Town, RDCK agree on fire service

BY LORNE ECKERSLEY Advance Staff It has been three years in the making, but the Town of Creston and Regional District of Central Kootenay have approved a fire services agreement that will extend coverage to Arrow Creek.

“The time involved has been frustrating, especially for town and regional fire chiefs, who came up with this proposal years ago,” said Mayor Ron Toyota. “But we also have a better document to work with — the chiefs and staff have done some great work to provide clarity in how fire protection will function in much of the Creston Valley.”

An appendix to the new contract binds the town and RDCK to jointly maintain a minimum number of firefighting personnel so that adequate response can be expected throughout the designated fire protection area.

The sounds of engines chugging away filled the air at the Creston Museum on June 19, as members of the museum’s antique engine club got a few of the artifacts up and running — the first time in decades for some.

“These have been sitting here for 30 years,” said Ken Thom, who used to have his own collection of over 60.

The museum has 11 stationary engines — as well as a generator and three tractors — and several members of the club got a few running, including a 1920 pump engine manufactured in Brandon, Man., and an engine made in Ottawa, Kansas. They were designed to power other machines, such as a fruit press, grain crusher or cream separator.

The last time the Ottawa engine was started up was over 10 years ago — longer for some of the others — said museum manager Tammy Hardwick, who is planning to combine an engine event with the annual quilt show in the fall.

Along with the museum’s engines, Thom brought a couple of his own, including a 1905 Oldsmobile engine — built in a time before the throttle was in use.

“This engine runs wide open,” he said.

The museum’s collection, Thom added, is an impressive one. Many engines that had no proven need were confiscated and melted down during the Second World War. “They’ve got some really good engines here,” he said. “They’re really lucky to have them.”

“I think the details are where the great work by the chiefs and staff really shine,” Toyota said. “It is now very clear how fires in each area will be responded to.”

For example, in an appendix to the agreement, for a residential fire in Erickson and the Area C contract area, response to a first alarm will come from two engine companies (groups

of firefighters) from the closest available fire hall, three tender companies from the closest available fire hall and one command vehicle. If a second alarm is sent out, another engine company and a rescue company will respond.

Creston Fire Rescue Chief Mike Moore told town council earlier in the month that work is now being undertaken with the regional dispatch centre so that response to a fire in any area covered in the area will be coordinated as per the agreement.

“It will take a few months to make the necessary changes, but everything should be in place by the end of summer,” he said.

The Kitchener area is currently working toward a fire protection service. A referendum will be held in West Creston this fall during local government elections; a formal petition to extend fire protection to area residents passed by only a narrow margin in the winter.

“This is a good day for everyone involved,” Toyota said as he signed the Automatic Aid Fire Protection and Emergency Response Agreement on June 17. “It shows what can be accomplished when local governments co-operate in the best interests of taxpayers.”

Driving infractions keep Creston RCMP busy

Creston RCMP responded to 56 calls for service from June 16-22, Staff Sgt. Bob Gollan said on Monday.

June 16 •Sitting parked in an alley late at night with his vehicle running drew some unwanted attention to a male.

Police stopped to check on him and smelled liquor, but he refused to provide a breath sample. He was given a 90-day driving prohibition and the vehicle was impounded for 30 days. A small amount of cocaine was seized.

•A trailer hitch was stolen from a Highway 95 residence.

•A barbed wire fence on 44th Street was damaged by a vehicle

Employment Opportunity TERM CONTRACT PLANNER (1.5 Year Term) The Town of Creston is now accepting applications for a Term Contract Planner (1.5 year term) in the Development Services Department. After the 1.5 year term, this employment contract may be extended for an indefinite period of time.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS: • Bachelor’s degree or diploma in a field relevant to planning (i.e. geography, community planning, etc.) supplemented by urban/community planning courses; • Preferred 1 - 2 years’ experience in municipal planning; • Valid BC drivers licence; • Criminal Record Check and Drivers Abstract; • Willingness to relocate to Creston (must like small community lifestyle); • Two professional reference letters.

June 17 •A Riondel resident who reported a food poisoning case from a local restaurant was advised to contact a different agency.

•A person who complained about a BB gun being advertised on a local Internet site was informed it is not illegal to sell such an item, or advertise it.

•When police tracked down the driver who was reportedly responsible for a hit and run in a Cook Street parking lot, the elderly female hadn’t realized she had hit another vehicle.

•A Simon Road resident reported that she does not want to have contact with family members.

•Police attended an 11th Avenue North residence and assisted in mediation.

•A mobility scooter reported to be in a ditch on Highway 3A was gone when police arrived.

•Police were unable to determine the reason for a 911 call from a Quinton Road residence.

June 18 •An intoxicated female reported to be at the hospital

•A driver required hospital treatment after his vehicle collided with a deer on Highway 3.

•A ticket to a driver who sideswiped a vehicle on Highway 3 and then drove off has been revoked. The driver was found 2.5 kilometres away, sleeping. He was taken to hospital showing no signs of alcohol consumption, where it was determined he had suffered a minor stroke.

•A 10th Avenue North resident reported receiving harassing text messages about a tenant’s eviction.

•When police found a vehicle in a ditch on Highway 3 two males in attendance claimed to be hitchhikers. The vehicle had a stolen licence plate and police determined one of the males was the driver. The investigation continues.

•A third party report about a sexual assault named only the alleged perpetrator and not the victim. Police are investigating.

•Police were unable to locate a black Camaro reported to be speeding and squealing tires on Lister Road.

•An intoxicated male reported to be walking on Highway 21 with a shirt on his head was found sitting in the middle of the highway and transported to hospital.

June 21 •A person who breached a court order by attending a Simon Road residence was gone when police arrived.

Charges are pending.

•When a female reported that a male stole property, the male said he could not identify her as he has stolen from a lot of people.

•A report of about 60 shots fired near Highway 3/95 was reported to conservation officers as the issue is ongoing.

•A driver who collided with a power pole on Settlement Road was located. He said he fell asleep at the wheel and intended to report the incident the following morning. He was issued a ticket.

June 22 •Minor damage to a truck grill was reported on Highway 3 near Yahk after a bag of ice was thrown from an oncoming vehicle.

Council to decide on weed spraying later in the year

allowed its residents to stay.

“Our people were forcibly removed, never to return until today,” said Louie.

About a dozen rowers — mainly youth, the remainder of 23 who started rowing in March — including Louie and coaches Scott Bayley, Jesse Willicome and Dan Cameron started the trek on June 19, camping overnight along the

way. The journey took a total of 11 hours — seven on Thursday and four on Friday — and the participants had to dig deep to make it home, but it was worth it.

“We all earned it and worked so hard for it,” said team captain Shianne Gronen.

“There’s been great times, great laughter and great memories.”

No decision on how to proceed with a program to reduce weeds in Creston parks is likely until later in the year, Mayor Ron Toyota says.

Council was taken by surprise when a controversy arose over spraying in Centennial, Millennium and Burns parks in May, he said.

“The signage was inadequate and the contractor (from the Okanagan) has admitted that,” he said. “But the chemical used is approved by Health Canada, is used by many municipalities and school districts in B.C. and is considered harmless 15 minutes after application.”

At a special committee of the whole meeting on June 17, the contractor was in attendance, along with Karolyn Whitford, a mother of four who organized an online petition to ban the spraying of pesticides in Creston parks.

“There was a very good discussion that included Karolyn Whitford and the contractor, Steven Boltby,” Toyota said. “I was impressed with Karolyn’s research.”

A mother of four who organizes local protests against Monsanto, Whitford said she would not allow her children to play in parks where chemicals are sprayed, including the Rotary Splash Playground in Centennial Park. She specifically objected to the use of Nufarm Trillion Turf Herbicide, which contains 2,4-D, saying it is an ingredient in Agent Orange.

Toyota said there were no further plans to spray local parks this year, so there is no rush to address the issue.

“Council has adequate time to gather information and get direction from our taxpayers before next spring, so it will be able to make an informed decision about how to proceed at a later date,” he said.

•Also at Tuesday’s special committee of the whole meeting, Council agreed to proceed with staff recommendations to change the development cost charge bylaw.

An amendment will be introduced at a future meeting to increase cost charges and designate the entire town, not just specific areas. The process will include further opportunity for residents to comment.

It’s a reasonable question.

But, no risk, no reward and all. Still, do we have to destroy yet another part of our environment so that a privileged few can make the weekly drive to participate in extreme sports?

Aren’t there already enough ski hills on which one can get injured or killed? And we really need another golf course in which the 19th hole is really the ultimate goal?

The truth — and it is so obvious that Ralph doesn’t hammer away at it in his 10-minute video — is that this spectacular piece of wilderness is home to other animal species that don’t get along particularly well when placed cheek to jowl alongside Homo sapiens. They inevitably get the short end of the stick in a scenario in which the stick is so diminished in size as to be almost nonexistent. At least in areas in the southern quarter of the country.

Even if you are of the George Carlin school that says, “I don’t want to hear about any human disaster on the news unless it involves a million dead people,” you might be well entertained at the thought of a badly planned and deliciously ironic ski town being buried in an avalanche. But really, do we need to devastate Jumbo just because it might provide the occasional juicy news story?

Cultivate and encourage generosity

The second of 10 precepts that define thoughts, words and actions teaches us to refrain from stealing and expresses the Zen practitioner’s commitment to live from a generous heart rather than from self-centeredness. At a personal level, stealing harms the one who steals; on a community level, stealing harms or even destroys community trust.

Westerners might equate this precept with "thou shalt not steal" from the Ten Commandments, but the second precept is not a commandment, and it is not understood in that way. Rather, the precepts describe activities of wisdom and compassion. They encourage us to evaluate our motivations and notice how our actions affect others.

To practice the second precept is to mindfully attend to our lives.

Paying attention, we realize that not taking what belongs to another is about more than respecting another ’s personal property.

Refraining from stealing is a way to practice generosity. We don’t think, “What should I not take?” We do think, “What can I give? Someone else might need that old coat I haven’t worn for a year.” Then we take it to Gleaners. “And what about that can of corn that has been

sitting in my cupboard for six months?” Take it to the food bank.

To practice the precepts is to go beyond thinking of them as prohibitions.

Most of us don’t think of ourselves as thieves. We don’t rob banks or steal cars or lift mascara from the local corner store. But it doesn’t require thievery to break this precept. If we look closely at our lives we can see that taking — things, time, even attention — occurs all the time. Anytime we take something without another person’s awareness, explicit consent or direct offer, we are taking something that has not been given, and we break trust in the relationship. This precept challenges our sense of separateness and points directly to the pain of isolation.

When we feel separate, we hurt, and out of that hurt, we crave and grasp and, yes, steal.

While we may not take directly, with our own hands, we rarely pay attention to the causes and conditions that have given us what is ours. Going beyond not taking what isn’t given, we can notice the impact that our ownership has on others and widen our view to include the people, animals and resources contributing to all that we have. Treading lightly on the planet — taking less, rather than more — is a remarkably spiritual act. This quiet power of consuming less is a profound statement of our care and concern.

The ultimate meaning of the precept of not stealing is that, moment by moment, everything is completely given. Our Earth doesn’t hold back.

It never has. We are swimming in a ocean of beneficence and bounty. The gate is open. From this place, the temptation to steal is laughable. We have everything we need to enjoy our lives completely.

Suggested practice: For the next two weeks notice what you own and reflect on whether or not you really need that object. If you don’t, is there someone who does?

Patients need to stand up for their rights

case. Practitioners in the public service are not allowed to discriminate and refuse service according to their whims, although they do as long as they can get away with their avaricious practice.

The final step is to publicize the outrage you were submitted to: Submit your case to Go Public at www.cbc.ca and other interested programs, such as Marketplace. And yes, write a letter to the editor.

Good luck, and don’t give up standing up for your rights and dignity, and at least make it more difficult for mistreatment to continue by supposedly public practitioners!

To the editor: After my letter concerning dental (mis)treatment was published (“Patient Rejected by ‘Avaricious’ Dentist”, May 29), I have had many calls and conversations indicating similar experiences: people refused services because they did not have a dental plan, others let go because they were reluctant to take X-rays, others refused service because they did not want cosmetic work.

The despairing question was, “What can we do?”

I suggest the following: First, send a report to the College of Dental Surgeons of British Columbia.

In my case, it did not do any good as the dentist in question replied with a list of legitimate sounding recommendations, which they accepted. I could not prove that this was not the way it was. However, if they receive enough letters about a particular malefactor, even they will eventually have to pay attention.

When this does not net results, report this to the federal government at the Canadian Human Rights Tribunal. Follow this with a similar file to the provincial BC Human Rights Tribunal.

‘Depraved minds’ opposing TWU ethics To the Editor: Our provincial lawyers are trying to stop Trinity Western University from having a law school because of its adherence to Christian ethics.

In 2001, the former BC College of Teachers tried to stop TWU from graduating teachers. It fought TWU all way to the Supreme Court of Canada, which ruled in favour of TWU. A lesbian lawyer, Barbara Findlay, used historic rhetoric with great passion to argue about the injustices suf-

fered by lesbians and gays, and received a standing ovation by the majority of lawyers. TWU was condemned by history unrelated to it.

Unbelievably, 77 per cent — 3,210 lawyers — agreed and voted against TWU. The Law Society of Upper Canada and the Nova Scotia Barristers Society have refused to endorse TWU as long as it has the Christian covenant that students and staff sign, which forbids sex outside of heterosexual marriage.

TWU president Bob Kuhn asked that the religious freedom in Canada should include all universities.

The 2013 Canadian university report in the Globe and Mail awarded TWU an A+ in quality of teaching.

This was the seventh consecutive year it received A+. This has never been achieved by any other Canadian university. TWU also received an A+ for campus atmosphere and students/faculty interaction. Also, the students volunteered over 13,000 hours yearly at 12 outreach organizations. No wonder the graduates are sought after by employers! Only depraved minds can attack such a fine university.

In the meeting, Victoria lawyer Michael Mulligan told the crowd, “If we do not continue to stand up against ignorance and bigotry, they will take us back & the historical wrongs will be repeated.” In other words, that is his and the majority’s denouncement of Christians.

The lesson to be learned is: Be a Christian at home and inside church, but to the outsiders do not use “Christian” if you are interested in bringing the outsiders into your fold.

From here on, a high clearance vehicle (or mountain bike) is necessary to avoid bottoming out on some of the bumps in the road. In places, the road twists about but generally heads southerly for several kilometres.

One split has a Lady’s Slipper Trail directional sign. At close to kilometre 5, the road swings easterly reaching kilometre 6 about where there is a short twoended pullout on the right and then the Lady’s Slipper Trail Head sign on the left.

The trail, in places, is steep (not extremely) and may have some loose sticks or small, loose rock on it, but it is not at all rocky. Excepting for several flatter sections at some spectacular viewpoints (which you won’t want to miss), the trail climbs steadily to the top. Here the view is not as good as at the several locations along the upper portion of the trail, but you will find a very park-like lunch setting and, if you visit in spring or early summer, lots of flowers. During mid-May of this year I saw the most flowers on top that I have ever seen. The top had snow patches of spring beauty interspersed with yellow glacier lilies. This spot is worth visiting spring, summer and fall and, if you are really ambitious, Ed McMackin in winter. Between 2003 and 2007 there were an average of over 50 deaths and 244 hospitalizations from drowning across BC. 30 of those deaths and 107 of those injury hospitalizations were children.

More children die from injuries than all other causes.

It’s that time of year when female turtles begin their trek from ponds and slow-moving rivers to find a place to lay their eggs.

From the end of May through June, females are looking for an ideal location to dig their nest and will often travel very long distances away from the water and even cross roads.

Gravel roadsides with south-facing slopes and very little vegetation provide ideal nesting habitat, but are not very safe for turtles. Road mortality is a major threat to the survival our native western painted turtle populations. Female turtles will return to the same nesting area for many years, so it is important for nesting habitat to be located in safe areas where their risk from mortality and disturbance is low.

With financial support from the Fish and Wildlife Compensation Program (Columbia), the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure, and the Creston Valley Wildlife Management Area, turtle nest habitat is being enhanced along West Creston Road.

Vast Resource Solutions Inc. is working with local volunteers, including the Royal Canadian Army Cadets, to construct gravel nesting beds away from the roadsides. The team will also be hand pulling invasive plants in these areas in order to suppress establishment in these sandy beds. Because turtles will continue to nest in areas where they did in previous years, fencing is being installed to interrupt this movement pattern and direct them to the new nesting areas.

When you’re driving during the nesting season, make sure to watch for turtles crossing the road, particularly on warm nights around late afternoon and early evening. If you see a turtle at risk of being run over, you can help it cross the road, but make sure you consider the following: •do not put anyone in danger, particularly other people using the roadway; •place the turtle in the direction it was already going; •place the turtle close to where you found it; •when helping a turtle cross the road, handle it gently avoiding its claws and mouth; and •wash your hands afterwards.

If you see a turtle crossing a road that is not very busy, and at low risk of being killed, it is best to leave the turtle because excessive handling of animals can be very stressful and may disrupt their normal activities.

to keep your pets on leash to prevent them from harassing turtles and potentially interrupting their nesting activity. If you’re out enjoying the weather or walking your pet, watch for small depressions in sandy, gravel areas as this may be a turtle nest.

Eggs hatch in October and hatchlings do not emerge until the following spring.

What this means is that disturbing the nests may harm the eggs or the hatchlings.

Cook up some Canada Day fun

CANADA DAY

As the second-largest country in the world, Canada has much to celebrate. Each and every year, Canadians gather to commemorate Canada Day on July 1. Frequently called Canada’s birthday, Canada Day, previously known as Dominion Day, marks the joining of the Province of Canada, Nova Scotia and New Brunswick on July 1, 1867. It wasn’t until July 1, 1917 that the first official Canada Day celebration was held to mark this day of independence.

Offices, banks, schools, and many businesses are closed on Canada Day. Some stores may remain open to cater to bargain-hunting Canada Day shoppers.

Should an American visit Canada on Canada Day, he or she might mistake it for America’s own Independence Day. Celebrations of both holidays are similar, with parades, fireworks, concerts, and special outdoor events. Friends and families gather for barbecues and pool parties while the red-and-white flag of the country flies in the breeze.

Though the celebrations are similar, Canadians can add their own measure of gusto to Canada Day parties and gatherings with foods that are inspired

by Canada. Think about serving these culinary delights at the next Canada Day celebration. * Classic Quebec Poutine: The traditional poutine is served with a pile of crispy french fries topped with a handful of cheddar curds and a

chicken- or veal-based gravy. The french fries can be made from Prince Edward Island potatoes, while cheese curds traditionally are made from the Frommage Beaucronne brand. This comfort food can be enjoyed by children and adults alike and served as an appetizer before more substantial fare is served. * Maple candies: Maple syrup is exported from the country, and a maple leaf adorns the national flag. Celebrants can pay homage to the maple tree by serving foods that feature maple syrup in some way. Mix several cups of maple syrup with 1/3 cup butter and a teaspoon of lemon extract. Bring to a boil until a candy thermometer reads 233 F, roughly 111 C. Allow to cool a few minutes and pour into candy moulds. Let cool and harden, then enjoy. * Moose burgers: Rather than cooking beef or bison burgers, opt for moose meat.

Moose are the largest members of the deer family, and this wild game can be an alternative to the standard meats. Moose meat is a lean source of protein and has less than one gram of total fat per serving. Ground moose meat can be used to form burgers cooked over the grill. * Salmon specialities: For a different take on barbecue, try grilled salmon harvested from waters in British Columbia. Salmon is a heart-healthy food rich in omega-3 fatty acids, which also promote brain health. Maple-crusted salmon may be a way to meld two Canadian flavours together in one meal.

From Dominion Day to Canada Day Every year Canadians celebrate Canada Day, or la fête du Canada, on July 1. But not everyone is aware of the interesting history behind the name of this national holiday.

As early as 1868, Canadians were encouraged to begin celebrating the anniversary of Confederation.

But the day did not become a statutory holiday until 1879, when it was officially proclaimed Dominion Day. Celebrations got off to a slow start, however. Many Canadians still felt a strong connection to the British Empire. Patriotic feeling focused on Victoria Day, observed in Canada since 1845, and Empire Day, the school day just before May 24. The first organized celebration of Dominion Day didn’t occur until 1917, the 50th anniversary of Canada’s founding. The second was held ten years later, on the Diamond Jubilee.

By 1980, however, Canadian patriotism had come into its

own. Dominion Day celebrations were occurring in cities across the nation. And the patriotic song “O Canada,” written a century before, at last became our official national anthem.

Two years later, in 1982, events occurred that marked a milestone for Canadians.

With the passing of the Constitution Act, Canada became an entirely independent nation. That same year, Dominion Day was officially renamed Canada Day. Canadians everywhere take time to celebrate this aptly named holiday. Indeed, this Canada Day, we have a lot to celebrate!

Fireworks have a colorful history

Independence Day celebrations are marked by many spectacles. But few can garner the “oohs and aahs” of a good fireworks display.

Summer is a time of year when the resonating booms and bright spills of color that dot the night sky are quite common.

Fireworks, which can be traced back thousands of years, have an interesting history.

Many historians believe fireworks originated in ancient China as early as 200 B.C. It is thought that early fireworks were not the gunpowder-filled explosives of today, but something made from bamboo, a material native to China. Chunks of bamboo, a thick, fast-growing grass, may have been tossed onto a fire as fuel. The rods would blacken, but eventually explode in the fire, causing a loud, frightening noise. This noise was a result of trapped air and sap inside of the bamboo rods heating and expanding until the bamboo exploded under the pressure. The exploding bamboo was used to ward off animals, other people and evil spirits.

Chinese alchemists eventually stumbled on a recipe for basic gunpowder, mixing together saltpeter (potassium nitrate, then a common kitchen seasoning), charcoal, sulfur, and other ingredients. This powder was packed inside of hollow bamboo rods to produce an even bigger bang. Soon paper tubes replaced the bamboo, and fireworks were used for more than just scaring away spirits, as they were routinely included in special celebrations and even deployed during military engagements.

Fireworks may have begun in China, but they were soon being used around the world.

Italians had been fascinated with fireworks ever since the explorer Marco Polo brought back firecrackers from Asia in 1292. During the Renaissance in Europe, the Italians began to develop fireworks into a true art form. Since this was a period of artistic creativity and expression, many new fireworks were created.

“Firemasters” were fireworks experts in medieval England. They worked with “green men,” who wore caps of leaves to protect themselves from raining sparks from the fireworks.

In 1758, the Jesuit missionary Pierre Nicolas le Cheron d’Incarville, living in Beijing, wrote to the Paris Academy of Sciences about the methods and composition of fireworks, including how to make many types of Chinese fireworks.

The world remains fascinated by fireworks even now. Fireworks displays have grown more elaborate over the years, requiring the skills of pyrotechnic experts, carpenters and digital sound masters. Various powders and chemicals mixed together produce a rainbow display of colors and aerial tricks that would likely have shocked the earliest firework creators.

Not forgetting its origins, China continues to produce and export more fireworks than any other country in the world. Safety experts recommend the public leave fireworks to the professionals and sit back and relax during aweinspiring pyrotechnic displays. As the United States and Canada prepare for their respective Independence Day celebrations, flashy fireworks displays are bound to be part of the festivities. TF146257

More than 650 collector and classic autos descended upon the PNE Fairgrounds this past weekend and another 150 went on the block, many surpassing their reserve bid limits. Speed TV’s Steve Magnante was on hand to move the auction along but the cars were the true stars.

African Children’s Choir offering concert in Crawford Bay AFRICAN CHILDREN’S CHOIR

The African Children’s Choir melts the hearts of audiences with their charming smiles, beautiful voices and lively African songs and dances.

The program — which runs 7 p.m. July 2 at Crawford Bay’s Kootenay Lake Community Church — features well-loved children’s songs, traditional spirituals and gospel favorites.

Concerts are free and open to all. A free-will offering is taken at the performance to support African Children’s Choir programs, such as education, care and relief and development programs.

Music for Life (the parent organization for the African Children’s Choir) works in seven African countries, Uganda, Kenya, Rwanda, Sudan, Nigeria, Ghana and South Africa. MFL has educated over 52,000 children and impacted the lives of over 100,000 people through its relief and development programs during its history. MFL purpose is to help create new leadership for tomorrow’s Africa by focusing on education.

The African Children’s Choir has had the privilege to perform before presidents, heads of state and, most recently, Queen Elizabeth II for her diamond jubilee. The choir has also had the honor of singing alongside artists such as Paul McCartney, Annie Lennox, Keith Urban, Mariah Carey, Michael W. Smith and other inspirational performers. The African Children’s Choir accompanied South African opera singer Pumeza Matshikiza on some tracks for her debut album, which was recorded at Abbey Road Studios in London.

The African Children’s Choir is a non-profit humanitarian and relief organization dedicated to helping Africa’s most vulnerable children today so they can help Africa tomorrow.

Creston Valley Art Walk and Galleries Tour returning for 18th season CRESTON VALLEY ART WALK

The Creston Valley Art Walk and Galleries Tour is returning for its 18th season. After a year in hiatus, the Art Walk is returning June 28 for a two-month run.

Over its 17-year run, the Creston Valley/East Shore Art Walk became too unwieldy, a victim of its own success. Often with over 60 venues and up to 80 artists, the Art Walk took three days to successfully complete. It was reluctantly decided that this was too large an event, so it was split in two — the Creston Valley and the East Shore of Kootenay Lake areas.

Last year, for the first time, the East Shore ran its own successful Kootenay Lake Art Connection, while Creston artists took a year off to regroup.

Launching a summer celebration to celebrate the work of local artists from Yahk and throughout the Creston Valley, Art Walk will run the entire summer from

June 28-Sept. 1. Art Walk supports professional artists and artisans working from either their own galleries or studios and links emerging artists who do not have their own venues with businesses interested in promoting local talent, and through this support these businesses all receive publicity.

Art tours throughout the entire Kootenay region continue to be a destination for the arts.

The vision of the Creston Art Walk is to continue to develop more awareness within the local community of the Creston Valley for a continued appreciation of the creative spirit behind original true art forms.

The Creston Valley Art Walk and Galleries Tour is divided into two easy to complete tours.

The gallery tour needs motor transportation but can be completed in a leisurely afternoon drive.

Why not start your tour at Yahk About Art, where Penny A.P. Anderson and invited art-

ists display a wide variety of fine art? The studio is about one kilometre south of the junction of Highways 3 and 95 on the banks of the Moyie River.

As you enter the valley from the east, you will find the always exciting Alfoldy Gallery, which features the watercolours, paper batiks, miniatures and cards of husband and wife artists Andy and Elaine Alfoldy.

These artists have been longtime supporters of Art Walk.

Also in Erickson is Bluemoon Galley on Haskins Road. This is the home gallery of Andrea Revoy, who produces a variety of, and often whimsical, clay sculptures. Her clay chickens have proven to be very popular with patrons of the arts.

A third gallery in the Erickson area is Jenny and Emmie’s Art Gallery on 33rd Street. This gallery features the oils, acrylics, and mixed media paintings of Jenny Steenkamp and Emmie Roelofse.

The Hirota Gallery also hosts the fibre art of Annie Miller.

On Cory Road in Wynndel is Mellowood Studio and Art Gallery where you can find the wonderful watercolors of Val van der Poel. Her studio is also part of the Kootenay Lake Art Connection, so be sure to pick up a brochure from her and continue your art exploration along the Kootenay Lake East Shore to Crawford Bay. The Art Walk section of this summer-long celebration of the arts, which features downtown businesses and galleries, will be featured in a later article in the Creston Valley Advance.

A colourful brochure listing all the artists and their venues, as well as a detailed map that locates studios, galleries and supporting business, is available at the Creston Valley Chamber of Commerce and all venues. This year, an added feature will be geo-mapping, and information is available at the chamber. Also at the chamber will be a video highlighting the art on display at various galleries and studios.

Whether you are just beginning your art journey, learning and appreciating art or a seasoned art connoisseur, you will find plenty for your individual tastes in the Creston Valley Art Walk and Galleries Tour.

From page 26 On 16th Street in Lister is Kootenay Meadows, where you can not only pick up some of their fresh, grass-based organic dairy products, including their famous handcrafted mountain cheese, but you may also find local artist Ute Bachinski hard at work on her latest pastel or mixed media creation.

Not far away on 37th Street is McDowell’s Hilltop Gallery, where you will not only get a fantastic view of the valley, but also the acrylic paintings or garden sculptures of James McDowell or the rustic birdhouses or mixed media art of Nora McDowell. Birds are ecstatic when they get to move into one of Nora’s creative birdhouses.

As you travel north out of Creston, you can visit three more galleries. On the northern edge of downtown is the Krazy Kat Lady Studio and Gallery, which exclusively exhibits the work of Margaux Allard. Whether you’re looking for acrylics, pencil art, jewellery, prints or cards a visit to this gallery is well worth your time.

Taking the Lower Wynndel Road will bring you to the Hirota Gallery on Indian Road. In this gallery are Eileen’s original mixed media paintings, prints and cards, and porcelain earrings along with Jackson’s wood-fired pottery.
