Rimbey RCMP take part in Canada Day festivities held at Pas Ka Poo Park Rimbey RCMP detachment investigated over 50 files this week. Highlights include a reported hostage taking, illegal firearms, drugs, sexual assault, break and enter and other serious matters.

Hostage taking On Thursday evening, June 26, a man called 911 to report his wife had been taken hostage and was being held at knife point. Mounties immediately responded to the area and contained a rural farm west of town. During the course of the investigation, a local man was found to be armed with a loaded firearm. Officers from Sylvan Lake, Ponoka and other jurisdictions assisted Rimbey members by briefly closing Highway 53 in order to keep officers and the general public safe until the matter was resolved. A 47-year-old man, a resident of Ponoka County, peacefully gave himself up and was arrested without further incident. Two firearms and ammunition were seized from the scene. Alcohol was a factor in this case. Charges are pending the outcome of the investigation.

An alert member of Gull Lake North Citizens on Patrol (COP) called police to report a suspicious vehicle in the lake area. Police patrolling the neighbourhood received another tip of a possible impaired driver in the same area. Officers located a 48-year-old man, a resident of Ponoka County, intoxicated in his vehicle.

The accused was arrested and charged for impaired driving and blew a staggering 270 mg% on the breathalyser. The accused’s pickup truck was also impounded.

Impaired driver charged June 30, at approximately 3:15 p.m., police, fire and EMS personnel responded to a rollover on Leedale Road. At that same time, police observed a man stumbling into a liquor store in town after he nearly fell out of his pickup truck parked out front. With enough resources responding to the collision, the officer returned to the liquor store to stop the man from driving but found he had already left. Police patrolled the area and located the 47-year-old man driving home to his residence just west of town. The driver was arrested and

charged with impaired driving and blew nearly double the legal limit before he even had a chance to open his newly purchased bottle of Vodka. Police seized and impounded the accused’s truck and his license was immediately suspended. No one was seriously injured in the rollover.

Now that Parliament has recessed for the summer I would like to take this opportunity to provide an update on some important legislation that has now become law.

At the end of the Parliamentary session MP Blaine it seems that there is Calkins always an influx of legislation that gets passed and sometimes the details of Bills passed are lost in the shuffle, our Government passed into law 25 pieces of legislation during the last session.

One key piece of legislation was Bill C-23, the Fair Elections Act which will protect the integrity of our democracy by requiring voters to provide ID before voting, removing the risky practice of Vouching and empowers law enforcement with sharper teeth, a longer reach and a freer hand.

Another key piece of legislation that will become law is Bill C-24, Strengthening Canadian Citizenship Act which will increase efficiency of the citizenship program in order to reduce backlogs, reinforce the values of citizenship by strengthening requirements and deterring citizenship of convenience; improve the tools we have to maintain program integrity and combat fraud; and promote Canadians interests by honouring those who serve Canada and protecting Canadians from foreign criminals and those who pose a threat to our national security.

Additionally my colleagues and I passed the Budget Bill which will see unprecedented funding levels for Alberta. All major transfers to provinces and territories will grow from their current record levels representing a 56% increase since 2006-06. For Alberta, total major transfers will total $52 billion in 2014-15 including $3.7 billion through the Canada Health Transfer which represents an increase of over 129% since 2005-06 and

$1.5 billion through the Canadian Social Transfer an increase of $878 million or almost 148% since 2005-06.

In addition to the Government Legislation we passed this session, several key Private Members Bills were passed into law. Bill C-444 sponsored

by Red Deer MP Earl Dreeshen amends the Criminal Code of Canada with respect to personating a Peace Officer or Public Officer. C-444 establishes that personating a Peace Officer or Public Officer in order to commit another offence shall be considered by a court to be an aggravating circumstance; by changing this it allows judges to impose longer sentences up to respective maximums.

My colleague Parm Gill sponsored Bill C-394 Criminal Organization Recruitment is aimed at keeping our kids out of gangs and punishing those

that try to recruit them into criminal organizations.

Under this Bill someone that recruits a young person into a criminal enterprise will be facing a sentence up to five years in prison.

Our Government is focused on what matters most to Canadians, we are working hard to keep Canadians safe, pay lower taxes and provide longterm prosperity for all Canadians. We will continue to deliver on our commitments.

New Rimbey CAO begins job July 2

Lucien Cloutier has taken over as CAO for the town and is eager to get down to business.

He began his job July 2, but was officially welcomed by Mayor Rick Pankiw at the Canada Day celebrations held at Pas Ka Poo Park, July 1.

“We have felt very welcomed here by the peo-

ple of the Town of Rimbey,” Cloutier said. “Everyone seems so warm and sincere.”

Cloutier has moved to Rimbey with his wife Dayna and their family. The couple has a blended family consisting of Dustin, 20, Jesse, 18, Rachel, 17, Aaron, 15 months and the youngest, Abigal, who is five months.

Fourteen years go he served as CAO for the Village of Boyle.

“Oddly enough I started that job on July 2 as well,” he recalled.

However, after spending some time as CAO in Boyle he decided to pursue a different area of municipal government and returned to his hometown of Lac La Biche where he was manager of legislative services for several years.

Three years ago he moved to Valleyview where he had the position of

In the course of his career he has worn several hats including development officer and human resource personal.

He also attended the University of Alberta facility extension to receive his Level 1 and Level 2 designation as a local government manager.

“My area of expertise is working with council processes and dealing with the critical documents of the municipality; also the liaison and technical legal aspects.” When Cloutier is not hard at work at the corner office in town hall or spending time with his family he likes being out on the golf course and also enjoys curling and going to auctions.

He is looking forward to meeting the residents of Rimbey and says his door is always open.

“My objective is to be as accessible as possible. I’m here to serve the community to the best of my ability.”

Canada Day in Rimbey was bigger and better than ever

By Treena Mielke The birthday party Rimbey threw for Canada this year, was at least by some accounts, bigger and better than ever.

“There was an amazing, wonderful turnout,” said Cheryl Jones, administrator for the Rimbey Historical Society. “The weather was amazing and we had 46 volunteers helping out.

“It was a good day all around.”

Jones said Legion members came out in full force and she was pleased

Canada Day also marked the re-opening of the military museum at the park.

“It was very well received,” she said.

For Lucien Cloutier, the new CAO for the Town of Rimbey, the Canada Day festivities were truly enjoyable.

“We were all there for the pancake breakfast,” he said, noting that some members of his family returned home as they are in the process of moving.

2014 grads leave legacy in Bentley

By June Norvila The 2014 Bentley graduation exercises took place on the evening of June 26 at the Blindman Valley Ag Centre. There was a catered meal by Bob Ronnie Catering for the 30 graduates, and multitude of families and friends, school staff and dignitaries.

The meal was followed by the processional and the formal graduation ceremony.

The theme chosen by the 2014 class was

‘Leaving a Legacy’.

Grads sat at a head table along the west wall with a backdrop of mini-lights shining through gold fabric with the theme showing through in black lettering.

Masters of Ceremonies for the banquet were Grade 11 students Kai Poffenroth and Savanna Spendiff with grace said by Caleb Schmidt from the Bentley Youth Group.

The Toast to the Parents was given by graduates Hayley Bickford, and Spencer

He explained to the grads that they should fill their lives with the big, more important things like family first and leave the little, least important things like fashion until last, or there might not be enough room for the most important things.

Class historians Nathan Dennehy, Carson Schneider, and Haleigh Reid shared a short musing, usually a comical one, about each of the classmates with the crowded hall full of well-wishers.

Class valedictorian Elizabeth Keller said she had set a goal for herself to be the class valedictorian back when she was in Grade 7 and she did it! She spoke of setting goals in life and leaving a legacy, and thanked the parents and teachers who inspired them.

Rimbey’s path to the future!

Rimbey was originally known as Kansas Ridge and was given the name Rimbey in 1904. The town was named after the Rimbey family who settled in the area after leaving the United States.

The Town of Rimbey has a long and colourful history

By Treena Mielke In 1904, a tiny settlement called Kansas Ridge located at the junction of highways 20 and 53 was officially given a new name.

It was called Rimbey.

Located in the Blindman River valley area, approximately 62 kilometres northwest of Red Deer and 145 kilometres southwest of Edmonton, the newborn town was about to begin creating its own history.

The town was named after Sam, Ben and Jim Rimbey, brothers who moved to Canada from Scott County, Illinois, having moved to Illinois in the 1830s from Maryland.

Change came to the town in 1919 when

the Lacombe and Blindman Valley Electric Railway (later part of the Canadian Pacific Railway) reached Rimbey. The town’s population expanded to 319 people when two grain companies built elevators the following year.

The Second World War brought changes again, and when the war ended some young men who had made Rimbey their home returned.

Some did not.

By 1946 the population was 634.

Throughout the years, the farming community has continued to grow, attracting young families and new businesses. It now boasts a population of about 2,500.

It is a well maintained little town,

nestled quietly in the richness of Alberta’s farmland where oil and gas pump jacks are busily at work, a constant reminder of the diversity of wealth the province has to offer.

The town has full amenities including hotels, motels, grocery and convenience e stores and liquor stores and a campground.

It also has its own hospital and ambulance and law and order is kept by its very own detachment of the Roy Canadian Mounted Police.

Attractions include Pas-Ka-Poo Park with its large open lawns, a historical village site, museums and a wide array of interesting displays, including the World’s Largest Collection of International Trucks in the Smithson International Truck Mu-

seum.

The town’s aquatic centre is open from May to August every year and includes a junior Olympic pool, two hot tubs, a double loop waterslide and a 2,100 ft (640 m)2 splash pad.

The Beatty House is a historical house in the centre of town which houses the tourist booth in the summer and can be booked for tours or to house social events.

A multi-purpose motorsport facility, Central Alberta Raceways, is located east of Rimbey. It has been home to the annual Kinsmen Demolition Derby event since 2002 and its first oval race event was held in 2005. Its motocross track received a facelift in 2012.

Pas Ka Poo Park provides a historical snapshot of Rimbey

The Kansas Ridge School, built in 1902, reminds visitors of school days of long ago.

The Rimbey town office, built as a residence in 1915, prior to becoming the town office and Rimbey’s first church, the Church of Epiphany, built in 1908 using vertical logs, add an interesting addition to the historical village.

Cheryl Jones, administrator for the Rimbey Historical Society, said several events are planned at the park for the next few months to provide fun and entertainment.

A Booknic will be held Aug. 22 and a cultural café focusing on Africa is planned for the evening of Aug. 8.

Farmers’ markets will be held every Saturday at the park, unless the weather is unfavorable, until October.

Weddings, mystery tours and senior tours are all part of the exciting scenario at Pas Ka Poo Park throughout the summer.

The grounds of the park are beautified by hanging baskets supplied by Holly’s Greenhouse and volunteers from the Horticultural Society who plant lovely flowers.

Artifact donations and volunteer help are always welcome at Pas Ka Poo Park.

Boys and Girls Club expands its program into summer months

By Treena Mielke With summer here, the children of Rimbey and area have plenty of time to be out in the great outdoors or having fun participating in indoor programs.

The Boys and Girls Club of Wolf Creek is geared up to meet the needs of the youngsters in the area, with indoor and outdoor activities, and have a great summer program planned.

Co-ordinator Annette Peck said plans are in place for a Tuesday and Thursday full day summer program. For children six to 12, planned activities include theme days, trips to the pool every Thursday, games at Pas Ka Poo, a talent show, arts and crafts, science experiments, bowling and

much more.

The program is to run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and the cost is minimal.

Registration is necessary.

“It will be on a first come-first serve basis and you may select individual days until we reach a maximum of 20 participants,” said Peck.

For the teens in the community, the MidWeek Mash Up held at the Youth Action Centre on Wednesdays from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. will be ongoing.

This program offers free games, contests,

spots, snacks, special guests and events throughout the summer.

“This is a great way for the teens to stay in touch with old friends and make some new ones over the holidays,” said Peck.

The first four months of the Boys and Girls Club went over well, she added.

“We are extremely grateful for the support we received from so many people in the community.

We had great success with both Terrific Tuesdays and mid-week mash-up. Although the numbers changed from week to week, we have had up to 50 Rimbey youth at once for Terrific Tuesdays and up to 11 for the Mid-Week Mash Up.” Peck said both programs offer high quality

experiences for Rimbey youth.

This summer, Jeanine Went will run the summer program.

“We are very pleased to have her before she begins her two-year teaching contract in China,” said Peck. “We are confident she will be a great asset to our program.”

More volunteers for both programs are needed, she added.

“Even helping out once a month would be greatly appreciated.”

Rodeo action coming to town soon

By Treena Mielke Get ready for some fast, furious and exciting rodeo entertainment here in the heart of Rimbey.

Rimbey rodeo is coming to town July 11 to 13 and promises to bring with it lots of thrills, spills and excitement.

The rodeo will kick off with a pancake breakfast sponsored by Rimbey Co-op and Servus Credit Union in the Co-op parking lot from 7:30 to 10 a.m. Friday.

The local rodeo will begin at 6 p.m. Friday, and the CARA (Central Alberta Rodeo Association) sanctioned rodeo is to begin at 1 p.m. on Saturday and again at 1 p.m. Sunday.

Gary Gross, the announcer for the International Indian Finals Rodeo and World Professional Chuckwagon Association is the rodeo announcer.

The clown is Ricky Ticky Wanchuk, a wellknown rodeo personality who keeps the crowd entertained and laughing while he attends to the more serious job of ensuring competitors are safe.

Each day, rodeo action will be preceded the grand entry led by the rodeo queen.

Mini donuts and other concessions will be set up at the rodeo grounds.

A parade, sponsored y the Town of Rimbey, will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, July 12.

• We have two broad types of camping “vehicle-access” and “backcountry”.

Equipment/People Permitted on a Campsite • The maximum number of motor vehicles, tents, recreational vehicles and trailers permitted on a campsite is three, of which only two may be used as sleeping quarters.

• The camping fee applies to each accommodation unit on a campsite. EXCEPTION - if the second accommodation unit is a tent and there is only one motor vehicle registered to the site, there is no additional

charge for the tent.

Bentley Fair and Rodeo brings fun and excitement to town

By Treena Mielke The Bentley Fair and Rodeo, a great August attraction in central rural Alberta, is coming up soon.

The theme for the fair and rodeo to be held Aug. 7 to 10 is Bentley and District Fire Department.

Activities will kick off Thursday with a pancake breakfast in the parking lot of the town office.

The parade will follow at 1 p.m.

A senior pie social, bench show, kid’s wool bustin’ and the children’s magic show will be part the afternoon events.

A family concert featuring HOJA, a cappella group will be held at the Ag Centre at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday. One-Way Traffic will open for HOJA. A concession will be available.

On Friday and Saturday a pancake breakfast will be serviced. The CARA sanctioned rodeo will begin at 6 p.m.

A car show, farmers’ market in the curling rink and horseshoe tournament will provide entertainment and fun for everyone on Saturday. The

horseshoe tournament, which begins at 10 a.m. will conclude Sunday.

The Blindman Valley bazaArt show and sale will be held at the old community hall from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday.

Also on Saturday, the fire department will hold its hamburger and hotdog barbecue from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Also on that day a triple bungee run and jostling competition will be held at the Ag Centre from noon to 4 p.m. Giggles Own Bounce House will be set up south of the curling rink from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Children’s activities will be ongoing at the library.

The day will conclude with fireworks and the movie Despicable Me 2 will be shown on the grain elevators.

Activities will wind down Sunday with an interdenominational church service to be held at 10 a.m. at Bentley Community Church. A potluck lunch will follow the church service.

The Bentley Museum will be open Aug. 7 to 10 in conjunction with the fair and rodeo.

Beatty House reflects Rimbey’s history

By Treena Mielke The fact that Rimbey residents take pride in their town and its history is evident in the stately Beatty House located on the north side of Main Street.

The Beatty House has a long and colourful history which has been kept alive thanks to the Beatty House Society who has dedicated time and funds to restoring and keeping the home and grounds well maintained and in their original state.

The original owners, Jack and Violet Beatty came to Rimbey from Saskatchewan in 1919, opening a hardware store. The store later became known as Beatty and Cotton hardware when Jack partnered with Wilfred Cotton.

The couple, who remained childless throughout their marriage, lived above the hardware store until their home and the store were destroyed by a raging fire in the early 1920s.

A local carpenter who was hired to construct a modern home in keeping with the stature of a successful businessman, built the Beatty House in 1925.

The carpenter, Joe Jones, preceded to do just that.

The home he constructed a one and a half storey

semi-bungalow built in the Craftsman style.

Jack Beatty lived with his wife Violet in the house until he died in the 1950s and Violet lived in the house until 1984.

When she died the house was handed down to relatives who later sold it to the Town of Rimbey.

The house was left vacant for two years and it appeared that its future was in jeopardy.

However, a group of nine concerned citizens rallied together and the Beatty Historic House Society was officially created and in 1991 the house was designated as a Registered Historic Resource.

Now restored to its original solid craftsmanship and character, the house has become a special place for the entire community to enjoy.

Weddings, family celebrations, business meetings, garden parties and live theatre takes place here.

In the summer the Beatty House is home to the Rimbey tourist information centre which is open daily 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.

The Beatty House Society will be busy on parade day July 12, serving its usual fare of hotdogs and smokies and all the delicious fixings that go with them. Lunch is to follow the parade.

The Beatty House is a popular place after the Rimbey Rodeo parade when hotdogs and smokies are served.

RCMP ensure safety of boaters and swimmers during summer months

By Treena Mielke With summer here, the Rimbey RCMP is out in full force doing their part to protect campers and boaters, ensuring rules and regulations are being upheld and all can enjoy the wonderful holiday season.

Mounties continued to work closely with conservation officers and fish and wildlife officers in the Medicine Lake and Gull Lake areas.

Rimbey RCMP often take their own commercial vessel, a 17-foot Titan out on

the water to do random patrols to ensure boaters are wearing proper lifejackets, using correct paddles, a proper bailing device and are licensed small vessel operators.

Sgt. Mark Groves said boat patrols indicate that about 40 per cent of boaters are not in compliance with boating regulations.

He added that there is zero tolerance for boat operators regarding alcohol and open liquor in a boat is illegal.

“Alcohol is involved in more than 30 per cent of all drownings,” he said.

Fishing without a license is another infraction, which can result in a hefty fine and a court appearance.

Complaints about the use of ATVs on public land are a consistent problem, damaging the environment, colliding, driving while impaired and disturbing families that are camping.

He urges people to use common sense and let someone know where they are going when they decide to go camping or otherwise disappear for a few days.

By Treena Mielke Rimbey, a quiet, friendly little town nestled in the heart of rural Alberta, remains a solid symbol of good old-fashioned friendliness and down home hospitality.

Rimbey is located about 40 kilometres north of Sylvan Lake just west of Hwy. 20.

The town is vibrant and active, and activities and events are ongoing year round.

The picturesque and charming Pas Ka Poo Park is home to many of Rimbey’s historical buildings and includes museums, a pavilion and an enclosed playground. A visit to Pas Ka Poo Park is truly a step into the past and is both educational and interesting.

Minor ball teams are once again playing in Bentley and the ball diamonds have been busy. There has been no organized minor ball in Bentley for many years. One estimate was for as long as 20 years or more.

This year there were three teams of Bentley Blue Jays” as they are all called - the Mosquitoes (7-9 year olds), the Pee Wees (10-13 year olds) and a U-16 girls softball team, who all played on the town’s big west ball diamonds.

The Mosquitoes and Pee Wees were registered with Baseball Alberta and were involved in travelling leagues that played against teams from places such as Rocky, Spruceview, Eckville, Rimbey, Drayton Valley and Sylvan Lake.

There was also a team of Rally Caps for the four to seven year olds. They didn’t play in the travelling league but were practicing the basics at the high school diamond.

The girls U-16 softball team was registered with Softball Canada. They played league games and two tournaments. A highlight for the girl’s team was not placing second, but was winning the Fair Play Award from amongst 28 teams when they attended the Serenity Landry Memorial Tournament in Edmonton.

“The majority of the children have never played ball, so all accomplishments, both wins and losses, attendance at away games, and sportsmanship are commended and appreciated,” said Alexis Screpnek, Bentley Minor Ball president.

Initial organizers were very pleased with the interest shown and the number who registered back in early March. A total of 56 children registered with BMB. An executive was established and they registered their teams with Baseball Alberta and Softball Canada.

New equipment including bats, balls, back-catcher gear, bases and team uniforms were purchased with help from generous donors that included Crossfire Directional Drilling, TR Transport Inc., Team Works Fabricating Ltd., Servus Credit Union, ATB Financial, Sun Haven RV & Boat Storage, Hunter Hydro Vac Inc., and Signs and Custom Design of Lacombe whom Screpnek said “were just doing it for the kids, to see them outside playing and having fun, and having the (Bentley) diamonds used.”

She added “The Town of Bentley has been very accommodating with mowing the ball diamonds, allowing BMB to use the shed at the north end of the arena to store field equipment, and for letting BMB lock the gates to the fields to minimize maintenance.”

The Bentley executive is president Alexis Screpnek, vice-president Karen Jaffray, registrar/secretary Debbie Gerrits, treasurer Joanne Varga, and director Erin Vert.

Bentley umpires for the Mosquito and Pee Wee games were Caleb Johnson, Josh Johnson, Mr. Allen Elliot and Derrick Hislop. Umpires from the Red Deer Softball Umpire Association travelled to Bentley to ump the softball games.

All volunteers including coaches, managers, assistant coaches, and everyone who helped with scorekeeping, keeping track of equipment, driving, and even doing the diamond leveling and chalking and line marking deserve kudos.

The season for BMB officially ended at the end of June with league playoffs.

As a fundraiser Bentley Minor Ball will host the pancake breakfast on the Thursday morning of the Bentley Fair & Rodeo August 7 to raise money which may go towards a batting cage or a ball pitcher machine.

Rimbey Canada Day celebrations amaze everyone Continued from Page 8 However, he spent several hours at the festivities and was impressed not only by the event itself, but by the people who stepped up to the plate to make it all happen.

“I was overwhelmed by how varied and how many activities there were and the level of volunteerism,” he said. “It appeared to me that it was very well organized and included so many aspects and catered to all the different age groups. Actually, I was just blown away by the show of community spirit. I really enjoyed myself and I was very impressed.”

The Cultural Café with a focus on Korea, sponsored by the Rimbey Library, was the highlight of Canada Day for Junnie Chung.

Chung and her husband Steven Yoon own Rimbey Foods and this is the second Canada Day they have experienced while living in the community.

“Of course, we were excited about it for some

time,” she said. “And we were also curious as to how many people would come.”

Chung said she was so pleased that a good crowd showed up and that the traditional dances and songs truly reflected the culture. She noted that Yeon-Sook Park, who owns the Grand Hotel in Rimbey with her husband John Um, directed the concert and is a most talented lady.

“We appreciated it and were honored for this opportunity to have the event here,” she said. “It was very meaningful.”

Librarian Jean Keetch said the cultural café was a great addition to the Canada Day festivities.

“It was wonderful. We had 182 people and everyone said they absolutely loved it.”

Keetch noted the library sponsored the event and received a federal grant to help with the costs, but the Korean community provided traditional Korean dishes.

“It was an amazing evening.”

By Leah Trenson The Bluffton 4-H club finished the year with lots of fun events. On May 3 we participated in highway cleanup. We cleaned Highway 20 for sixteen kilometers. Our show and sale was on May 11 and 12. The cattle all looked great. Thank you to our buyers and sponsors. You are very much appreciated.

On June 8 we toured the Ronald McDonald House in Red Deer and presented our donation of $1,000 to the facility. On June 14 we had our awards banquet.

We had an awesome year and look forward to next year.

By Teri Ormberg The 4-H Award of Excellence is a series of four awards (bronze, silver, gold and platinum) that recognizes 4-H member’s project work, leadership and community service achievements.

The awards are distributed on the basis of a member’s accumulated points from his or her yearly 4-H diary.

To receive a bronze award 90 points are needed which takes approximately three years to obtain. A silver award requires 150 points and takes four to five years to obtain. The recipient of a gold award must have 220 points and takes six to seven years to acquire.

A platinum award is given out if the recipient has 320 points and takes approximately eight or more years to achieve.

The 4-H Alberta Awards of Excellence major sponsors are ATB Agriculture, Canada Safeway, Government of Alberta - Alberta Agriculture and Rural Development, PennWest Exploration and 4-H Partners (4-H Branch, Alberta 4-H Council and 4-H Foundation of Alberta). Since the pro-

gram’s inception in 1988, over 22,000 medallions have been presented.

A member must fill out a diary for each year he or she has been in 4-H to be eligible to receive an award. The club leader checks over the forms and confirms the points.

Erica Trenson of the Rimbey Club received her Platinum award (highest honour) for the year ending 2012-2013. Erica has been a 4-H member for seven years. Others receiving their awards from the Rimbey Club are Gold: Megan Valstar and Cassidy Valstar who achieved a gold award. Bentley students receive awards at graduation ceremonies

By June Norvila Awards were handed out during the school’s graduation celebration held recently.

The class valedictorian Elizabeth Keller received the Governor Generals Award, the highest mark in social 30 and highest mark in English 30 from presenter teacher Jason Hazlett, highest mark in math 30 & 31, from presenter teacher Brenda Von Kuster, and highest mark in sciences from presenters, teacher Michael Sonnenberg and Bentley Ag Society Vice President James Taylor.

The ATA Award (presenter Lane Moore) was won by Robyn Shannon and the leadership award (presenters teachers Joan Gammie and Jill Howe)

by Carson Schneider.

The Wolf Creek CTS Scholarship for trades went to Cheryl Tudhope and the Wolf Creek Scholarships for going on to a college or university to Cassandra Ruud & Haleigh Reid (presenters Lane Moore and school trustee Pam Hansen).

Both the Bentley Ag Society Scholarship (presenters Jason Hazlett and James Taylor) and the Bentley Seed Cleaning Plant Scholarship (presenter Lane Moore) went to Hayley Bickford.

The Sunny 94 Scholarship (presenter Lane Moore) recipient was Bayleigh Franz and the Lifetouch Scholarship winner (presenter teacher Lee Varty) was Char-Lee Ruud.

Carissa Derksen was the Cheryl Screpnek Humanitarian Award winner (presenter Sherry Haarstad).

For athletics (presenter assistant principal Stephen Lush), major award winners were Cassandra Ruud, Char-Lee Ruud, Hayley Bickford, Matthew Day, Nathan Dennehy, Spencer Holden, Kolton Hueppelsheuser, and Carson Schneider, with a minor award to Haleigh Reid.

The outstanding female athlete (presenters Stephen Lush and Royal Purple representative Julie Potter) was Hayley Bickford and the Outstanding Male Athlete (presenters Stephen Lush and Elks representative Lynda Haarstad-Petten) was Kolton Hueppelsheuser.

Hayley Bickford and Spencer Holden won the female and male Bentley Library Society Best All Around Student Awards (presenters Lane Moore and Bentley Library Society chairperson Shirley Talsma) and the Sylvan Lake Rotary Club ‘PRIDE’ Awards (presenters Lane Moore and Sylvan Lake Rotary Club representative Joyce Megson) went to Cole MacKenzie and Carson Schneider.

Rutherford Scholarship recipients for receiving marks of 80 per cent or higher were Hayley Bickford, Carissa Derksen, Bayleigh Franz, Spencer Holden, Elizabeth Keller, Cole MacKenzie, Kacey Maerz, and Kash Philibert, and for achieving marks of 75 to-79.9 per cent were Emily Albers, Haleigh Reid, Cassandra Ruud, and Char-Lee Ruud.

DEDEURWAERDER In Loving Memory of Remi Dedeurwaerder of Rimbey, Alberta who passed away suddenly and unexpectedly, following the swift onset of leukemia, at the Red Deer Regional Hospital Centre, Red Deer on Monday, June 30, 2014 at the age of 80 years.

Remi was born in Zarren, Belgium on August 8, 1933, and in his early twenties he moved to Africa where he resided for 12 years.

He was united in marriage to Cecilia DeVos-VanMaele on May 16, 1959 in Zaire, Africa. Together, Remi and Cecilia moved to Canada and settled on a small farm south of Rimbey on February 19, 1969. Remi worked as a mechanic, drove school bus, and for a number of years he was employed with Canada Post as a clerk in the post office. Remi also farmed, and took great pleasure from the land. His greatest love though, was working the farm side-by-side with his son, Chris. They shared a special and very close bond, and loved spending time together.

Remi lived his life on his own terms, remaining on the farm after Cecilia passed away and living independently until the very end. Remi loved being with his son, he was passionate about being on the farm, and he enjoyed driving around, and visiting people and having coffee.

Remi will be lovingly remembered and dearly missed by his son, Chris (Karen) Dedeurwaerder of Rimbey; as well as one brother-in-law, Anton David of Belgium; and his niece, Genoveva David, also of Belgium. He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Cecilia in 1998; his parents; one brother, Andre; and two sisters, Hilda Dedeurwaerder and Jeanne David.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Margaret’s Catholic Church, Rimbey on Thursday, July 10, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. with the Reverend Gabriel Udeh, Celebrant.

Interment will follow in St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery, Bluffton. If friends desire, memorial tributes in Remi’s Memory may be made directly to the Prostate Cancer Centre, Southern Alberta Institute of Urology, Rockyview General Hospital, 6500 - 7007 14 Street S.W, Calgary, Alberta T2V 1P9.
