2014 The 2014 Scotiabank Canadian Open Fastpitch International Championship Softball stars from across the globe are getting ready to play ball at the 2014 Scotiabank Canadian Open Fastpitch International Championship.

Taking place from July 11 to 21 at three Surrey-based venues, this world-class championship is the largest softball event of its kind in the country.

This year, the participating teams will vie for championship titles in five different divisions: Women’s division, Futures Gold and Select divisions, and Showcase Gold and Select divisions. More than 1,300 athletes will compete in over 350 ballgames throughout the course of the 11-day event.

“We are looking forward to another outstanding year for the Scotiabank Canadian Open Fastpitch International Championship,” said Greg Timm, President & Chairman of the Canadian Open Fastpitch Society. “Expect to see a lot of amazing international talent in addition to some promising young rising stars from all over British Columbia.”

The Women’s Championship will take place from July 12 – 21, and will welcome some of the top national teams from around the world including Team Canada, Team Japan, Team USA, and Team Mexico.

Canada’s entry in the tournament will feature many familiar faces to longtime Canadian Open Fastpitch spectators, including North Delta native, Jen Yee, who has been a member of the Canadian National Team since 2007 and played in the 2008 Olympics, as well as Joey Lye, one of the team’s core players and leaders.

The Women’s Championship will also include International Club team, Spain –

Basque Country, and North American Club teams Bloomington Lady Hearts, NJCAA All Stars, and the returning favourite, the White Rock Renegades.

“We are dedicated to providing these high-calibre female athletes with the opportunity to represent their respective countries in a fun, competitive, and professionally organized tournament, and to also measure themselves against the best of the best,” added Timm. “These accomplished women also provide inspiration and mentorship to young aspiring softball players and encourage them to always strive for and reach their personal best.”

For the Futures (U19) division, there will be a Futures Gold Championship from July 14 – 20, and a Futures Select Championship, running from July 17 – 20. The Showcase (16U) players will also take part in two separate tournaments: the Showcase Gold will play from July 11 – 16 and the

Showcase Select division will take the field from July 11 – 14. Both tournaments provide a unique opportunity for young softball players to be noticed for their talents and will feature plenty of homegrown talent, with teams including Fleetwood Force, Cloverdale Fury, PoCo Ravens, Delta Heat, South Surrey Thunder, and Surrey Storm, just to name a few.

“The Canadian Open Fastpitch Society invites hundreds of college and university scouts to the tournament, which gives players an excellent opportunity to be recognized and considered for scholarships to some of North America’s top schools,” added Timm.

The Women’s division games will take place at Softball City. Other venues for the 2014 Canadian Open Fastpitch include Cloverdale Athletic Park (6330 168 St) and Sunnyside Park (15455 26 Ave).

Welcoming the World’s Top Players to Surrey The 2014 Scotiabank Canadian Open Fastpitch International Championship is honoured to welcome talented teams from around the world, playing in the Women’s Championship from July 12 – 21.

As one of the top ranked softball teams in the world based on the 2012 ISF Women’s World Softball Championship standings, the team fought some strong battles in last year’s championship, finishing in the top four at the end of the event. Having an entire year to prepare for the 2014 Scotiabank Canadian Open Fastpitch International Championship, Team Canada will be fighting to win the Championship with lots of support from their home crowd in this year’s games.

Currently ranked number one in the world based on their performance at the 2012 ISF Women’s World Softball Championship, Team Japan is back and ready to take the championship title for the fourth consecutive year as Canadian Open Fastpitch International Champions. Last year, the gold medal game was a tightly contested one, as it went into extra innings after a scoreless draw in regulation time.

Team Japan was able to secure their gold medal in what was a phenomenal ball game for both teams and spectators alike.

Team USA is ready to take on the challenge to earn the top spot at the 2014 Canadian Open Fastpitch International Championship. Last year, the semi-final game saw Team USA and Team Australia go head-to-head for the chance to compete for the top spot. The dramatic semi-final game went into extra innings, and Team USA finished strong with a bronze medal. This year, they are ready to hit the field running as they strive to claim the top spot.

Returning to Softball City after an absence at the 2013 tournament, Team Mexico will be bringing their A-game to the diamond, looking to earn a place in the finals. In 2012 they made it to the playoffs where they finished in the top 6 in the Women’s Elite Division.

This year the Women’s Division will also showcase International and North America Club teams, as they play for the top spot in this level of high-intensity competition:

July 14 – July 20 and Showcase Gold: July 11 – July 16 The Futures and Showcase Gold Divisions are comprised of some of the top club teams from around the United States and Canada.

July 17 – July 20 and Showcase Select: July 11 – July 14 The Futures Select (U19) International Championship will be a tightly contested battle between players under 19 years of age on participating BC teams as well as teams from the Pacific Northwest region.

The Futures Gold (U19) International Championship will feature the top North American teams, as well as the New Zealand National Youth Team, who will all be vying for the title of 2014 Scotiabank Canadian Open Fastpitch International Champion. The Showcase Gold (16U) International Championship is the place to catch the rising stars of softball on local teams from the United States and Canada.

The Showcase Select (16U) International Championship displays the top up-andcoming talent aged 16 and under playing on teams from Canada and the United States.

Youth

CAN LEARN FROM THE BEST PLAYERS IN THE WORLD

Girls and boys ages eight to 16 are invited to play ball with the world’s finest softball stars from the Women’s Division with a series of Youth Softball Clinics.

These clinics are a great opportunity for participants to learn techniques and strategies from top athletes on Team Canada, Team Japan, Team USA, and Team Mexico, and to hear inspiring stories of perseverance, dedication, and unwavering passion.

Clinics run daily from July 15 through to July 18, 9:00am – 11:30am at Sunnyside Park. The cost of each clinic is $50 CAD per child per clinic, or $165 per child for all four clinics. Participants will

receive a complimentary t-shirt and one complimentary child/teen admission for the 2014 Scotiabank Canadian Open Fastpitch International Championship, valid for use on July 16.

Canadian Open Fastpitch teams hosting the Youth Clinics include Team Mexico (July 15), Team USA (July 16), Team Canada (July 17), and Team Japan (July 18).

Those who are too young to participate in the Youth Clinics, or are being introduced to the sport of softball for the first time, can also join in on the fun, as Softball BC and Canadian Open Fastpitch will host the Learn to Play Softball Clinics on July 12 (9:00am – 12:30pm) and July 19 (1:00pm – 4:30pm). Participants will receive a complimentary t-shirt and the opportunity to join the Parade of Athletes on July 16.

(Toronto, ON) Lye grew up in Toronto and competed in a total of twelve Canadian Championships across all age categories since 2000, winning a medal in eleven of those events (gold in 2003, 2004 and 2006; silver in 2000, 2001, 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2010; and bronze in 2005 and 2012). She was named the tournament’s All-Star Team at the 2009 Junior Women’s Canadian Championship as well as the 2011 and 2012 Senior Women’s Canadian Championships, taking home the Most Valuable Player award of the qualifying round in 2011 as a member of the Pickering Heat.

(Toronto, ON) Caira played her minor softball as a member of the Markham Jaguars of Softball Ontario’s Provincial Women’s Softball Association (PWSA), winning back-toback U16 Girl’s Canadian Championships in 2004 and 2005 immediately followed by back-to-back U19 Women’s Canadian Championships in 2006 and 2007. With all that success at the national level, Caira went on to represent Canada at the 2007 ISF Junior Women’s World Championship, where the team finished fifth, and went on to earn a spot on the Senior Women’s National Team in 2009.

At the collegiate level, Lye attended Williams College in Williamstown, Massachusetts, competing in both softball and ice hockey in NCAA Division III. She was a four-time All-NESCAC and NFCA New England Region First Team shortstop, and set five all-time school records in batting average (.457), runs scored (150), hits (211), total bases (267) and stolen bases (62). In her senior season, she led the nation with a .563 batting average and set school records for batting average and stolen bases (22) in a season, and went on to become the 2009 NESCAC and ECAC Division III New England Player of the Year. She was also selected as an NFCA Second Team AllAmerican in 2008. After completing her collegiate degree, she went on to serve two years coaching the Williams College softball and hockey teams, and recently completed her third season as head coach of Stevenson University’s softball team, where she also serves as an assistant hockey coach.

Caira played four years of NCAA Division 1 softball as a member of Syracuse University from 2009 to 2012, where she accumulated over 1,000 strikeouts (1,043). She is the only Big East pitcher to ever reach that milestone, and is Syracuse’s all-time leader in most pitching categories including wins, strikeouts, starts, saves and innings pitched.

Since joining the Canadian Senior Women’s National Team in 2009, Caira has established herself as one of the world’s top pitchers. Entering her sixth season, she has represented Canada at two ISF Women’s World Championships, winning bronze in Caracas in 2010 and finishing fourth in Whitehorse in 2012.

She also competed at the 2009 and 2013 Pan American Softball Championships, as well as the 2011 Pan American Games, winning silver at all three of those events.

Victoria Hayward

Lye earned a spot on Canada’s Senior Women’s National Team in 2010. Since that time, she has developed into a fantastic utility player for the team and has become one of the team’s heart and soul players. She was a member of the Canadian Senior Women’s National Team that won bronze at the 2010 ISF Women’s World Championship in Caracas, and led all hitters with a .611 batting average at the 2012 ISF Women’s World Championship in Whitehorse. Lye also helped Canada to a silver medal at the 2011 Pan American Games, and attended the 2011 International Softball Federation Congress as an athlete representative.

(Toronto, ON) Hayward was born in Toronto before her family moved to Mountain View, California, where she went on to star as a member of the Mountain View High School softball team from 2007 to 2010, earning Most Valuable Player honours in her final season. After joining the Senior Women’s National Team in 2009, Hayward won a bronze medal as a member of Team Canada at the 2010 ISF Women’s World Championship in Caracas, and went on to compete as a member of both the Junior and Senior Women’s National Teams in 2010 and 2011. As a member of the Junior Women’s National Team, she won silver medals at the 2010 Pan American Qualifier in Bogota and the 2011 Canadian Open Fastpitch International Championship, and finished fifth at the 2011 ISF Junior Women’s World Championship in Cape Town. She also competed as a member of the Senior Women’s National Team at the 2009 and 2013 Pan American Softball Championships, as well as the 2011 Pan American Games – winning silver at all three of those events – and also competed at the 2012 ISF Women’s World Championship in Whitehorse.

Caitlin Lever (Buffalo, NY) The daughter of longtime NHL player and coach Don Lever, Caitlin Lever grew up playing softball in Buffalo, New York and holds dual citizenship. In high school, she earned All-State softball honours in her junior and senior seasons, leading her team to the State title in 2000 and earning New York State Class B Softball Player of the Year honours.

Lever’s collegiate career began at Canisius College in 2004 before transferring to Georgia Tech, where she went on to leave her mark on the school’s softball record books. In her senior year, she was a top 10 finalist for USA Collegiate Player of the Year, took home first team All-American honours and was named to her third AllACC selection.

Lever joined the Canadian Senior Women’s National Team in 2008, immediately earning a spot with Team Canada at the Olympic Games in Beijing. An excellent contact hitter and outstanding

centerfielder, Lever was a key player in each of the last two ISF Women’s World Championships, delivering key hits to help Canada earn the bronze medal in 2010 and hitting .467 at the event in 2012, where Canada finished fourth. In addition to those World Championships, Lever competed at the 2009 and 2013 Pan American Softball Championships – winning silver at both – as well as numerous US World Cups and Canadian Open Fastpitch International Championships.

National Team in 2007, winning a silver medal at the Pan American Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and a gold medal at the Universiade (World University Games) later that same year. She competed in the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, where Canada finished fourth, and won another silver medal at the 2011 Pan American Games in Guadalajara, Mexico. Timpf was also a member of the 2009 and 2013 Pan American Championship teams that won silver, and played in the 2012 ISF Women’s World Championship.

Megan Timpf (Port Dover, ON) Timpf is a veteran member of the Senior Women’s National Team, and has been involved with the program since 2005. She grew up in Port Dover, ON and played most of her minor softball with the Brampton Blazers, competing at the 2001 and 2003 Midget Girls Canadian Championships (won bronze in 2003). She also won gold at the 2000 Eastern Canadian Softball Championship, and competed at the 2003 Canada Cup as a member of the Whitby Eagles.

She began her collegiate softball career at Campbell University, and transferred to California University of Pennsylvania for her two final years of eligibility. At Campbell, she hit .305 as a sophomore with seven doubles, four triples, a homerun and drove in nine runs in 29 games in a reserve role. At Cal U, she hit .323 with seven homeruns, 32 runs batted in, 41 runs and only struck out 14 times in 226 at-bats over two seasons, and was named to the All-PSAC team as a shortstop in 2006. After completing her eligibility, she spent two seasons as an assistant coach at Indiana University of Pennsylvania, and has held that position at Barry University in Hollywood, Florida since 2012.

Timpf began her involvement with the Canadian Women’s National Team program as a member of the Development Team in 2005 and 2006, where she competed in two Canada Cups. She joined the Senior Women’s

Award. She transferred to Georgia Tech in 2007 and immediately put her mark on the school record books, breaking the single-season record in at-bats and with an 18-game hitting streak. In her senior year, she reached base safely in all 62 games she played and led all NCAA hitters in batting average (.538), slugging percentage (1.270), on-base percentage (.732), runs scored (93) and walks (88), and also tied for first with 29 homeruns. With those outstanding numbers, she was a Top 3 Finalist for the 2010 NCAA Player of the Year Award and was named the 2010 ACC Player of the Year.

Jen Yee (North Delta, BC) A longtime member of the Canadian Women’s National Team program and one of the most feared hitters in the world, Yee started playing softball at the age of six and played her minor softball within the Delta Heat and Surrey Storm organizations. She won a bronze medal at the 2003 Bantam Girls Canadian Championship and finished fourth at the 2006 Midget Girls Canadian Championship, when she was named to the All-Star team. She also competed in the Futures division of the Canada Cup in 2004 and 2005 – winning the homerun derby in each of those events – and won gold as a member of Team British Columbia at the 2005 Canada Summer Games.

At the international level, Yee was a member of the 2004 and 2006 Canadian Development teams, and joined the Senior Women’s National Team in 2007.

She led Canada with a .348 batting average, one homerun and five RBIs in eight games played at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, and also earned a pair of silver medals at the 2007 and 2011 Pan American Games. She was also a key member of the 2010 and 2012 ISF Women’s World Championships, helping lead Canada to a bronze medal in 2010, and won gold at the 2007 Universiade.

Yee has competed at several other international tournaments throughout her time with the Canadian National Team, and also spent part of the 2013 season playing professionally in Japan.
