Kootenays no longer eligible for temporary foreign workers MP David Wilks goes over changes to the federal government’s controversial program

MP David Wilks met with local government leaders last week to explain changes to the federal government’s temporary foreign workers program.

The Kootenay-Columbia MP appeared at the Friday, July 4 board meeting for the Regional District of East Kootenay and answered questions about the local impact of changes to the temporary foreign workers program.

On June 20, Employment Minister Jason Kenney and Immigration Minister Chris Alexander unveiled changes to the controversial temporary foreign worker program.

The changes prevent employers in places with high unemployment rates from applying for temporary foreign workers in the lowest wage and skill groups in the accommodation, food service and retail sectors.

Wilks said that under this requirement, no businesses in the Kootenays are eligible to apply to bring people to Canada under the temporary foreign worker program.

“The unemployment rate (cap) set by Minister Kenney is at six per cent,” said Wilks.

“In the Kootenays, the unemployment rate is at 7.2 per

cent. As a result of that, they can’t apply for temporary foreign workers because it’s over six per cent.

“The problem with that is that they took the 7.2 per cent in February, which was a low time of the year. They need to take that at a higher time of the year, whether that is July or August. That’s something the federal government and the provinces need to work out.”

A cap is also being placed on the number of low-wage temporary foreign workers an employer can hire at each worksite: 30 per cent of a worksite’s employees starting immediately, dropping to 10 per cent by July 2016.

“This does not impact anyone who has an employee capacity of 10 people or less. They can still carry on as they did under the old program,” said Wilks.

Companies will also be required to re-apply each year to hire low-wage temporary foreign workers, instead of every two years.

They’ll pay more for the privilege, too: $1,000 per employee, up from $275.

The government also says it will post the number of temporary foreign workers approved every quarter, along with the names of companies that get the green

light to hire them, in an effort to enhance accountability.

Employers who hire temporary foreign workers must promise not to lay off any Canadian workers or cut their hours, and they must tell the government how many Canadians applied and were interviewed for jobs, along with why they were not hired.

The amount of time a low-wage temporary foreign worker can work in Canada is being reduced to a cumulative total of two years from four years.

Mayor Wayne Stetski asked if the changes to the program will affect people who are already in Canada working under the program.

“We’ve had some great additions to Cranbrook through that program in terms of cultural and just really good people,” he said.

But Wilks said the permits have always come with an expiration date.

“On the application it specifically says, ‘you will return to your country of origin upon expiration of the agreement’,” he said. “They know that they are here temporarily. They are not here on a permanent status. If they want to do that, they can apply, and last year, Canada brought in 750,000 new Ca-

nadians.”

Invermere Mayor Gerry Taft said that temporary foreign workers make a valuable contribution to the Kootenays.

Because right now most of the immigrants who come to Canada go to the major cities. That was the benefit of the temporary foreign workers program – it actually brought diversity into our area.”

Wilks responded that many foreign workers prefer to be in cities.

“The challenge of course is that when a lot of these people come to Canada, they are more comfortable in the urban areas because there will be a group of that ethnic background there,” he said.

“The challenge is getting them to the rural areas, because to some degree they are displaced because there are not that many of them.”

Taft said that changes to the program will have a profound impact in the Columbia Valley.

“What effectively is going to happen, because employers cannot apply in the Columbia Valley right now, and the price for an employee is very high, is effectively mass deportation for a lot of people who are here. When their contracts or work permits expire – whether it’s six months from now or even less – they are going to be sent home,” said Taft. “Some of these people have made homes in the Kootenays, and in some cases they are having children and have purchased property here.

“Although the program is for temporary foreign work-

ers, there are no foreign workers who ever came to Canada with the intention of only working here for a year and then leaving. Every single one of them saw it as a stepping stone to become landed immigrants.”

The temporary foreign workers program has become a hot potato for the Harper government ever since stories of abuses came to light in the news media, including one case where Royal Bank employees were asked to train foreign workers to take over their jobs.

A recent government calculation estimated there were 386,000 temporary foreign workers in Canada, or about two per cent of the labour force, up from about 100,000 in 2002.

“Employers are going to have to try and figure out what they are going to do,” said Wilks. “There were some employers who were basing their business model on how many temporary foreign workers they could employ. That’s not going to happen anymore.

“As Canadians, we were able to deal with this prior to 2002. I’m sure we can figure it out after 2014 as well.”

ranbrook had the Bluebird, but Kimberley had McDougall Hall in Townsite, a terrific place to listen and dance to our local bands (a bowling alley was located in the basement too).

McDougall Hall was managed by the venerable Struan Robertson, a Scotsman whose words of “Arrrr You Rrrrrready?” still ring in my ears (as Struan conducted the dry land training for ski racers at the Hall). The Epics and Henchmen played there a lot. Both of these Kimberley Bands had their loyal followers.

Sadly, Bobby Dixon, the Henchman’s lead singer passed away eight years ago. A few months before Dixie passed away, we went to see Joe Cocker, The Moody Blues, and The Guess Who in Kelowna.

The Henchmen’s drummer Larry Musser is a retired actor living on the Sunshine Coast, while their guitarist Nobber O’Brien plays goal for the Cranbrook Colonels Oldtimers, flies an airplane he rebuilt from scratch and kayaks regularly on the St Mary River.

By the end of the 1960s a new band was coming on the scene.

They were the Blue Velvet Brass, comprised of Guy and Randy Marchi, Ed McKenzie, Mike Turner, who was their lead player, Rudy Sandor, and Dennis Davies on drums. Sam Kirsch took over the drums when Dennis moved to Calgary.

Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass had burst on the scene in Los Angeles at that time, and took America by storm. the Tijuana Brass heavily influenced “The Brass.” Most of the group came from the Selkirk Rotary Band.

The Blue Velvet Brass eventually went out on the road for two years in Western Canada playing cabarets.

I was working for Van’s Tennis Shoes in Los Angeles California in 1967, and in early December Derek Clement rode the bus down to check out the music scene and help me

We went to Sunset Strip just about every night, catching Moby Grape, The Doors (who were awesome!), The Byrds, Buffalo Springfield, Jefferson Airplane and a few club bands. We drove back up north to Canada. Derek had a Beatle haircut and I had long hair. We stopped for gas in a place called Weed, California, and drew the attention of the local sheriff, who threw us in the hoosegow for two days for being “damn longhairs.”

We paid a $25 fine to the judge and jumped back in the car. In our haste to get back to Canada, we were promptly stopped for speeding by the sheriff’s brother mile up the road. Back we went to the Weed Courthouse and paid our speeding fine. With Derek driving, we gingerly headed back to B.C. I have not seen Derek Clement since

those days. He moved to Grande Prairie Alberta and became a highly acclaimed potter, along with his wife B.B. Clement. Derek had a younger brother Garth ”Wib” Clement, who was a great lead guitar player in his own right at the tender age of 14. Garth now lives in Ottawa.. What a duo he and Rob Young were for the Epics. Liverpool had the Beatles, but we had The Epics, they were an amazing. band.

When who should show up at the dance, but Stephie’s on-again-offagain-on-again boyfriend Glen Sather, a hockey player for the Boston Bruins, who had a reputation of being a tough customer in the National Hockey League. The fight between Sather and Johnny Jenkins lasted about

20 seconds. Glen Sather barely got a punch in against the lighning quick J.J. who had his fists and feet going in a blur, it seemed . We were all in shock, after seeng Sather in scraps on TV on Hockey Night In Canada. Of course this was the same night that Coulter coldcocked a Creston guy with a wrench — ouch! Good ol’ Kimberley music memories. It does not seem all that long ago, Sadly McdDougall Hall was demolished.

This has been a musical spin thru the 1960s and 70s music scene in Kimberley and Cranbrook . Dennis Davies never stopped drumming.

Indeed he has just returned from gigging with Nazareth and The Ventures. Mike Turner plays in Cranbrook with Brad and the Boyz and also The BookEnds. MT plays lead guitar and vocals. Larry Musser took me to a Santana Concert in San Francisco in 1971. To see Carlos Santana play Black Magic Woman live ( we were 30 feet from the stage) was just indescribable.

The warm weather is doing wonders for Cranbrook and Kimberley’s public gardens, and it’s a good time to learn more about gardening.

Next week, Wildsight and the Cranbrook Food Action Committee are holding workshops on soil testing called “Feed Your Soil”.

The workshops will cover soil composition, nutrition, contamination and PH, weeds as soil indicators, how to feed the soil as opposed to feeding the plant, timing and local sources for soil amendments, the relationship between soil nutrition and the nutritional content of food, and mid-season plant maintenance.

It’s part of the Edible Garden Workshops and will be held on Tuesday, July 15 in Kimberley from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Open Gate Garden on Rotary Drive.

The workshop will be held in Cranbrook on Wednesday, July 16 from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Public Produce Garden in Mackinnon Park.

The workshop costs $10 but volunteer bursaries are available.

A new series of workshops is being planned for August and October called “Local Food in the Kitchen.” It will cover topics such as foraging (the workshop will consist of a nature walk), sweet canning and sour canning in August. In October, topics will be vinegars and drinks, fermented condiments, and curing meets.

hese days we are talking a lot about sports injuries — concussions and such.

That’s a good thing (that we’re talking about them, not the injuries themselves).

Well, 455 years ago on this day, July 10, they were talking about sports injuries too. Actually, they were talking about one particular sports injury, the great-granddaddy of all sporting injuries, in comparison with which all subsequent sports injuries pale. And they didn’t call it a sports injury — that particular word didn’t exist in the sense we use it now. They were talking about an hastilude, which translates roughly as “martial art.”

On July 10, 1559, the King of France, Henri II of the House of Valois, finally died, in excruciating agony, 10 days after suffering a hideous accident at a jousting tournament.

Picture yourself, all plated up, mounting a heavy horse, taking a heavy spear in hand and galloping in a more or less straight line towards your opponent, with the intent of either breaking your spear on his shield or person, or knocking your opponent off his horse.

Your opponent, of course, is trying to do this to you. What could possibly go wrong?

Jousting was the king of sports (or hastilude) back in

High Medieval and Renaissance times. It derived immediately, of course, from warfare and duelling, in a way that modern hockey, rugby or football did not, although the chances of sustaining a concussion in all these games are probably not much smaller than jousting.

Jousting, of course, was the opportunity for men of honour and chivalry to display these qualities, whatever they may mean. Henri himself was an avid jouster, as some youthful kings often were, and of course he was going to take part in the jousts himself. When kings tilted against their courtiers, they tended to win, for reasons obvious to everyone but the kings themselves perhaps, who saw themselves as the pinnacles of honour, valour and martial prowess.

But the hastilude wasn’t just for nobles. Much like today’s rodeo riders, professional jousters — “knights,” as we think of them — drifted around Europe from tournament to tournament, with a small team of squires, their armour and equipment loaded on horses, in search of prize money.

There are stories in the chronicles of some of these lesser fighters, otherwise unknown to history, bodies like hardened wood and wits completely addled, likely by a lifetime of concussions. Sound familiar?

In any case, on June 30, 1559, Henri II held a gala tournament in Paris, to celebrate the marriage of his daughter Elizabeth to the king of Spain, Philip II, Henri’s longtime

Henri II of France: 1519-1559 enemy with whom he had just made peace. Among other things, the King of France was the husband of Catherine Medici and the father-in-law of Mary, Queen of Scots. On June 30, he took to the tilting ground, winning several bouts.

In the stands were his wife, his mistress, his son and daughterin-law, members of the court.

Beyond the immediate viewing stands, commoners were crowded in windows and on roofs to watch the action.

In the late afternoon, Henri took on one more challenger (and remember, kings always win), a member of his guard, Gabriel Montgomery (a Scottish knight). Montgomery broke his lance on Henri’s person, and a large, splintery shard penetrated Henri’s helmet visor, eye and brain. In the name of chivalry, innit?

They carried the king to his chamber, where it took him, as mentioned, 10 days to die.

Certain legends accompany this event. There’s the story

that the famed Nostradamus, Catherine’s personal astrologer, had predicted it, and that the horse Henri was riding was named Malhereux (unhappy) — a most inauspicious name for a king’s destrier. Royal doctors assembled in the dying king’s chamber, with the severed heads of criminals, into the eyes of which they inserted jagged sticks of wood, to practice the best way of removing the splinter from the king’s own eye (results were inconclusive).

Legends aside, what is for certain is that Henri’s death threw France into turmoil, with international and historic repercussions. A vicious struggle for the throne ensued between rival factions (Catherine Medici managed to ride the middle as de facto queen of France for years), which helped unleash a series of ruinous wars of religion, which crippled France for the next four decades, and affected relations between Protestants and Catholics and French and English for the next couple of centuries. The St. Bartholomew’s Day Massacre, Mary, Queen of Scots, in England, and all that.

July 10 is a good day to remember that physical contests involving honour, winners, losers and full body contact always carry an inherent risk. We can nominate Henri of Valois as patron saint of all those whose lives have been altered by sporting injury. It’s the nature of the hastilude.

Towards end game in the Ukraine What’s Up?

s the Russian-backed rebels abandoned almost all their positions in eastern Ukraine apart from the two regional capital cities, Donetsk and Luhansk, the various players made predictable statements.

Newly elected Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko said cautiously that this could be “the beginning of the turning point in the fight against militants.” Don’t make promises that you are not sure you can keep.

The new defence minister, Lieutenant-General Valeriy Heletey, boldly promised the Ukrainian parliament that “There will be a victory parade... in Ukraine’s Sevastopol.” But that would require the Ukraine to take back the southern province of Crimea, which Russia seized and annexed in March, so it is a promise that will never be kept. Crimea is gone.

Pavel Gubarev, the self-proclaimed governor of the Donetsk People’s Republic, told a rally in the city that “We will begin a real partisan war around the whole perimeter of Donetsk. We will drown these wretches (the Ukrainian army) in blood.”

That is standard morale-raising rhetoric in the wake of a military collapse — or, as the rebels prefer to call it, a “tactical retreat.”

But Igor Strelkov, the military commander of the rebels in Donetsk province, made a truly revealing comment. Pleading for Russian military intervention on 3 July, five days before his paramilitary forces abandoned Sloviansk, Kramatorsk and other rebel strongholds in the north of the province, Strelkov warned Moscow that his troops were “losing the will to fight.”

A military commander will never admit such a thing in public unless his situation is truly desperate. How desperate became

clear on Tuesday when Strelkov’s troops all headed south for the relative safety of Donetsk city.

The Ukrainian army had been shelling them in Sloviansk, but there was no major Ukrainian offensive. The rebel fighters just started pulling out of the city, and those in other rebel-held northern towns followed suit. Strelkov (who is actually a Russian citizen named Igor Girkin) was left scrambling to explain what was happening in terms that made military sense, and he did the best he could.

This may be telling President Poroshenko what he most wants to know, which is whether or this week’s events realGwynne not ly constitute a “turning point” in the military conDyer flict in eastern Ukraine.

The answer appears to be “yes”: the morale of Strelkov’s troops (many of whom are Russian “volunteers”) is cracking as they realise that the motherland is really not going to send its own army into eastern Ukraine to help them out.

There never was mass support for the pro-Russian “revolution” in Donetsk and Luhansk provinces in April. Most people there speak Russian, and they were worried about where the real revolution in Kiev was taking the country even before Russian propaganda started telling them that “fascists” had seized control of the country and wanted to kill them. But they didn’t actually want to join Russia.

When the real revolution began in Kiev late last year, huge crowds of unarmed civilians stayed on Independence Square day and night for months. Only in the final few days did former president Viktor Yanukovych order his police to start shooting, and only then did firearms also appear in the crowd. Things happened very

differently in the east.

There were no huge crowds when pro-Russian rebels seized power in the east, no lengthy occupations of public squares by unarmed civilians, certainly no violence by government forces. Heavily armed groups of masked men just appeared in the streets and took over, declaring that they were creating revolutionary regimes to save the people from the “fascists” in Kiev.

Civilians in the east were sufficiently worried about the intentions of the new government in Kiev that they did not come out in the streets to oppose this armed take-over, but they never came out in large numbers to support it either. This was more evident than ever on Wednesday, when Pavel Gubarev was promising to defend the “whole perimeter” of the city and drown the Ukrainian army in blood.

Donetsk has almost two million inhabitants. The crowd at Gubarev’s rally was a couple of thousand at most. Donetsk will not become a new Stalingrad.

So, at the risk of tempting fate, a prediction: the fighting in eastern Ukraine will not go on for months more, and there will be no heroic rebel last stand in Donetsk or Luhansk. The Ukrainian army is already encircling both cities, but it will not launch a major assault on them either. It will just keep the pressure up, and the rebel forces will quickly melt away.

Western countries will repair their relations with Moscow as fast as possible, since they do not want a new Cold War. But Ukrainians will not forget that Russia seized Crimea and sponsored an armed separatist rebellion in their eastern provinces. President Vladimir Putin has managed to turn Russia’s biggest European neighbour into a permanent enemy.

Potato salad reaches new heights

he quest to make a potato salad has struck an apparent chord with the internet. Zack “Danger” Brown just wanted to raise $10 on Kickstarter to make the salad.

Kickstarter is an online funding platform for creative projects.

The modest goal that the Ohio resident had, however, has been thoroughly eclipsed. At time of writing, funding for the project was around $40,000. That’s after only a week online, with 23 days still to go.

“Basically I’m just making potato salad.

I haven’t decided what kind yet,” wrote Brown in the pitch.

Though the campaign originally had the more modest goal, as the pledged fund rose so too did the lofty goals. At $35 Brown said he’d make quadruple the amount of potato salad.

“I know $35 isn’t 4 x $10, but you guys have earned it,” he wrote.

At $75 he planned a pizza party, and at $100 he decided he would try two different potato salad recipes.

But the money kept coming in, so Brown made some stretch goals — better mayonnaise at $250, putting in a call to a chef for a better recipe at $300, and making “way more potato salad” as well as trying a third recipe at the $350 mark.

Unfortunately for Brown, that wasn’t the end of having to update his goals to new lofty heights. At the $1,000 mark he

decided he would do a live stream of the making of the potato salad. At $1,200 he would pay someone to film a thank-you video for all those who pledged for the salad-making cause.

As the funds reached $1,500, he doubled the number.

“We’re really tearing through these stretch goals. I honestly don’t know what is realistic anymore,” he wrote. But it didn’t take long to pass the $3,000 mark. At that number, he announced that his kitchen is just too small, and said he would rent out a party hall and invite the whole internet to a potato salad party.

“The internet loves potato salad! Let’s show them that potato salad loves the internet!”

The internet does seem to love potato salad, or maybe it loves a good sell.

Backing the salad does seem to have its rewards. For just $3 in funds Brown promises a bite of the potato salad. That promise is for all backers over $3, of which there are over 1,100. So it sounds like there will be some complicated logistics involved in figuring out the feasibly of sending out that many bites of potato salad.

For a $10 pledge, you can hang out in the kitchen with Brown as he makes the potato salad. Now again, I can’t imagine the logistics of having the 800-plus people who pledged over $10 in one building, let alone one kitchen.

So far the potato salad goal has raised

4,000 times its original goal.

The most successful Kickstarter campaign so far has been the Pebble E-Paper Watch, which was aiming for $100,000, but ended up raising over $10 million. There was also the OUYA game console which raised $8.6 million, initially setting out to raise $950,000.

Who knows where the lofty goals of Zack Brown could take this potato salad blockbuster. Perhaps Brown should just start a potato salad-making business — there seems to be a big market for it. After all, people are choosing to put money towards what essentially began as helping someone finance their own lunch.

On the other side of the ocean, someone in the UK is trying to make “the best damn sandwich in town,” but despite the promise of Sheffield’s best sandwich, the fundraiser has not solicited any funds.

Of course the sandwich doesn’t look much different than one you’d buy from a convenience store.

It would seem that there’s something beyond a simple potato salad here. Maybe it’s a potato related conspiracy, or maybe one that has nothing to do with potatoes.

Whatever the case, a large collective body of the internet has stepped behind the potato salad fundraiser and sent a picnic side dish to new heights.

Bandits heading to Kalispell tournament TRE VOR CR AWLEY Sports Editor

After returning from a tournament in Polson, the Bandits are heading back south of the 49th parallel this weekend for another event in Kalispell.

It was a four-game set in Montana where the Cranbrook team came with a win and three losses. The team got their only victory in Polson during their last game of the event, thumping the Whitefish Glacier ‘B’ team 12-4.

“It was looking good, because we were sticking to our approach,” said Brenden Bird, who drove in one and scored two runs during the affair. “We were just staying calm and focused and not getting too anx-

ious or nervous up there.”

The Bandits have been back on home diamond for the last couple days getting in some onfield batting practice as well as in the cages.

“We just really want to get the bats going and get them comfortable in the game situation and have a better mental approach at the plate,” said Bandits head coach Paul Mrazek. “We want to see more fastballs and pitchers throw their breaking balls when they’re ahead in the count. We can’t be swinging at stuff that is up in the letters or down in the dirt.

“So we’re working hard on getting lots of reps, we’ve changed our T-work around, so

hopefully that will improve.”

The Bandits will hopefully have their team wheels this time around, as their bus was stuck in the shop for their trip to Polson last weekend. Cranbrook Dodge was able to step in and provide some courtesy vans to get the team on their way.

“It’s not the first time they saved our bacon,” said Mrazek. “The first trip of the year, down to the Libby tournament, turned out the bus wouldn’t start that morning, and everyone was out at the park and the driver was with the bus, we couldn’t get it down here.

“So we just want to say thanks to Cranbrook Dodge.”

The Cranbrook U19 Heat are provincial champions, capturing the gold medal in Richmond, B.C., after defeating their opponents 5-1 in the final game.

The girls steamrolled through the competition, but also escaped some close games in order to earn their berth in the championship event.

“We went undefeated in the round robin, we finished first to advance into the medal round,” said Heat coach Shawn Hillstead. “From there, then we had to play four games en route to the gold medal game, so all eight games, we were undefeated.”

“The last three were really close games,” added Hillstead. “The semifinal, we actually

won it in the seventh inning. It was tied going into the bottom of the seventh and so we advanced there. “…We were down 4-0 early in the game, then we bounced back and clawed our way back to make it 4-4 and then we won it in the seventh inning.

“That was probably the most exciting game.”

It’s a close team, with a few players that have been together since winning the U14C championship in Cranbrook back in 2011.

“We’re competing against zones and districts, especially in the Lower Mainland, which has a lot more kids at their disposal, so we’re fortunate to have a good core,” added Hillstead.

SAO PAULO, Brazil The World Cup’s second semifinal was supposed to put the silky skills of Lionel Messi and Arjen Robben in the spotlight.

Instead, a goalkeeper and two rock-solid defences stole the show.

Argentina goalie Sergio Romero saved two penalties Wednesday to send Argentina into the World Cup final with a 4-2 shootout win over the Netherlands after tough defending and a lack of creative spark from either team consigned the match to a 0-0 stalemate.

In a twist of fate, Romero credited Netherlands coach Louis van Gaal with helping

launch his career when he arrived as an inexperienced youngster at AZ Alkmaar in the Dutch league.

“I will be forever grateful to the coach for helping me out in a country that is so different from ours,” Romero said.

A day after Germany lit up the World Cup with its clinical 7-1 destruction of host Brazil, the Dutch and Argentines could not manage a goal between them in 120 minutes before the shootout.

Messi, widely regarded as one of the greatest players of all time, will have to do play far better in Sunday’s final at Rio de Janeiro’s Maracana Stadium if he is to engi-

EDMONTON - It’s early days, but the 2-0 Edmonton Eskimos’ mad-dog defence is setting the tone for takeaways in the 2014 CFL season.

Under new head coach Chris Jones, the Eskimos are off the charts in the CFL’s takeaway/ giveaway chart at plus-seven.

Four other teams are a distant second at plus-one.

Of the 18 interceptions in the league after week two, seven have been by the Eskimos.

“Those are momentum changers,” said defensive back Aaron Grymes, who is tied for the team lead with two interceptions.

It’s also a far cry from last season, when the Eskimos were second worst in the league at minus15 en route to a 4-14 record and the fourth missed playoff opportunity in eight seasons.

The defence credits Jones’s up-tempo practices that so far have the Eskimos finding a second gear in the fourth quarter while their opponents are running on fumes.

Grymes said ball security and takeaways are emphasized by Jones in practice drills given that turnovers have a psychological as well as a tactical impact.

Grymes said pressure upfield from the Eskimos’ defensive line is bringing hurried throws, overthrows and interceptions downfield.

“Our D-line does that every game, every series,” said Grymes.

“I tell them that on the sideline. When I come off, I say ‘D-line, you make it easy on us.

Keep making it easy on us and we’ll return the favour.’

The Eskimos are second in the league with eight sacks. Defensive lineman Odell Willis has three and defensive tackle Almondo Sewell has two.

Grymes and Watkins also credit schemes hatched by Jones and his coaching staff, leaving opposing quarterbacks unsure where the pressure is coming from.

Against Hamilton, Ticats quarterback Zach Collaros was hammered in tandem by Grymes and linebacker Eric Samuels coming off the left end, while a defensive lineman dropped off into coverage on the far side.

CHICAGO - This was a no-brainer from start to finish. Jonathan Toews and Patrick Kane wanted to stay in Chicago and the Blackhawks wanted to keep the high-scoring forwards in the only NHL uniform they have ever known.

1898 New Ambulance … The C.P. ambulance is stationed here now, a fact that those who have to be hauled over rough roads to the hospital will appreciate.

Thief … An old man who camps in a “brushhouse” near the creek was last week robbed of all his earthly possessions; during his absence someone entered his primitive abode and cleaned out the few contents — blankets, a coat and lesser articles.

Bad Swarms … It is reported that while making the passage between Wardner and Fort Steele, the captains of the steamers are obliged to have a man each side of them with branches of bushes to brush mosquitoes away from him, or he would be unable to guide the steamer.

Cranbrook’s Bank … The fixtures for the Canadian Bank of Commerce are being made and put in place, and the entire first floor of the building in which the bank will be located is being remodelled and great improve-

ments being made under the supervision of Mr. Scott, temporarily in charge.

First Court Proceedings … The first court proceedings held in Cranbrook took place last Thursday before Justice Hutchins, the case being a small debt proceeding.

The court was held in Mr. Hutchison’s residence, and Attorney Herkimer was the plaintiff’s lawyer, the defense not putting in an appearance.

A Policeman Needed ... Recent events tend to show that a good policeman is a necessity in Cranbrook. There have been at least two instances quite recently of drunken navvies losing considerable sums of money, while cases of petty larceny are becoming too numerous for comfort or convenience. Last Friday afternoon a young Swede was about town crazy drunk, and in the evening, becoming weary, he sought a soft spot on which to repose his tired bones, and finding one suited to his aesthetic tastes on the manure pile at the livery stable, nestled his noble brow in its downy and ambrosial depths. In this condition he was found by Provincial Constable Barnes, who, knowing the Swede had a considerable sum of money on his person, took it from him and put it in the hands of a responsible party for safe keeping. The

Swede made a vigorous fight, and finally had to be handcuffed and his legs roped; in lieu of a better place he was put in the loft of the stable barn, where after a couple hours’ confinement he apparently regained his senses, was released and his money returned.

1899 The Fat Men Won ... A Baseball Game With Plenty of Beef but Little Beefing. There was a game of ball played last Thursday evening that aroused greater interest and furnished more amusement than any contest that has ever taken place in East Kootenay. The fat men’s team, organized by Frank Rankin, played the local team. The score at the end of three innings stood 17 to 15 in favour of the corpulent gentlemen. It was a warm game from start to finish, and the playing of the fat men was one continual round of revelations.

Their costumes attracted great attention and elicited many murmurs of praise and it took one inning before the members of the fat men’s club could control the irresistible desire to run to the left in order to save time in reaching the beer keg on third base, and it was seldom that the coacher could get one of them off from third base, to get a home run.

For Fire Protection ... The work

of putting in the water hydrants on Baker Street is now in progress.

These will afford very good fire protection if the businessmen provide apparatus.

1900 The Mysteries Of Nature …

One of the most marvellous discoveries in the Selkirks – a pool whose fumes bring death to mankind, beasts of the field and birds of the air. William T. Vangordon, a Colorado prospector, brings word that he has discovered, five days travel northwesterly from Cranbrook, in the rugged Selkirk range, a death dealing pool, the fumes from which exterminate alike man, beast and bird. What he saw from the cliffside were a large number of skeletons and piles of bones of various animals. Like many prospectors Vangordon carries a field-glass, and by it’s aid he claims to have distinguished the skeletons of a number of bighorns, bear and deer in addition to smaller animals, and the worst of it he positively declares that the skeletons of human beings are not lacking. He volunteered to lead “Long” Oliver Burge, “Bill” Hamilton, Charlie Estmere, and H. Pollen to the place without reward. The party started this morning; they took with them 500 feet of small, stout line. One of

them will be fastened to the line and go ahead to the pool; two others will be-fastened 100 feet to the rear of him, so if the first falls or shows signs of being overcome they can drag him back; and if all three succumb, the pack‑horses, which will be attached to the far end of the line, will drag all three back.

1901 A Band For Cranbrook ... A subscription paper is being circulated to raise money to buy instruments for a brass band in Cranbrook. Mr. Higginbotham, a musician of long experience, has consented to take charge of an organization, and under his direction Cranbrook should have a first class band in a few months.

Free Bath … A. B. VanDecar, of the Royal hotel, is giving free baths during the hot weather. He has a fine bathroom and is willing to give the people a chance for a swim when they need it.

Ktunaxa Nation celebrates forestry training program for the townsman

As forestry seems to be making a come-back, employment opportunities are on the rise for trained and skilled forestry workers.

However, since the downturn in forestry in the Kootenays, many youth have moved on to jobs in the Oil & Gas or Mining industries. This has created a labour gap, whereby employers are now faced with hiring challenges due to a lack of interested, trained, and experienced forestry workers looking to re-join the industry. Historically, forestry was a successive, family-based business whereby owner/operators would train their children who would then eventually take over the business. Now, employers have to recruit externally, which has resulted in training needs that are both very extensive and expensive.

To help address some of these training needs, the Ktunaxa Nation Council has extended their employment and training services to the north end of Kootenay Lake

by offering a Forestry Fundamentals BladeRunners program in Kaslo. The 12-day intensive program began June 23 and wrapped up on Friday July 4th, 2014. Ten local youth hailing from all over the region (Crawford Bay, Nelson, Meadow Creek, Kaslo) have successfully completed the forestry training.

“Working with the Kaslo Community Forest Association and local industry leaders, we designed a program aimed at providing youth with the basic safety, technical and employability skills needed to be successful in an entry-level forestry position,” said Training Coordinator Skye MacKenzie.

The Forestry Fundamentals program was comprised of many industry certifications, including Chainsaw Operator, S-100, S-185, ATV Operator, Radio Communication, as well as safety courses such as Occupational First Aid Level 1, Transportation Endorsement, WHMIS and Construction Safety Training

Systems. To ensure youth were generally prepared for employment in forestry, job-readiness skills such as resume and cover letter writing, interview skills, job retention skills and labour market research were important components to the program.

“Not only have these young people come out with the certifications that employers are looking for, but they are also armed with the skills and confidence needed to maintain their job once they attain it,” continued MacKenzie.

Many participants already have jobs lined up. Three have been hired for the youth summer positions offered by the Kaslo Community Forest.

Another has begun tree planting and will also be firefighting throughout the season. The Meadow Creek Mill has just recently reopened, providing potential opportunities for several participants.

It is expected that all ten participants will be employed in the forestry industry this season.

Columbia Basin Trust is offering an exciting opportunity to Basin residents: to volunteer on its Environment Grants Evaluation Committee.

Members will serve a three-year term and will review environment grant applications and make funding recommendations.

While the Trust has always relied on a group of environmental experts from the Basin, it is now creating a new committee structure that will include more community input.

This approach will ensure that project funding decisions are based on a balance of technical and community input from Basin residents.

The revision is one of several changes being made to the Environment Grants program in response to input received from residents when the Trust was creating its new Environment Strategic Plan 2014 – 2019.

“One of the things we heard when creating our new plan is that people would like to see deeper community involvement in the project evaluation process—so this new committee structure is a response to that feedback,” said Tim Hicks, Columbia Basin Trust, Manager, Water and Environment.

“We are looking for applicants from across the region with a range of experience and perspectives—from technical and professional environmental expertise to non-profit, business and industry experience.”

Kelsh says the main concerns for crews are keeping the fire from oil and gas wellheads in the area and trying to stop it from spreading across the boundary into Alberta.

About 200 people have been evacuated from two oil and gas camps in the area while the number of personnel attacking the fire is expected to grow to 100 by the end of Wednes-

day.

Kelsh says those fighting the blaze are seeing Rank 3 and Rank 4 fire behaviour, which means the flames are growing up to the tops of trees.

While there is rain forecast for further north in B.C., that isn’t the case for the Tumbler Ridge area, where the fire is expected to grow in the coming days.

Two new prehistoric mammals discovered during B.C. dig C ANADIAN PRESS

WINNIPEG — A biology professor at Brandon University has played a pivotal role in discovering two new prehistoric mammals which roamed North America 52 million years ago.

David Greenwood’s finds have just been published as the cover story in the July edition of the U.S.-based Journal of Vertebrate Paleontology.

Greenwood made the discoveries while leading fossil digs in Driftwood Canyon Provincial Park, near Smithers, B.C., in 2010 and

2011.

One of the mammals was a relative of the ancient tapir that would be about the size of a large dog.

The other is a relative of the hedgehog that would be smaller than a mouse.

Greenwood says very few fossil mammals of the early Eocene epoch have been described before in Canada.

The fossil discoveries are also significant because the time when these mammals lived marked the height of prehistoric global warming, a period involving significant reor-

ganization of the world’s plant and animal life.

“We can gain insight into how the Earth was coping with a problem then that’s re-emerging now,’’ said Greenwood, who used fossils to reconstruct the forest setting and climate where the ancient animals lived.

Greenwood is a plant and ancient climate specialist. He called in Prof. Jaelyn Eberle from the University of Colorado and Natalia Rybczynski from the Canadian Museum of Nature to identify the ancient jawbones.

Alberta charges 10 people with 323 poaching charges C anadian Press

EDSON, Alta. — Alberta has charged 10 people in the illegal killing of dozens of wild animals that were shot and left to rot on the ground west of Edmonton.

The Justice Department says the accused face 323 poaching-related charges under the provincial Wildlife Act. The 36 animals that were killed included deer, moose, elk and a black bear.

The carcasses were found last November in the Edson area.

The accused are to appear in Edson provincial court on Aug. 5.

Last fall the Alberta Fish and Game Association called the killings deplorable and said the province needs more wildlife officers and tougher penalties for people convicted of poaching.

Investigators say tips from the public helped them identify suspects.

“Poaching is a significant crime in Alberta and charges like these show how serious we are about protecting our province’s fish and wildlife resources.’’

The accused include Derek Brown, Colton Campbell, Michaela Scott, Devan Dozorec and Tiffany Brown, who together face 204 counts.

The other accused in the case can’t be named because they are either under 18 or were under 18 at the time of the alleged offences.

The Alberta Conservation Association estimates that fewer than 10 per cent of poaching cases in the province are detected.

The top five poached mammals in Alberta are deer, elk, moose, bighorn sheep and bears.

Pennsylvania man’s notice to register for military draft arrives 102 years too late ASSOCIATED PRESS

KENNERDELL, Pa. — A Pennsylvania woman says her late father has received notice to register for the nation’s military draft — some 102 years too late.

Martha Weaver, now in her 80s, tells The Oil City Derrick that the Selective Service System notice arrived Saturday in Rockland Township, Venango County.

That’s about 60 miles north of Pittsburgh.

though the notice misspelled the last name “Minick’’ and warns that failure to register is “punishable by a fine and imprisonment.’’

Her father was born on June 12, 1894, which means he would have turned 18 in 1912.

Weaver suspects the confusion was spawned by the incorrect birth date on the form, which lists the birth year as 1994.

Minnick had died by then, on April 20, 1992.

PAMPLONA, Spain — An American who co-authored the book “Fiesta: How to Survive the Bulls of Pamplona’’ became one of their victims Wednesday when he was one of two men gored at the festival.

Bill Hillmann, a 32-year-old from Chicago and a longtime participant in the nine-day Pamplona street party, was gored twice in the right thigh during one of the daily bull runs, organizers said on their website.

The injury was serious but not life-threatening, the Navarra regional government said in a statement.

A 35-year-old Spaniard man from Valencia was also in serious condition after being gored in the chest during the same run on the festi-

val’s third day, the statement said. He was not named.

Photographs showed Hillmann — dressed in the San Fermin event’s traditional white with a red neckerchief — being gored on the ground by a black bull as other runners scattered.

Tension spiked when the bull became separated from the pack in the final stretch.

British writer Alexander Fiske-Harrison, one of Hillmann’s co-authors of the Pamplona book and a fellow runner Wednesday, said on his blog that the bull turned back and charged at runners.

The six fighting bulls run along a 930-yard (850-meter) course from a holding pen to Pamplona’s bull ring in a tense and dramatic few minutes immortalized in Ernest Hemingway’s 1926 novel “The

DURHAM, N.C. — John Wayne’s heirs are taking Duke University to court to assert the family’s right to market bottles of bourbon branded with the late movie star’s nickname, Duke.

A federal lawsuit filed last week is the latest salvo in a long-running legal duel between the North Carolina university and California-based John Wayne Enterprises over commercial products featuring the name. The late actor used the moniker since childhood, when he adopted the name of the family dog.

TORONTO — An alarming proportion of Ontario teens report that they have texted while behind the wheel of a vehicle, says a survey of Grade 7 to 12 students in the province conducted for the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health.

The 2013 Ontario Student Drug Use and Health Survey found that more than onethird of licensed Ontario students in Grades 10 to 12 — or an estimated 108,000 teens — reported having texted while driving at least once in the past year.

For Grade 12 students alone, 46 per cent of those who drive say they also texted at least once while operating a vehicle.

“This was a big surprise to us,’’ said Robert Mann, a senior scientist at CAMH in Toronto.

WASHINGTON — The movement to impeach U.S. President Barack Obama has had no realistic chance of success, no discernible groundswell of public support, but it now has a celebrity champion.

Step right up, Sarah Palin.

The former vice-presidential candidate has become the first nationally prominent Republican to explicitly call for the impeachment of the commander-in-chief.

Her main rationale: Obama’s failure to secure the border from a flood of illegal Latin American migrants, which Palin appears to suggest might even be part of some insidious plan.

The ex-Alaska governor, bestselling author, and TV host has laid out her case in a letter on a conservative website.

“Enough is enough of the years of abuse from this president. His unsecured border crisis is the last straw that makes the battered wife say, ‘no mas,’’’ said the Palin missive, posted Tuesday on the Breitbart site.

“Without borders, there is no nation.

Obama knows this.

Opening our borders to a flood of illegal immigrants is deliberate. This is his fundamental transformation of America.’’

She concluded with a warning sure to ruffle a few feathers within the Republican party: Either you work to impeach him, or become a target yourself. “It’s time to impeach,’’ Palin wrote. “We

should vehemently oppose any politician on the left or right who would hesitate in voting for (this).’’

No American president has ever been turfed from office as the result of impeachment proceedings. However, more than a century apart, Andrew Johnson and Bill Clinton were both impeached by the House of Representatives before being spared by the Senate.

In the case of Obama, it’s currently inconceivable that the Senate could muster up the necessary two-thirds impeachment votes, whether or not the chamber slips from the Democrats’ control in elections later this year.

If there’s any public clamour for the nuclear option, it’s been well camouflaged. While polls on the subject have been scarce, different surveys last year suggested impeachment had little support among moderate voters.

Calgary police expand investigation to landfill Bill Gr avel and Canadian Press

CALGARY — Calgary police expanded their search for a missing boy and his grandparents to a garbage dump Wednesday, as the man they consider a person of interest in the case learned he could be released from custody as early as Friday.

Police spokeswoman Emma Poole said seven officers were going through the Spyhill Landfill, northwest of the city, looking for evidence in the disappearance of Nathan O’Brien, 5, and his grandparents Alvin and Kathy Liknes.

She said the search is routine in such missing persons cases and it’s expected officers will be checking other landfills in the area as well.

While the search was underway, Douglas Garland appeared in court on identity theft charges unrelated to the missing persons case.

Police say 54-yearold Garland was questioned last weekend in

relation to the disappearance and officers continue to search his parents’ rural property north of Calgary.

He appeared in court via video from the Calgary Remand Centre for what was supposed to be a bail hearing.

But the Crown and defence both agreed Garland could be released with a number of conditions. He first needs to provide a new address for where he would be staying, with the search ongoing at the farm where he had been living.

He is to return to court Friday.

At one point Garland, dressed in a blue jail jumpsuit, leaned in close to the court camera, explaining to the judge that he had bad eyesight.

His lawyer made it clear he is only representing Garland on the charge of identity theft.

“I can only comment today on what was before the court,’’ said Kim Ross. “I’ve only been re-

tained on the charges unrelated to any other investigation that’s going on right now. I have absolutely no knowledge of anything else other than the charges that are before the court here today.’’

Nathan and his grandparents were last seen June 29, following an estate sale at the couple’s home. Police believe a violent incident took place in the home, but have maintained they still hope to find the three alive.

Court records show Garland has a criminal past and mental problems.

In 2000, he was sentenced to 39 months in prison for making amphetamines at his parents’ farm.

When the Parole Board of Canada later gave him accelerated release after six months, it noted in its decision that Garland’s prior criminal record consisted of various property offences over the course of 20 years.

TORONTO — Toronto Mayor Rob Ford refused to explain today why he remained seated while city council gave a standing ovation to organizers of the recent WorldPride festival.

He did not answer questions from reporters outside his office about why he didn’t

stand along with fellow councillors, but said he’s not homophobic.

It’s not the first time Ford has come under fire for an apparent lack of support for the city’s gay community.

Ford has not attended the annual pride parade as mayor — explaining his absence by way of a family tradition

of spending the Canada Day long weekend at the cottage — though he did attend a flag-raising ceremony last year to commence Pride Week.

Earlier this year Ford opposed the raising of a rainbow flag at city hall during the Sochi Winter Olympics as a gesture to protest anti-gay laws in Russia, saying the Olym-

pics are about patriotism, not “sexual preference.’’

Shortly before he left for two months in rehab he made anti-gay and

racist remarks at a bar, in audio obtained by a Toronto newspaper.

When he returned June 30, Ford apologized to those hurt by

his words and actions, saying “I’m ashamed, embarrassed and humiliated.’’

In later interviews with television net-

works, he blamed the disease he was battling, saying it makes you say and do things that aren’t you.

TORONTO — The Canadian team that made an aviation breakthrough last year is trying for a new milestone — the land speed record for a human-powered vehicle.

The Toronto-based team, AeroVelo, is best known for making the first practical human-powered helicopter last year, taking home a $250,000 prize that went unclaimed for 33 years.

Headed by two University of Toronto alumni, the team is currently working on a bicycle that can go faster than the current world record of 133.8 km/h.

“The helicopter was huge in forming our approach here,’’ said Cameron Robertson, one of the team leaders.

“We had a lot of setbacks and we had a lot of unknowns, and that’s really informed a lot of the design choices we have made.’’

Robertson said while the aerodynamics of the vehicle — a recumbent bicycle encased in a slick bullet-shaped shell

— are different from the helicopter, the choices of materials and manufacturing processes are similar.

A vehicle by a Dutch team set the record at the World Human-Powered Speed Challenge last fall. Before that, Sam Whittingham of Quadra Island, B.C., held it for nearly 14 years and the Toronto team is hoping to take it back for Canada at this year’s challenge in September.

The team’s vehicle is dubbed “Eta,’’ the Greek letter widely used in science to denote efficiency, and currently has three test-riders.

Only one will ride it at the record-breaking attempt at Battle Mountain, Nev. Robertson said it will likely be Todd Reichert — the other team leader, who also piloted the helicopter last year — who produces about 10 to 15 per cent more power than the others.

“He has abnormally large legs,’’ Robertson said.

Brian MacIntosh, a kinesiology professor at the University of Calgary, said record break-

ers have been pushing the peak of human fitness over the years, and bigger gains in speed can be made from better machine designs.

He added cycling is still the most efficient way to harness the human body.

Not only does it make use of the powerful leg muscles, it also holds a unique advantage over other propulsion methods.

“In rowing, it’s intermittent. You apply a force, you accelerate forward, and then, during the recovery, you slow down. In skating, it’s the same thing,’’ MacIntosh said.

“In cycling, you can apply force to the cranks almost continuously.’’

The project will cost $120,000 in total, most of which, Robertson said, will come from donations and sponsorship.

The team reached its goal of raising $30,000 through crowdfunding on Tuesday.

A functional vehicle is expected to be completed by the end of the month.

Valid Class 5 Driver’s License.

I’m perfectly content with this, but apparently, the people in my life are not. The truth is, I am not nor have I ever been attracted to either sex. I don’t know whether there is something seriously wrong with me, or whether there is even a name for what I am.

I realized I was different in middle school when all my friends became interested in dating, but I couldn’t care less. I figured it would eventually change, but it never did.

In my senior year in high school, I confessed this to my best friend, who told me I was a freak. I never mentioned it again to anyone.

There is no underlying factor for why I am like I am. I was not abused as a child, and I had a great relationship with my parents and siblings. I can be affectionate, and I enjoy giving hugs to the people I love. I can recognize that someone is attractive, but the idea of being intimate doesn’t appeal to me. I accepted this a long time ago and feel comfortable in my skin.

Over the years when someone tried to fix me up with someone, I always declined or came up with an excuse. Now everyone thinks I’m gay and in the closet.

Let me be clear, I firmly believe your sexual orientation is determined when you’re born.

I also believe my lack of an orientation was also determined at birth. It has nothing to do with being straight or gay.

I seriously have no idea how to deal with this. Should I just stay silent and let them think what they want, or should I try to explain how I feel? Please don’t recommend counseling. I don’t feel abnormal. Not being physically attracted seems normal. -- Conflicted in Kentucky Dear Conflicted: There is a name for this.

You are asexual -- not interested in physical intimacy with either sex. More importantly, there is a support group for you at AVEN at asexuality.org.

Dear Annie: I read your response to “Concerned Old Man in West Hills,” who didn’t understand why his niece was upset when he told her she was fat. You said it was rude to comment on one’s appearance.

Why in hell do you think pointing out that someone is fat is so rude? They are obese, and they are killing themselves. What’s the big deal in saying so? I am 78 years old and weigh the same as I did in high school through effort and sacrifice. Give me a break! -- Not a Rude Guy, Just Honest Dear Not: The fact that something may be true does not make it less rude. Would you say, “My goodness, that’s an ugly baby!” or “You are really unattractive”? It is not OK to disparage someone’s size when they already know they are heavy, and you have no idea whether there are underlying reasons or whether they’ve been working hard on it.

It can be especially galling when someone who never has had a weight problem thinks he knows enough to pass judgment. More importantly, it doesn’t help the other person lose weight, so being rude is simply a form of self-indulgence. Whatever effort and sacrifice you put into maintaining your weight might now be put to good use learning to be kinder.

Dear Annie: My heart broke after reading the letter from “Lonely in Love,” whose husband doesn’t pay any attention to her after three years of marriage.

As someone who has been in the same situation, I thought you gave her good advice.

I’d like to add that she should give herself a timeline for change. Otherwise, she will just be older and lonelier with less self-esteem. -Been There, Suffered That in Ventura, Calif.

COLLINSON, Robert Cecil 1919 - 2014 On the evening of Sunday, July 6, 2014, Robert â&#x20AC;&#x153;Cecilâ&#x20AC;? Collinson passed away peacefully at the F. W. Green Memorial Home in Cranbrook at the age of 95 years. Cecil was born on May 22, 1919 in Guisborough, Yorkshire, England to Robert and Margaret Collinson.

Cecil leaves to cherish his memory his beloved wife of 73 years, Lillian; his daughter Deanna (Frank) and his son Alan (Sharon) as well as three grandsons; Tim (Cheryl), Jamie and Kevin and one granddaughter, Heather. He also leaves behind three great grandchildren; Robbin, Tyrel and Timmy as well as many nieces and nephews.

Cecil was predeceased by his parents, his brother Ben (Pearl) and his twin brother Harold.

STONE, Marion Elizabeth 1925 â&#x20AC;&#x201C; 2014 On the morning of Sunday, June 22, 2014, our amazing and beloved mother, grandmother and great grandmother, Marion Elizabeth Stone passed away at the Kimberley Special Care Home in Kimberley at the age of 88 years â&#x20AC;&#x201C; just two weeks after her beloved husband, Stan. Marion was born in Vancouver, BC on November 13, 1925 to Harry and Winnifred Johnson. She was the youngest of three daughters.

Words are unable to express our great sorrow and loss.

Our mother was truly a 1950â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s mom â&#x20AC;&#x201C; she stayed at home and raised her children with much love and care.

We will always remember her presence in our home as we grew up. Mom will be missed by many.

Hans Kaufmann was born in Teufen, Appenzell on March 12th, 1948. After graduating from forestry school, with nothing but a suitcase and $500 to his name, he ventured across the Atlantic Ocean to Canada. He landed in Manitoba in 1971 where he went to work in the logging camps of the Canadian North. He decided to travel west across Saskatchewan and Alberta, whereupon crossing the Rocky Mountains he realized he had found his home. He settled down in Cranbrook where he worked with Crestbrook Forest Industries which later became Tembec. In 1977 he was joined by Ursula, and they married in 1979, and would go on to raise four children in Wasa. In 1996 he quit his post with Tembec and started his own consulting business, Forsta Contracting. Hansâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; career was always a source of passion and pride and he worked tirelessly to support his family and community.

Hans was involved in many community organizations and activities. He was a devoted member of the Wasa Lionâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Club for which he received several awards over his 34 years of service. Hans was influential in building and developing the Blue Lake Forest Education Society and was an active board member for several years. As a lover of the outdoors, he enjoyed many sports such as soccer and cross-country skiing, and spent much time camping, hiking and hunting in the backcountry.

In 2006, he was diagnosed with Parkinsonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s paired dementia. Despite the numerous challenges he faced, he remained, active, positive, and continued to enjoy life.

Hans Kaufmann passed away at his much-loved home in the mountains, surrounded by his family on Sunday, June 29th, 2014. He is survived by his loving wife Ursula and four children, Andrea, Barbara, Claudia, and Daniel, and grandson, Aiden, and sisters in Switzerland, Ursula and Sylvia. A Celebration Of Life Service for Hans will be held on Sunday, July 13th, 2014 at 2:00 pm at the Wasa Community Hall.
