Getting the WORD out Hospital uses white board for communication

PORT ALBERNI—While e-mail, Tweets and other electronic media are playing an increasing role in modern communications, staff at West Coast General Hospital (WCGH) are finding there’s still a lot to be said for a handwritten note. Mind you, it makes an impression when the notes are written on a board about one metre high and four metres wide. Hospital Site Director Ellen Brown calls it the “big board” and she’s eager to share the messages on it with patients, visitors, physicians, hospital staff and others who walk past it in a busy hallway just off the hospital’s health square. “We’re increasing SUBMITTED PHOTO communication about the quality initiatives that we are West Coast General Hospital Licensed Practical Nurse Trish Diemert updates messages on the big board in her role as a member of the hospital’s Quality Improvement Project team. undertaking —what we’re trying to do and how we’re trying to do it,” said Brown. Powerful bodies

Debunking the weight training myth for any age

A

hhh, poor old weight training. Sometimes it just gets picked on, but it is mostly just misunderstood. For women who want toned, curved bodies there is a myth that weight training is going to ‘bulk you up’ and take away your feminine look. This is so far from the truth. There’s also a huge intimidation factor entering a foreign gym environment. The thought of ‘what if people are watching me?’ could be an event on ‘Fear Factor’ for a lot of people. It’s time to put misconceptions aside and make this a key part of your weekly fitness program in order to increase your health, protect your body as you age, and enjoy being active. What we are really talking about here is resistance training. Resistance training

Susan Fox is a certified personal trainer. SUBMITTED PHOTO

is any exercise where you are working against a force where your muscles have to contract. Repeated enough times in the right way, the result should be an increase in muscular endurance, muscle tone and strength. I am going to talk about training with weights, but resistance training can be done with bands, suspension training systems or body weight exercises. Weight training is not just about ‘lifting heavy’, and it isn’t necessary either in order to reap the health benefits. There are many important reasons to resistance train that address many health concerns such as heart and stroke disease. It promotes good mental health and decreases stress, the right program decreases back pain, diabetes, etc , but here are a few of my favourites:

• It fires up your metabolism.

Muscle fibres are like little fat burning furnaces. We naturally lose muscle mass as we age, which slows the metabolism down. By training, you can build the muscle back up again. If the basis of your exercise regime has been cardio (walking, running, biking), you may find yourself hitting a plateau where improvement has stopped. Time to add in some resistance training.

• Everyday activities, work or sports become easier and more enjoyable.

Mowing the lawn or having a day in the garden is easier; you are now strong enough to carry all your grocery bags up the stairs. Your balance is also better, which keeps your safer in daily activities and decreases falls and accidents. If you’re an athlete, your performance

will be enhanced with the right program. Even if your job is really physical and you feel you get enough that way, resistance training will help strengthen and protect you, decreasing the incidence of muscular injury. • It builds bone strength.

Weightlifting helps counteract age related bone density loss. As we age, bone breakage is a real concern. Studies have shown that we can prevent brittle bones with regular light-moderate strength training. You will become stronger and more powerful in your own body. • I consider it to be a part of the fountain of youth.

Weightlifting fights the appearance of aging. Muscle is about 18 per cent more dense than fat and occupies less space.

De-stress–with SODA S

We’re not talking the carbonated beverage

ODA is great for your health, but I’m not talking about the fizzy beverage in a can. The kind of SODA I’m talking about is actually an acronym that stands for a technique that can be used when we’re feeling stressed, upset, worried, or fearful. Because our mind and our body are not separate elements the quality of our thoughts and emotions can have an effect on our physical health as well. For example, if we experience stress, we may also notice such physical symptoms as sore shoulders, sore jaws, headaches, and/or acid indigestion. Conversely, if we’re given happy news we may feel a lightness and expansion in the body, and a sense of peace may wash over us. So although it’s not reasonable to say that we should never feel stressed or

Stop Observe Detach Align such, it can however become a problem if the stress is ongoing, especially over extended periods of time. That’s why it’s important to find ways to free yourself, even if for short periods of time, from heavy emotions and to reconnect with some inner peace. One quick way to distress is to try SODA. That is: Stop. Observe. Detach. Align. This strategy can be applied to many situations, but let’s say that you’re worried about a new task you’ve been given at work. You may feel tightness

in the chest, and a knot in the stomach. Stop your activity and your thinking for a moment. Observe yourself— where you physically are, who is with you, and what’s taking place, all this from a witnessing perspective. Detach yourself from the drama at the time—you might even want to take a deep breath in and out and take a step back. Align yourself with who you really are when you’re not caught up in the drama. Be kind and compassionate with yourself. Remember SODA: Stop Observe Detach Align Many people find that by using this technique adapted from meditation teacher Davidji they are able to feel more relaxed and make better decisions. And also that their

body feels better too. Jin Shin Do, acupressure, Reiki and meditation are other good ways of easing stress, and re-align with your inner peace and wellbeing, all from a bodymind-spirit perspective. Jin Shin Do acupressure uses gentle yet deep finger pressure on specific acu-points and helps to release “armouring” or chronic tension, balance the “Qi” or energy, and improve vitality. This clothes-on method helps relieve stress and trauma related problems, as well as physical pain or tension. Jin Shin Do promotes a pleasant trance like state, in which one can relax and move out of the head and into the body, accessing feelings and inner wisdom. Live the GOOD life–whatever that means

M

ost people today want “the good life”. What does that mean? What constitutes a good life? If you were to go and ask all the people you knew, family members, work colleagues, everyone would probably have a somewhat different answer. But there will probably be a common thread amongst most people you know because if they live or work in your circle of friends and acquaintances, many of them will have similar values as you. Some might say that the things that are most important to them include family, relationships, their home, hobbies, money, and even the “stuff ” in their lives. However, it doesn’t really matter what their definition is, because you are the one whose definition of the good life is what really matters. I recently read an article on

this subject, which identified seven key areas that are important to most people in order for them to feel they have a good life. These are: meaningful relationships, meaningful productivity, spiritual awareness, mental health, physical health, keeping money in its place, and cultivating a kind and caring disposition. Let’s talk about meaningful relationships. The people in our lives are important to us. Having good friends is right at the top of list, probably falling second after

family relationships. Whether someone has a long list of friends, or a smaller more intimate list, it is the quality of these relationships that’s important. There are all kinds of relationships in the world, and each is important in unique ways. There are relationships between family members, between work associates, friends, members on sports teams, and even the relationship one has with pets. It is a basic human need to be able to share our thoughts, feelings, hopes, worries and

experiences with the people in our lives. This helps affirm and define our own existence. Nurture and care for these relationships, because these can make us truly happy, and contribute greatly to that sense of having a good life. As an investment advisor, I feel strongly that one very important aspect of my job is developing a good relationship with my clients. Trust is key. My relationship with my clients is one where trust and confidence come before anything else. I value relationships, both personally and professionally. Relationships are how we connect with the world and the people around us, every moment of every day. I hope this gets you thinking about the importance of the relationships in your life. Safe travels

Be prepared when you travel: don’t let illness or injury put a damper on your vacation or your pocketbook.

Whether you are travelling outside your province or out of the country for a few days or a few months, travel medical insurance will protect against the cost of unexpected emergencies that may happen prior to or during your trip. Travel medical insurance covers injury or sickness requiring an emergency hospital stay or emergency medical treatment while travelling outside your home province, territory or abroad. Benefits include licenced ambulance, emergency dental expense, prescription drug reimbursement, emergency air transportation and repatriation, board and lodging for you or your travelling companion while confined to a hospital,

expenses to bring a family member to your bedside if hospitalized, return to destination if you are returned home following emergency air transportation and more. Here are some basic safety tips to follow when travelling, home or abroad: • Stay hydrated • Avoid sun exposure • Wear sunglasses • Use sunscreen • Limit your time in the sun • Scan your travel documents and e-mail them to yourself. These days, digital is best. That way your documents won’t go missing even if your bags do. This article was provided by MacDermotts Insurance Agency.

Beauty is paint deep Give your house some TLC

E

xterior painting season has arrived. Now is the time to refresh the outside of your home. The window of opportunity is short for the Alberni Valley so here are some basic tips to make your project go smoothly and efficiently.

Preparation is the key to any successful paint job.

You want to make sure you clean your surface with the suggested cleaner and make sure you rinse off all the residue. Make sure the surface is completely dry before applying any paint product to the substrate and give that area a light sand. A light sand between coats is recommended for optimal adherence. Talk to your local paint expert about the correct product for your application.

In some situations, you may need a specialty primer to help seal or prepare your surface for your top coat. Primer can be used to convert your surface from oil (alkyd) to latex (acrylic, waterborne). A simple way to tell if your surface is oil or latex is with acetone, methyl hydrate or nail polish remover with acetone. Wipe a little on a small surface of the area you want to paint, using a cotton swab or cotton makeup pad. If the paint lifts, it’s latex. If it doesn’t, it’s oil. Application of a top coat makes all the difference, so always read and follow instructions on the label

of your purchased product before application.

The directions will explain the recommended spread rate of your paint (square footage), the dry time and how many coats you should put on (usually one to two coats). Always use a superior product for better coverage and performance. Applicators are very important!

The quality of the paint and the quality of the applicators are very important. If you want a professional looking paint job, use a superior paint product but do not use an inferior applicator. Believe me, a great quality brush and roller make all the difference at few dollars’ difference. Always ask your paint expert which applicator is right for your job. Remember, painting your home is the least expensive way to increase the value of your home and your labour is worth every penny. Using an inferior product will only make you work twice as hard. Paint basics: clean surface, dry surface and sand surface. Prep, prep and prep, then use superior paints as well as higher quality applicators. And ask a lot of questions until you are satisfied with the answers. This article was provided by Valerie Bellwood, paint technician at Colour Corner.

Taking the fear out of counselling

What is ‘counselling’? Maybe you have been stressed for years and going to “counselling’ has been suggested to you. But you are scared. You think it will be costly. You think don’t have time. What if you the boss finds out you are in counselling? Or worse, what if the people in your life start thinking you’re crazy? Relax. When you understand how counselling works, you’ll come to think of it as having a life coach. It’s a way to have a professional ‘listener’ help you declutter your thoughts and emotions so you can focus better on your game. Everyone needs to talk to someone at times. In difficult circumstances, family members and friends,

as wonderful as they are, are unable to provide an objective point of view. Counselling offers this objective perspective, thus helping you to gain insights and strategies to assist in managing a particular situation. A counsellor’s role is to help you to explore your thoughts and your emotions about many issues or situations in a safe, respectful, and confidential environment. Counselling is not about telling you how to live your life nor does it need to be lengthy. Some people liken the process to cleaning out the garage, kitchen cupboards, or the walk-in closet. Moving stuff around doesn’t seem to work. And the more you shift stuff around, the crazier you feel. But if you first take

everything out of the cabinet, information you might want then clean the space, toss out to know is how long and how stuff and put what you really much?
