Beach Events Planned for July and August

Since 1982 the Parksville Beach and Community Park have played host to sand sculpting, a proud tradition the Parksville Beach Festival Society will continue with an impressive array of events from mid-July to mid-August. Attracting more than 93,000 people in 2013, The 2014 Quality Foods Canadian Open Sand Sculpting Competition opening weekend takes place July 12 and 13 with the amazing works staying up as an exhibition until August 17. Master sculptors from Latvia, the Netherlands, México and all over the U.S. and Canada are coming to this year’s competition. Working within a musical theme, the world-class sculptors will have 24 hours over three days to create their masterpieces from nothing but sand and water, competing for a guaranteed spot and trip to the world championships. The public can witness the architecture and creativity as the sculptors prepare their bases on Friday, July 11 and carve on Saturday and Sunday. The official opening begins at 2 p.m. Saturday, July 12 with a ribbon cutting, and people can watch the work close up until they finish their masterpieces by 3 p.m. Sunday. After judging the winners will be announced at 5:30 p.m. and the gate will remain open until 9 p.m. Throughout the exhibition Thursday, July 10, 2014

the fenced off works of art are open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily for a suggested donation of $2.50 per person. Event manager Trish Smith said they hope to break the 100,000 person milestone this year as attendance has risen steadily year after year. Attendance depends quite a bit on the weather, she points out, but organizers are continuing to provide more entertainment and other draws throughout the event to give people more to do while they’re there and more reason to return for something new every week. New this year is a singing competition called Parksville Idol sponsored by the City of Parksville and the PQB News. The Parksville Beach Festival Society wanted to add an event that tied in with the ‘musical’ sand sculpting theme and that also piggy backed on the popular reality TV shows, American and Canadian Idol. Parksville Idol will be similar to the reality TV series in that the public will be able to vote for their favourite singers and select the Semi-finalists that will perform LIVE at the beach on Aug 9. This will be done via the PQB News’ online voting platform. The Finalists in each of 3 categories will be selected by 3 industry judges and will perform LIVE just prior to the fireworks on Aug 9. Applications are being accepted from July 1-21 with voting continuing until

Popular returning events include the Coastal Community drop-in lessons with professionals on the opening weekend July 12 and 13 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. People can stop by for 10 minutes to learn some sand sculpting tips or spend the entire weekend practicing their skills. Professional sculptors from the World Champion team “The Sandboxers” will be offering demonstrations and lessons, as well as working with the public one on one. Art in the Park will return to the Parksville Community Park on Sunday, July 27. The annual craft fair is sponsored by The Beach Club Resort and has 75 juried artisans of all types to ensure a wide array of art and craft styles from all over Vancouver Island and the Gulf Islands. The event draws over 5,000 people to shop for unique jewelry, clothing and art, ranging from stained glass and paintings to metal art and photography. There will also be food vendors and musical entertainment. The event takes place in the gardens around the tennis courts from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Summer Sounds of the Island Summer Concert Series will run from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. every Friday and Saturday night from July 18-Aug 16. There will be a variety of talent featuring various musical genres - pop, folk, rock, swing, country and blues. Other events during the exhibition include Sunset Cinema Free Outdoor Movie (July 11), the Lions International Kite Festival (July 19-20), the Van Isle Shriners Show & Shine Car Show (Aug. 3), The Quality Foods Festival of Lights Fireworks display (Aug 9), KidFest and the Quality Foods Children’s Sandcastle Competition (Aug.10) and the Summer by the Sea Street Market every Tuesday from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. up the hill on Craig Street. Answers to Frequently Asked Questions Do we use special sand? Yes! The regular beach sand can’t be used as it contains bits of shell and pebbles that might create faults in the sculptures. This could shorten the lifespan of the sculpture, or cause it to crumble before it is judged! The Parksville Beach Festival Society purchases fine, sifted sand from Ozero Sand & Gravel that contains a fair amount of silt to help bind the sand particles.

How much sand do the competitors receive?

Each soloist receives 10 yards of sand on a 12x15’ plot and the doubles get 15 yards and a 20x20 plot. The sculptors can use the sand within the plot and water, nothing more. All of the sand must be utilized in the creation of their artwork. There is no sweeping any leftovers out of the plot or under the mat!

What keeps the sculpture together?

The sand is compressed together in wooden forms to remove most of the air. The less air, the stronger the bond. After the sculptures are completed, they are sprayed with a diluted mixture of 20 percent environmentally-friendly white glue and 80 percent water. This forms a protective barrier on the outside of the sculpture that prevents the wind and sun Thursday, July 10, 2014

from blowing away the detail. The wind screen is not mixed with the sand. It is not intended to hold the sculpture together, only to prevent erosion.

How do they build the sculptures so high? The sculptors build wooden or plastic forms and stack them on top of each other. They remove the forms and carve from the top down.

How long do the competitors have to finish the competition? In our competition, each soloist or double has a total of 24 hours over 3 days to completely carve all the sand in their plot.

What are the wires sticking out of the tops of the sculptures? It is a deterrent from large birds that might otherwise perch on top of the sculptures causing damage.

How does someone become a professional sand sculptor? It takes passion, drive, skill, a willingness to learn new things, and a little luck! There are competitions all over the world and if you become good enough, you can compete at one of these competitions or get

hired to create sand sculptures for a living. The QF Canadian Open is for Master Sand Sculptors only, as the sculptors are hoping for a chance to advance to the World Championships. However, there are other regional competitions that amateurs can attend. Locals can learn how the professionals do it at the Coastal Community Sculpting Zone on July 12 and 13. Coastal Community Credit Union has sponsored 2 professional sculptors from the 10 time world championship team ‘The Sandboxers’ who will be giving free lessons every half hour and doing demonstrations between 10am - 6 pm.

How long will the sand sculptures last? There are many factors that determine the life span of one of these amazing creations. Construction, compaction and the overall design will play a large part, as will Mother Nature. A well thought out design with excellent compaction and construction can last for months even in the harshest of weather conditions. On the other hand a poorly designed or compacted structure or one that has stretched the limits of the sand itself may not survive for more than a few minutes or hours. The Quality Foods Canadian Open Sand Sculpting Exhibition will last for five weeks, until August 17.

Sculpting Competitors come to Parksville Quality Foods Canadian Open Sand Sculpting Competition and Exhibition event manager Trish Smith said the sculptors love to come to Parksville, not only for the competition and chance at the world championships, but because of the city and the way they’re treated while here. “We take good care of them. We pay for their travel and accommodations, give them a $1000 stipend just to take part, and then there’s the prize money,” she said. The cash prizes this year total $25,000 – 5000 to the winning double and 2500 to the top individual. The top 3 doubles receive prize money as do the top 5 soloists. There is also a People’s Choice cash award given out at the end of the exhibition for the most votes each Double and Solo receives. The organizers also drive the sculptors around, feed them and leave them with nothing to worry about but their craft. In order to find the sculptors the Parksville Beach Festival sends out an open invitation to anyone who has expressed interest in coming, as well as to all of the sculptors who have participated in past years. They also notify other sand sculpting competition organizers to help spread the word that Parksville is looking for applicants. “We allow Thursday, July 10, 2014

Bert Adams, Vancouver, WA

Bert first got involved in sand sculpting when he entered a contest in Carmel, CA. He had a blast and won 1st place. After that he started entering contests in Northern CA and eventually started organizing them. He is mostly a Sand Contest Organizer now, who LOVES to carve at a contest he doesn’t have to organize. Bert’s rumored to have brought more people into Masters level sand sculpture than anyone out there. His life goal is to make Sand Sculpture the next Intra-Mural High School Sport. It would be great to see the Art Team come home with a trophy and put it next to the Football team.

Bruce Waugh, Langley, BC

for over 25 years and still loves the attention that it gets him. Bruce has placed in the top five or won the People’s Choice award at the Parksville competition in 2008, 2009 and 2010. Last year he placed 1st at the Texas Sand Fest in the Doubles category. The most challenging thing he finds is coming up with a fresh idea that no one has seen before, and is difficult to carve. Always pushing the envelope can be frustrating but rewarding after your creation is complete and still standing!

Craig Mutch, Vancouver, BC

Craig is an artist who wears many hats, some of which include sand sculpture, ice, snow and wood carving as well as professional photography for over twenty five years. Originally an Illustrator and Graphic Designer from Edmonton, Alberta, Craig changed his career goals and set out to the West Coast in search of broader horizons. From there he boarded the cruise ship industry and worked for many years as a lab manager/photographer/artist. He now resides in Vancouver, BC, and travels around the world producing private works for large shopping malls and special event productions. You may have seen Craig carving the sand sculpture in Woodgrove Mall a few weeks ago. Craig’s motto is “Follow your inner artist and pursue your personal dreams”.

Delayne Corbett, Vancouver, BC

Delayne was born in Nelson, BC and was raised all across Canada. The abundant nature and raw materials like wood, stone, ice, snow and sand guided him onto a creative path. He began sculpting at the age of nineteen when he was terribly bored. His life changed the instant he picked up a hammer, a screwdriver, and a piece of wood and pounded out an incense holder. A purchase of a small soapstone rock and a few rudimentary tools blossomed into a full time passion. Smashing stones with a hammer and chisel gave him an emotional and physical release and has allowed for personal spiritual healing and growth. Delayne is now an internationally recognized ice, snow, and sand artist, and often travels abroad to work on large projects. His sculpting career flows in seasons. In the spring and fall he concentrates on stone. In winter he carves ice and snow, and the summer he travels around creating sand monuments between his masonry jobs.

Eric Hawley, Tacoma, WA

Eric is a 45-year old elevator mechanic with a mad fetish for sand sculpture. He discovered this art form 7 yrs. ago while visiting Harrison Hot Springs. Since then he has participated in several sand events in the United States and Canada, winning awards in advanced amateur competitions, solo, double, and team events. The QF Canadian Open Sand Sculpting Competition in Parksville will be his first professional competition! Fred Dobbs, Victoria, BC

Fred began sand sculpting at the tender age of 5 on a beach near Dublin, Ireland. Buried waist deep in sand, Fred was to become part of a sand collaboration where he and his Father crafted a convertible sand car, with Fred in the driver’s seat creating the steering wheel and dashboard, and his Father fashioning the body on the outside. Fred has won titles in Canada, the US Open, and the World Championship of sand sculpting. In 1993, in collaboration with Team ‘Totally in Sand’, Freddie and the Sandblasters were recognized in the Guinness Book of records for the tallest sand sculpture. Fred now balances his sand sculpting career with his fine art projects in bronze, public art works, architectural and furniture details, as well as private commissions. His most recent sand sculpting projects have been in Kuwait and South Korea.

Fred Mallet, Corpus Christi, Texas

Seeing a large sand sculpture in progress on the beach in South Padre Island Texas gave Fred the bug, and sculpting sand quickly became a passion. Fred has been competing in Masters level sand sculpture events since 2002. He has competed in 74 masters level competitions and placed in 37 of them. In 2012 he reduced his contest appearances and has gone nearly full-time as a professional Sand Sculptor, creating marketing opportunities for his customers around the globe. He is also the owner of a Computer Education company that provides classes for teaching engineers to write computer programs to analyze massive amounts of data.

Helena Bangert, Amsterdam, the Netherlands

Helena studied at the Rietveld Art Academy in Amsterdam and graduated in 1998 with a major in sculpting and installation art. The thought of using sand as a medium came when she was invited to make a sculpture for an exhibition at a retirement home for elderly seamen in a small Dutch coastal village. Gradually sand sculpting has become one of her main activities. She now designs and carves sand sculptures commercially around the world and has also added ice and snow sculpting to her activities.

Jeff Strong, Tacoma, WA

Sand sculpting is an avocation for Jeff, whose main profession is computer programming for the University of Puget Sound. He got involved with sand sculpting 14 years ago when he met Master sculptor Bert Adams. After pestering Bert with a million questions, Bert invited Jeff to help him with a sculpture project. Jeff likes the improbable magic of sand sculpture, and his compositions often incorporate open space and emphasize artistic form. His solo sculpture of a dragon arching its neck to devour a sand sculptor went viral on the Internet, and can still be seen when searching Google for “Sand Sculpture”. the World Championships of Sand Sculpture for his thin, gravity-defying lattice work framed within a swirling arch. Sculpting only on vacation from his full-time computer work, Jeff says that his main challenge is keeping up with the many talented full-time artists on the beach. A challenge, he adds, that is a lot of fun!

Jo Hollick, Vancouver, BC Jo was raised in White Rock near one of the best sandcastle-building beaches ever! On her 30th birthday, she and her mom went to play on the beach and she had so much fun she decided to take it up as a hobby. Jo loves how you can become so absorbed in the carving process you forget about the world around you. It’s so much fun turning a pile of sand and water into art… she finds it magical! Jo has now been carving for 14 years and also teaches others how to carve sand. Recently Jo had a baby and is currently learning all sorts of new things about herself as an Artist and a Mother.

Justin Gordon, Groveland, Massachusetts Justin has been sculpting for over 39 years. Karen Fralich, Burlington, ON

Karen has been creating sand sculptures for 20 years. She began her sculpting career at age 14 in a pottery studio in Guelph, Ontario in 1983. In 1994, a professional sand sculptor invited her to help him on a small sand sculpture in a local mall. Karen was immediately addicted and spent the next 4 years learning the rudiments of sand sculpture while still working full time in restaurants, clothing sales and mascot costume construction. In 1998 she entered her first international contest and by 2001 she was working full time as a free-lance sculptor. Her work takes her around the world, collaborating with her large extended family of wonderful sculptor friends. To date, Karen has competed in 105 Masters Level International sand sculpture contests. She is a 5 time World Champion and 5 time North American Champion. She is the only woman to ever win the Solo World Championships.

Morgan Rudluff, Davenport, CA

Morgan is a born an’ raised California girl. She likes beaches, flowers, avocados, fruit, and bare feet. In 2007, after dropping out of college, Morgan stumbled into sand sculpting (or it could also easily be said that sand sculpting stumbled into her.) It was an immediate love affair, and though not always career-monogamous, sand sculpting was to have her heart until this current day. Like many sand sculptors, this profession has taken her around the world, in front of television cameras, and deep into the caverns of dream-like circumstance. She considers herself to be quite fortunate and rich in many ways that are hard to quantify. There have been medals won and there have been articles of success written; however, there have also been many long days, many callouses, and many sunburns to float it all along. Artistically, Morgan pursues snow and ice sculpting, clothing and costume design/construction, creative writing, scrap paper doodling, street theater, global backpacking, and martini-infused philosophizing. Morgan is currently learning to play the ukulele. Some days her patience is better than others, but all days are wonderful if you swaddle them in gratitude and then throw them off a cliff.

Peter Vogelaar, Winlaw, BC

Peter has been sand sculpting since 2002. With team mate David Ducharme, he won first at the Worlds in 2003, and also in 2006 in the team category. Peter and David are also the reigning Olympic Snow sculpture champions, having won First and People’s choice the last time that snow sculpture was included in the Winter Olympics, in Torino, Italy. Peter’s sculptures have placed First in Parksville in 2006-2009 and 2013. Peter loves the spontaneity of sand sculpting and the camaraderie of the artists, attending events is much like a family reunion. Continued on Page 11

Sandis Kondrats, Latvia

Sandis is a world traveler, sculptor and entrepreneur. He has studied art for more than seventeen years and holds a Masters in Arts degree in Humanities: Fine Arts and Visual Plastic Art (Sculpture) from the Art Academy of Latvia. After graduation he became CEO of a company called “Frostiart Baltic”, artistic and technical director of numerous sculpting festivals in Europe and a sculptor in many contests, festivals and exhibitions around the world. Sandis is a ten-time champion of sand and ice sculpting international competitions in the USA, Europe and China and has been an artist in over 150 international group exhibitions, symposiums, festivals and competitions. Who would have believed that what started as an amateur beach competition at age 18 in the mid 1980’s would turn into so much more? Since 1990 Andy has been a team member of Freddie & The Sandblasters and his current Victoria team The Sandboxers to capture top spots in the Canadian Championships, BC championships, US Open & World Championships. Not content solely with competitions, Andy has participated in setting several Guinness Book of Record qualifications - for the tallest man-made 100 manhour sculpture and the tallest man-made indoor piece. this Financial Comptroller spends most of his holiday time building elaborate displays around the world. Andy’s team mate Ken has been sculpting with him on the Victoria based Sandboxers team for a number of years. The Sand Boxers are one of the longest running sand sculpting teams in the world. They competed for ten years, winning the Quality Foods Canadian Open title many times, and in 2004 they won their first World Championship gold plus Best Architecture and People’s Choice. The Sand Boxers have since gone on to win four World Championship gold medals.

Arianne van Rosmalen & Marielle Heessels, The Netherlands Marielle and Arianne met each other on a sand sculpting project in 2006. Together with three other ladies they started a women’s sand sculpting team The Macha’s. They have competed several times at the World championships, placing first in 2010! Arianne has been carving for almost 10 years. During the year she works on international sand sculpting festivals as well as smaller projects, which she organizes herself. She enjoys having a profession where her experience and ambition continually grows. Marielle started sand sculpting in 2006 and has since worked as a sculptor and painter for amusement parks and museums. She loves working with sand as a material because it provides the opportunity to work quickly on a large scale while constantly learning and growing as a sculptor. Charlotte Kolff & Damon Langlois, Victoria, BC

Charlotte and Damon are a couple and fell in love competing against each other as sand sculptors. Damon is from Mars and Charlotte is from Venus but really she is from Holland and he is from Canada. In 2007, at the World Championships in Harrison Hot Springs, Damon’s Team “The SandBoxers” won first place and beat Charlotte’s team “The Macha’s” who placed third. This obviously impressed her so much she decided that Damon was her man. Over the next little while they decided to team together to make something more permanent, a little boy named Roan whose middle name is Harrison! They usually sculpt together as a family and can be seen in the summer carving at Gonzales beach in Victoria. This is their second year competing as a doubles team in Parksville. Last year they won third place with the sculpture titled “Fallen”.

David Kaube & Mike Rebar, Parksville, BC

David started his artistic career painting ceramic animals with his mother then moved on to oil painting and acrylics. In 1987 he started sand sculpting on Parksville Beach in the Intermediate team division with the Wazoo Warriors. He was hooked and competed every year in Parksville until 1997. David continues to sculpt and also build custom cabinets. In 2004 he won the solo title at the QF Canadian Open Sand Sculpting Competition. In 2010 he joined Parksville’s

Cutting Edge sand sculpting team and has partnered with one of his team mates, Mike Rebar, to enter the Doubles category. Mike competed at the QF Canadian Open Sand Sculpting Competition from 2009 until 2012 with Parksville’s Cutting Edge team. He is regularly asked to teach sand sculpting workshops and this year will be holding the first demonstration sand sculpture at Ladysmith Days. Mike is a professional sculptor who sculpts local granite and marble that he harvests on Vancouver Island. Mike is well known for his sculptures which reflect a west coast theme and are in private collections all over North America. Visitors are welcome at Mike’s studio and gallery located at his home just off of highway 19A outside of Parksville.

For years they waited, waited to be beaten. Finally, giving up on the possibility that the prophecy of ‘The Duo’ would come true, Marianne & Chris gave up on life and retreated to a cave built of depression and despair. Brett Stocker & Walter McDonald, San Jose del Cabo, México & South Padre Island, TX Born in Kenya, East Africa, Brett lives in México and owns The Minimountain Resort at Rancho de la Sierra private estate. won the People’s Choice Award with his Cinderella’s Castle sculpture! Amazin’ Walter has won many medals, trophies and cash awards for his competition sculptures. He builds castles of sand so it was inevitable that he would team with Brett Stocker, another builder of castles of sand. Can you hear the music? In 2013 they joined forces to create sculptures at the World Championship event in Atlantic City, NJ and at the American Championship at Ft Myers Beach, Fl. They were the winners of the 3rd place medal and the People’s Choice Award at the American Championships.

Mélineige & Guy Beauregard, Québec Some believe sand sculpting is art, some believe it’s a sport, while others, like Mélineige, believe it’s a spiritual experience. “When my hands touch the material, when my heart opens to give life, when my head is illuminated by light, I become the co-creator of the universe,” she said. “An artist is one who spiritualizes matter.” She should know. Art is in her blood. Her father is internationally renowned sculptor Guy Beauregard, and like her father, she too has achieved international success. In fact, in 2004 the father-daughter duo teamed to win the World Championships in the doubles category. Since then she has won several individual awards and in 2013 she was the Grand Champion of the first All Woman World Championships of Sand Sculpting in Florida. “For me, art is a means of communication, a way to transmit the energy of life, to affirm its vastness and its beauty.” Thursday, July 10, 2014

Volunteers make sculpting competition go While a lot of work goes into an event the size of Parksville's Annual Quality Foods Canadian Open Sand Sculpting Competition & Exhibition, event manager Trish Smith says the event always has a lot of support from the community. The Society is greatly appreciative of the significant support received annually from local businesses through cash and inkind sponsorships, and over 300 volunteers assist throughout the summer with set up and tear down, Lunch with the Castles, Beach Fest special events, selling souvenirs, and greeting visitors at the entrance to the sand sculpting site. Each year non-profit groups can apply to help out at the entrance gate in exchange for a share in the donations collected. Selecting which groups to use is troublesome as there are so many incredible organizations that do such wonderful work in the community. They try to select philanthropic groups based on financial need and how they give back to the local community. Last year 16 participating non-profit organizations shared $46,750 in donations, making it the biggest source of

income for some of these groups, which are expected to provide six volunteers for each of about seven shifts and attend a volunteer orientation. Judging the best sand sculptures The judges look for a wide variety of things when judging the work of the internationally renowned sand sculptors. They look for an overall "wow factor," based on general impressions, whether funny, clever, or unusual carving techniques, as well as more nuanced and detailed factors. They look at overall sand use, did they use all the sand provided? — as well as artistic merit, consistency, accurate proportions, illusion of movement, expres-

sive faces and details. They judge the general balance of the design along with the use of shapes, shadows, originality, creativity and a consistent theme. Judges also look at technical difficulty, scrutinizing the use of impossible looking overhangs, cut-throughs, height, hollowing out, arches and delicate narrow elements, along with the sculptor's general control of the sand. Lions International Kite Festival

Kite enthusiasts from far and wide will gather in Parksville Community Park, July 19 and 20 for the Parksville Lions International Kite Festival. The park will be full of food concessions, vendors and a wide variety of kite experts teaching people how to build and fly kites of all descriptions. Quality Foods Children’s Sandcastle Competition

Sunday morning registration for the Quality Foods Children’s Sandcastle Competition on the beach starts at 9:30 a.m. and the building starts at exactly 11 a.m. The event is free but children must be registered by 10:30 a.m. The oldest in each group determines the age category (6 & under, 7 to 9 or 10 to 12), with up to four per team. The strict number one rule is listed as “all teams must have fun.” They will have 30 to 90 minutes, depending on age, and there are many great prizes along with goody bags for everyone.

Coastal Community Sculpting

Lessons July 12/13 from 10 am – 6 pm In addition to the amazing solos and doubles competition, the public will have an opportunity to learn the sand sculpting techniques used by the pros. Coastal

Community Credit Union has sponsored two professional sculptors to work with the public and teach them how to create a ‘proper’ sand sculpture from scratch. Mike Hearst and Phil Olson will be offering demonstrations and providing lessons between 10 am-6 pm July 12 and 13.

Art in the Park July 27 from 10 am – 4 pm

There will be artisans selling their home-made paintings, sculptures, pottery, photographs, beach art, children’s clothing, jewellery, stained glass, bath bombs, etc. Along with food vendors and musical entertainment.

Parksville Idol

In celebration of this summer’s Quality Foods Canadian Open Sand Sculpting ‘Musical’ sand sculpting theme, the Parksville Beach Festival will be hosting a fun and exciting event called Parksville Idol. Co-sponsored by the City of Parksville and The Parksville Qualicum Beach News, the event will include a People’s Choice online voting format to determine the semi-finalists in each age division to perform live on August 9, as well as a finals round where the top 2 in each category will perform just prior to the fireworks on August 9. Contestants can enter the Parksville Idol voice competition by completing an entry form at www.parksvillebeachfest.ca. — News Staff
