Ktunaxa applaud court ruling on Aboriginal title Last week’s decision that found the Tsilhqotin have title throughout their traditional territory could have implications for Ktunaxa SALLY MACDONALD

The Ktunaxa Nation Council is working with its legal team to determine how a landmark Supreme Court decision last week will affect its appeal against the Jumbo Glacier Resort development west of Invermere. On Thursday, June 26, the Su-

preme Court of Canada recognized, for the first time in Canada, aboriginal title to a specific tract of land. The decision essentially makes it easier for a First Nation to establish title over lands that are culturally and spiritually significant for its people. The case was brought forward

to the Supreme Court of Canada by the Tsilhqot’in of central British Columbia after the British Columbia Court of Appeal ruled the Tsilhqot’in had only aboriginal title in small select spots of their traditional territory.

Cranbrook switching to siphon system for Elizabeth Lake ARNE PE TRYSHEN

The City of Cranbrook will attempt a new syphoning program to move water out of Elizabeth Lake and across Wattsville Road starting this week. Since flooding started, the city has been pumping water with large water pumps and hoses across the road, but through discussions with the Regional District of East Kootenay, the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure and the Ministry of Environment it

has decided to set up a siphoning system to attempt to move the water. The city explained that the siphoning of water is much the same as siphoning gasoline from a tank. The city will be receiving two six inch diameter siphon pipes this week. When one end of the pipe is submerged and is higher than the other and a vacuum suction is created, the fluid will flow to the lower end of the pipe.
