Summer school pickets next: BCTF By Tom Fletcher

be declared essential services, if they are “secondary remedial programs provided to students who have failed a secondary level course.” Summer programs for elementary school students, international students or secondary students trying to improve a passing grade would not be protected by an LRB order, meaning the majority of summer programs wouldn’t go ahead. Iker said the union is also considering the plight of B.C.’s five modified calendar schools, which have three month-long breaks instead of the traditional summer vacation.

Teacher pickets will target locations where summer school is being carried out if they don’t have a settlement of their strike by June 30. B.C. Teachers’ Federation president Jim Iker announced that decision Wednesday, as he prepared for the first meeting with B.C. Public School Employers’ Association since a full-scale strike began June 17. The meeting has been characterized as “exploratory talks” dealing with possible mediation. BCPSEA has applied to the Labour Relations Board for summer school offerings to Rocky Mountain

They are in the middle of their final threemonth term and are facing more disruption than other schools. BCPSEA has also applied for essential service protection so they can resume operation. Iker said if there is no deal by June 30, BCTF negotiators would be available to continue talks, rather than take the summer off as they have done in previous disputes. The two sides remain far apart on wages and benefits, with a longrunning dispute over class size and special needs support levels going back to court this fall.

RDEK Electoral Areas A and B Volunteers of the Year awarded Submitted

The 2014 Electoral Areas A and B Volunteers of the Year, Cathy Broten and Saran Press have been hon-

oured for years of dedicated volunteerism. “Cathy is well known for her talent and her commitment not only to the people of the RDEK, but to the com-

munity of Sparwood,” said RDEK Electoral Area A Director Mike Sosnowski. “Her selfless dedication and kind heart make her a most worthy recipient of our Area A Volunteer of the Year Award.” Broten shares her musical talent every Sunday with St. Michail’s Choir in Sparwood and has done so for years. Her presence has been a very important aspect of countless funerals of RDEK residents making this difficult period just a little easier to bear. Each year, the seniors of Sparwood are treated to seasonal music at Christmas and Broten plays a key role in these performances. In the words of one of her nominators, “to hear Cathy play as beautifully as she does surely is a testament to the many hours she spends practicing and preparing for her performances.” Director Sosnowski presented the 2014 Electoral Area A Volunteer of the Year Award to Broten at the Area A Town Hall

to be able to recognize her with this Award.” Currently, Press is the regional and district 4H president and is the Beef Leader. She balances her numerous volunteer commitments while balancing a full time job, and a young family with her husband.

“Sarann gives endlessly for the good of our youth and her influence extends well beyond the South Country, touching lives all the way up the Elk Valley and beyond. It is an honour to recognize Sarann, and to thank her for all she gives to Area B and our region,” adds Slee. The RDEK made the presentation to Press at the annual South Country Crafts and Critters 4H Club Achievement Night, which was held Sunday night at the Pioneer Hall in Grasmere.

Atopy

With the summer equinox behind us we are officially in summer and the pollen count is high. For those of us who come from families with "atopy" this time of year can be miserable. Atopy is a genetic predisposition to develop an allergy, like hay fever, and produce elevated levels of an antibody called IgE when exposed to environmental substances like pollens. Seasonal allergies can be torturous, with itchy eyes, sneezing and fluids running down the face. At times, when my seasonal allergies were really bad, it occurred to me that they could be used as torture. There have been many times I have used antihistamines just to cope. While these drugs often manage the symptoms well, they are not a cure and need to be continually taken. One can also use vitamin C and a bioflavonoid called quercitin to help reduce the effect of histamine. Histamine is a compound the body uses to drive the immune response to environmental aller-

gies. A more effective and curative approach is allergy desensitization. This process helps return the body to a more balanced state where it does not react to pollens as if they are a dangerous substance. Hay fever occurs when the immune system perceives an antigen, like pine pollen for example, as a biological threat. The immune system reacts to defend itself from the perceived threat and it is this defensive reaction that causes the itchiness, sneezing, swelling and runny nose. Allergy desensitization helps return the body to a balanced state where the immune system is able to discern that the pollen is simply a normal and non-threatening part of the environment. An allergic reaction to foods occur in a similar manner and can also be treated with desensitization processes. This type of treatment can be much longer lasting and doesn't require continually taking medications or supplements to manage the symptoms.

Heritage on full display this summer One hundred years ago, a small community called Waldo in the South Country erected a small church at the urgings of Mrs. Charles McNab, wife of the Baker Lumber Company Holdings manager. Little did the town know at the time that this church would be the only surviving building of that community. Its first test came on an August afternoon in 1929 when fire destroyed half the buildings in town. While the fence surrounding the church burned, it remained intact. Around 40 years later, when the Libby Dam

was constructed, the town was burned again (after purchase agreements had been made) in preparation for the flooding. All the buildings were destroyed this time, except of course, for the church. The Sharpe family and the Waldo-Baynes lake Community Club negotiated with the province, resulting in having the church moved to Baynes Lake where it still stands today. It is looked after by the South Country Christian Fellowship, a group trying to gain heritage site status for the building. To commemorate the church, and the work and perserverance of

Ktunaxa Nation lauds Supreme Court decision The Ktunaxa Nation is very pleased with today’s Supreme Court of Canada’s decision to grant Aboriginal title to the Tsilhqot’in people to approximately 2000 square kilometers of land in the heart of Tsilhqot’in

traditional territory. The case was brought forward to the Supreme Court of Canada by the Tsilhqot’in of central British Columbia after the British Columbia Court of Appeal ruled the Tsilhqot’in had only

aboriginal title in small select spots of their traditional territory. “We stand in support and in solidarity with the Tsilhqot’in people and the Tsilhqot’in National Government,” said Ktunaxa Nation Council Chair, Kathryn Teneese. “We honor the monumental journey that the Tsilhqot’in people have taken and while this is

a landmark decision by the Supreme Court, there is still much work that needs to be done when it comes to recognition and reconciliation with First Nations in British Columbia. This is certainly a positive step in that process.” “Today, we are encouraged that the historic legacy of marginalizing the rights of Aboriginal peo-

ple in British Columbia is beginning to come to an end,” continued Teneese. “We will no longer be an afterthought when significant developments that

will have major impacts on our cultural and spiritual ways of life are proposed. We will have an equal seat at the table to help foster a mutu-

ally beneficial relationship with other governments to help generate prosperity for all British Columbians.”

When a large animal is detected, the system will trigger flashing lights on a warning sign to alert drivers of the potential hazard ahead. Thank You This year’s Strongman Competition raised $2500.00, that’s three times what we raised last year.

From 2004 to 2012, Highway 3 from Fort Steele to the Alberta border had the highest elk and deer mortality rates in the province. Deer are consistently present in large numbers, and elk congregate in the area from late fall to early spring. The wildlife detection systems will be installed at two locations beginning in 2015. The two systems will cost approximately $1.5 million. This pilot project is a recommendation resulting from the B.C. government’s Rural Highway Safety and Speed Review, and data from these sites will be used to determine if this is a viable option for other sites around the province. Additional recommendations from the review will be announced in the coming weeks.

Some things you may not know about Canada Day Submitted

During Canada Day festivities on July 1, people all across the country will be celebrating their pride in being Canadian. These festivities are also an ideal occasion to remember some of the major events of our history. 1. The name “Canada” was used officially for

the first time in 1791. It was created from an aboriginal word meaning “village”. 2. The British North America Act was adop-ted in 1867, making Canada a dominion of the British Empire. 3. In 1921, King George V decreed red and white to be the colours of Canada. Our national symbols are the beaver, the

maple leaf, the maple tree, and the maple leaf tartan. In addition, the RCMP in their red jackets are emblems of Canada for people around the world. 4. The red and white maple leaf flag was inaugurated in 1965, on Parliament Hill in Ottawa. 5. In 1967, as part of Canada’s 100th birthday celebrations, Queen
