Gran Fondo has Kimberley component Riders will be coming right through the Platzl C AROLYN GR ANT Bulletin Editor
The second annual Kootenay Rockies Gran Fondo bike race is set for September 7, 2014. And this year, riders of all three race distances will be making their way through Kimberley’s Platzl. The inaugural Gran Fondo last year drew rave reviews from riders. One and all hailed the spectacular scenery, organization and volunteers. It was decided this year that the race could be made even better taking the route, which begins at St. Eugene, loops up to Wasa and back to the resort, through Kimberley’s Platzl, says Glenn Dobie of the Cranbrook Sunrise Rotary Club, under whose aegis the
event runs. “For 2014 all Fondo cyclists (Piccolo, Medio and Gran) will be riding through the Kimberley Platzl which will serve as the location of the First Rider Aid “Fully Stocked’ Aid Station (Power Bars, Gatorade, Water, Fresh Fruit, Cookies, Muffins etc.),” Dobie said. “The Platzl part of the Fondo will be organized and manned by the Kimberley Rotary Club with support from the Mark Creek Lions Club in conjunction with the Gran Fondo organizing committee from the Cranbrook Sunrise Rotary Club. The goal is to create a festive atmosphere for the cyclists, showcase the Platzl and Kimberley to benefit the local businesses.” Part of the Gran Fondo race proceeds will go to the Kimberley Rotary Club and Mark Creek Lions for their community service club.
