As is often remarked, Nakusp district volunteers play a major role in keeping our communities together and functioning well. They are indeed a primary source of remarkable inspiration to those of us who are considering ways and means of learning new skills and building new relationships which benefit us all.

In this column, I wish to pay special tribute to everyone associated with the (Nakusp region) Community Volunteer Income Tax program who for many years have lent their valuable time and personal resources benefitting a large number of local individuals. They provide this service free of charge and on a confidential basis.

Those who request and receive assistance are our friends and neighbours who live either on a limited income or who feel challenged when it comes to completing and filing their annual income tax returns.

The preparatory weeks before the official income tax season take root early in February, while the active processing and filing period runs through until early May. Although this time is referred to as the “official” tax return period, it should be noted that the CVIT program is operative throughout the year. Assistance remains available by request for simple tax filing throughout the year.

The local CVIT volunteers received the latest updated program materials used to process each of the individual returns along with the latest computerized training resources. Each of our team members developed an excellent working relationship not only within the CVITP team itself, but also with members of the public, a local service organization and the staff members associated with Canada Revenue.

The local program was officially initiated almost 12 years ago in our own area. Each year more and more individuals request direct assistance in completing and filing their documentation, acquiring information on what deductions can be claimed as applicable, as well as obtaining general information or referrals.

This year alone, over one hundred individual tax packages were processed by CVITP volunteers. We are assured that the program is much appreciated by seniors and other members of the community.

I wish to honor the following CVITP partners I have been proud to serve with as the local volunteer program coordinator: Heather Davidson, Dianne Zeuch and Debbie Bleakney (each of whom are trained processors).

Also, many sincere thanks are extended to Dan Nicholson, Jan McMurray, Gabi Koehler for handling the drop-off and pick-up stations and transportation between Nakusp and New Denver. A warm thank you is also extended to Arrow and Slocan Lakes Community Services (especially Shori) for the courtesy use of a reception room/clinic space to facilitate our program.

It seems a contradiction for a person who makes a career of telling stories with pieces of writing and snapshots of life to be nervous about hosting her own art show.

Journalists routinely release their work into the communal intellectual landscape for public scrutiny, and are hardened veterans of criticism, but as Clair Paradis points out, her debut exhibition “is much more personal.”

A year ago Nakusp lost an important member of its community when Paradis made the difficult decision

to pursue a unique research opportunity in Montreal.

Those of us who look forward to Wednesday’s paper like a visit from an old friend suddenly found themselves in a literary shakedown as our community connection was tweaked with Paradis’ departure.

During her time with the Arrow Lakes News, Paradis successfully integrated herself into the community of Nakusp and routinely brought us stories through her journalistic integrity fueled by an inclination for conversation and photography.

The weekly spread of im-

ages in the paper eventually caught the eye of local gallerist, Anne Beliveau, who began to notice artistic details in Paradis’ photojournalism.

Intrigued, Beliveau continued to follow Paradis’ work via postings on Facebook and eventually decided to invite the wayward journalist back to Nakusp for an opportunity to tell her own story.

Pardaris’ exhibition “Small Wonders” has the unique honour of being the only scheduled photography show in this year’s lineup at Studio Connexion.

The collection of still images has been organized by

Paradis and Beliveau in a manner that reflects the ebb and flow of nature’s seasonal cycles, highlighting a variety of marvels captured in our very own backyard.

“It’s all about finding those moments,” Paradis explains “and just being in the right place and time to catch them.

They can happen anywhere.

Walking through my garden or out on a hike noticing light and patterns that making me stop and focus on the details.”

“Small Wonders” runs from July 2 to July 19 during the gallery’s regular hours, Tuesday to Saturday from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., or by appointment.

Our View

Thanks again… and again

This may not be a large community, but that doesn’t mean large efforts are not needed and appreciated when it comes to staging community functions.

Special events like Nakusp’s recent Canada Day celebrations and ongoing efforts like the work done at our local museum and other venues, require the selfless contributions of caring folks.

There are special occasions that come up from time to time designed for showering thanks on the energetic community-minded folks who seem to show up when something needs to get done. These special tribute times are great, but the gratitude should really flow freely year round.

The effort and expense needed to pull off a banquet, benefit concert, national birthday party or… you name it, may not seem like such a big deal unless we all stop to think of doing it ourselves.

Many hands really do make the work light, and many thanks to the many who prove that point, year round.

• This Week in History • July 18, 1924 A public meeting was called to make arrangements to welcome and entertain His Excellency the Governor General of Canada, Lord Byng of Vimy, Lady Byng and Miss Byng who are to visit Nakusp from 4-6 p.m. August 11.

July 19, 1934 Under an agreement ratified this week, a loan to the White Pine Lumber Co. at Nakusp so it can continue to operate, was guaranteed by the B.C. Government. The agreement provides for the Canadian Bank of Commerce to loan the money to the company against warehouse receipts on logs.

July 20, 1944 The annual meeting of the Nakusp School District was held at the school house with 11 taxpayers present. The following budget for the coming year was accepted: Salaries $4200, Fuel

$300, Light and water $75, School Supplies $100. After some discussion the meeting reaffirmed its stand for the consolidation of the three school areas of Nakusp, Glenbank and Brouse. The meeting also passed a motion that it was in favor of a health nurse for the area from Renata and Deer Park to Box Lake, and action is to be taken to put it into effect.

July 15, 1954 The south highway has been under water at a point near Nakusp and also a point near Burton. Cars were being towed through the flooded section at Burton.

July 16, 1964 Nakusp Rural Route 1 will be established on Wednesday, July 15. The courier will leave Nakusp Post Office as soon as possible after the receipt and sortation of mails from Nelson. Service on the rural route will be provided

to approved mail boxes erected on the right hand side of the line of travel.

July 24, 1974 A petition of 221 voters of the Village of Nakusp was presented to council asking that a vote be taken regarding the amalgamation of the rural areas surrounding the town. It was decided to petition the minister to have a vote taken on the proposed boundary extensions.

July 18, 1984 On Friday the thirteenth at 13:13 a vehicle driven by Sandra Stevens blew a tire and went out of control on Highway 6 near Box Lake and sent Miss Stevens and her passenger, Connie Zeleznik to the hospital.

stay higher longer, doesn’t appear to be happening. As of July 7, the Reservoir was three feet below the same time last year.

July 14, 2004 Nakusp’s first annual music festival is ready to take centre stage this weekend. Willi Jahnke, president of the Naksup Roots Music Society is confident that at least 1,500 tickets will be sold to the inaugural event, allowing the Society to recover their costs and make a small profit. 1,200 tickets have already been sold, with over two-thirds sold as weekend passes.

With the nice weather forecasted for the weekend, Jahnke is confident sales would likely increase. About half of the sales have been local. About 175 volunteers spread over the two days will assist in this big event.

It is safe to venture the suggestion that the popular opinion in the Arrow Lakes region is that food just tastes better when you grow it yourself and by extension the act of gardening is an exercise in healthy living.

Nakusp has an inherent tradition of gardening and readily identifies with its rich history of cornerstone institutions that have helped shape the culture of our community.

There are still those among us that remember the pre-flood glory of the Spicer’s family farm along the waterfront and readily share the local secret of their continued production of quality produce. Spicer’s farm has been a key contributor to the local economy since Sam Henry bought two large lots east of Nelson Avenue in 1904 and supplied local residents and steamboats with fruits and vegetables. The family remains an important presence in the community to this day, as do the historic farm buildings that were relocated in 1906 and housed the well-known Spicer’s Nursery.

When Spicer’s Nursery changed hands in April of 2013, the new proprietors decided to honor the significant historical context of the Spicer legacy by renaming the business Heritage Nursery.

Owners Bill and Carla Poulin are committed to nursing the tradition of gardening in Nakusp by “striving to keep our nursery stocked with high quality, organic products from local growers and remain competitive with our pricing.”

“We are very fortunate” Bill explains, “to be able to grow a lot of our own food, including berries, vegetables and soft fruits. Being self sufficient is incredibly beneficial and rewarding.”

Bill and Carla took advantage of the local business opportunity and made the move from Kelowna to Nakusp, bringing with them a rich resume of experience. Bill owned and operated a landscaping company as a certified landscape horticulturalist in his former community and Carla will be completing her Master Gardeners course this fall.

marvel in and of itself, greeting visitors with a stunning display of herb and vegetable starts mixed with flowering plants and gardening materials. The number of ornamental fountains displayed prominently amongst the verdure compliments the sublime aroma of fresh dirt and healthy greenery.

The high standards of the nursery have obviously been maintained and even expanded with the addition of a refurbished barn-turnedgift shop.

“You should have seen it before” Bill proudly explains, “it

was full of coal and newspapers from the 40’s, but I cleaned it out and reworked the whole space from top to bottom.”

The gift shop features local artisans and has been included as a venue on the Arrow Lakes Fine Arts Art Walk.

“There is a lot of talent in this town,” Bill points out.

“Woodworkers, authors, painters, potters...there is so much the community has to offer.”

Future growing plans for the Heritage Nursery include a proposal to offer Hanging Basket courses and a desire to participate in B.C.’s regional gardening program, Communities in Bloom.

Could Nakusp become home to a clean energy bioenergy plant employing up to 45 people?

Imagine taking all the wood waste produced in Nakusp and area – the waste from the mills and the slash piles in the back country that are burned in the fall - and converting it into usable, clean, green energy.

This is the proposal of John Christie of Vineyard Tech Consulting and Kelly Burnham of Proton Power Inc., two experts in the development of green technology who came to Nakusp on May 28 to meet with members of council, local businesses, the Chamber, and the Nakusp and Area Development Board.

Christie spoke of two options for Nakusp – to manufacture torrefied wood pellets or to produce green diesel.

Christie focused on the production of

green diesel option, describing it as “the most exciting new technology.” The first plant to make green diesel from biomass was opened in Austria in July 2012 by BioEnergy International and OMV, an Austrian oil and gas company.

Converting wood waste to green diesel fuel also results in a by-product called biochar,(www.biochar.info), Christie explained, which is becoming very valuable to restoring carbon in the ground for agriculture.

Christie believes there is enough wood waste available in Nakusp and area to make a green diesel plant feasible, and because green diesel is in high demand, there are good investor opportunities.

A green diesel plant would require

an area of approximately two hectares (five acres) which could produce up to 15 million litres of liquid fuel per year and employ 40 to 50 people year-round.

Christie said “green diesel plants can also convert deciduous trees like cottonwood, birch, and willow, as well as straw, hay and some municipal garbage, into fuel.”

The proposed plant will address the amount of wood waste in the area, which is a real problem. The waste is generated from local mills, the pole yard

and Box Lake Lumber and to date, there is no established method of disposal.

In June 2013, the Nakusp District Heating Group formed and is looking at a district heating system with the Village of Nakusp using wood waste to heat commercial buildings. However, this would only use approximately 20 loads of wood waste per year and Nakusp is currently holding over 600 loads. A feasibility study will be proposed in the near future as part of the pursuit of this venture.

Answers for Last Weeks

NACFOR FUND DISBURSEMENT The Nakusp and Area Community Forest (NACFOR) is a stand-alone entity, registered as a corporation in BC, with the Village of Nakusp as the sole owner and shareholder.

It has been conducting forestry operations in the area since 2008. One of the objectives of NACFOR is to disburse profits from operations, net of operating capital, to the local area.

NACFOR has now realized a profit and will be disbursing up to $50,000 through a granting process this year. Funds will be distributed between the three funding zones: 1. Nakusp, 2. Nakusp/RDCK area K north of Arrow Park/Summit Lake Ski Hill, and 3. RDCK area K south from Arrow Park to Edgewood.
