City rivalry heats up over ‘living flag’ Drew McLachlan News staff

As Victoria prepares for Canada Day, the city’s annual “living flag” celebration returns – along with some friendly rivalry from Winnipeg.

Comprised of 1,500 to 2,500 people, all dressed in red and white and in the form of a Canadian flag, the living flag first appeared on the B.C. legislature lawn in 2006.

The concept was originally pitched by city councillor and former Downtown Victoria Business Association director Charlayne Thornton-Joe, who said the living flag has proven to be one of the most popular events of Canada Day, growing from 325 to 2,500 participants in eight years.

While Victoria may have the claim to the longest running living flag, the record for largest belongs to Winnipeg, which weaved its flag of 3,500 participants last year.

“We were inspired by Victoria [in 2011], so we issued a challenge to them to beat their numbers from the year prior,” said Jason Syvixay, Downtown Winnipeg BIZ managing director.

“It’s that kind of friendly, nation-wide challenge we take a lot of pride in.”

Living flags have since formed across the country, with Ottawa, Calgary, Langley, and Brandon, Man. all constructing their own this year.

Syvixay’s confident his city will still hold the record come Canada Day, and that moving the event to the newly constructed Canadian Museum for Human Rights

will draw even larger numbers than last year.

“We’re eager and ready to come out and defend our title again,” Syvixay said. “We’ve done it the last three years and we’ll be able to do it July 1 is Canada Day, and again.” we want to know how you

Victoria’s edge in the competition is the time zone difference, as organizers learn the numbers of eastern cities’ flags before assembling its own.

While Winnipeg may be focussed on numbers, Thornton-Joe pegged reducing the flag’s environmental footprint as a primary focus this year.

Organizers hope participants can be encouraged to bring their own red and white shirts by allowing them to take “prime spots” in the flag by skipping the shirt line, though 1,500 shirts will still be printed, courtesy of Coast Capital Savings.

Though ThorntonJoe doesn’t expect the numbers to be much higher than last year’s, she isn’t too concerned with setting new records.

“As much as we love friendly competition, we’re happy just to see people check it out,” she said.

The living flag will begin assembling at 12:30 p.m. and be finished by 2 p.m.

Though born in St. John’s, NL, Cooper relocated to B.C. at the age of 13 in 1945, and had a career in radio.

Cooper has served on the boards of several charitable organizations, both local and national, including the David Foster Foundation and the Salvation Army.

Olympic medalist Hayley Wickenheiser to play charity game in Esquimalt

One of the biggest names in women’s hockey, four-time gold medalist Hayley Wickenheiser, will be hitting the road for a charity street hockey game in Esquimalt.

Hosted by Country Grocer as part of its Islanders for Islanders summer campaign, the game will take place on July 1 in the rear parking lot of the Archie Browning Sport Centre from 4 to 6 p.m., following two games in Nanaimo and Cobble Hill.

Wickenheiser will be available for photos and autographs at the event, which will feature, along with street hockey, a barbecue and music.

The event is by donation, with proceeds going to Macaulay School.

The game marks Wickenheiser’s first visit to the Island since 2010, when she played in a lead-up game for the 2010 Winter Olympic Games against the U.S. “I’m really excited to come out to the Island again,” Wickenheiser said. “It’s always fun to hear the stories and just see the kids. They always remind you of the fun of hockey and why we all started playing.”

Wickenheiser began her professional hockey career at the age of 15, when she was added to the national women’s team’s roster as a forward for the 1994 World Championship.

Since then, she’s risen to global prominence as part of Canada’s Olympic team, which she has played for since its introduction as a medal sport in 1998, when she helped Team Canada win the first silver medal. Wickenheiser was named alternate captain for the subsequent Olympic Games, and has helped lead Team Canada to the top of the podium four times, most recently in the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympic Games where she was also chosen to be the flag bearer during the opening ceremonies.

The Esquimalt Fire Department was called at 8 a.m. and evacuated two apartment buildings, at 837 and 855 Ellery St., with assistance from the Victoria Police Department and Emergency Social Services. Due to the teachers’ strike, there were no students in Esquimalt High.

She’s also worked with youth through the organizations Spread the Net, KidSport, Classroom Champions, Clean Air Champions, and Because I am a Girl. Her most recent project is the Wickenheiser International Female Hockey Festival, which debuted in 2010 in Burnaby.

City workers save a ton of greenhouse gas

Take a bow City of Victoria, you’re as green as green can be.

During the National Commuter Challenge, which ran June 2 to 6, a team of city staffers left their own cars at home and biked, walked, took transit or carpooled in to work.

As a result of these sustainable transportation choices, more than one tonne of greenhouse gases were prevented.

The City of Victoria won the Most Green-

house Gases Avoided award for the top organization in B.C., outside of Metro Vancouver.

The city also logged the highest participation rate for an organization in Greater Victoria, representing 52 per cent of all Commuter Challenge participants in the Capital Region. The team of 121 staff also placed second at the national level, for Canadian cities with populations under 100,000.

During the week staff logged 7,682 kilometres of travel: more than 3,000 km were made by bike, 2,300 km by transit, 500 km by foot and 1,200 km by carpooling.

Together they burned 120,000 calories and saved 600 litres in fuel.

Where learning at the landfill meets fun!

Do you know where the ‘stuff ’ you throw away goes?

Over 850 residents of the Capital Regional District saw for themselves where their “away” is at last Sunday at the Open House at Hartland landfill and recycling facility.

For the past several years, Hartland Happening, a semi-annual open house, has offered a behind-the-scenes look at the region’s award-winning, multipurpose facility. This year’s Hartland Happening welcomed visitors from 10:30 am until 2 pm on Sunday, June 22.

Activities included a free shuttle to the event from Camosun College, guided tours, interactive exhibits, a giant sandbox, face painting and a monster machine area. Mr. Tube Steak was on hand to barbecue hot dogs and veggie dogs that were free to event guests.

Cash and non-perishable food items were collected for local charities.

Hartland receives garbage from across the region, processing more than 450 tonnes per day.

“I’ve lived twenty minutes away from the landfill most of my life and I’ve never given much thought to where it ends up. Knowing that so much effort goes in to making it a safe and sustainable site makes me proud of living in the capital region,” explains a Saanich resident.

The cries of the seagulls overhead were joined by chanting and the swish of cedar boughs during a series of ceremonies held Tuesday afternoon to bless the third phase of native murals attached to the Unity Wall at the Ogden Point breakwater.

Linda Modeste and daughter-in-law Marilyn Olsen conducted the traditional blessing on the breakwater while at the same time on shore, Mary Anne Thomas and Elmer George were blessing the interpretive panels for the murals.

The phase three murals illustrate the significance and signing of the Douglas Treaties, founding of Victoria and the establishment of Esquimalt. The art examines the interactions between First Nations and settlers

She told TITANIUM theTENTS crowd telling them how the project had brought back her passion for art, a passion she’d felt she lost due to other circumstances in her life.

Dick also said she hoped that people viewing the murals would ask questions about the images, queries that would lead to understanding about the events and issues depicted.

Skin reaction a call for education

Hogweed, cow parsnip have major differences Don Descoteau News staff

Two boys who developed a skin reaction from a plant species they were clearing near their school earlier this month can feel lucky it wasn’t giant hogweed.

The plants in question, which had grown in a Garry oak meadow, turned out to be cow parsnip, or Heracleum maximum. It’s a native species and member of the carrot family that has mild photoreactive properties, meaning its secretions can cause minor irritation or blistering in people with more sensitive skin.

Cow parsnip, although generally much smaller and featuring different physical characteristics, resembles giant hogweed. That invasive species contains a highly toxic sap on its leaves and stem hairs which can cause hypersensitivity to the sun if contacted on the skin.

Both have umbrella-like clusters of white flowers at the end of long stems, but the leaves are different and hogweed can grow to five or six metres high, compare to a maximum of about two metres for cow parsnip.

I am nominating Hardeep on behalf of a BC Ferries customer who just called to compliment him for going out of his way to help her. The customer was travelling to her doctor’s appointment for her chemotherapy treatment. She had been quite ill with pneumonia, and fell asleep in her vehicle with the lights left on while waiting for the ferry. Her car battery ran low and she required a boost. Hardeep immediately looked after this and continued to check on her while she was onboard to make sure she was alright. The customer said he was deserving of “5 stars”.

“I think the message here is that not all plants are created equal,” she said. “It’s important, as part of environmental education and to know for yourself, about certain types of plants.”

Private property owners are responsible for taking care of their own land, McElroy said.

On public land, the various municipal and regional jurisdictions, working with Coastal ISC contractors, have combined to do a good job of controlling hogweed in the region, she said.

While her group fields many calls at this time of year from people either reporting hogweed or asking questions about what they might have Parmar discovered, most often the plant in question is cow parsnip or one of several similar looking native plants.

She said one of their subcontractors visited the school and treated the plants with a herbicide, a rare move given that cow parsnip is native, but one taken due to the reaction it caused.

Final preparations are underway for Victoria’s most attended festival of the year when dozens of street performers wow tens of thousands of onlookers in downtown Victoria.

The 10-day Victoria International Buskers Festival takes over Government Street, Bastion Square, Ship Point and – new this year – the lower Wharf Street parking lot and the Royal B.C. Museum grounds to showcase jugglers, acrobats, musicians and francophone culture starting July 18.

“People are usually surprised when I tell

them there’s around 400 hours of programming that goes into this, when you consider all the stages and busker stops,” said John Vickers, executive director of the festival.

Buskers include magicians, acrobats, jugglers, flame throwers, musicians and actors, as well as headlining all-stars like Australia-based fire troupe Flame Oz, five-time Guinness world record holder Victor Rubilar (Argentina) and hula hoop queen Becky Hoops (Montreal).

“We feel we had around 200,000 attendees last year,” Vickers said. “Deuce Days was here, and that helped, but it just seemed full-

on non-stop for 10 days. I think this year if we can hold our own as good as last year, we’ll be ecstatic.”

Vickers said the festival is a collaboration between tourism partners, as the Hotel Association of Greater Victoria provides more than 200 room nights at no charge to house buskers each year.

“We do a lot of surveys with audiences and last year, over 60 per cent of U.S. residents said they’d come

back this year. That’s a great sign,” he said.

Capping off the festival is an all-stars performance on the lawns of the Fairmont Empress Hotel, July 27 at 5 p.m.

Vickers teased it as an hour and a half extravaganza of favourite performers from years past and present.

It’s all about the money Very few parents would have expected last fall that their children’s school year would be over by just the second week of June.

Yet that’s the case, as negotiations between the B.C. Public School Employers’ Association and the B.C. Teachers have hit a stalemate, and classes likely won’t return until fall.

The two sides remain far apart on wages, benefits and classroom issues.

BCPSEA’s latest offer includes a $1,200 signing bonus for an agreement by the end of the school year, and a series of wage increases up to May 2019 that includes “economic stability dividend” amounts depending on B.C.’s economic performance.

The BCTF wants a $5,000 signing bonus followed by increases of 3.5 per cent in the first year and 1.5 per cent in each of the next three years, for a total raise of eight per cent plus compounding, which brings it closer to 12 per cent – double what any other public service union has accepted this year.

As the BCTF and some members of the public maintain, “it’s not all about money,” and in some respects, that’s true.

The BCTF also wants reduction in class sizes and changes to composition, with more special needs support.

The harsh reality is in the costs.

The BCPSEA has calculated the current teachers’ wages and benefits demands to be worth $211 million in year five. Expanded preparation time for teachers would add another $90-million plus.

And the price tag on the union’s position on class size and composition? The BCPSEA puts that at $1.67 billion – a 30-plus per cent increase on the entire B.C. annual education budget of about $5 billion.

Ultimately, it does become all about the money.

Integrity starts at the top Re: Year-end strike is unethical (Our View, June 18) The year end strike is not unethical.

The teachers, parents and students wouldn’t be in this predicament if years ago the government had provided the teachers the support they have always asked for and need.

I am a parent of a child with learning disabilities. If you have never spent time volunteering in a classroom then you really have no idea the struggles teachers have to teach the curriculum and trying to meet each child’ s learning needs.

When our child was in elementary the biggest problem was the large class size and the number of children with disruptive behaviours that continually interrupted the learning for all children in the class.

These distractions took away time for individual attention each child needs to meet their education rights. The teachers need assistants to help in class and provide the help to that struggling child or they will fall through the cracks.

Many children go undiagnosed as ours was until Grade 5. We placed him in middle school early and had him diagnosed to find out his strengths and weakness.

It is through this testing that an individual education plan was made.

My point is that each class has five to six students with IEPs. My question is who does the teacher teach: the student with the learning disability, the middle students or those students who are extremely gifted scholastically? If they don’t have the support then all the students lose out one way or the other.

Teachers do the best they can with what they have but they are taxed emotionally, physically and psychologically.

At the beginning of each school year, teachers are given a number of files of IEP’s. Teachers work hard to meet the needs of these challenged students and I am sure there are a few teachers who are overwhelmed by the numbers and don’t know where to begin because there isn’t the support they need.

Our son was fortunate to have had a few incredible teachers while at Vic High who understood his struggles and took him under their wings.

Our son graduated with honours from Vic High due the dedication of the hard working teachers that touched his life.

If the government provided extra classroom support, reduced the class size and paid them for all the extra curricular activities and support they provide our students, we wouldn’t be in this situation in the first place.

But don’t forget that when Christy Clark got in for a second term she was going to give her caucus a raise. Shouldn’t the teachers get the raise first as they have worked for the government longer?

If anything thing is unethical, how ethical is it for the government in 2002 to slash millions from the public school budget? Is it ethical to deny special needs students the support they need? How ethical is it to ignore court rulings? How ethical is it to force the teachers to strike as they did in the last rounds of negiotations?

Not all happy with happy hour Pub operators told must charge minimum price The B.C. government has begun allowing “happy hour” discounts for alcoholic drinks, imposing minimum drink prices that force some outlets to raise their prices.

Effective last week, the minimum price for draft beer or cider in B.C. is 25 cents per fluid ounce, which puts a 12-ounce sleeve at $3, a 20-ounce pint at $5 and a 60-ounce jug at $15.

Using a one-ounce minimum, the lowest permitted price for any

alcoholic drink is $3.

The release of the regulations was greeted with protests from some pubs that were offering drink specials below that price.

The regulations also give licensed restaurants the ability to serve drinks without a food order, although their licence still requires them to offer a full food menu. The B.C. government’s liquor policy review also levels the field between pubs and restaurants by allowing families with children into pubs at mealtimes.

The B.C. Restaurant and Foodservices Association issued a statement reminding its members that the new rules also

LETTERS Assessments need fixing Re: Property tax bump hard to swallow (Letters, June 18) I feel the writer’s pain. I too live in Victoria West, and my property tax climbed 9.8 per cent this year.

Of some two dozen houses sold in Vic West in 2013, four were sold for an average 22 per cent more than their assessments.

Apparently those four had been assessed too low; I should like to have seen their assessments lifted to their sale prices and the rest of us left alone.

Under standard assessment methodology, however, the four exceptionals inflated the average market value of the two dozen sold, and thus the assessments of all the houses in Vic West.

That is all right to a point, but I can’t afford to see it recur.

When buyers pay more than assessed value, it usually means there is a suite or extension the assessors didn’t know about, or that the property has been adapted for a business use.

My concern is that the city, perhaps in a bid to create more rental housing and encourage small business, has become too lax with bylaw enforcement.

This is how good intentions can yield bad results, at the expense of neighbourhoods like Vic West which are diverse, tolerant, and

not so likely to push back.

An antidote is to voluntarily disclose to B.C. Assessment the income-producing uses of our homes, so that they can make assessments that jibe with market value.

hy is heart attack the number one killer in this country? Ninety-nine percent of doctors say it’s due to atherosclerosis (hardening of arteries) and that cholesterol lowering drugs are the primary way to treat it. But I suggest cardiologists have closed minds and are ignoring facts that could save thousands of North Americans from coronary attack.

Vitamin C is required to manufacture healthy collagen, the glue that holds coronary cells together, just like mortar is needed for bricks. Lysine, like steel rods in cement, makes collagen stronger. Two-time Nobel Prize winner, Dr. Linus Pauling reported twenty-five years ago it takes a mere 10 milligrams to prevent scurvy, but several thousand to prevent heart attack.

Williams Stehbens, Professor of Anatomy at Wellington University in New Zealand, proved Pauling was right. Stebhens’ research showed that coronary arteries closest to the heart are under the greatest pressure. This causes collagen to fracture resulting in the formation of a blood clot and death.

I also believed the research of Pauling and Stehbens irrefutable. Now, the work of Dr. Bush has convinced me my decision was prudent.

But to take large doses of vitamin C and lysine requires swallowing many pills daily. It’s a tall order for those who dislike swallowing one pill. So for several years I’ve been trying to find a company that would manufacture a combination of vitamin C and lysine powder. Even the untrained eye can see kimonos are great works of art, but to the trained eye, each kimono tells a story.

This summer, two exhibitions at the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria will showcase dozens of historical kimonos and tell their stories.

From Geisha to Diva: The Kimonos of Ichimaru returns to Victoria after travelling North America for more than a decade, most recently at the Textile Museum of Canada.

This extremely rare and prized collection, which was donated to the AGGV, once belonged to Ichimaru (1906-1997) one of the most famous geishas of the 20th century.

Ichimaru’s story, which includes becoming a recording artist in the 1930s, is presented through her magnificent kimonos and personal belongings. Combining her experience as a geisha with an extraordinary talent as a vocalist and musician, she became a unique figure in the social history of modern Japan.

From Geisha to Diva opens alongside Kimono: the Japanese Culture in its Art Form on June 27 and both exhibitions run through Oct. 19.

“The details and features that characterize kimono culture are not

well known in the Western world,” says Kimono guest curator Hitomi Harama.

“To understand the true beauty of the kimono, knowledge of its unwritten code is essential.”

The sleeve length, material, colours and design, all speak to whether the person who wore it was married or single, their age, gender, class, as well as what season the kimono was for.

Kimono showcases codes, artistic forms and complexities of kimono culture, along with the etiquette of kimono attire for different seasons and occasions.

“The exhibition will include both my family’s and local Victoria resident’s collections,” says Harama, whose family has operated Owmiya, a high-end kimono business for more than 85 years. “All of my family’s collections have been shipped from Japan.”

Kimono also contains a digital component to display valuable Kimono examples physically unavailable for display at this time.

Highlanders prepare for friendlies Local Dining Drop by WING’S against Glasgow and Edmonton BAYJAMES INN the

Victoria Highlanders FC have announced a second major exhibition match.

The Highlanders will play against the North American Soccer League’s FC Edmonton on July 2 at 6 p.m.

The announcement comes on the heels of the recently announced international friendly against Scottish championship side Glasgow Rangers FC on July 21.

Both matches are taking place at the University of Victoria’s Centennial Stadium to accommodate an increased attendance.

Tickets for the match are available online atselectyourtickets.ca or over the phone by calling 250-220-7777.

Tickets for the FC Edmonton match are general admission and will be priced at $20 for adults and $10 for youth 12 and under. Group rates will be available through the Highlanders head office at 250-5908432.

HarbourCats tops in attendance Baseball club averaging 1,457 fans per game Victoria fans love their HarbourCats and baseball.

Going into last Monday’s home game against the Bend Elks, the Victoria HarbourCats led the West Coast League in average attendance with 1,457 per game (six home games).

All WCL regular season home games so far have been weeknight games, as the team’s schedule is heavy on weekend games, and five afternoon games to come, when the schedule moves to July and August.

“We think that number can grow with the way

our schedule is shaped in the last half of the season,” said general manager Jim Swanson.

“We believe that with this market, with the support of the City of Victoria and the facility we play in, and with hard work and creativity in our marketing efforts, it’s possible for our support to reach 2,000 or more per game on average.”

The HarbourCats have 18 home games remaining, and the season-high crowd to date was a Tuesday, the 3,038 on opening night.

The second highest attendance in the league belongs to the Medford Rogues at 1,426 per game, while the Kitsap BlueJackets hold the worst attendance at 426 per game.

They are Miata mates for life ‘‘ Despite the relatively early call time, a group of almost 100 Mazda Miata/MX-5 drivers/passengers gathers for the morning’s meeting.

The weather is looking favourable even though the a.m. envelops the crowd with its chilliness. It’s not raining though. That’s a good sign.

Tour organizer and former Trillium Miata Club president, Gary Svoboda, talks about the day’s journey, addresses some basic housekeeping rules, makes some jokes and engages in witty banter with a group of excited Miata enthusiasts.

Everyone is ready to hit the roads of Vermont in their tiny, drop top, two-doors. Everything from first generations Miatas, to the latest and greatest rear-wheel drive roadsters line the gravel parking lot of our home base, also known as the Stowehof Inn. Stowe, VT’s claim to fame is as a ski destination. Currently, its claim to fame is the 46 Mazdas that drove in from Ontario and are congregating for their annual tour.

Each May long weekend, a group of club members look forward to the event. It’s been going for over 20 years and hasn’t disappointed. The crowd gets rowdier by the minute so go-time is just around the corner.

The meeting wraps up; we branch into our respective groups and fire up the engines.

As honorary members for the event, my co-pilot – aka my mother

Zsuzsanna Straub – and I get behind the wheel of our MX-5. Within moments, we’re topless. The car. Not us!

We’re comfortably nestled in the bosom of the pack.

Our job is to enjoy ourselves, as well as give the MX-5 a little bit of room to romp free.

It’s hard not to smile on the undulating roads of Vermont, which are lined with trees, houses, fields and topped off with a bovine scent!

Then there is what is called “The Notch.” A mountain road where emaciated limbs of indigenous trees

look like they’re reaching out and trying to touch the cars. Boulders are scattered and the path is paved around it. The intermittent obstacles would likely be the outcome of two Greek gods having a rock fight. You would have to have superhuman strength to move them.

The sinuous and slender road is a hoot to drive through especially with no one in front of you. The occasional crackling on the CB radios frequently is overpowered by instructions from the leader.

Another owner decided to turn his conventional doors into ones that open up not out.

At breakfast, lunch and dinner, they regale each other with stories of other events they’ve been on. Outbursts of laughter perk up the ears of bystanders; making them wish they were at that table reliving the memories. The camaraderie of those young and young at heart is undisputable.

Liz was one of the first members of the Trillium Miata Club. She expected to join a group of Miata owners and drive with them on weekends.

Liz says she “didn’t expect to make friends for 25 years” but she did.

It is a remarkable plug-in hybrid super

sports car that can reach a top speed of 344 km/h, sprint from zero to 100km/h in 2.5 seconds, and yet at 72 g/km (70 g/km with the lightweight Weissach Package) produces so little CO2 that it is exempt from the London Congestion Charge.

It has a total power output of 887 hp and holds the current lap record for a production car at the famous Nürburgring race circuit of just 6 minutes 57 seconds.

Despite all that performance, its plug-in hybrid technology means a low fuel consumption of 3.0 L/100kms is possible.

Canada Day is a time for celebration; a day to show our national pride.

To celebrate Canada’s 147th birthday on Tuesday (July 1), the City of Victoria has announced a huge line up of family-friendly events, multicultural programming and fireworks along Victoria’s Inner Harbour.

“We are excited to be offering an expanded range of family-friendly activities and multicultural performances this year,” said Charlayne Thornton-Joe, City of Victoria councillor and Canada Day Organizer.

“We invite the community to come downtown to join us in celebrating the multicultural diversity that makes up Canada.”

The Canada Day Kid’s Zone will return to Belleville Street with many interactive activities. Award-winning children’s entertainer Charlotte Diamond will take centre stage Tuesday afternoon.

The ever-popular Living Flag will return to the B.C. legislature lawns and 1,500 red and white T-shirts will be available.

Main stage highlights on July 1 will transform the B.C. legislature lawns into a one-of-a-kind concert. Headlining this year will be Victoria-based, three-piece folk rock and reggae

Canada a special place for immigrant Daniel Palmer News staff

When Keri Greenidge arrived in Victoria on a rainy, cool evening in July 2007, she was a little puzzled by the weather.

The brochures she’d browsed as a curious student from Barbados showed sunny afternoons along the Inner Harbour and at the University of Victoria campus, with lush flowers overflowing from countless hanging baskets.

“It was just a cold week, but the weather was such a shock,” says Greenidge, who laughs when she looks back on her first few months in Canada. “I definitely had to learn how to dress with layers.”

Seven years later, Greenidge is married and studying to become a Canadian citizen.

She’s well-suited for the task as a citizenship training program co-ordinator at the Victoria Immigrant and Refugee Centre Society.

Helping newcomers prepare for citizenship, that’s really opened up my eyes to feel more at home. I’m able to connect with the things I see in my day-to-day, and I feel like I understand at the local, provincial and national level. Things don’t feel fuzzy anymore. I feel more of the country because I

understand and can connect with the history,” she says.

Greenidge most misses the unreserved nature of Barbados residents, the endless beaches and, most acutely, the food.

“We make macaroni pie. It’s like mac and cheese but a little bit more elaborative,” she says enthusiastically. “And then there’s our national dish, cou-cou and flying fish. The best way is to create it as a sauce. It’s amazing.”

This year, Greenidge will spend Canada Day as she usually does at Government House, where some of her clients and friends will take the oath of citizenship in the company of Lieut.-Gov. Judith Guichon and officials from Citizenship and Immigration Canada.

Later in the evening, she’ll cycle down the Galloping Goose trail to watch the fireworks near the Johnson Street Bridge before heading home with her husband.

“Initially, I was always thinking about home and how beautiful it was, and then I went home once at Christmas, and I missed Victoria and it was very strange to have that dawn on me,” she says. “I kept feeling like it was temporary, but now I want to make it really feel like a home.” dpalmer@vicnews.com

Victoria’s Hindu Temple throws open its doors this weekend for the fifth Culture and Arts Festival of India and everyone is invited.

Cultural co-ordinator and temple secretary Sri Ganti says they hope to welcome hundreds of people from across Greater Victoria to share in Indian music, movies, dance, history, food and much more.

“It’s very festive,” Ganti says.

“Many people have been to India and they find it wonderful to come here and be a part of the celebration.”

For 15 to 20 minutes on the hour during the festival, Ganti says dancers will perform classic, folk and Bollywood style on stage. Outside the temple, there will be tents featuring cooking demonstrations, Henna tattooing, clothing and more. There is a lunch menu as well.

Ganti said the temple is home to 150 families throughout Greater Victoria – adding they are passionate about their heritage.

“It’s a small community, but it’s growing.”

The Culture and Arts Festival of India is June 28 and 29 at the Victoria Hindu Temple on Cultra Avenue in Central Saanich.

The celebration starts at 11 a.m. both days and lasts until 6 p.m.

Applicants must successfully complete the council’s education requirements specific to careers in real estate sales, rental property management services or strata management services, offered through the University of British Columbia Real Estate Division.

As a blended learning course, students can register at any time, but the course must be completed within one year.

Those with prior real estate education or experience may receive an exemption from course work.

Applicants must be at least 19 years old, although the course and examination may be completed earlier; individuals have up to one year from passing the exam to apply for licensing.

Real estate-related postsecondary programs are also available at the University of British Columbia and the B.C. Institute of Technology.

Time was, a Realtor’s job was to identify potential homes for clients then guide them through the myriad legal details surrounding the buying and selling of property.

Those roles are still there, but technology and clients’ expectations have brought changes that have reshaped the Realtor’s career.

“The role of the Realtor has changed, especially in the last 10 or 15 years,” says Tim Ayres, president of the Victoria Real Estate Board.

He notes that while much of the Realtor’s job had been information gathering for home shoppers, the Internet now allows people to do much of that legwork themselves.

Today, a Realtor’s value is not only in how well-versed they are on the legal ins and outs of home buying and selling, but also in their marketing skills and ability to stay wellinformed about the community in which they’re selling. Examples are trends in the marketplace, demographics, schools, transportation issues, and development plans.

Fortunately, Greater Victoria is small enough that Realtors can familiarize themselves quite easily with neighbourhoods from Sooke to Sidney. But Ayres suggests Realtors often find success in focusing on a particular part of the region.

This diverse knowledge base is all the more important when working with clients from outside the region, such as those relocating with the military or RCMP, or retirees seeking the promise of mild winters.

Getting into the real estate market involves dedication and hard work, not unlike other professions. the Realtor’s role, it’s also dramatically changed the way they do business. Realtors selling a property should be savvy to today’s technology, using video, photography and floor plans to provide prospective buyers with a full picture of a property, for example.

“An online presence is key,” Ayres says. “Make sure what you’re doing (to market a property) is what people want to see.”

At the same time, there’s a lot to be said for a Realtor’s ability to connect with clients on a personal level.

Patrick Skillings has been a Realtor for 30 years, and believes in the time-honoured approach of oneon-one contact with clients, and of being genuinely interested in those he meets – as people, not only the means to a potential sale, he says.

from first generations Miatas, to the latest and greatest rearwheel drive roadsters line the gravel parking lot of our home base, also known as the Stowehof Inn. Stowe, VT’s claim to fame is as a ski destination. Currently, its claim to fame is the 46 Mazdas that drove in from Ontario and are congregating for their annual tour.

Each May long weekend, a group of club members look forward to the event. It’s been going for over 20 years and hasn’t disappointed. The crowd gets rowdier by the minute so go-time is just around the corner.

The meeting wraps up; we branch into our respective groups and fire up the engines.

As honorary members for the event, my co-pilot – aka my mother Zsuzsanna Straub – and I get behind the wheel of our MX-5. Within moments, we’re topless. The car. Not us!

Seven vehicles comprise a group, including a leader and a sweeper. We’re comfortably nestled in the bosom of the pack.

Our job is to enjoy ourselves, as well as give the MX-5 a little bit of room to romp free.

It’s hard not to smile on the

undulating roads of Vermont, which are lined with trees, houses, fields and topped off with a bovine scent!

Then there is what is called “The Notch.” A mountain road where emaciated limbs of indigenous trees look like they’re reaching out and trying to touch the cars. Boulders are scattered and the path is paved around it. The intermittent obstacles would likely be the outcome of two Greek gods having a rock fight. You would have to have superhuman strength to move them.

The sinuous and slender road is a hoot to drive through especially with no one in front of you. The occasional crackling on the CB radios frequently is overpowered by instructions from the leader.

Like a mother duck summoning her young, we followed in order. We stuck together and took in some breathtaking scenery of New England. Scenery aside, what was the most interesting to breathe in was the enthusiasm and energy of the Miata owners.

Miata earrings dangle from her ears as she professes her love of her emerald beauty.

Another owner decided to turn his conventional doors into ones that open up not out.

At breakfast, lunch and dinner, they regale each other with stories of other events they’ve been on. Outbursts of laughter perk up the ears of bystanders; making them wish they were at that table reliving the mem-

ories. The camaraderie of those young and young at heart is undisputable.

Regardless of background, profession, or preference in exterior colour, few vehicles in the world bring people together as strongly as Mazda’s MX-5.

Liz was one of the first members of the Trillium Miata Club.

She expected to join a group of Miata owners and drive with them on weekends. Liz says she “didn’t expect to make friends for 25 years” but she did.

And a stuff structure is what is needed if you want to make a supercar. The convertible has a 495hp but the coupe is fitted with a 550hp version of the supercharged V8 because the body and chassis has the strength to accommodate such a powerful engine.

Inside Almost every review of the convertible commented on the raspy exhaust note from either the supercharged 3.0L V6 or V8 engines. The S and R models of the coupe also get a sports exhaust that can be made louder or quieter with the press of a button, but the fixed roof of the coupe muted the impact compared to the convertible.

On the road to the track event, I drove the supercharged 380hp S model fitted with superb sports seats and leather everywhere that matters, like the doors and dash. The back cargo area is surprisingly big and capable of accommodating two sets of golf clubs. Jaguar has done a superb job of finishing the hatch area with a cover that helps separate the cabin from the trunk area.

As the trim levels increase in price the added features are not so much about additional luxury items, rather more performance features. As each trim gets more power, there are more aids to help get all that power down to the ground.

The S trim gets performance brakes and a mechanical limited slip differential but the R model adds torque vectoring to help steer the car through the corners and an electronic active differential to apply power more precisely to the rear wheels when the driver asks.

Ceramic brakes are also an option on the R trim. My instructor at Willow Springs was Davey Jones, who has two Rolex Daytona watches to show for his wins at the 24-hours of Daytona. The R on the track is nothing short of amazing.

With such low-end grunt from the supercharged 5.0L V8 engine and endless horsepower, the all-aluminum F-Type just danced in every situation. Willow Springs is a technical track but after a half dozen laps, the powerful cat roared with pleasure in every turn. In performance mode the electronic aids are more forgiving allowing the car to rotate in the corners when pushed hard, the steering is very sharp and the driver can actually get the power down with confidence.

Verdict The Jaguar F-Type Coupe is an expensive machine but in the supercar world is a relative bargain. If you are in the market for a Porsche or other high-end coupe, this Jaguar, especially the R version is a car that demands attention when you look at it and gets respect when you drive it. zack.spencer@drivewaybc.ca

Eye-catching steel at collector car nirvana 1934 Chrysler Airflow

Keith Morgan You didn’t need a bidder’s paddle to enjoy the excitement of the second annual Vancouver Collector Car Show & Auction.

More than 650 collector and classic autos descended upon the PNE Fairgrounds this past weekend and another 150 went on the block, many surpassing their reserve bid limits.

Speed TV’s Steve Magnante was on hand to move the auction along but the cars were the true stars.

Yours truly focussed on the beauties that were for sale, as many of the gems displayed by the car clubs represented at the show will undoubtedly show up in Driveway over the summer season of show and shines.
