The blasts of propane cannons on berry farms will continue as usual this summer, as council again could not find consensus on new regulations for the controversial devices.

A proposed bylaw to largely limit the use of propane cannons in Abbotsford was denied provincial approval last month, and on Monday,

council couldn’t find internal agreement on a less stringent set of rules.

Last year, council struggled to settle on an appropriate bylaw to regulate the audible bird scare devices, ending on a split vote for both a strict set of regulations and a revised and less severe set of rules.

The city eventually decided to send the more strident version of the bylaw to the province for

approval, which aimed to shorten hours of use, lessen the number of shots allowed per hour, increase the distance between the devices and neighbouring homes, kennels and livestock, and levy fees for cannon use and fines for improper use.

On June 13, city staff received an email from the ministry, advising it would not approve the bylaw.

The province said the regulations dictated in the bylaw would effectively serve as a ban on cannon use in Abbotsford and suggested lessening the restrictions while allowing the city to impose fines for not following the regulations.

Coun. John Smith said that to accept the loosened regulations would be to accept downloading from the provincial government, by effectively making city bylaw staff take on the province’s duty to enforce the current guidelines.

Coun. Bill MacGregor read a letter from an Abbotsford resident to council, explaining that the issue is not simply with farmers who disobey the regulations, but with any use of propane cannons. MacGregor said that frustrations are growing among rural residents, and the blueberry industry

A tie vote defeated the proposed regulations, with Couns. Smith, Gill, MacGregor and Les Barkman voting against the bylaw and Couns. Ross, Dave Loewen, Henry Braun and Mayor Bruce Banman in favour.

Council called on staff to report on efforts to start a regional starling management program, to lessen the impact of the invasive bird species on crops.

The Abbotsford Chamber of Commerce expressed disappointment over council’s decision.

said in a news release that the chamber had spoken against the original bylaw, which would have effectively banned the cannons, in favour of a bylaw with reasonable limits that would “allow for enforcement to deal with the few chronic abusers.”

Asaph said that it is unfortunate that while communities such as Langley Township have adopted bylaws to mitigate concerns, Abbotsford has not been able to implement its own rules.

The new Langley law allows one firing every five minutes for a single cannon and no more than 33 shots an hour when more than one cannon is being fired by a berry farm. Escalating fines for violating the rules are set at $150 for the first offence, $350 for a second and $500 for a third and any subsequent offence. Farmers are also required to get a $125 licence each year to use the cannons.

The email from the province advises Abbotsford that Langley’s bylaw is largely consistent with the ministry’s model noise bylaw and “it appears to be working well.”

Abbotsford teen takes home Lower Mainland pageant crown Alex BUTLER

Abbotsford’s Amrit Dosanjh came home with a crown from the Miss, Mrs. and Miss Teen BC pageant.

The 16-year-old Rick Hansen Secondary student took the title of Miss Teen Lower Mainland at the competition on June 30.

Brittany O’Rourke of Mission took the Miss Fraser Valley title.

This is the first time a Mission resident has placed in the pageant.

Dosanjh will now assume a variety of new responsibilities, including making public appearances.

But she says her most important AMRIT DOSANJH job is being a good role model for younger girls.

The event was her first pageant, but Dosanjh jumped on the opportunity to try something new.

“Growing up, I’ve always learned that you’ve got to take

every opportunity you get. So I took the opportunity and tried out.”

Fifty women from around the province participated in the pageant, with a variety of crowns to win. But Dosanjh said despite the fact that the pageant is technically a competition, “I actually realized that I made 50 amazing friends.”

The three-day event saw the contestants complete workshops on diverse subjects such as self-defence and healthy living. Dosanjh believes what set her apart was her public speaking skills and ability to communicate with an audience.

Now that she has the crown BRITTANY O’ROURKE and title, she will focus on her platform, which is working to end child hunger.

The pageant will be broadcast on Shaw Television later this month.

Candles started apartment blaze, say officials

Candles left burning on a living room table were the cause of a fire at an Abbotsford apartment building on Sunday, say investigators.

Abbotsford Fire Rescue Service (AFRS) crews were called at about 5:30 p.m. to Parklane Manor, located at 33331 Old Yale Rd. When they arrived, they discovered that two men who lived in the building had seen smoke coming from beneath the door of a third-floor suite. The pair had grabbed two fire extinguishers, forced their way into the suite and sprayed the fire. Crews put out the rest of the fire and used fans to dissipate the smoke in the suite and the hallways.

Fire officials are commending them for their quick actions, but said no one should enter a building or unit that is on fire.

“It’s extremely dangerous to go in and try to put out a fire like that on your own with extinguishers,” said Assistant Fire Chief Dave Rivett.

“These two men could have easily succumbed to the effects of smoke inhalation since they had no safety gear, and the fire could have easily spread to the hallways and adjoining units.”

The resident of the suite was not home at the time and did not have contents insurance.

Total damage is estimated at more than $50,000, with some additional smoke damage to the thirdfloor hallway.

The Crown’s evidence is “woefully inadequate” against accused killer Cody Haevischer, his lawyer Simon Buck said Monday in B.C. Supreme Court in Vancouver.

During the start of his closing submissions in the Surrey Six murder trial, Buck cited previous testimony from the Crown’s three key witnesses that he said was conflicting and unreliable.

“The Crown has focused on the amount of evidence, not the quality of evidence,” Buck said.

Haevischer and co-accused Matthew Johnston are charged with conspiracy to murder drug dealer Corey Lal and with the first-degree murder of Lal and his brother Michael, Eddie Narong, Ryan Bartolomeo and innocent victims Ed Schellenberg of Abbotsford and Chris Mohan of Surrey.

The six were fatally shot on Oct. 19, 2007 in the Balmoral Tower apartments in Surrey.

The Crown’s closing submissions were presented last week. Prosecutors allege that Lal was the target of the hit, and the other five were killed because they were witnesses.

On Monday, Buck referenced the testimony of Michael Le, who previously pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit murder in the case, and to two others who can only be identified as Person Y, who is currently serving a life sentence for two unrelated murders, and K.M., Haevischer’s former girlfriend.

Buck said among conflicting testimony from the three were statements from Le and Person Y concerning a meeting that occurred at a Korean restaurant in Cloverdale in the hours before the murders.

The Crown alleges that this was one of two restaurant meetings held to confirm plans – laid out

by Red Scorpion leader Jamie Bacon, formerly of

Abbotsford – to kill Lal, who had not paid a $100,000 “tax” ordered by Bacon.

Le testified that Johnston was at the Korean restaurant meeting, while Person Y indicated that he was not, Buck said.

The lawyer also said several conflicting statements were made by K.M. both in her discussions with police and on the stand. “(She) repeatedly lied to police ... As such, she is a person of bad character ... She was self-motivated and had no respect for the justice system,” Buck said.

He said other witness testimony revealed some conflicting information about the descriptions of three men seen in the Balmoral Tower parkade around the time of the murders.

Buck said a witness who testified to seeing three hooded and gloved men in the area was never shown a suspect lineup by police nor was she asked to point out anyone in the courtroom during her testimony.

Buck said the Crown did not present any evidence that Haevischer worked with Johnston or that he was part of the discussions about killing Lal. As well, the Crown has said Haevischer and Johnston were in the suite at the time of the killings, along with a third person, who can only be identified as Person X, but there were only two shooters.

Johnston’s lawyer, Michael Tammen, will also present his closing submissions this week.

Justice Catherine Wedge is expected to reserve her verdict until the fall.

Person X previously pleaded guilty to seconddegree murder in the case and is serving a life sentence.

Bacon will be tried separately on one count each of conspiracy to commit murder and the first-degree murder of Lal.

Another cannon misfire

When it comes to dealing with blueberry cannons, Abbotsford council is a dud.

Yet again, this group cannot find a way to take action against these incredibly invasive devices.

That’s not to say they haven’t tried – with each time ending in an ineffective stalemate.

Council was on the right track last year with a bold bylaw that would have set out strident restrictions on the blasting devices. Ultimately, it was sent to the province, which predictably rejected it as too strict.

Instead, city staff had to come up with a watered-down version.

On Monday night, council couldn’t even get the cannon-lite version onto the books.

In the tie vote, arguments were put forth that it wasn’t tough enough; was too tough; and was better than nothing.

Those who took the latter position were bang on.

This bylaw is a popgun compared to the first attempt to bring an end to propane cannons, or at least significantly muzzle them, to the relief of frazzled and frustrated residents living next to the berry farms that use them.

Even though it may be a squib, it’s a start, especially when combined with pressure on the blueberry industry to curb cannon use and encourage alternatives.

The province isn’t going to help. It clearly favours the antiquated Right to Farm Act, which allows wide latitude in the use of bird scare devices, and little to no enforcement.

Langley Township has taken a step to challenge the status quo, implementing a bylaw that allows it to further regulate the number of shots, and levy fines for non-compliance, among other conditions.

Put your heads together, mayor and councillors, and figure out a way to pull this trigger in Abbotsford.

Other Hand It’s going to be a long, slow summer now that two-kilometre-long coal trains have begun their passage through downtown Abbotsford.

At least with last weekend’s BerryBeat Festival, traffic snarls were limited to two days. Imagine what drivers are going to face up to three times a day from now until the middle of September. And if the cheers from White Rock at the lack of trains along its beachfront ring loudly enough in the boardrooms of Burlington Northern, this temporary rerouting of coal carriers just might become permanent. With Port Metro Vancouver talking of expanding shipping facilities, the frequency of trains may increase substantially.

As a reader reminded me a few weeks ago when I previously wrote about train

traffic, perhaps it is time Abbotsford, in concert with the rail companies and others, began talking about lowering the tracks through the downtown core.

Many years ago in columns and editorials written for this newspaper, I advocated dropping the tracks from their low point south of downtown to their low point north in the vicinity of Clayburn Road.

That proposal would mean a rerouting of the Southern Rail line just north of town to parallel the BNSF line adjacent to Gladys/Abbotsford-Mission Highway.

From my untrained eye, it would seem possible to lower the rail grade to the point that traffic, and development, could flow east/west completely unimpeded by the presence of rail traffic rumbling below. In fact, with a cut and cover, not only could one keep the trains moving more quickly, the land where sidings now sit idle could be developed into commercial properties.

In the days of Abbotsford’s youth, feed mills dotted the downtown area and the railway station was a vital link to the outside world thanks to the old Interurban that took farm milk and produce, along

with rural shoppers, ‘to the city’.

Time and progress has passed all that by, yet the land remains tied up, and the old downtown core divided by rail lines that will over the coming 65 days or so, generate congestion, slow business and incite driver frustration.

On the upside of this summer’s coal train traffic, Abbotsford might be spurred to get on with building the rail overpass on Vye Road.

Of course, for all that to happen, there’d first need to be a closure of one of the rail lines while it was lowered, followed by the second. It would not come cheap, but I suggest that future real estate values, economic development, improved safety, and new road traffic routing, combined with speedier flow of trains, could justify the cost.

On the upside of this summer’s coal train traffic, Abbotsford might be spurred to get on with building the rail overpass on Vye Road.

Added congestion there as cars and commercial trucks wait at the rail line, along with summer traffic heading to the border crossing, is going to make Sumas Way south truly ugly as far as congestion is concerned.

We’d all best learn to schedule our trips to Costco, Buckerfield’s and the big recycling depot on Riverside.

Regrettably, the vastly increased train traffic is occurring during a civic election year, which means that mayoral and councillor candidates will be preoccupied with getting elected/relected rather than spending time exploring long-range issues.

Then in November, when you and I and a very low percentage of voters elect a new council, they will take another year to get up to speed.

At least this time, we’ll be putting a mayor and council into office for four years, which should create a bit more stability and action between election years. markrushton@shaw.ca

So what’s all this fuss about blueberry cannons?

I don’t understand why so many people are so upset about a little noise.

As soon as the cannons start, I see people rushing around bringing their kids and pets and even their horses inside for the whole summer.

Why I’ve even seen some overly sensitive people up and move away because they say

they can’t stand the noise.

But me and my friends, we rather enjoy the cannons. Â We actually rely on them to tell us where the best blueberries are.

Sometimes we even sit on the cannons to rest up between snacks.

No, the cannons don’t bother us at all.

Ah yes, it’s great to be a starling, now that summer’s here.

An appeal to dog owners I wish to request that all dog owners not use Hoon Park or any front yards including the sidewalk along Holland Avenue for their dogs’ personal bathrooms.  Dog feces are toxic.

Please do not make the excuse that you did not know your dog was going to defecate. Really, what do you think your dog is going to do when taken for a walk?  Show some common courtesy and bring a bag when walking your dog so you can pick up your dog’s feces and take it with you to dispose of in a public garbage can. Please do not leave the feces in a bag on our front yards or in Hoon Park.

Thank you for respecting our neighbourhood – it is greatly appreciated.

Abbotsford Police are investigating a conflict between two groups of young men that has spanned the past couple of months and racked up more than 25 incidents of property damage to homes and vehicles.

Ian MacDonald said police are uncertain what started the problem, but that it isn’t gangor drug-related.

“Now it’s more about the retaliation and what happened the last time,” he said, adding that the APD is concerned that the discord between the men, ranging in age from 15 to 25 years old, now presents a public safety issue for the city.

The incidents, which began May 11, are predominantly taking place late at night, and it appears that the conflict involves two group of about 20 people each. The majority of the activity to date has involved damage to homes or vehicles connected in some way to participants in the conflict.

MacDonald said there’s a “fair amount of willful blindness” from family and friends who know about this conflict and aren’t stepping forward with details.

The APD’s major crime unit is leading the investigation, and anyone with information should call 604859-5225, text 222973 (abbypd) or call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-2228477.

An Abbotsford middle-secondary school has earned a double honour from a North American organization.

Abbotsford School for Integrated Arts (ASIA) Sumas Mountain has received the Arts Schools Network (ASN) community partnership award, and has been designated an exemplary school of the arts.

“To be acknowledged for our work is a big deal,” said school principal Marlene Funk.

With this designation, which lasts two years, other schools considering using arts-based curriculum ideas or concepts can contact ASIA for advice and insight. ASIA is one of 19 schools in North America to receive the title.

Staff have also installed students’ visual art pieces, developed a student-led arts integration workshop team and have had students perform at local businesses. Funk said ASIA also hosts music nights and festivals.

“We want our students to be the best artists they could be, and

ASIA recently graduated 48 students from its fifth class, up from seven the first year.

The ASN is a nonprofit professional organization.

The community partnership award will be presented during the annual ASN conference in October in Denver, Colo.

Kids’ drink stand raises cancer funds Three Abbotsford siblings set up a stand to sell iced tea, water and pop at Mill Lake Park recently and raised $160 for cancer research.

Mom Cheryl Harris said her kids – Preston, nine, Jamisen, seven, and Karissa, five – set up the stand in support of her cousin, who is battling a rare form of cancer.

The kids all sported yellow T-shirts – the official colour used by the Canadian Cancer Society to represent cancer awareness – and first set up the stand for two hours on June 26, raising $75.

They did it again on June 30 and collected $85.

The three decided to donate all the funds.

“I even asked if they wanted any of their earnings for their piggy bank, and they said no, they want it all to go to cancer research. I’m so proud of them,” Cheryl said.

Blacklisted businessman slips in Local MP concerned son of drug kingpin was allowed into coutnry

Abbotsford MP Ed Fast says he is “disappointed and concerned� that a Burmese businessman banned from the United States was allowed into Canada as part of an Asian trade delegation he hosted.

Fast, Canada’s international trade minister, said he had invited his government counterparts from several growing Asian nations to visit Canada for a travelling “road show� meant to deepen trade ties.

Burma’s group turned out to include Steven Law, a businessman whose deceased father was a heroin kingpin.

The U.S. Treasury department said in 2008 that Law had joined his father’s drug empire and become one of Burma’s wealthiest people.

A 2012 release called Law, with whom Amercians are banned from doing business, a “crony� of the former dictatorship. “For some reason,

this particular individual slipped through the cracks,� said Fast. “We don’t know why that happened. It concerns us.�

Fast said the procedure for vetting such individuals, saying they are the purview

of Citizenship and Immigration Canada.

Law entered Canada using his Chinese name, Lo Ping Zhong.

A Google search for that name, and other aliases, quickly turns up a bulletin from the U.S. Office of Foreign Assets

Control.

Fast said the trade missions from Burma and other Asian countries have visited Canada as part of his government’s effort to expand business ties with the rapidly growing region.

According to the TRB documents, Careen wrote to Brennan, who was the school’s vice-principal at the time, on Jan. 29 of that year to say he had received a sexually explicit text from an unidentified female.

“Although it occurred to Brennan that the text message might involve a student at the school, he took no steps to either investigate the matter further or to report the incident to the school principal,” the documents state.

Brennan co-operated with police when he was informed in April 2009 that Careen, who has since been banned from teaching, was under investigation and that a student at the school was involved.

The principal of an Abbotsford private school has been suspended from his job for one month for professional misconduct in relation to a 2009 matter involving a teacher who sent suggestive text messages to a student.

Ted Brennan’s suspension through the Teacher Regulation Branch (TRB) is in effect through July.

As an administrator at St. John Brebeuf Regional Secondary School, he was originally slated to work during this time.

The suspension relates to Brennan’s actions involving teacher Martin Careen, with whom he was friends, according to the “consent resolution agreement” from the B.C. Commissioner for Teacher Regulation.

Careen’s preliminary hearing, at the direction of the school principal, in March 2010, and was seen shaking Careen’s hand and that of his wife, Sandra.

Brennan was also seen going for lunch with Sandra and leaving the courthouse parking lot with the Careens at the end of the day.

These actions prompted a parent of the school, who was also at the courthouse, to complain to the superintendent of the Catholic Independent Schools of Vancouver Archdiocese (CISVA), saying that she saw Brennan’s actions as being openly supportive of the Careens.

Sandra Careen, also a St. John Brebeuf teacher, previously received a five-month suspension – from Sept. 1, 2013 to Jan. 31, 2014 – for failing to report to school officials that her husband had exchanged the inappropriate messages with a student.

A collection of photography by the members of the Abbotsford Photo Arts Club (APAC), the “Wandering Eye� exemplifies the skills and techniques of local photographers.

Members of APAC gather from different walks of life and their diverse perspectives of the world shape much of their work.

From the carefully directed use of light and shadow to shape their images to the spontaneous “lucky shots,� the photographers delight in capturing moments in time. Many handle their lens with tender ardor because it gives them a voice; it gives them insight, and it gives them creative energy.

The exhibit, running July 25 to Aug. 19 at Kariton Art Gallery, provides a glimpse of diverse works by photographers with a wandering eye.

Whether their photography focuses on portraiture, landscape, ab-

stracts, or action, they all share a passion in the pursuit of compelling images. They experience creative satisfaction from a dedi-

cation to their art.

Doctor joins ‘Seven Continents Club’

Completes marathons around the world

An Abbotsford doctor recently completed his goal of running a marathon on all seven continents.

Dr. Tun Zan Maung, an internal medicine physician at Abbotsford Regional Hospital (ARH), was one of 200 runners who participated in the Antarctica Marathon and Half-Marathon, earning him a place on the prestigious finishers’ list of the Seven Continents Club.

He has completed several marathons in cities around the world, starting in Vancouver in 2004 and also including

New York City, London, Athens, Paris, Singapore, Tokyo, the Gold Coast in Australia, Rio de Janeiro, and Kenya.

Maung’s work with the cardiac care unit at ARH may keep him busy, but he says he always has time for his patients.

Having worked in the community for many years, he capitalizes on his direct contact with them to encourage them to get, and stay, fit.

“I often tell my cardiac patients that if I can do it, so can they. And you know what? Some have actually taken up running,” he said.

Maung is next going to participate in the Dopey Challenge in Disney World (Florida) in January.

Runners compete in a 5-km run on Thursday, Jan. 8; a 10-km run the following day; a halfmarathon on Saturday, Jan. 10; and a full marathon on Sunday, Jan. 11.

Once he’s done with that, there is always the Polar Circle marathon in 2016 or 2017, or helping his daughter complete her goal of running a half-marathon on every continent.

“The best part is that my daughter also runs with me. We get to spend quality time together being healthy and having fun. In fact, she is about to complete her goal. Europe is the only continent left to conquer,” Maung said.

And then during injury time, Lauren Sylvan was able to break in behind the Mountain defence and struck for what turned out to be the winning goal in the 3-2 victory.

“The Mountain girls ... play very good soccer, so being able to come out with a victory – especially when it is something as big as a provincial cup – is a tremendous feat,” Marcina said.

“The season was off to a shaky start, and we did have our ups and downs and weren’t playing our greatest soccer in the beginning,” he said. “They persevered and at the end of the day, they came out with a phenomenal result.”

The win qualifies Fraser Valley FC – which is made up of players from Langley FC, Aldergrove Youth Soccer, Abbotsford’s Magnuson Ford Mariners FC and Chilliwack FC – for the national championships this October in Prince Edward Island.

Ron and Marguerite Stobbart met in Deroche, fell in love and were married on July 9th, 1945 at the Anglican Church in Mission. They built their home in Deroche and still reside there to this day.

After leaving the Army, Ron chose a career in logging at Chehalis while Marguerite stayed at home and raised their two children, Diane and Rick, and of course there was always a dog in the house. During their married life, they have honoured their vows, for richer and for poorer, in sickness and in health, and both worked very hard to provide for their family and friends.

Their love of camping, fishing and hunting, kept them busy for many, many years. They also loved travelling, and did so on many occasions. Time has now slowed them down, but their love is still strong and they are indeed growing old together.

We love you Mom and Dad, you are wonderful parents and we thank you for all you have done for us.

The Lord took unto Himself his precious daughter, Sandy (Sam) on Thursday, July 3, 2014 at the age of 64. Beloved wife to Pieter and devoted mother to Niki (Mike) and Jason. Dear stepmother to Henk (Edith), Erica (Dave), Petra (Peter), Alice (Ron), Alfred (Kirstin), and Thelma (Len). Grandma will be greatly missed by Paige, Jocelyn, Rachel, Katharine, Hannah, Scott (Chelsea), Sarah, Heather, Jennifer, Nathan (Natasha), Caleb, Ashley, Justin, Ryan, Larissa, Aidan, Amanda, Isaac and Heidi.

She was predeceased by her husband Brian Wakeford and brother Robert Fyke; survived by her stepmother Shirley Fyke, siblings Jackie (Frank), Larry (Dolly), Lynne, Wade, and niece Jasmine.

Keith was a long-time stainless steel fabricator and had many customers and friends in the industry. Working with stainless steel was Keith’s lifelong passion and one of the ways in which he was able to express himself fully.

He will be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by his wife Joanne, children Colin (Brandy), Natashya (Akiba), Cody (Mary), and Bo (Robyn), six grandchildren, extended family and many friends.

DYCK Sue April 6, 1921 - July 6, 2014

It is with grief and gladness that we’ve said goodbye to our beloved Mom, Grandma, Great-Grandma, Sister and Friend. Sue was a very sweet, loving soul towards all. She was an encourager, and to the end kept her sense of humour.

She was so loved and will be deeply missed by her family.

Sue was born in Russia and immigrated with her family as a young girl to Canada.

They settled in Winnipegosis, Manitoba as homesteaders. In 1941 she met her husband, Abe, and they started their lives together as farmers.

They moved to Clearbrook in 1956 where they owned and operated a grocery store for several years and then Abe then went into the construction industry until they both retired in 1980. They leave behind an incredible legacy of hard work, service, faith and a strong commitment to praying for family and friends. She is survived by her children, Anita (Al) Thiessen, Irvin (Patricia) Dyck, Diane (Harvey) Janzen, and Evelyn (Rick) Carter, siblings Pete, Mary, Annie, Nellie and Lydia, and 7 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren. Pre-deceased by her husband Abe (1994), brother Henry, and sisters Maria and Lena. A Celebration of Life service will be held at Henderson’s Funeral Home, 34537 Marshall Road, Abbotsford, BC on Tuesday, July 15, 2014 at 2:00 pm. The family would like to thank Hallmark Assisted Living Staff for providing a warm, caring community for her last nine years, as well as, Dr. Greyling and Cheam 2 staff at ARHCC for their excellent care.

It is with great sorrow and heartbreak to announce the passing of our loving son, brother and Uncle Greg.

Greg was a very passionate person. He had a heart of gold and always put others first.

He was passionate about film, wrestling and lacrosse. More than anything Greg adored being an uncle to nephew Cameron and niece Tharen.

Greg will be greatly missed by his parents, Tim and Jaynie Potocky, brothers Kevin (Catherine) Potocky, Kyle (Pauline) Potocky and Grant (Kelly) Potocky. Greg will also be missed by aunts, uncles, cousins and many friends.

A Memorial Service is being held Friday, July 11th at the Abbotsford Arts Centre, 2329 Crescent Way at 11:00 am.

WHEATLEY Catherine Eleanor Beloved by family and many friends, passed away unexpectedly on June 30, 2014 at St. Paul’s Hospital in Vancouver, where she was born 84 years ago on February 15, 1930. Services were held on July 6th at the Seventh Day Adventist Church in Abbotsford followed by interment at Hazelwood Cemetery. Predeceased by husband, Peter O. Wheatley, Catherine is survived by sons, Harry and Bil Phillips and step children David Wheatley, Colin Wheatley and Ann Chartier, grandchildren Alicia, Anita, Abigail and Samuel Phillips, great-grandchildren Addison Jean and Austin Willey, nieces Marci Artis and Jamie Phillips and nephews Alan Phillips, Mervin and Norman Jewkes. In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent to Adventist Aviation and Native Ministries in Alaska.

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our daughter, mother, grandma and friend. After an 8 week battle with cancer, Hazel passed away at the age of 65. She is survived by her mom Agnes, daughter Karen (James), and grandkids, Caleb and Hannah. A memorial service will be held July 10, at 2:00 pm at Calvin Presbyterian Church in Abbotsford.

Lily passed away peacefully June 15th and went home to be with her Lord and Savior.

There will be music in heaven if mom has anything to do with it. Lily was born to the late Grietje and Cornelis Kaijk - August 2nd, 1923 in The Hague, Netherlands. Mom received her education in The Hague, and graduated in 1940 just prior to WWII. She is predeceased by her brother Kees Kaijk of The Netherlands. She married the late Albert Cornelius in February of 1947.

Together they lived briefly in The Hague before moving to Indonesia because dad was a ‘rubber planter’. In 1952 they immigrated to Vancouver, Canada and then relocated to Edmonton in the mid 50s.

Lily always had a determined and feisty spirit to make the best she could of the challenges life circumstances presented her family. From the time they came to Canada she worked at a variety of accounting positions in order

In Edmonton, Mom and Dad made many good friends and especially with those that shared the bond immigrating to Canada from The Netherlands and with the Indonesian link. They shared many stories of the past and ate many “Indonesian” meals together.

We always felt that the time in Indonesia was a very special time in her life.

Lily is survived by her two children: Yvonne M. Hayden (Art) of Abbotsford, BC, and Albert C. Van Ramshorst (Ursula) of Spruce Grove, Alberta. She also is survived by her five grandchildren (Paul Van Ramshorst, Chris Van Ramshorst, Cara Butt, Leah Bertsch and Andrea Kew) and seven great-grandchildren.

Ruhr, Margaret (Peggy) (nee Jones) March 23, 1944 - June 23, 2014

With heavy hearts, we announce the sudden passing of our much-loved wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. Peggy passed away peacefully with family at her side at the Abbotsford Regional Hospital and Cancer Centre after a seemingly brief battle with cancer.

Peggy was born in Nipawin, Saskatchewan to Bill and Irene Jones, the first of three daughters. She will be sadly missed but cherished in memory by Merv, her husband of 52 years, daughter Shari, son Kelly and daughter-in-law Pam, as well as her much-adored grandchildren Kaitlyn (Josh), Chelsey, Samuel and Stella and great grandchildren Emma and Mason. Peggy also leaves behind sisters Lorrie and Marlene (Daryl) and brother-in-law Lindsay and numerous nieces and cousins who share our loss.

She was a loving, caring, generous and kind soul who will be dearly missed by her many relatives and friends living across Canada. Peggy was predeceased by her parents and brother Trevor.

Peggy grew up in Nipawin, lived in Saskatoon, Calgary, Langley and Ottawa before moving back to B.C. and Abbotsford where she has lived for the past 32 years. She enjoyed her jobs managing a Beauty Salon business, a

gourmet Kitchen store and lastly a management/buyer career in Ladies’ Fashions.

Peggy was an excellent cook and hostess, well known for wonderful entertaining during holidays and family celebrations.

She very much loved to travel, beginning with camping trips when the kids were young, and ultimately holidaying in the Maritimes, Florida, Arizona, California, Mexico and Hawaii locations, as well as cruises to the Caribbean and Panama Canal. Peggy also accompanied Merv on many motorcycle trips when touring as a member of the Blue Knights Law Enforcement Motorcycle Club until her health would no longer allow it .

A highlight of Peggy’s life was when she accompanied her sister Lorrie on a two and a half month walk, each step of the way, for 1880 kms through Alberta and Saskatchewan in the Spring of 2001. Lorrie is afflicted with Parkinson’s Disease and the ‘Walk’ under the sponsorship of the Parkinson’s Disease Foundation was for the purpose of raising awareness, education and funds.

It was Peggy’s wish that there not be a service. It was her wish, as well, that her ashes will be spread at Candle Lake, Saskatchewan where she spent many happy summers.

Must be able to work nexible hours in a variety of conditions. Experience working with materials handling equipment would be an asset.

Minimum requirements include completion of ITA certimcate of qualimcation as heavy duty equipment mechanic, inter-provincial red seal endorsement, and a certimcate of apprenticeship. A minimum of 5 years work experience in a related industry is required.
