Ceremonies were held on Friday, July 4, at Kennedy Hall in Cranbrook for the latest graduates of the Cranbrook RCMP Auxiliary Constables program. The five men passed the Auxiliary Constable entrance interview some six months ago, and have undergone intensive training since then, mastering the skills of effective presentation, physical training, drill marching, directing traffic and self-defence. The new Auxiliary Constables are A/Cst. Jeff Young, A/Cst. Travis Markin, A/Cst. Chad Dueck, A/Cst. Aaron Nicholls and A/Cst. Rowdy Cook. Also pictured are Cst. Kimberley Search and Rescue members, assisted by numerous search and rescue teams around the East Kootenay, are actively searching ground and water in the St. Mary River area for 23-year-old Alex Brown. Brown is not a resident of Kimberley but was visiting family, who live in town. Kimberley RCMP Cpl. Chris

Newel says that Brown was reported to have jumped into the St. Mary River on Saturday, July 5 shortly after 7 p.m. “Police were notified by a friend who observed Alex jump into the St Mary River approximately 15 kilometres upstream from Marysville near Kimberley,” Newel said. “Alex surfaced after jumping in, but then disappeared from sight. “Search and Rescue teams began searching the river Saturday night. They continued through Sunday with teams from Kimberley, Cranbrook, Fernie, Sparwood, Columbia Valley and Nelson.

B.C.’s Premier Christy Clark will be in Cranbrook on Thursday, July 10. The Premier will speak at a special luncheon that is jointly hosted by the Cranbrook and District Chamber of Commerce and the Rotary Club of Cranbrook. She will “provide an update on the B.C. government’s work to control spending, grow the economy, and get to yes on economic develop-

ment projects.” The luncheon will be held at the Heritage Inn on Thursday, July 10.

Premier Clark was last in Cranbrook and Kimberley in the leadup to the May 2013 provincial election. On April 30, 2013, she toured Fab Rite Services in Cranbrook, the Snowdrift Cafe in Kimberley, and held a political rally at the Heritage in Cranbrook.
