Efforts underway to save Grind Carol Aun MISSION RECORD

The Fraser Valley Regional District (FVRD) is taking a popular hiking trail in Dewdney under its wing to try to protect it from potential logging operations.

The Dewdney Grind, accessed off Norrish Creek Forest Service Road east of Mission, is part of

a network of unofficial trails built on Crown land by local residents.

At the first summit, there is a memorial cabin dedicated to Ben von Hardenberg, a pilot who lost his life trying to put out a forest fire in 2003 when his helicopter crashed near Bonaparte Lake in B.C.’s interior. There is

an unobstructed view of the valley from the peak of the mountain, about another 45 minutes from the cabin.

Because it is not a designated trail, logging companies are not required to respect the path and its alignment, according to a report by Christina Vugteveen, manager of parks for FVRD.

“For it to be a designated recreation site, the province has to designate it,” Vugteveen explained. “They know it exists, but there are a lot of trails they want to do this with.”

The Dewdney trail and the cabin mean a lot to the von Hardenberg family, said Fred, Ben’s older brother.

“The trail was built for everybody,” explained Fred, who noted the man who initiated the construction of the trail two years after Ben’s accident likes to keep to himself, spending a lot of time in the woods.

Wulf is about 75 years old now, according to Fred. “There are

There are two trails leading to the cabin.

The south route is steep and challenging, while the northern trek is more family-friendly and crosses a natural spring water source.

It was also Wulf’s idea to build a cabin at the first peak in honour of Ben, who grew up in Dewdney.

Fred helped haul material up the mountain for the cabin.

Everything, including the stove and all the building components, were brought up by volunteers.

Inside the cabin, there are amenities for a tired traveller, such as tea, snacks, chairs and bedding.

There is also a photo of Ben, who was 33

A man convicted of murdering his girlfriend in Burnaby a dozen years ago has had his sentence reduced by China’s highest court.

Amanda Zhao, 20, was a Coquitlam College exchange student from China living in a North Burnaby basement suite with her boyfriend Ang Li when she was killed in October 2002.

Li, who has since changed his name to Jia-ming Li, fled to China two days after her body was found stuffed in a suitcase in the woods around Stave Lake near Mission.

It wasn’t until 2009 that he was arrested and September 2012 that a Chinese court found him guilty of murder and sentenced him to life in prison.

But Li appealed and last week the conviction was reduced to manslaughter and the sentence cut to seven years. As he’s been in prison since 2009, he would be freed in two years.

ruling made Zhao’s family feel the law was “fair and just,” the latest judgment by the Beijing High Peoples Court is “unacceptable,” said Bao-ying Yang, Zhao’s mother, in a statement Monday.

NDP MLA Jenny Kwan, who helped lobby on the family’s behalf, said the high court ruled there was insufficient evidence to support a first-degree murder conviction, citing the fact Zhao and Li were a couple and Li’s contention they were having a pillow fight that somehow led to her strangulation death.

It did, however, uphold the earlier ruling that Li owed Zhao’s family the equivalent of $194,875 in compensation for her death.

It’s not known whether he has the means to pay it, Kwan said.

Li, like Zhao, was an exchange student. He reported Zhao missing to police, claiming she didn’t return from a trip to the grocery store. Her body was found 11 days later.

“I don’t know how they know about it, but it’s astounding.”

The messages collected are kept in the family’s library. “It’s nice for the family to

read. Sentimentally, it means a lot to us. “(The logging threat) is very disheartening,” said Fred, who noted the north trail has already been cut through by a logging road.

He hikes the trail every week to maintain it and look after the cabin. When the area was targeted for logging a few years ago, he started a campaign to save the Grind. Since then,

other efforts have been made, including a Save the Dewdney Grind Facebook page, which has more than 1,500 members.

“Logging could destroy the trail forever,” said Artur Gryz, creator of the page.

Gryz went up the trail for the first time almost three years ago and now hikes it at least once a month.

He has never met the von Hardenberg family, but he is interested in saving the trail because it is “a gem to the Fraser Valley.

“The Dewdney Grind is one of the places that is a home away from home for a lot of people,” said Gryz.

“For me, it’s a way to get away from reality and focus on the outdoors, and focus on the beauty we’ve been given.”

Canada Day draws thousands of people to Fraser River Heritage Park Jason ROESSLE ABBOTSFORD NEWS

The smell of pancakes, sausages and sunscreen greeted the early visitors to Mission’s annual Canada Day celebrations at Fraser River Heritage Park.

The park filled up Tuesday morning, as a sea of red and Canadian flags wended its way through the crowd of families

that came down to take advantage of a day of free activities.

Kids’ events and activities got underway at 10 a.m., while the larger shows, such as the Matsqui Flyball and Agility, and Mission Loggers, each ran a few times throughout the course of the day.

There were a number of ongoing activities, including a giant climbing wall, martial arts demonstrations, the Mission

Fire/Rescue Service’s Junior Firefighter Challenge, crafts and pioneer games, and potato sack races.

The Canadian Tire Kid Zone was a popular place, and featured pony rides, a petting zoo, bouncy castle, face painting, hay rides and more.

A 20-minute fireworks display capped off the annual community celebration.

Mission folk fest gala concert kicks off event A gala concert at the Clarke Theatre on July 24 will start off this year’s Mission Folk Music Festival.

Scheduled to perform at the event are The Sweet Lowdown, Vou, True Blues with Guy Davis and Corey Harris, and Lemon Bucket Orkestra.

The Sweet Lowdown is part of the festival’s North of 49 performers.

The band has a passion for old-time music and

sweet harmonies.

Fiji’s Vou is part of the Sounds of the World showcase. The eight-member band is led by Gina Janus-Spedding, a choreographer from B.C. Their vibrant music and high-energy dance will keep audiences entertained.

Guy Davis and Corey Harris are part of the True Blues line up. Davis is a musician, composer, actor, director, and writer. His diverse music

can be playful or soulful.

Harris is a powerful singer and accomplished guitarist, and has toured with other well-known musicians, such as BB King, Taj Mahal and Tracy Chapman.

The Lemon Bucket Orkestra is a 16-member Canadian band featured in the Balkan Roots category.

The Mission Folk Music Festival takes place July 25-27 at Fraser

Raising speed threshold carries responsibilities, risks It just got quicker to get around parts of British Columbia.

On Wednesday the provincial government announced new, higher speed limits on 35 sections of rural highways, with more promised for later in the summer.

In total, drivers will be able to put their gas foot down a little harder on 1,300 kms of blacktop.

The Ministry of Transport says serious crashes on provincial highways have decreased 28 per cent since 2003. Cars are safer, drivers have more technology and education at their disposal.

Enforcement is better.

While lead-footed drivers and owners of sports cars may celebrate the decision, not everyone is happy.

The RCMP who patrol many of those highways and attend to the carnage that sometimes results from excessive speeding don’t like the new limits.

ICBC is worried about safety and vows

to monitor those stretches of highway with the new limits to see if there’s an effect on crash rates and severity.

Truckers aren’t pleased with the new limits either.

The B.C. Trucking Association says it will direct their drivers to stick to their current speed policies because the faster a fully loaded truck travels, the longer it takes to stop.

Also, the faster a truck moves, the more fuel it consumes. That money comes out of the pockets of truckers and, ultimately, consumers.

To alleviate safety concerns, the province has said it will adjust speed limits to weather conditions on some of those stretches of highway.

Too many drivers already treat speed limits as a suggestion, rather than law. Now their threshold has just been raised.

Examining life after the Tsilhqot’in decision Tom Fletcher

B.C. Views VICTORIA – The Supreme Court of Canada’s landmark decision on aboriginal title held by the Tsilhqot’in Nation leaves many questions to be answered.

Perhaps the biggest is this: Will British Columbia exist as we know it today by the end of this century? Or will it devolve into dozens of semi-autonomous regions, through treaties or similar court actions, as the only Canadian province that never completed historic treaties?

The Tsilhqot’in decision appears to uphold the key finding of the 2007 trial, that 1,700 square kilometres of the Nemiah Valley west of Williams Lake are essentially owned by the people who occupied it hundreds if not thousands of years ago.

It’s not quite ownership. Federal and provincial jurisdiction still applies, and their authority varies with the strength of the aboriginal title claim.

Chief Justice Beverley McLachlin ruled that the province overstepped its authority by issuing logging permits in the valley in 1983. McLachlin noted that lawyers for B.C. first argued that the logging was to control mountain pine beetle, then dropped that argument in its first appeal. She also upheld the decision of the trial judge, one-time NDP leadership contender David Vickers, who rejected B.C.’s position that the economic value of the timber to the province overrode the then-vaguely defined aboriginal title.

Here’s McLachlin’s definition: “The nature of aboriginal title is that it confers on the group that holds it the exclusive right to decide how land is used and the right to benefit from those uses, subject to the restriction that the uses must be consistent with the group nature of the interest and the enjoyment of the land by future generations.”

That’s not land ownership in the fee-simple sense of the term. It locks in communal

ownership, which I and many others have argued is at the root of the poverty seen in many aboriginal communities.

Another big question: Is there any future for B.C.’s 20-year-old treaty process, or will this precedent-setting case send more First Nations to court, or to the barricades as the Tsilhqot’in did on a logging road in 1983?

One of the unique advantages that have emerged from the handful of modern treaties in B.C. is that aboriginal communities have more options in land ownership. By voluntary agreement, they can convert land to fee-simple ownership, making it available for mortgage or sale. Modern treaty holders also get out from under the federal Indian Act, which remains in force despite this latest decision.

One of the big questions asked in the days after the Tsilhqot’in decision was this: Is the Northern Gateway pipeline project dead?

None of the aboriginal communities

Federal and provincial jurisdiction still applies, and their authority varies with the strength of the aboriginal title claim

along the pipeline route has this kind of declared aboriginal title. Few if any would have a similar strength of claim as the Tsilhqot’in, who fought a small war to defend their territory from a wave of gold seekers in the 1860s.

One that does is the Haida Nation, whose occupation of a beautiful group of islands was long defended militarily, and never challenged by any other aboriginal group.

Among others, the Haida Nation was represented in the Tsilhqot’in case as interveners. Council of the Haida Nation president Peter Lantin said after the decision that his team is preparing its own aboriginal title case for trial.

Few doubt that this assertion of title will be successful, either by negotiation or court ruling. But there is a unique aspect to the Haida claim that would set another precedent.

They claim title to the ocean around Haida Gwaii, a challenge to anyone wishing to sail tankers through.

Opposed to moving traffic Current school system is onto North Railway Avenue short-changing students The story in last Friday’s Record states that I am opposed to council’s plan to revitalize downtown.

Let me be clear, I am not opposed to a revitalized downtown. I am opposed to moving Highway 7 onto North Railway Avenue. I am opposed to seeing big trucks moving in opposite directions on a narrow urban street especially when the West Coast Express is coming in. I am opposed to the loss of many, many parking spaces on North Railway which will kill the businesses struggling there. I am also opposed to two-way traffic on First Avenue which will require truck loading zones taking away more parking.

I am opposed to the district going into the landlord business which they did by spending

almost $2 million of taxpayers’ money to purchase the old Overwaitea building between James and Welton streets. I am opposed to the district spending millions to build expensive city-owned and operated tiered parking lots. I oppose the expenditure of many more millions chasing an unrealistic daydream including a civic centre and new city hall downtown as depicted on page 40 of the revitalization plan on the district website.

I am particularly in favour of developing a realistic approach with the businesses and property owners downtown that does not require taxing the vast majority in Mission who never go downtown.

Re: Reconsider decision to merge high schools, June 27 edition.

I read with interest Scott Young’s June 27 view of the high school configuration forum and the board’s unanimous decision to move to a single high school by September 2015.

Contrary to the opinion expressed, the board’s move to provide a comprehensive senior high school curriculum has not been rushed and is, in no manner, a “Band-Aid solution.�

Despite extremely challenging circum-

stances, including a massive debt inherited from previous years, chronic underfunding by the provincial government and provincially controlled labour strife, the current board of education has brought the district’s financial house in order and has begun the process of addressing parental demands for better program offerings.

Last year, instead of closing schools, the board took action and opened both a long-requested traditional school and an arts-based curriculum school. Parental

response to this move has been overwhelmingly supportive, and both schools now have waiting lists.

Addressing the challenges of delivering a comprehensive high school curriculum in a small community will not be easy. At the November forum, we heard clearly from parents and staff that our current system was short-changing our senior students.

Due to declining enrolment and the previous decision to combine Grades 7 to 12 in three separate schools, Mission students are encounter-

ing difficulties accessing even basic courses.

We are left with a system that cannot offer the advanced science and mathematics courses required for our students to be competitive in university.

Trades and technical course offerings have declined to such an extent that basic skills like welding and carpentry are not readily available to students.

As such, Mission students are at a distinct disadvantage when applying for entry into advanced trades trainCONTINUED ON 10

Even the sports programs we offer are restricted by dividing our senior students into three separate schools. Being divided into three very small high schools is limiting our secondary students’ current education as well as future academic and professional prospects.

After the November forum, board members and senior staff continued to receive very diverse opinions from students, parents and staff about our current high schools.

A variety of solutions were also offered as possible

alternatives.

This spring, staff reached the conclusion that Mission’s high schools had reached a breaking point in its ability to maintain the full spectrum of course offerings.

The superintendent recommended to the board that the only viable option was to consolidate senior students into a single school. September 2015 was viewed as a challenging but obtainable target date.

To postpone beyond this date would be condemning another year of graduates to inadequate course offerings.

It is important to note that many deci-

sions still need to be made and that consultation with students, parents, staff and the community will still take place.

The board has hired a consultant to help guide us through this process.

The summer promises to be a very busy time for staff, and I suspect plenty of public debate will fill the editorial and opinion pages of the Mission Record this fall.

I look forward to that debate and to my part in building a high school system that offers our students a broad spectrum of opportunities.

Mission inspector retires Richard Konarski served for 37 years Carol Aun MISSION RECORD

One of Mission’s top crime fighters is putting away his badge and gun and taking out his favourite superhero uniform.

After Mission RCMP Insp. Richard Konarski retires from the force, he plans to train for and participate in marathons, half marathons, and triathlons. His next major stop is the Avengers Super Heroes half marathon in Disneyland, Calif. in November. He hasn’t decided which character to dress up as yet. He was Superman in this year’s Sun Run, and he’s considering the Man of Steel outfit again, but he’s uncertain whether a DC comic character should crash a Marvel, creators of the Avengers, party. He’ll have a few months to think about it.

Konarski, 55, has been with the RCMP for 37 years and this is his last week of duty. At the end of the week, he’ll be taking down his Superman and Batman posters and packing away his superhero coffee mug.

The comic book characters on the wall have provided a bit of fun around the office and a lot of inspiration, said Konarski.

“Each character has certain flaws (for Superman, it’s kryptonite), but also extraordinary abilities,” the inspector explained. “That’s in every person. Call it a superpower, or whatever you want, but what will you do with it? How will you impact the rest of the world with it?”

Konarski believes his superpower is determination. He sets a goal and goes for it. That’s

how he moved through the RCMP ranks and eventually became an inspector in charge of a detachment.

Konarski joined the RCMP in 1977 and was first posted to Powell River in 1978. He spent the next 10 years in Port McNeill and Port Alberni on Vancouver Island before being transferred to Mission in 1988.

In 1994, he was promoted to corporal and moved to Maple Ridge where he worked in the serious crime unit. He stayed there for three years until he became a sergeant and relocated to headquarters as a polygraph examiner.

Four years later, Konarski was moved to Langley where he was promoted to staff sergeant. He stayed there for three years before being named an inspector in Surrey. More than six years after his last promotion, Konarski landed the position as officer in charge of the Mission RCMP detachment in 2011.

During his tenure here, Konarski developed a crime reduction strategy that has reduced property crime in the community and strengthened relationships with partner groups. He also established a foot patrol downtown, a program to work with youth at risk, and a plan to focus on domestic violence.

In his retirement, Konarski, a Mission resident, will work on finishing his PhD at Simon Fraser University on risk assessment in domestic violence, and look after Hatzic Park, a park he adopted.

Our River-Our Heritage The Laqamel dance group will be a significant part of opening ceremonies for Mission’s second annual BC Day at the Mission waterfront. Communities in Bloom Society’s BC Day Committee has been hard at work and its schedule is in place for Monday, August 4th at Spirit Square in Jack Poole Harbourside Park, from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m.

BC Day in Mission is another free event for local and visiting families and also a chance to share our pride in being citizens of a beautiful province and a friendly community. For many of us, part of this pride has resulted from knowing Mission area’s rich history, made up of the contributions of First Nations people and the pioneer groups whom they welcomed to Sto:lo territory (Sto:lo is the Halqemeylem word for “river”).

Speaking personally, I learned first-hand to appreciate this history from two sources: Sto:lo elders during nearly three decades I lived and worked in their communities,

and from two wonderful members of the Mission Historical Society, Muriel Windebank and Mildred Vollick.

At BC Day 2014, we hope to provide families with a glimpse of this dual history with musicians and dancers every half hour. “Welcomers” will wear costumes representing diverse groups, including Metis, First Nations, South Asian, European and Scandinavian people. Other features are community displays (all spaces are now spoken for), food vendors and children’s activities---including face painting, story-telling and bouncy castle.

Gaucher relishes leadership role with national hoops squad Dan KINVIG ABBOTSFORD NEWS

At this stage of her illustrious career with the Canadian senior women’s basketball team, Kim Gaucher has been on the squad longer than any other player.

It’s a distinction to be proud of, and one that was previously held by fellow Mission native and Heritage Park Secondary product Teresa Gabriele, the veteran point guard who retired after the 2012 London Olympics.

But Gaucher (nee Smith), who made her national team debut way back in 2001 at the age of 16, wants to clarify one crucial point.

“I’ve been here the longest, but I’m not the oldest, so that makes me feel awesome,” the 30-year-old said with a laugh, alluding to the fact that point guard Shona Thorburn is 31.

“I actually played with Shona at the University of Utah – she’s one of my good friends, so I always bug her – ‘Thanks being around, because I don’t want to be the old lady on the team.’”

Jokes aside, Gaucher embraces her leadership role with Team Canada, which is gearing up for the FIBA World Championship in Turkey in September.

The team is currently in the midst of a training camp in Edmonton, capped by a trio of exhibition games this week versus Brazil.

“I feel like I’ve had this (leadership) role for the past five or six years,” Gaucher said. “It’s something I’m comfortable with – I know the offence very well, and I love that I can be an older player and teach the ropes to the younger kids and kind of hand off the torch. I think that’s a lot of fun.”

Gaucher is ecstatic about the depth of young talent flooding the Canadian senior women’s squad, led by the likes of twin sisters Michelle and Katherine Plouffe, explosive UCLA point guard Nirra Fields, and University of Connecticut-bound guard Kia Nurse.

“The game of basketball is really growing in Canada,” she said.

“We’ve changed how we

Gaucher, who got married in 2013, elected not to play professionally in Europe this past season. Magic show at Mission Farmer’s Market July 12 Special events have been organized for Children’s Day at the Mission Farmer’s Market on July 12.

Next Saturday come see cows at the market in the Mobile Dairy Classroom and AdoptA-Block will have a fun craft for the kids. Don’t miss the award-winning Norden the Magician, who will be wowing the crowds at 10:15 a.m.

The market is an

opportunity to shop local, with fresh produce available every Saturday, as well as local products like honey, naturally raised meat, eggs, preserves, soaps, crafts, plants and flowers. Enjoy some authentic Mexican or Indian food as well as locally made cheese. There is also the weekly Heart of the Market feature, with displays by local community groups

Children can learn about history this summer

and organizations, live music, storytime, a craft for the kids and face painting. It’s always a great social event and a chance to meet the people who make, bake and grow our food.

Bring them to the Mission Museum where they can discover the joy of history.

The Mission Museum hosts its annual Kids’ Club program every Friday through July and August.

This year, children can explore the famous Mission Soapbox Derby in Derby or Bust!, learn the skills of hand and machine sewing in Quilting Bee, experience aspects of another culture in Mission’s Old Chinatown, recreate the story of the infamous Billy Miner and the Great Train Robbery in Hands Up!, make Medicine

pouches and ceremonial talking sticks in People of the River, churn butter and do laundry like the pioneers of Mission in Little House on the Flats, write a letter with quill and ink, and seal it with wax in Signed, Sealed & Delivered, and have some old-fashioned fun with Pioneer Games like hopscotch, kick the can and potato-sack racing.

The program is for children ages six to 10, and the events run Fridays from 1 to 3 p.m.

Parents are not required to stay, and the cost is $8 per child, per session or $60 for all eight weeks. If you reg-

ister for the whole summer, your child will get a free T-shirt.

Pre-reg istration and pre-payment preferred. Private group bookings are also available on alternate days.

Volunteers are also sought to assist with this program.

Mission pianist to train with the best A Mission student has been selected to train at one of the world’s best classical music schools next month.

Eighteen-year-old pianist Paul Williamson will be playing with more than 80 students from Beijing, Shanghai, Krakow, Warsaw, New York, and San Francisco in the Morningside Music Bridge program at the Mount Royal Conservatory in Calgary.

The prestigious international summer training program focuses on performance, and

numerous recitals are being planed throughout July at the university’s Leacock Theatre.

The international students, ages 12-18, live with host families for the month. The program it tuition-free as all students are admitted on full scholarships.

Be Mosquito Smart!

With summer now upon us, the adult mosquitoes appear to have arrived just in time for the July long weekend. The Fraser Valley Regional District’s Nuisance Mosquito Control Program has been monitoring and treating mosquito larvae throughout the low-lying areas of the region since early May. While these efforts greatly reduce overall numbers, the adult mosquitoes that have hatched are now dispersing from their breeding sites along the river and are beginning to concentrate into the usual hotspot areas, where they can be a large annoyance to landowners and livestock.

Emphasis is on controlling larvae within bodies of standing water using natural biological control methods.

Since mosquitoes require water to complete their development, removing any sources of standing water will reduce the number of places mosquitoes can live.

Dump out any tires, wheelbarrows, buckets or children’s toys and change water in wading pools or bird baths weekly. Even blocked gutters and rain

pipes can produce mosquitoes, so make sure these are cleared and flowing freely.

The Health Authority recommends the following measures to reduce the risk of being bitten by mosquitoes: · Using insect repellent containing DEET (10% for children and up to 30% for adults) when outdoors. · Avoiding mosquito laden areas during dawn and dusk. · Wearing loose, light colored clothing when outdoors including long-sleeved shirts and pants. · Applying tight-fitting well maintained screens to doors and windows. · Keeping your lawn regularly mowed to decrease mosquito rest areas. · Eliminating or regularly changing any sources of stagnant water around your home such as saucers under flower pots, bird baths, wading pools, and other areas where rainwater may collect. · Keep lawns, bushes and gardens well trimmed so as not to give mosquitoes places to rest during the hottest part of the day.

Don’t push your limits when playing in water.

Many cases of drowning are the result of fatigue and swimmers being too far from shore. · If you cannot swim, stay out of the water and seek the shade instead. · Wear a personal flotation device. The depth and strength of lakes and rivers are often underestimated resulting in tragic outcomes. · Tubers: always wear a life jacket and a helmet. · Do not put your feet in fast moving water that is deeper than the length of your arm. · Remember alcohol and water don’t mix. · Watch your speed. Don’t race to the lake, and don’t race on the lake. Speed is a major contributor to incidents on the roadways and on the water. Slow down.

Don’t get lost in the backcountry Stay on the beaten path. If you do not know the area you are travelling in, a number of dangers could present themselves.

GETTING OUT OF GOD’S WAY The late writer Flannery O’Connor kept a devotional journal when she was in her twenties and a student at the Iowa Writers’ Workshop. It has recently been published under the title A Prayer Journal. O’Connor was a fervent Catholic and her journal is filled with interesting reflections on spirituality, as well as writing, which she saw as a way to express her spirituality and hopefully lead others to God. She laments early on that “I do not know you God because I am in the way. Please help me to push myself aside.”

Verdict This new Cherokee is off to a fantastic start. Sales are strong and the sharp design is bringing in buyers, not shoving them away. The 2014 Cherokee could not be further away from the last model; this is a thoroughly modern SUV with go-anywhere capability and aroundtown refinement that needs to be experienced.

The Chrysler 200 was introduced for the 2011 model year and replaced the outgoing Sebring.

It’s available as a mid-sized sedan, with coupe-like styling and a roomy interior, as a hard or soft top convertible with two doors and four seats.

The 200 is based on the same chassis as the outgoing Sebring but came with revised suspension geometry, stiffer body mounts, a raised roll centre, new sway bars and a wider rear track to improve both its ride and handling. There were also extensive upgrades to reduce cabin noise and these included acoustic lamination of the front door windows and windshield.

The 2011 edition of the 200 came in base LX, Touring, Limited and top-line S trim levels. The base engine is a 173-horsepower, 2.4-litre, 16-valve four-cylinder. A carry-over engine from

Sebring, it provides good low-end torque, decent fuel economy and is mated with a reliable four-speed automatic. City/highway fuel economy is 9.9/6.7 L/100km. Even the LX edition of the 200 comes with a very good equipment package that includes a tilt and telescoping steering wheel, four-wheel disc brakes with an anti-lock system, remote keyless entry with a security alarm, power windows, locks and mirrors (heated) and air conditioning.

The optional and newer 3.6-litre (Pentastar) V6 was a powertrain offering that came with a six-speed automatic. A quieter and smoother performer than the four-cylinder, this V6 can effortlessly produce 283 horsepower. Highway fuel economy (6.8 L/100km) is also impressive and almost the same as the base four-cylinder. Its city rating, however, is 11.0 L/100km.

The Chrysler 200 Convertible was available with the choice of two automatic-latching power tops. There’s a light-weight fabric-top with a glass back window or a (body colour) fully-retractable steel hardtop. Both types of folding top can also be lowered or raised remotely via the owner’s key fob, which is a neat feature.

In addition to being less expensive, the fabric-top is more compact when folded and allows more cargo space in the trunk.

The hard-top, on the other

hand, can provide a quieter cabin for occupants while driving and it’s more secure when parked.

Active safety improved with the addition of both electronic stability control and traction control systems as standard equipment in all editions for the 2012 model year. Otherwise, the 200 was unchanged. Some new paint choices were added for the 2013 model year, but other than that the 200 was again unchanged.

The 200 comes with an up-to-date complete passive safety package and its crash safety test ratings have been topnotch, both for the sedan and the convertible. In fact, the sedan achieved “Top Safety Pick” status with the IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety).

Consumer Reports rates the 200 as “below average” for predicted reliability, “above average” for owner satisfaction and “average” for owner costs. Used prices are reasonable, from a buyer perspective, and there appears to be a good supply of sedans, but not too many convertibles, out there for sale.

The Limited trim level visually adds 18-inch polished aluminum wheels, dual exhaust tailpipes, and inside upgrades include leather-faced seats. Like most Chrysler products the 200 offers high content and value, and it’s a good-looking car. bob.mchugh@drivewaybc.ca

Making sense of motoring madness in B.C. was the title of book published in the 1990s.

I recall it well because I wrote it and, observing what’s going on out there today, I’m beginning to think it’s time to prepare a new edition. The first edition dealt largely with the rules of the road; a new version should look at the motoring mayhem we likely face if we do not get our infrastructure act together very soon.

The dreaded words “carbon tax” and “tolls” are currently being bandied around in relation to the recent Metro Vancouver mayors’ $7.5-billion transportation investment plan. The conundrum is that while the public screams for new roads and transit it doesn’t want to pay more.

As I was crossing the $180-million William R. Bennett Bridge that spans Okanagan Lake to Kelowna, I couldn’t help but think that it was likely the last major bridge that would be built without the introduction of a toll.

A regional carbon tax, likely to be included in the cost of fuel, was a suggestion not well met by Lower Mainlanders, who now pay around $1.50 a litre for gas.

Nevertheless, it might be a more equitable approach if it is regional rather than one levied across the entire province.

Tolls are another option, but if they are charged only on specific new bridges, they tend to be expensive and thus encourage avoidance resulting in the clogging up of alternate routes. If one flat-rate toll is applied to all crossings then people who have crossed their area’s bridges free of charge for years complain of unfairness.

The Metro Vancouver wish list will go to referendum next spring. Let me predict it will fail to win enough public support and we will be back where we started.

We will be screaming for transportation upgrades but will have no way of paying for them.

We need some true leadership from Victoria on this portfolio and if we don’t get it soon we face gridlock in an ever-widening area of the province. keith.morgan@drivewaybc.ca

Alfred Mr. Alfred Bjorn, late of Abbotsford, BC, passed away and was promoted to Glory on June 28, 2014 at the age of 89 at Abbotsford Regional Hospital. He is survived by 6 children: Erik (Joy), Gerda (Frank), Tina (Peter), Arne (Lois), Chris (Jen) and Kerry (Jim) and their families. He was predeceased by an infant son and his wife Ruth. Alfred was born in Denmark and in 1957 immigrated to Canada with Ruth and family where they made BC their home.

Alfred loved gardening and family time. He will be missed.

Alfred was laid to rest beside his wife, Ruth at Hazelwood Cemetery. The family would like to thank the staff at Bevan Lodge and Abbotsford Regional Hospital and Doctor J. Chan for their incredible care.

John was born in Provost, Alberta and moved with his family in November 1940 to Yarrow. John bought a truck in 1949 and hauled asphalt, gravel and feed. John married Mary Wiebe on July 16, 1955 and farmed until 1976. John became a loving father to four children and eight grandchildren. Upon his retirement he enjoyed driving school bus for many years.

After residing in Yarrow for 64 years John and Mary moved to Tabor Court, where Mary passed away in 2008, and John remarried Kay Funk in 2010. John is predeceased by his first wife Mary and will be lovingly remembered and greatly missed by his wife Kay; daughter Lois Unger and grandchildren Logan (Shayla), Clayton, son Mark (Denise) and grandchildren Shauna (Brad) Irvine and Travis, daughter Eunice (Stan) Kroeker and grandchildren Vanessa and Jason, son Paul (Kathryn) and grandchildren Nathanael and Hannah; six brothers and their families.
