A golden age of food and drink?

hey come and they don’t go. Not for long, anyway.

This valley has revealed flavours so tempting it’s lured chefs from just about everywhere imagineable, and kept them.

And, as those chefs planted roots in Kelowna, this city’s status as a culinary hotspot continued to grow.

On the surface it’s an unlikely place for such a status—the Okanagan once seemed destined to play second fiddle to urban hubs on the West Coast in everything from its economic to cultural offerings, despite an abundance of natural wealth.

into haute cuisine on local tables. As one person described it, local cuisine was once about as cutting edge as a butter knife.

But Kelowna changed. At first the emerging culinary scene was revealed as a side dish to wine lovers who had their palates tantalized at small restaurants where talented chefs were honing their craft alongside wine makers.

These days, this city has emerged as a full fledged foodie destination.

Creating food culture in the Okanagan Kathy Michaels STAFF REPORTERS

W

hether you’re in the hills exploring wineries, walking the main strip downtown or even at the farmers’ market, it’s apparent Kelowna is exploding with delectable concoctions made according to the gospel of eating local.

Chefs are tapping into a cadre of farmers committed to growing produce with maximum flavour. Relationships have also been forged with small beef, poultry, lamb and pork producers and a robust complement of artisanal cheese-makers and bakers, leading to an explosion of culinary creativity.

According to Nancy Cameron of Tourism Kelowna, that natural synergy between food producers and chefs has given way to something everyone in the valley is benefiting from.

“The farm-to-table concept is a big component of our marketing,” said Cameron, noting that it has been a focal point for Kelowna and Lake Country for the last four years.

“The value of knowing how your food is produced and the path it takes to the table is more and more important. It’s moved into a desirable experience that people are travelling for.”

Go to any number of spots plating that philosophy this time of year, and its lure is apparent. Outside Raudz or Waterfront Wines downtown, there’s continual movement from both loyal and curious clientele ready to indulge in some seasonal fare. Gatzke Orchards has a whole summer lineup of events where the farm-to-table fans flock. In the hills above the valley, numerous winery chefs are also closing the gap between where the food is made and served with an increasingly Okanagan-esque panache.

According to one of the forefathers of the farm-to-table movement in B.C., what’s happening on local tables may not be new, per se, but with Okanagan chefs delving into what’s best in this area, they’re raising the standard for the entire industry. Knowing how to do that properly, however, takes a delicate touch.

“It’s about common sense and supporting your community. So you base your menus around what farmers can grow successfully,” said Bernard Casavant, Okanagan College’s new culinary manager and the head of the Okanagan Chefs’ Association.

A walk through the farmer’s market on a Saturday morning and see beautiful golden peppers and organic onions, sweet tomatoes, microgreens, squash and bell peppers, all in peak ripeness, is to have some idea of what common sense looks like on one of Casavant’s menus.

“I look for that spark…What’s going to give me the jump on the creativity and quality,” he said.

It’s the type of detail that helped Casavant gain notoriety and challenge the old guard of European chefs as his career took off in the 1990s. He eked out a Canadian culinary identity when he represented this country at the most prestigious gastronomic competition in the world, the Bocuse d’Or. His

dishes, inspired by local and regional foods, taught him there are opportunities to grow creatively when you’re rooted in the land.

A humble but rewarding way of life that’s B.C. at its core.

“I come from Port Alberni, where my mother canned salmon and had a root cellar. Those were common sense times,” he said.

He still hasn’t let go of the island ethos. Casavant does his own canning and has even mastered new jar-free canning techniques that he’s passed on to his many apprentices over the years, not to mention the growing number of students who seek out his tutelage at Okanagan College.

They, he said like a proud parent,

are at the helm of world-class kitchens up and down the valley.

Pride in the community of cooks is something that clearly sustains Casavant, and he’s found lots of places to find cause for more. In his role as the president of the Okanagan Chefs Association, in particular, he’s given a wider view of all that’s happening behind the scenes with local cuisine.

“The membership is such a great organization. We just came back from the National Chef Challenge in Ottawa, and everyone was saying how are we so vibrant and asking how are we doing this,” he said. “I was there with the last three presidents, and I said ‘it’s these gentlemen right here.’”

“Our local movement is really

broadcasting to the world. We have fantastic products, pride and passion. Our junior membership is such a strong contingent of chefs.”

With their spare time, Kelowna chefs are getting to know the ins and outs of the community, even offering cooking and preserving lessons at local shelters while tantalizing the taste buds of the paying community. All of it, combined with the natural bounty, is based in what Casavant describes as “understanding your sense of place.”

“What we’re able to produce, in terms of tree fruits, stone fruits, micro greens and lettuces, organic and traditional vegetables; coupled with the other artisanal producers and our wine and tourism sector, that’s why the Okanagan has such great recognition across Canada and the Western United States,” he said.

“It’s the locality of it. You’re not trying to be everything to everybody.

If you’re in Italy, you’re not going out for schnitzel and spaetzle. You eat for where you are, the places that my wife and I look for when we travel are the local places doing it well.”

With more people “doing it well” with locally grown fare, an appreciation for food culture flourished, whetting this community’s appetite for more.

It’s something that downtown businesses were able to adapt to in recent years.

At last count there were around 90 restaurants in Kelowna’s hub. With a recent renovation to Bernard Avenue, outdoor eating opportunities grew, too. Ryan Watters, communications manager of the Downtown Kelowna Association, said there are 50 patios open and it’s really helping to liven up downtown foodie culture.

“The interaction one gets when they’re outside in the community, eating at the same restaurants, is great,” he said. “Conversations naturally pop up between tables, and it’s nice to hear.”

Further signs of that growing fondness for a shared dining experience is Le Dîner en Blanc. The third incarnation of the local event, that was born in France 25 years ago, will be held in Kelowna next weekend. Somewhere in the area of 600 Kelowna residents will gather at a yet-to-be-disclosed location for a night of dinner, dance and drink, all in white.

A rift between Kelowna Farmers and Crafters market vendors caused by a disagreement about the future location of the organization has been formalized into an official split, with some growers branching out into a new co-operative.

Mark Pigott, a spokesperson for the endeavour

tentatively expected to open at the Urban Square market next year, said it’s only a matter of weeks until the paperwork is completed and the new co-operative is made official.

“It will be a new name and a new concept and it will be a much broader farmers’ market concept than what’s currently in Kelowna,” said Pigott.

The main aim of the co-operative, he said, is to increase the profile and significance of small scale growers in the region.

“Right now the existing farmers market, which has been around for a long time and is well received, is somewhere vendors go two days a week and display their produce, people buy it and leave,” he said.

“So the relationship between the vendors and the community is really just transactional. In our judgement it doesn’t extend far enough into the realm of what we believe the farmers’ market represents.”

Local growers, he said, are a draw for tourism, a boon to the economy and critical for food supply and security.

To ensure that they have a place moving forward, the new co-operative will work to deepen ties to the community they’ve already become a part of, such as the Okanagan Chef Association, those who put on wine and food pairings, as well as Okanagan College and UBC Okanagan.

Another significant component of their mandate will be educating those who have yet to realize the bounty around them.

“The actual supply of local food as a component of what people consume is infinitesimal and if we don’t take steps to get the community engaged in understanding the role of producers, we could be in trouble,” Pigott said, adding that only two cents on every grocery dollar spent in the Okanagan goes to local producers.

Considering US growers are struggling with keeping up the levels of food they produce as their climate realities change, a new stream of awareness could be increasingly important.

“It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to see, they’re headed for a huge crisis, so if we stimulate more support and more education, people will have an enhanced appreciation of how important and critical local farming is to our overall sustainability.”

Pigott couldn’t say how many of the current farmers’ market vendors would be leaving the long-standing organization, but indicated there are a fair number. That said, he doesn’t believe the new co-op will harm the current market.

“If we can stimulate more community engagement, the capacity to want two farmers’ markets will exist. This isn’t about competition, it’s about getting more people engaged.”

The successful applicant will be responsible for volunteer recruitment, interviewing, orientation, training and recognition as well as record keeping. While volunteer recruitment is an important aspect of this role, increasing the engagement of current volunteers is essential.

The association is looking for a commitment of two to three hours per week and is very flexible on the day in which you come in.

Second lake crossing could be built by 2022, says minister Wade Paterson STAFF REPORTER

Motorists may have a second way to get over Okanagan Lake in less than a decade.

Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure Todd Stone said the second crossing project is currently in its second phase of planning.

“A project of this size typically takes about a decade from beginning to end,” said Stone.

“We’re a year or two into that. So, theoretically, we could see a second crossing in another eight years or so.”

Phase two is currently focusing on what a new crossing would look like, where it will be lo-

cated and what extent of additional road work will be required on either side of the lake, according to Stone.

“There’s a lot of talk about to what extent do we do road work on either side of a second crossing.

“Is it just a bridge? Or is it a bypass around West Kelowna that bypasses Peachland as well?”

The SunRype block is a fixture around these parts and, if the company’s leadership has its say, this is how it will remain as it wages a solid battle to remain a force in the global food trade.

“If you really want to wind me up, ask me if we’re moving to the U.S.,” says Dave McAnerney, president and CEO, SunRype Products Ltd. “That one comes up every once in a while and I have no idea why. It makes no business sense.”

Known for its tightlipped communications, SunRype was out to dispel those rumours Thursday, showcasing the $7-million Elopack production line reportedly blowing the doors off sales in Eastern Canada and pushing the company’s brand south of the border.

While its blue-label juice boasts a 65 per cent market share in Western Canada, brand recog-

Deceased driver named

A driver killed in a collision with a semi-trailer on Highway 97 near Peachland has been identified by the B.C. Coroners Service.

Barbara Lynn Garrett, 69, was the sole occupant of a car that collided with a semi 300 metres south of Trepanier Bench Road in Peachland shortly after noon June 26.

She died at the scene of the collision.

The B.C. Coroners Service and RCMP Traffic Services continue to investigate the death.

West Kelowna farmers and agritourism operators are hoping the district’s new farm loop will enjoy similar success to that of the Westside Wine Trail.

The Westside Farm Loop celebrated its official launch Thursday at Paynter’s Fruit Market in West Kelowna.

“I remember loading cherries into the van… driving all up and down the Valley, (and) taking fruit to Alberta to try to find markets for our fruit,” said Jeremy Griffin, a fourth-generation farmer at Griffin Farms in West Kelowna. d “If we can sell fruit sfrom home, the Westside tFarm Loop is definitely mgoing to help us do that.”

West Kelowna Mayor Doug Findlater said it’s important for the district to work with the farm community.

“Agriculture has a rich history here in West Kelowna,” said Findlater.

“We hear time and time again from our residents and visitors that they remember the Westside back as kids, pick-

ing and eating fresh fruit (and) veggies right out of the garden.”

John Perrott, business development officer with the District of West Kelowna, said the district took the idea of a farm loop to the Agrticultural Advisory Committee last year.

“We sat in front of them and said, ‘We have this idea, we’re not sure if it’s going to work, but can you give us a hand?’ We pulled out a big city map, and they started drawing on it where all the farms were,” said Perrott.

Speed limits on roads should be ‘seasonal’

To the editor: I just heard about the new increase to a certain amount of provincial highways in B.C., and as much as I support the idea I believe that they should have a sign that reads: ‘Seasonal Maximum’ and have the lim-

h+) when the roads are bone dry, with no other vehicles or rigs in sight, and being capable of stopping a lot quicker than how it would be with doing 140 at Thanksgiving; I agree with how that could/should be ruled as a seasonal speed limit, the

same way that they have the flashing ambers warning you to put your chains on and make sure you have decent tires for when there are massive winter conditions ahead.

So, if you can legally do 70 km/h (by using your road sense) in the

winter time with or without chains, why not legally use your road sense and do 140 km/h while driving in the summer time with no need to ‘constantly’ think more than twice about what’s ahead.

Canada Day has turned into jingoistic affair

To the editor: With yet another flag-waving Canada Day behind us, celebrating Canada’s 147th birthday replete with a veritable love-in of self-congratulatory fervour, one cannot escape the uncomfortable notion that it is a slippery slope from patriotism to jingoism.

Approaching Canada’s 150th birthday three years from now, in 2017, let’s resolve to re-name “Canada Day” to “Confederation Day” to keep reminding ourselves of the country’s historical roots.

Ask about Canada’s history. Canada’s contrived official policy of legislated multiculturalism has, in reality, become a politically and socially engineered substitute national identity and a sad manifestation of the growing ignorance, particularly among young Canadians,

that has developed with respect to our awareness of Canada’s traditional national and historical heritage.

Thus, many things have been named and re-named “Canada,” be it Canada Day or Canada Place or Canada Line, lest we might forget who we are, where we are and what we are.

Other countries do not engage in the jingoism of referring to their national days as “America Day” or “France Day” or “Germany Day” or “Holland Day.” They are secure about who and what and where they are.

National days celebrate self-made historical achievement. The French people gave birth to their nation on July 14, 1789, and celebrate it as Bastille Day. Americans gave birth to their nation on July 4, 1776, and celebrate it as Independence Day.

Unlike the revolutionary beginnings of France and America, Canada began its devolutionary journey to self-government on July 1, 1867 as the federal Dominion of Canada with the confederation of the three colonies of British North America into the Canadian provinces of Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. So let’s mark Canada’s birthday as Confederation Day. Now 147 years later, Confederation—the “coming together” of all of Canada—continues to be a challenge requiring renewed effort and commitment from all of us all year round.

Like B.C., Saskatchewan teachers not ready to settle

To the editor: The government of Saskatchewan is presently involved with contract negotiations with school teachers. The last teacher contract there ended on August 31, 2013, and negotiations are still going on.

A 6.5 per cent wage increase over four years, offered in October 2013, was rejected by the

Saskatchewan teachers even after the Saskatchewan Teachers’ Federation told the teachers to vote yes for the contract.

A second offer with a wage increase of 7.3 per cent wage increase over four years was also rejected in June 2014, even after the Saskatchewan Teachers’ Federation told the teachers to vote yes for the contract.

Saskatchewan education minister Don Morgan, said that class size and curriculum cannot be included in the contract.

What is ironic here, is that the Saskatchewan Teachers’ Federation negotiated new contracts twice with the Saskatchewan government, advising the teachers to accept the offers, but still the teachers would not listen

to their union.

In summary, it all boils down to the fact that the majority of school teachers are greedy, and that Saskatchewan school teachers are more greedy than their counterpart teachers in B.C. What is amazing, is even without a wage increase, most teachers are paid excellent wages and benefits and cannot seem

to realize that they only have to work 188 days per year where the rest of us must work 238 days per year.

Unbelievable, as they all have a university education. Makes one wonder at times.

To the editor: Open letter to Amanda Poon regarding her letter to the editor: Shameful Treatment Of Migrant Workers (June 16 Capital News).

I disagree with about 99.99 per cent of your

The workers have their transportation and travel costs, a lot of their food and all medical expenses paid by the Can-

ublic perception of mental illness often includes an assumption that individuals with psychiatric disorders are likely to be violent and dangerous.

In particular, when many people hear about schizophrenia or bipolar disorder, they believe violence is a probable symptom associated with these serious mental illnesses.

Unfortunately, this assumption is the result of misinformation and excessive media coverage of violent crimes. In reality, very few people with mental illness—even untreated illness—will ever be violent.

A recent study in the Annals of Epidemiology looks at mental illness, gun violence and

Paul Latimer suicide and discusses evidence-based policy changes that may lead to a reduction in both gun violence and suicide.

The majority of people believe violence is largely the result of untreated mental illness.

However, as noted by this study’s author, even if schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and depression were all cured, the rate of violence in the US would only diminish by approximately four per cent.

When we factor suicide into the statistics for gun violence, mental illness is of course responsible for a much larger portion of the blame. In the US, 61 per cent of all gun fatalities are the result of suicide and the vast majority of suicide is the result of mental illness.

Substance abuse is a strong risk factor for both violence and suicide and access to a gun is also considered an independent risk factor for suicide.

Our policies dealing with mental illness and violence, both here in Canada and elsewhere, should focus on evidence rather than fear. We must deal with preventing the social and behavioural causes of violence. This means addressing sub-

stance abuse, reducing access to weapons such as firearms and working on suicide prevention.

We also need to work to change public perception of mental illness.

Not only do stigma and misinformation lead to people being fearful of those with psychiatric conditions, but they also lead to individuals being hesitant to seek help when it is needed.

Mental illness is a serious problem and we need to work harder to provide access to mental health services for all affected.

Our goal should be to provide compassionate, effective and timely care and to restore daily functioning as much as possible. In order to do this, all levels of government need to be proactive and cooperative in creating an environment conducive to care and support rather than one of protectionism and fear.

Verdict This new Cherokee is off to a fantastic start. Sales are strong and the sharp design is bringing in buyers, not shoving them away. The 2014 Cherokee could not be further away from the last model; this is a thoroughly modern SUV with go-anywhere capability and aroundtown refinement that needs to be experienced.

Chrysler 200.

The Chrysler 200 was introduced for 2011 replacing outgoing Sebring. It’s available as a mid-sized sedan, with coupe-like styling and a roomy interior, as a hard or soft top convertible with two doors and four seats.

The 200 is on the same chassis as the Sebring but came with revised suspension, stiffer body mounts, a raised roll centre, new sway bars and a wider rear track to improve its ride and handling. There were also extensive upgrades to reduce cabin noise.

The 2011 200 came in base LX, Touring, Limited and top-line S trim levels. The base engine is a 173-horsepower, 2.4-litre, 16-valve four-cylinder. Even the LX edition of the 200 comes with a very good equipment package that includes a tilt and telescoping steering wheel, four-wheel disc brakes with an anti-lock system, remote keyless entry with a security alarm, power windows, locks and mirrors (heated) and air conditioning.

The optional and newer 3.6-litre (Pentastar) V6 was a powertrain offering that came with a six-speed automatic. A quieter and smoother performer than the four-cylinder, this V6 can effortlessly produce 283 horsepower.

Weather proves challenging as Kelowna hosts North Am. sailing event The 2014 Hobie 18 Women’s and Hobie 16 Trapseat North American Championships were held at the Central Okanagan Sailing Association (COSA) over the past weekend, and as expected, COSA sailors made the podium in both fleets.

The Hobie 18 event was won by Chris Bradshaw and Serentity Taha of Kansas, who earned several first place finishes over the three day event. Gillian Thomson and Ruth Branscombe of COSA were a close second and remained the best finishers in the class for Canada. The battle for third place was intense, with a tie going into the third day between Kelly Havig and Valerie Pioszak of Oregon, and Bryana Van Leuuwen of Ontario and her sailing partner Heather Halperin of Kelowna.

Falcons host Wenatchee this weekend The Kelowna Falcons are back in Kelowna to open up an important series at Elks Stadium against the Wenatchee Applesox this weekend.

The Falcons limped back to Kelowna after winning just two of its last 10 games, including a tough road trip that ended on Wednesday night

in Bend with the Falcons dropping a game that they appeared to have in hand.

The Falcons held a 2-1 lead with six outs to go but lost 6-2 on Wednesday night in Bend.

“We are excited to host the Young Stars Classic, now in its fourth year, in beautiful Penticton,” said Trevor Linden, president of Canucks Sports and Entertainment, in a statement.

“This is an excellent tournament to develop and assess our prospects in competitive game situations. We have amazing fans in the Okanagan and look forward to sharing an NHL experience with them while celebrating the rich hockey history of Penticton.”

Tournament ticket packages include six games for $60. This allevent package offers best value to fans with savings of 30 per cent until Aug.15. A new offering this year are two VIP ticket packages for $85 and $180, respectively, plus applicable fees.

Jakubeit noted that deal is aggressively priced to get packages out the door.

Jakubeit also said the Young Stars Classic will continue a hockey festival theme, making it a “must attend” event while also providing significant economic impact and exposure for the community and facilities.

This year’s festivities include a Canucks Town Hall Breakfast, Minor Hockey Day, which will include a Party on the Plaza event with games, food, music and entertainment and a skills and development camps for minor hockey players.

While not part of the Classic, a ticket to the Penticton Vees’ exhibition game will be included in tournament packages. Jakubeit said it’s an opportunity to showcase those players and a way to involve the Vees, who in previous years have been in Chilliwack at the same time for the Bauer BCHL Showcase.

“We want to be partners to them, they give up their dressing room for the Canucks to use,” said Jakubeit. “It’s sort of a give back.”

All Stars split games with New Zealanders Kings Stadium was full on Wednesday night as a team of Kelowna All Stars hosted the New Zealand junior men’s national team for a fastball double-header that opened up with some traditional singing and dancing.

After the Okanagan Indian Band Drummers welcomed the visiting New Zealand squad with a traditional welcoming chant and song and presented the Kiwis with some gifts, it was the New Zealanders who took over the spotlight and performed the traditional Haka (war) Dance to a warm reception from the packed crowd at Kings Stadium.

The games were a tune-up for New Zealand, which will play in the junior world championships this year and the two teams played a pair of en-

tertaining games with the visitors showing a scrappy style and the veteran Kelowna side featuring solid defense and pitching.

Kelowna jumped out to a lead in the first game of the double header, leading 2-0 after the first inning and adding three more in the third to lead 6-1.

The seventh inning showed why New Zealand should be a team to reckon with at the worlds as they pushed hard, scoring twice before Kelowna closed the door on a 6-3 win.

The UFC Experience Tour will include a one-day UFC Community Works event that will give back to the community in support of the Westcoast Boys Club Network Foundation while the second day will educate, energize and engage fans on the sport of mixed martial arts and the UFC. “The UFC experience that is coming through Kelowna this weekend is a great chance for fans to get up and close to some of the great athletes in the UFC,” said Toshido MMA owner David Lea. “It will be an opportunity to see what Toshido MMA has been doing in Kelowna for the past 16 years.”

For several years, the Westcoast Boys Club Network (BCN) has been invited to explore community outreach and expansion to the Okanagan

and Kootenays but was unable to answer that call due to limited resources.

But thanks to a donation by the UFC through the Canucks for Kids Fund, BCN will be visiting Kelowna this weekend to preview their reality stage play Man Up! to a private audience of area educators, youth workers and members of local MMA gyms.

Man Up! has become the BCN’s calling card, has been seen by over 10,000 high school students, educators, parents, youth workers and other stakeholders since it premiered to critical acclaim in 2012.

Man Up!, which premieres in Kelowna late October, 2014, chronicles the true story of the original boys club.

A gritty, heart-wrenching, emotional and lifechanging story of two determined eastside educators, a group of at risk

boys on the sharp knife edge of life, a handful of generous and visionary Vancouver businessmen from all walks of life, and the compelling four year journey they took together - from the edge of frustration, hopelessness and despair to the pinnacle of hopefulness and success.

The play tells deeply personal stories of individual struggle, overcoming demons, and realizing dreams.

Man Up! is professionally produced and features working stage and television actors, three of whom are former BCN members. The 45-minute preview event will comprise a series of dramatic monologues taken from the full-length play, plus a short Q&A session following.

On Saturday the public will get a chance to meet a few UFC athletes, including Kelowna’s Matt Dwyer who has signed a UFC contract, at a couple of public events.

The UFC Experience, a free event for the public, will take place from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m. at City Park on Saturday with Dwyer as well as fellow UFC members Sarah Kaufman, the fifth ranked

UFC women’s bantamweight fighter as well as Elias Theodorou, a UFC middleweight.

Back on the Canucks bandwagon

I

t is with mixed feelings (including heaps of apprehension) that I publicly admit to cautiously jumping back on the Canucks fan bus.

New Vancouver GM Jim Benning has given me significant reason for hope that Vancouver might relatively soon become Stanley Cup contenders again and eventually champions.

Unfortunately that task is now a few years away—compared to being a very tangible goal less than two years ago.

I am pleasantly surprised at being able to jump back on the band bus so quickly.

I did not believe Canucks’ owners genuinely wanted to shake things up enough to get rid of both the club’s major problems—coach John Tortorella and useless GM Mike Gillis.

When Trevor Linden was named Canuck boss man I was not sure what that would really mean regarding the club moving back into respectability.

The question in the back of many minds was whether Linden would just become a puppet to the owners.

Charlie Hodge other 44 years of mediocrity.

However, Linden brought in Jim Benning and the new GM has had a significant impact.

After a very quiet start Benning caught fire in the past two weeks.

His most significant move thus far is the snagging of free agent goaltender Ryan Miller.

While some suggest it is a big gamble, I believe it was a brilliant move to fill a huge hole.

Regardless of any suggestions otherwise, Miller has plenty of solid years left in him—allowing for a young goalie or two to emerge from the suddenly impressive stable of young puck blockers.

In another free agent scoop Benning snagged veteran winger Radim Vrbata away from Phoenix.

Vrbata has scored 20 goals or more five times and is a likely pencil in for

the right wing spot with the Sedin twins.

Those moves only compliment Benning’s stint at the junior draft last week where he picked up several future potential players including strong, skilled left wing sniper Jake Virtanen with the sixth overall pick.

Virtanen, already 6’1 and 208 pounds, has the potential to be a first or second line regular in the years ahead.

Benning’s savvy at both the draft table and in the free agency game during his short tenure is a fresh breath of hope compared to Mike Gillis.

He has already done better in one month than Gillis did in years.

I will never forget how, when so many others around me failed to answer my call for help, Craig was there. He was a relative stranger with nothing to gain and only himself to offer who answered the call.

I will never forget the lesson that taught me, and I will never forget Craig.

Mediation bid fails in teacher talks

A B.C. Supreme Court justice has concluded the B.C. Teachers’ Federation and the B.C. government are too far apart on wages and working conditions for mediation to be effective.

The B.C. Public School Employers’ Association and the BCTF confirmed Wednesday that Justice Stephen Kelleher has taken part in “exploratory” talks in recent days to seek an end to the teacher strike that wiped out the last two weeks of the school year.

“He had some exploratory discussions with the parties and determined that mediation is not indicated at this time,” said an agreed statement by both

parties.

Education Minister Peter Fassbender said the BCTF’s total compensation demands are still more than twice what other government unions have settled for.

The union’s benefit demands alone represent an additional $225 million a year, he said. Those include increases to preparation time, pregnancy and parental leave, extended health and dental and substitute teacher compensation.

BCTF president Jim Iker said the government placed unacceptable pre-conditions on wage negotiations going to mediation.

ith another Okanagan summer upon us, politics and government are probably the last things on people’s minds.

But the work of government goes on, even if sometimes I wish I was on the water instead.

Just like any growing community, transportation is a key issue on the Westside—and residents can look forward to a major enhancement of transit service with the arrival of RapidBus at the end of August. With an investment of $23.9 million from the provincial government these fast, comfortable buses will serve two new transit exchanges at Westbank Centre and Boucherie Mountain, and two new stations along Highway 97.

Whether it’s for work, play, or school, commuting across the water will soon be a lot easier.

Speaking of Westbank Centre, work continues to make the downtown core even more inviting for residents, visitors and investment. Recent improvements on Brown Road, delivered in part

by B.C.’s Gas Tax Fund, will help make downtown West Kelowna a destination for shoppers and tourists, and an asset to the local economy. This is also a great example of how the municipal, B.C.

Christy Clark and federal governments can partner to meet the community’s needs.

Speaking of meeting needs, for years the Westbank Lions Club served as a community hub for countless events, fundraisers, and meetings.

When it burned down, it left a real hole in the community—one it couldn’t afford to properly fill right away.

That’s why I’m very pleased the provincial government is contributing $34,000 toward the fundraising effort for a new Lions Hall. Because we made the tough decisions necessary to balance the budget for the second consecutive year, we are now in a position to make strategic investments in projects that affect people’s everyday lives.

I am confident that Westside residents and others will now step up to push the Lions Club across the finish line.

place lost cornerstones— and others aim to build new ones. Okanagan College is already playing a vital role in our new Skills for Jobs Blueprint, by training young people for high-demand jobs. But in a growing region of a growing province, demand for post-secondary education and skills training close to home is only going to go up.

That’s why we recently invested $28-million in new trades training facilities at the Kelowna campus, on track for completion in 2016—the latest of many capital investments at both Okanagan College and UBCO. We’re also focused on ensuring you have access to some of the best health care in the world— investing $367-million in the Kelowna-based Interior Heart and Surgical Centre and $254-million to expand Kelowna General Hospital.

Kelowna and the Central Okanagan will keep growing for two reasons.

First, it’s a region that believes in and embraces free enterprise. And second—well, just look around you. We’re blessed to call such a beautiful place home—especially in the summer.

Soup Sisters help shelter Some Kelowna residents with warm hearts have expanded their effort to warm the bellies of some of this city’s vulnerable residents.

Kelowna’s Soup Sisters—a local non-profit enterprise dedicated since 2011 to providing comfort to the community’s vulnerable through the making, sharing and donating of soup—extended their ladle to the Youth Overnight shelter this week.

After meeting with shelter organizer Jennifer Paquette, Soup Sisters co-ordinator Jennifer Schell wanted to do what she could to offset recent funding cuts.

of its kind in the entire Okanagan, and cuts to its funding can be devastating to those who rely on its programming.

“One only needs to go downtown in the evening to see the number of street kids wandering around,” said Schell. “It is really horrible.”

This new partnership will mean that soup made by the community will be simmering on the shelter’s stove when its clients check in at 6 p.m.

There will also be extra soup to share with their drop-in centre downtown.

Clients of the shelter may also get some new skills from the partnership.

“We are looking for-

ward to inviting the kids to the soup making sessions—a chance to be in a room filled with loving people and to maybe even pick up some cooking tips,” said Schell.

New Soup Sisters kitchen partner, Betty Cherkoui will be hosting the monthly soup-making events at her business, Saj Common Kitchen, which can facilitate groups of 20 to make the 60 litres of soup each month. That’s the same quantity that the current Soup Sisters group makes for the Kelowna Women’s Shelter.

Passed away on June 27 at Village at Smith Creek in West Kelowna, B.C. at the age of 103. He is survived by his wife, Florence, three daughters, Bettyanne Hoogie (Edward) of Red Deer, Alterta, Antoinette Rushford (Robert) of Lethbridge, Alberta and Joanne Takacs (Frank) Raymond, Allberta, 9 grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren and 3 great great grandchildren. He is predeceased by his first wife, Justine, 9 sisters and brothers.

He was a farmer near Grassy Lake, Alberta, curler, musician and visual artist. He had his own orchestra for years.

As a devout Catholic, he was a member of the Knights of Columbus, and active in Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in West Kelowna.

He had a wonderful personality and a great sense of humour. He had a positive attitude and enjoyed life.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Our Lady of Lourdes Elementary School in West Kelowna, Hospice, or to a charity of your choice in his name.

A huge thank you to the wonderfully attentive staff at Village at Smith Creek and all those who visited and attended him.

The funeral will be held at Our Lady of Lourdes Church in West Kelowna at 11:00 a.m., Friday, July 4, 2014.

“If you want to sleep through to breakfast, fasten your seat belt over your blanket now,” said Liana, the flight attendant, refilling my water bottle.

“If we experience turbulence over Greenland, you have to b...,” she said, her voice fading away. But I was already half-asleep.

The next thing I remember was climbing into a taxi and telling the driver to go to Knightsbridge.

Somewhere along the way, I fell down Alice’s rabbit hole and landed in Victorian London, waking up in a 126-year-old, red-brick row house at 11 Cadogan Gardens, in Chelsea.

But my fourth floor digs weren’t the draughty garret you’d expect a writer to occupy. Real starving artists, writers of socialist tracts or poetry for the ages, may have found inspiration in cold rooms and bowls of gruel. And that’s not me. Nor was it

London: Two hotels, two city views the style at either of the two hotels I stayed at last April, the Rosewood Hotel, on High Holborn, and 11 Cadogan Gardens, near Sloane Square.

In some towns and for some travellers, a hotel is just a bed. But not in this ancient capital, a city of a dozen distinct neighbourhoods. The hotel where you eat breakfast, catch up

on emails, write postcards and linger over an after-dinner brandy will reflect its history. And some will stick to you, too.

At 11 Cadogan Gardens, a 54-room boutique hotel, Victorian sensibilities reign. Built in 1888, the heyday of the British Empire, the hotel had been updated now and again. But it remains so

determinedly low-profile that except for the occasional reporter’s leak, the guest list depends on word of mouth. The red-haired charmer in the adjacent suite could be an Oscar winner or a rich widow.

The man with the moustache: a Disney animator or a corporate tycoon.

“We’re quite popular with novelists,” said John,

in reception. “But they’re just a private guest when they’re here with us.”

My two-room retreat literally breathed Empire at its best. The high ceilings, the decorative mouldings and the wobbly doors were original, as were the sash windows, easy to open when you needed a breath of air. The bathroom was definitely

old-school with a tub big enough for two. Area rugs hid some of the floor’s creaky, black-painted boards, nicked here and there, as bare floors always are.

But newer than tomorrow were the creature comforts: patterned wing chairs, a plump canopy bed with a new mattress, satin quilts, cot-

ton sheets and feather pillows. The colour scheme, a contemporary decorator’s choice, ran from soft grey and pale brown to silver and black, with billowy drapes, mirrored closet doors and a sofa and chairs to match. What would Queen Victoria think, I wondered, inspecting the bright lights, the television, the safe and the internet access.

Beyond the window, green tree branches filtered the sunlight speckling the gated and fenced garden below— a private space for residents only. A resident myself, for the duration, I sat on a bench under a cherry tree, sketched the scene and watched a couple of laughing children toss a ball.

With dusty portraits climbing the stairwell and a library full of leather-bound tomes, there was much to see. At 8 p.m. I dined in the hotel’s cellar restaurant, where the See London A30

Queen Victoria shadowed me as I visited her former haunts: Kensington Palace where she was raised; and Buckingham Palace, where she watched the Changing of the Guards from the window. I watched it from outside the fence.

She came to mind as I explored the Victoria and Albert Museum’s eclectic collections. From glassware to ceramics and fabrics to tile; from Greek and Roman statuary to Renaissance “cartoons,” the V&A had it all.

Why was the bust made from Henry VII’s death mask on display?

A tribute to Tudor history, perhaps. How surprising it was that he looked nothing like the portraits of his famous son, Henry VIII. The next day, I moved to the Rosewood Hotel, in a seven-story, Grade II-listed, “Belle Epoque” building on High Holborn, and found myself in a different, older London.

The neighbourhood, “The City,” predates the Victorian West End and is closer to Westminster Abbey, Covent Garden and the

theatre district, and to the Inns of Court.

The building itself is newer, built in 1914 for an insurance company. But after a $144 million restoration and renovation, the magnificent Edwardian-Palladian facade and 116-foot cupola are a perfect fit for the Rosewood Hotel group’s brand of luxury.

As taken as I was with the gated entrance and inner courtyard, I was even more impressed with the contemporary design inside the hotel, especially on the ground floor, where glass and brass combine for a burst of luminosity.

Transparent and translucent panels replace solid walls and are used for partitions and passageways.

Glass enhances indirect light, glitters from chandeliers and warms backlit display shelves for objets d’arts.

“This used to be the insurance company’s East Banking Hall,” he told me, after describing the “charcuterie board” and the “Cornish slip soles.”

“Huge, isn’t it?” he went on, waving a hand at the scattering of oak tables

and chairs, and at the rows of red, leather-upholstered booths near the bar.

Poking around on west side of the building, I found the Lobby Lounge, a clubby kind of room with walls of bookcases, sofas and wing chairs, an extensive, mirror-backed bar and a banquet size fireplace.

The decor in my second-floor studio suite— one of 262 guest rooms and 44 suites— was a lesson in min-

imalism done right. The colors were neutral but warm; the chairs simple but sleek; the tables plain but well-built, and the enormous bathroom, functional but lavish, all mirrors and marble. Small stacks of coffee table books, photo collections and atlases sat on several tables, an instant invitation to any reader.
