Report cards a casualty of ongoing strike By Tom Fletcher With schools behind picket lines for a second week and little hope of a quick settlement, school districts are starting to notify parents that yearend report cards won’t be produced. Surrey school district superintendent Jordan Tinney posted a notice to parents that even shortened report cards that were planned at the beginning of the B.C. Teachers’ Federation strike won’t be possible. “The information that we need to produce report cards is in

Effective this week, the minimum price for draft beer or cider in B.C. is 25 cents per fluid ounce, which puts a 12-ounce sleeve at $3, a 20-ounce pint at $5 and a 60-ounce jug at $15. Using a oneounce minimum, the lowest permitted price for any alcoholic drink is $3. The release of the

Gaiptman wrote. School districts are running buses this week to get Grade 10-12 students to their provincial exams, which have been designated an essential service by the B.C. Labour Relations Board. Tinney added that summer school plans are looking “very tenuous” in Surrey, and some districts have already canceled their summer instruction. Education Minister Peter Fassbender has said the partial lockout imposed on teachers will be lifted after yearend administrative days so it does not interfere with summer school programs.

regulations Friday was greeted with protests from some pubs that were offering drink specials below that price. The regulations also give licensed restaurants the ability to serve drinks without a food order, although their licence still requires them to offer a full food menu. The B.C. government’s liquor policy review also levels the field between pubs and restaurants by allowing families with children into pubs at mealtimes. The B.C. Restaurant and Foodservices Association issued a statement reminding its members that the new rules also allow customers to carry a drink from a lounge to an adjoining restaurant. Licensees are also allowed to transfer small amounts of stock from one to the other if they run out of a particular product. In a policy directive to industry associations, local governments and police agencies, the government’s Liquor Control and Licensing Branch says the lower price may be applied selectively for “ladies night” specials or “team night” for players in uniform. Minimum prices do not apply to catered events, or special occasion licences.

High wire work just completed by BC Hydro Submitted BC Hydro power line technicians from Cranbrook recently completed a significant maintenance project on a 500 kilovolt line in the West Kootenay region. The specialized crew used helicopters to help install more than 1,800 spacer dampers and 250 arcing horns on the high voltage towers and wires. On high voltage power lines, spacer dampers hold the individual bundled wires apart. The new spacer dampers have high grade rubber to absorb vibration, wind and the impact of inclement weather. It is anticipated they will extend the lifespan of the lines by 70 years. New arcing horns were also installed as part of this project. Arcing horns protect

the insulators from lightning damage, which are designed to prevent insulator damage and reduce maintenance costs. To complete the work, power line technicians climbed the towers or landed on the top of the towers using a helicopter, and lowered themselves into buggies. The buggies were hung on the wires and moved along the line using specialized gas powered motorized pullers. Tools and materials were transported to the crews via helicopters. The work is part of an ongoing provincial project. BC Hydro will replace thousands space dampers and arcing horns across the province this year. This particular work was completed this month.

1. Food First, Flowers Second. Settling in the New World, early European settlers quickly learned from their First Nations neighbours how to grow the most important food staples, including corn, beans and squash. Growing your own food was a matter of survival and only when this need was met, people started ornamental gardens, both privately and in public spaces. 2. Showing off Diversity. Across Canada, public botanic gardens showcase the many varieties of plants that can successfully be grown in our country. In the West, the most popular sites include Butchart Gardens in Victoria - the garden was declared a National Historic Site in 2004 - as well as University of British Columbia Botanical Garden in Vancouver and Devonian Botanical Garden just outside of Edmonton. 3. From Farm to Garden. Part of Agriculture Canada’s historic Central Experimental Farm in Ottawa is the Dominion Arboretum. The garden was started in 1889 and covers 26 hectares. Its ornamental gardens include peony and lilac collections and a unique microclimate in the garden allows even magnolias and azaleas to flourish. 4. A Day to Celebrate Gardens. The Friday before Father’s Day, June 15, marked the second annual National Garden Day in Canada. With activities across the country, groups and individuals celebrate the importance of public and private gardens. National Garden Day is an initiative by the Canadian Garden Council which has also initiated Canada’s Garden Route, a self-guided , cross-country tour of notable gardens. 5. Roses of the Prairies. Morden, Manitoba should be a stop on any Canadian garden tour. It is at the Morden Experimental Farm - now called the Morden Research Station - that hundreds of trees, plants and seeds suited to harsh Prairie conditions were developed. This includes several varieties of roses, such as the ‘Parkland’ series with its popular ‘Morden Sunrise’ and - most recently - the ‘Canadian Artist’ series. 6. Blueberry of the Prairie. The honeyberry is a more recent addition to Canadian gardens. This fruit-bearing shrub is a member of the honeysuckle family and native to Siberia. Research at the University of Saskatchewan has developed a plant that is exceptionally winter hardy and offers an abundance of berries early in the season. 7. Provincial Flower Power. The beauty and diversity of flowers growing in Canada is recognized by the official flowers of Provinces and Territories. British Columbia’s official flower since 1956 is the Pacific Dogwood. These big, white flowers bloom on tall trees in the Coastal region in April and May. It is not hardy in the Kootenays. However, Alberta’s official flower, the Wild Rose, can be found here. 8. Land of the Maple Leaf. Recognized around the world, the maple leaf is Canada’s national symbol. Maple Trees impress with their showiness in the fall, but also with their speed of growth. From the ‘Autumn Blaze’ maple to its columnar cousins, the ‘Red Rocket’ as well as ‘Prairie Splendor’, there is a little piece of Canadiana for every yard. 9. Close to Home. When looking for the best plants to grow successfully in your garden, you often do not have to look far. Native plants are a great choice and when planted in the right spot, they can be low maintenance, help save water, provide food and shelter for wildlife and enhance local biodiversity. Some of the plants you will find in the woods that will likely also do well in your yard include spireas and potentillas, oregon grape, yarrow, wild strawberries and many more. 10. Ask the Experts. If you are looking for Canadian gardening advice, there are some well-known names to look for. West Coast gardener Brian Minter has been answering gardening questions on radio and television shows since the 1970s, and he is the author of numerous gardening columns and books. The late Lois Hole from Alberta has penned a series of books about her ‘Favourites’ and her son Jim is following in her footsteps. The many local garden clubs and your favourite greenhouse are your best sources for regional growing tips.

A brief history of teachers’ demands in British Columbia B.C. Views By Tom Fletcher

A few things have changed since the last all-out teacher strike in B.C. That was just two years ago, when the B.C. Teachers’ Federation was coming off its second-ever voluntary agreement with a 16% raise over five years and what the union termed an “enhanced” signing bonus of $4,000. Even with special teacheronly top-ups, BCTF members almost rejected the last of the government’s big-spending pre-Olympic labour deals signed in 2006. By 2012, outraged teachers were back on

the legislature lawn, howling for another 16%, with backup vocals provided as usual by HEU, CUPE, BCGEU and other public sector unions that settled for less. Teachers had just sailed through a crippling global recession with a series of raises, but were oblivious to all that. Last week the protest venue switched to Vancouver, where both the crowd and the demands looked a bit thinner. The signing bonus target is up to $5,000, but the raise is a mere 8% over five years (compounded, for those who passed math), plus another huge basket of cash disguised as ben-

efit improvements and so forth. Government negotiators put their total compensation demand at 14.5%. One obvious dodge: they want the bottom two steps of the teacher salary grid dropped. That’s simply a raise for entry-level teachers. Admittedly those are rare creatures these days with shrinking enrolment and ironclad seniority rules that allow retired teachers to monopolize substitute work. Something else that’s changed since 2012 is that the government has granted the BCTF’s wish to bargain directly with the province. The education ministry

executed a takeover of the B.C. Public School Employers’ Association after last year’s election, and installed veteran industrial union negotiator Peter Cameron. He’s backed up by long-time labour specialist Lee Doney, whose task is to keep the teacher deal within Treasury Board limits that have defined all other public sector union settlements. Doney made it clear last week that no mediator is going to come in and “split the baby” as long as the BCTF position is so far beyond the current compensation framework. Despite constant union complaints of low

wages and deteriorating working conditions in B.C. schools, education grads remain lined up around the block hoping to get in. Why is that? For those who have been exposed to life outside school for a while, it’s fairly simple. The job market out here in the real world is tough. And here’s how the real world evaluates a teaching job. Start with 189 working days, each nine hours long as per the accepted definition, and the top-heavy seniority list that places the average teacher salary at around $72,000 a year. That works out to $42.32 an hour,

seems to be just another thinly disguised raise. The BCTF wants a large increase in preparation time for elementary school. There are no duties being added here. For this one item, government negotiators calculate the cost to taxpayers at $86.2 million every year by the fifth year of the BCTF proposal. plus a suite of benefits that most private sector employees can only dream about, starting with three months of prime-time vacation. I am occasionally lectured by teachers that the job goes far beyond five hours in the classroom and an additional four hours a day preparing and marking. They throw out different estimates, variously defined. Alas, it’s a salaried job, and we salaried employees in the real world don’t waste a lot of time counting hours. Horoscope for the Week: June 27, 2014 Contact Michael O’Connor for a Personal Reading • 250-352-6871 sunstarastrology@gmail.com • www.sunstarastrology.com

Tip of the Week: Summer is under way. Looking back we came through the great and in some cases dreaded Cardinal Grand Square. Some were very much affected by it while others did not notice a thing, at least not in their life. But they might have noticed it in the lives of others, if they knew what they were looking for and appreciate the synchronicity factor. People with planets somewhere between 10 and 18 degrees or so of Cardinal Signs will have experienced the direct ‘influence’ of thus of changes in their life. Astrology illustrates that there most certainly is a rhyme and reason, time and season to things. It can be described as an inner intelligence, purpose and plan if you like. Some call it destiny. Although this is quite evident and even measurable and demonstrable, mainstream academia rejects it. Thus so too do‘the masses’. Even the most educated people can be very dogmatic assuming that their perspectives are purely objective. Over the next 10 days or so the Sun will trigger and thereby re-activate the Cardinal Grand Square. So, it will provide another shift or series of synchronistic events producing measurable changes, especially for those with planets at those degrees. In fact this will be true if you have any planets or angles within these degrees but will prove especially potent if they are in Cardinal Signs: Aries, Cancer, Libra and Capricorn. You can prove it for yourself by looking at your own Astrology chart to see if you have planets in Cardinal Signs and if so ask yourself if some major, life changing events have and are now occurred. Stop believing or not, take a scientific approach and put it to the test. Casually relegating the synchronicities to the coincidence dustbin is just that, but don’t call it science or sincerity. Summer has begun and the temperature is rising, and so too is the bar. Aries (Mar 21 – Apr 20) New thoughts, ideas and perceptions have been seeded and have now begun to gestate in your mind. These are directly linked to home and family. At best you feel more confident than ever. Yet there are some challenging bits to contend with as well. These are linked to achieving a new balance and/or quality of fairness in your most intimate relationships. Taurus (Apr 20 – May 21) Just when you might have thought things would slow down, they are actually speeding up! Yet you are challenged to focus more deliberately now, thought the task of tending to a variety of fronts remains. This means that you must continue to work hard and put in the extra time. Call it the final push through the finish line… for the current round anyway. Gemini (May 21 – Jun 21) Creating and/or realizing a new state and quality of abundance and security continues. Inspired expressions of art and beauty will support the first feature of this flow. The other will be achieved by clear and acknowledged expressions of gratitude. Deciphering what makes you special is directly linked to focusing to share your gifts and these will produce more abundance and so on…. Cancer (Jun 21 – Jul 22) You are like a racehorse out of the gates. The only trouble is that you may not be clear about the objective of the race or the best direction to take. Still, you are willing to go big and take leaps and bounds and risks too. Beyond winning, as important as it can be, the main goal is to do what you do well, in fact, better than ever. Leo (Jul 22 – Aug 23) You have taken a plunge into deeper waters. Hardly hot springs, they are cool, even frigid, but probably refreshing as well. There is also the intimidation of not being able to see the bottom. So your challenge is to have faith that you can dive deep, without obstruction, and that you will resurface again. Still, consciously managing your breath will help, a lot. Virgo (Aug 23 – Sep 22) New plans born of deep visions that have suddenly come to light are yours to enjoy now. You may even choose to formulate these into more practical endeavors. Either way, you are about to enter into a very creative cycle. Yet, it will require faith, discipline and intelligence to achieve your objectives. P.S. Go big!

Libra (Sep 22 – Oct 22) A whirl wind of activity continues to keep you busy. This is especially true in your public and professional life. And this week you can expect some very powerful activations. Fortunately you are in an assertive mood. Cultural activities and travel are featured. You want to explore, experience and experiment and your imagination is leading you onward. Scorpio (Oct 22 – Nov 21) Nurturing new visions and philosophies has begun. Some of these may well be linked to inventions. And it may be a process of re-inventing yourself that is at stake. In other respects, you may simply be awed and amazed at the genius of others and of life in general. In any case, you appreciate the intricacies and are focused on the details of the design. Sagittarius (Nov 21 – Dec 21) The next phase of clearing the old to make way for the new has begun. By now this has become the new norm. Still, the next phase has begun and it is a pretty deep one. Now you must purge some old beliefs and self-concepts, but they may also be just old fantasies and illusions. Is there anything you feel attached to, but upon reflection is simply not worth it? Capricorn (Dec 21 – Jan 19) Something new has begun in your life. It is something inside of you, or in your home and family. As exciting as it may be, it may also be the source of some disruption. The status quo will change as a consequence and this has already begun. Now what you need is some instruction so you know what to do and how to do it. Aquarius (Jan 19 – Feb 19) The time has come to make some important adjustments and improvements. These are directly linked to your repertoire of talents. As important as are reason and logic, intuition and imagination must play key roles too. This challenge will compel you to conduct research and investigation. Yet allow room for creative brainstorming as well for best results. Pisces (Feb 19 – Mar 20) You are in the mood to have some fun. You want to play and this includes others. And you feel ambitious and determined as well. Like an enthusiastic child at an amusement park, you want to do it all and you mean business. While strategy, decision making and follow through are implied, avoid thinking too much and just do it.

Cranbrook composting project working with the city’s youth Picture this: an apple core tumbling into a garbage bin. For dedicated composters, this everyday moment turns into a slow-motion trag-

edy, as that apple core could be much more than a waste of space at the landfill - it could be compost gold! The Wildsight Cranbrook

Composts Project has been sharing the joy of composting at local schools and community events to inspire others to compost and to

reduce the amount of waste we send to the landfill. The Wildsight Cranbrook Composts Project was at the Kootenay Children’s Festival and the East Kootenay Regional Science Fair, teaching children not just about composting, but also about sustainable food. Students from all over the Kootenays saw backyard and worm composting examples, and made their own edible compost by layering dried fruit, pretzels, bran flakes, and topping with a gummy worm. “It was wonderful to hear that some schools, such as TM Roberts and Gordon Terrace are already composting or plan to start, and are keen to start and maintain a school garden,” said local project coordinator, Nadine Rake. Each class contributed to building a compost pile with food scraps collected from the school and yard waste. “It was really energizing to talk about compost with that age group. They totally get

the concept of decomposition, and they easily make the connection with waste reduction. I think they are ready to take on the challenge of maintaining a compost system, either at home or at school,” said Wildsight’s Jessica Windle. At Amy Woodland School, students from Kindergarten to Grade

4 took a scientific approach to composting by building a compost pile and then recording changes throughout the composting process. “Students at that age love composting! They were keen to build the pile with food scraps and yard waste and to keep it well stocked,” said Rake, “and they really enjoyed digging through the active pile to see compost in action.” Students even studied their own personal compost jars and kept observation logs of the breakdown process. “It was inspiring to see how many hands went up when I asked the classes ‘Who composts at home?’,” said Rake, “Once you make a habit of composting, you’ll keep doing it. Judging by the positive response so far, I think we’ll see a lot more compost habits developed this summer!” The Cranbrook Composts Project will continue throughout the summer and into the next school year, bringing compost education and fun to as many residents as possible through public workshops, and school presentations. Wildsight is working to bring a Master Composter Workshop to Cranbrook and will also be improving the existing compost system at the Cranbrook Public Produce Garden. To top it all off, they are also compiling a local home composting guide with step-by-step instruction for those who want to start composting or revive an old compost pile out back. “We’d love for people, compost novices and compost experts alike, to get involved in the project,” said Rake. Sparwood seeking Terry Fox run organizer Submitted

“I’m not a dreamer, and I’m not saying this will initiate any kind of definitive answer or cure to cancer, but I believe in miracles. I have to,” the words spoken by a true Canadian hero. Terry Fox had a single dream: a world without cancer. He sought to reach out to every corner of Canada, and beyond, when he embarked on his Marathon of Hope. Terry Fox ran the equivalent of a marathon a day for 143 days straight on one leg. He did this to raise awareness for the need for cancer research funding. When his own cancer spread, Terry was forced to stop running but his journey and his dream to find a cure for cancer lives on. This year marks the 34th annual Terry Fox Run and Sparwood is seeking a motivated, compassionate volunteer Run Organizer to bring Terry’s legacy to the community. The Terry Fox Run has taken place in Sparwood since 1985 and has a long standing tradition in the community. The Run is an opportunity for people of a variety of backgrounds and ages to come together and contribute to the $650 million already raised for cancer research worldwide, in Terry’s name. Participants have the option to be recognized as a corporate team, individual participants, or even as a part of “Terry’s Team” of cancer survivors. Every participant is a special part of the cause, as living proof that cancer

research saves lives. “It would be such a shame for the people of Sparwood to miss out on an opportunity to keep Terry’s legacy

alive as every community no matter how big or small can make a huge impact, just as Terry learned when a small town of 10,000 people raised over $10,000”, says Donna White, Provincial Director for the Terry Fox Foundation British Columbia and Yukon.

Sunshine Houseboats originated on a whim or a dream in 1998. With originally 4 houseboats purchased

We at Sunshine have made our current vision to offer a continually improving houseboat charter experience in addition to our complement of services which include amenities previously not found on or near Lake Koocanusa. We’ve grown from 4 houseboats that only slept 10 people to 15 houseboats that sleep anywhere between 2-22 people. We have a dockside store, The Driftwood where we sell fuel, basic grocery items, fish tackle, fireworks, and ice and confectionary items. This year we’re also serving cheeseburgers, hot dogs, and delicious kiwi pies that are made locally in Cranbrook and famous Happy Cow ice-cream from Fernie. Our staff members are equally excited about this! So much is new this year that we’re very thrilled to share, like

our on-site upholsterer who can tackle any boat project and our inhouse fiber glass professional. Brant also saw a need to bring in better boats and products to the shore and with that we’re now a Mercury dealership which will allow the products you need right here at the lake, especially in emergency situations. We offer sales and service to Stingray boats, Mirrocraft fishing boats and Montego Bay pontoon boats. Inventory has already begun arriving so we welcome everyone to come down and have take a boo! Lost and found art of Victorine Kierstead

Photo submitted

The works of accomplished artist Victorine Kierstead will be at the CDAC gallery in July. Submitted The Cranbrook and District Arts Council

Presents ‘The Lost and Found Art’ of Toronto Artist Victorine Kierstead July 2nd –

www.kootenayadvertiser.com A17 July 12th Having been locked away, hidden for many years, this collection of paintings resurfaced when a Creston resident attended the auction of a storage locker. We all hear of finding a painting in the attic or some far and forgotten corner but imagine finding a storage locker full of boxes of paintings. This is what happened to Tracie Truscott’s mother (Marj) when she attended a sale of the contents of a locker in Creston. In the boxes she purchased, were over one hundred drawings and paintings by Victorine Kierstead. After Tracie approached Cranbrook and District Arts Council with the possibility of an exhibit and sale, we became interested in the history of these paintings. Local genealogist David Humphrey took on the task of tracing the origins of this collection of paintings. It was known that the paintings had belonged to Ron Brown, also known as, ‘The Bead Man of Crawford Bay’. Ron Brown died on February 10, 2006 in Creston, BC. Before obtaining his obituary and with clues from accession forms in the collection of paintings, it was determined that Victorine Kierstead had lived in Toronto during the thirties, forties and fifties. She was an aunt

to Ron Brown and had left no recorded family when she died. She was listed as a teacher by profession, living on Howard Street, Toronto in the voters’ list of 1972. On previous voters’ lists she was listed as an artist and then an art teacher. In the collection of work by her was an accession form to the Ontario Museum of Art at a time when the Group of Seven were frequently showing. Their influence can easily be recognised in her work. Victorine was actually Alice Victorine Kierstead, born to Victorine Pelland

and William Henry Kierstead on August 20th 1913 in Heron Street, Deer Park, Toronto. Her nephew was Ron Brown of Creston, whose mother was Mildred Kierstead, sister to William and married to Russell Brown. It appears Victorine was an artist most of her life for along with her extensive collection of work, submission forms for the Toronto Museum of Art, it has also been determined she was a member of the Watercolour Society of Canada. The collection of paintings, watercolours, acrylics, silk and block

prints is extensive and on loan from owner, Tracie Truscott. Please see our administrator Marisa Philips if interested in purchasing any of those works listed ‘For Sale.’ The Opening Reception for the Victorine Exhibit will be on Friday July 4th from 7pm – 9pm at the Arts Council gallery. In Memoriam

In Memoriam

Remembering ZEKE....

One year ago on June 24, 2013

Ezekiel Hawk Fantuz

disappeared from our lives as we knew it. ZEKE, we miss you for your sense of family, your love of the outdoors and its creatures, your hugs and your antics. Life will never be the same for us as we try to create a new normal. Loving you and missing you every minute of every hour of every day.... Dad David, Uncle Brian, Auntie Christine, Grandpa Walter & Grandma Joanna

Only the Best

A heart of gold stopped beating, two shining eyes at rest, God broke our hearts to prove, He only takes the best. God knows you had to leave us, but you did not go alone, for part of us went with you, the day He took you home. To some you are forgotten, to others just part of the past, but to us who loved and lost you, the memory will always last. Ezekiel “Zeke” Hawk Fantuz January 21, 1993 to June 24, 2013.

In our hearts and on our minds always, Love Mom, Shaun and Anders

Carolyn Gail Jensen (nee Green) "Gail" 1950 - 2014 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our dear wife and mother Gail Jensen on June 20, 2014. Gail lost her battle with Cancer and peacefully slipped away while in the comfort of her home with her family present. Gail was born on January 4, 1950. She was predeceased by her parents Doris and George and her sister Marilyn. She is survived by her husband of 42 years Jim, her daughters Diana (Ryan) James and Laurie (Cory Fedorwick) Jensen, her grandchildren Keira and Brylie James, as well as her sisters, brother-in-laws, sister-in-laws, nephews and nieces. We especially remember Gail for her spunky nature and her gracious and enthusiastic giving of herself to her family and friends. She was small in size but large in life and was fond of talking "at length" with anyone that would listen to her, as her many customers at M&M Meats will remember! Gail loved the outdoors and spent countless hours with her family and friends fishing and hunting and loved camping along with those great card games, star gazing and discussions around the campfires. A memorial service for Gail will be held at McPherson Funeral Home in Cranbrook on Friday, July 4, 2014 at 11:00 am. In lieu of flowers, those wishing to make a memorial donation in her honour may do so to the: East Kootenay S.P.C.A., PO Box 2, Cranbrook, British Columbia, V1C 4H6. Arrangements entrusted to McPherson Funeral Service. Condolences for the family can be offered at: www.mcphersonfh.com
