Local woman finds success at American Beauty pageant Gina Omilon takes first runner up in international competition last month BY ERIN FAWCETT Red Deer Express

A

young Red Deer woman has received a top honour in a recent American Beauty pageant. Gina Omilon, a local beauty queen, was named first runner up in the recent competition. She competed against about 40 girls during the pageant which took place in Florida last month and was also awarded second place and honourable mention for People’s Choice as well as second place for Paris Themed Fashion. The pageant is for north, south and Central American competitors. The categories that Omilon competed in included interview, swimsuit and evening gown. “I am really excited. I definitely didn’t expect it,” said Omilon. “Going into it I wasn’t really sure how I was going to do. My goal was to make top five. If I wouldn’t have made top five I would have been really disappointed.” She added doing pageants in the past helped her to feel more prepared for the Miss American Beauty pageant. “Doing Miss Teen Canada two years ago helped me feel more prepared for this pageant. I think just having experience this time around and knowing what to expect helped a lot.” After the competition during the announcement of the finalists, Omilon was thrilled to make the top five. “I could see my manager (Christi Woolard) in the back and she was all smiley and I was happy. “I was thinking I had gotten fourth runner up. My name didn’t get called and it didn’t get called again and again. I made eye contact with my manager the whole time and she was dancing in the back.” On the way home, Omilon, who wears her sash in public, had a layover in Dallas and during her time at the airport people were coming up to her asking to take photos with her. “People were coming up to me and telling me they were

from Canada too. The West Jet staff asked if they could take pictures with me which started everyone else who was waiting to also ask. It was just a nice memory.” As well, Omilon said she was happy to see the progress she made seeing as this was only her second pageant that she has competed in. “It wasn’t really something that I had thought of doing until Miss Teen Canada. I was really excited to not only see the difference in the competition and how I performed in this one, but just the overall improvement in the last two years. I like seeing that progress.” Omilon was named Miss Teen Alberta earlier this year. “They just opened the division. It was just for the U.S. when it just started and now they have opened it up to South America and Canada,” she said, adding that she was officially crowned Miss Alberta 2014 in April. Before being crowned Miss Alberta 2014 this spring, Omilon has worked hard to achieve other goals as well. She was crowned Miss Teen Red Deer at a provincial pageant hosted by the Miss Teen Canada World in Calgary in March 2012. She held that title for one year before passing it on. And last July she co-hosted the Miss Teen Canada World Pageant in Toronto alongside Luke Bilyk of Degrassi: The Next Generation. She has also been contacted by Miss Petite Canada to compete with them as well. “If I competed with them then I could potentially go on to compete in Miss Petite Universe so that is something that I will keep in mind as well.” Going forward, Omilon will finish out the rest of her year as Miss Teen Alberta before passing along that title next spring. She is using her title as Miss Teen Alberta 2014 to spread a message of confidence as well. This fall she will be traveling to Edmonton to speak at a conference called True Beauty for young girls and boys. efawcett@reddeerexpress.com

Five days of fun starts at Westerner Days BY ERIN FAWCETT Red Deer Express The gates for Westerner Days opened today and thousands of Central Albertans were expected to take in the sights and sounds down at the grounds. A parade kicked off the event this morning and the midway officially opened today at noon. Westerner Days runs through to Sunday at Westerner Park. Officials were out yesterday morning patrolling the QE II Hwy. in hopes of finding an honourary family via Arrest A Guest. An RCMP member and Westerner officials look for a vehicle with out of province plates and pull them over to ‘arrest’ them as the Westerner’s guest family. The family will receive overnight accommodations, get the chance to ride in the parade as well as get passes for Westerner Days, among other prizes. A family had not been chosen at the time of press yesterday afternoon.

This year’s theme for Westerner Days is ‘This is My Westerner Days’. Attendees of the fair will be asked to share their Westerner Days experiences by posting their pictures online and using the hashtag #westernerdays and #mywesternerdays. “To different people, Westerner Days means a lot of different things,” said Erin Gobolos, marketing manager for Westerner Park. “For the young family, Westerner Days may be about kiddie rides, the petting zoo, the family fun zone and ice cream; for the teenager crowd it may be about thrill rides, concerts, connecting with friends and sampling every food we have; and for the adult couple, Westerner Days may be about a date night at the pony chuckwagon races, the beer gardens or lounge and concerts. “We have so much to see and do at Westerner Days. We want people to make it their own.” A number of shows will run throughout each day of

the fair including Spandy Andy, Bandaloni, Super Dogs Disco Dogs, Doo Doo the Clown, the Copper Cowboy, Dale K the hypnotist and the Freddy Fusion Science Magic Show and Dave Sharp who is a speed painter, among others. Entertainment on the mainstage where a number of musical guests are set to perform include Brett Kissel and Tim Hicks on July 16th, Diamond Rio on July 17th, Harlequin and Honeymoon Suite on July 18th and The Sheepdogs on July 19th. In the Molson Canadian Ranch each day KnowleDJ, a DJ from Las Vegas will perform as well the Aussie Rules Dueling Pianos. Randi Boulton will also perform in the lounge on July 18th – 19th as well. All of the concerts are free with gate admission. A number of rides for kids, youth and adults will be found on the midway, with two new rides being added to the line up this year. And the popular pony chuckwagons also take place nightly at 6 p.m. with the finals getting started at

2 p.m. on July 20th. Admission prices are $6 for seniors, $12 for adults, $10 for youth aged 13-17 and children five years and under get in free. Parking is $7.

Kid’s Day will take place July 17th where children 12 and under get free gated entry until 6 p.m. and Family Day on July 21st where a carload of up to six peo-

Ron and Cari MacLean help City in Games bid BY ERIN FAWCETT Red Deer Express Two local celebrities will have an important role in the bid for the 2019 Canada Winter Games. Ron MacLean and his wife Cari MacLean have been named as honourary chair members for the Red Deer Bid Committee. The pair spent their teenage years in Red Deer and have been a couple since 1978. “We’re extremely thrilled to help in the bid. Red Deer is obviously ready,” said Ron. “Red Deer deserves it and the athletes deserve to come to Red Deer.” Cari added they feel honoured to have been chosen. “Red Deer will always have a special place in our hearts, and we are honoured to stand behind you, and support you to secure the 2019 Canada Winter Games,” said Cari Ma-

cLean. “We know Red Deer is ready to host these Games, and we hope that we can help you reach that goal.” Ron added he believes Red Deer has an excellent chance at securing the bid. “We’re second to none. Everything that has ever come through Red Deer has been done with everyone getting behind it. It’s a great time for Red Deer to step onto that stage,” he said. The MacLean’s were chosen not only because of their passion for sport, but for their passion for the Red Deer community as well. “We are proud and honored to have Ron and Cari behind us on this quest to get the games,” said Lyn Radford, chair of the Red Deer 2019 Canada Winter Games Bid Committee. “They are an active, community-minded, supportive and eager couple to have stand with us, and we are so

Golf tournament to be held in memory of young boy BY ERIN FAWCETT Red Deer Express A golf tournament will take place next month in honour of a special young boy. The Lukey’s Light Charity Golf Classic is set for Aug. 23 at the Lacombe Golf and Country Club. It will be a fun-filled day with 18 holes of golf including a number of prizes, hole activities, draws, raffles and silent auction items. The tournament will be in memory of a Lacombe boy who passed away earlier this year. Lukas Stephen Matthew Oszust was born Aug. 15, 2011 with a severe, undiagnosed heart defect. Five days later he became lethargic and was off-colour at home. After rushing into the Red Deer Hospital, Lukas was transported via STARS to the Stollery Children’s Hospital in Edmonton. Days later when Lukas stabilized the family learned of a rare condition that Lukas was diagnosed with called hypoplatic left heart syndrome. Lukas’ heart was not formed properly. He basically had only half of a functioning heart and the left side was completely underdeveloped. Matt and Kathy, Lukas’ parents, also learned Lukas would require three openheart surgeries that would take place over the course of a three-year period. On Aug. 29, 2011, Lukas went into the operating room for his first procedure. After the surgery took much longer than Matt and Kathy had anticipated, the surgeon spoke with them and said they had trouble

getting Lukas’ heart to start up again and he would be hooked up to a machine called ECMO which pumped his heart and provided oxygenated the blood through his body. The surgeon said if Lukas’ heart didn’t begin beating on its own within 10 days, then it probably wouldn’t happen. The family began watching the monitor for any signs and on Sept. 3rd, 2011 his heart began to beat by itself without any help. Due to being on the ECMO and the needed blood thinners to run the machine without clotting, Lukas developed some damage to his brain. His kidneys were also damaged, but still worked with a little bit of help from some medicine. Lukas spent the next nine months in the hospital recovering, getting stronger and ultimately working towards the second heart surgery. On May 1st, 2012 Lukas had his second surgery. Again, Lukas’ body did not react how the doctors thought it would. There were adjustments needed so they had to go back and re-do the surgery two days later. Things did not work and the doctors could not figure it out. Lukas was incubated and his head was swelling and the blood in his head could not drain as fast as it was collecting. Doctors decided it was time to go in and perform his third open-heart surgery within days of each other. After the surgery, the Oszust family was still left without answers. Lukas’ head was still swollen and he still required a breathing tube. His central IV line had also now developed a fungal

infection which had started growing in his blood. Miraculously two weeks later the infection was gone. On June 25th, 2012 the breathing tube was removed and Lukas was doing much better. His kidneys did not recover from the string of surgeries though and he would rely on peritoneal dialysis to filter his blood. Lukas spent the next five months getting stronger and more stable. On Dec. 1st, 2012 after spending 16 months in the hospital, Lukas made it home. Due to his requirements, the doctors wanted 24/7 care for him at home. They were able to secure some government funding and hired night care workers to help with Lukas at home. But medical equipment was also needed. Lukas needed oximeters to monitor his oxygen levels and a blood pressure machine to check his vitals daily. A special hospital crib was also needed for Lukas to maintain a proper incline to allow his blood to drain normally. There were also specialty scales, IV poles, feeding pumps and more. While some of the equipment was covered under assistance programs, not all of it was. But the Oszusts made it work and decided that having Lukas home with them and sister Lylah, 6, was the most important thing. On Jan. 21st of this year, Lukas was admitted to the Stollery Children’s Hospital with an infection in his dialysis line. The following day he underwent a procedure to remove the infected line with the hopes of putting a new one back in a few days later. That didn’t happen. Lukas passed away on Jan. 24th with his family by his side. “Lukey was a light that shone in our lives. He taught us a lot about how to take a small thing and how it can be made into a really awesome thing – something as simple as a smile – and make everyone’s lives so much better. To see the relationship be-

tween him and his sister even though there was never a word spoken, yet, more love than I have ever seen in my life between those two, “ said Kathy. “People are excited for the golf tournament and to see us not just laying around, grieving him sadly, but doing this to remember him by. Lukas was a lot of fun and brought so much joy into our lives. We want to be able to show his joy through something fun. “His little short life has changed our lives and so many lives of others for the better and I wouldn’t take any of that back for anything. We get to bless other people through our little blessing too. We want people to know that yes it’s been hard and it’s dark at times, even now, but it can still be made into something beautiful. We have found the beauty.” Matt and Kathy wanted to honour Lukas’ memory and thought a golf tournament would be a great way to do so. Proceeds raised at the tournament will go towards helping families with sick children attain specialized medical equipment to maintain their child’s health at home. As well, the Oszusts’ hope is to include a room sponsorship at the Ronald McDonald House of Northern Alberta. These funds would help cover operating costs to run the House, while at the same time remembering Lukas and the room the family stayed in for so long (Room 225). The funds would also help provide ‘Home for Dinners’ at the House. Golfer registration is limited to the first 144 golfers. The hope is that Lukey’s Light Golf Classic will take place every year. Now, the midway at Westerner Park is in full swing and the sights and sounds of the fair can be heard from miles away. This year’s theme for Westerner Days is ‘This is My Westerner Days’. Attendees of the fair will be asked to share their Westerner Days experiences by posting their pictures online and using the hashtag #westernerdays and #mywesternerdays. It is always a great time of year and one that many locals look forward to. Westerner Days is not only a chance to kick back and enjoy time with family and friends, but it’s also a chance for the community to celebrate and come together with a number of pancake breakfasts and chili cook-offs being held. Many businesses also partake in the festivities and decorate their offices with western themed décor. The City transforms back into the western era for the week of the fair and it’s Central Alberta’s biggest summer celebration. Westerner Days has something for every age whether it is the rides, the food, the concerts and other entertainment or even the pony chuckwagon races and agriculture shows.

Entertainment on the mainstage where a number of musical guests are set to perform include Brett Kissel and Tim Hicks this evening, Diamond Rio on July 17th, Harlequin and Honeymoon Suite on July 18th and The Sheepdogs on July 19th. One of the most popular fixtures at Westerner Days is the pony chuckwagons. Crowds of over 4,000 people gather nightly to take in this event while drivers from western Canada and the U.S. compete over the five days all vying for the coveted North American championship buckle and trophy. So we encourage everyone to get out, have fun and enjoy all of what Westerner Days has to offer this year. The fair gets bigger and better each year and we have no doubt that this will be one of the best yet.

Charities are being punished by anti-spam law Canada’s anti-spam law came into force on July 1st. Everyone calls it ‘CASL’ since its real name is an unwieldy 52 words long.

FROM Proponents have touted CASL as a giant leap for economic efficiency in e-commerce by making spam illegal. And CASL does list the promotion of ‘efficiency’ as its purpose. But contrary to the good results this efficiency may bring, CASL could have a decimating effect on charities. Here’s how. Of all the prohibitions in CASL, the one most significant for charities is the prohibition on sending a so-called ‘commercial electronic message’ (CEM) without the prior consent of the recipient. This includes all messages sent by text, sound, voice, or image to an email address, telephone account, and even instant messaging account. This is supposed to prevent spam. Effectively, what it does is make all nonpersonal electronic messages illegal, unless you can find an exemption somewhere in the CASL or its regulations. This is the inverse of what sensible legislation does.

Sensible laws target bad behaviour, not render all behaviours bad until proven good. Also, a single email sent to a single recipient can run afoul of the law because there is nothing in CASL saying that spam must have multiple recipients, multiple iterations, or the like. The consequences of this prohibition will be particularly burdensome for charities. CASL contains no definition of ‘commercial’, instead defining a ‘commercial activity’ as deeds performed with or without the expectation of profit – even though a dictionary will confirm that ‘commercial’ is inherently tied to the expectation of profit. And as a result, we are left to ferret out for ourselves CASL’s idiosyncratic use of ‘commercial.’ This is an enormous source of confusion. Had CASL relied on the dictionary definition, charities could rest assured it does not apply to them since they are noncommercial by nature. And that would be a perfectly reasonable conclusion since CASL contains no definition of ‘commercial.’ In fact, many charitable organizations have continued operations as normal unaware that CASL has hung over them the sword of Damocles. Simply put, CASL does apply to charities. During the government’s consultations about CASL, some members of the charitable sector argued compliance would

be too onerous for small charities with limited resources. It complicates fundraising. It restricts how volunteers are contacted. It makes volunteer board member training more complex since each now needs to understand the ins and outs of CASL. The government responded by including a fundraising exemption specifically for charities (sorry, non-profits, you’re not included). As a result, when the primary purpose of a CEM is fundraising, a registered charity may send it without the prior consent of recipients. Note that since charities have been granted a limited exemption, the intention must be for the rest of CASL to apply to charities. As it stands, the only other times that CASL permits charities to send CEMs is when recipients have previously provided explicit consent or have implicitly consented by volunteering or donating within the last two years. All other CEMs are illegal, unless another of CASL’s convoluted exemptions applies. As someone who works in the charitable sector, I know that this will change the way that our work is done – and change it for the worse. Many of the electronic messages relied upon by charities will suddenly become illegal. Plus, with the possibility of a $10 million administrative monetary penalty for failure to comply, CASL will have a chilling effect on how charities

contact the interested public by electronic means – this is the opposite of innovation. Effectively, CASL interferes with the institutional property of charities by making it illegal for them to contact people on their own email distribution lists. This is devastating since these lists are often the result of years of labour and form a large part of the value of an organization. CASL also interferes with the ability of individuals to express themselves freely and to associate with others. And we are meant to believe that this interference will somehow promote efficiency in e-commerce? Not in the charitable sector. Why has the government done this? It’s difficult to believe that charities are so greatly impeding the efficiency of e-commerce in Canada that a law is necessary. So why punish them? Why should CASL interfere with otherwise legitimate charitable activities? Likely it’s just sloppy legislation. What is most frustrating about this is that all the government needed to do was include a short provision exempting charities. It was just that simple. Red Deer RCMP zeros in on impaired drivers Red Deer RCMP have a new tool in their belts when it comes to nabbing impaired drivers - four Red Deer officers are now certified Drug Recognition Experts (DREs), accredited by the International Association of Chiefs of Police. These skills were put to good use last month when check

stops identified two Red Deer drivers under the influence of drugs. “DREs can identify and charge impaired drivers whether they’re on illicit street drugs, alcohol, prescription drugs or a combination of intoxicating substances,” said Cpl. Matt LaBelle with Red Deer RCMP Traffic Services. “DREs are called in when drivers perform poorly on

field sobriety tests and alcohol has been ruled out as a factor. They are trained to administer psychophysical tests and conduct examinations, including pupil size, reaction to light, blood pressure, pulse rate, body temperature and muscle tone. If they believe the driver is impaired by a drug, DREs can demand a blood, urine or saliva sample.” LaBelle said Red Deerians will see increased check stops year-round as RCMP zero in on impaired drivers. While impaired driving is a year-round issue, Red Deer RCMP see the highest numbers of casualty collisions involving impaired drivers during warm weather months.

MATT LABELLE Most occur on weekends, and impaired driving collisions also tend to increase around long weekends. “Drivers who choose to drive impaired don’t only face the possibility of killing themselves, their friends or someone else, they also face very serious legal, financial and social consequences,” said LaBelle. “Now that RCMP have increased our ability to detect and prosecute drugimpaired drivers, we hope more people will make the right choice instead of the dangerous one.” A number of infractions were discovered during a recent check stop in Red Deer last month. Two drug-impaired drivers were arrested and have charges pending, two 30-day suspensions were given out for GDL drivers blowing 0-50 mg%, one 72-hour suspension was handed down for a driver who blew 50-100 mg%, two 24-hour suspensions for drivers who had consumed drugs were also issued and two suspended drivers were charged and their vehicles seized for a minimum of 30 days. As well, two people were charged with driving without insurance (starting fine is $2,875), there was also one charge of possession of stolen property, one charge of breaching conditions of a release, as well, five arrest warrants were executed and 13 other provincial charges were also given during the check stop. Citizens are encouraged to report impaired drivers by calling 911 with the license plate (partial plates are also useful), colour and make of vehicle, location and direction of travel. - Fawcett

Local church offers free camp for kids BY KALISHA MENDONSA Red Deer Express For many families, summer camps are not in the budget – Camp Edge overcomes this by offering a free, three-day summer camp for kids across Red Deer. The camp runs from July 23rd, 24th and 25th from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Family Of Faith Church. Family Of Faith Church has put together an array of events for children that are Kindergarten ages all the way up to Grade 6. The different groups of camp include art, dance, soccer, basketball and a ‘junior kidz’ camp for ages four to six. “Basically, what happens is after they’ve been signed in, they come into our church sanctuary and we do a bunch of Minute To Win It style games. We show video clips and other things to match the theme that changes every day, and that goes on for about an hour. From there, they split into whatever camp they signed up for,� said Jaime Huiz-

ing, a children’s pastor at Family Of Faith. The camp is organized and run by volunteers to eliminate sign up fees and make the program accessible for children who may not have the opportunity otherwise.

said Huizing. “Over 50 per cent of the kids who come are only able to do so because it’s free. And we have a lot of fun – it’s not a low calibre camp just because it’s free. We make sure we have a lot of fun, high-quality activities. Kids are super pumped and I think I feed off of that energy and it makes it fun.� Volunteers from the church are also offering rides to children who live in the areas of Riverside Meadows, Fairview, Highland Green and Normandeau. Huizing said the camp is available to anyone who registers. Registration can only be done online at www.familyoffaith.ca on the homepage, and must be completed in order for a child to participate.

CITY BRIEFS FIRES SPUR AIR QUALITY ADVISORY Smoke from forest fires burning in the Northwest Territories continues to impact air quality across northern Alberta, and this impact is expected to extend across additional communities in northern and Central Alberta. As such, Alberta Health Services (AHS) expanded the precautionary air quality advisory issued July 7th. The advisory is in effect for all communities in the Central, North and Edmonton Zones of AHS. Although minor smoke conditions do not typically cause health concerns in healthy individuals, if smoke conditions become more severe, even healthy individuals may experience irritation of eyes and throat, and possibly shortness of breath. Individuals experiencing symptoms can also call Health Link Alberta 24 hours a day, seven days a week, toll-free at 1-866-408LINK (5465), to speak to a registered nurse. Information about the air quality in Alberta is updated through Alberta’s Air Quality Health Index at http://airquality.alberta. ca. Air quality information is also available by phone at 1-877-247-7333.

URBAN CHICKEN LICENSES Last week, Red Deer City council gave second and third reading to the Chicken Bylaw, opening the doors to new chicken licenses within Red Deer. “Residents can apply to have up to four chickens per household, and we encourage them to apply in person if possible, as there are only 65 licenses up for grabs in Red Deer this year,” said Erin Stuart, development and

BRIDGE DISRUPTIONS ELIMINATED The construction in the westbound lanes of the 67 St. bridge will no longer affect commuters during peak travel times. Construction will be halted from 6:30 to 9 a.m. and 4 to 6 p.m. allowing both westbound lanes to be open. During off-peak hours, westbound traffic will be down to one lane. Crews will continue to work on the following projects and are expected to wrap up by September - installation of guardrail on the east side of river, lane resurfacing and deck joint repair on west side of river.

RESIDENTS LEARN ABOUT FIRE PREVENTION Red Deer Emergency Services (RDES) are knocking on doors in neighbourhoods that have experienced a fire to try to prevent similar incidents in future, as part of a new program called After the Fire. This is a modification of the RDES’s Home Safety Program, which consists of a designated schedule of visits to check on fire and injury hazards and install free smoke alarms and batteries where required. The After the Fire program will build on the success of the Home Safety Program by also performing safety checks and free smoke alarm installations, but will target neighbourhoods that have recently seen a fire. Everyday Banking Freedom ATB is refunding $6M because it’s the right thing to do ATB Financial has contacted 19,159 customers across the province who qualify to switch to a no-fee monthly chequing account. While 120,000 of their customers are enjoying the benefits of the Freedom Account (a no-fee account for individuals 59 and over), another 19,000 had not yet signed up. To make it right, ATB is contacting all eligible customers 59 and better who don’t already have the Freedom Account, switching over those who feel the account is right for them, and reimbursing all regular monthly account fees paid back to the date customers became eligible—as far back as 2007 when the account was introduced. It’s a move that could cost ATB up to $6 million. “It’s the right thing to do,” says Rob Bennett, Executive VP, ATB Financial. “We could say that it’s up to the customer to get in touch with us, but that just doesn’t feel right and frankly, that’s just not the way we’re going to do business at ATB Financial.” ATB is also working to improve how they inform customers about the Freedom Account once they reach 59. “It’s an opportunity we’ve missed for some of our customers, and we can do better for them,” says Bennett. Bennett further commented, “Doing what’s right is important to us, while we’re 75 years old, we’re working hard to take a “no bull” approach and shake out some old school banking stiffness. We started with the question ‘why do banks do this?’ and we started immediately changing how we look at how we treat

our customers. We did it last year when we introduced our Clear-Cut Mortgage rate that took negotiation out of the equation, and we stopped selling market- linked GICs that do not perform as advertised. Why? Because it didn’t make sense and wasn’t fair to our customers.” ATB Financial’s Freedom account is different. Lots of banks offer some form of ‘seniors’ banking. Ray Bagley – a true pioneer of local rodeos The summer season of fairs, exhibitions, rodeos and stampedes is well underway. Unfortunately, one of the real pioneers of rodeos, stampedes and chuckwagon racing, who was also from the Red Deer area, has largely been forgotten. The man was Ray Bagley. Raphael Venerarz ‘Ray’ Bagley was born in a log shack on a homestead near Sidney, Iowa, in January 1880. In 1892, he moved with his family to the Lacombe area, settling on a homestead east of the town. One of his fondest memories was being taken by his parents with his siblings on an oxen-driven hayrack to the first Lacombe Fair in 1893. In 1897, Bagley moved to his own homestead in the Eureka Valley district, on the north side of the Red Deer River. He married

DAWE Elizabeth (Danny) Swanson in 1901 and built a log house on the east side of a large coulee. A big setback came when a fire swept across the ranch and claimed the logs that had been collected for the new home. Ray and Danny were undaunted and continued to build up their ranch, which Ray named the Bob Tail Ranch. Over time, their hard work paid off and they were able to accumulate nearly 1.5 sections of land. They also raised a large family of five boys and two girls. Eventually, Ray had

several hundred head of cattle as well as a number of horses. He was particularly fond of racehorses, and raised some notable champion racers including Yakima, King Fisher and Flying Dutchman. Red Deer, not Lacombe, was the closest town. Red Deer also became the home of Ray’s parents after they moved back to Iowa, but then decided to return to Central Alberta in 1907. However, for many years, the Bagleys had to ford the Red Deer River to get supplies, take the cattle and horses to market and/or visit family. The situation improved in 1922 when the East (Joffre) Bridge was built across the river. Before the First World War, Ray was a participant in the Red Deer Fair. Not surprisingly, he was often the winner of the popular

horse races. After the War, he became very active with rodeo. In 1922, he helped to organize Red Deer’s first Labour Day Stampede and the next year he helped to organize the first Veterans’ Stampede for the Great War Veterans Association in Red Deer. Ray took a strong interest in the chuckwagon races, known as the Rangeland Derby, which were held for the first time in the summer of 1923 at the

Calgary Stampede. In 1924, he teamed with the famous Tom Lauder. They won the Rangeland Derby at the Calgary Stampede and then won the first running of the chuckwagons at the Red Deer Fair two weeks later. Ray became so enthused by rodeos and stampedes that he hosted one on the Bob Tail Ranch at the end of August, 1924. Similar stampedes were consequently organized on the Bob Tail Ranch in succeeding years.

Meanwhile, tragedy struck when in 1921 Ray’s young son Fay (Patrick) was hit in the head by a baseball during a game and died of his injuries. The family moved to Onion Lake, Saskatchewan, in the mid-1920s where they started a new ranch. The family later moved to the Coleman, Alberta district in 1940 and established the Sleeping Giant Mountain Ranch (later known as the Crowsnest Ranch).

New suites unveiled at hospital BY KALISHA MENDONSA Red Deer Express The new Kinsmen Care by Patient Suite was unveiled last week at the Red Deer Regional Hospital. Three new rooms and an apartment style shared space have been developed and are ready for parents to make themselves comfortable. “Nurses are helping mom to get through transitioning the baby between hospital and home. If your child has a special need, it’s very, very scary to go home,” said Cynthia de Boer, project officer for the Red Deer Regional Health Foundation. “It keeps the baby with mom and dad, and helps make the transition between hospital and home more comfortable and safe.” The Kinsmen Club of Red Deer granted the hospital a total of $340,000 over the last three years which went to funding items such as new beds, upgraded furnishings, renovations, bassinettes, a teen lounge and an Oilers room. Those funds also went to cardiac monitors, incubators, overhead heaters and fetal monitors. “It’s absolutely awesome to see something like this

come together. To give back to the community and see something like this come together is just amazing,” said Ryan Philip, current director of the Kinsmen Club Association. The three bright rooms include brand new beds, reclining chairs that fold into futons, murals of Kinsmen Red Deer projects and even medical supplies so that babies can stay in those rooms. “Basically, we have three private suites which allow the parents to come and stay with their children. They have the privacy, and each suite is set up so that depending on the situation, the child can receive medical attention individually, in the suite and they aren’t moved around. They don’t have to worry about being uprooted,” said Rob Kellough, director of Red Deer Regional Health Centre. Allison Hicks, head nurse at the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) of Red Deer Regional Hospital, said, “Now with the three rooms, we can allow the dads and the babies back here. It also helps, as our NICU is constantly full. This will really help with overflow to help the babies and parents back here.” The significance of hav-

Latest census shows Red Deer is home to 98,585 Red Deer’s population continues to grow according to 2014 census results. From 2013 to 2014, 1,476 new residents decided to call Red Deer home, an increase of 1.5%. “Red Deer is a vibrant, young community and it’s great to see it continues to grow year after year,” said Jackie Kurylo, census

project manager. “In just one year we’ve grown from 97,109 to 98,585 with the average age being 31.” The strongest areas of growth in Red Deer occurred in Vanier Woods with 603 new residents and in Timberlands with 441 new residents. The growth in these two neighborhoods can be attributed to the new developments in

both neighborhoods. “The City conducts a census almost every year to get an exact count of our population which helps us plan for growth and development,” said Kurylo. “It also gives us an opportunity to better understand and address the needs of our community.” This was the second year resi-

POLICE BRIEFS STABBING ON WALKING BRIDGE RCMP are investigating a stabbing that took place on the CN walking bridge. At 1:30 a.m. on July 11th, a man was crossing to the north end of the walking bridge when he was approached by three men who demanded his wal-

let. A scuffle took place and the victim was stabbed in the hand by one of the suspects. At that point, the victim ran away from the suspects. The victim attended Red Deer Regional Hospital with minor injury to his hand. Red Deer RCMP are asking for the public’s assistance in locating the three men.

The first suspect, who stabbed the victim, is described as Aboriginal, about 6’2” tall and in his 30s. He had short hair and a halfsleeve tattoo on his left arm. He was wearing a short black leather vest with no shirt underneath and may have bruising or scraping on his face from the scuffle.

The second and third suspects are both described as Caucasian, in their 30s and tall and skinny. They were both wearing blue jeans and one wore a blue hoodie and the other wore a white tank top.

ATV DAMAGE TO CITY HALL PARK Police continue to investigate after City Hall Park was damaged. At 4:45 a.m. on July 11th, RCMP were called to City Hall Park in response to a report of two males driving an ATV through the park. A witness reported that the two males appeared to be intoxicated; no description of them is available. The ATV is described as a CanAm Renegade. RCMP made patrols of the area but did not locate the suspects or the ATV. The damage to several flowerbeds in City Hall Park was extensive, but City officials do not yet have an estimate as to the dollar value of that damage. Anyone with information that may assist the police in solving this crime is asked to call Red Deer RCMP at 403343-5575.

BOY APPROACHED Red Deer RCMP are searching for a man who approached a 12-year-old boy on July 5th and invited sexual contact. The boy was in his yard, in the area of 48 Ave. and 46 St., at 5 p.m. when he saw the man hanging around the area; the man walked past once before approaching him. The man left the area when the boy’s parent approached, and was seen walking south toward Rotary Park. RCMP made immediate patrols in the area but did not locate the suspect. The suspect is described as Caucasian, about 25-years-old. He is 5’8” tall and about 160-180 lbs with a thin build. He had very short blonde hair and no facial hair with a tanned complexion. He was wearing a black muscle shirt and beige shorts and had no visible tattoos. Anyone with information that may assist the police is asked to call Red Deer RCMP at 403-343-5575.

MAN TRIES TO LURE CHILD Red Deer RCMP are searching for a man who at-

tempted to lure a four-yearold boy into his vehicle in Anders on July 3rd. The incident occurred at approximately 5:30 p.m. as the boy was playing in his yard. A male approached the boy, told him he was a taxi driver and offered to take the child to the beach. When the boy went to his mother, the male departed. The suspect is described to be in his late 20s or early 30s. He had darker skin and he had dreadlocks.

The vehicle is described as a white SUV crossover with a black strip on it. It had an unusual roof rack on it. Anyone with information that may assist the police in identifying this suspect is asked to call Red Deer RCMP at 403-343-5575.

ENTERTAINMENT Toronto singer gears up for fall CD release Local fans can check out Sarah Burton’s collection of tunes next week BY MARK WEBER Red Deer Express Singer Sarah Burton represents something of what is so often missing in today’s music scene – a striking originality and the talent to fully back that up. She performs at the International Beer Haus on July 22nd in support of her latest release Make Your Own Bed to be released this September. Burton describes the CD as one she has wanted to make for a long time. And it marks a renewed emphasis on an old love – the piano. “I was playing a show in an old town hall, and there was this beautiful old Steinway grand piano – one of the most beautiful pianos I’ve ever played in my life,” she recalls. She had been searching for the right place to record a new CD, and asked the sound guys if people ever recorded there. Turns out piano tracks were recorded in the charming locale often, so plans were nailed down for her to do the same. “It was a natural choice.” As an adolescent, her piano teacher inspired her love of the piano with the likes of Tori Amos, Vince Guaraldi and others. “She was young, hip and super talented. She was also an awesome entrepreneur and an accountant – a real go-getter. “She also put in the extra effort to find the cool pieces to play. And she let me play show tunes, because I was obsessed with Les Miserables at the time,” she adds with a laugh. Tragically, only a couple years into her lessons, her teacher was killed in an accident, and though Burton tried other teachers, she never found the same connection. So the instrument took kind of a back seat for some years, but Burton eventually rediscovered the piano, letting the passion stir again gradually.

Much of that passion bubbles up consistently throughout Make Your Own Bed, which features compelling indie-pop and rock, while putting the piano in the spotlight. Burton’s vocals have also been described as, “At their best in sync with the keys, and each song pulls out either the soulful or sassy sides of her style.” From the moody, percussive richness of the title track, the catchy, sweet-natured tones of From the Start to the pianodriven simplicity and building momentum of So Long, Burton is truly the consummate artist/ songwriter. Ocean Town reflects more of that intrinsic charm that percolates through so much of her music. Listeners can also truly see something of her personality shining through the spectrum of songs, from the comparatively light-hearted cuts to the deeper, introspective moments. She also revives Treble Charger’s Red, complete with Bill Priddle singing harmony vocals on the track and brings a new grit to Love to Love You which first appeared with a blues-rock touch on her 2012 release. Burton’s career stretches back to her 2007 debut EP Love is for Pussies, recorded with Juno winning producer John Switzer and 2010’s follow up, Mayflower which was accompanied by two videos for singles How Good You Are (2011) and Gravity (2012). In 2012 she also released Fire Breathers, which was also followed up with a video for the single Round Me Up. Born in Ottawa and raised in Oakville, Ontario, Burton calls Toronto home though her career has taken her across Canada, parts of the U.S. and crisscrossing through Europe. But a musician friend urged her to try and sing her tunes herself. It was no easy feat but she did it at an open mic. “I got up and sang my two songs and I was so nervous. But as soon

as I started playing, I went for it. In some ways, I think it was the best performance of my life.” From there, bookings were made and she really found her groove. Connecting with audiences, ultimately, is really the best part of her job. “That’s what makes it worthwhile. “It’s the best job in the world – super fun – and I get to see a lot of places I wouldn’t get to see otherwise. Craving some culture? Head to the Norwegian Laft Hus BY KALISHA MENDONSA Red Deer Express Red Deer has a cultural gem hidden in Heritage Square – the Norwegian Laft Hus, a small log house home to hundreds of traditional artefacts. Founded by Betty Wulff in 1981, the collection encompasses traditional clothing, home furnishings, tapestries, classes, programs and recipes, all stored in a quaint, traditional log house museum. “My passion is that we are open for the public. It’s actually a condition for being on City land, is we have to be open to the public and share our culture with the public, and I think that’s the most important thing,” said Julie Macrae, president of the Norwegian Laft Hus Society. Macrae began volunteering with the Norwegian Laft Hus Society in 1998, and has been with the group ever since. She coordinates classes, public programs, oversees summer students and generally manages the Laft Hus. “People can come in and ask for a tour, our summer students are happy to do that. We’re one of Red Deer’s best kept

secrets and we’re trying to change that,” said Macrae. Upon entering, a visitor will see a beautifully quaint cabin, complete with traditional artwork, tapestries, costumes, tools, trolls and kitchen supplies. There is an interactive centre, many information guides and of course, friendly faces to answer questions about the museum and its contents. Many programs are offered to the public at the museum, including painting, stitching, baking, a paper craft technique called ‘paper quilling’ and Norwegian language classes. “A lot of us ladies meet here and we do crafts for our annual craft and bake sale. We always have a table of ladies doing rosemaling painting, which is a traditional way of painting in Norway. There are different designs, depending on what area you’re from – it’s the same with the bunads – traditional Norwegian costumes,” said Macrae. “We also usually have a table of ladies doing the hardanger embroidery, which is very Norwegian. Once a month, we take turns cooking and learning new

We also do classes with Norwegian language and knitting – all types of different things.” As a registered charity, the Norwegian Laft Hus runs on donations and a few public grants through the City which helps facilitate the summer student program. All others at the museum are volunteers. Only every three years, the Laft Hus Society has access to hold a casino, and needs to stretch those gained resources over another three years. “We sure would like it if people wanted to donate. We’re trying to find more funding, and that’s a big problem for us. Grants are getting fewer and harder to find.” Right now, the Society is looking for corporations, businesses or individual patrons to connect with in order to keep the museum

operational. Artefacts are donated by public members and are always welcome. “One of the dreams of Betty Wulff is to have an international village. There’s still hope for that to happen. If we could find a piece of land, west of town or something where all the different ethnic groups could build their own buildings and share their culture. If that happens, Betty wants another building called a ‘stubur’ which is a Norwegian storage house. We are getting crowded with the small building here, and that would be really nice.” Macrae is hoping to see more people in the museum, either for tours, on Wednesdays for crafts or for other activity nights. The museum is located in Heritage Square, in Recreation Park on 47 Ave. and is a fun family attraction to supplement an afternoon in the downtown park.

Fitness and nutrition is your life support I had an interesting day. I woke up at 7 a.m. or so, because my son was crying in his room down the hall and saying, “Daddy!” I jumped out of bed suddenly and felt and heard a ‘crack’ in my neck and then instantly felt my neck seize up. Ow! I went in to see my son and he was just up for the day and wanted to see me first today instead of the usual mommy. We got things going for the morning routine, but the whole day I was not been able to turn or tilt my head to the left. At our gym, we have a RMT (registered massage therapist) and when I called he came in specially to try and help me out on a Sunday night. He was able to help, but unfortunately I need a chiropractor to put something back, and that would have to wait until Monday morning and then the recovery can begin. To back up a step, my neck has been sore the past few weeks since my brother tried to knock me off a

McDERMOTT big tube while I was being dragged around by his motorboat. Probably a slight case of whiplash my chiropractor figured. Why am I telling you all of this? Look, we aren’t getting any younger. I hit 45 this summer and I am noticing the difference. It takes more work to fend off the bulge around my middle. I have not been consistent this year and it shows. I have been to the eye doctor a few times recently and one set of bifocals later, I can read more easily, although I am admittedly grumpy about it. Riding around on the tube behind a boat was never a big deal,

but this time I got whiplash. I can still race, but I see the chiropractor, physiotherapist and massage way more than when I was young. Maybe you are still in your 20s or 30s and this doesn’t apply to you yet - and that’s cool. Here’s the deal, it’s coming. None of us can escape it - but I will tell you this, we can slow it down. Fitness and eating well works. Period. Yah, but Scott, you did a 40km bike and a killer Spartan workout Saturday and now you are a mess. True, but my neck used to do this every month or so when I was in my mid 20s, fat and out of shape. It has been over 16 years since this has happened, and as much as I am not happy about it, I am also aware that it is my fitness that has kept me away from this all these years. I don’t look at exercise and bootcamp and Spartan racing and triathlons as any-

thing other than what they truly are - life support. Fitness supports my life. My wild, awesome, fantastic, having a blast, moving with ease life. Being fit supports every single aspect of your life, bar none. You feel better, sleep better, have a better ‘night life’, and so much more. Less sick days, more energy, more youthful appearance, clearer mind, etc. I raced the Ultraman World Championships this past fall and the winner, Miro Kregar, crossed the line at age 51. Yah, 51. The guy looks amazing and is fast! Sure, genetics play a part, but look around, interview people that are 10 years older than you. Find five fit people and five non-fit people in your age group plus 10 years. Then go out there this week and have a great time on life support! Can binge drinking result in more than a hangover? And, in summer, never mess around with 300,000,000 volts. Dr. Jurgen Kuschyk, a cardiologist at University Hospital in Mannheim, Germany, reports that anyone over 14 years of age should get a physical checkup before taking a roller coaster ride. This should include an electrocardiogram and, even better, an echocardiogram. Kuschyk’s study involved 57 volunteers ranging from 18 to 79 years of age. Electrocardiograms monitored their heart rhythm before, during and after a ride. Doctors were surprised to find that 44% of participants had irregular rhythms lasting up to five minutes. Most rides generated 4 Gs (gravitational force), super rides 4 to 5 Gs. Fighter pilots pass out when subjected to 6 to 9 Gs! If you’re worried about the economy or continued Middle East unrest and need an alcoholic drink to

relax, remember that moderate drinking is prudent at all times. A report in the British Medical Journal makes alarming reading for those who have a habit of binge drinking. Dr. Mohantha Dooldeniya, a urologist at Pinderfields Hospital in Wakefield, England, reports that three women arrived at the hospital after a bender. They all complained of lower abdominal pain. Doctors initially diagnosed cystitis, a bladder infection. Later, when they used abdominal scans and laparoscopy to peek into the abdomen, they were shocked to find that their urinary bladders had ruptured. How could this happen? Alcohol is a diuretic that causes more frequent urination. But it’s also an anesthetic and dulls the urge to go. This is a bad combination. Often the intoxicated person falls asleep and urinates in bed. But in some cases bladder pressure is so strong and the senses so dulled that the bladder rup-

tures. And if a person falls with a distended bladder, rupture is even more likely. Eggs and the microwave ovens don’t mix. Eggs cooked in a microwave reach a higher temperature than if they were boiled. One nine-year-old girl reheated a previously boiled egg and placed it in a bowl. Thirty minutes later as she was taking it to the dining room, it exploded, eggshells striking her right eye and face. The explosion perforated the cornea of the eye and ruptured the anterior lens capsule. Following the injury she could only see hand movements. Her vision was restored after several operations and the insertion of a plastic lens. “Go brush your teeth before bed,” is a familiar cry from parents. But a report from the Public Health Agency of Canada says the lowly toothbrush can cause a life-threatening injury. A few injuries have occurred while children brushed their teeth.

Each one of them gets a chance to benefit from the Junior Golfer Endowment Foundation and once each year they’re treated to getting up close with some professionals golfers from around North America. The annual Gull Lake Golf Course Pro Am has been a success story in each of the past eight years, raising cash for junior golfers to access for post-secondary education. In fact, the Foundation has already given back more than $50,000 to junior golfers from Gull Lake and with the strength of the program, more is to follow. The credit for how well this event comes off is shared by the organizers, the members of Gull Lake and the professional golfers who keep showing up each year to share their knowledge of the game with

the kids. This year eleven pros are making the trip to the tricky little par three course, including American golfer Sandra Palmer who brings with her an impressive resume, notching 21 wins on the LPGA tour including a win at the U.S Open. “For the young kids in our program, to see a lady of her stature and what she’s done will be pretty special,” said Eamon McCann, Gulls Lake’s operator. “To think she is a Hall of Famer, was a leading money winner. Minor football camp focuses on drills and skills BY JIM CLAGGETT Red Deer Express There will be a new look for the youngest members of Red Deer Minor Football this season. The successful Atom program will be sporting brand new uniforms this year according to president Greg Thompson. “We decided we needed to upgrade the jerseys and get them more in line based on what everybody else is using,” he said. “It was kind of a piece meal thing put together back in the day and we had a little bit of extra money and sponsorship from a donor which allowed us to get the jerseys

going.” The players will be wearing the colours of two pro teams, the Cincinnati Bengals and Green Bay Packers as well as a pair of college teams, the Florida Gators and the USC Trojans. Back in June the association held a camp at Great Chief Park and about 75 players aged five to 12 turned out to get some instruction on the finer points of the game. “We left the equipment out of the camp this year just to focus more on the drills and skills as well as the minor details of

football and not have them worry about a helmet or a pair of shoulder pads,” said Thompson. It was the first time in three years a spring camp was run and this year there was a twist to the event with local high school players and a few university players running the show. “I think it was a little bit of an eye opener for them to take a step back and understand what coaching really is and how much time and effort really gets put into it,” said Thompson. “We met for 15 minutes each night before each session and gave them a layout of what I wanted and let them decide based

on their 10 years of playing.” The interest in the camp was a sign that the program is on solid footing as it moves forward. “It shows that football is growing and you’re seeing it at multiple levels, all the way through.” With such future promise Thompson is confident he can fill the rosters of the two Peewee teams and all four Atom teams. “I’d really like to push the number base to get that third peewee team going this year,” he said. “But I think we’re going to wait another year before we get a third team going though.” editor@reddeerexpress.com

There are plenty of little stories surrounding his migration from sunny Miami to cold, blustery Cleveland where they have not won any sort of championship in major sports since the 1964 Browns took the NFL crown. Along with some serious talent King James brings with him some hope for a city which has the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and winter. I would suggest ticket prices might also be somewhat lofty but that’s another story. Many of those fans who will buy those tickets are

now digging around to find the James jersey they hid away four years ago. There are those who are digging into their wallets to buy a new James jersey because the old one caught fire somehow. The Cavs marketing department is drafting up a thank you letter to LeBron as we speak. No matter how this plays out though, the fans of Cleveland should bury the hatchet with James, right next to where they buried his old jersey no matter what you might think of the man. Incorporating unique beauty into any room As I furiously struggled this week to find something creative and inspiring to write about, I asked my friends via facebook for ideas and questions.

MECKLER The responses were fun and varied and I laughed out loud when my niece suggested that I write about how to incorporate cat trees into design! My response was no way but the suggestion was hilarious. Over the many years I have been designing I have seen so many inspiring and wonderful spaces, how I wish for the ease of social media to collect the visuals that I have gathered. There are many parts that

make up an impressive home or office and I thought I would share a few of my favorites with you. The initial way to make an impression for your home or office is with your front door. Consider the face of your property and spend a little extra time and money making it supercharged. Larger front doors, window and wrought iron detail are all so welcoming and beautiful. This says ‘please come in’ and welcomes everyone to your home. If budget restricts you then a fun paint colour is a reasonably priced option. The condo I used to own sent out a memo to all residents that the exterior doors needed to be painted and gave us a palette of colours to choose from. As each door was painted the entire complex took on a more vibrant feel, it was a treat to see each door receive its own special personality.

Unusual spaces such as alcoves, unexpected corridors and niches in rooms will give amazing personality to any room. It’s even better if you can boost the style factor with tile, wallpaper or a paint finish. One of our designers loves to tile and put mosaic marble tiles in her home’s alcoves. It was a whimsical touch that enhanced these small recessed drywall spaces. Ceiling beams, large baseboards and window sashes are all wonderful and relatively easy ways to add visual charm to your home. A plain square room that receives a custom bookcase or additional trim pieces will transform into an interesting and unique space. Windows are the essential part of your home that let light and air into a room. They can also incorporate the beautiful outside world which can be used in decorating your home. Think outside the box when it comes to windows, if you need

more wall space consider putting in long thin horizontal windows high up on a wall to allow for a sofa underneath. Look at the exterior view and work from the outside in as you make the most of the best view. My bathroom window is tiny and has a privacy film on it, to my delight in the evening the light shining through illuminates the tree outside which looks like a zen screen! This wasn’t planned but I truly love this little piece of art brought to me by nature. Big or small, expensive or entry level you can incorporate unique beauty into any room in your home with a few specialized items. Make sure every room in your home has that ‘it’ feature that will catch your attention and ignite your creativity – or at least just makes you smile. Dealing with home ownership when a marriage ends So the reality of the world is that a large number of marriages end up in divorce.

PIKKERT This is a hard enough time in anyone’s life so the lenders and the mortgage insurers have come up with a product that can help. It is the ability to refinance your matrimonial home up to 95% of its value to payout your ex their portion of the equity and perhaps even some of the debts you incurred together. This is a specialty product and there are certain things you must do. Let’s take a look shall we? Step 1. You must complete a legal separation agreement through a lawyer. Even if it is the most amicable split in the history of mankind, this has to be done. The reason for this is you want your rights protected fully. If you are the one staying in the house, you want to make sure that your ex has legally and irrevocably given up their rights to the home. If you are the one leaving, you want to make sure that your name is removed from the title so there is no question of you having

any further obligation where it is concerned. There will be a cost associated with the legal separation agreement. How much? I would not dare to say but I would budget a bare minimum of $2,500. It is also important to keep in mind that legal matters often take more time than anticipated so don’t imagine you will be able to get this completed in a hurry. Make sure that you address any debts taken on during the marriage. These can be paid out from the proceeds of the new mortgage but only if they are listed. Step 2. Order an appraisal. This has two reasons. The first is that you and your ex will be able to determine the true value of the home through an impartial third party. The second is that most lenders require it in this situation. Step 3. Write up an offer to purchase. This one always catches people off guard. Why should you have to write up an offer to purchase on a property you already own? The answer is just this. The lenders require it. This legally binding document shows the agreed upon price and the final closing date to which both parties have agreed. This can be completed through your lawyer, with the help of a

willing real estate professional or on your own with a form available online. Step 4. Get a mortgage. You have likely been in contact with your mortgage professional before now but if not, then now is the time. You are going to have to provide a separation agreement, appraisal, offer to purchase, a letter of employment and pay stub, last two years notice of assessments or T4s and any other re-

quired documentation. It is very important to note that you will incur new mortgage insurance premiums if you go right to 95% of the home’s value even if you had already done so on the same property. This is a brand new application with you as the sole borrower so a full new premium applies. This is how it could look. Home value ($300,000) with 5% equity ($15,000).

A new mortgage for $285,000 with an insurance premium of $8,977.50. The total loan is $293,977.50. So that, my mortgage minions, is a product which can help you through a very challenging time.
