Alberni Valley sees explosion of farmers-style markets SUSAN QUINN ALBERNI VALLEY NEWS

T

wenty years ago, a group of Alberni Valley farmers got together to sell their produce as a collective, rather than from their own farmers’ gates. They were a mainstay at Harbour Quay in the summer, and a few hearty souls stuck around in the fall.

Now, going on two decades later, the market trend has exploded. The Alberni Valley now boasts three weekend markets—two farmers’ and one craft—and one seasonal midweek summer market for residents and visitors alike.

Last winter many of the vendors from the Port Alberni Farmers’ Market wanted to move to an indoor venue, feeling that Harbour Quay was too exposed for inclement winter weather.

They chose the First Baptist Church, or former elementary school in Cherry Creek. Vendors set up indoors and under cover outside.

The decision wasn’t unanimous, however: Vicky Lee of The Lee Farm and the Swanns from Leda Organic Farm were two vendors who decided it was better to stay at the original location.

“The ones that are here, like ourselves and the Swanns...I’ve been there for 15 years,” Lee said. “There have been some internal problems with the group. Some said we needed to move indoors.”

Lee disagreed, and stayed with her Harbour Quay location—as did a few other vendors.

When the original farmers’ market voted last spring to stay at the Cherry Creek location, Lee and others who wanted to stay at Harbour Quay broke off and formed their own collective, the Spirit Square Farmers’ Market.

So yes, the Alberni Valley now has two official Saturday farmers’ markets: Port Alberni Farmers’ Market at the First Baptist Church in Cherry Creek, and Spirit Square

“I think it’s a great idea,” says Lee of the two markets. “I think the city is large enough and sophisticated enough to support two markets. I don’t think there is a downside to it.

The parking is better, and vendors have three options available: indoors, outdoors under a canopy or outdoors with their own tents.

“What we’re doing now is we’re tailgating and that’s the proper concept of the farmers’ market,” Thomson said.

There are 41 members of this market, which recently celebrated its 20th anniversary, and 31 vendors are usually on site any given Saturday.

“It’s growing more and more as vegetables come in,” he said. “That’s the advantage of where we’re at; we can expand.”

Their numbers have increased since they made the move, Thomson added. “Even in January our numbers were up. Sales were up 20 per cent.”

he Port Alberni Port Authority is ahead of the pack in working with First Nations on projects that may impact them, port authority director, public relations and business development Dave McCormick said.

McCormick was responding to questions about a recent landmark case in which the Supreme Court of Canada unanimously ruled that the Tsilhqot’in Nation holds aboriginal title over the Nemiah Valley

‘First Nations can’t be ignored any longer...’

“More importantly is PAPA’s own priority to proactively engage First Nations in its initiatives such as the proposed container port and LNG,” he said.

The LNG and container port projects would be ensconced within Huu-ay-aht First Nation traditional and treaty settlement lands.

“Both PAPA and Huuay-aht have worked collaboratively to advance the initiatives and have formalized the positive relationship through

the creation of a protocol agreement,” McCormick said.

The proposed biocoal facility would be within the port’s existing facility, he said.

It is compatible with existing forms of industrial and marine related businesses permitted by the port, so no consultation is required.

Lowe noted that many of the crafters who started at the farmers’ market kept their spots, and like the Massops, now appear at both locations.

The craft market runs seasonally on Sundays from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Harbour Quay, inside Spirit Square. It opens the first Sunday in May and closes the last Sunday in September.

The market features artisans and crafters with woodworking, jewelry, paintings, knitting, homemade soaps and oils, wooden bowls and even fresh produce and bakery products.

Wednesday Sunset Market The Sunset Market returned to Victoria Quay on June 25.

In its second year, the market—which runs Wednesdays from 6–9 p.m. at

the “other” quay, along the waterfront boardwalk of the Somass River—is a partnership between the Hupacasath First Nation and the Alberni Valley Chamber of Commerce.

After three successful evenings in July and August last year, the Sunset Market is scheduled to run 10 evenings in summer 2014.

“This year we have secured more entertainment options and of course we’re planning for more vendors,” Jolleen Dick, coordinator for the market, stated in a press release.

“The Victoria Quay location is a most desirable venue as it has the ability to attract residents, visitors and people travelling through en-route to other destinations,” said Dick.

“The vendors are set up along the

That first year they started with eight vendors, but the numbers fluctuated.

“There was no consistency,” Lowe said. “They stuck with us and now we’ve built it up.

This year, the craft market’s fourth, there are 26 vendors, and 18 of them have paid in advance for their tables. “We have a very good selection.”

“What everybody likes about (the craft market) is they don’t have to phone to come,” she said. “It’s drop-in.”

The craft market also welcomes buskers, Lowe said.

Chris Massop and his wife Susan, who operate under the name Tinkles and Timbers, have been going to the craft market since its second year. They’ve watched the market grow just as their own business has. Susan creates wind chimes and other garden “bling” with antique teapots, spoons and beads. Chris creates wooden treasures for the home and garden, from one-of-a-kind planters and coat hooks to trellises and fairy houses.

The Massops have expanded their market exposure to include the Saturday market in Cherry Creek, and this year have been invited to participate in an art and garden event in Nanoose later this month.

And while the Starfleet Alberni Deep Space Port doesn’t boast of Spock’s talents, they are about to embark on some serious reading.

The Starfleet chapter challenges all other clubs and societies in the Alberni Valley to boldly go to the Port Alberni branch of the Vancouver Island Regional Library and explore the galaxy of knowledge and recreational reading by joining the new adult summer reading club.

“The majority of our group has already signed up,” said Lt. Gillian Shearwater, who last week was joined by crewman apprentice Vicky Bellis, resident Elizabeth Tawzer and Ally of the Federation Janis Cameron to check out the selection at the library.

“This is a natural angle for our group, where ongoing education and the quest for knowledge is part of our foundation,” Shearwater said.

Books some of the group’s members plan on reading for the challenge range from physics to the moon and solar systems, Star Trek tomes to cultivating vegetables and raising chickens.

Anything goes when it comes to the adult summer reading club, library manager Michael de Leur said.

“You can read anything at all, including newspapers magazine articles, websites, e-mail, etc. If you listen to audiobooks, that’s

comparable. And there is material available for downloading off the library website,” he said.

The reading club started on July 2, but there is still time to sign up. More than two dozen adults had already signed up the week before the club began, de Leur said.

The club runs until Aug. 20. During the seven-week period readers mark their calendars each day they read for a minimum of 15 minutes.

For every seven days that they read or listen to an audiobook for at least 15 minutes, they can come into the branch and fill out

Long way to go for mental illness

Few can argue – successfully, anyway – against the statement that mental illness touches everyone.

There are, of course, those with the diagnosis. Then there are their children, siblings, parents, friends and co-workers.

Even complete strangers are often hit with the ripples, as society is forced to bear the burden of missed work days, medical visits, inadequate treatment options, etc.

It doesn’t matter that research has led to many strategies and treatments that, when adhered to, can help sufferers live productive, even normal, lives.

Perhaps if it felt easier to talk openly about mental illness, things would be different.

And while time has led to strides in the realm of mental illness, it has done less for society’s acceptance of it as a disease.

‘Mental illness’ are still two words that, despite so-called progress, few afflicted with the likes of depression or schizophrenia or paranoia dare to mutter outside – sometimes even inside – their immediate family.

Make no mistake, there are tireless advocates for the mentally ill. Many of these individuals are parents, siblings, friends or colleagues of those living with a mental illness. A few are those individuals themselves, who have taken that brave step into the spotlight.

All know first hand the difference that acceptance – both of the conditions and the person trying to live a balanced, productive life with them – makes, and we can all learn from them.

Efforts by people like Olympic cyclist and speed-skater Clara Hughes, who on Tuesday completed her bike ride coast-to-coast to help squash the stigma, are helping effect change.

But there is still a long way to go.

No one should feel the need to hide something they cannot control.

The reality is, many of us share the blame for the fact so many people do.

ICTORIA – The Supreme Court of Canada’s landmark decision on aboriginal title held by the Tsilhqot’in Nation leaves many questions to be answered.

Perhaps the biggest is this: Will British Columbia exist as we know it today by the end of this century? Or will it devolve into dozens of semi-autonomous regions, through treaties or similar court actions, as the only Canadian province that never completed historic treaties?

The Tsilhqot’in decision appears to uphold the key finding of the 2007 trial, that 1,700 square kilometres of the Nemiah Valley west of Williams Lake are essentially owned by the people who occupied it hundreds if not thousands of years ago.

It’s not quite ownership.

Federal and provincial

jurisdiction still applies, and their authority varies with the strength of the aboriginal title claim.

Chief Justice Beverley McLachlin ruled that the province overstepped its authority by issuing logging permits in the valley in 1983. McLachlin noted that lawyers for B.C. first argued that the logging was to control mountain pine beetle, then dropped that argument in its first appeal. She also upheld the decision of the trial judge, one-time NDP leadership contender David Vickers, who rejected B.C.’s position that the economic value of the timber to the province overrode the then-vaguely defined aboriginal title.

Here’s McLachlin’s definition: “The nature of aboriginal title is that it confers on the group that holds it the exclusive right to decide how land is used and

the right to benefit from those uses, subject to the restriction that the uses must be consistent with the group nature of the interest and the enjoyment of the land by future generations.”

That’s not land ownership in the feesimple sense of the term.

It locks in communal ownership, which I and many others have argued is at the root of the poverty seen in many aboriginal communities.

Another big question: Is there any future for B.C.’s 20-year-old treaty process, or will this precedent-setting case send more First Nations to court, or to the barricades as the Tsilhqot’in did on a logging road in 1983?

One of the unique advantages that have emerged from the handful of modern treaties in B.C. is that aboriginal communities have more options in land ownership.

By voluntary agreement, they can convert land to fee-simple ownership, making it available for mortgage or sale. Modern treaty holders also get out from under the federal Indian Act, which remains in force despite this latest decision.

One of the big questions asked in the days after the Tsilhqot’in decision was this: Is the Northern Gateway pipeline project dead?

None of the aboriginal communities along the pipeline route has this kind of declared aboriginal title. Few if any would have a similar strength of claim as the Tsilhqot’in, who fought a small war to defend their territory from a wave of gold seekers in the 1860s.

One that does is the Haida Nation, whose occupation of a beautiful group of islands was long defended militarily, and never challenged by any other aboriginal group.

Among others, the Haida Nation was represented in the Tsilhqot’in case as interveners.

Apparently, we are the only community on Vancouver Island shrinking in size.

My humble, and perhaps unwelcome explanation is this: as long as the decision makers do their utmost to return to the industrial past, our population will shrink.

No self-respecting young person of today is clamoring for a job on an assembly line, when new technology offers so many more interesting options.

None of us newcomers came here for factory jobs, either, we came for the beautiful natural surroundings.

The mayor is far from alone, wanting to see clean water and whales.

He has been a tiny bright light of hope, in otherwise stale status quo proceedings from city hall.

Perhaps we could find a few people in this town willing to help last week’s letter writer to move to Fort McMurray —the best place on the planet to properly admire present-day human

greed and habitat destruction.

As for the letter regarding Opposition leader Thomas Mulcair, how about giving him the benefit of a doubt? What if his resistance to a pipeline across B.C., and tankers on this coast, has another, more altruistic motive than greed and profit for Quebec?

Perhaps he is genuinely concerned about salmon, whales, white spirit bears, and countless fresh-water streams we have here.

Pipelines going east don’t have as many obstacles, and in the other end, there are Canadian refineries, bringing jobs to Canadian people. Would this writer also like to move to Alberta, there better to advocate for Chinese interests?

Time to silence Valley’s critic To the Editor,

Re: Grass is greener elsewhere, Letters, June 26.

I know that we live in a free society where everyone can express their views on how things are being run.

But there comes a point in this transfer of views where people

who have stated their views should stop.

I understand that some people have nothing better to do in their life but to run down the very people who are working so hard to create a better life for everyone who now lives in this beautiful city. As for myself I need not state over again what it takes to step up in front of a town where the majority of its people are over the age of 55. Or do I. I have been following Mr. Berg in the local papers for years and he seems to think he is judge and jury for everything that the city staff is trying hard to do.

It’s time to be quiet and allow those who are trying to help even you to live better lives to make it possible.

Mr. Berg’s letter about our mayor trying to bring about change for this city is unfair.

Since I have lived here I have read his letters and I would say to him: why don’t you move to a city where you can enjoy what years you have left?

As a man I understand what these people who live in the public eye are going though on a daily basis; does he really know

what’s involved in the running of a major enterprise?

No. I believe from his letters that he had spent all of his life in the grace of a public employees’ union.

I’ll continue to read his letters with an open mind but I think he doesn’t know what that really is.

And as for the people who are running this city to create better lives for everyone, I say they are all doing a really fine job.

Protests full of hot air To the Editor,

The recent ruling on the B.C. Tsilhqot’in Indian’s land claim will be entered in the history books as being one of the more radical rulings ever rendered by the Supreme Court of Canada.

Without any consideration for the rights and needs of the other 4.5 million British Columbians it arbitrarily ruled all B.C. Crown lands and resources belong to the First Nations.

It has put a big dark cloud of uncertainty over the province of B.C., as well as the rest of

Canada in terms of citizenship, economic development, and rights to title and resources for all Canadians, Indians included.

The failure of the B.C. government to consult is one issue, however, entitlement is quite another.

The court failed to make that distinction, and rendered a ruling that is unbelievably one-sided.

The ruling is also devastating for millions of multigeneration Canadians who were born and raised on Canadian soil, not to mention millions of immigrants who came to Canada and were told “we are all united as citizens and equal under the law.”

In other countries, when you become a citizen, you become a full partner with the same rights and responsibilities as all the other citizens.

That will never be the case in Canada for as long as we continue to be a British colony.

This ruling is just one more example of a dysfunctional judiciary that is appointed on a political whim, and accountable to absolutely no-one.

Student beats medical odds to attend grad GRAD 2014: | A debilitating medical condition prevented Grade 12 student Denae Edgar from attending prom but she vowed to make it to grad and did.

lberni District Secondary School Grade 12 student Denae Edgar joined more than 200 graduates who walked the stage at the AV Multiplex to receive their certificates of completion.

Adorned in her red grad gown and cap Edgar walked on the stage as a Grade 12 student then walked down the runway and into adult life.

Her achievement is remarkable not because she graduated but because she was physically able to attend the ceremony.

Just weeks before, a medical condition prevented her from attending prom.

In early June, Edgar had gone grad dress shopping in Nanaimo and picked out her dress, shoes and accessories and she’d made final plans for the June 7 prom.

“I really felt grad coming after the May long weekend,” Edgar said. “I was sitting around the fire with friends at Sproat Lake and I thought ‘I’m graduating and leaving here in less than four months’”.

On Wednesday, June 4 Edgar was going about her day at school. She was only taking two classes and worked at a job the rest of the time. She felt a little off by noon.

“My stomach started feeling funny and then it started to hurt,” Edgar said.

She went home to get ready for work but the pain wouldn’t subside and was getting worse. She went to work but the pain was too much to take.

“I stayed at work for 20 minutes but the pain was so bad that I was hunched over and

knew I had to go,” she said.

Edgar tried to go to the walk-in clinic but it was closed. She went to West Coast General Hospital where she waited in the emergency room for three hours before a doctor finally examined her.

“When he pressed on my stomach it hurt like nothing I’ve felt

stomach required staples to close.

Merely laughing tensed her stomach and caused pain.

“That was hard because I’m the kind of person who likes to laugh and have fun,” Edgar said.

She spent Friday and Saturday recovering in hospital. Edgar vowed not to miss prom and tried to take a few

She checked into hospital and was prescribed morphine which didn’t stop the pain, and her blood pressure began to drop.

The next morning a scan revealed that a cyst burst and a large amount of blood had pooled around one of her ovaries.

Doctors operated on Edgar from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. They repaired the damage and managed to save her ovary but Edgar was left in a lot of pain. “It hurt so bad when they moved me from one bed to another.”

The incision in her

steps on June 7 but the pain was too much to take.

“The surgeon said I shouldn’t go because it would tear my incision. I got really emotional and really sad because I didn’t want to miss it, but I was going to.”

On the evening of prom Edgar’s friends who were also graduating visited her in hospital before going to prom.

Edgar sat in her room until her stepmother came in and asked her to come to the ward’s visiting area. “My family set up a mini-prom for me with cake, balloons and decorations,” she said. “They had to be serious though because I still couldn’t laugh. I cried though.”

Edgar left hospital and spent a week at home in bed. The standout athlete would have gone stircrazy if not for home entertainment. “When you’re laid up in bed then Netflix is the thing,” she said.

Edgar made it to ADSS on the last day of school (June 13) to get her yearbook signed and to say goodbye to some teachers.

She also managed to attend the ADSS awards ceremony that same day. She won the Barry Gus Crisis Response Memorial Bursary as well as a Dogwood District Authority Award for volunteer work.

A member of the Ditidaht First Nation, Edgar attended the Nuu-chah-nulth Graduation Ceremony on June 13 where she got to wear her prom dress for the first time.

“I was excited because that was the moment I’d been waiting for all year,” she said. “I missed prom but I got to feel the same thing at the NTC grad. It made up for a lot.”

Edgar is focusing her attention on her future now.

She’s set to attend Camosun College in September where she will be studying child and youth care for two years before transferring to the University of Victoria to complete her degree. She hopes to work with children when done.

The experience has both tempered and wizened Edgar. “It’s been hard and I feel like I missed a lot in the last two weeks,” she said.

Grad ceremonies complete for Alberni SUSAN QUINN ALBERNI VALLEY NEWS

T

he advice came in many forms, from a monologue from Port Alberni Mayor John Douglas to a recitation of Dr. Seuss’ Oh, the Places You’ll Go from acting principal Rob Souther, and ukelele accompaniment courtesy of School District 70 superintendent Cam Pinkerton.

At the end of it all, approximately 240 students had graduated from Alberni District Secondary School.

Friday’s grad ceremony (June 27, 2014) was held at the AV Multiplex.

The district’s administrators organized this graduation as well as those for VAST and Ucluelet Secondary School, due to the

teachers’ strike in British Columbia.

Pinkerton played the ukelele and sang a song to the grads to underline one of his pieces of advice—take risks.

“Somebody told me ‘nobody remembers your speeches, Cam,’ so I thought I would make it memorable,” he said while strumming the ukelele.

“I’ve never sung in front of a crowd before...I’m taking a risk, I’m role modeling and I’m going to sing on stage. Then I’m going to get off of it,” he said.

Douglas urged students to follow their dreams, but consider coming back to be invested in their community. “Keep your dreams. Have a plan A and a plan B. Plan A is to stick to your dreams and plan B is to follow plan A,”

he said.

Deb Foxcroft, president of the Nuuchah-nulth Tribal Council, stressed the importance of family in students’ future paths.

“They’re there to support us and be with us every step of the road, whether it be education or training or whatever it is; they’re there to support us,” she said.

She talked about her educational journey, which brought her all the way to university and back to the Alberni Valley to lead the Nuu-chah-nulth.

“Don’t let anything stop you,” she said.

“There’s always going to be bumps in the road...if you can’t go through it, go around it, go over it, or go under it, you can always find a way to move forward in a positive way.”

Verdict This new Cherokee is off to a fantastic start. Sales are strong and the sharp design is bringing in buyers, not shoving them away. The 2014 Cherokee could not be further away from the last model; this is a thoroughly modern SUV with go-anywhere capability and aroundtown refinement that needs to be experienced.

A

group of teens are getting a real-life lesson in what a career in the RCMP will look like at a special camp that started this week.

Thirty-three teens from Port Alberni, Oceanside and Nanaimo are attending the Central Vancouver Island Police Youth Camp which runs in Port Alberni from July 4 to July 14, RCMP Cpl. Jen Allan said.

The 21 boys and 12 girls will be taking instruction from RCMP members at ADSS, where they began arriving on July 2.

The camp is an extension of an RCMP youth camp that was held in Port Alberni two years ago, Allan said.

The 2012 camp was a mini-depot and gave students interested in law-enforcement careers the chance to see what training conditions are like and get some hands-on experience with policing.

This year’s camp has grown out from the earlier one, something that is more beneficial for cadets.

“We’re going to be having our sections from West Coast Marine, ERT and police dog,” Allan said. “We want to expose cadets to as many aspects of policing as possible.”

Allan grew up in Ontario and there wasn’t such a camp where she lived. “If there was I’d have been all over it,” she said.

RCMP Constable Shelly Schedewitz grew up in a separate part of Ontario where police camps were held. “The Ontario

Provincial Police had a camp for anyone over the age of 19 who was interested in attending,” she said.

The camp had a recruiting theme too but Schedewitz didn’t need to be enticed.

“I already knew what I wanted but the camp gave me better insight into it,” she said.

This year’s camp in Alberni has attracted 12 girls – more than half the number of cadets in the course.

The number is encouraging but not surprising, Allan said.

Wrestling camp goes ahead The Alberni Wrestling Club is once again hosting their annual Kids Wrestling Camp July 8–10 in the Alberni District Secondary School gymnasium. The camp will run over three days from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. (registration is at 9:30 a.m. each day) and will feature instruction from local coaches, alumni, and high school wrestlers.

Unfortunately, due to the labour dispute occurring in June, high school students were unable to continue the tradition of traveling to the SD70 elementary schools and introducing the students there to the sport of Olympic wrestling. The Alberni Valley Wrestling Club wants people to know that their popular summer program will continue and their

kids camp is being offered once again free of charge.

“When we [the wrestling club] introduce wrestling at elementary schools and the kids camp, we always stress the importance of fun and safety,” explains Aaron Keitlah, an ADSS high school wrestling alumni and wrestler at North Island College, who is a coach in the Alberni program.

“We always go through a proper

warm-up and stretch to limit the possibility of injury and try hard to reveal the enjoyment of wrestling rather than the competitive side.”

The camp focuses on participants in Grades 4 –7, although there are some cases where younger and older athletes have been involved.

Participants in the camp will learn from some of the top development coaches in the province.

Jim Proteau had the game of the day, firing a gross 72, followed closely by one of his playing partners, Cory Neilson, two shots back at 74.

First overall net of 63 went to Jacques Giovetti, followed by Vic Carlton 67 and Lloyd (Porchy) Fairley at 68. Also with 68

were Glen Barton and Mel Trelvik; next with 69 were Ron Clark and Russ Israelson followed with net 70s

PAMELA ASPINALL Born July 5th 1930

It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of our Mother, Pamela Aspinall on the morning of June 24th 2014.

Pam was born in Gillingham Kent England on July 5th 1930 to the late Herbert and Rebecca Ruffe.

She met and married Norm March 22nd 1950. They lived in Gillingham Kent until they emigrated to Canada in June 1967.

Pre Deceased by Husband Norman Aspinall, Daughter Kay Aspinall, Brothers Bob, Sid and Bert, Sisters Eileen and Peggy.

She is survived by her Son Peter Aspinall (Cathy), and Daughter Diana Poirier (Garry) , Grandchildren Trina Aspinall (Zoltan), Sean Poirier (Courtney), Sarah Howard (Chris), Rylan Poirier (Amanda), Jaime Aspinall (Ashley), Kim Osborne (Andrew), Step Grandchildren Tyler Ruks (Bebhinn), Alison Ruks (Tom).

She has Ć‚ve great grandchildren and two more on the way also many nephews and nieces in England and abroad.

Pam loved horseback riding and musical theater. She was a founding member of the Portal Players and entertaining people was her passion in life. She spent hundreds of hours sewing costumes for the many productions that she was involved in.

She travelled extensively with Norm visiting England, Hawaii, Egypt and California.

They also enjoyed several cruises. They loved their family time and took the entire family to Disneyland on several occasions.

A celebration of life will be held at the Yates Funeral Home hall at 4470 Gertrude St in Port Alberni at 2pm on Saturday July 5th 2014.

The family would like to thank the staff at Fir Park Village and Heritage Place for the excellent care that Mom received during the time she lived there.

TARON, (Uncle MICHAEL LESLIE Buck) March 18,1956 - June 24, 2014 It is with great sadness to announce the sudden but peaceful passing of our Dad Mike. He was born in Penticton, BC but moved with his family at a young age to Ucluelet, BC. In 1978 he moved to Port Alberni, Parksville in 1989 and finally residing in Nanoose Bay. Mike was predeceased by his son Matthew Joel; brother Kenneth; and parents Guy and Winnifred. He is survived by his son Sean (Ashley); grandchildren Brooklynn and Sean, and daughter Tanya (Andrew); brothers Allan (Caren), Robert (Geraldine), David (Patricia) and sister Carroll (Bob), along with many nieces and nephews.

A private family gathering will be held at a later date.

The family would like to acknowledge the staff at the Palliative Care Unit for their kindness, caring and professionalism during his short stay at Nanaimo Regional General Hospital.

Winter of Freedom heats up Rainbow Room July 18 Their name is Winter of Freedom; and they’re heating up the Rainbow Room in anticipation of their July 18 show as part of a Vancouver Island tour.

Winter of Freedom is a four-piece original multi-media hard rock/ metal band.

Winter of Freedom describes their music as avant garde, noncommercial, northern European influenced.

“We are influenced by other bands that are not your typical radio music style,” says singer Jay Craig.

“Bands like Porcupine Tree, OSI Paradise

Lost, Devin Townsend, Katatonia to name a few.”

Pool mural deadline looms Artists interested in designing a mural for the walls inside Echo Pool have until July 15 to drop into the Rollin Art Centre or call for more details at 250724-3412.

The murals will be made out of aluminum composite.

Still room in kids’ art camps The Rollin Art Centre invites children aged five to nine years to participate in our art programs, this summer. Camps run every Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday.

A high school choir from Nairobi, Kenya, visits Port Alberni on Monday, July 7 to give a concert of African music at Trinity Church.

Concert time is 7 ..

In recent years State House Girls’ Choir has won top honours in Kenya’s national music festivals and they are often asked to perform at state functions and conferences.

The choir’s recording of African Woman, written by conductor Leonard Wekesa for a 2011 international women’s conference, became a big hit on Kenyan radio stations.

The choir has come to B.C. to take part in this year’s International Choral Kathaumixw, held in Powell River July 2-5. The Kathaumixw festival organizes short tours for the visiting choirs and the proceeds of the concerts assist with their travel expenses.

Tickets for the Trinity Church performance are on sale at Rollin Arts Centre and at the church, or may be purchased at the door.

Admission is $10 ($6 for children 12 years and under).
