It was beautiful weather and a great crowd for Grand Forks’ Canada Day parade and festivies. The theme of the event was “Homegrown in the Boundary.” An estimated 1,000 people came out for the celebration. The parade started at 10 a.m. at Dick Bartlett Park and went down Kettle River Drive into Selkirk College. At the park there was several fun events including the Elks pancake breakfast, face painting, jazzercise, entertainment on stage, and nearly 20 vendors. The opening ceremony included a performance from the Grand Forks Pipes and Drums followed by a speech from Mayor Brian Taylor. There was also plenty of birthday cake for everyone to help celebrate Canada’s 147th birthday.
Grand Forks’ Canada Day parade featured an eclectic mix of floats and people marching. The local ATV club is always a strong fixture at local events bringing together people of all ages to celebrate. For more photos go to A14. Craig Lindsay photo

A local woman is outraged after learning her son’s support workers would need additional criminal record checks to accompany him at his volunteer job at the library. Arlene Vanderniet sent a letter to the Grand Forks and District Public Library board as well as library director Avi Silberstein stating that the decision is causing extra unnecessary hardship. “The only reason that his support staff are at the library with him are to enable him to be involved in his community,” she wrote.
Kootenay Society for Community Living (KSCL) and Sunshine Valley Community Service (SVCS) fill out criminal record checks when they’ve already got them, as is necessary to work in those organizations, is redundant. Under the Criminal Records Review Act, any individual working with children or vulnerable adults directly or potentially have unsupervised access to children or vulnerable adults must authorize a criminal record check for their employer or authorized organization. On Oct. 28, 2013, changes were made to the act that al• See LIBRARY page A8

Her son must be accompanied by a support worker at all times because of his special needs, she says. She adds that he enjoys working at the library and it allows him to do something positive with his time. “All people outside of his immediate family have had to get criminal record checks in order to work with him and they are NOT a library volunteer while accompanying him,” she said. “I see no need for any of them to be asked to provide the library with a criminal record check and I ask that you reconsider your request in this matter.” Vanderniet also says that having support workers from
