Fire caused extensive damage to duplex unit; four adults affected

Four adults displaced by a fire which ravaged a duplex Monday evening received support from the Canadian Red Cross.

Sylvan Lake firefighters were called to a fire in a duplex at 16 Westin Place about 8:10 p.m.

Monday and were on the scene for about three hours, reported Fire Chief Cliff Brausen.

With 21 firefighters battling the blaze, they were able to contain the fire to the side of the duplex where it began. There was major interior damage, he reported. The other side of the duplex received significant smoke damage.

Cause of the fire was still under investigation at press time Tuesday afternoon.

“Volunteers with the Canadian Red Cross Personal Disaster Assistance Team provided accommodation to residents impacted by the fire,” according to a press release from the organization.

The team is a group of dedicated volunteers, some from Sylvan Lake, who assist families and individuals with local disasters. The Canadian Red Cross provides food, shelter, clothing and additional services for 72 hours as needed to people affected by personal disaster.

The release stated, the average cost of a response in which a family of four is assisted is $2,000. All Canadian Red Cross support is pro-

vided at no charge to those in need. To donate to this locally funded program call 1-800-418-1111 or go online to www.redcross.ca.

Several Sylvan firefighters were busy earlier Monday morning, responding to a mutual assistance call at Bentley Hutterite Colony with their water tanker. Members were involved in assisting firefighters from Bentley and other areas for about three hours.

About 4,500 pigs died when fire swept through a hog barn. A second barn was saved from fire.

About four dozen firefighters were on the scene at the peak of the action.

Lacombe, Blackfalds and Eckville fire departments also assisted in fighting the fire.

Dear Editor, Every day I ride my bike around town to see if there is anyone outside who would like to hang out with me. I look near playgrounds in the afternoon — nobody is ever out there.

I always go to my friends’ houses but they are never outside. I always knock on their doors but they are too busy playing video games. And I’m sure that I’m not the only kid in Sylvan with the same problem.

During the school year, me and all my friends used to ride our bikes up and down the road. But ever since summer holidays have started, I can never find them.

Whenever I go out, there are no

children in their yards. Just recently I knocked on my friend’s door. He and his brother were playing video games.

I was always told that when good weather comes along, take advantage of it. But whenever I do, nobody is outside.

The huge holiday crowd here for the Dominion Day holiday week-end was favoured with grand weather. A shower during Sunday night and a heavy rain (one-half inch) on Monday night followed two beautiful warm days of bright sunshine.

All the sports that are enjoyed here: golfing, tennis, boating, swimming and fishing were well patronized.

Dancing at Varsity Hall and the Alexander pavilion was enjoyed, and restaurants had an unusually busy weekend. Prior to the holiday the beach was put into nice condition by the village public works department.

There is a steady influx of visitors and it looks as if the Lake is in for a good season. ♦ ♦ ♦ The following pupils recently passed their Toronto Conservatory of Music exams held in Red Deer: Grade X, Betty Pugh; Grade VIII, Barbara Palmer; Grade VI, Shirley Palmer; Grade V, Brenda Hedemark; Grade IV, Helen Pugh. ♦ ♦ ♦

On Wednesday afternoon several members of the Service Club worked on the construction of a kitchen shelter in the trees by the parking lot on the lakeshore.

Construction permits ahead of last year by 23 per cent

Already six months of the year have flown by and for construction starts in Sylvan Lake, there’s been an increase of 23 per cent in value over last year.

The hottest sector appears to be multi-family units where permits have been issued for 83 units compared to just 16 in the same period a year ago.

June’s statistics, released by the town last Wednesday, showed another four units permitted in Windward Place. Others are under construction in Ryders Ridge.

Ten new single family homes were approved for construction, at a total value of $1.977 million. They brought the year-to-date total to 51 new homes started, compared to 56 in the first six months of 2013.

One industrial permit was issued for a shop addition on Industrial Drive, valued at $216,000.

The inspiration of Editor Steve Dills, who carried the project through the year, the column was created to “quantify the generosity of our community with information and a run-

ning tally of donations to various groups and organizations�. The yearend total was close to $500,000 although, we know there were probably donations that were missed.

The award was presented at the association’s annual meeting in Calgary last month.

Third building approved for shopping area at Herder and Hinshaw

During their regular meeting June 16, members of Sylvan Lake’s Municipal Planning Commission: • approved a development permit for Cedo Modo Inc. to construct a third commercial building in the neighbourhood shopping complex at the corner of Herder Drive and Hinshaw Drive where two buildings have already been constructed.

At the same time they approved relocation of a play area for the daycare facility to the centre of the site where a fourth building had previously been planned.

• approved a secondary (basement) suite for a home being built at 83 Reynolds Road.

• approved a subdivision application to create four residential lots on the northwest corner of 52nd Street and 50B Avenue. A demolition permit had previously been issued for buildings at that location.

Subdivision is proposed to allow for side-byside duplexes, stated a report from Matthew Pawlow, planning manager with Parkland Community Planning Services.

Sunday, June 29th 2:15 a.m. – A 21-year-old Sylvan Lake male is facing charges after he refused to leave Chef Francisco Pub and Grill on Lakeshore Drive.

The male was observed by RCMP being escorted out of the bar by a bouncer who advised him not to return. The male refused and the officer eventually arrested the male for public intoxication. The male also refused to provide his real name and was found in possession of, as well as using, another person’s identification. The male is charged with obstructing a police

4:10 a.m. – A RCMP officer on patrol along Lakeshore Drive was flagged down by two females who reported that two males were fighting in the parking lot on Lakeshore Drive at 50A Street. One male was on top of another male punching him several times in the head.

He was arrested and placed in a police vehicle.

The second male was also arrested as he attempted to leave the area. Both were issued fines for fighting in public. One of the males, a 26-year-old Red Deer male, is also charged with failing to comply with a probation order.

Monday, June 30th 1:33 a.m. – RCMP received a call of a disturbance at Lost Harbor Inn in Sylvan Lake. The desk clerk reported that four males were intoxicated and in a room throwing around furniture. The males refused to leave after being requested to do so by hotel staff. Several police officers attended and the males were eventually escorted out of the hotel. There were no charges laid as the room guest offered to pay for any damages.

RCMP NOTES Continued from page 8 Tuesday, July 1st 12:28 a.m. – Police were dispatched to Fireside Lounge on Lakeshore Drive after a 911 call was received of a disturbance at that location. RCMP members were flagged down by a security officer who had performed a citizen’s arrest on a male who was believed to be assaulting a

female. The male was handcuffed yet continued to fight with police. He was subdued and transported to cells. A 22-year-old Sylvan Lake male is charged with assaulting a peace officer, obstructing a peace officer and participating in a fight in a public place. Another male, a 22-year-old resident of Edmonton, is also charged with participating in a fight

in a public place.

12:48 a.m. – Another call was placed to RCMP from Fireside Lounge after an intoxicated male was threatening staff, trying to get his keys. The male also threatened to commit suicide. A 28-yearold Sylvan Lake male was arrested at the scene and was lodged in cells until sober.

3:00 a.m. – A domestic disturbance at

a residence on Parkland Drive in Sylvan Lake resulted in charges against a 37-year-old male. A 28-year-old female advised that she had been assaulted and choked during an altercation. The female did not sustain serious injuries. The male was charged with assault and possession of marijuana over 30 grams.

RCMP NOTES Continued from page 9 Friday, July 4th 7:34 a.m. – RCMP are investigating the theft of a vehicle on Regatta Way in Sylvan Lake. An SUV was stolen

overnight from a residential driveway.

The garage man door was broken into and a purse was stolen containing keys to the vehicle. The vehicle was located a short time later at No Frills

gas station. The driver, a 28-year-old male from Blackfalds, was arrested and is charged with several counts including possession of heroin and cocaine; obstructing a peace officer; and possession of stolen property. Drugs and other stolen property were recovered from the vehicle.

8:53 a.m. – RCMP are investigating a break in to a church on 48th Street in Sylvan Lake. A window at Memorial Presbyterian Church was smashed in the

office area with filing cabinets and desk drawers pried open. It was unclear if anything was stolen.

5:20 p.m. – The theft of a truck on Rogers Road in Sylvan Lake is being investigated by RCMP. A Ford F150 was stolen from outside a residence. The vehicle was unlocked and the keys were believed to be inside the vehicle. Several tools and equipment from the business were also stolen as they were inside the vehicle.

Sylvan Lake martial artists brought home medals SUBMITTED SPECIAL TO SYLVAN LAKE NEWS

A number of martial artists from Arashi-Do Sylvan Lake travelled to Edmonton for the Mind Body Soul Tournament June 22. This is one of the biggest tournaments of the year in Alberta, for BJJ and Muay Thai.

Over 400 competitors took part, from young kids, to the executives (ages 40+). The oldest was aged 56. Of course, having competitors from the school in Sylvan Lake is a great experience and challenge.

Kyle Hebb, 24, competed in the Adult Muay Thai Beginner Division.

Fighting two close fights, he ended up taking third place in that division.

First-time competitor Tokunbo Adeleke competed for the first time in BJJ. After training for about two years, he finally decided to test himself and compete. Fighting in the Executive Division (aged 35+, all experience levels), he started off winning his first match by points.

He then fought a blue belt, Tokunbo being a white belt, and lost by a submission to the eventual second-place

Five Sylvan teams competed in provincial beach volleyball tourney

Five teams from Sylvan Lake competed in Alberta

Beach Volleyball’s 3rd youth tournament at the pier on the weekend.

The weather was absolutely perfect for beach volleyball. With great sponsors, music playing and amazing parents and crowds there to cheer on the athletes, players couldn’t ask for a better atmosphere than right here in Sylvan Lake. Venues in Calgary and Edmonton, which have more courts, just can’t compare to right here at home, at the beach.

For the U18 teams we had Olivia Barnes with Makenna Barthel (of Red Deer) and Harper Elwood with Whitney Lehman (no results forwarded). There were a total of 16 teams in this age group to provide some really good competition. The skill set is really incredible to watch at this age level,

very entertaining beach volleyball.

In the U16 age group, Morgan Lockyer and Erin Matthews played and had some really great games with really close scores but just couldn’t pull off the wins. There were 32 teams in this age group and their tournament was held over both Saturday and Sunday playing at total of six games.

Saturday afternoon was really hot as we watched teams putting on socks, so as not to burn their feet in the sand.

The U14 girls enjoyed the weather and the competition. There were 20 teams entered in the category and the girls gained valuable experience as they competed against quality competition. Hannah Lynn and Daria Kostiuk were teammates, while Kadey Rosie and Laila Watson teamed up. For both

of the Sylvan Lake U14 teams, it was their first beach volleyball competitive experience. The two young teams didn’t fare well in the win column but took a lot away from this weekend, learning the rules, watching other players tendencies and understanding more about their own skills which will help them in future tournaments Good luck to any of the teams registered July 19 and 20th for the fourth youth tournament, again here in Sylvan Lake. The next tournament after that will be provincials in Calgary the August long weekend.

gratulated Kirsten Prelle on her fourth provincial championship. She competed in the Alberta Provincial Outdoor Tennis championship June 28 and 29. Once again, she defeated number-one seed Maya Dukaric in a twohour, three-set final 5-7, 6-1, and 6-3. She heads to Quebec in August to represent Alberta at the Rogers Canadian Junior Nationals.

Benalto Pro Rodeo a success in its 97th year

Benalto Pro Rodeo is showing no signs of slowing down, despite now heading into its 98th year.

With co-operative weather, a strong attendance and plenty of help from volunteers, this year’s 97th, which ran on the weekend, couldn’t have gone any better, according to rodeo manager John Bystrom.

“Weather is always the first thing,” he said.

“If the weather co-operates, people come.”

Although final attendance numbers hadn’t been tallied at press time, Bystrom estimated them to be the event’s highest ever.

Entry numbers were also strong, and on par with previous years.

The rodeo weekend kicked off with the junior rodeo Friday, and ended Sunday afternoon.

there’s no reason why it can’t continue for years to come, Bystrom feels. “(Volunteers are) the driving force behind any event like this,” he said. “We’ve got a really good group of people that work well together, and the dedication of volunteers is very apparent.”

Ensuring the rodeo remains fun for those volunteers is key to ensuring its continued longevity,

he added.

“If it’s not fun for your volunteers to put on, it’s not worth doing. We’ve made it fun, and we still put on a quality rodeo.”

NIEMELA On July 2, 2014 Ray (Aarne Raymond) Niemela passed away at the age of 94 years old.

Ray is survived by his daughter, Dorinda (Ernie) Beskowiney and son, Terry (Marilyn) Niemela. He also leaves behind his grandchildren: Bonnie (Nick) Parker, Trevor (Margot) Hietala, KarriLynn (Lance) Knudsen, Tracy (Duane) Guthrie, LeeAnn (Darren) Low, Kimberley (Martijn) Appel, AuKeeRa (Aaron) Low and stepgrandchildren: Shawn (Kristie) Beskowiney, and Melonie Beskowiney. He also leaves several great-grandchildren and many close family and friends. One of Ray’s greatest joys in life was spending time with his family and friends. He looked forward to the conversations and many visits while sharing his “happy juice”. His inspiring and generous soul had a way of lifting the spirits of anyone he met. Ray always had a zest or life and a love for farming. Ray took great pride in the family farm. He enjoyed hearing about the every day operations and took joy in watching the farm continue to grow. One of Ray’s greatest accomplishments in life was to see all of his grandchildren get married and to see his greatgrandchildren take their first step. He loved sharing with them his charm, humour, laughter and stories on how to live a long, happy life. Ray enjoyed travelling to many places across the world where he gained several dear friends. In the early years, while spending time with Edith as “Snow Birds” in Arizona, Ray and Edie met life-long friends, Norman and Violet Jones. After the passing of Edith and Norman, Ray and Violet married and decided to live the rest of their lives together. Ray adopted his “American” family and cherished many special memories with them. Ray will be deeply and sadly missed by all the lives that he touched. His legacy will remain in our hearts forever. Funeral services will be held at the Eckville Community Center on July 16th, 2014 at 11am. A private family internment will follow at Alto Rest Memorial Gardens Red Deer. If friends desire, memorial contributions may be made to Camp Kannawin, Box 9240, Sylvan Lake, Alberta T4S 1S8.

GOMES-KANANEN Jennifer Lake Gomes-Kananen, age 26, of Eckville, AB passed away on July 1,2014. She was born in Edmonton, AB on September 19,1987, daughter of Stephanie Kananen of Eckville, AB, and Nelson Gomes of Edmonton, AB. Jennifer along with her mother and brothers moved to Eckville area in March of 1999.

She attended Eckville High School and graduated in the year 2005. She was a gorgeous and intelligent young woman whose loving spirit touched many lives. Jennifer will be lovingly remembered by her mother Stephanie Kananen, father Nelson Gomes and Grandma Teresa Gomes. Her siblings: Ryan Gomes (Desiree), Evan Gomes, Tyler Gomes (Heather), Jessica Severeriano Hurley (Philip), Christopher Gomes and Kyle Gomes. Along with her nephews and niece: Graeson Gomes (Ryan), Harlek Gomes (Tyler), Camryn Hurley and Maia Severiano (Jessica) and Jadon Hunt (Christopher). As well as Great Uncles and Great Aunts; Sharon Gerber (Fred), Donna Hallam (Bob), Fatima Cordeiro (Fernando), Rita Nunez (Jack), Celeste Viera (John) and numerous cousins. Balanced Market Sales in June in Sylvan Lake came back down to normal while the number of active listings increased, bringing the market back into balance from one where sellers briefly had the advantage.

The sales to listing ratio at 23.4% is probably closer to 30% when considering just the Town of Sylvan Lake.

Our calculations include the summer villages around the lake where sales are slower for the higher priced homes there.

The price range that has been the most active ($250,000 – $350,000) actually slowed a little in June while the number of listings increased, providing an

opportunity for buyers in that price range. The $350,000 – $450,000 price range is the one where sellers may still have a bit of an advantage.

The strong market we have experienced this year is the result of a strong economy that creates lots of jobs and encourages migration from the rest of Canada and the world. Population growth creates demand for new construction which is in itself an economic driver. In 2013 Alberta’s population grew by 3.25%, the fastest in Canada by double.
