Kim Jordison did not go to work that spring day expecting to have a stroke − especially not at the age of 34. While in her office six years ago, Jordison felt nauseous and had lost control of the left side of her body, causing that side of her face to droop noticeably. She also experienced a severe headache. “I’ve never felt pain like that before,” said Jordison. However, she continued with the rest of her work day instead of going straight to the hospital. “I don’t know if I didn’t know what was happening, or I just didn’t want to really accept what was happening, if I was in denial of it,” said Jordison. Later that evening in the hospital emergency room, doctors thought Jordison might either have Bell’s palsy or meningitis, but not a stroke, despite her family history. “When I look back on my Dad’s side, everyone that has passed away has passed away because of heart problems,” said Jordison. Both Jordison’s mother and father died of heart attacks. Her father was 49, and her mother was 61. “Nobody wanted to think this could be a stroke because of my age,” said Jordison. “I just knew from my family history that this was probably what was happening to me.” PleAse see: A stroke can strike at any age, Page A23

Former home of roundabout safer now Intersections, those places where two and sometimes more streets converge, are key points that often make Greater Victoria roadways unique or iconic. Perhaps the best-known is the meeting point of Douglas and Government streets, along with Gorge and Hillside roads at an intersection some oldtimers still refer to as “the roundabout.” The nickname refers to the large, circular structure that guided traffic onto the four streets between around 1949 and 1963, when traffic lights were installed. As traffic increased along the various routes – streetcars were removed in 1948, to be replaced by buses – the intersection became more congested.

The intersection of Douglas and Government streets, Gorge Road and Hillside Avenue makes for an interesting collection and routing of vehicle traffic. Historian John Adams tells a 1950s-era story of a woman walking home from work who somehow got caught in the vehicle jam-up. “The traffic was apparently horrendous and her new coat became caught on the bumper of a car that was inching its way into the roundabout,” he says. “She was walking along and tugging her

coat and when it looked as if the car was going to leave (the roundabout), she ripped her coat to get free.” While those streets have long been known for handling a large volume of business and commuter traffic, the intersection of Fairfield Road and Moss Street – a former “fivecorner” meeting place itself – became, like many,

the hub of a residential neighbourhood. While the two streets cross in a fairly traditional style today, with Sir James Douglas elementary on one corner and Fairfield United Church on another, many years back the eastern end of Oscar Street once opened into the busy intersection, creating a serious need to make

eye contact with fellow drivers. In nearby Rockland lie two of the city’s most unique streets, Lotbiniere Avenue and Robleda Crescent. Both short roadways once wound their way down from Rockland Avenue to Richardson Street, almost like San Francisco’s Lombard Street, but were closed to through traffic years ago. Ring Road in Saanich is a perfectly circular two-lane roadway that encompasses much of the University of Victoria. Having once contained the campus, it now dissects, rather than capturing it, due to subsequent development by the university. Uniqueness can also include name changes. Dallas Road, for example, runs into Hollywood Crescent at its eastern end, and if one sticks to the main drag, becomes Robertson Street, Crescent Road, King George Terrace and Beach Drive, respectively. Whether we use them during our regular commute or for occasional forays elsewhere, area streets and intersections are part of the history and growth of our communities. ••• Don Descoteau is a Black Press editor.

A Fairfield home is likely the first in Victoria to install a driveway that lets water run straight through it, an innovative approach that saves the homeowner cash and lessens the load on city pipes. Ron Manuel decided to install pervious concrete after learning about the City of Victoria’s pending stormwater utility. In January 2015, Manuel will become one of a few Victoria homeowners eligible for up to a 40 per cent discount under new bylaws that reward locals for keeping their rainwater on their property. “I think it’s great,” he said, hosing the driveway to demonstrate the lack of run-off water. “This can take gallons of water a minute, and it just runs straight through.” For all residential homeowners, the city will soon begin calculating the utility charge from the hard area footprint, or roof coverage, of each home. Driveway footprints will be averaged at three per cent of the roof’s footprint, while annual discounts will be available for homes that have rain gardens, cisterns,

green roofs or permeable surfaces like Manuel’s driveway. “It’s about 15 per cent more expensive than normal concrete, but it’s worth it,” he said. Pervious paving includes everything from porous concrete to “grass-crete,” or concrete stones that allow grass to grow between them, said Ed Robertson, assistant director of public works. “Pervious concrete should be able to handle the water that lands on it and penetrate

the soil underneath,” he said. “Parking and driveways are bad areas for oil and other run-off, so keeping that out of our stormwater system and the ocean is key.” Russ Barry, whose team from Interactive Construction installed the driveway last month, said homeowners in Vancouver and elsewhere are embracing pervious concrete and green building ideas, which have come down in cost in the past decade. “There’s no slurry to

the concrete mix,” said Barry, who had to test the material multiple times offsite before getting it right. “What we’re effectively doing is gluing the mixture together and it creates air space. You see the voids with the naked eye.” Barry said other contractors and municipal engineers have shown early interest in the product, and he expects more homeowners will see its benefit once the stormwater utility kicks in next year. dpalmer@vicnews.com

Though the Economic Development Strategy will likely change before being implemented, one of the major themes it covers is making the township more green. “I think that [Esquimalt] already has good, green values,” Desjardins said, “and we’re implementing them as we can – but we want to do more and we want to do better. As an old community, you have to do what you can to build up the infrastructure, but you have to be realistic.” Plans on how to make Esquimalt greener include tax incentives and an award/recognition program to attract green businesses and streamlining the approval process for green building renovations. Another area of focus is the E&N Rail Trail. Desjardins said that the trail provides unique opportunity for tourism, as it travels through Esquimalt and connects it to Victoria. Potential plans include a pub on the trail, a trackside art gallery and food trucks. “The E&N Trail needs to be brought up to a better profile,” Desjardins said. “It’s a great opportunity to nab cyclists and get them to stop and check out our businesses and tourist attractions.” Council also plans to tackle the negative perceptions of Esquimalt, and hopes that attracting young families will be the key to a new image. As well as promoting lower costs of living, several youth-based programs were listed, including a career mentorship program for students, and improving transit routes to nearby campuses. “Esquimalt’s image is already morphing,” said Desjardins. “Everybody here knows it, but we need to make sure that people outside come here and experience it for themselves.”

Victoria resident Barb McVagh has been donating to the United Way for more than 45 years.

Victoria United Way fetes longtime donors Donating and volunteering for any length of time is laudable. But how about donating to your favourite charity for nearly five decades, and for good measure, volunteering another 30 years? Victoria resident Barb McVagh has done just that, and on Wednesday was celebrated by the United of Greater Victoria at a Red Feather tea at Government House along with 475 other donors for more than 25 years of dedication to the movement. “United Way is my social conscience,” says McVagh. “They can do for my community what I cannot, and so I give.” Serving the insurance industry for the length of her career, McVagh was influenced by an employer who believed in United Way. She learned the fine art of perpetual giving, embracing the ideal of giving back over the long term. In addition to her years of generosity, McVagh also volunteered for more than 30 years with United Way’s leaders committee. “Barb McVagh is a dedicated patron who shares our vision to improve life for thousands of local citizens,” says Patricia Jelinski, CEO of United Way. “She has taught us so much in giving wisely of her time, her knowledge, and with consistent generosity which enriches our community greatly. All our Red Feather donors represent the foundation of our community, uniting for change to build a stronger, more inclusive and caring community.” Her years with the leaders committee brought her an even deeper understanding of United Way and

A few rules for summer fun

Summer burst into its full glory this week in Victoria. Time to fire up the barbecue, head to the beach and enjoy the sun. However, without becoming a total buzz kill, here are a couple of points that seem to need repeating every year. First: Be careful out there. Our regional beaches and lakes are inviting on hot summer days as they are potentially deadly. Under tow, large waves and underwater snags, hot sun, can turn fun at the beach into a tragedy. And keep it alcohol free. Water and alcohol simply do not mix. Not only is it unsafe, it’s illegal. The summer sun is great, but remember it can also can be a killer. Don’t leave your pet in a vehicle for any reason, for any length of time. An open window and a bowl of water won’t help an animal trapped in a hot car. Remember, too, that the sun we miss so much during the winter rains packs a wicked punch. Recent reports indicate that instances of skin cancer remain high, despite years of warnings. So if you’re going outside, even if the clouds creep in, wear some sunscreen. Second: Be respectful. The simple rule – pack it in, pack it out – seems lost on far too many people. Enjoy that early morning coffee by the lake, but don’t leave the empty cup on the bench for someone else to dispose of. Gathering up all the garbage and leaving it in a green garbage bag by the roadside is a nice thought. And speaking of which: if it’s your dog, what’s left behind is your responsibility. Greater Victoria has some spectacular parks and walking trails; they’re not made better studded by dog feces. Victoria is a great place to be in the summertime. A couple of simple rules can make it even better.

Teachers’ work never ending I agree with Catherine Robillard of Victoria as she writes about the gargantuan amount of work teachers do that many, including the writer of the offensive editorial to which she was replying, simply do not see or understand. I am a typical humanities teacher who spends every evening and at least one day each weekend marking and preparing classes, after full days of working with students, contacting parents, coaching responsibilities, leading a school club and fundraising for the next student trip. There’s no down time. That’s what I use summer holidays for: a chance to recoup, revive and continue personal educational opportunities to enrich my class the following year. Without that, I don’t think I could keep it up (for those who enviously look upon teachers’ summer holidays). Class size and composition is crucial to my ability to give my best to all students. Sometimes, teachers end up with extremely challenging classes. I recall earlier in my career when in two of my Socials 8 classes I had 21 of 51 students with IEP’s (Individualized Education Plans). The following year, seven additional students received designations. I did not have a single educational assistant to help me.

Those students who could have most benefited from field trips and other organized activities requiring intensive preparation were unable to experience this as I could not rely on good behaviour from the students in question, nor did I have the energy after all the creative classroom management I’d had to employ. In Grade 12 these students agreed with my decision not to offer them field trips in the junior grades and apologized to me for their own behaviour and the behaviour of their classmates. Maturity worked wonders. However, assistance in the class room, and class composition requirements would have ensured thriving through the middle and high school years, rather than merely surviving. Victoria must stop with the tax freebies Re: Taxing time for politicians (Our View, July 2) While a tax increase may have been held to a “mere 2.5 per cent” in the City of Victoria, the issue depends on what lofty heights taxes were in the first place. The fact is, they could be a lot lower.

How do taxpayers feel about the City of Victoria giving away millions in freebies every year? Under provincial law the B.C. legislature, Government House and other properties are exempt from paying property taxes. In 2013 that was about $1.5 million, according to City of Victoria figures. There are also provincially owned park spaces and water lots that are exempt totaling $500,000 annually. The clincher: we are the only provincial capital, next to St. John’s, Nfld., where the province does not provide grants in lieu to offset the loss of property taxes. With the burden set to increase in 2014 with subsequent tax increases, the loss will only get worse. Even the federal government has long recognized the need to compensate local municipalities for federal and Crown corporation offices, national parks and other buildings within their jurisdictions. A few weeks before the landmark decision declaring aboriginal title proven by the Tsilhqot’in Nation, I picked up a used university textbook that looked like a handy reference. Geography in British Columbia: People and Landscapes in Transition, by Brett McGillivray (UBC Press, Second Edition) is a good reference, except where it strays from geography into politics. This 2005 edition came out not long before the B.C. Treaty Commission started producing agreements, notably with the Tsawwassen First Nation. It recounts the establishment of the Ministry of Native Affairs by the Bill Vander Zalm government in 1990, and the election the next year of Mike Harcourt’s NDP, who reversed the province’s historical legal position and tried to accept the existence of aboriginal title. At this point the textbook departs from the facts and leads its freshman pupils into left-wing dogma. McGillivray writes: “When the Liberal Party won the 2001 election (with all but two seats), it launched a provincewide referendum on treaty negotiations, prompting commentators to suggest the government was ‘trying to impose 19th century ideas on a 21st century problem’.” “Commentators” in the above quote is of course only one commentator, veteran lefty Vancouver columnist Stephen Hume. Trades can offer a rewarding and fulfilling career path with a higher than average wage level and a solid future. The trades sector in B.C. is expected to face an overall labour shortage by 2016 that will deepen in the following years, according to WorkBC Trades Occupations Outlook (2010-2020) report (workbc.ca). A goal of this video competition is to encourage more B.C. students to simply consider a trade as a rewarding

career alternative and entice more teachers and high schools to include trades as a career option in the classroom. In the auto service industry, the highly regarded Ford ASSET technician training program is a good example. Locally, apprentices spend four months at BCIT and four months in a B.C. Ford dealership (mainly in the service sector) on a rotational basis. They can also choose to specialize in a specific area, such as auto electronics, and get additional upgrade certification courses through Ford training. Most apprentice programs are four years and on-the-job training is ongoing, especially in the auto industry. Changes in new technology are rapidly transforming trades, as well as other occupations. Looking even further ahead, our growing and evolving job market will require skilled, capable people who can adapt to new challenges and new technologies. A hands-on ability, whatever the skill, is a talent that tends to go unrecognized and too often, it is under-appreciated, even by those who possess the talent. That’s why I was delighted to be asked again to participate as a judge (one of five) in the annual “Show Us Your Skills” competition organized by Discover Skills BC for high school students. Students create a short video about a trade or skill that they are interested in pursuing. Prizes for the top three videos are presented to both the student and the high school that they attend. The high level of expertise that some of these kids already possess was remarkable and the video entries this year were outstanding. First prize this year went to Connor Shaw, a student at Traditional Learning Academy in Nanaimo. He was taught to weld by his uncle and at age twelve he fabricated a flat deck for a truck he was given. More recently he added a hydraulic lift system that gives the flat deck a dump feature. When it comes to water safety, summer is the most dangerous time of the year. More than 500 Canadians drown every year, many of them children and teenage males. Bruce Andrew, Victoria-based manager of community development for the Canadian Red Cross, said that number is high, especially when many of the fatalities are preventable. “Children can drown in inches of water. That is one of the dangers they don’t understand that can happen,” he said. “It only takes one mistake and it could be your last mistake. People aren’t taking the risk around water seriously enough.” A recent report by the Canadian Red Cross documenting 20 years of data between 1991 and 2010 showed 20 per cent of drowning fatalities are children between age one and four unexpectedly falling around water. With children, Andrew said, the key to water

can take that ability away. “In cold water, it doesn’t matter how good a swimmer you are, hypothermia sets in in four to five minutes and you don’t have the ability to swim. The water can be a dangerous place,” he said. “It is a fine line. Water is such a unique environment. You can have so much fun in water and you don’t want to discourage (the public) from using that, but they need to understand when they need to be safe and understand the dangers there.” He encourages people to go out on the water and enjoy themselves. At the same time, he advises to be especially careful of fun and sun masking potentially dangerous situations. Those can include accidental slips or falls, an issue exacerbated by water making surfaces more slippery than normal. “There are so many preventable drownings,” he said. “You have to treat the water with respect, because it can be a dangerous situation.”

Inspiring children and teens to do something more to preserve the environment and act on their outdoor passion is what FUN camps are all about. FUN, a well-crafted acronym for Friends Uniting for Nature, has been offering environmental summer day camps for young people aged six to 16 since 2008 in Victoria and Vancouver. The success of the non-profit society’s camps led them this year to expand to the West Shore, on a Colwood site that has a rich history of connecting kids with the outdoors. Coast Collective on Heatherbell Road, now a central part of the arts community on the West Shore, has partnered with FUN to offer a pristine location where campers can learn about their surroundings and experience activities

that have little to do with electronics. “We’re definitely not your average summer camp at all,” says Maia Green, executive director and founder of the Friends Uniting for Nature Society. “Kids are inspired to take action. The camp is focused on environmental leadership.” Summer camps ran at the Havenwood estate, anchored by the historic Pendray House which now houses the Coast Collective’s gallery and programs, between 1977 and 2001. Shannon Carmen, a Metchosin resident who now works with Coast Collective, remembers fondly the summer days she spent at the former Pacific Centre for Family Services day camp between 1994 and 2000. “We learned to sail and canoe on Esquimalt Lagoon,” she says. “You were doing archery and tree climbing – that was something you did for an hour.” Being around the area she played in as a child and teen allows her to relive a part of those experiences every day.

“When I think of it, and working at Coast Collective now, there was something that was so magical about that place.” Carmen, now 32, likes the idea that children are now back and learning valuable lessons while playing. “We weren’t talking about saving the environment, we just absorbed it by osmosis,” she says. As part of the summer programs, which see all ages engage in activities together, campers are encouraged to follow their heart and create their own “passion project.” “It gets them thinking about what do they really love and what would they like to do to make the world better,” Green says. Past projects have ranged from a boy designing a book sharing program for his school to a girl creating a fundraiser project for wolf conservation. One Grade 5 student at Crystal View elementary in Langford planned out and started an Eco Club at her school. “Right away they had over

30 kids coming to every meeting,” Green says. “They did art projects on their favourite animals, made bird feeders, used outdoors as a learning place. The nice part is the school has committed to keep it going.” At a summer’s end gala, campers particularly excited about their projects can pitch them to a panel of judges, with the potential to win a FUN Champs Social Change Award. Winners receive seed money to follow up on their dream and are assigned a mentor for a year. Last year, 10 Champs were funded in each of Victoria and Vancouver. FUN also prides itself on the fact its day camps are accessible to low-income, disadvantaged and at-risk children and youth through their scholarship program, which enables one third of all campers to attend free of charge. After many tests, doctors discovered Jordison had had a mini-stroke, or a transient ischemic attack. According to Patrice Lindsay, director of best practices and performance at the Heart Kim Jordison and Stroke Foundation, the biggest challenge is getting people to take the risks of stroke seriously. “Younger people especially

don’t think stroke’s their issue,” she said, adding that stroke can happen at any age, and more strokes are happening at a younger age now. Factors such as high blood pressure, diabetes and obesity are playing a part in that, said Lindsay. “We know that maintaining a healthy blood pressure literally will obliterate half the strokes that happen.” When Lindsay was 38, she was rocking her two-year old child to sleep when she suddenly dropped to the floor and went completely paralyzed on one side of her body. She managed to get the attention of her husband by banging on the floor with one hand, but was

unable to speak clearly. Being a critical care nurse by training, Lindsay, now 50, knew she was having a stroke. But even she did not see it coming. “I was a hard-working, healthy person,” said Lindsay. “Like all other people my age, it was nowhere on my radar.” The classic signs of stroke are sudden onset weakness on one side of the body, trouble speaking, vision problems, headache and dizziness. However, not everyone experiences the same symptoms, and the level of severity differs per person also, said Lindsay. Since her stroke, Jordison has learned to enjoy every day, and

has made more of an effort to live healthier. “When you have this kind of situation happen to you, you realize that every day is a gift and that the little things don’t always need to matter in life,” she said. After her mother’s death, Jordison and her family created a bucket list for every season of activities they can do together. Some are as simple as going for a picnic or going swimming with the whole family, and others are quirkier, such as milking a cow. “Life is so busy, and there’s so many things that you want to do that even just simple things are sometimes hard to fit in,” said Jordison.

If someone is experiencing symptoms of a stroke, Lindsay advises calling 911 immediately rather than getting to the hospital some other way. “[Otherwise] you catch the hospital by surprise, and you may not get to the right hospital,” said Lindsay. “Not every hospital is equipped to handle a stroke emergency.” According to the Heart and Stroke Foundation’s 2014 Stroke Report, there are approximately 50,000 strokes in Canada every year, or one every 10 minutes, and a growing number of strokes are occurring among people aged 30 to 50. editor@vicnews.com

While waterfront homes may carry a certain level of prestige, Victoria and Esquimalt offer a number of options for those who are looking to settle down by the sea but may not have the means to do so elsewhere. In Esquimalt’s Saxe Point Park area, in particular, it isn’t uncommon to find a home on the ocean for under $1 million. Saxe Point and other neighbourhoods in Esquimalt continue to be “reasonable,” according to Soethby’s realtor Scott Piercey, when compared to similar properties found in Vancouver or Seattle. According to the Victoria Real Estate Board, the average cost of waterfront homes have gone down this year from $1.22 million to $1.11 million, a nine per cent drop. However, communications manager Denise Hogue warns that when it comes to waterfront property, the numbers can be misleading—a single luxury home selling for $17 million can skew the numbers. Sales have also been on the rise this year, with 99 being sold in 2014 as of July 1, compared to last year’s 84,

According to Beswick of, homes with a foreshore lease aren’t easy to come by in Victoria. “Docks definitely factor into the price of a home, but it’s hard to put an exact number on it,” Beswick said. “The type of dock makes a difference too—whether or not it’s sheltered, what type of boat you can dock or if it’s just for launching

Loyalists celebrate 100th anniversary The United Empire Loyalists’ Association of Canada will honour its 100th anniversary with the unveiling of a new commemorative stone in the Mayor’s Grove at Beacon Hill Park on July 22. The stone was first laid when King George VI and Queen Elizabeth visited Victoria in 1939 – the first reigning monarchs to do so. While here, the

royal couple also planted a tree. Over the years, the stone has deteriorated, so the Loyalists association thought its 100th anniversary would be the perfect time for a new stone, said spokesman Frans Compeer. Lt.-Gov. Judith Guichon will unveil the stone at 2 p.m., followed by cake and refreshments.

Furthermore, it’s paired to a 6-speed transmission. Normally, stop-go traffic on a Harley would be a pain. However, it wasn’t with the 750. It’s the easiest and lightest clutch I’ve worked

with on any of the American motorcycle manufacturer’s bikes. Speaking of low seat height, it measures in at 709mm (27.9-inches.) The Harley 750 doesn’t carry some of the bulk people might associate with the brand. It’s like losing all the weight you put on during the Christmas holiday! It just feels good. When it comes to the

750’s suspension, it’s not jarring and pleasantly soft. Not so soft, that it puts you to sleep, but a good balance of urban comfort mixed with open road riding pleasure. Up front, the 37mm telescopic forks and rear twin tubular externally mounted shocks absorb the bumps in the road and leave the rider feeling fine. However, after a day of logging over 200 kilometres, the rear end does

feel a little sleepy! General ergonomics are good, though I would have brought the handlebars a little closer to my body. They’re not a stretch for me, but something that would have made the ride more comfortable. I also would have liked a little more “grab” in the front and rear brakes. It seemed like I really had to bite hard into the front brake to get it to slow down. The logic behind that is that new riders are less likely to get in trouble in an event where they are nervous and get a little jumpy. Lastly, fit and finish of the bike could have been neater. Wires were exposed, and it took away from the overall aesthetic. That said the bike does have character to it. The 2015 Street 750 from Harley-Davidson has many good things going for it. And with it tipping the scale at just 222 kg (489 lbs.) – in running order – looks like Christmas comes early. Pricing will be announced closer to the release date. it is under-appreciated, even by those who possess the talent. That’s why I was delighted to be asked again to participate as a judge (one

of five) in the annual “Show Us Your Skills” competition organized by Discover Skills BC for high school students. Students create a short video about a trade or skill

that they are interested in pursuing. Prizes for the top three videos are presented to both the student and the high school that they attend.

The high level of expertise that some of these kids already possess was remarkable and the video entries this year were outstanding. First prize this year went to Connor Shaw, a student at Traditional Learning Academy in Nanaimo, on Vancouver Island. He was taught to weld by his uncle and at age twelve he fabricated a flat deck for a truck he was given. More recently he added a hydraulic lift system that gives the flat deck a dump feature. Connor loves welding and plans to pursue a career in a related trade. Connor will get an Apple MacBook Air and his high school will receive $2,000. The second prize winner was Albert Leung, who attends Steveston-London Secondary in Richmond. Albert will get an Apple iPad Air 16GB and the school will receive $1,000. Bernice Chung, a student at Eric Hamber Secondary, in Vancouver, came third, she will receive an Apple iPad Mini, and $500 goes to the school.
