Burnaby’s Jamie O’Keeffe found herself caught in a cycle of debt ever since she turned to a payday lender similar to this one when she needed $50 to cover her phone bill. She plans to look into the new small loan product being offered by Vancity as a more affordable alternative.

Vancity is offering an alternative to payday loans that could help low-income people get onto firmer financial footing. For the past year she’s found herself increasingly drawn into debt to a payday lender. O’Keeffe, 55, is a member of social justice group ACORN’s Burnaby chapter which earlier this year called on Burnaby council to control the influx of payday lenders in lower-income neighbourhoods.

Three of Metro Vancouver’s worst intersections for crashes are in Burnaby. But that could soon change, according to ICBC. Changes to the configurations of the Willingdon, Kensington and Cariboo interchanges to accommodate new bridges over an expanded Highway 1 were engineered with an eye to making them safer. At the Willingdon interchange, which was cited in an ICBC report as the worst intersection in Metro Vancouver with 350 crashes in 2013, that’s meant moving the offramp from Highway 1 eastbound from a direct merge onto Willingdon to a signal-controlled turn onto the busy thoroughfare. The old merge of northbound and southbound vehicles heading to the highway’s eastbound on-ramp is now also controlled by signals. “Most of those intersections were 50 years old,” said John Dickinson, ICBC’s director of road safety. “When they were originally designed, safety wasn’t part of the equation.” Please see CITY, A3

Nor was the kind of traffic volume they now carry anticipated. Dickinson said the sheer number of cars and trucks using those interchanges made it inevitable they’d also record a high number of collisions. The Cariboo interchange onto Gagliardi was cited as the third-worst intersection with 250 collisions while the Kensington on- and off-ramps’ 210 crashes ranked it the sixth most dangerous intersection. Those two are still in various stages of their reconstruction. Dickinson said ICBC engineers will work with project engineers to make safety recommendations and occasionally even help pay for some of those improvements from an $8-million road program. But even the best engineering can’t account for driver carelessness, said Dickinson. “It’s driver behaviour that dictates whether there will be a crash,” he said. “There is always the potential for a collision.”

MARIO BARTEL/NEWSLEADER

Changes to the configuration of the Willingdon interchange with Highway 1 should make that intersection safer, says ICBC’s director of road safety, John Dickinson.

The outdoor plaza at Edmonds Park will host its official opening on Canada Day, Tuesday, July 1. The opening ceremony will be held at 11 a.m., followed by the ribbon and cake cuttings at 11:30 a.m. and celebrations until 2:30 p.m., including facepainting, music, carnival games, bingo and multicultural entertainment. The plaza is located behind Edmonds Community Centre. The outdoor facility offers theatre-style seating, a speaker system and stage. It’s right next to a tennis court, multi-sport court and the “great lawn” ideally suited for lawn bowling or outdoor picnics. There will be three sites for Canada Day celebrations in Burnaby—Edmonds Park, Burnaby Village Museum and a free concert at Swangard Stadium. Info: www.burnaby.ca/ canadaday

‘If Vancity can do it, why can’t the big banks?’ She’s on social assistance and after her rent in the Lougheed area is paid she has less than $100 to get through the month. A year ago, she didn’t have enough to cover her phone bill so she took out a $50 payday loan. That cost her $10 in interest on top of that when she paid it back. She’s currently got a $100 loan out, and will need to pay back $123 when her month is up. “I would be $10 to $23 short every time I paid it back.” So she has to take out another loan to help cover the difference. “I’d pay it back and then re-borrow so it’s like a vicious cycle.” Dubbed the Vancity Fair & Fast Loan, members of the credit union can borrow up to $1,500, usually have the loan processed

within a day and have from two months to two years to pay it back. The loans are charged a 19 per cent annual rate of interest, higher than conventional loans, but far less than payday lenders charge. If a $300 loan is repaid to Vancity after two weeks, that would cost $2.20. In contrast, under B.C. legislation, payday lenders can charge up to $69 in interest on the same amount over the same period. The maximum they can charge is a 600 per cent annual rate of interest. Meanwhile mainstream financial institutions aren’t typically equipped to give out small loans and do it quickly, Morris said. “We’re looking here at Vancity not to recreate a payday lender or

a payday office, but how can we offer something that’s fair, that’s pretty fast and helps people break the cycle of revolving credit or revolving debt?” The new loan product requires clients be members of the credit union, which costs a one-time fee of $5. There are no other application fees. To apply, members only need to show proof of income, two pieces of ID and for those with no credit history, a record of bill payments with two different companies. Repaying the Vancity loan will also help the clients build a credit history, Morris noted, something that doesn’t happen with payday lenders. “Without that credit history you’re pretty invisible to the financial world.” The credit union will also work

with them to try to improve their financial situation over the long term. Since the product was introduced quietly in April, already a “few hundred” such loans have been processed. It was officially launched on Monday. Morris said just as with any loan product, not everyone who applies will receive a loan. “We try to be flexible … We know there’s a need. There’s a gap there, definitely, in our society.” The credit union developed the product from the perspective of “can Vancity with its approach of financial inclusion and social justice do something different that’s sustainable for us that is also good for our members,” she said. Jerry Buckland, an economist with Menno Simons College of

the University of Winnipeg, has done extensive research on “fringe banks” in Canada, including payday lenders. The payday loan industry has flourished since mainstream banks began closing branches in lower income neighbourhoods and began focusing on middle and high income earners to boost profits, he said. Buckland suggested that providing people with more credit is not necessarily the answer when many are already deep in debt. However, he said he’s “quite impressed” at Vancity’s new offering. Vancity is the biggest credit union in Canada, but it’s small in comparison to the big banks, Buckland noted. “So hey, if Vancity can do it, why can’t the big banks? I think that’s very encouraging.”

Report cards to give varying levels of detail Amount of information will depend on school, grade Wanda Chow

wchow@burnabynewsleader.com

Parents of Burnaby school district students will receive versions of a report card, but how much information they contain will vary. “Everyone’s getting something,” said district superintendent Kevin Kaardal “Some will be more limited than others in terms of the information we have.” At the elementary level, not all schools had the same deadline for teachers to submit marks to principals, said Kaardal. If a school’s deadline was before the full strike started, and the teacher met the deadline, parents will receive a simplified report card that includes letter grades or achievement scales and possibly limited comments. That’s the case with about 48 per cent of K-7 students in the district, Kaardal said. “The rest will get a year-end statement including attendance

and a statement on what grade the child will be placed in the fall.” For high school students, senior grades are covered by a Labour Relations Board ruling. Those in Grade 12 will receive a final letter grade but no comments. Grades 10 and 11 students will receive a final grade. That will be based on the latest available mark available, which will be submitted to their teachers for them to confirm or adjust. Again, there will be no comments provided. Students in grades 8 and 9 will receive the most recent mark they received for each course. There will be no final grades or comments but they will include a statement on their placement next year. For students at risk academically, placement decisions will be reviewed when more information is available. Distribution of the report cards is still up in the air, Kaardal said. If picket lines come down, they could be picked up at the schools, otherwise they’ll be mailed out.

Once details are finalized, the information will be posted on the district’s website (http:// sd41.bc.ca/). “It’s a challenging situation we’re in and we hope they are able to get to a resolution as quickly as possible so we can have a smooth start in the new [school] year.” • As of Wednesday, the district didn’t know if summer school would be offered. “If the strike does continue, we will be unable to offer our summer learning program,” Kaardal said in a letter to parents. “As we recognize that for many students summer session is an essential part of their learning program, we are waiting to make this decision until the last minute.” A decision will be posted on the district website. Similarly, the district did not know whether childcare and summer daycamp programs would be run out of school facilities. Parents are encouraged to contact the program operators directly for updated information as it’s available.

OPINION NEWSLEADER’S VIEW:

PUBLISHED & PRINTED BY BLACK PRESS LTD. at 7438 Fraser Park Drive, Burnaby, B.C. V5J 5B9

PHOTO OF THE WEEK: Elinor Craig took this photo of rain-dappled pink dogwood flowers earlier this month at the corner of Central Boulevard and Olive Avenue in Burnaby.

Science deficit Two weights, two measures. Whichever is more convenient. At least that is how it seems Prime Minister Stephen Harper deals with science, scientists and their advice. What other explanation can there be for Harper saying in a CBC interview, “it’s a tragedy when people start to go off on their own theories and not listen to scientific evidence,” in reference to parents who for various reasons do not allow their children to receive immunization shots Let’s take a pause to let that bit of irony sink in. Harper has consistently worked to eliminate or, at the very least, impede the development of scientific research, eliminate the objectivity of science from any debate by muzzling scientists, cutting budgets and just plain ignoring their findings and advice. More than 2,000 government scientists have lost their jobs over the past five years. The overall effect is less science being done, fewer scientists to tell the public of the importance or implications of their work. Canada’s fiscal deficit may shrink a bit, but our knowledge deficit grows. Facts can be problematic, a nuisance, a hinderance, especially when he has an agenda and the only thing between Harper and the realization of his agenda is science. Knowledge of our environment, and the deplorable condition it is in, is particularly troubling for Harper’s agenda. So gone is most of the funding for Environment Canada, Fisheries and Oceans, as well as for the Polar Environment Atmospheric Research Laboratory, and the Experimental Lakes Area. If we don’t know how mismanaged and mistreated the environment is, then we won’t have to lie awake worrying. —Penticton Western News

Denials and smiles for 55-plus Forget about the Golden Years. That’s old hat. (Pun intended, forgive me.) Now the age-bracket buzzword is “55-plus.” I’m not sure how that specific point in life suddenly became socially important and prominent, although I strongly suspect it germinated in the brain of a marketing genius somewhere in North America, and then spread like new marketing ideas are wont to do. There are condo developments for 55-plus buyers, 55-plus hotel packages, and 55-plus activity groups. Recently, I went past a community light board the other day and saw an ad for “over-55 tours…” I thought… what is an over-55 tour? Do you board a special bus which tours past captive herds of people who are over 55 and you ogle them like the water buffaloes at the zoo? Oh look, there’s one filling out tax forms! Why is it crying? OK, probably you have to be over 55 to go on such a tour. But why? What happens that someone who is, for instance, 52,

Andrew Holota not allowed to see or know? Personal consultation on the inappropriateness of wearing spandex bicycle shorts over the magic age of 55? Who wants to hear that? Maybe it’s special summarized screenings of all the TV shows that are on after 10 p.m., which is now your beddy-bye time. Is 55 the point where you can no longer communicate effectively with anyone younger? Like, did you see that new WhoTube video on the IntraWeb? Pffft... I can speak digitalese. I’m not sure I’d want to surround myself with just people who are over 55. I mean, isn’t that kind of ageelitist in our all-inclusive society? Hi, I’m 56. Wink-wink, nudgenudge. I know you know what I know.

7438 Fraser Park Dr., Burnaby, B.C. V5J 5B9 newsroom@burnabynewsleader.com burnabynewsleader.com | newwestnewsleader.com

Know what I mean? Raise one eyebrow, give knowing look. Really, if I had to choose, I’d rather be around people who are under 20. I still know more than they do. Or at least, I can think I do. Maybe people who are 55-plus get together to commiserate over the fact that at one time in our lives, about 10 or 15 years ago, we were thinking about Freedom 55 – when we would retire and travel and frolic in the sun, before our hips and knees needed replacing. Where have all the Freedom 55 people gone? I’ll tell you where they are. They’re on stress leave! Retirement at 55? It’s become a cruel joke. First the tech stock bubble burst in the early 2000s. For those of us who were smugly still standing after that retirement fund disaster, along came circa 2008. Blue chip stocks? Hah! Gotcha anyway, smart guy! For a good portion of the 55-plus crowd, holding onto the concept of Retirement 65 is like believing one’s six-pack is coming back.

Maybe that’s another reason us 55-plussers are supposed to hang around together – or at least the guys. We can wear our polo shirts outside our pants, and no one questions it or makes snarky comments about muffin tops. Personally, I find all this concentration on being 55-plus rather disconcerting, if not downright anxiety-inducing. I’d rather not dwell on it or be regularly reminded by selective association. In fact, I’ve not really thought much about being beyond the age of 55 since that actually happened, which was a perfectly good point to go into denial. If you start thinking too much about 55, then suddenly one day you’ll wake up and find that you are. And you’ll start paying attention to all the marketing promotions, and then you’ll actually start acting like you’re 55 ... or plus. My advice? Don’t act your age. Go find your spandex bicycle shorts. Andrew Holota is editor of The Abbotsford News.

COMMENT

Gondola not magic solution for SFU Apparently there’s still interest in that gondola from SFU to Production Way SkyTrain station. How well will it work in bad weather, especially windstorms? What are the chances that it will sway in the wind, if not to the point of actual failure, but to the point that people won’t ride it? Yes, they close the mountain to buses in the snow, but how many days a year is that, compared to the windstorms? And, TransLink will still have to run buses up the mountain for those students going in any direction other than to Production Way station and when the gondola breaks down (everything breaks down). The article said that the overcrowded buses are a concern. I’ve seen those buses and they are crowded. Will those gondolas be less crowded than an articulated bus? Previous articles have suggested that part of the fares will be from tourists wanting to take the ride. What happens if enthusiastic projections fall short? Cloudy days will kill the view, there’s no skiing up there and, honestly, we’ve got bigger mountains. How long before TransLink is losing money, or an

independent operator wants a subsidy? Really, TransLink should stick with buses, at least until we see how bad the Compass Card is. E. Thompson Burnaby

COULD REFINERY OPTIONS SAVE THE DAY? Re: Kinder Morgan’s complaints unfounded: City of Burnaby As the mayor suggests, there is no plan except for what the lobbyists order. However, the key issue remains. We do not want to see the huge increase in bitumenladen tankers bobbing about in Burrard Inlet and travelling through our Gulf Islands passes. There may be a way out of this pipeline mess. The refinery option could be sufficient for our leaders to “order” Kinder Morgan to move their loading terminal to Port Simpson. The pipeline proponents (Enbridge, Kinder Morgan) have chosen the historical bully methods: Step 1 DECIDE (behind closed doors), Step 2 ACT (have a lengthy hearing—where no one listens),

Step 3 NEGOTIATE (local gab fests; pretty media ads, local handouts) And then typically call on the leader in the “national interest” to “bless” their ill-conceived proposals. While the public’s main concerns were ignored. Fortunately, the electorate has the opportunity to decide—at the “real” NEB—the National Election Ballot! Does opportunity knock for B.C.—will the refinery options save the day? Let’s assume that at least one refinery succeeds—here is a chance to bring Enbridge Northern Gateway and Kinder Morgan bitumen pipelines from Alberta to Port Simpson, to serve world markets, the refinery and the export market. And most importantly, to minimize the probability of bitumen spills in those special environmentally sensitive, busy waters and precious shores. Carl Shalansky —online comment burnabynewsleader.com

School support staff get new contract Mario Bartel

photo@burnabynewsleader.com

The Burnaby board of education ratified a new contract with more than 400 support staff in a conference call Tuesday night. But that doesn’t mean those workers will be going to work anytime soon. Paul Simpson, the president of CUPE local 379, said his members will continue to honour picket lines set up by teachers outside Burnaby schools even though they voted

98 per cent in favour of accepting the provincial framework agreement on Sunday. Support staff includes educational assistants, childcare, trades and maintenance workers. “We will support the teachers until this is over,” said Simpson. That could have implications into the next school year if teachers continue their strike action through the summer months, said Greg Frank, the board’s secretary treasurer. He said maintenance and

repair work normally done in summer by CUPE workers won’t be completed, nor will audits and other paperwork done by clerical staff. Summer school could also be affected. “We will need to understand what format the strike will take over the summer,” said Frank.

Under terms of the new agreement regular support staff will be paid even if they don’t cross teachers’ picket lines, said Simpson. The new five-year contract takes effect July 1. It includes wage increases totalling 5.5 per cent, increased hours for education assistants and improvements

to extended health benefits plans.

Tech workshop for seniors Learning how to use the myriad of electronic devices like cellphones or tablets can be bewildering. Especially for seniors who are new to the technology. So the Cameron Seniors Centre has enlisted students from Burnaby Mountain secondary and other nearby schools to help seniors find their way around a tablet, smart phone or e-reader. The two-hour workshops are free to members of Cameron Seniors, and will be held in the Juniper Room at the Cameron Recreation Complex. Registration is required as space is limited. To find out more, including a schedule of workshops and a link to register online, go to www. cameron55plus.org. Or call 604-297-4456.

Driveway

The 2014 Honda Odyssey is ready to take you on your next big messy adventure with the kids and it can help you clean up too. The van features the world’s first in-car vacuum system called the HondaVac. It comes complete with a replaceable filter, canister bag, nozzle accessories, and a hose capable of reaching the front seats. I feel a family email coming on. My sister-in-law Cristina has an Odyssey van and has been transporting a full size shop vac and leaf blower around for years. My two nieces make quite a mess, unlike my tidy offspring. Just kidding. But before we get into an interior clean-up, let’s cast an eye over the vehicle’s exterior looks. It has a stylish hood that sweeps down towards the grille. The headlights are angled up and back giving the profile a sculpted look. Honda refers to the overall design as a lightning bolt. Not only does it provide an exclusive appearance, but also adds increased visibility for third row passengers. Very nice interior, everything laid out nicely. So many bells and whistles you almost would want to run through a checklist before driving. Eight-passenger seating with a total passenger volume of 4,887 litres, whatever, that means. And all those passengers get thirsty so Honda put in 15 cup holders. The third row is a one-motion 60/40 split ‘Magic’ seat that can accommodate three passengers and still leave 1,087 litres of cargo volume – that’s room for a lot of slushies for later in the journey. The second row is a 3 mode seating with fold down center console. Driver and front passenger seats are captain’s chairs that are very comfortable. My tester included a leather wrapped steering wheel with audio controls, channel selector, cruise control, and hands-free telephone button. The instrument panel is easier to read, thanks to a little tweaks by the engineers. Satellite-linked Navigation screen with trilingual voice recognition, 3D map and FM traffic is also available that uses GPS technology and a 60GB hard drive based operating system that provides the driver with turn-by-turn voice guidance to their chosen destination. The screen also is used for the back-up camera that offers three different views, normal view, wide angle, and top down. Both side sliding doors open automatically via the key fob or a switch on the dash. A 270-watt AM/FM/CD audio system with MP3/Windows Media audio playback and seven speakers including a subwoofer is standard, with a 650-watt and 12-speaker version also available. Safety is paramount with mini-van owners; the Odyssey earned a 2013 IIHS top safety pick and is the only minivan with a 5-star safety rating from the NHTSA. RatES LOW aS The engine is a 3.5 litre, 24 valve, SOHC, i-VTEC V6aS that produces 248 hp and 250 lb-ft of torque. The engines variable cylinder management system allows the engine to run on three, four or six cylinders depending on the requirements. All models receive a 6-speed automatic transmission. The combination makes the drive that much more comfortable and enjoyable.

Carrier OF THe WeeK: JACOB

Cassandra Ebner, a professional stuntwoman, flies through the air as she takes a blow from a baseball bat in a demonstration of movie stunt work at Burnaby Village Museum on Saturday. The airborne recoil is made possible by cables and pullies that are attached to a harness worn by the stunt person to launch them safely with dramatic effect.

Hi, my name is Jacob and I love being a Burnaby NewsLeader carrier. I get to meet people in my neighbourhood and earn money. I also get great exercise! I am learning to be responsible with the money I earn. I am also learning to be responsible as a worker and with my time. I love telling people that I have a job! Right now, I am saving up for a car and I also have some spending money for video games and treats. Thanks NewsLeader for nominating me as “Carrier of the Week”.

If you are interested in becoming a carrier for the NewsLeader or would like to nominate a carrier please call 604.436.2472 Thank you to Panago (Kingsway & Arcola) for their kind sponsorship of the Carrier of the Week program.

It’s like living the extra features in a DVD. Visitors to Burnaby Village Museum this summer won’t only learn about the history of movie and television production in the city at a special exhibit in the Stride Studio, but they’ll also see how

movie magic is created with special demonstrations put on by industry professionals like make-up and special effects artists, as well as animal trainers and costumers. The movie demonstrations are held every Saturday through the summer season.

If the mayors agree to hold the referendum sometime next spring Stone said the wording of the question would not have to be decided until this fall. The province would also have to determine how to implement a new regional carbon tax and assess all the costs and economic impacts from a higher tax on vehicle fuels, home heating and industry. Although the mayors have consistently opposed further increases in property tax over and above the extra three per cent lift TransLink is automatically permitted each year, Stone once again pointed them back to that option.

Premier living at Polygon’s Kingston House Heritage-style elegance is at top of mind at Polygon’s Kingston House, a collection of two-bedroom apartment residences in a master-planned community that is inspired by an Ivy League legacy. “You can move in this summer,” says sales manager Judy Rohatyn. “With payments from $899 a month, this is a great opportunity for first-time buyers to purchase a home in the South Surrey market.” Kingston House is the first apartment collection at Polygon’s Harvard Gardens, a master-planned community that is also

close to top schools, golf courses, shopping and dining. “There’s nothing like this anywhere else,” Rohatyn says. “Many parents of first-time buyers recognize the great value and are bringing their kids to Kingston House to assist them in buying their first home.” The homes at Kingston House are spacious and inviting, with over-height ceilings on the main and fourth floor, generous patios or covered decks, and huge windows. Engineered stone countertops in the kitchen are complemented by flat-panelled cabinetry and stainless-steel appliances. Rich wood laminate

NEW HOME DEVELOPMENT

flooring is featured throughout the main areas, with lush carpeting in the bedrooms. Spa-like bathrooms have designerselected imported porcelain tile flooring, engineered stone countertops and a contemporary patterned hand-set ceramic tile tub and shower surround with marble and glass mosaic tile accents. The master ensuite adds another touch of luxury with dual porcelain undermount sinks (most plans) and polished chrome accessories. Outside, the architecture is inspired by the East Coast, with brick cladding, natural wood soffits and black metal detailing. Homeowners at Kingston House will also have access to The Rowing Club; a private residents-only clubhouse featuring over 9,000 sq.ft. of resort-style amenities such as an outdoor pool and spa, gymnasium, fitness facilities, a screening room and other amenities. A resident concierge will be available to assist with your every need, and two fully furnished suites are available for out-of-town guests. Two-bedroom homes start at $259,900. For more information, visit by the presentation centre at 152nd Street and 32nd Avenue, open 12 to 6 p.m. daily except Fridays, call 604-541-8092, or visit polyhomes.com.

The Cottages at Seabright Farm are located just minutes from the Lower Mainland, but you’ll easily be able to put your worries aside at your historically inspired cottage in a gorgeous ocean-view location. Tons of amenities are just around the corner, including the Point Roberts Marina.

Feeling the breeze at The Cottages at Seabright Farm By Kerry Vital

The Cottages at Seabright Farm is the largest and newest residential project in Point Roberts. Construction recently started, and Lower Mainland residents are flocking to it to purchase their own private piece of paradise. “You can purchase an ocean-view cottage for less than the price of an average condominium in Vancouver,” says Wayne Knowles of Orca Shores LLC, the project’s

developer. Seabright Farm is comprised of 58 lots spread across 62 acres of gently sloping south-facing waterfront. The large lots (1/4 to 1/2 an acre) offer privacy along with the great views and are located in three distinct zones: the Bluff, the Meadows and the Woodlands. Seabright Farm will also have a barn/community centre, greenhouse, outdoor swimming pool and hot tubs, sauna, community vegetable and flower gardens,

and orchards. The trails are perfect for running, cycling or horseback riding, and offer direct access to the beach. Because of both the elevation and south slope of the entire property, you’ll find a gorgeous view no matter where you purchase. The cottage plans range from 850 to over 2,500 square feet, in a variety of two-or-morebedroom floor plans. The styles include open floor plans, stone fireplaces, sunny window seats, hardwood flooring, large relaxing decks and covered porches. All of the plans give owners the option to expand their cottages in the future, whether it’s with a guesthouse, a studio or a separate master suite. Covered decks and breezeways can be built between the buildings, and garages (complete with guest suites) or potting sheds added to truly make your Seabright cottage your own. The cottage designs have been specifically developed to reflect the historical summer cottages and simple farm buildings typical of Point Roberts. That character is obvious when you visit the sales centre, which is actually an original farmhouse from the 1890s that’s been outfitted with finds from garage sales and Pottery Barn. It will become an additional gathering place for Seabright owners, along with the barn-themed community hall that will be used as a venue for neighbourhood

gatherings, art shows for local artists, cooking demonstrations, musical performances and wine tastings, among many other things! And beyond Seabright Farm, Point Roberts has plenty of other things to do, whether you’re staying for a month, a week or just a weekend. Play a round of golf at the 18-hole Point Roberts Golf and Country Club, or pay a visit to the Lighthouse Marine Park to see Orca whales, comb the beach or go clamming or crabbing. The 275-acre Lily Point Marine Reserve is just around the beach corner from Seabright Farm, and features sandy bluffs and tidal flats. The full-service Point Roberts Marina has over 900 slips and is also only minutes away. The Point’s unique restaurants and eclectic shops round out the experience. Canadians looking to purchase a cottage at Seabright Farm will be able to secure attractive long-term financing through a U.S. banking institution with 20 per cent down, and a Real Estate Disclosure Statement has been filed in British Columbia. With the opening of the South Fraser Perimeter Road earlier this year and plans to build a new bridge to replace the tunnel on Hwy 99, getting to Point Roberts is becoming that much more convenient from all parts of the Lower Mainland. The pricing at Seabright Farm is also exceptional, with lots starting at $180,000 U.S., while cottage and lot combinations start at $399,000. For more information about The Cottages at Seabright Farm, visit www. seabrightfarmcottages.com, call tollfree at 1-888-732-6915 or email info@ seabrightfarmcottages.com.
