Sabrina Neufeld of Castlegar has been playing, working… and working some more at ballet for 12 of her 16 years.

As with many little girls, Sabrina’s imagination was captured by the graceful images of ballerinas, and with her parents’ full support she began a program of dance instruction as a four-year-old.

Sabrina, along with her mom Rochelle granted a request for an interview with the West Kootenay Advertiser on June 8.

“It wasn’t really serious at all… just fun, once a week,” said the dancer of her start.

“We lived in Edmonton and I did it for a bit. Then we moved to Castlegar when I was in Grade 2 and I danced at Turning Pointe (Academy) for six years. It really helped me to be motivated to do something.”

There has been an evident desire from the outset of her dancing involvement and Sabrina has stuck with it through countless bruises, blisters, sprains and spasms. She’s hung

in there long enough for her natural talent to start showing through… long enough for all that hard work to be able to make dancing start to look easy.

Sabrina was in Penticton this past weekend for a provincial competition in which she cracked the top five in her category, earning an honorable mention. The finish is an encouraging one – added motivation she’ll put to good use as she heads out in late June for an intensive summer training session in Calgary. Other Rossland dancers invited to Penticton were Sally Turnball- senior Ballet (also received honourable mention); Charlotte McKay – junior Ballet; and Bethany Johnson – junior Stage. Sabrina’s category was intermediate Ballet.

Observers were: Ali Ferguson. Emelia Hoffman and Brynn Streadwick.

Sabrina regularly trains and studies with Kootenay Danceworks in Rossland. Due to her strong artistic commitment and demanding school schedule she’s got no time left over

for much else. Concerted training in Rossland plus the critical need for a good night’s sleep helps to look after her agenda.

Sabrina is well aware of the possible length of a dancer’s career. As in tennis and other demanding pursuits, the expected top end in terms of age is the early to mid-30s, and Sabrina is fine with that. continued on page A6

A Regional District of Central Kootenay director is asking for a breakdown of monthly or annual spending by area.

In the wake of the controversy over the awarding of a furniture contract to an out-oftown company, rural Castlegar director Andy Davidoff wondered if it was possible for accounting staff to list how much is spent in each municipality or electoral area.

Chair John Kettle said “all of us have had calls after the situation with the newspaper in Nelson with regard to how much we don’t spend in certain areas. It might be an overreaction, but it’s something people now really want to know.

Unfortunately, this whole thing got blown out of proportion and now it’s an issue in a lot of areas.”

He said the Castlegar Chamber of Commerce called him to ask how much money they spent in that city.

However, Nakusp mayor Karen Hamling thought the issue was being overblown. “We need to get a grip on this,” she said. “People who aren’t in Nelson or Castlegar aren’t going to complain because nobody’s coming to our community to buy things. You have to buy it where it’s closest and most available without adding a lot of extra freight. I think this is getting a little bit silly.”

East Shore director Garry Jackman said he didn’t think it was meaningful to break down spending by electoral areas, noting his area only has a few retail businesses. “If you ask residents what they buy within their own rural area, I’d be amazed if it was more than a couple per cent. Meaningful might be what do we buy within the RDCK or within the Kootenays versus outside of that.

To me, that’s shopping local.”

Rural Salmo director Hans Cunningham also said not much money might be spent directly in his area, but neither do many of his constituents work there: “They work in Nelson, Trail, and Castlegar for those businesses we actually put money into.”

In May, the regional district’s accounts payable totaled $2.09 million.

In B.C. alone, more than 100 million animals are raised on farms each year. Many different kinds of animals can be considered to be farm animals. Farm animals are generally raised for one of the following purposes: 1. Food (e.g. meat, eggs, and dairy products) 2. Fiber (e.g. wool, fleece) 3. Work (e.g. draft animals for traditional farming or forestry) 4. Fur/Pelts/Hides Knowing that the farming industry affects so many animals, the BCSPCA is proud of the SPCA Certified program.

The program is an independent, third party animal welfare certification system. SPCA Certified brings stakeholders together to further common goals in farm animal welfare.

Products come from farms which are annually assessed to SPCA Certified farm animal welfare standards and operation policies by trained, independent inspectors. Certification is determined by third party, independent review panelists.

Current farm animal certifications include: beef cattle, dairy cattle, sheep, pigs, turkeys, broiler (meat) chickens and egg laying chickens.

While we are seeing some local farms going through the processes to become SPCA Certified, the Trail Regional BCSPCA would love to see more farms getting involved. With many people becoming more and more concerned about the welfare of the animals used for meat, the SPCA Certified program will only increase in momentum.

As her mom Rochelle pointed out, there can also be teaching opportunities for dancers following their active careers in the spotlight. There are also many valuable life skills that come with the training, including selfdiscipline, time management, goal-setting… to name just a few.

To this point Sabrina has not suffered and serious wear and tear.

Asked about injuries the dancer said that apart from having slightly bowed legs, which add a bit to the strain on them, she’s managed to avoid injuries.

This is definitely a serious pursuit that Sabrina and her family are into, and they’re contributing in every way they can. The financial demands, according to mom, surpass even those of a minor hockey player. A pair of ballet shoes, Rochelle relates, goes for $94 US, and its life expectancy is only eight hours of use.

Sabrina, incidentally, has two brothers… the three are triplets.

Sabrina was in Seattle this past January to audition for a number of U.S. programs that had sent representatives. She says that due to size and population the odds of progressing south of the border are better than in Canada.

She also, apparently, possesses the look and physique more sought after in the U.S.

Eye-catching steel at collector car nirvana

You didn’t need a bidder’s paddle to enjoy the excitement of the second annual Vancouver Collector Car Show & Auction.

More than 650 collector and classic autos descended upon the PNE Fairgrounds this past weekend and another 150 went on the block, many surpassing their reserve bid limits. Speed TV’s Steve Magnante was on hand to move the auction along but the

cars were the true stars.

Yours truly focussed on the beauties that were for sale, as many of the gems displayed by the car clubs represented at the show will undoubtedly show up in Driveway over the summer season of show and shines.

Here are 10 that caught my eye – a photo gallery of the cars mentioned but not published here, can be viewed online at drivewaycanada.ca 1955 Chevrolet 2-door Post Sedan: For those who like to

The cop show genre goes back to the pre-TV days of radio (where you had to imagine what black and white your favorite cop was driving). Here are some favorite full-size, rear-wheeldrive American cop cars from 60 years of the best cop shows: “Adam 12” (1972 AMC Matador): Although it was shot

in the 1970s, in many ways, “Adam 12” was a throwback to 1950s cop shows in which gangs, heroin dealers and street snitches didn’t exist and officers Reed and Malloy played by Kent McCord and Martin Milner rarely drew their guns, let alone actually capped anyone. Stowe, Vermont – Despite the relatively early call time, a group of almost 100 Mazda Miata/MX-5 drivers/

passengers gathers for the morning’s meeting.

The weather is looking favourable even though the a.m. envelops the crowd with its chilliness. It’s not

raining though. That’s a good sign.

Each May long weekend, a group of club members look forward to the event.

It’s been going for over 20 years and hasn’t disappointed. The crowd gets rowdier by the minute so go-time is just around the corner.

The meeting wraps up; we branch into our respective groups and fire up the engines.

As honorary members for the event, my co-pilot – aka my mother Zsuzsanna Straub – and I get behind the wheel of our MX-5. Within moments, we’re topless. The car. Not us!

Boulders are scattered and the path is paved around it. The intermittent obstacles would likely be the outcome of two Greek gods having a rock fight.

The sinuous and slender road is a hoot to drive through especially with no one in front of you. The occasional crackling on the CB radios frequently is overpowered by instructions from the leader.

Like a mother duck summoning her young, we followed in order. We stuck together and took in some breathtaking scenery of New England.

Scenery aside, what was the most interesting to breathe in was the enthusiasm and en-

Liz Burns has “Miatatude” stickered across her windshield. Miata earrings dangle from her ears as she professes her love of her emerald beauty.

Another owner decided to turn his conventional doors into ones that open up not out.

At breakfast, lunch and dinner, they regale each other with stories of other events they’ve been on. Outbursts

of laughter perk up the ears of bystanders; making them wish they were at that table reliving the memories. The camaraderie of those young and young at heart is undisputable.

Liz was one of the first members of the Trillium Miata Club.

She expected to join a group of Miata owners and drive with them on weekends. Liz says she “didn’t expect to make friends for 25 years” but she did.

Pickleball players brought their paddles and wiffle balls to Butler Park in Trail on June 21 to witness the grand opening with contributors and members of Trail city council cutting the ribbon at the brandnew pickleball courts.

Four new courts were already put to good use by players before the ceremony had even started and Wayne Kissick, volunteer and local pickleball player, says the new courts in Trail are just part of an international rise in popularity for the sport.

“It is the fastest growing sport in North America,” he said. “I think it is three tennis courts a week that are being turned

In 2011, Trail was the place where pickleball became a medal sport at the 2011 BC Senior Games and Kissick can’t see participation slowing down anytime soon. It is now the third largest participation sport at the games.

“We hope to get some tournaments going because we have the main courts in West Kootenay,” he said. “There are some in Castlegar, but those are tennis courts with temporary lines.”

years, when it was played in the gyms,” said Kissick. “As we got more players, we got out to the tennis courts and we would chalk the courts down [to pickleball size courts]. Then the city agreed to let us put lines on the tennis courts and then after that, we worked on getting one of the tennis courts converted to four pickleball courts.”

Kissick says it has taken three years of groundwork and

grants to get this project finished, but now that it is complete, he hopes to see more future players coming out to give pickleball a shot.

“We have probably about 50 to 60 people right now that play,” he said. “Every week we get someone new come out. People walk by, wonder what we are doing, we invite them to give it a try and they tell us they had fun.”

First time players don’t need to worry about having their own equipment. Kissick says there will be a stash of paddles and balls for the general public to use anytime. “[New players] don’t have to have a racket,” he said. “We are going to have to a box on the fence so they can just come in and grab a racket and play. First timers can come, or anyone can come out and practice and improve on their game.”

The sport is especially popular with the older generation, explained Trail Mayor Dieter Bogs. “[The popularity] isn’t surprising,” he said.

“A lot of these people, I played badminton with and as you get older, you don’t move as fast. This seems ot be the sport that accommodates you as you get older and I think that’s great.”

Bogs says he wouldn’t be surprised to see the popularity of pickleball grow even more in the next few years. “It’s really catching on and I wouldn’t be surprised if in the future, they ask for even more courts.”

The courts were possible with grants from Kootenay Savings Credit Union, The Columbia Basin Trust, Teck Operations and $5,000 worth of man hours and resources from The City of Trail.
