It was a Canada Day to remember in Victoria for all the right reasons.

Thousands descended in the Inner Harbour area Tuesday for day-long activities, culminating with more than 40,000 on hand for the fireworks display, up slightly from last year, say officials.

Victoria police said there were fewer problems than in previous years too. Police spokesperson Mike Russell said just over two dozen people were taken into custody.

“This year we saw lots of enthusiastic people, but less intoxicated people,” said Charlayne ThorntonJoe, Canada Day organizer.

Although official numbers have not yet arrived, the annual living flag turnout is estimated to have been between 2,500 and 3,000, making Victoria the likely victor over rival city Winnipeg.

Pride Week culminates with parade, festival Victoria’s annual Pride Week ends Sunday (July 6) with a parade through downtown, from Government Street and Pandora Avenue to MacDonald Park, where the week’s events will culminate with the Pride Festival.

The parade is held as a march of solidarity between B.C.’s LGBTQ community, local businesses, and non-profit organizations.

It starts at noon, when participants will gather at the 1400 block of Broad Street.

The festival will take place from 1 to 6 p.m. at MacDonald Park, the destination of the parade. Pride Week organizers Victoria Pride Society boast 150 vendors this year, in addition to musical acts and a 3000-person beer garden. There will also be attractions geared towards children.

Victoria Pride Society will be continuing work on their history project at the festival, where a booth will be available for visitors to share stories of the city’s early LGBTQ community with practicum student Nicole Naud. The group hopes to collect stories, photographs and videos for a multimedia history project set to debut at next year’s festival.

The Capital Mental Health Association, which runs MacCaulay Lodge, provides services to more than 800 adults with mental health challenges across Greater Victoria.

Shakespeare by the Sea returns this summer, with two new plays being performed at Clover Point.

And while the players will be returning to the tent, director Robert Light has bigger plans for the future— a to-scale replica of Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre.

Light plans for the temporary venue to be three stories high and true to the London original, though constructed mainly of plywood in order to make assembly and disassembly each summer easier.

With proper funding, around $200,000, Light estimated, Victoria could have its own Globe Theatre in three to five years—at least for two months of the year.

“Using tents gives the performances a very modern feel,” Light said, “but when we say you can walk through Shakespeare’s doors, right into renaissance England, people get very excited.”

This year, Light will be returning to the usual tent to direct both plays: Macbeth and The Comedy of Errors. Light previously directed A Midsummer Night’s Dream in

2011 and 2012, as well as Romeo and Juliet in 2012.

While the venue may have not changed, the crew will make use of three new fulcrumoperated instruments, which will allow Macbeth’s witches to “fly”

Long way to go on mental illness

Few can argue that mental illness touches everyone.

There are, of course, those who have been diagnosed. Then there are their children, siblings, parents, friends and co-workers.

Even complete strangers are often hit with the ripples, as society bears the burden of missed work days, medical visits, inadequate treatment options, etc.

It doesn’t matter that research has led to many strategies and treatments that can help sufferers live productive, even normal, lives.

Perhaps if it felt easier to talk openly about mental illness, things would be different.

For those directly affected, it can feel simpler to try to ignore the reality.

While there have been great strides in the realm of mental illness, society still has a hard time accepting it as a disease.

‘Mental illness’ is still a phrase that doesn’t dare get said in polite company.

But slowly that shroud is lifting.

Some people are becoming more brave to step into the spotlight, to talk about their own struggles.

Clara Hughes, for instance. The former Canadian Olympic cyclist and speedskater shared the story of her own family’s battles with mental illness as she cycled 12,000 kms across Canada. Clara’s “Big Ride” concluded on July 1 in Ottawa and connected with more than 23,000 young people in 105 communities.

People like Hughes, and those enduring their challenges less publicly, know the difference that acceptance—both of the conditions and the person trying to live with them—makes, and we can all learn from them.

But there is still a long way to go.

No one should feel the need to hide something they cannot control.

The reality is, many of us share the blame for the fact so many people do just that.

One of the big questions asked in the days after the Tsilhqot’in decision was this: Is the Northern Gateway pipeline project dead?

None of the aboriginal communities along the pipeline route has this kind of declared aboriginal title. Few if any would have a similar strength of claim as the Tsilhqot’in, who fought a small war to defend their territory from a wave of gold seekers in the 1860s.

One that does is the Haida Nation, whose occupation of a beautiful group of islands was long defended militarily, and never challenged by any other aboriginal group.

Among others, the Haida Nation was represented in the Tsilhqot’in case as interveners. Council of the Haida Nation president Peter Lantin said after the decision that his team is preparing its own aboriginal title case for trial.

Few doubt that this assertion of title will be successful, either by negotiation or court ruling. But there is a unique aspect to the Haida claim that would set another precedent.

They claim title to the ocean around Haida Gwaii, a challenge to anyone wishing to sail tankers through.

LETTERS More clarity sought on smoke-free bylaw Victoria lags behind other B.C. cities when it comes to outdoor protection from cigarette smoke. There are already 23 B.C. municipalities with park bans including Duncan, Nanaimo, Osoyoos, Port Moody, Salmon Arm, Tofino and Vancouver.

Only 16 per cent of British Columbians continue to smoke, according to Stats Canada. The 84 per cent of us who don’t smoke will undoubtedly know the health risks. We will also recognize the diseases caused by second-hand exposure to cigarette smoke: stroke, sudden infant death syndrome, coronary heart disease, lung cancer, low birth weight, and respiratory illness.

While the evidence is hazy around e-cigarette use and second-hand exposure to their byproducts, several studies suggest that e-cigarettes do expose people to airborne nicotine and carcinogens and impair air quality. The research is not yet conclusive, but suggestive, on the potential harms of e-cigarettes.

E-cigarettes are new, unregulated and a conundrum for policymakers and business owners.

On July 9t, the Capital Regional District has the opportunity to protect children and adults at parks, playgrounds, beaches, squares, bus stops and outdoor events this summer.

The evidence of harm is clear for cigarettes and suggestive for e-cigs. Let’s have clarity and include e-cigarettes in the amendment to the smoke-free bylaw.

Editorial added nothing to education debate Re: Year-end strike is unethical (Our View, June 18) The inflammatory polemic of this editorial adds nothing to the issue.

The public school teachers and their students I know are genuinely suffering from the arrogance of an employer directed by a cynical provincial government to withhold wages and divert those monies into a flagging provincial economy.

The 9-speed automatic shifts quickly and smoothly, in fact I forgot it had so many cogs but it does improve fuel economy with a highway rating of 6.4L/100km with the 4-cylinder and 7.0L with the V6.

Jeep has included three AWD systems.

The first is a called Active Drive 1 with a selectable drive mode called Select-Terrain, for automatic, snow, mud and sand settings. The second is called Active Drive 2 and offers a two-speed mode for low speed crawling. The most aggressive system is Active Drive Lock, which comes in the off-road purpose-built Cherokee called Trailhawk. The Trailhawk is a ‘real’ Jeep; this is thanks to a locking rear differential and a host of electronic aids. The most impressive feature is the low speed crawling mode for both up and down hill tasks. Therefore, Jeep purists, yes there is a Cherokee for you.

Verdict This new Cherokee is off to a fantastic start. Sales are strong and the sharp design is bringing in buyers, not shoving them away. The 2014 Cherokee could not be further away from the last model; this is a thoroughly modern SUV with go-anywhere capability and aroundtown refinement that needs to be experienced.

A gathering of Jaguars Jaguars on the Island 2014 is the largest Jaguar Clubs of North America-sanctioned Jaguar car show in all of North America. Owners of more than 100 classic Jaguar motorcars will gather on the grass at Windsor Park in Oak Bay on Saturday, July 26 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

This year will feature classic Jaguar luxury sedans from the early years through to the Mark IX of 1961. A variety of other models will be there including the famous E-Type roadster

and coupe, the fifties XK models, the XJS and the new F-Type. Some of the cars will be entered to be judged with the majority being entered in the Enthusiast class for display. Jaguar owners who would like to register to display their car can refer to www. jaguarcarclub.ca .

The general public will be welcome at Windsor Park at no charge to see all the Jaguars and take pictures.

The Victoria Youth Musical Theatre Company will be celebrating its 10th season this summer with a production of West Side Story.

Part of VYMTC’s summer camp program, the cast of 28 actors, aged 12-17, will spend 10 days in rehearsal before hitting the stage for four shows at Ridge Playhouse at Claremont School, 4980 Wesley Rd. Based on Romeo and Juliet, the play centres on two rival gangs living in mid-1950s New York City. Despite debuting in 1957, producer Phil Hallman said the play remains popular even with younger audiences.

“When the kids found out we were doing West Side Story they were very happy,” Hallman said. “We even received 10 more registrations than usual.”

The role of Tony will be played by Ethan Otto, a 16-year-old stu-

dent from St. Michael’s University School, while Ashley Richter, a 14-year-old student from Victoria High will play Maria.

West Side Story will debut on July 10 at 7:30

p.m. and run nightly until July 12, with an additional matinee on July 13 at 2:30 p.m. Tickets are $12 and available at the door. Please call 250-882-7234. reporter@vicnews.com

STEADY MARKET CONDITIONS IDEAL FOR BUYING, SELLING IN VICTORIA The Victoria Real Estate Board has released its monthly report, and with it good news for buyers and sellers.

The report shows that 680 properties were sold in June this year, a 2.4 per cent increase from the 664 sold in June last year.

Home sales were down five per cent from May, which is typical as summer approaches.

Overall, 2014 has shown an 8.9 per cent increase in year-to-date sales compared to 2013, with May and June 2014 the highest sales months Victoria realtors have seen since the spring of 2010.

In a real estate market as pricey as Greater Victoria’s, getting your foot in the door can be a challenge, especially for young families.

As home prices have crept higher, it often comes down to weighing needs and wants to choose what is most important – a more expensive neighbourhood closer to town, meaning a smaller, older home, for example, or the opportunity to get more home for the money but live farther from downtown?

“If they’re willing to look for something older and do some fixing up, there are areas like Glanford that are popular in Saanich,” says Tim Ayres, president of the Greater Victoria Real Estate Board. However, for many younger buyers with families, “I still think that if they want the picket fence and yard, they’re going to have to look to the West Shore.”

Responding to market needs, more developers, builders and even existing homeowners are building options for these younger buyers, particularly those looking beyond the condo market for a property to suit a growing family.

In new construction,

“there’s a lot of variety out there for families and entrylevel homes,” says Casey Edge, executive director, Victoria Home Builders Association.

Since 2007, the region has seen a decrease in new home prices, though largely due to lower labour and material costs, not land costs, Edge says. As the market and economy continue to improve, these costs will rise again.

What has stayed relatively untouched is the low interest rates that help offset the region’s high real

estate prices.

The B.C. Real Estate Association expects B.C. housing starts to rise approximately two per cent in both 2014 and 2015, thanks to an expected acceleration of economic growth and employment.

Looking beyond 2015, however, strong growth in the 20- to 44-year-old demographic is expected “to put pressure on new home inventories and drive up new construction activity, particularly multiple units that cater to price-sensitive first-time buyers,” the asso-

The Greater Victoria townhouse market, for example, is “definitely seeing a bit of an uptake in sales and building,” Ayres says.

Where condominiums catering to young families have been seen in the Vancouver area, for example, here on the south Island, builders have focused more on townhomes, small-footprint single-family homes, and in more established areas, infill projects of small multi-family projects.

While townhomes and

condominiums can have a pricepoint appealing to first-time buyers, they also bring additional costs such as strata fees. The trade-off is the freedom from yardwork and maintenance that comes with a single-family home.

Falling in the middle are some of the small-lot homes with minimal, easy-care landscaping. However, in family-friendly communities such as Westhills, parks, playgrounds and recreation areas are nearby, offering plenty of opportunities to get outside.

While a great deal of new building is keeping the West Shore real estate market hopping, other areas of the Capital Region are seeing their own opportunities for more affordable housing. In some areas of Saanich, for example, it’s not unusual to see a single-family home on a large lot rezoned to allow a second attached home, effectively creating a duplex that doesn’t look like the standard mirror-image duplex. Though still falling under strata rules and with some shared expenses, duplexes typically don’t have strata fees and offer more of a single-family experience with a little property.

In communities that have allowed secondary suites, or unique options such as “carriage house” accommodation or garden suites, these mortgage-helpers allow younger buyers even more options.

Verdict This new Cherokee is off to a fantastic start. Sales are strong and the sharp design is bringing in buyers, not shoving them away. The 2014 Cherokee could not be further away from the last model; this is a thoroughly modern SUV with go-anywhere capability and aroundtown refinement that needs to be experienced.

The explosion of utility terrain vehicles on the market the last five years has been incredible.

Popularity has never been this high. The 2014 Polaris RZR XP 1000 is at the top of its class. Rarely do you see a UTV like this offered to the public. Often you would have to go to a Baja race to see these machines perform. 0-30 in 2.26 seconds and 0-50 in 5.33 seconds without any aftermarket add-ons. Wow. The XP delivers excitement at any speed. The on demand AWD system makes cornering at high speeds incredibly easy.

The long travel suspension makes the bumps feel like pebbles on a highway.

All the instruments are conveniently located so you can access them quickly without losing site of the trail ahead of you. I noticed how much leg room the XP has leg. After having driven an earlier model that was always a concern.

Interior The interior features a high performance tilt able steering wheel that is easy to grip and performs very well at high speeds. LED interior lights and very comfortable seats that have being beefed up to hold you in position and feature a new dry seat technology the resists moisture. They also have sliders on them to adjust for legroom. The factory installed doors have an easy one handed security latch and offer an optional accessory lower door section which I recommend to purchase right away. This keeps a lot of debris of your legs.

Having driven many offroad vehicles in my career and in many challenging conditions, I found UTVs to be an extension to the offroad experience. You can go places that you would not normally attempt because of road conditions or overgrown vegetation that limits most vehicles without extensive body damage.

The fact you can take a partner along with you in an open-air cockpit is a big plus and really adds another dimension to 4 wheeling.

Although this model is a high-end machine there are plenty of other makes a models at reasonable prices that you can check out at your local ATV shop. Watch out for local ride-and-drive events then go out and experience one for yourself.

You may just find out how much fun life can be!

Chrysler 200 similar but better than its predecessor Bob McHugh The Chrysler 200 was introduced for the 2011 model year and replaced the outgoing Sebring.

It’s available as a midsized sedan, with coupe-like styling and a roomy interior, as a hard or soft top convertible with two doors and four seats.

The 200 is based on the same chassis as the outgoing Sebring but came with revised suspension geometry, stiffer body mounts, a raised roll centre, new sway bars and a wider rear track to improve both its ride and handling. There were also extensive upgrades to reduce cabin noise and these included acoustic lamination of the front door windows and windshield.

The 2011 edition of 200 came in base LX, Touring, Limited and top-line S trim levels. The base engine is a 173-horsepower, 2.4-litre, 16-valve four-cylinder. A carry-over engine from Sebring, it provides good low-end torque, decent fuel economy and is mated with a reliable four-speed automatic. City/highway fuel economy is 9.9/6.7 L/100km. Even the LX edition of the 200 comes

with a very good equipment package that includes a tilt and telescoping steering wheel, four-wheel disc brakes with an anti-lock system, remote keyless entry with a security alarm, power windows, locks and mirrors (heated) and air conditioning.

The optional and newer 3.6-litre (Pentastar) V6 was a powertrain offering that came with a six-speed automatic. A quieter and smoother performer than the four-cylinder, this V6 can effortlessly produce 283 horsepower. Highway fuel economy (6.8 L/100km) is also impressive and almost the same as the base four-cylinder. Its city rating, however, is 11.0 L/100km.

The Chrysler 200 Convertible was available with the choice of two automatic-latching power tops. There’s a light-weight fabric-top with a glass back window or a (body colour) fully-retractable steel hardtop. Both types of folding top can also be lowered or raised remotely via the owner’s key fob, which is a neat feature.

In addition to being less expensive, the fabric-top is more compact when folded and allows more cargo space in the trunk.

The hard-top, on the other hand, can provide a quieter cabin for occupants while driving and it’s more secure when parked.

Active safety improved

from a buyer perspective, and there appears to be a good supply of sedans, but not too many convertibles, out there for sale.

The Limited trim level (see price check chart) visually adds 18-inch polished aluminum wheels, dual exhaust tailpipes and inside upgrades include leather-faced seats. Like most Chrysler products the 200 offers high content and value, and it’s a good looking car.

Consumer Reports rates the 200 as “below average” for predicted reliability, “above average” for owner satisfaction and “average” for owner costs.

Safety Recalls: 2011 & 2012 Chrysler 200 2011: A pivot rivet on the steering column may be missing or incorrectly installed and this increases the risk of driver injury in a crash. Dealers will inspect for steering column rivet presence and alignment, and repair as required.

2011/2012/2013: The airbag warning lamp may illuminate due to an electrical fault within the Occupant Restraint Control (ORC) module and the Active Head Restraints may not deploy during a rear impact collision.

Dealers will reprogram the Totally Integrated Power Module or replace the ORC module, as required.

2012: The 3.6 litre V6 engine may have debris in the cylinder block from the manufacturing process and this could cause connecting rod bearing and crankshaft bearing damage. Dealers will replace the engine assembly.

2013: Certain vehicles may experience fuel leakage or engine stall due to a broken control valve in the fuel tank assembly. Dealers will inspect and if the control valve is damaged, the fuel tank assembly and vapour canister will be replaced.

2013: Some vehicles equipped with the 2.4 litre engine may experience a loss of oil pressure and subsequent engine failure. Dealers will replace the balance shaft module.
