Safeway in mall closing BY HARLEY RICHARDS ADVOCATE BUSINESS EDITOR The company that owns the Sobeys and Canada Safeway brands is purging its grocery network of “underperforming stores, with the Safeway in Red Deer’s Parkland Mall among the casualties. Empire Company Ltd. announced on Thursday
that it’s closing approximately 50 stores, with the majority of these in Western Canada. Keri Scobie, communications manager for Sobeys West, subsequently confirmed that the Parkland Mall Safeway is one of 15 Safeway and Sobeys stores in Alberta that are on the list. Neither the Safeway store at 4408 Gaetz Ave. in Red Deer nor any of the Sobeys stores in Central Alberta are slated to close. Scobie said Empire made its decisions on the ba-

sis of sales performance. “They’re difficult decisions to make but when you look at your network and you want to optimize it and you want to grow and move forward, sometimes you have to make these tough decisions. At the end of the day, these stores all sort of fell into that category of underperforming and no longer financially viable.

MURAL PROJECT WASHED AWAY
BY MURRAY CRAWFORD ADVOCATE STAFF A Red Deer man faces a jail sentence for fulfilling a violent rape fantasy at the expense of a self-described sex worker who was badly bruised and lost consciousness several times during the ordeal. Nathan Michael Desharnais, 25, was convicted on Thursday afternoon of two counts of aggravated sexual assault, one for endangering the life of the victim, and unlawful confinement. He was tried in Red Deer Court of Queen’s Bench before Justice Adam Germain. In his closing arguments, Crown prosecutor Maurice Collard said the violent sex assault was not consensual, pointing to the fact Desharnais used duct tape, not “fluffy handcuffs and silk tassels. Rather, the victim became an unwilling participant in one man’s violent rape fantasy when she was bound, gagged, choked and raped, he said. Desharnais and the woman, who can’t be named because of a court-ordered publication ban protecting the identity of sexual assault victims, had consensual sex twice before the June 4, 2012, incident. They met through Craigslist, an online website.

SMOKE FREE BYLAW
‘Vaping’ banned in public places: city BY ADVOCATE STAFF The City of Red Deer is clearing the air about the use of electronic cigarettes in public places. Under the city’s Smoke Free Bylaw, the definition of “smoking applies to “vaping — the practise of using an e-cigarette — and “smoking combustible cigarettes. An e-cigarette simulates the look and feel of a tobacco cigarette and uses a battery to heat a liquid solution, producing a visible, vapour emission that may produce an odour depending on the flavour of the liquid used. The city is treating the practise of vaping akin to smoking, which means it is prohibited in public places outlined in the bylaw.

Anglin allegations ‘preposterous’: Wildrose party boss BY PAUL COWLEY ADVOCATE STAFF Central Alberta Wildrose MLA Joe Anglin’s bombshell allegation that a party official offered him a thinly veiled bribe to step down is “preposterous, says the party’s president. “I have absolutely no idea what he’s talking about, said David Yager, who had not heard anything prior about the supposed overture by an unidentified party member. Anglin, who represents Rimbey-Rocky Mountain House-Sundre, claimed on Wednesday that a party member suggested earlier this month that if he stepped down as MLA for the riding, he could land a cushy job with the Alberta Electric System Operator, Alberta Energy Regulator or Alberta Surface Rights Board. Anglin said he was appalled by the offer and tossed the senior party member out of his office. The outspoken MLA is fighting an increasingly nasty nomination battle for his seat with his former constituency association president Jason Nixon. He highlighted the bribery incident as an example
of what is wrong behind the scenes with the party, which Anglin contends is straying from its democratic and grassroots ideals. Yager also addressed Anglin’s accusation that Nixon broke party rules by not quitting his constituency position before announcing his nomination bid. Anglin’s complaint was reviewed by a party committee and rejected. An appeal was also unsuccessful, which prompted Anglin to complain the party was picking favourites. Yager dismissed that suggestion. “I’ve never met the man (Nixon). Candidates are carefully vetted and then pass muster before a local candidate nominating committee. “The members of that riding are the people that select that candidate. It’s not up to me or anyone on executive committee in this process to say this guy is a good candidate or that guy is a bad candidate. “Of the 14 MLAs who went through the nomination process, only one was challenged. I’m not going to say anything more. I think that says something.
