BC Hydro not playing fair: MLA

The owners of the Bell 2 Lodge are asking BC Hydro to reconsider after being told it will cost them millions of dollars to draw power from the Northwest Transmission Line, which runs within 300 metres of their business.

Not only that, but partner Mike Watling said they were told the amount must be paid upfront, unlike the arrangement the utility company has with larger industry who is tapping into the line.

“We’ve known about the NTL for a long time and we tried to wait for the right opportunity to get in there and find out about

how feasible it is to hook up to it,” Watling said. “[BC Hydro] told us it was going to cost $3 million and come talk to them when we were ready to do something.

“I don’t even think it’s reasonable to suggest that.”

The year-round tourism business employs 65 people during high season and generates about $10 million in revenue annually.

In the winter, the Bell 2 Lodge is the jumping-off point for Last Frontier Heliskiing.

During the summer months, there is a restaurant, gas station and accommodation for travellers along the Stewart-Cassiar Highway.

Telkwa proposes hazmat centre

The Village of Telkwa is spearheading a project that could bring a hazmat centre to Prince George, but according to one councillor, it has been years in the making and is still a long way off.

The incident in Quebec in 2013, in which a 72-oil tanker car train derailed in Lac-Mégantic and exploded and killed dozens of people, has prompted communities in the Bulkley Valley to reassess their ability to deal with major spills of hazardous materials.

“What this piece is all about is the response capabilities when an incident happens, and more specifically when a major incident to

They hope to establish a regional hazmat response centre in Prince George that will be equipped and staffed to provide timely response capabilities to communities within the Regional District of Bulkley-Nechako.

According to

Zitkauskas, CN Rail’s emergency response plan assumes that local first responders would provide the initial response to a major hazmat incident.

However, most nearby towns in the Bulkley Valley have volunteer firefighters who don’t have the appropriate equipment and training to deal with

such spills.

“We want to let the federal government and Department of Transportation know that in our region, that assumed capacity to participate in CN’s plan is not there,” said Zitkauskas. “Larger municipalities have the capacity to provide training and equip their firefighters with the proper supplies.”

Zitkauskas said

CN does have a worker located in Terrace who would be responsible for assessing the situation in the event of a minor hazardous spill.

But the closest depot equipped to deal with a major hazardous spill is located more than 1,000 kilometres away in Calgary.

“We believe that that timeline between the actual incident happening and when people are on the ground that know how to deal with it is too long,” he said. “It wouldn’t be acceptable within major Canadian centres, so why should it be acceptable in more rural parts of Canada?”

Nathan Cullen, MP for Skeena-Bulkley Valley, said the federal government and shippers need to take more responsibility.

Society gets ball rolling on field upgrades

The Bulkley Valley Soccer Society is getting the ball rolling on a much-needed facelift to Chandler Park fields.

Colin Bateman, president of the society, made a presentation to Smithers town council Tuesday night to make major changes to the two fields.

“They need an overhaul to get them to a standard that will enable our kids to compete,” said Bateman. “We want to make sure that Chandler Field becomes more of a priority to get repaired.”

The upgrades will include digging up the track and putting new soil in to even out the pitch to make it one flat surface; adding a third pitch so the fields don’t get overused, and improving the fields’ irrigation system, as

there is currently only one field that is being properly irrigated.

“They’re in pretty poor condition. If you walk into the central soccer pitch, it’s all chewed up and there’s gravel all over it,” Bateman explained, noting that the fields are overgrown with weeds.

“People, when they’re playing soccer, try to avoid certain areas of the pitch.”

According to Bateman, the poor condition of the fields is a growing issue and has caused injuries.

“There are a lot of injures that are happening like twisted ankles,” he said. “The adults play for awhile and in the end they have to stop playing because there are too many injuries. You walk all over the field and there are lots of dips it in.”

Smithers Coun.

Charlie Northrup thinks it’s the responsibility of the

society.

“I think the onus will be for the [society] to take the lead and us to support that leadership,” he said.

Steve Williams, whose 15-year-old son plays youth soccer, is volunteering his time to survey the soccer fields.

“It will give them a sense of all the humps and bumps in the fields so they know when they go to fill over top, they’ll get a sense of just how much work, how much fill needs to be brought in to make a level playing field,” he said.

Williams added he ran into players while surveying who were happy about the potential upgrades.

“They were quite excited when I told them and that they might be an improved field here soon,” he said.

Though Bateman admitted he doesn’t know the total cost of the upgrades, he

Bateman said the improved condition of the fields will also allow the town to host soccer tournaments, something they couldn’t do as often before.

“In Smithers, we have the ability to pull people from Prince Rupert and Prince George but we just don’t have the fields to host these tournaments,” he said.

“The BV Soccer society and BC Soccer said they would hope they can get tournaments here but at the moment, we just don’t have the fields. . . . More kids play soccer than any of the other sports.”

There are roughly 800 kids who use the field year-round.

Brief history of treaty talks

A

few weeks before the landmark decision declaring aboriginal title proven by the Tsilhqot’in Nation, I picked up a used university textbook that looked like a handy reference.

Geography in British Columbia: People and Landscapes in Transition, by Brett McGillivray is a good reference, except where it strays from geography into politics. This 2005 edition came out not long before the B.C. Treaty Commission started producing agreements, notably with the Tsawwassen First Nation. It recounts the establishment of the Ministry of Native Affairs by the Bill Vander Zalm government in 1990, and the election the next year of Mike Harcourt’s NDP, who reversed the province’s historical legal position and tried to accept the existence of aboriginal title.

At this point the textbook departs from the facts and leads its freshman pupils into left-wing dogma.

McGillivray writes: “When the Liberal Party won the 2001 election (with all but two seats), it launched a province-wide referendum on treaty negotiations, prompting commentators to suggest the government was ‘trying to impose 19th century ideas on a 21st century problem’.”

Seven of the eight questions in the 2002 referendum were simply to confirm the existing position of B.C. treaty negotiators.

The Tsilhqot’in dropped claims of property held by non-aboriginal residents from their appeal to the highest court, a wise move considering that pushing people from their homes would lead to violent confrontations.

Other referendum questions related to preserving public access to Crown land for hunting, fishing and park use. All were endorsed.

Arguably, that’s what has emerged from the Tsilhqot’in case, which upholds provincial jurisdiction over public forest policy on environmental and fire protection on aboriginal title lands.

The Campbell government’s proposed Recognition Act would have accepted a form of aboriginal title across the province, based on 30 historical “indigenous nations.”

That idea originated not with the province but with the First Nations Leadership Council. It was rejected by a broader group of aboriginal leaders later that year.

The best way forward, also endorsed in the 2002 referendum, is sharing land use planning. B.C. has also begun sharing resource revenues. The most likely path, however, is back to court for years to come.

Trash Talk: tips to reduce garbage odours

W

ith the warm weather upon us, residents receiving curbside recycling collection alternated with garbage collection may be looking for solutions to reduce odours in the bin. This move to bi-weekly collection is on par with provincial trends and is a way to increase awareness of personal trash production among residents. At the end of the day, waste reduction is everyone’s responsibility and with a little consideration and effort it is possible to significantly reduce the amount of waste that is going to the curb and causing odours in the first place.

There are a few preventative measures residents can take to reduce odours. The number one cause of odours in the trash is organic material rotting and breaking down.

Indeed, organics are the number one source of methane pollution from landfills. Do your part by starting a compost or befriending someone who has one.

Backyard composting is easy and can be quite safe when done properly. There are a number of resources from the Regional District of BulkleyNechako on how to start and maintain a backyard compost.

come from decaying organic matter, but having other liquids in your trash may increase odours. In general, all liquids are banned from landfills throughout the province. Absorb liquids in kitty litter, sawdust, newspapers or other absorbent materials before placing in the trash.

Along with taking preventative measures, residents can: sprinkle garden lime, baking soda or powdered laundry detergent on top of garbage and throughout the cart; fasten a dryer sheet to the lid of the bin; place a few charcoal briquettes at the bottom; and mix a solution of bleach and

water (1:4) and spray bin and lid. If you have small children at home, flush solids from diapers down the toilet. Lastly, rinse your garbage cart out on a regular basis, as plastics do tend to absorb odours over time.

Also, let us all remember that this smelly problem is only an issue for less than half the year, as during other seasons, the garbage will be chilled or frozen naturally.

L ETTERS Redefining insignificant Editor: Public comment periods have recently been open for six component projects of the LNG export industry proposed for B.C.’s north coast, three large diameter pipelines of between 650 km and 875 km in length, and the three, massive LNG plants that they would feed.

Public consultation now has a sting in its tail. Documentation for one of the projects tallied more than 9,000 pages. A person interested and willing to comment could probably find information on any aspect of any given project. For one project, perhaps, but for six projects open for comment within as many months? Not likely.

TransCanada Pipelines, Spectra Energy, Royal Dutch Shell, the BG Group, and Petronas each hired armies of geotechs and bio-techs to create and rushpublish these reports.

The government agencies charged with overseeing the work have assigned but a handful of dedicated staff to reviewing each, and, as if to tax the abilities of everyone involved, have ensured that the reports were tabled in a mind-numbing chain reaction of open houses and public comment periods.

Here’s a shortcut to some smoggy nuggets buried within those reports. The projects would increase B.C.’s greenhouse gas emissions by these amounts: Coastal GasLink pipeline, six per cent; Prince Rupert Gas Transmission pipeline, 3.2 per cent; WestCoast Gas

Connector pipeline, four per cent if one pipeline, seven per cent if two pipelines; Pacific Northwest LNG 8.5 per cent, LNG Canada, 19.3 per cent; Prince Rupert LNG, six per cent. These numbers do not include the emissions from obtaining the fracked gas. In 2012, B.C.’s natural gas sector was responsible for 16.5 percent of the province’s greenhouse gas emissions. Each pipeline would essentially add that amount again. If all three pipelines were built, they would contribute a 49.5 per cent increase in emissions.

Each assessment labels its increase “insignificant” in comparison to global emissions. That’s a slick attempt to sidestep a minor impediment — a piece of provincial legislation. The Greenhouse Gas Reductions Target Act stipulates that, by 2020, B.C. must reduce emissions by 33 per cent from 2007 levels. These three pipeline-LNG plant combinations would, when also considering the source emissions from fracking, double BC’s greenhouse gas emissions at about the time that the 33 percent reduction should have been achieved.

Premier Christy Clark saw this hypocrisy in the making in 2012 and attempted to dodge it by changing the BC Clean Energy Act. Under her amendment, natural gas, when burned to power LNG conversion, became a “clean” source of energy, exempt from greenhouse gas reporting. Well, Premier Clark, even if you pretend that a

33.8 per cent increase in greenhouse gas emissions from three gas-fired LNG plants did not exist, those emissions would still go skyward.

All of the percentages cited above use the coefficient for methane of 25 times the effect of CO2 over a 100year timeframe. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change recently revised that coefficient to 34, meaning that each of the percentages needs to be upped by about one-third.

Eleven other LNG plants are proposed for BC. Most would require a new, large volume, fracked gas pipeline and attendant source emissions.

Despite sections that purportedly assess “Cumulative Effects,” not one of the assessments recently tabled follows through on the compounding math that so obviously blows The Greenhouse Gas Reductions Target Act out of the water, over the horizon, and into Orwellian doom.

Similarly, not one of the assessments bundles the myriad of other so-called “insignificant” impacts —social, marine, freshwater, terrestrial; people, fish, mammals, birds, plants — into a lump that acknowledges that these projects would create monumental social and environmental change at the landscape level.

There is no big picture

thinking here; only the view to making a dollar at any cost, and to hell with the people who live in and care for those places “beyond Hope.”

Our political leaders, who peddle this sham process as “robust” and “meaningful,” are, more and more cumulatively, either recklessly oblivious or truly full of hot air. Their lack of ethical leadership with regard to the climate change risks and multipliers inherent in B.C.’s proposed LNG industry is a global peril. Their misrepresentation of their electorate will stand, long after they have gone, as an eternal shame.

Roy is a prolific reader, researcher, and great writer who studies dozens of sites each week, and reposts the better articles he finds to his site. If they can’t be reposted, Hales studies the article, does additional research, and writes his own good article on the subject. Plus if you have any desire to contribute your own constructive non-political writing, you could send it to him for review and possible inclusion on the site. Similarly, if you come across a good environmental article on another site, you might think about sharing the link with Hales, which could benefit all of his readers. The Skeena Hunter Advisory Committee (SHAC) has strongly supported an elk hunt in the Bulkley Valley for many years now. It has now become obvious to local hunters that MFLNRO has a strong bias against any elk hunt in our valley and stands by questionable excuses to support that position.

At the SHAC meeting in 2013, one of your local ministry representatives stated that he had conducted an unbiased survey of farmers and ranchers in the Quick area and that they were absolutely non-supportive of our small and very conservative hunt for elk.

You are likely aware that many of our members are long time Bulkley Valley residents and are very familiar with the landowners that are being negatively affected by the elk. Most of these family operations are very supportive of an elk hunt and some in fact believe the BVRG proposal is too conservative to reduce the elk population. How is it that your ministry can continue to support such a negative position on hunting when the facts show otherwise?

MFLNRO continues to state that only a few dozen elk exist in

the entirety of the Bulkley Valley. This position contradicts landowners and members of the SHAC reporting herds of 20 to over 60 elk at one time for many years now.

One local resident has photos from a trail camera of at least 10 different sixpoint or larger bull elk on one property alone. Again, your ministry continually refuses to implement our modest proposal for just a short hunt on six point bull elk. Extensive elk hunting opportunities have existed for many years now in Region 7 (Peace), which adjoins our region. We find this inconsistency more than questionable and feel some intervention is required to resolve this issue prior to the 2014 hunting season.

Yee dashes her way to Team Canada

One of Hazelton’s own will be competing in the world junior championships after beating out 16 other competitiors at a provincial race over the weekend.

Local track and field star Regan Yee defended her 2013 BC Junior title, posting a personal best of 6:38 in the 2,000-metre steeplechase championship in Quebec last Friday.

The win earns her a spot on the Canadian team that will compete at the International Association of Athletics Federation world junior championships in Eugene, Oregon later

this month.

Yee will be running the 3,000-metre steeplechase, 1,000 metres more than she is used to.

She was the only racer from the Bulkley Valley who qualified for the BC Junior team after running the 2,000-metre steeplechase in 6:57, beating qualifying time of 7:03.

“There are a lot of good athletes [in the Bulkley Valley] who could be running track,” said Yee. “Our club is growing and there are a lot of new athletes. But it feels good to be representing my area.”

While Yee will be racing on a larger, international stage, she is no stranger to competition.

“I love competing, I love being good at it,” said Yee. “I love the opportunities [running] brings. You get to be on teams and you get to travel

places and you get to train with other people — it’s a sense of teamwork.”

She has already raced in six other competitions in San

Francisco, Oregon and Vancouver so far this summer.

Yee’s love of running and competitive spirit started when she

joined the track and field team in elementary school.

But it wasn’t until she made the BC Summer Games in Grade 9 that she began to diversify her running skills.

“I went to the B.C. Summer Games and it was the best experience of my life,” she said.

“After that I tried cross country at our school every year and joined the track and field club and I just went from there.”

Yee’s former coach Neal Currie, who coached her for four years, described her as a fast, efficient runner.

“She kept getting better, started running faster and moving up in placing,” said Currie.

“Her finishing kick is very strong, if she’s with a group at the end of a race, she’s usually going to win.”

While running is a huge part of her life, the soon-to-be 19-year-old is looking to the future and potential careers after finishing her first year at Trinity Western University.

“I’m not sure if I’m going to switch my major or change schools and go to a different university,” said the engineering major.

The Hazelton Secondary School grad received a track scholarship to TWU and is entering her second year.

The world junior championships run from July 22-27.

BV U13 fall short at provincials

The Bulkley Valley U13 girls’ season ended quickly after dropping all of their matches at provincials this weekend.

The team, making their first appearance at provincials, played four games in Chilliwack, leaving with a record of 0-4.

Their first two games were difficult, losing to the Powell River Predators 4-0 and the Nelson Selects 3-1.

However, as the tournament went on, the girls managed to keep the other teams at bay, losing to the North Shore Pegasus 1-0 and the Prince George Timberwolves 2-1.

“I felt like we dominated the game, we unfortunately couldn’t finish,” said head coach Brenda Hanchard of the last

game against Prince George. “They scored with 13 minutes left, it was tied 1-1 and then they scored and we just couldn’t get it back.”

Despite a disappointing end to the tournament, Hanchard believes the girls improved their game immensely.

“As the games progressed, their communication got better and their twotouch on the ball got better, which is pretty big and just marking up and their overall team play was improving,” she said.

“The thing we have to work on most is finishing.”

Overall, the coaches were happy with the team’s performance.

“It was a real growing experience for the girls. Each game they got better and better. They had some bonding moments and worked hard on the field,” said Hanchard, adding that they have only played nine games together this season.

However, the team did not leave empty handed, they walked away with a plaque after receiving the fair play award.

While the season is over, Hanchard hopes the results of the tournament won’t dampen their spirits.

“They’re all so young and I hope that they continue playing.

By the time they reach U18, they’ll be a force,” she said.

The team will take a break and start up again in January indoors.

Gorbahn helps capture golf cup

A Smithers golfer was part of the Canadian junior golf team that defeated their American counterparts in dramatic fashion to capture the North America Cup trophy

for the first time in seven years.

Kaleb Gorbahn helped CJGA Team Canada beat IJGT Team USA at the 12th annual North America Cup in South Carolina earlier this month.

Team Canada defeated Team USA 15.5-12.5.

Even though Gorbahn dropped his singles match, he was still happy with his overall performance.

“This was one of the most memorable experiences that I have ever had in golf,” said Gorbahn. “I loved the atmosphere, I loved how well we became a team. I

think that this is one of the reasons we won — we were truly a team. A team who cared for each other and want each other to succeed.”

Team Canada team manager Stephen Nixon was proud to finally win the cup after seven years.

Thanks!

“It means so much to be a part of the team that finally brought the cup home,” he said.

Gorbahn and fellow Smithers golfer Adam Veenstra are traveling to Pitt Meadows for the BC Juniors Boys’ Championship next week.

The 2014 Cherokee could not be further away from the last model; this is a thoroughly modern SUV with go-anywhere capability and aroundtown refinement that needs to be experienced.

Otters break club records at provincials

Members of the Bulkley Valley Otters swim team posted personal bests against some strong competitors during provincials over the weekend.

Bailey and Tanner Espersen, and Luke Berarducci represented Smithers

in the AAA championship in Victoria during the four-day swim meet, competing in more than 10 races each.

Luke broke club records in the 100 metre fly and the 200 metre individual medley.

Tanner broke club records in the 200 and 1,500 metre freestyle, and the 100 metre backstroke.

While Bailey broke club records in the 200 metre backstroke, 50, 100- and 200-metre breaststroke and the 200 and 400 metre individual medley.

Although they didn’t medal during this meet, coach Tom Best believes they swam their hardest.

“They all swam great. No medals, but there’s a pretty tough crowd there,” he said.

Best said provincials are the most challenging meet the young swimmers will face.

“Knowing the size of the meet and the length, we’re looking at four 13-hour-days.

It’s just not conducive to great swimming,” he said. “Despite that, they swam quite well, there were a number of club records.”

Best added that

they all had good reaction times off the start, excellent turns and starts and strokes.

“I’m proud of the way the kids swam, but it was a tough meet,” he said.

The provincials marks the end of the season for many Otters. However, Berarducci will be swimming at the upcoming B.C. Summer Games.

A Quesnel resident took home the trophy at the senior mens amateur tournament in Smithers after an intense playoff this weekend.

James Pedersen from Quesnel defeated Bill Stephens, who won the tournament in 2012.

“It felt good. I’ve been in a few playoffs, so I’m quite used to it,” he said.“I felt comfortable, I felt really relaxed and I just hit my drive the way I wanted to hit it.

I was quite surprised where the ball ended

up at.”

But Pedersen admits he got lucky.

“Someone told me that it hit a lady’s cart down by the green otherwise I would have been on the fringe of the green.”

Pedersen beat out 85 other competitors from around the region playing 36 holes in the two-daylong tournament.

According to Chris Herkel, head golf pro at the Smithers Golf and Country Club, the annual tournament isn’t all about golf.

“When they come here, sure there’s a tournament involved, but they come in and see a lot of friends

that they haven’t seen in awhile, especially those from out of town,” said Herkel.

“It’s a real sense of camaraderie amongst the seniors.”

Tour de North coming through Smithers

Smithers is well represented in this year’s Cops for Cancer Tour de North fundraising event.

The Bulkley Valley has two riders representing the community, Const.

Jennifer McCreesh and Northern Health employee Rohitha Fernando.

The 900-kilometre ride starts in Prince George Sept. 12 and ends in Prince Rupert Sept. 18. Tour de North riders are expected to arrive in Smithers on Sept. 14.

The trek is in support of paediatric cancer research and also raises money for Camp Goodtimes, a summer recreation program that provides a unique summer experience for children and teens with cancer and their families.

This is the fifth year in a row McCreesh has taken part in the ride, but this is the first time it also goes through the community she lives in. She’s also never had a community partner to ride with.

“I’m so excited to be riding with another person from the community,” she said. “It opens up a lot more opportunities to share the message.

“My purpose is to get the message out there around healthy, active living and participating in your community to help the people you care about and who need it most.”

Because of McCreesh’s erratic schedule, the two have not been able to train together yet but the RCMP member said she has been preparing all year for the trip.

“I train all over the place,” McCreesh said. “I pack my bike everywhere—if we go on

camping trips, holidays, I always find somewhere to ride.”

This summer, due to the generosity of the community, the two have organized fundraising events almost every weekend leading up to the ride.

On Saturday, there is a meet and greet sponsored

by Alpine Optometry next to Bugwood Bean from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Anyone attending the meet and greet will also be entered into a draw for a pair of sunglasses.

On July 19, there is a barbecue and head-shaving event from 11 a.m. to 2

p.m. in front of Simico’s Salon on Broadway Ave. The following Saturday, July 26, Bulkley Valley Wholesale is hosting a fundraising barbecue from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

“I’m so flattered that so many people want to participate in this,” McCreesh said. “I’m getting phone calls from so many local businesses who are asking how they can get involved.

That just provides more encouragement.”

In August, the pair will also be hosting fundraising events in Houston and in Hazelton so those communities can take part

in the Tour de North.

The main fundraising event, the popular Jail and Bail, is Sept. 5 in the Bulkley Valley Credit Union parking lot.

“Everybody is super excited about the Jail and Bail because the people who were thrown in jail last year want their revenge,” McCreesh said.

“The detachment has already been getting phone calls about it.”

On Sept. 14, when the Tour de North riders enter Smithers, a welcome event will be held at Canadian Tire. It’s here that McCreesh and a few other women will be chopping

off their hair to be donated to Locks for Love, a nonprofit organization that provides wigs for children suffering hair loss from any illness.

McCreesh, who has red hair, said because so few people share her shade of colour she feels it’s even more important to contribute her locks.

“I feel a real connection to my gingerness,” she said.

“I accept it, I embrace it, I own it. Imagine being a child who is already struggling to cope with a disease that they might not truly understand and to lose something that makes them special. I think it

would be heartbreaking.”

From Smithers, Hudson Bay Mountain is large, picturesque and casts a shadow over the town. But another way to catch a breathtaking glimpse of the mountain is to see it from the sky.

On light-wind, slightly cloudy days, a handful of Smithers residents can be seen paragliding through the skies above the Bulkley Valley.

“There’s a small group of us who fly here, probably about eight of us,” said Will MacKenzie, who has

been paragliding for about five years. “The learning part of how to launch and land a glider is a fairly easy task. But to me, the most fascinating thing is . . . to get good at flying and use the air properly and go cross country. It’s amazing what people can do.

It’s hard to get bored.”

Unlike biking, skiing or kayaking, where there are many chances to learn the sport locally, there are no paragliding instructors in Smithers. The paragliding enthusiasts in Smithers have learned to fly elsewhere.

But according to

MacKenzie, it’s easy to learn the basics of taking off and landing.

“To me, it’s surprising that more people don’t pick up flying. It’s a pretty cool way to see the world,” he said, noting that there is a bunny hill in town where people can practice flying very short distances.

Paragliding is similar to crosscountry paragliding, but requires more skill and an understanding of weather patterns, added MacKenzie.

“The core of flying is how to stay up for a length of time which is all about finding

rising air or thermals,” he said. “You have to infer where they are and once you’ve found them, understand how to use them well.”

Jones added that the group is almost finished building a launch site on the ski hill as well.

With the paragliding season in full swing, MacKenzie and Jones try to get out as often as weather permits.

For Jones, paragliding isn’t just a sport but has become a way of life.

“We all get up in the morning and the first thing we do is

check the weather. It’s a pretty passionate activity,” said Jones, adding that his eightyear-old daughter already wants to fly.

MacKenzie, who flew as far as 35 kilometres from the Babines to Hungry Hill near Houston in a paraglider recently, said it offers him a chance to fulfill a lifelong dream.

“It really is the dream of flying,” said MacKenzie.

“Back before planes, people really wanted to fly like a bird and that’s totally what paragliding is and at certain times of the year, you really are flying with the birds.”

Britco and GDC announce partnership

Britco and the Gitxsan Development Corporation are teaming up to create a building rental and workforce accommodation business.

The two signed a memorandum of understanding June 26. The business will focus on large infrastructure projects proposed in the area. They have already started marketing to possible customers in Alberta and B.C. Britco, based in Langley, is one of the largest modular construction companies in the industry. They provide temporary and permanent residential and commercial modular buildings for construction, energy and resource sectors.

“Many members of the Gitxsan First Nation are business owners and as part of this agreement we’ll be utilizing their services, the opportunity to work with these businesses is one that we look forward to,” said Britco president Mike Ridley.

GDC president and CEO Rick Connors said there could be up to 200 people working in a proposed camp.

“It’s jobs that the Gitxsan have the talent for, they just require some over arching management. To run a quality type operation that you have to run in these types of camps, you need that, its not just a burger joint, you are trying to cook gourmet meals on a regular basis.”

The GDC, according to its website, is the holding company for

Gitxsan enterprise and is governed by a board of directors appointed by the trustees of the Gitxsan Lipgyet Trust. The corporation belongs to the Gitxsan people. Their site also says its structure is unique to the business world, melding the traditional governance of the Gitxsan to the contemporary needs of global businesses.

Connors doesn’t think the Gitxsan Treaty Society pulling the plug on all discussions about any proposed pipeline development will hinder this new partnership with Britco.

“From the outside looking in, it looks conflicting,” he said. “On the surface it looks like the chiefs are penalizing the proponents, the intent is to bring awareness to the government to have them address the problem and address it now. The GDC continues to perform its duties, we aren’t discussing the projects, we are implementing some things that have to be put in place.”

The GTS stopped discussions surrounding LNG projects last month because the government has signed agreements in principle with neighbouring bands for land and rights that the Gitxsan said would be taken away from them.

“Our partners all know and understand the implications and they are all in full support and full agreement with the hereditary chiefs in terms of their stance.

It isn’t like they are making any statement against a project at all, they are simply stating their case when it comes to the handling of the agreements in principle with the other First Nations,” said Connors.

Tyhee Lake Triathlon

Residents of Smithers and Telkwa are advised that the Tyhee Lake Triathlon is taking place Sunday, July 13th at Tyhee Lake Provincial Park.

The event will run from 9:00 am until about 1:00 pm.

Athletes will be in the lake from 9:00 am until 11:00 am and on the roads surrounding the lake from about 9:20 am until close to 1:00 pm. Residents are asked to use caution when driving on Tyhee Lake Park Road, Telkwa High Road and Tyhee Lake Road during the race and to watch out for cyclists and runners. More than 150 Kispiox Valley residents have signed a petition and made a declaration to stand against any LNG projects.

The declaration starts off by saying: “Be it known that we, the undersigned community of the Kispiox Valley, British Columbia, believe that the well-being of ourselves and our neighbours, our livelihoods and economy, and our lands and waters are paramount. We highly value intact ecosystems that sustain and support a vibrant and diverse watershed.”

The declaration also states the community recognizes and honours the Gitxsan, and hold in high regard their culture and traditional methods of responsible stewardship.

“It is a community, this is democracy in action. Seventy per cent of the community and growing that have signed this document,” Stockner said.

Stocker said it was hard to say whether this document will hold any weight with the LNG companies or government.

“It is our hope that other communities will read it and feel inspired by it,” he said.

The BC Association of Farmers’ Markets campaign to attract and entice new people to check out local farmers’ markets is happening across the province this summer.

Hazelton market manager and vendor Jonathan Knight said the public awareness campaign has helped bring more shoppers out.

“The Hazelton market has really taken off. This is our sixth season that we’ve been running it. Like all markets, it takes a couple of years before you can attract enough vendors and customers and for people to realize all we are able to create locally.”

The provincial association also launched a contest where people can snap photos of themselves at a farmers market and upload it to their Facebook page.

The deadline to enter has passed but voting runs until July 21.

The Hazelton market offers fresh vegetables, fruit, locally produced goods, baking and live music.

It runs on Sundays from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. at the corner of Highway 16 and 62 until September.

Notice is hereby given that the Regional District of Bulkley-Nechako Board will be considering the issuance of a Temporary Use Permit (TUP) at a meeting to be held during business hours on Thursday July 17, 2014 in the Regional District of Bulkley-Nechako Board Room, 37-3rd Avenue, Burns Lake, B.C. The proposed crushing plant will be located on an existing gravel pit on the subject property and will operate from the hours of 7:00 am to 6:00 pm for a period of two weeks between May 1 and October 1 of each year.Â

INVITATION TO REVIEW AND PROVIDE COMMENT ON 2014-2024 WOODLOT LICENSE PLAN A Woodlot License Plan (WLP) for Woodlot 2114 has been prepared. As per Section 17 of the Woodlot License Planning and Practices Regulation the WLP is being made available for Public Review and Comment. Woodlot 2114 is held by Lars Hagen and is located in the Kispiox Valley. The woodlot is in two distinct areas, the northern portion is north of approximately 12km on the Kuldo FSR and the eastern section is tributary to the Blackstock Road which branches off the Kuldo FSR at approximately 11km. The Woodlot License Plan will be available for public viewing from June 25, 2014 to July 25, 2014 at the Hazelton District Public Library located at 4255 Government Street, Hazelton B.C. The Woodlot License Plan provides strategies and performance requirements for forestry operations within the woodlot license area and for the protection of non-timber values and features.

There will be an informal overview and project updates on the Regional District of Kitimat-Stikine’s plans for the Kitwanga Tranfser Station and the Hazelton Landfill Phase two expansion.

The opinion of others In 2000, I decided to take a one year sabbatical from my business career (this continues!) and move to Vancouver from England. I was studying for a Diploma in Christian Studies at Regent College, and was attending one of the courses. The lecturer was talking about emotional security and how we invest our security in the opinion of others.

‘Why’, he said ‘in London, Chris here was something – but here in Vancouver…’

Well, he was right of course. I’d already been struggling with the change of circumstances whereby I was now ‘just another student’.

Jesus warned the Pharisees about this kind of trap. As he told his disciples, the Pharisees ‘do all their deeds to be seen by others.

For they make their phylacteries (prayer boxes) broad and their fringes long, and they love the place of honor at

feasts and the best seats in the synagogues and greetings in the marketplaces and being called rabbi by others.’

Founding our security in the views of others is always a dangerous business.

People’s opinions can change in an instant. Better still to found your security in God’s opinion. He knows what we’re like – our failures, our weaknesses, our sins. And yet he still loves us so much that he sent his own Son to die for us.

Jesus often spoke of the Pharisees because their reputation in Jewish society was a high one, but they were in the end ‘blind guides’. Nevertheless, Jesus loved them too and wanted them to see that it was God’s opinion of them that mattered, not people’s.

And once they had understood that, maybe they would look to see what he said about them in the bible. That they were sinners and needed a Saviour.
