Wildlife detection system to be tested on Highway 3 BARRY COULTER
The corridor between Cranbrook, Fernie, Sparwood and the Alberta border is “Ground Zero” for collisions with wildlife in B.C. And a new high-tech wildlife detection systems will be tested on Highway 3 between Fort Steele and the Alberta border to better warn
motorists about the potential for collisions. Todd Stone, Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure, announced the testing of the new technology at a Chamber of Commerce luncheon Wednesday at the Heritage Inn in Cranbrook. “We recognized that one of the leading causes of collisions in B.C. is
the high prevalence of wildlife on many corridors, and nowhere greater than here in the Kootenays,” Stone said. “In fact, the Cranbrook-Fernie-Sparwood (corridor) is pretty much Ground Zero for some of the highest rates of collisions in the province.

A young Cranbrook woman will vie for the title of Miss B.C. this weekend in a province-wide pageant. Jacqueline Potter, 20, is one of 50 B.C. women taking part in the Miss B.C. Pageant, which will be held June 30 in Fort Langley. Potter said she learned about the pageant in January, and decided to apply because of what the contest stands for. “What really intrigued me about it was that it isn’t a typical beauty pageant,” she said. “It’s more about self-esteem, self-confidence. It doesn’t matter what size you are, what height you are. They just want everybody to feel comfortable going and being who they are. That’s why I joined it.” Pageant creator Darren Storsley said Miss B.C. prides itself on not discriminating against any women.
JACQUELINE POTTER It accepts contestants who are single or married, of any age, height and weight, parents or no.
