in Grandview Heights. The residents’ efforts are also pushing the city to consider preserving a former horse property on 168 Street as a park, and to also save trees lining 168 Street from north of 24 Avenue to farmland at 32 Avenue, along a steep hill.

The residents deserve a great deal of applause from Surrey citizens, as they are looking toward the future. That’s something that doesn’t seem to happen at city hall, as developers push staff and council to squeeze the highest density possible out of properties, no matter how it changes the character of the area.

The value of thinking longterm can be witnessed when driving along Crescent Road, from the Elgin Hall at 142 Street right to Crescent Beach. Almost 40 years ago, there was a push to preserve the character of the road, lined with overhanging mature trees and lush greenery.

It gained enough traction that it was endorsed by Surrey council.

The effect today is stunning. It is a beautiful drive and preserves the rural feel of the area, despite fairly intensive development.

The same effect can be seen along Fraser Highway, from 140

to 148 Streets. The mature forest along the road, first planted in 1930 as one of the first planned reforestation efforts in B.C., is now part of Green Timbers Urban Forest.

It brings back the sense of when Surrey was heavily treed and lightly settled. That’s why the road should never be fourlaned through the forest.

The drive north on 168 Street from 24 to 32 Avenues is another scenic corridor worth preserving. The area is developing rapidly and the city is building a major recreation centre at 24 Avenue and 168 Street, but that is no reason there can’t be a park to preserve some of the forest.

The fight to preserve seven mature trees on 164 Street, and trees on another property on 164 Street which is up for development, is also a worthy one. While keeping a few trees on developed property is not quite the same as preserving a corridor, it is important that Grandview Heights, just like Sullivan, Clayton or Port Kells, does not lose all its mature trees.

The area has developed to a much greater extent than most people would have thought possible 20 years ago. There is a large demand for homes, stores, restaurants, swimming pools

and other services, but the past does not need to be obliterated in Surrey’s relentless push to add more and more residents.

Tree preservation has been a big issue in Surrey for years, and while council has made some strides towards preserving trees on individual homeowners’ properties, it has fallen short on land up for redevelopment.

It seems that only extended efforts by a committed group of area residents is able to occasionally slow down development plans enough to preserve just a few trees. It’s also time to question the policy of paying into Surrey’s Green City fund.

On one of the 164 Street properties, there are 40 protected trees. Only two will be preserved, and another 45 small trees will be planted. The city claims this is a deficit of 83 trees that should be planted, so in lieu it takes a “contribution” of $24,900 to the green city fund.

This is a pittance, given the value of the homes to be built and is little more than hush money.

Surrey residents need to pay close attention to how the city actually deals with trees in development areas.

Over the past two years, an elderly pedestrian and a motorcyclist have been victims of fatal accidents involving motor vehicles near 96 Avenue and 123A Street.

More recently, two young adults were seriously injured by a pick-up truck while walking in an incomplete crosswalk at 122 Street.

In 2006, the City of Surrey developed a plan to enhance safety by installing raised

medians along 96 Avenue from 128 to 120 Streets. An overhead pedestrian walkway was to be constructed steps away from all three accident sites.

However, the project was scrapped without reason after some medians were built from 128 to 126 Streets.

The incomplete section of 96 Avenue is where the grandmother, motorcyclist, and two young adults were struck. We now have a half-completed crosswalk at the bottom of a hill with poor visibility and narrow sidewalks where 122 Street intersects with 96 Avenue.

Surrey has grown over the past 30

years, as has traffic along this dangerous stretch of 96 Avenue. If elected officials can commit $100 million to build a new city hall and to construct safe, well-planned roadways with medians and proper crosswalks around it, they certainly find money to make all roads in Surrey safe for our families.

How many more families will suffer before council and the city implement a permanent fix to a problem that they have known about for at least eight years?

Everyone is well aware of the issues: crime, illegal suites, and illegal construction. Presently these are not being addressed so maybe give the new faces and new plans a chance. It can’t be any worse than it already is.

of the High Risk Location Initiative under the Mayor’s Task Force on Crime,” Mayor Dianne Watts said in a release.

The task force was set up earlier this year, weeks after the killing of hockey mom Julie Paskall outside the Newton Ice Arena.

Part of the strategy was setting up a collaborative effort between the city’s bylaw department, RCMP, Crown counsel and social service agencies.

The idea was to target problem homes and find adequate services for the people displaced.

Surrey has been using its nuisance and zoning bylaws to crack down on the homes.

“Typically upon receiving a complaint, it takes 15 to 30 days to shut down a problem unregulated recovery home,” said Surrey Bylaw Manager Jas Rehal.

Of the regulated recovery homes in the City of Surrey, 36 operate under the auspices of the Assisted Living Registry and three are licensed by the Fraser Health Authority.

Susan Sanderson, who runs Surrey’s Realistic Recovery Society, questions the city’s claim that it has shut down so many unregulated homes.

The idea that that many people (400-600 in total) could be safely relocated is hard to fathom, she said.

Rehal said the closures were a mix of flop houses, drug shacks and unregulated recovery facilities. He believes the vast bulk of the former residents either found other accommodation or went to another city.

“Some people have left the city, some have gone to other homes,” Rehal said, adding crews have checked shelters and homeless camps and haven’t seen an increase in numbers.

A list of the closures, obtained at the request of The Leader, shows only three of the homes were in South Surrey.

The rest were north of 57 Avenue. A full 95 of the homes were north of 72 Avenue.

Rehal said there are more than 50 houses still under investigation.

Surrey Mounties will be moving into the old city hall, saving Surrey $36 million it planned to spend on RCMP district expansion.

Surrey’s police committee decided Monday to go ahead and lease a section of the former city hall on Highway 10 to the Mounties in the near future.

Surrey had planned to spend $36 million for a separate expansion, an expense that’s no longer required.

It effectively trims the net cost of the move to the new city hall in City Centre from $99.5 million to $63.5 million.

Surrey RCMP are expected to move into the south tower of the old city hall, a 57,000-sq.-ft. space that includes the former council chambers.

Which section of the RCMP will move into the building has not yet been determined.

Coun. Barinder Rasode has concerns about having the RCMP centralized, rather than part of district stations.

She says it means officers will respond to calls from the central detachment, instead of having someone embedded in that community.

Coun. Linda Hepner said Tuesday she was assured by Surrey RCMP’s officer in command that an extremely robust community policing model would remain in place.

The RCMP will share the building with Crown counsel and probations offices, which are taking 45,000 square feet of

the building on the main floor.

The leasing costs represent about $550,000 annually for the city.

About 30,000 square feet of the old city hall is still unclaimed, including the west tower, with 21,000 square feet available, and a further 10,000 square feet in the north annex.

In White Rock, by-laws prohibit any rolling activity such as skateboarding, longboarding and even coasting on a bicycle “on any highway” in the municipality. Technically, however, lack of specificity in the wording of the law may permit the interpretation that these same activities may be permissible on sidewalks.

This topic is back in the news this summer as a result of the approval by Coquitlam city council in early July of the first three readings of by-laws to prohibit skateboards, longboards, inline skates and scooters on all city streets and sidewalks, and limiting them to multi-use pathways. These pathways, many of them through parks, would be signed to allow for sharing by pedestrians and all non-motorized devices, including bicycles, but giving pedestrians the right of way.

Media reports say these changes in Coquitlam have come as a surprise preceded by “little public discussion and little to no concerns raised to council.” The explainers and defenders—the city’s manager of engineering and some of the councillors—say the aim of these bylaws is to improve the safety of the travelling public “in a city with very hilly geography and boarders who can move at high speeds,” and to reduce or eliminate conflicts on sidewalks, and that they are needed to “cover the city’s potential liabilities.”

One Coquitlam councilor also cited the needs of the city’s aging population for better sidewalk safety. “Anyone moving faster than a pedestrian but without the same ability to stop “represents a real challenge,” he said. The city engineer also pointed out that bylaws provide “flexible tools for enforcement,” with enforcement usually prompted by complaint only, and that the intent “is clearly not to prevent a six-year-old child from using the device while their parent is watching.”

Once a fad they are now a mainstream recreational activity and method of daily—sustainable and fitness enhancing— transport, especially in urban areas. But they have invited a new level of attention in the past few years in various lower mainland municipalities—attention leading to regulation by by-law.

The growing number of boarder and motor vehicle near misses and collisions are part of the reason, of course. Boarder and pedestrian interaction on sidewalks and boarder and cyclist interaction on sidewalks and roads have also contributed. In June 2013, five Metro Vancouver longboarders suffered severe injuries in five separate incidents. The summer, after all, is prime long-boarding season.

West Vancouver was one of the first municipalities to ban these activities outright.

The City of North Vancouver has taken a less restrictive approach prohibiting them on a list of 14 streets (including the sidewalks of these streets), but also requiring compliance with safety regulations requiring wearing a helmet while boarding, staying “as close to the right side of the roadway or lane as is practicable,” and not using “roadways or lanes where the speed limit exceeds 50 km/hr.”

Dresses and accessories by Michael Kors, Monique Lhuillier, Akiko, Nicole Miller and others will be auctioned on eBay from

July 18-28 to support the Surrey Mobile Assault Response Team (SMART), a 24-hour crisis response team of the Surrey Women’s Centre.

The goal of Bid to Benefit is to raise awareness as well as $20,000 for the program.

The dresses, donated by a local bridal shop, range from size 0-20 and retail from $150$1,295.

“Given the tight budgets we have to work with, we are always open to new ways to raise funds,” said Sonya Boyce, executive director of Surrey Women’s Centre.

“When a bridal shop approached us with

dresses and accessories, of course we accepted instantly. Then, we put our heads together to figure out what to do with them. We are blessed to have two student fundraisers with us this summer – Cynthia and Courtney – and they knew exactly what to do.”

The largest gathering of Dairy Farmers ever held in this locality taxed the capacity of the Athletic Hall in Cloverdale on Thursday evening, July 11th, at a meeting called for the purpose of deciding the advisability of petitioning the Government to put in force the “Dairy Products Sales Adjustment Act.” The Act, which was past at the last session of the Provincial Legislature, provides that the burden of cost entailed in the conversion of a huge surplus of mink into manufactured products such as butter, cheese, evaporated and powdered milk etc. which cost is at present borne almost entirely

by The Fraser Valley Milk Producers Association, should be shared by the independent dealers, and a uniform butter-fat price paid to all milk producers in the entire area.

AUTOISTS HELD UP ON PACIFIC HIGHWAY

While returning South after a motor trip to Vancouver, two men were held up and robbed at about 12:45 a.m. Tuesday on the Walker Hill three miles south of Cloverdale.

They were stopped by three young men in another car, who using a flashlight and threatening their victims with a formidable looking gun, relieved them of $20 in bills and silver, a 17-jewel watch and a cigarette lighter. The trio then sped away in a Northerly direction.

Dazzled by the flashlight the victims were unable to obtain an accurate description of the assailants.

The Surrey police have picked up the car alleged to have been used by the robbers, same being discovered in the vicinity of White Rock.

MEMORIAL DAY SERVICE

Arrangements for the Annual Memorial Service on Sunday, August 4th, are well advanced.

The band of the Chilliwack Branch of the Canadian Legion has been secured for the occasion.

Rev. Canon Smith of Bellingham, who is a Canadian War Veteran, has kindly consented to deliver the main address.

STRAWBERRY PROCESSING SEASON ENDS The Berry Processing Plant which has been in operation at the Pacific Terminals, New Westminster closed down on Tuesday after a very successful season, the quantity of berries processed amounting to 187,000 lbs.

The fruit which was put up in containers of 450 pounds, 30 pound tins, 15 pound tins and 1 pound cups, supplied chiefly by the Richmond Berry Growers Association, Surrey Berry Growers’ Association, Strawberry Hill Farmers’ Association, Coghlan Berry Growers’ Association.

The berries, of which none but the best quality are used are fed on a mechanical grader which rejects any but the A.1. berries; the fruit is then washed and put into containers with a proportion of sugar sufficient to form a syrup.

The fruit this preserved will keep indefinitely and when required is found in a fresh condition with an extremely appetizing appearance. The bulk of this year’s out put is intended for export.

ROLLER SKATING RINK The roller skating rink, recently opened by the T. E. King Roller Skating Co. in the Athletic Hall is receiving the whole-hearted support of the young people of Cloverdale.

From far and wide come the crowds to enjoy the favourite pastime on the spacious and carefully prepared rink.

ADJOURNED INQUEST HELD ON VICTIM OF AUTO ACCIDENT The local coroner, Dr. F. D. Sinclair and jury met at the courtroom on Tuesday evening when further evidence was heard relating to the automobile accident on the Nicomekl River with resulted in the death of Mrs. Ann Smith.

After hearing the evidence of John Brown eye-witness, who resides in the neighbourhood of the accident, H. V. Coates foreman of the jury after a short adjournment presented the verdict as an accidental death.

The jury added a ryder pronouncing the bridge as unsafe for travel on account of its being too feet narrower than the pavement, and criticizing the gravel shoulders at the edge of the pavement approaching the bridge as being inadequate. It is recommended that these matters be brought to the notice of the proper authorities.

EGG POOL CLEARANCES In spite of the fact that poultrymen generally are reporting a slight falling off in egg production, the local branch of the Egg Pool is maintaining its average weekly output of three car loads.

The clearances for the week ending at noon Saturday amounted to over 1,600 cases.

The second Pool period ends at noon Saturday 20th. While no announcements can be made at this time it is confidently expected that the returns for this period will be very gratifying to all concerned.

CLOVERDALE BALL TEAM WIN FROM LADNER After several weeks of weary waiting and disappointments due to cancelled dates, local baseball fans were treated to a good game this evening, when the home boys scored a deserved win over Ladner by the narrow margin of one run 5 to 4.

Both teams put up a good brand of ball. Palmer Stokes of Cloverdale gave good service to his side especially by way of the expert advice he so generously proffered to the opposing team.

Metrotown modern living at Burnaby’s Station Square

Anthem Properties and Beedie Living have teamed up to bring Station Square to Burnaby’s Metrotown neighbourhood.

Even if you squint while looking at the Hybrid gas-electric car on your driveway, you likely have a hard time imagining it is anything like an F1 racecar.

However, the new advanced hybrid technology at play in this 2014 season means that Formula 1 has never been closer to your driveway.

The car power units are 1600cc turbocharged V6 engines with direct fuel injection. They have to complete each race with 35 percent less fuel, with a maximum fuel load of 100kg (not litres) and the fuel flow is restricted to 100 kg/hour. That would mean your favourite driver would bow out half way through without further engineering help.

In addition, the power units have two electric motors, one linked directly to the turbocharger, the other working in the same way that the Kinetic Energy Recovery Systems (KERS) used to do.

The result is a combined maximum power output of around 760bhp, which is similar to the output of the V8 cars of last year.

It is a certainty that the rapid-fire experimentation that is going on in F1 will result in improvements to our everyday cars. That’s the beauty of this highly competitive sport that is so geared to winning.

Changes come faster because there’s no chance to undertake testing that takes an age under normal testing.

Last year, when I visited the Monaco Grand Prix as a guest of the Infiniti-Red Bull F1 race team, I chatted to Infiniti engineers who marvelled at the pace of improvement. Said one Infiniti engineer: “They do

Hong Kong-based Infiniti has made a very shrewd move in tying itself to the F1 team and particularly the reigning F1 champion Sebastian Vettel. The German racer is the marque’s Director of Performance. His association goes far beyond the typical celebrity endorsement, for he takes on a literal hands-onthe-wheel approach to his role.

Last year, I drove with Vettel on the Paul Ricard circuit in the south of France. He talked enthusiastically about how he hoped to influence future Infiniti design and performance. At trackside, Infiniti personnel were impressed with his ability to tell them what changes they needed to make to its set up after only a couple of laps of the track.

He has played a significant role in the development of the compact Q30, which should surface later next year. He has already left his mark on the all-new Infiniti Q50 sport sedan and sports car enthusiasts pray a high-powered ‘Eau Rouge’ version of the car will hit the production line.

Now if I were a betting man I would say confirmation of production might be soon.

Yours truly, will join the team again next month at the Belgian Grand Prix, at the Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps . . . . location of the famous ‘Eau Rouge’ corner. We will drive Q50s from the south of England, through the Euro Tunnel and on to Spa. Immediately prior to the race weekend, yours truly will join international journalists in a behind-the-scenes visit to the team’s UK base in Milton Keynes. There we will learn something about the fast track work they carry out on the F1 cars. I suspect we will get a peek in what is in store for that car on your driveway and you will read about it here.

The bigger question is with so many small luxury SUVs entering the market, is the Macan worth the $54,300 to get a base model or $82,200 for the turbo?

Looks The Macan uses same platform as the Audi Q5, a Volkswagen Group sibling, but features an entirely different body shell and engine options. The most striking design element is the wide hood that folds over the side of the front fenders, making a seamless, wide stance that is impressive. The hood actually has cutouts for the headlamps and weighs only 17kg.

“Side Blades” decorate the lower body of the Macan and can be ordered in black, a matching body colour or carbon fibre. The back end of the Macan is particularly sleek and tidy,

the taillights wrap around from the side and into the tailgate with precession. It’s the lack of a trunk release that makes the design so pleasing. Instead, a small button on the base of the windshield wiper that electronically releases the power tailgate. Below the tailgate four exhaust tips tell passersby that this is a powerful machine.

Inside What the Macan has over the Q5 is a level of interior refinement that is almost unmatched in the car business. It’s finished with fine leather and a simple design that makes interacting with his SUV a joy. There are several drawbacks though.

The cargo area is long but the rake of the rear window limits taking larger objects inside the car. The back seat I find too small for a family of four people. Since I own a Cayenne, I have a great perspective on the amount of room this Macan offers. Legroom is obviously tighter, headroom is just okay, it is the lack of space side-to-side that I find limiting. The Cayenne is a perfect family choice, the Macan I believe is suited for a single person or active professional couple. Not to say it couldn’t be use for family duty, it just wouldn’t be my choice.

Drive The launch of the Macan in California provided a route that carved through the mountains outside of Los Angeles on the way to Willow Springs racetrack.

Porsche always holds its events at a racecourse, proof that they believe they have something in this new SUV. There might be some confusion surrounding the naming of this car. Both the Macan S and Macan Turbo both come fitted with a V6 turbo. The base model is a 3.0L V6 with 340hp. The “Turbo” gets a larger 3.6L V6 with a higher output turbocharger and is rated at 400hp. The base model would be my choice. Driving

in back country roads the power was fantastic and the additional money could be spent upgrading the suspension from the base steel springs to steel with Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) that allows the driver to set the firmness of the ride. This upgrade was noticeable on the track. The turbo comes standard with this setup but the added power and expense was only really noticeable when the Macan was pushed very hard around the racetrack. For regular commuting the S is just fine.

Verdict I love the way the Macan looks, the interior is wonderful and the handling can be very sporty if the buyer chooses. Here is the issue; the Macan can get very expensive in a hurry. All of the cars I drove in California were over $100,000 with features like PASM, additional air suspension and sport-chrono settings for the 7-speed duel clutch automatic. When I configure a base S with the features I would want like navigation, PASM, front and rear parking sensors, bigger wheels, Bose stereo and a few other odds and ends, comes to almost $75,000, never mind the $82,200 starting price of the turbo.

Having recently driven the spectacular Audi SQ5, from which this car is based, that 354hp rocket is a bargain at $60,000, almost fully equipped. I like the Macan, and they will sell every one to people who want to have the latest, but I think the pricing structure is a bit over the top.

LOXTERKAMP, Caroline Died peacefully at her care home, at Clayton Heights, on July 11, 2014. She was born November 14, 1917 in Carmel, SK to John & Anna Becker.

Caroline was an active member of the Precious Blood Catholic Church, where she loved being a member of the CWL. Caroline did hospice work for 27 years. She loved her bridge club, and travels with her friends. She loved her family and granchhildren very much. She leaves behind three children, Joyce, Bonnie and Dennis; seven grandchildren, Theresa, Alison, Shelley, Kevin, Lisa, Mathew, and Zachery; ten great grandchildren, and two great great grandchildren.

Our mother will be greatly missed ~ we love you mom.
