Motorists driving between Abbotsford and Hope may now get there a little faster with a 10 km/h increase in the speed limit on Highway 1 between Whatcom Road (Exit 95) and Hope. The hike in the speed limit from 100 km/h to 110 on that stretch took effect Wednesday, and other increases around the province will be phased in over the summer. The province announced the changes as the result of a province-wide rural highway safety and speed review. Two Abbotsford trucking companies joined others in the region saying the change won’t alter how their vehicles operate on the highway. “We’re [electronically governed] to 100 km/h,” said James Skinner, operations manager for Langley Freight Lines, which has an office in Abbotsford. The increased safety risk and elevated fuel costs just aren’t worth increasing trucks’ speed, he explained. The company primarily serves the forest industry and sawmills, but hauls nearly anything from potash to cement and pipe. Skinner said if the trucks ran faster, they would have to pass on the costs to customers. “We wouldn’t even consider it. The time sensitivity is not worth the extra money.” Clearbrook Grain and Milling also said the new rules will not change how it runs its business. Chris Tarlier, operations manager, said the “loads are so local, that this won’t have a major effect.” Continued on A6
