Court date slated in assault charge AUTUMN MacDONALD Observer Reporter The man charged with assaulting a police officer is awaiting his next court appearance.

Ryan Kozuchar, 23, is in provincial court July 15 to consult with counsel.

The alleged incident occurred shortly after 8 p.m. June 21 on the Barkerville Highway when police conducted a traffic stop of a suspected impaired driver. The officer made the legal demand for the driver to provide a sample of his breath as part of the impaired driving investigation.

The driver refused to provide the required breath sample and was advised that he was under arrest for refusing to provide a breath sample. At this point, it is alleged that the 67-year-old driver and his 23-year-old male passenger (Kozuchar) became combative and began striking the officer multiple times to the head. The police officer radioed for emergency backup. A second officer arrived on scene and came to his aid at which point the suspects fled into a residence.

Additional police personnel arrived quickly on scene and began tending to the injured officer while awaiting the arrival of BC Ambulance Services.

The injured officer was transported to Quesnel’s G.R. Baker Hospital where he was treated for non-life threatening injuries including head injuries and a dislocated shoulder. He is expected to make a full recovery.

A perimeter was established around the residence and for the next four hours, police attempted to make contact with and negotiate the two suspects out of the residence.

Police entered the residence shortly before 2 a.m. and arrested the two males with the assistance of the police dog. The 23-year-old male suspect sustained a minor laceration to his leg after he was bit by the police dog during the arrest. He was transported to G.R. Baker Hospital by police where he received three stitches to his wound.

The flip flop of science

Whichever is more convenient.

At least that is how it seems Prime Minister Stephen Harper deals with science, scientists and their advice.

What other explanation can there be for Harper saying, in a CBC interview, in reference to parents who for various reasons do not allow their children to receive immunization shots, “it’s a tragedy when people start to go off on their own theories and not listen to scientific evidence.”

Let’s take a pause to let that bit of irony sink in.

Harper has consistently worked to eliminate or, at minimum, impede the development of scientific research, eliminate the objectivity of science from any debate by muzzling scientists, cutting budgets and just plain ignoring their findings and advice.

Facts can be problematic, a nuisance, a hinderance, especially when he has an agenda and the only thing between Harper and the realization of his agenda is science.

Unless of course the facts support his agenda.

Knowledge of our environment, and the deplorable condition it is in, is particularly troubling for Harper’s agenda.

So gone is most of the funding for Environment Canada, Fisheries and Oceans, as well as for the Polar Environment Atmospheric Research Laboratory, and the Experimental Lakes Area.

If we don’t know how mismanaged and mistreated the environment is, then we won’t have to lie awake worrying.

The art of a good handshake M

y grandfather used to say that handshakes were important and the way you delivered one said a lot about you.

If Papa were alive today, I wonder what he would have said about Fred.

After a few text exchanges, coordinating play dates between our kids, I met Fred in person.

I smiled, told him I was happy to finally meet him and extended my hand.

Instead of looking me in the eye or smiling in response he blurted out an agitated “Ya, hi,” grabbed my index finger, and awkwardly shook that a few times.

At first I wondered if he was joking. I’ve received some questionable handshakes over the years, but no one had ever singled out just one of my fingers to shake before. He wasn’t joking though.

He was either in a rush and accidentally zeroed in on the one digit, or he was in extreme need of a lesson on how to give a proper

So, on the off-chance he reads this column and the latter is the truth, here’s some advice for you Fred: learn to give a better handshake. It’s so easy a kid can do it.

My children were in preschool when I first taught them.

“Offer your hand with your fingers together and straight, and your thumb high,” I coached them.

“When the other person’s thumb is locked next to yours, grip their hand and shake once or twice.”

The first time my son tried it he squeezed my hand so tight I let out a yelp.

Impressive strength for a little kid, but it wasn’t how

subjected to - such as the “dead fish” – where the person’s hand lies limply in yours.

Or the “hanger-on” – who holds your hand too long.

Or, as my son had already tried on me, the “bone crusher” – who squeezes too tight.

“A bad handshake is memorable,” I explained.

“But for the wrong reasons. Make it a good one and you’ll make a good first impression.”

My grandfather was a captain in the Royal Canadian Navy during World War II and a businessman in the logging industry after that.

When he explained the importance of handshakes and how wars have ended and business deals have begun based on a great shake of the hand, I paid attention.

And now my kids are paying attention. Finger Freddy should too.

This physical greeting should show confidence and enthusiasm, but it shouldn’t overpower the other person.

It should also be accompanied by eye contact and a smile, when appropriate.

“What about this thing?” my daughter asked, referring to her left arm.

“Do I just leave it hanging here like a monkey?”

“Sure you can,” I replied.

“Or you can touch the other person on their arm or do a double handshake cupping the shaking hands from underneath.”

“Like this?” she asked, demonstrating the second option and looking like a mini politician.

“Whatever feels comfortable,” I replied.

“Just remember to look the other person in the eye and use their name if you know it. People like hearing their own name.”

Court ruling one-sided Editor: The recent ruling on the B.C. Tsilhqot’in Indian’s land claim will be entered in the history books as being one of the more radical rulings ever rendered by the Supreme Court of Canada.

Without any consideration for the rights and needs of the other 4.5 million British Columbians it arbitrarily ruled all B.C. Crown lands and resources belong to the Indians.

It has put a big dark cloud of uncertainty over the province of B.C., as well as the rest of Canada in terms

of citizenship, economic development and rights to title and resources for all Canadians, Indians included.

The failure of the B.C. government to consult is one issue, however, entitlement is quite another.

The Court failed to make that distinction and rendered a ruling that is unbelievably one-sided.

The ruling is also devastating for millions of multigeneration Canadians who were born and raised on Canadian soil, not to mention millions of immigrants who came to Canada and were told

‘we are all united as citizens and equal under the law’.

In other countries, when you become a citizen, you become a full partner with the same rights and responsibilities as all the other citizens.

That will never be the case in Canada for as long as we continue to be a British colony.

This ruling is just one more example of a dysfunctional judiciary that is appointed on a political whim, and accountable to absolutely no-one.

How Billy Barker Days came to be

ow did one of B.C.’s most enduring and popular family festivals, Billy Barker Days, get its start? Actually, more than a century and a half ago, before Canada was even a country, when prospector William (Billy) Barker from Cornwall, England struck it rich, perpetrating the great Cariboo Gold Rush and his namesake town of Barkerville, which boomed (and busted) more than a hundred years before our festival was even conceived.

It was 1958 that marked B.C.’s centenary and the government of the day bought out the private holdings in Barkerville and dedicated the old ghost town as a Provincial Park; a 100th birthday present to the people.

Such an unusual gift of a ghost town to the people spawned Barkerville’s second rush as British Columbians and indeed visitors from around the world once again thronged to the gold fields along Williams Creek.

Fast forward to 1973. Our town’s civic and business leaders watched as thousands of money-laden tourists passed by their shops, hotels and restaurants on their way to (and from)

Barkerville. Quesnel Town Council, led by Mayor Ceal Tingley and the Chamber of Commerce, with Bruce Cran at the helm, met to discuss ideas to capture some of those tourist dollars as they passed though the community. As a result, the Billy Barker Days Society emerged, with Jess Ketchum as its first president.

So, BB Days was really a product of the Chamber of Commerce, with pressure from the then town council.

My involvement in those early days – I was Jess’ right hand man. And it wasn’t only Jess and I, the Chamber manager then was Roberta Rines and really, if not for Roberta working so hard in the background, we wouldn’t have made it. There were about four others on the original organizing committee, Ken Riddell and Doug Heavenor are names that come to mind.

Town Council gave us a grant of $7,500 over three years as seed money. I think our first budget was $4,000. Today, it is more than $100,000.

I can recall one of the first orders of business was to research Quesnel’s historical summer weather data to find the best weather weekend for our festival.

I took my turn as president of the B.C. Festivals Association in about 1980. Billy Barker Days has endured to eventually outlive some of the “big” festivals we then envied.

Billy Barker Days attracted a steady stream of notable guests in those early years. PNE president Erwin Swangard and his entourage of PNE royalty regularly traveled to the Gold Pan City with the PNE parade float.

PGE Railway and later BC Rail presidents Mac Norris and Paul McEllicut often attended and treated Quesnel dignitaries to dinner aboard their fancy dining car. In those early years, BB Days Society “Yellow Jacket” volunteers looked enviously to the big town festivals like Kamloops Spoolmak Days

and Prince George Mardi Gras. One day we would be there!

Funny thing, now that those big festivals are long gone, it proves the timeless adage that size really doesn’t matter.

We were on the biker gangs’ radar for a year or two, and that is when we played up the “family” aspects of the festival, including a Sunday morning church service and a very visible police presence. Although, I can recall one time when police presence was a little too overwhelming. The beer garden was in the parking lot north of the Billy Barker Hotel and the cops decided to conduct a very thorough take down and search of a vehicle on McLean Street, right outside the wire fence containing the beer gardens. All hell was about to break loose, when a big

black cloud rolled in and about an inch of rain came down inside of about five minutes drowning the take down and the drunken explosion that was about to erupt.

Another incident that stands out for me is the Biffy Raft Races on the Fraser River, when one of the large Weldwood river boats struck a pier on the old Fraser River bridge.

We were so relieved when the heads of all six occupants eventually bobbed to the surface. The boat was recovered a year later.

A word about the old programs and the posters. Pretty well all of the art work was done by Jason Curtis, a local artist, hired away from Hook Signs in Calgary to come to work for Jack Hartnett, then owner of Spartan Printing.

The four R’s of volunteerism

from A9 It is interesting that Jason’s son Barry continues the Curtis legacy and has recently updated his dearly departed dad’s work (murals around town.) An interesting little note from the original program.

In spite of the complaining about the “new” parade route this year, it isn’t a whole lot different from that original parade route.

If there is one looming threat to BB Days, in fact, all events and festivals, it is in a

diminishing interest in volunteerism.

Community and business leaders, and that includes Rotarians, must do all we can to encourage and nurture our volunteers. We must recognize and remember the four R’s of volunteerism.

Recruit, Retain, Reward and Replace.

And that last one is often missed.

A volunteer has a responsibility to help ensure they are replaced before they retire. As long as there are events for the whole family at

little or no cost and volunteers willing to put it all together, with the support of City and the many sponsors, all under sunny skies, our little festival will continue to snag those Barkervillebound tourists, but more importantly, it’s a celebration for us here in our hometown of Quesnel and BB Days’ enduring success is testament to the enviable community spirit that makes Quesnel absolutely the best place to call home.

uring fall and winter the days got shorter and cooler, the nights got longer and colder. Sometimes life is like that – we go through seasons of change – for better or worse. In fact, we can say with confidence that change is a reliable constant.

Two things of which we need to be aware: God does not change. He is always the same.

Secondly, local church is God’s idea. Birthed in the Holy Spirit, grown in adversity and established on the Word, the local church remains His vehicle to reach a dying world.

Christianity is not a solo exercise and He puts us in the community to walk with others into our inheritance. And when the road becomes a little steep and bumpy, we help each other along, shoulder to shoulder. We read in 1 Corinthians 12 that “God has put the body together . . there should be no division in the body . . its parts should have equal concern for each other.”

To build this Church, God takes ordinary people like you and me, with different gifts, making their vital contributions, uniting them with a common vision and values to not only bring fullness of life to each, but the gift of Life to the lost.

SPCA tips for pets experiencing heat stroke

With temperatures rising across the province, the BC SPCA is reminding the public to protect their pets against the dangers of heat exhaustion and heatstroke.

The temperature in a parked car, even

in the shade with windows partly open, can rapidly reach a level that will seriously harm or even kill a pet.

In just minutes, the temperature in a parked car can climb to well over 38 degrees Celsius (100

degrees Fahrenheit).

Dogs have no sweat glands, so they cool themselves by panting and by releasing heat through their paws.

Dogs can withstand high temperatures for only a very short time – usually just 10 minutes - before

suffering irreparable brain damage or death. Pet guardians should be alert to heatstroke symptoms, which include: exaggerated panting (or the sudden stopping of panting), rapid or erratic pulse, salivation,

anxious or staring expression, weakness and muscle tremors, lack of coordination, convulsions or vomiting, and collapse. If your dog shows symptoms of heatstroke: • Immediately move the animal to a cool,

shady place • Wet the dog with cool water • Fan vigorously to promote evaporation.

This will cool the blood, which reduces the animal’s core temperature.

• Do not apply ice.

This constricts blood

flow, which will inhibit cooling.

• Allow the dog to drink some cool water (or to lick ice cream if no water is available) • Take the dog to a veterinarian as soon as possible for further treatment.

Softball season wraps up Well another season bites the dust, with players taking to the fields one last time as the Quesnel Girls Softball Association held the final wrap-up tournaments June 21 – 22. Okanagan campus hosts Quesnel gymnasts WHITNEY GRIFFITHS Observer Reporter The Quesnel Technics Gymnastic Club (QTGC) finished off the competitive season in Kelowna at the Ogopogo invitational May 30 – June 1.

This competition was attended by athletes all across B.C. as well as many gymnasts from Alberta.

For the QTGC this event

is the highlight of the season, not only for the quality of the competition but also the location with the event taking place in the main gymnasium of the UBC Okanagan Campus.

In Provincial Level 1 Novice first place on beam went to Sierra Moore, also winning second on floor, fourth on vault and sixth on bars to land in fourth place overall.

Fifth place overall for men's Provincial Level 3 went to gymnast Isaac Woollends, also taking home fourth on both floor and rings and fifth place on pommel horse, vault, parallel bars and horizontal bar.

In Provincial Level 3 Tyro Emily Gorder took home second place on beam, eighth place on floor , 10th on bars and 12th on vault landing this gymnast in eighth

place overall.

Jessica Higgins competed in Provincial Level 4 Tyro landing in eighth place overall, while also earning third place on vault, fifth on floor, sixth on beam and eighth on bars.

Competing in Provincial Level 2 Argo was Presley Kitamura taking home 10th place overall, in vault Kitamura landed in eighth place, ninth place on floor, 10th on bars and

13th on beam.

Eleventh place overall was Provincial Level 2 Novice competitor Celina DeRose, earning seventh place on beam, 10th on floor, 11th on vault and 12th on bars.

Gymnast Alyssa Schnieder's skill earned her 13th place overall in Provincial Level 3 Tyro, also taking home 10th on floor, 11th on Vault, 12th on beam and 13th on bars.

This event gave Quesnel gymnast a final opportunity to compete against opponents from across B.C. and Alberta, showcasing their hard work throughout the season.

Even though the season only recently ended many QTG athletes train all year round and are already working on routines for the upcoming season. Congratulations on a successful season.

The journey is underway

From Quesnel to Williams Lake

D

ay one, June 30, and 125km is behind us.

Literally behind us, we conquered the foray stage and made it to Williams Lake.

What a beautiful ride it was.

The entire staff of Cariboo Ford to friends that we consider family attended and sent Rob, Jaden Sull and I off with a thunderous ovation.

We began by having Jaden take us 2km on the highway to the turn-off where her bike was loaded. We began the climb up Dragon Lake hill and at the top we were met with positive cheers.

From there Rob and I cycled together and talked about how this entire fundraising was based on the idea of giving back and raising awareness of BC Children's Hospital.

After a few high fives and knuckle pounds we realized that we really are cycling, We really are doing this.

As Rob put it, “it's the best way to see the world.”

When we reached Kersley General store we had a good chuckle as this is where the conversation to cycle for a cause began a while ago.

Our first stop was Windt road pullout, a good time to stretch out our legs and time for pops to set up the BC Children’s banner on the car. Best of all he had packed cold water.

That was the centre point of our trip working together as a team and trusting our driver on stop suggestions.

It’s easy to burn out and stops are important.

Passing the old town of Alexandria I thought of the amazing history our region holds.

From singing birds to crickets chirping this journey is going to be growth in

Cycling 530 spirituality and a cleansing of the soul.

As we neared Mcleese lake the steeper gradual climbs began.

It's good preperation for Duffy Lake.

The highlight would've been meeting a group of motorcyclists from Chetwynd heading to Squamish for a motorcycle gathering.

We were able to exchange cycle to motorcycle stories.

We met up again at Xatsull and the convoy proudly gave us honks and waves.

Other than the big black dog on the side road where Rob and I switched to the opposite side of the highway. We began the final forever never ending the more than 5km climb into Williams lake, but the best part was the

descent to the lights before Williams lake.

We made it to GM and were welcomed by the staff who were overwhelmed and very generous.

They loaded us up with supplies from electrolyte drinks to energy bars, thank you GM.

Day two Began by leaving Williams Lake on a cool morning. We battles headwinds up to 108 Mile House.

Lac la Hache was beautiful where we examined our tanlines as the weather has been above 25.

After a quick lunch and leaving Lac La Hache we saw wildlife. A big badger that was making its way into the bushes.

So Archie and I were passing 108 Mile ranch and we could smell popcorn and fried onions so we think let’s check it out since we missed Quesnel’s Canada celebration.

We were there for about two minutes and people wanted to talk to us and here our story about what we’re doing

We then approach the Save On Foods tent and it didn’t take long before the paper photographer was there snapping photos of us.

They wanted us to participate in the Canada Day cake cutting where Archie and I were the guest of honour.

Then to top it all off they brought us up on stage, introduced us and had us tell the story of what we are doing.

And they donated on the spot.

Touching moment was when a grandmother was telling Archie and I about her grandson who was diagnosed with a genetic leukaemia, she broke

into tears when thanking us and shaking our hands.

Moments like that make all the pain we feel worth it.

Thanks 108 Mile such a class act.

It was a 9km walk or run for 9 months of pregnancy, pregnant or not. Men, women and children were invited to participate in the Belly Run around Ten Mile Lake Saturday June 21 at Kosta’s Cove, with each participant receiving a balloon to use as a ‘belly’ during the run. This fun run was organized by the Quesnel Maternity Department as a way to raise funds and help to buy new equipment.

With the help of community support the goal was reached, with the run bringing in just over $4,000.

The Trailhawk is a ‘real’ Jeep; this is thanks to a locking rear differential and a host of electronic aids. The most impressive feature is the low speed crawling mode for both up and down hill tasks. Therefore, Jeep purists, yes there is a Cherokee for you.

Verdict This new Cherokee is off to a fantastic start. Sales are strong and the sharp design is bringing in buyers, not shoving them away. The 2014 Cherokee could not be further away from the last model; this is a thoroughly modern SUV with go-anywhere capability and aroundtown refinement that needs to be experienced.

2013: Certain vehicles may experience fuel leakage or engine stall due to a broken control valve in the fuel tank assembly. Dealers will inspect and if the control valve is damaged, the fuel tank assembly and vapour canister will be replaced.
