Jake Virtanen already had a Vancouver Canucks jersey with his name on it. But that one was bought from a store by his mom. But on Friday evening, the 17-year-old got a brand new jersey handed to him – on stage at Philadelphia’s Wells Fargo Center by Canucks assistant general manager Laurence Gilman. Virtanen was Vancouver’s sixth overall pick in the NHL entry draft. It was an immensely exciting moment for a young man whose Aunt Kathy got him his first hockey jersey when he was four. Virtanen grew up cheering for the Canucks, wearing No. 19 during his minor hockey days, in honour of Vancouver great Markus Naslund. On Friday, he met another Canucks legend, team president Trevor Linden, and talked on national television about his future with the team. “It’s an amazing honour,” Virtanen said in an interview with TSN. “It’s surreal for me right now. I’m still trying to soak it in. It’s amazing. I can’t wait, and I know Vancouver’s a great organization. “I’m going to come to Vancouver and try to be a complete player. Obviously, I still have things to improve on like any other player, and I’m really looking forward to it.” Virtanen, a talented 6’1”, 210pound power forward who racked up 45 goals and 26 assists for 71 points in 71 games with the Calgary Hitmen of the Western Continued on A3
