Search and Rescue have been trying to locate Kimberley resident Alex Brown after he jumped in the St. Mary’s River recently.

Kimberley RCMP are currently trying to locate Alex Brown after he jumped into the St. Mary’s River on Saturday, July 5 shortly after 7 p.m.

Police were notified by a friend who observed Alex jump into the St Mary’s River approximately 15 km upstream from Marysville near Kimberley. Alex surfaced after jumping in, but then disappeared

from sight.

Search and Rescue teams began searching the river Saturday night, they continued through Sunday with teams from Kimberley, Cranbrook, Fernie, Sparwood, Columbia Valley and Nelson. Over 35 volunteers have been involved in the search.

A helicopter was utilized both Saturday and Sunday, on Monday an aircraft with two spotters flew the river from Koocanusa to St Mary’s Lake.

Additional swift waster search teams from other areas are being brought in to assist and will resume the river search Monday afternoon.

Alex is 5’5’’, 130 pounds with shoulder length blonde hair and moustache. He was wearing brown shorts at the time.

Fund gives to local cities Submitted

Cranbrook, Elkford, Fernie, Sparwood and the East Kootenay Regional District are receiving more than one million dollars from the Strategic Community Investment Fund to invest in local policing and community safety, services and projects, MLA Bill Bennett has announced.

It is part of almost $74 million being invested through the Fund into communities across B.C. this year. Local communities have discretion and flexibility to use this unconditional funding to meet their needs in various ways including more policing, new equipment, increased community safety initiatives, infrastructure, administration and service delivery priorities.

“The Strategic Community Investment Fund grants allow local governments to focus on the public safety projects that are most important to them,” said Bennett, MLA for Kootenay East. “I am glad to see communities in the East Kootenay region receiving these grants.”

Communities receiving funding: Traffic Fine Funding: $163,156 – Cranbrook Small Community Grants: $114,399 – Cranbrook $258,821 – Elkford $304,694 – Fernie $289,322 – Sparwood Regional District Grant: $112,504 – East Kootenay The Strategic Community Investment Fund includes the Traffic Fine Revenue Sharing Program, Small Community Grant and Regional District Grant Programs. Small Community Grants apply to communities with less than 20,000 and are used for infrastructure, to ensure stable administration and service delivery priorities.

SunMine project begins in Kimberley Submitted The City of Kimberley’s future is bright as it announces the start of construction on the $5.3 million SunMine solar project.

SunMine will have over 4,000 solar-cell modules, mounted on 96 solar trackers which follow the sun’s movement, maximizing solar exposure. It will be western Canada’s largest scale solar project, and the first solar project in B.C. to sell power to the BC Hydro grid.

The project is being supported by Teck, whose involvement, first announced in 2011, includes providing land and site infrastructure as well as a $2 million contribution towards the project. SunMine is located on Teck’s former Sullivan Mine site, which has been fully reclaimed.

The Province’s Innovative Clean Energy (ICE) Fund program will provide $1 million for SunMine through the EcoSmart Foundation, a Vancouver based nonprofit foundation promoting economically and ecologically smart projects between public and private sectors.

EcoSmart has been a driving force that helped incubate the project from concept to reality. The SunMine project also acknowledges the support of Columbia Basin Trust, which supports efforts to deliver social, economic and environmental benefits to the residents in the Columbia Basin. Additional funding and assistance has been received from the Southern Interior Development Initiative Trust.

SunMine is community owned, distinct and well suited to capitalize on Kimberley’s clear and sunny conditions.

A 2011 referendum saw an overwhelming majority of Kimberley voters support the City borrowing $2 million toward construction of SunMine. As a result, the City and its partners allocated three years to securing funding, negotiating ownership, undertaking due diligence and prefeasibility studies, and completing 17 agreements with eight different organizations.

1. Planning Ahead. After another cool, moist spring, the first hot days of summer can come as quite a shock to our system. Over the next few weeks, water will be a hot commodity in our yards and gardens and many people are looking for plants that are more drought tolerant and are experimenting with principles of xeriscaping - a form of gardening that reduces the need for watering.

2. Waiting Game. A common mistake people make is thinking that plants are drought tolerant when they buy them or when they are first planted. In fact, no plants are drought tolerant until they are established, which can take from one to two years, depending on the particular plant.

3. Organic Matters. Building up the organic matter in your soil can increase the ground’s ability to retain water. To help plants develop a strong root system, it is a good idea to amend your soil with some good compost or top soil and to add some bone meal when planting.

4. What’s under the Soil? Root systems can affect drought tolerance. Perennials with large, fleshy, fibrous roots or deep tap roots are able to reach deep down into the soil to collect water and also store moisture for future use. Some of these favorites include peonies, rudbeckia, echinacea, gaillardia, Russian sage and salvia.

5. The Silver Lining. Some drought resistant plant varieties have silver or grey foliage, due to a coating of fine hairs on the surface of their leaves. These hairs reflect light and heat, and provide shade, thus reducing the amount of moisture lost. Some examples of these are artemisia, silver mound, silver brocade and silver sage. Furry leaves, such as lamb's ear, are also designed to keep plants cool and retain moisture.

6. Bigger isn’t always Better. Many plants that have adapted to dry conditions have small or narrow leaves, in order to minimize the amount of exposed leaf surface. Thick leaves are another common adaptation. Fleshy, succulent plants, such as sedum, are popular choices for dry locations.

7. Make Room for Locals. If you choose native plants or plants that are related to native plants, such as yarrow, potentilla or Oregon grape, you may also find they have increased tolerance to hot, dry conditions. These plants adapt well to our local climate and besides generally using less water, they are often also more deer, disease and pest resistant.

8. Not all Grasses are Created Equal. One of the techniques in water-wise gardening is to limit the amount of lawn space, as this requires quite a bit of water, and use alternative, drought tolerant ground-covers instead. Unlike the traditional turf grasses, however, most ornamental grasses are quite drought tolerant once established. The ever popular ‘Karl Foerster’, sedge or blue oat grass are just some of the all time favourites.

9. Natural Heat Shield. Mulching your garden protects the soil from drying out, prevents the loss of nutrients through leaching, and inhibits the growth of annual weeds. Through mulching, the soil temperature as well as moisture level will be more constant - the trick is to apply the mulch when the soil is moist.

10. Location, Location, Location. Where and how you plant can also have an effect on how much you will have to water. Try to plant perennials away from large trees and shrubs, so that their roots are not competing for water and nutrients. Letter: A heartfelt thank you for teachers My name is Amanda Willumeit and I have lived in Cranbrook my entire life. I am a proud Canadian and a proud British Columbian.

With the current atrocities happening to our public education system I can’t help but think of all of the people who have given unselfishly to me and who have contributed so much to who and where I am today. My parents, of course, are there leading the pack and for them I am forever grateful. But what of the truly unsung heroes, those who gave me the tools I would need in life and those who taught me to use them? I am speaking of the teachers, right here in Cranbrook where I was born and raised, who inspired me and made school such a joyful place that when it came time for me to choose a career, I couldn’t imagine ever having to leave school, and thus I chose to join the profession that influenced me so much; Teaching.

Throughout my education, I feel that I was truly blessed with some of the very best educators, people who loved their jobs, loved the kids and gave 100% of themselves everyday; perhaps

that is why they were so influential to me. And so, I am here to pay tribute to those individuals and the gifts that they have given to me: K-7 (Steeples Elementary, where I still to this day feel at home) Mrs. Hamigami (Kindergarten)- the gifts of tolerance and acceptance, given to me when I didn’t want to hold hands with another student because they were different from me. To this day I remember her words, “Don’t choose who you like because of what they look like outside, choose them because of how they make you feel in your heart.”

Mrs. Bjerstead (Grade 1) – the knowledge that I was important and deserving of love. I will never forget how she lined us all up on picture day and with love and attention neatly combed each of our hair, straightened and tucked in our shirts and made sure our faces were clean so that each of us could stand proudly with our toothless grins.

Mrs. Sandberg (Grade 2) – the gift of accountability. A lot of people thought she was too tough, but I know now that she was teaching us

to always be accountable for our actions and choices, never letting us get away with being rude or unkind. It was a hard gift to swallow at 7 years old, but worth so much to me now.

Mr. Mackie (Grades 3 & 5) – the gifts of wonderment, creativity and exploration (oh yeah, and my Times Tables!!).

This man took us on African Safari’s , to the bottom of the ocean, through the jungles and into a “Week in the Life of a Super Hero,” all with a little paper, glue, paint and of course, clay! Learning was so much fun that most of the time we didn’t even realize how much we had learned. When you love your job, you never really have to grow up.

Mr. Knipfel (Grade 4) – the gift of poetry, the voice to use it, and my retained ability to play the recorder. Every season brought new songs, poems and verse which we were encouraged wholeheartedly to vocalize, even placing at the Fine Arts Festival both with the class and individually with “Banana’s & Cream!”

Mr. Gill (Grade 6) – the knowledge that the power that comes with being a leader is not to be abused. But, he also showed me that the gift of remembrance can mean more to a person

than anything else with the simple gift of a card acknowledging my graduation from high school.

The fact that I had meant enough to somebody to be remembered at a time when I felt incredibly lost and overwhelmed renewed my waivering faith in myself.

Ms. Nahm (Grade 7) – The value of being a positive role model to those younger and/ or less privileged than myself. The self-responsibility that came so easily to me was difficult to others. Ms. Nahm showed me that I could lead through example; a great gift for a future teacher!

Grades 8 and 9 were spent at Laurie Junior Secondary. These were, to put it lightly, very difficult years for me. Yet, regardless of my own self doubt and insecurity, Mr. Wiwchar, Mr. Harkass, Mrs. Cuthill (Eckersley), Mrs. Jacobson, Mr. Stump and Mr. Toyota were always there to give a smile, an “encouraging nudge” ( well, let’s just say it, a good old fashioned kick in the pants!), praise for my academic prowess and full encouragement to step out of my comfort zone and showcase my public speaking abilities (only grade eight to run for student council!, I may not have won but certainly made clear

my ability to command a room, another great teacher quality, Thanks Mr. Toyota and Mrs. Cuthill!).

Grade 10. I have to say that hind sight being what it is, it is now that I can see the gifts given to me during this year, most important of all, humility and the ability to eat crow! That being said, here goes. . . I would like to take this opportunity to formally apologize to every teacher that I swore at, told off, embarassed, humiliated, lied to, and was just out and out rude to. In particular, Mrs. Fadeef: God Bless your soul, Ms. Strobel: wherever you are, I hope your still teaching, and Mr. Oliver: it takes incredible strength in character to handle the daily rants of a rebelling15 year old; thank-you.

Grades 11 and 12 truly are a blur to me as I studied relentlessly, ran for Sweetheart of Sam Steele and took part in Mount Baker’s, “The Tempest.” One teacher who really stands out for me during this time is Mr. Conrad. I was in his English 12 class and later when it came time to apply for Universities and Colleges, he was the one who really questioned my choices and let me know that I didn’t have to settle. I had only applied to one school at the time; the College of

the Rockies, because I couldn’t afford to go anywhere else.

Mr. Conrad made me feel like even though I felt that this was my only choice, had I wanted to, I could have accomplished anything.

Now, here I sit at 35 years old, the married mother of three children and a Kindergarten teacher at Gordon Terrace. In the 14 years that I have been teaching here in Cranbrook, both as a TTOC and as a contract teacher, I have been blessed to work side by side with many of the afore mentioned teachers and have also gotten to work with and learn from many other incredible leaders. I have taught every grade from K-12 in some facet and have begged, borrowed and stolen countless incredible ideas from my colleagues. I watch in awe the passion and drive that propel them forward each day; I watch them celebrate the tiniest of victories with their students and then hide in the shadows when the victories are theirs.

As of late, my colleagues and friends have chosen to take a stand against a government hell-bent on the oppression of our public school system. I have watched them hold their heads high and stand their ground for what is right

for the future of our children and subsequently, us. Even with the adversity they are faced with on a daily basis, they continue to persevere, to lead and nurture. They bend and sway, readjusting lessons in an effort to keep things as consistent as possible. I have heard many people question my colleagues resolve challenging the strike action and in response, I have witnessed a solidarity amongst teachers fed by their unwavering desire to see learning conditions improved across this great province. It is with great gratitude that I thank every teacher from my past and all of my colleagues, including our CUPE staff without whom I would be lost, for their passion.

I am a teacher, but I am also a parent. I am a product of B.C’s public school system.

I am everything that I am today because of the commitment of the teachers in my life past and present. Who I am tomorrow is dependent on the youth of today. If the message we send to them is that they are not important what message will they have for us?

Established in 2008, this bylaw states that when police attend at a business premises to provide service in response to a false alarm of a security alarm system, the owner of the property on which the premises are located shall pay to the City of Cranbrook: $100 for the first offence; $150 for the second; $200 for each offence thereafter. Regional District of East Kootenay BYLAW 2528 Bylaw Amendment - TaTa Creek The Regional District of East Kootenay (RDEK) Board of Directors is considering an application by 0790656 BC Ltd. to amend the Electoral Area E Zoning & Floodplain Management Bylaw. The Ministry of Transportation recently completed a Rural Highway Safety and Speed Review and will be implementing changes to improve safety and mobility on our highways.

Submitted Columbia Basin Trust is offering an exciting opportunity to Basin residents: to volunteer on its Environment Grants Evaluation Committee. Members will serve a three-year term and will review environment grant applications and make funding recommendations. For more information and to apply by July 25, visit cbt.org/ egevaluation.

While the Trust has always relied on a group of environmental experts from the Basin, it is now creating a new committee structure

that will include more community input. This approach will ensure that project funding decisions are based on a balance of technical and community input from Basin residents.

The revision is one of several changes being made to the Environment Grants program in response to input received from residents when the Trust was creating its new Environment Strategic Plan 2014 – 2019.

“One of the things we heard when creating our new plan is that people would like to see deeper community involvement in

the project evaluation process—so this new committee structure is a response to that feedback,” said Tim Hicks, Columbia Basin Trust, Manager, Water and Environment. “We are looking for applicants from across the region with a range of experience and perspectives—from technical and professional environmental expertise to non-profit, business and industry experience.”

Flipping pancakes leads to donation for Child Development Centre Submitted

Tamarack Centre Sam Steele Days Kick Off Pancake Breakfast raised $1575.98 for the Kootenay Child Development Centre.

The Sam Steele Days Kick-Off Pancake Breakfast was held at Tamarack Centre on June 19th, 2014 and 488 Cranbrook citizens and visitors in the area came out to enjoy a breakfast feast of pancakes with fruit sauces & whipped cream, sausages, juice, hot chocolate, coffee

and tea. The breakfast was by donation, and a grand total of $1575.98 were raised and donated to the Kootenay Child Development Centre.

The Kootenay Child Development Centre (KCDC) is a multiservice centre that provides a full continuum of child health and development services in one accessible central location. KCDC was a vision of community service providers and the Community Connections Society of Southeast BC (CCS).

A big thank you to all of the local businesses for their very generous support, donations and sponsorship; Bridge Interiors donated their large tents, Save On Foods for the very generous donation of food, Culligan Water for help with ice and water, Tim Horton’s for keeping the coffee on, Sandor Rentals for the grill and chairs, Scotia Bank for the use of their grill, and Green Door catering for cooking up such a wonderful breakfast.

As forestry seems to be making a comeback, employment opportunities are on the rise for trained and skilled forestry workers. However, since the downturn in forestry in the Kootenays, many youth have moved on to jobs in the Oil & Gas or Mining industries. This has created a labour gap, whereby employers are now faced with hiring challenges due to a lack of interested, trained, and experienced forestry workers looking to re-join the industry. Historically, forestry was a successive, family-based business whereby owner/ operators would train their children who would then eventually take over the business.

Now, employers have to recruit externally, which has resulted in training needs that are both very extensive and expensive.

To help address some of these training needs, the Ktunaxa Nation Council has extended their employment and training services to the north end of Kootenay

Lake by offering a Forestry Fundamentals BladeRunners program in Kaslo. The 12-day intensive program began June 23 and wrapped up on Friday July 4th, 2014.

Ten local youth hailing from all over the region (Crawford Bay, Nelson, Meadow Creek, Kaslo) have successfully completed the forestry training.

“Working with the Kaslo Community Forest Association and local industry leaders, we designed a program aimed at providing youth with the basic

safety, technical and employability skills needed to be successful in an entry-level forestry position,” said Training Coordinator Skye MacKenzie.

The Forestry Fundamentals program was comprised of many industry certifications, including Chainsaw Operator, S-100, S-185, ATV Operator, Radio Communication, as well as safety courses such as Occupational First Aid Level 1, Transportation Endorsement, WHMIS and Construction Safety Training Systems.

To ensure youth were

generally prepared for employment in forestry, job-readiness skills such as resume and cover letter writing, interview skills, job retention skills and labour market research were important components to the program.

“Not only have these young people come out with the certifications that employers are looking for, but they are also armed with the skills and confidence needed to maintain their job once they attain it,” continued MacKenzie.

Many participants already have jobs lined up. Three have been hired for the youth summer positions offered by the Kaslo Community Forest. Another has begun tree planting and will also be firefighting throughout the season.

The Meadow Creek Mill has just recently reopened, providing potential opportunities for several participants.

The recent Roller Derby Championship, held in Kimberley, was filled with the usual derby rock ‘em, sock ‘em action.

Rollbots take derby championship Submitted The championship in Kimberley recently was a fantastic night of roller derby.

The Brawlers and the Rollbots played first to see who would move on to take the first place team, the Barbarians.

The Rollbots came

out with the win, and played a second game of the evening. The Barbarians lead almost the entire game in points, but in the last 4 minutes with a few Barb jammer penalties, the Rollbots caught up and won 166-153 to take home to champion-

ship. Congratulations, Rollbots!

Cranbrook Heat bring home silver The Cranbrook Heat U14C Girls Fastball team will be coming home from Maple Ridge with a medal

after a strong showing in the U14C Provincial Championships over the weekend. The Heat were 6 and 1 as they

advanced to the finals against the Chilliwack Her-ricanes. In an exciting final game, the Heat lost 11-10 after 10 innings of play to take silver in the Provincial Championship.

Hans Kaufmann March 12, 1948 - June 29, 2014 Hans Kaufmann was born in Teufen, Appenzell on March 12th, 1948. After graduating from forestry school, with nothing but a suitcase and $500 to his name, he ventured across the Atlantic Ocean to Canada. He landed in Manitoba in 1971 where he went to work in the logging camps of the Canadian North.

He decided to travel west across Saskatchewan and Alberta, whereupon crossing the Rocky Mountains he realized he had found his home. He settled down in Cranbrook where he worked with Crestbrook Forest Industries which later became Tembec. In 1977 he was joined by Ursula, and they married in 1979, and would go on to raise four children in Wasa. In 1996 he quit his post with Tembec and started his own consulting business, Forsta Contracting.

Hans’ career was always a source of passion and pride and he worked tirelessly to support his family and community.

Hans was involved in many community organizations and activities. He was a devoted member of the Wasa Lion’s Club for which he received several awards over his 34 years of service. Hans was influential in building and developing the Blue Lake Forest Education Society and was an active board member for several years. As a lover of the outdoors, he enjoyed many sports such as soccer and cross-country skiing, and spent much time camping, hiking and hunting in the backcountry.

In 2006, he was diagnosed with Parkinson’s paired dementia. Despite the numerous challenges he faced, he remained, active, positive, and continued to enjoy life.

Hans Kaufmann passed away at his much-loved home in the mountains, surrounded by his family on Sunday, June 29th, 2014. He is survived by his loving wife Ursula and four children, Andrea, Barbara, Claudia, and Daniel, and grandson, Aiden, and sisters in Switzerland, Ursula and Sylvia. A Celebration Of Life Service for Hans will be held on Sunday, July 13th, 2014 at 2:00 pm at the Wasa Community Hall.

Job Summary: East Kootenay Addiction Services Society (EKASS) is looking for a dynamic and experienced addictions counsellor to fill a full-time vacancy in the Elk Valley. The successful applicant will work with the addictions team in the Elk Valley to provide screening, assessment, treatment planning and individual, group and family counselling to adults affected by substance misuse. The position also works with other community health partners and community groups to improve overall health services and increase public awareness of substance misuse issues. Tamarack Centre and local partners support Gran Fondo Submitted Tamarack Centre has partnered with Sunrise Rotary and Gerick Sports in a contest to give away a Norco Wolverine Mountain Bike in efforts to raise awareness of the Kootenay Rockies Gran Fondo event being held September 7th, 2014. The contest to win the bike was held at Tamarack Centre, and ran from June 12th until July 1st 2014. Hundreds of names were entered into the barrel, but Lori Stevenson of Cranbrook was the lucky recipient.

The Second Annual Kootenay Rockies Gran Fondo, presented by Taylor Adams Chartered Accountants has been organized by the Cranbrook Sunrise Rotary Club. The purpose of the ride is to serve as an opportunity for cyclists to partici-

pate in a world class Fondo, bring tourists to our region, and raise funds for local charitable endeavours. The intention is to have the Cranbrook - Kimberley Rails to Trails Society as a recipient of a portion of the event proceeds. Other funds raised through the event will be used to support community projects in our area.

We are committed to using local suppliers and businesses to benefit our community.

A Gran Fondo is an organized, mass participation cycling event.

Many cyclists use Gran Fondos to challenge themselves to ride a long distance with fellow cyclists while being supported organizationally. The routes are well sign-posted and marshalled and riders are able to use aid stations positioned at intervals along the route to replenish their

nutritional needs and drink supplies. Riders are provided with mechanical and medical support if needed.

Some participants ride the event like a race, while others simply ride for a personal challenge and the camaraderie with friends and family.
