An annual Cranbrook tradition is the presentation of the Canada Day Citizenship Awards to deserving youth, and on Tuesday, July 1, at the Moir Park Canada Day celebrations, Cranbrook Mayor Wayne Stetski handed out the awards to nine students — three from Laurie Middle School, three from Parkland and three from Mount Baker Secondary. The students so honoured have, through their efforts, made Cranbrook and the schools better places. After the on-stage presentations, the mayor and students gathered for a group photo op with Cranbrook’s youth ambassadors. The forests and fields around Cranbrook are a haven of wildlife and a great place to partake in activities in the outdoors, but for some people it’s a place to dump their unused garbage. Despite there being no tipping fees for dropping off municipal solid waste at local landfills, there are still those who dump their unwanted items on Crown
land. One such item is an old makeshift camper that was dumped down Peavine Creek Road, just south of Cranbrook. The camper was disposed of sometime earlier this summer, according to Peter Johnson, who sent in photos to the Townsman last week.

The BC Association of Farmers’ Markets is putting on a province-wide selfie contest. The contest involves taking a selfie at a farmers’ market and posting it up to the contest page on Facebook. The contest ends July 7, so this Saturday will be the only opportunity left to take a selfie at the Cranbrook Farmers’ Market.
Erna Jensen-Shill, market manager for the Cranbrook market, said they are encouraging everyone to come down to the market and snap a shot of themselves. “We are participating in Cranbrook,” Jensen-Shill said. “Lots of people have their favourite vendors, or they just want to take a picture of themselves and their friends.” Jensen-Shill said the basic intention of the contest is to put
out a social media invite for people who may not have been to the market yet. “To give them a picture of what’s happening at the market, what sort of vendors there are and showcasing the great locally made, baked and grown vendors at the market,” she said. “The carrot on the stick, if you will, being some great prizes being available.”
