Getting ready for the salmon run

Grant funding The Village of Burns Lake and the Regional District of BulkleyNechako (RDBN) have received a portion of grant funding from the provincial government. The grant funding is part of the provincial government’s Strategic Community Investment Fund.

Lake Babine Nation prepares to head out to salmon fish for the first time in two years

Wildfire updates The wildfire that is burning approximately seven kilometres south of the Chelaslie River has burned nearly 5000 hectares. The fire, discovered July 8, is burning directly North of the Entiako provincial park and protected area near Tweedsmuir Park.

Steven Maisey A large predicted salmon return this year has Lake Babine Nation gearing up for their fishing season for the first time since 2012. The Department of Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO), the lead agency for salmon management in B.C., have predicted a large return for a handful of the Fraser Rivers’ 44 sockeye salmon population. Most of the sockeye salmon returning to the Fraser River this year are the progeny of those that spawned in 2010, which was the largest salmon return in 100 years. “We are gearing up for harvesting salmon for commercial sales right now, along with fishing salmon for personal use,” Wilf Adam, Chief of Lake Babine Nation said. Lake Babine Nation made an internal decision last year to not commercially harvest the salmon due to the low population. Summer festival kickoff The fifth annual Grassy Plains Summer Festival is set to begin this Friday with a ‘kickoff’ dance Friday night at the Grassy Plains Community Hall. The festival, is an annual fundraising event.
