Kimberley Council extends invitation to Municipal Auditor General, based on ‘theme’ B a r ry Co u lt e r

Kimberley City Council is going ahead with an invitation to the BC Muncipal Auditor General — Basia Ruta — after a unanimous vote at Monday’s regular meeting.

About one month ago, Councillor Don McCormick put forward the motion that the Auditor General’s services be requested, specifically around theMark Creek redevelop-

ment project — the Flume project, as it’s known.

The decision motion was deferred until a later date. “We actually deferred the decision and threw it over to staff to do some further investigation with respect to potential costs, and whether it would actually fit in with the Municipal Auditor General’s mandate,” Mayor Ron McRae said.

The staff report

came back to Council on Monday night, June 23. McRae said Council discussed the subject based on two aspects of the report.

“The report indicated there was a potential cost associated with having the Auditor General come,” McRae said. He added that city staff had done some research with respect to a couple of communities — Rossland and Cranbrook — who did have

the Municipal Auditor General come in, “but they weren’t able to reveal and/or nail down the exact cost, other than to suggest they were potentially substantial.”

McRae said the other part of the staff report was the Municipal Auditor General does audits based on “themes,” not specific projects.

The themes are listed as audit topics.

McRae said the Au-

ditor General provides a list of themes, or audit topics, and the interested municipality chooses a theme that best fits what the municipality would like to have the AG take a look at.

“It wouldn’t make a lot of sense to make a request to the Municipal Auditor General with something like a specific project, and that it would make more sense if in fact we were going to engage

the services of the auditor general that we would fit it in with one of the topics, and/or themes they do their audits around.”

McRae said on Monday night Council defeated the original motion that had been deferred — to invite the Auditor General around the specific flume project — and that a letter of inquiry be sent with respect to the City of Kimberley participating

with the Municipal Auditor General around Audit Topic No. 3 — “Learnings from Local Government Capital Procurement Projects and Asset Management Programs.”

McRae said that if Municipal Auditor General Ruta were to accept the invitation to come to Kimberley and take a look at that particular topic, “it’s probably a couple of years out.”

Leisure activities fees going up in Cranbrook City of Cranbrook has approved increases to leisure services facility admissions and rentals

The admission and rental fees for leisure services activities in the city will be going up five per cent this year and five per cent the next.

Council approved a

new leisure services fees and charges bylaw at council on Monday, June 23 after a lengthy discussion on the topic.

Denise Pallesen pointed out that they are talking about raising the fees

five per cent in 2014/15 and an additional five per cent in 2015/16.

“That’s 10 per cent over two years,” Pallesen said, adding that she wasn’t sure they had raised it by such an amount in the past.

Chris New, Leisure Services director, said that in the recent past, the fees have been raised by a more significant amount.

“Was it very successful? No,” New said. “We did do a 25-40 per cent

increase back in 2010 when we finished off the upgrades. That was to recover the debt servicing on the Memorial Arena renovation.”

five per cent increases.

When the Memorial Arena renovations took place, the council of the day directed leisure services to share the costs across all the arena users.

The first year they did 25-40 per cent increase to arena rates.

The next year they increased it five per cent.

Then between 2012 and 2014 there was a fee freeze after council approved the Leisure Services Fees and Charges Amendment Bylaw in 2012, as according to the report many users were decreasing or cancelling their ice time. New explained along with the fee freeze, the provincial switch to HST afforded users a seven per cent savings for the 2013/2014 season.

Five per cent increases over the next two years will also happen for aquatic centre rates, field user rates, racquet court rates and sports passes.

New said the increase to aquatic rates comes as ratifications to the new collective agreement brings salary and benefits increases of $16,000 annually for Leisure Services staff.

Utility fees are also projected at an additional $4,000.

“To recover these additional costs, aquatic fees, including lessons and admissions, require an increase of five per

cent,” the bylaw reads.

The increases to fees for youth swimming lessons will be applied in January 1, 2015, while adult and private lessons will increase September 1, 2014.

The non-resident rate will continue to be applied at the historic rate, which is a 100 per cent premium on the price of admission.

The city has sent a letter to the Regional District of East Kootenay asking to have a meeting about the possibility of moving from the two-tier pay structure to a single one.

Coun. Bob Whetham asked how the city’s leisure fees compare to other similar sized recreation complexes in other cities.

“We’re higher than average, that’s for sure,” New said. “Regionally we’re probably the most expensive.”

He said they are still cheaper than some larger centres like Calgary.

For a comparison, the city of Calgary’s leisure services fees are divided into two tiers depending on the facility. For an adult swim admission the cost in the lower tier is $5.75, while a senior and a child/youth is $2.90. In Cranbrook an adult admission is $5.45, youth and senior admission is priced at $4.25, and a child admission is $3.20.

homas Arundel was having none of it.

The 14th-century Archbishop of Canterbury was sick and tired of people accusing the church of being made up of nothing more than fat, rich, power-hungry hypocrites.

Having aided (some say masterminded) Henry IV’s overthrow of Richard II, Arundel — himself a fat, rich, power-hungry hypocrite — was now in a position to end criticism of the church. Mass arrests, torture, and being burnt at the stake became the new norm under Arundel, who sought to silence anyone from even thinking the church was corrupt.

don wine seller had a most unusual career path which included that of a pageboy, a knight’s squire, a royal attendant, diplomat, civil servant, spy, prisoner of war, and finally poet. His best known works were his elegy for John of Gaunt’s first wife titled ‘The Book of the Duchess,’ and ‘Troilus & Criseyde’ — the first occurrence of iambic pentameter in the English language.

Yet it is Chaucer’s ‘The Canterbury Tales’ which completely overshadows not only his own works, but the entire cannon of English literature. “English” is the key word here, because England had been speaking and writing in French since the Norman invasion of 1066 (with Latin still being used by scholars and the church). Chaucer’s work halted this practice in its tracks.

Like any good story, ‘The Canterbury Tales’ begins in an English pub. Here a variety of characters from all walks of life embark on a journey to visit Thomas Becket’s shrine in Canterbury. To help kill time on the journey, each character will tell a story. These stories

Geoffry Chaucer: Was he murdered? make up the famous chapters of the work, including the familiar titles of ‘The Knight’s Tale,’ ‘The Pardoner’s Tale,’ ‘The Nun’s Priest’s Tale,’ and the sexually charged (and for some reason the most popular) ‘The Wife of Bath.’

While the occasional tale is one of pious chivalry, most are suggestive, flippant, and satirical, pulling back the curtains and mocking all segments of English society. All segments — including the church.

One can only imagine Archbishop Arundel’s stroke-inducing reading of Chaucer’s

tour de force, as he lambasts the Pardoner who sells fake indulgences to the very poor, the Friar who lives off of bribes, and the drunk and lecherous Summoner. Many have noted that the entire work is a swipe at the church.

Unfortunately, no one knows Arundel’s reaction to Chaucer. While expert at burning heretics, Chaucer was a seasoned war veteran connected to the court, and may have not been so easily dealt with.

Six hundred years later, in 2003, a theory surfaced that Arundel actually had Chaucer

murdered. This theory was unusual as it wasn’t based on what was in the historical record, but on what was not.

Although there are 83 copies of ‘The Canterbury Tales’ in existence, many of them are only fragments. None of them are the original.

Also missing from the record is any mention of Chaucer’s death.

His tomb states he died in October of 1400, but this wasn’t engraved until the 16th century.

And in his 1410 poem “Regiment of Princes,’ poet Thomas Hoccleve discusses how a “subversive Chaucer” was “slaughtered” and “quenched.”

Whether this is proof of a murder or not remains unknown.

What we do know is that Chaucer’s work remains as relevant now as it did in medieval times (a recent Edinburgh journal chimed, “All the cool kids want to read Chaucer.”) While poor Thomas Arundel was nominated “the Worst Briton of the 15th Century” by the BBC.

“While the issue of discontinuing door-todoor postal service will affect residents within the City of Cranbrook and will most definitely impact postal workers, the use of city staff and resources for a matter that is not city business is not advisable,” staff wrote in the administration updates. They also wrote that it could set a precedent for that type of request in the future if it were granted.

The other request by CUPW from June 9 was to place a number of four by eight foot signs on Cranbrook Street and Van Horne Street.

For similar reasons city staff also did not support that request, again worrying about the precedent that could be set.

Staff advised that the CUPW could check with private property owners to host the signs on their lawn.

Summer Sounds facing concert budget shortfall Arne Petryshen Townsman Staff

The group that is putting on the Summer Sounds 2014 concert series asked council for a grant to cover expected shortfalls.

Louie Cupello and other volunteers were asking for $3,500 from council to help cover the shortfall and any unex-

pected expenses that may arise.

“We’ve come to ask for your help,” Cupello told council on Monday, June 23. “We’re experiencing a shortfall in what it takes to maintain the equipment and DJs.” He said they also try to compensate the live musicians for the show, as many are coming

from out of town.

“We are a large group of volunteers, represented by three of us tonight.

We represent the Cranbrook Arts Council in our endeavour,” he said.

This is the first year the group, as it is now organized, has put on the Summer Sounds program, though it is not the first Summer

Sounds.

This year, there will be 15 shows, each with a budget of $650, for a total of $9,750.

Two of those shows are Wednesday night Cranbrook Farmers’ Market shows.

Music licensing and miscellaneous expenses add up to another $525.

Financial sponsorship

of $7,950 leaves them with $2,560 short. The group added extra in case of unexpected expenses to reach the $3,500.

Cupello said some changes to the organization this year caused a delay in the planning.

One of the ways the group said the city could help is by only charging a single fee on days when there is more than one event on, such as Summer Sounds and Dancing in the Park, which are both under the Cranbrook Arts Council umbrella.

“In essence we’re charging both the Summer Sounds people and Dancing in the Park. It’s all under the hospices of the Cranbrook Arts Council,” said Mayor Wayne Stetski. “One fee could cover the entire day.”

Council put forward a motion to grant $500 to Summer Sounds, to match the grant it gave to Dancing in the Park.

VICTORIA — The coroners’ service says the dangers of drowning haven’t sunk in with many British Columbians, especially teenage males who believe they can swim out of danger even if they’ve been drinking alcohol.

A report released today by a B.C. Child Death Review Panel examines the drowning deaths of 35 young people and says that important water safety messages are not getting through to youths.

The report states that teenage males are particularly prone to drowning risks because they underestimate dangers involved in water-related activities and often overestimate their own swimming abilities.

The panel report rec-

ommends the B.C.-Yukon branch of the Lifesaving Society start pub-

lic campaigns that target teenage males about safe water practices, in-

cluding getting teens to take part in the campaign.

“Hello, this is Barry Coulter from the Cranbrook Daily Townsman.

New legislation has required us to have your permission to send you an email before we send it. It is conceivable that we may want to send you an email, seeking to interview you for a story. Do we have your consent to send that email?”

“I’m sorry, what’s this about?” you may ask.

(What is it about indeed!

Canada’s anti-spam law (CASL) comes into force on July 1, 2014, and introduces new rules around the use of “commercial electronic messages,” the alteration of transmission data, and the installation of computer software on to another person’s computer or device.

Countless day-to-day activities associated with newspapers, public relations, marketing — you name it — can be affected by these new regulations, including sending an email to enquire about stories for the newspaper, or information for a story, etc.

Failure to comply with the new rules could invite significant fines — like in the millions of dollars, man! — or even attract a private action, whatever that means.

Therefore, permission has to be given in advance, before emails can be sent and not considered spam. It’s the latest brilliant legislation from the federal government. It’s surreal!

So we, who rely heavily on unsolicited emails, are phoning up everybody on planet Earth, seeking permission in advance. That’s why they pay me the big

bucks.

“But why would you want to interview me?” you will ask.

“It could be that you will engage on a worthwhile fundraising venture,” I will respond. “Or maybe you will be acquitted of some heinous crime in a court of law, in some unfathomable distance in the future. Or perhaps you will win a lottery, or run for public office, or be really, really angry at some institution or aspect of society. Who can tell, the places you will go and the things you will be?”

“I’m not sure if I want to Barry give my consent to receivCoulter ing emails from you,” you may say. “I’m not sure if I want to get phone calls from you…”

“Wait!” I may interject. “We’ve already received permission from every current incumbent politician — municipal, provincial, federal. We’ve also trawled the hallways of the high schools, getting permission from every student in case they turn out to be someone important. We have blanket permission from the Music Teachers’ Association, in case a student turns out to be a rock star in 15 years. I’ve been working the phones 24 hours a day, getting ready for this legislation. I’m sweating blood. Have mercy. Say yes!”

“I’m getting ready to hang up the phone now,” you may say.

“Wait,” I will say. “Say yes, first!”

“I’m not sure,” you may say …

“Say yes! Say yes now!”

“But I’m a private person, who prefers my privacy, and if, as you say, in some unfathomable distance in the future I may want something to go in the paper, I can

call you, rather than wait to be harassed digitally by you.”

“But phones may not exist in the future,” I will say. “But emails will always be around. Say yes! Listen, we’ve been planning out the issues of the Townsman for the next 10 years in advance, every possible angle or potential story, election outcome, every permutation of every destiny of every resident here in town. Our focus is local, local, local. Can you imagine? We have hundreds of thousands of potential issues to choose from. Can you believe the work we’ve been doing? But it won’t work without you! Again I say, have mercy!

Again I say, say yes!”

“I’m really going to hang up the phone this time.”

“Wait,” I’ll say. “One more thing. We have permission from your neighbour. He said yes, just in case he wants to file a complaint against you over some building infraction on your property, sometime in the future. I told him we likely couldn’t report on that, because of the legal parameters we follow, but who knows, I said, things could change in the future.”

“Bob said that?” you may say.

“Oh yes!”

“All right, I’ll give you my permission too. If he files a complaint, make sure you contact me right away.”

“You bet,” I will say. “Though we likely wouldn’t report on something like that cause of the legal parameters we have to follow. Say, do you mind if I come over and get a picture?”

I will hang up the phone. 45,000 down, 5 billion to go.

Reading, believing the Bible What’s Up? A s a result of my recent columns about an alternative way of reading the Bible, someone said, “You don’t really believe the Bible, do you?” It led to a very good conversation, which went something like this …

I do believe the Bible, but you’re right that I don’t read it literally. In fact, I don’t believe anyone reads the Bible literally, despite what they may claim.

“What do you mean?

I do. The Bible is God’s word! The Bible says it, I believe it, that settles it.”

So I asked if she stoned her children when they cursed her (Leviticus 20:9). She said she didn’t — which is a good thing. Did she eat her meat medium rare? If so, she’s guilty of breaking God’s command (Lev 17:14). I asked if she shopped on the Sabbath (that would be a Saturday in the Old Testament). I also hope she tries to prevent people with disabilities from approaching God (Lev 21: 17–23), or that she treats a new mother as unclean for seven days (Lev 12: 1–5).

I went on to tell her that the Bible tells us

that it’s ok to keep foreigners as slaves as long as you treat them kindly (Lev 25: 41–46), and it’s perfectly fine to pass them on to your children as part of their inheritance.

“Well … that’s all from the Old Testament.

They don’t apply to us anymore.”

I told her I was relieved to hear that, because that means gays and lesbians won’t be stoned anymore, since that’s also in the Old Testament and so those prohibitions no longer apply.

She looked confused. “Welllll … some parts of the Old Testament are still valid.”

But if you read the Bible literally, don’t you have to treat the whole thing as if it were God’s word? You can’t just pick and choose, can you?

I went on to ask her if she honestly believed that the earth stopped revolving for a day (Joshua 10) … or if she really believed that God would order the genocide of men, women and children in enemy nations (1 Samuel 15: 3) … or if she honestly thought God was xenophobic and misogynis-

tic as well.

She pondered the question a while. “No; but … but it’s the Bible!”

It’s not just the Old Testament, I went on.

The New Testament condones slavery. It tells women to shut up in church. Jesus expected the world to end in his lifetime, and it obviously hasn’t. I pointed out some of the internal inconsistencies in the Bible. James 4, for example, tells us that to be a friend of the world is to be an enemy of God. Yet doesn’t the gospel of John tell us that God loves the world?

As I’ve been saying over the past few weeks in this column, I don’t believe the Bible was ever meant to be read literally. The Bible isn’t an answer book. It’s not a manual for living. It’s not a self–help book. It’s

not a history or science textbook. It’s not a book of family values or morals good for all time.

In fact, the Bible isn’t even a single book. It’s a collection of letters and laws, prophecies and proverbs, stories and songs, written over the course of more than a thousand years. It comes from a culture and language we don’t know very well. In fact, the Bible has more in common with other texts from that time and place than it does with 21st century understandings. The story of creation in Genesis echoes the same themes as the ancient Babylonian account of the origin of the world, the Enuma Elish. The story of the flood is found in ancient cultures all around the world, including ancient Jewish lore.

I told her that I do take the Bible very seriously. Despite the internal inconsistencies and the moral values with which we no longer agree, the Bible is an important testimony of two ancient communities to their sense of God’s presence in life.

Both Israel and the early church discerned God

at the heart of life, and related that presence in the stories we find in the pages of the Bible.

In the almost 2,000 years since then, we have learned some new things about life and how our world works.

Copernicus showed us that the sun doesn’t move across the sky, but that the earth revolves around the sun. Freud and other psychologists taught us about the workings of the mind.

Darwin and other scientists, physicists and astrophysicists have probed the origins of life on earth and indeed the very beginnings of the universe itself.

We, who discern the presence of God in life, continue to articulate that presence in ever new ways for new times.

We don’t simply parrot the lessons learned by our ancestors. We discern new ways of being faithful to the God who infuses life with blessing and hope.

And sometimes our answers will be different than those of our ancestors in the faith.

And that’s okay.

Opportunities for the disabled My name is Raux, and I have a disability. This piece is the third in a weekly series on living with a disability in a community like Cranbrook.

I want to promote inclusivity within my community: I want myself, people with disabilities and minorities to be included; while welcoming the rest of my community on this journey of our self discovery.

Part III – Diet Convenience vs Nutrition: For years my schedule for meals and preparation was dictated by others. Thirty minutes is not much time to make anything that is not processed.

I now have more control of my schedule and setting up my own routines. I’m taking control of my diet and actively participating in what I choose to put in my body.

I don’t want to get wrapped up in fad diets — prioritizing a single-digit size over a wellbalanced diet is not in my best interest, I want to be healthy, not hungry.

For myself, I’m focusing on eating a clean healthy diet starting with the recommended daily intakes and choosing the foods best suited to me within those guidelines.

There are plenty of milk and meat alternatives available if opting out or restricting

animal byproducts from your diet is important to you. I recently watched a documentary called Hungry for Change that really opened my eyes to some of the possibilities and options available to me.

Dieticians: Knowing where to start researching all the dietary options available to us can be overwhelming.

Registered dieticians can help get you started and oversee your dietary needs with the latest breakthroughs and time-tested data at their fingertips to ensure you’re maintaining optimal health and nourishment.

The Farmer’s Market runs during the summer season

and is an excellent opportunity to check out the fresh produce, support our local patrons and to socialize.

Our transit system even provides a free ride if you’re headed to the Farmer’s Market and bring a reusable shopping bag with you.

Ultimately, the choice is yours, even with time being a huge factor to consider when planning your meals, there is a lot of information available to us on the internet, in libraries and public services to find the right plan for you.

Cyclists, skateboarders reminded not to ride sidewalks Submit ted

Two weeks ago, a resident walking through the downtown area of Cranbrook was struck by a cyclist riding along

the sidewalk. The resident suffered injuries as a result of the collision, which included some broken bones.

City of Cranbrook

Bylaw Services reminds cyclists and skateboarders that under the Streets and Traffic Bylaw “no person shall ride a cycle, which includes a

skateboard, on any sidewalk”.

Being caught by Bylaw Services riding a bicycle or skateboard on a sidewalk can result in

a $25 fine.

Stoll reflects on second Stanley Cup title TRE VOR CR AWLEY Sports Editor

The delirium has passed, but there’s no mistaking that Jarret Stoll is in a pretty good place right now.

The Kootenay Ice alumn won the second Stanley Cup of his career a few weeks ago when Alex Martinez delivered the finishing blow with a double-OT winner to lift the L.A. Kings to a championship victory over the New York Rangers.

Though the Kings initially survived three straight Game 7 series on their way to the final, they were able to dispatch the Rangers in five outings.

However, three of those went to overtime, and two went to double-OT. A lucky bounce here or there and it could’ve been a different outcome.

“If you’re in the final, it’s going to be a close series, it doesn’t matter how many games it is,” said Stoll, in a recent interview with the Daily Townsman. “It’s two very good teams going at it. The Rangers were a very, very good team, came out of the East and beat some very good

teams. “[They] have a great goaltender, some great forwards, a very fast team that we seen right away in Game One that we had to deal with. “…I know we beat them in five games, but it very easily could’ve gone to six or seven.”

It’s the second NHL title for the Kings and Stoll over the last three years, as the franchise won their first Cup in 2012.

“It’s aways different; you win in different ways,” said Stoll. “This year, it was definitely a lot different than two years ago. Two years ago, we were up 3-0 in every series, which helps a lot, not only physically in getting breaks between series, but mentally, and getting through the playoffs.”

As they did three years before, the Kings were able to close out their championship on home ice at Staples Centre in Los Angeles. The city had it’s second parade celebration, and the Cup toured the southern part of California.

“I think I’m going to get it early on in August,” said Stoll. “I took it to Yorkton two years ago and we had a great day in Yorkton and the surrounding area.”

“Just trying to figure out where to take it this time around if I’m going to go back to Yorkton or take it somewhere different.

“Either way, it’ll be spent with family and friends and it’ll be a

good day, day and a half of looking back and celebrating.”

Stoll, the most decorated Kootenay Ice alumni in the NHL, was joined by another player who played in the same organization, as Brayden McNabb was called up to the Kings early in May. Though the two never played major-junior together in Cranbrook, their history with the Ice made it easy bond over their Kootenay connection in the WHL.

“We sat beside each other on the plane,” said Stoll. “I grabbed him and pulled him back there to sit beside.

“Just talked a bit about Cranbrook and how great a city it was and how great a time it was to play there and play for the organization. We had some good teams when I was there and we were fortunate enough to win. He had some good teams when he was there as well, so it was cool.”

No two championship experiences are

alike, and the Kings faced much more adversity during their march to Lord Stanely’s Cup. “This time around, we were behind the eight-ball from Game One, and had to battle back, as everyone knows, against San Jose, then had a very tough series against Anaheim, then we always knew we had to get through Chicago somehow to get our way to the final.

“We did that in seven games and found a way to win it against the Rangers.”

The Kings wrote themselves into the history books with their opening series against the San Jose Sharks, engineering a reverse sweep after going down into a 3-0 series deficit.

Only the 1942 Toronto Maple Leafs, the 1975 New York Islanders and the 2010 Philadelphia Flyers have been able to come back and win a playoff series after going down 3-0.

“I’m sure we’ll look back on it years down the road and realize what we done,” said Stoll. “When you’re in it, your focus is so narrow on what you’re doing at the time and just trying

to play games and win and find ways to win and come back.

“I think down the road, we’ll actually realize what we accomplished but it just feels pretty cool right now to be on top again.”

After their historic comeback over the Sharks, the Kings moved on to the Battle of Southern California, taking on the Anaheim Ducks.

Again, the Kings found themselves in a 3-2 series deficit after taking an early twogame lead.

But the hockey gods were on the side of royalty.

The Kings won the series equalizer, and punched their ticket into the following round with another win on the road in enemy territory.

That set up a clash with the defending champion Chicago Blackhawks.

L.A. got their first series lead of the 2014 post-season campaign, going up 3-1 before Chicago came back to earn a pair of wins and force Game 7.

Once again, the Kings made it through on another clutch goal from Martinez, who sent L.A. to the NHL finals.

Early bird Gran Fondo registration deadline looms TRE VOR CR AWLEY Sports Editor

Though the Kootenay Rockies Gran Fondo is still a few months away, the Early Bird deadline is fast approaching.

Riders who register for the event before June 30th are automatically entered into a draw to win two free Pacific Coastal airline tickets on the Cranbrook-Vancouver or Cranbrook-Kelowna route.

While it’s early, people are already starting to sign up, according to event chair Glenn Dobie.

“We’re about double this time, than where we were last year,” said Dobie. “So we’re quite pleased with the pre-early registration deadline.”

So far, there are just under 100 riders signed

up, with the eventual goal of reaching 500.

“If last year is any indication, that’ll go up significantly in the next 10 days,” added Dobie.

All the money raised from the event will go right back into the North Star Rails to Trails, going specifically towards maintenance and upkeep. Funds will also go towards the ‘Paint the Train’ project, which is already underway across from the city arches.

The Kootenay Rockies Gran Fondo is an event billed as a ride, not a race, where cyclists can chose between 50, 100 and 150-kilometre courses.

Field of dreams The Kimberley Hobos 12U team travelled to Whitefish this past weekend to play in the Jack Zerr Memorial tournament. The Hobos posted a record of four wins and two lossesâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;the only losses coming to eventual champion Lethbridge AAA All-Stars and the finalist Whitefish All-Stars. The Hobos will be on the road again for a 48-team tournament in Kalispell on July 4th weekend. While the Hobos were in action, the U10 team were in Columbia Falls to play in the Glacier Classic. The curtain has just lowered on the first half of the Sam Steele youth ambassador pageant.

On the darkened stage, seven young women in period dress are huddled in a cluster, arms around each other. As hundreds of audience members chatter in the Key City Theatre, the girls raise their arms and stage-whisper, “Sweet 14!” They come off stage and the entire backstage crew greets them with hugs, tears and words of congratulations.

On Friday, June 20, seven girls took part in the Sweethearts pageant, an annual Cranbrook tradition that is the crowning moment of Sam Steele Days. I was invited backstage to take in the pageant from a unique perspective, and I was surprised by what I saw.

When I arrived at 7 p.m., half an hour until show time, the green room was calm and quiet. One of the candidates, Carley Roller, was dressed for the opening number and sitting on a sofa. Carley wouldn’t be performing in the opening number though; she hurt her knee a week before the pageant in a softball game and was told she couldn’t dance.

With only a few days to spare, Carley had to learn a new talent – she was planning to perform a juggling act but switched to a monologue at the last minute.

She couldn’t climb stairs, so Carley had to change outfits in the men’s bathroom on the main floor backstage.

MC Jason Wheeldon arrives backstage with a tale to tell: on the way to the theatre, he lifted his foot to put it into his vehicle and the sole of his tuxedo shoe stayed behind. He rushed to the local tailor, where he was able to borrow a pair of shoes for the pageant, just in the nick of time.

Upstairs, some of the candidates are standing in the hallway outside their change rooms, practising their introductory speeches.

With 10 minutes till the curtain rises, longtime coordinator Karin

Penner gathers the seven candidates together for one final pep talk.

“You are doing this for yourself,” she tells them. “No one expects you to be clever or sensational. You’re not out there to impress anybody, only to be the best that you can be.”

And with that, the girls, dressed in brightly coloured flowing tops to go with their opening dance to the soundtrack of Rio 2, head to the stage. The curtain is about to rise on the most intimidating job interview they’ve ever done.

The first Sam Steele Sweetheart was crowned in 1966, and every year since then Cranbrook has appointed two or three girls to act as our ambassadors both in the community and around western Canada and the United States.

But the pageant isn’t just an opportunity for the girls who will be crowned Sweetheart and Princess. Each candidate goes through an intense six-month process that teaches them valuable skills such as public speaking, community involvement and volunteerism, goal setting, time management, financial planning, interview skills and etiquette.

They meet weekly from January to April, and twice weekly from April to June. After a coming-out banquet in April where they are announced as the year’s candidates, they begin to attend community fundraisers such as the MS Walk and the Relay for Life.

The girls draw the name of their sponsor from a hat in February.

Those sponsors each give their candidate $250 that she uses to buy material for her Sam Steele gown and her interview suit. Each girl has the same budget, to ensure an equal playing field.

All of that preparation culminates in the days leading up to the pageant, when a selection panel comes together in Cranbrook to prepare for judging.

Two days before the pageant, each candidate

Donna Butler tucks away loose threads on the girls’ outfits before the opening number. has a 15-minute interview with the judges one-on-one. The following day, they meet for afternoon tea with judges in an informal setting where they chat in groups of three or four.

“By the time they get to the theatre, those judges have had the opportunity to see the girls in a number of different settings, and a large part of the judging has been done,” coordinator Karin Penner tells me, adding that she and fellow coordinator Loree Duczek stay away from the judges, leaving fellow volunteer Robyn Graham to take care of the selection panel.

That’s to stop rumours about the successful candidate being a favourite of the coordinators.

Which brings us to here, this moment, with the girls lined up behind the curtain, nervously poised to begin their opening number. Suddenly, backstage manager Nikki Gipman raises the curtain, the lights and sound go up, and the candidates spring into action.

For the next hour and a half, there’s constant movement on stage and behind the scenes. Alexis Shuffler has only a few minutes to change into her interview suit to deliver her speech. It takes less than a minute and she’s

dressed, with Karin calling for a lint brush for final touch-ups. Donna Butler crouches to give Alexis one last check over, before Alexis rushes off to the stage, maintaining her composure all the way.

After each candidate has performed her talent and delivered her speech, they each change into their grand, beautiful gowns of the Sam Steele era. It’s surprisingly quick for the girls to don those many layers. Before I know it, they are slipping on those pretty white gloves to complete the outfit, and the first candidate is off to the stage to model the gown.

At this point in the pageant, each candidate is asked an impromptu question that they must answer on the spot for the judges to consider.

It’s a lot of pressure for someone who is 16 years old and facing a crowd of hundreds, but each girl handles it with barely a tremor.

Meanwhile, the sound has been switched off in the green room so the other candidates don’t hear the question ahead of time.

There is one candidate waiting in the wings, but she is hooked up to headphones blasting pop music so loud she wouldn’t hear if a grand piano fell onto the stage.

By the end of the modelling segment, all seven girls have started an impromptu dance party to the tinny music carrying through from the headphones.

Meanwhile, the chivalrous Dagen Duczek, 7, whose job is to present each candidate with a rose as they model their gown, is dashing from side to side of the stage to be ready for his next entrance. His mom, pageant coordinator Loree Duczek, is in the lighting booth running the show, but she’s communicating via headset with stage manager Nikki Gipman. When Dagen says he no longer wants to smile on stage, Nikki tells him that his mom promises a fast-food dinner if he complies. He doesn’t believe it until he can speak to her through the headset himself, and finally gives the audience a dazzling grin on his last trip on stage, to great reaction from the audience.

Finally, all of the girls are back onstage for the finale of the pageant’s first half. As they twirl and smile in their gowns, all of the backstage volunteers gather to watch. There are about 10 people working behind the scenes to make sure everything runs smoothly – and every last one of them is a former candidate herself. When the girls come off stage as the intermission begins, the backstage workers rush to congratulate them, each fully aware of the work the candidates have put in to reach this point.

During the intermission, the candidates visibly relax. In the green room, visiting royalty from across B.C. and western U.S. greet the girls and congratulate them.

The candidates hug each other, say how proud of each other they are, and chatter excitedly. There’s no sense of competition between the girls, and coordinator Karin Penner said they aren’t dwelling on which of them will be the next Sweetheart.

“It’s not about who wins,” Karin tells me. “It’s not about beauty of face or figure. It’s about bringing out the best in them.”

Cranbrook’s Jennifer Spyksma, a former candidate, Darlene Forsdick, a former coordinator of Miss Summerland, and Jo Summerfeld, coordinator of Miss Penticton, make up the judging panel, and the three are locked away in another part of the theatre making their decision as the second half of the pageant gets underway.

Before you know it, it’s time for the crowning of the 2014 youth ambassadors. Outgoing Sweetheart Makenzie Yates and Princess Alicia Leasak prepare to transfer their crowns, while the candidates nervously grasp hands as they smile at the audience.

With one last hiccup – MCs Jason Wheeldon and Christy Pick have trouble opening the sealed envelopes – the announcement is made. Kendall Bostock is the 2014 Princess of Sam Steele. Devon Kennedy is this year’s Sweetheart of Sam Steele.

With that, the show is over and the stage is flooded by friends and family of the candidates.

For an overwhelming half an hour, the seven candidates are swamped by well-wishers – photos are taken, hugs are given, flowers are handed out. Finally, as the theatre empties, the girls come together one last time and are whisked away to an after-party with their loved ones at the Heritage.

The Sweetheart pageant may be essentially one intense job interview for the role of representing Cranbrook, but it has lasting impacts for the girls who are candidates. By the time the pageant rolls around, each of them is mature, polite and composed under pressure, and these are skills they will carry with them into adulthood, along with strong friendships with one another.

And they had a lot of fun getting there.

Visiting royalty from all over the province and western U.S. states flock to the green room during the intermission to congratulate the candidates and prepare to give their greetings on-stage at the beginning of the pageant’s second half.

NEWS Palace repairs helped push taxpayer cost of British monarchy above $60 million ASSOCIATED PRESS

LONDON — Buckingham Palace says the monarchy cost British taxpayers 35.7 million pounds ($60.8 million) last year — 56 pence (just under $1) for everyone in the country.

More than a third of the money was spent on repairs

and maintenance to aging palaces.

Some 3.4 million pounds was spent in the year to March 31 refurbishing part of London’s Kensington Palace into a home for Prince William, his wife Catherine and their toddler son Prince George.

The work included removing asbestos, installing new heating and “simple redecoration.’’ William and Kate paid for carpets, curtains and furnishings themselves.

William has considerable personal financial resources to draw upon, including the

multimillion pound estate left by his mother, Princess Diana. He shares the proceeds of that estate with his brother, Prince Harry.

In addition, Prince Charles’ private secretary, William Nye, suggested that Charles and his wife Camilla — who are supported by the

lucrative Duchy of Cornwall estate — may have helped William and Catherine set up their new home.

As the accounts were published Thursday, Keeper of the Privy Purse Alan Reid said the royal household was keen to “maximize the value for money’’ of the monarchy.

1899 Murder and Suicide … A little over a year ago a quiet flirtation took place on the banks of Lake Calhoun, near Minneapolis, between the owner of a pleasure launch and the wife of a small merchant. The woman was beautiful and attractive, the man intelligent and prepossessing. Last Tuesday afternoon the story came to a sudden and terrible termination in the parlor of Miss Nettie McDowell’s house of prostitution in Cranbrook. The man committed murder and then suicide, and fell near his helpless victim, the life-

blood of both turning the carpet to a crimson hue. The girl cried, “Don’t Harry, for God’s sake, don’t”, but three reports followed and she fell. A moment before she had smiled at her murderer, when she fell she was writing to another, while in her bosom she had letters from one who was her husband, now confined in the Ohio reformatory at Mansfield. The fatal beauty of Mrs. Lillian Shotwell wrought her ruin, and the mad infatuation of Harry Brandt drove him to the desperate deed. The tragedy was a shock to the community and created for a time intense excitement. Harry Brandt had been living with the woman, but last Thursday they quarreled, and selling their household goods, he left Saturday

morning for Nelson.

Tuesday he returned, and when he learned that his assumed wife had gone to a house of prostitution to live, he seemed badly overcome. One o’clock he went to Dickinson’s barber shop, in the Cranbrook Hotel, and got shaved, and then went direct to the house where the woman was living. He asked for her, and the girl told the mistress of the house not to let him in her room, but that she would see him in the parlor. Then came the pleading cry for mercy, like the wail of a lost soul, three reports and silence.

Aboriginal groups celebrate title ruling Tom Fletcher Black Press

Aboriginal communities across B.C. are celebrating a court ruling that redefines ownership of their traditional territory outside reserves.

The Supreme Court of Canada has upheld the Tsilhqot’in Nation’s claim to aboriginal title over 1,700 square km in the Nemiah Valley west of Williams Lake, in a landmark ruling with effects on land claims across the province.

In a unanimous decision, the country’s highest court rejected the B.C. government’s argument that aboriginal title should be restricted to settlement sites and other places frequently occupied by semi-nomadic aboriginal people before European contact.

Joe Alphonse, tribal chief of the Tsilhqot’in Nation, said the ruling is a victory in a struggle that had its roots in deadly conflict with a wave of gold seekers during the 1860s. He said the communities need more control over resources to support more people living on reserves.

“We didn’t fight in this case to separate from Canada,” Alphonse

told a news conference in Vancouver Thursday.

“We fought in this case to get recognized, to be treated as equals in a meaningful way.”

Settlement sites and others used for hunting and fishing were exhaustively studied in a 2003 B.C. trial that granted broad title but was later overturned by the B.C. Court of Appeal.

“The Province’s criticisms of the trial judge’s findings on the facts are primarily rooted in the erroneous thesis that only specific, intensively occupied areas can support Aboriginal title,” the eight Supreme Court of Canada justices agreed in a unanimous ruling released Thursday.

The Tsilhqot’in case was strengthened by evidence that “prior to the assertion of sovereignty the Tsilhqot’in people repelled other people from their land and demanded permission from outsiders who wished to pass over it,” the judges wrote.

The case began in 1983 when the B.C. government issued timber permits for the region and the Xeni Gwet’in, one of six Tsilhqot’in communities, went to court to stop the logging.

Haida Nation president Peter Lantin said

the Tsilhqot’in case strengthens his island community’s title claim, which is being prepared for court. The Haida claim includes the surrounding ocean off B.C.’s North Coast, which Lantin expects to use against plans for oil tankers from the Enbridge Northern Gateway proposal.

Despite the long-running dispute and the Tsilhqot’in Nation’s refusal to take part in treaty talks, the B.C. aboriginal relations ministry signed a three-year “stewardship agreement” with the group June 10. The agreement gives the Tsilhqot’in $670,000 per year to implement a forestry strategy and other resource development.

B.C. Attorney General Suzanne Anton said the Tsilhqot’in ruling, like other aboriginal title cases, emphasizes that negotiated settlements are preferable to court action to settle claims in the majority of the province that are not covered by treaties.

NDP leader John Horgan said the decision shows the B.C. government should have accepted the 2007 decision by B.C. Supreme Court Justice David Vickers.

Getting More Strict … The provincial government is taking more pains to keep squatters off of its lands, and according to notices recently put up by the government agent, the land department proposes to be more strict than ever.

She Says He Rolled her ... One day last week Pearl Ransom, an inmate of one of the houses of joy in the row, preferred a charge of theft against Walter Turnbull, affirming that he took

He had a hearing before Justice Laidlaw and was discharged. Later the matter was placed before Magistrate J. F. Armstrong, at Fort Steele, and Turnbull brought back from Fernie. He had a second hearing and was held under $500 bonds for the assizes. The bond was furnished and he was released.

Wardner ... Last Friday Wardner was visited by a fire that came near destroying the whole town. It started in some unaccountable way in the kitchen of Mr. Beattie’s house and rapidly spread to the other rooms. Mrs. Beattie was scorched a little about the head while going out, and everything belonging to them was lost, including about $50 in cash. The fire then spread to Jim Burgess’ house, which also burned, but they saved everything but their goods in the dining room, amounting to about $250. They had a hard fight and it was only with a great struggle that they saved the business portion of the town. The fire was put out several times in the rear of the Central Hotel,

and at one time caught in the roof of the Royal Hotel, owned by Mr. F. Henniger, burning quite a hole in the roof. Very fortunately, the section men had just come in from work and, with their efforts combined with our own, that portion of town was saved.

Stop Thief … Constable Morris has returned from a brief vacation at his home in Trail. While enroute from Kootenay Landing to Cranbrook he fell asleep and awoke to find a man with his

hands in his pockets.

Fortunately he had spent his money and therefore lost nothing.

The man escaped.

by Kathy Mitchell and Marcy Sugar Dear Annie: Our son is married to a beautiful woman from India, who also happens to be bipolar. They have an adorable 16-month-old boy, and we love them all so much. While our daughter-in-law’s mother had a problem with her marrying outside their culture, they now love our son as their own.

I understand quite a bit about mental illness, as I suffer from depression, and my mother was bipolar. Before she was diagnosed, I was the target of her rants over the years. Now, it seems that I am the brunt of my daughter-in-law’s rants. She doesn’t discuss things that bother her. She simply goes off on tirades, with nonstop talking, and recently she called me a terrible name. I am so deeply sickened over this, I can’t even begin to tell you.

My son and I have always been close, and I have no desire to interfere in their marriage.

I help only when asked. My son is also close to his sister, who also has been the target of his wife’s rages. My son knew about his wife’s bipolar disease before they married, and when she takes proper medications and sees her psychiatrist, she is better.

I understand that sometimes the extremes of personality still come through, in spite of medication. My question is: Can people with this illness filter what comes out of their mouths? Can they learn not to insult and lash out at the people closest to them?

Or is that impossible to control?

They have been married only three years, and I can’t tell you how many times this has happened. The hurt just keeps piling up, and it’s harder and harder to forgive. Are we going to have to keep our distance from our son’s family to stay sane ourselves? -- So Sad Dear Sad: This must be a terribly difficult situation for you. It is possible that your daughter-in-law simply needs to have her medications adjusted, and you might suggest that to your son. In the meantime, please contact the National Alliance on Mental Illness (nami.org) and ask about their Family-to-Family program and other resources.

Dear Annie: I have a very rude and inconsiderate neighbor who thinks nothing of mowing her lawn at 5:30 in the morning and waking up the whole neighborhood. What can we do? -- Lancaster County, Penn.

Dear Lancaster: Can you speak to your neighbor directly and explain that her early-morning activities are disrupting your sleep? She may not realize how loud she is at that hour. If you asked her politely to mow her lawn later in the day, would she comply? Would someone in the neighborhood offer to mow it for her at another time? Of course, if she refuses to find a better time, you should look into the noise ordinances in your area and, if necessary, report her to the appropriate authorities.

Dear Annie: As an IT professional, I feel compelled to point out that “Hoosier Historian” was incorrect in arguing against digital copies of old photos when he said, “Computer programs change, and the photos are not always accessible.” The most commonly used file formats for saving digital images can be opened by many different software packages. In addition, if a less common program is used, it is not difficult to convert the images to the more commonly used formats.

I will agree with “Hoosier,” however, that original copies of photos should not be discarded, for the same reason that I would advocate making several digital copies of photos and home movies and storing them in different locations in case of fire or other disaster. After all, images of loved ones, particularly those who have passed on, are some of the most valuable things families own. Joseph John Louis Daignault July 30, 1934-June 15, 2014 John passed away June 15, 2014 at East Kootenay Regional Hospital with family by his side.

He was born in Cardston, Alberta July 30, 1934 to parents John B. Daignault and Eve Godin Daignault, the sixth of eight children.

As a boy, John started his working for the City Dairy delivering milk by horse and cart. He worked in local saw mills and then as a carpenter as an adult.

John played his fiddle at many dances and informal gatherings. He was a part of several bands including The Shetland Trio along with his brother Fred and Arlo Learn. He also liked to camp with family and friends.

John is survived by his children Louie, Shelley, Tracey, and step daughters Cindy and Sandra.

He is also survived by brothers Fred Daignault and Hector (Bev) Daignault, 6 grandchildren, 2 step granddaughters and 5 great grandchildren, a large extended family and many friends.

John is predeceased by his second wife, Mary Dupuis; daughter-in-law Diane Daignault; brothers Arthur, Paul and Armand and sisters Therese and Francoise; and his parents.

The family would like to thank Dr. Solcova, Dr. Ries, and doctors and nursing staff in the Emergency Department and he 3rd floor for their wonderful care and understanding.

There will be no service by John's request. Cremation has taken place.

If desired, memorial donations may be made to a charity of choice.

The Risk is real! If it is 26+ C° outside, inside a car-even with the windows cracked- the temperature can reach 37+C° in 10 minutes and 43+C° in 20 minutes. A dog’s normal temperature is 38C°. If your dog’s temperature reaches 41C° cell and organ damage begins to occur.

VONDA is a 9 year old all black medium haired cat. She is spayed and up to date on vaccines.
