raduating from Alberni District Secondary School this year is like reading an unfinished story. “It’s like reading a book that everyone likes but when you get to the end the last few pages are missing,” ADSS Grade 12 student Ross Johnson said. “It’s a very good analogy.” Johnson was referring to the teachers’ strike, which effectively ended the school year on June 13. “It’s a very anticlimactic feeling. Everything ended so suddenly,” he said. “A few more weeks would have been nice.” More than 200 Grade 12 students are donning their red caps and gowns and walking the stage on Friday to receive their diplomas. Johnson, 18, and classmate Logan Jackson, 18, are the ADSS Class of 2014 valedictorian and MC respectively. The two were chosen after an election by the student body in the spring. Three people ran for valedictorian and three for MC. “I was excited when I found out I was chosen. I texted my brother in Vancouver, he texted me back saying “way to go bro,” said Jackson, who attended Redford and Eighth Avenue elementary schools and EJ Dunn Middle

School before ADSS. Jackson is used to being in the public eye and speaking to audiences. He’s been an ace news reporter with ABC News, the school’s news report in the mornings. “It’s along the lines with what I do so I’m comfortable...I thought I might as well (try),” Jackson said Being an MC is a big challenge but Jackson is up to the task. He stands more than six feet tall and is thickly built. But the gentle giant has an easy way about him, something that he says will serve him

well. “I want to keep things light, running smoothly and maybe even cracking a joke or two. “I’ve got a couple in mind—one about the mayor—but I have to get them approved first,” he said. Johnson’s first taste of public speaking came at the annual Totem basketball tournament in January when he ran as the rugby spirit contest candidate. He never spoke publicly much and being the valedictorian is a problem to be solved, something he’s liked

doing since childhood. “The day I made my speech to students at Totem I realized that I was confident and that I could do this,” he said. Johnson is a French Immersion student and attended Alberni Elementary and EJ Dunn before going to ADSS. A problem solver, Johnson is a deep thinker who sees meaning in being valedictorian below the surface of the issue, something he hopes to impart during his speech on grad night. “You’re trying to summarize 200

people’s experiences during their 13 years in school,” he said. “We’re lucky to be Canadian. We’re fortunate to have the educational opportunities that we do.” The pair knew each other in passing since Grade 9 and both list biology as their favourite course. Jackson lists Mr. McLaren as his favourite high school teacher. “He’d go off on these tangents about his life and life’s experiences but they were really interesting,” he said. Johnson enjoyed his

experience with most teachers, he said, but he lists Mr. Hall as his favourite. “He made biology fun. He made class fun.” The two have plans for post secondary studies. Jackson grew up wanting to be a helicopter pilot. But after graduation, he’ll be studying to be a nurse at Langara College in Vancouver. His mother Joanne works at West Coast General Hospital. He admits to being bitten by the journalism bug during his time with ABC News though. “I might

still pursue that in some form, although I don’t know what yet,” he said. “I really like the idea of doing voice animation too.” Johnson is Lower Mainland bound. He’ll be studying engineering at the University of British Columbia in September. “Engineering is about problem solving and I like problem solving. I always liked doing puzzles when I was a kid,” he said. Like other graduates who are leaving Port Alberni the two look forward to new destinations, new schools and new challenges. But they’ll miss some things about home. “I’ll miss my friends and how everyone is a fiveminute drive away. And I’ll miss the lake too,” he said. Jackson said he’ll miss the Valley’s air quality, as well as Harbour Quay,” he said. “I’d say I won’t miss the rain but Vancouver gets rain too.” Graduating from high school represents the culmination of change, Johnson said. “It’s all about how we have changed in the past 13 years of school,” he said. “We’ve taken on new responsibilities and we have fun in new ways now.” Jackson says he’s changed as well. “It’s been a long time since I played tag. A new agreement between the city and Industrial Heritage Society promises to increase ridership on the Alberni Pacific Railway and introduce vendors at the train

station. City economic development manager Pat Deakin announced the agreement at council’s June 23 meeting. Some of the initiatives include discounted rides ($33) for local residents and corporate packages

valued at $1,500. Also added is a frequent passenger punch-card where every fifth ride is free. “We hope this translates into more riders,” Deakin said. Commercial vendors will be allowed to set up inside the train station on lower Argyle Street for the

first time, Deakin said. Vendors will set up in the station’s main lobby, and will sell pop and jewelry items, he said. The vendors won’t interfere with sales of similar items at nearby businesses though. ‘We don’t want to step on toes,”

Deakin said. The move may result in permanent vendors at the station as of next summer. The PEAK radio will promote the new initiatives in exchange for a corporate pass. Nichelle Portrait Studio will provide photography services

to be used for promotional services for two family passes. Long term plans include changing the layout of the nonheritage section of McLean Mill—that being the visitors’ centre compound. One possible change being considered is

moving the restaurant to the exhibit space. As well, the IHS will review its 2007 strategic plan at the end of this season with an eye to developing a new one. McLean Mill is listed as a national historic site. reporter@albernivalleynews.com

A concrete block and two mounds of rubble are all that remains of the theatre and gymnasium of the old Alberni District Secondary School on Burde Street. Both buildings were levelled within the last month, School District 70 Secretary Treasurer Lindsay Cheetham said. The old administration building and the library are still standing. The demolition, which officials thought would be completed in May, is now slated to be finished by the end of July, Cheetham said. The work was originally scheduled to be finished by April but the demo was

The city has added another public beach to its waterfront. Port Alberni city councillors voted in favour of leasing beach front property with Imperial Oil at their June 23 meeting. The city will lease the former Esso property—located between the Harbour Quay Marina and Harbour Quay, right next to the public boat launch—for five years, for which the city will pay the oil giant $1 per year, Parks and Recreation manager Scott Kenny said. The lease has a clause in which each party has 30 days to opt out, he said. City crews will begin light cleanup of the site as well as building a $2,500 staircase that will lead down to the beach.

The property is still classified as a brownfield site because of contamination from its former life as a fuel depot, a report noted. The city retains the option of renewing the agreement after five years, he added. The company is still conducting a geo-technical survey of the site and has tubes sticking out of the ground as a result, Kenny said. If the city wants to undertake more detailed work on the site then a company representative must be present to inspect what is being brought there, he added. Kenny cautioned against long-term improvements to the property, but added that it has potential because the boat ramp could be improved and amenities could be added. reporter@albernivalleynews.com

The move is connected to the situation with the Bulldogs. “But we were looking at making organization changes before the Bulldogs requested a reduction,” parks and recreation manager Scott Kenny said. “I did say to council that we would be making changes at the facility.” No other staff were let go, Kenny said. The multiplex may be the same building it always has been, but the environment it operates is changing, he added. The Bulldogs don’t sell our regularly anymore; there are fewer groups using the facility; and new liquor laws will soon impact the facility. “There’ll still be programs at the facility but we needed to re-allocate our resources.” New sports facilities supervisor Steve Bilodeau will assume management of the Multiplex along with the Bob Dailey Stadium, Glenwood Centre and the sports fields. Paulson’s last project is to help with the ADSS Class

City councillors held a special meeting on June 23 to discuss their expenses and reimbursed costs. Councillors agreed that manager of corporate services Theresa Kingston bring back a revised council expense bylaw and policy for consideration and adoption this fall. Council expenses are guided by travel and credit card policies as well as a council expenses bylaw, Kingston said. While the documents provide direction there is a grey area that needs to be clarified, she added. Policy sets out that councillors can bill for expenses for business in town, out of town and representing council while in town. Suggested improvements include identifying and clarifying specific incidentals covered by the remuneration; paying for the cost of a standard single room; changing per diem to reflect meal costs; and identifying

specific expenses covered while attending official functions in the city. Councillors cited examples of some

annual functions they attend out of town that should be included as a regular function they attend. The issue of council

remuneration arose after the city’s audit committee last spring requested clarification about the grey areas. reporter@albernivalleynews.com

Reducing ice rental fees paid by the Alberni Valley Bulldogs to the city has claimed its first victim. Long-time Parks and Recreation programmer Ron Paulson has been let go from his position at the Alberni Valley Multiplex. His last day is June 27. “I never saw this coming; it caught us off guard. My family and I are still in shock,” Paulson said. “Things change and change is difficult but I have to move on now.” A letter to Paulson from the city noted that “forces beyond our control” forced management to reduce programs and services in the Parks, Recreation and Heritage department. “We inform you that your position as a regular parttime recreation programmer at the Multiplex has been eliminated,” the letter noted. On June 23, city council voted to finalize an agreement with the Bulldogs that would see their ice rental fees chopped in half for the next two years. The team currently pays $4,300 per month in rental costs and $1,000 per game for playoffs. The fee increases by two per cent every year. In the 2014-2015 season, the team will pay the city $2,203 instead of $4,405. In the 2015-2016 season the team see a two per cent increase and will

I don’t know what they’re going to do though.” A native of Edmonton, Alta, Paulson first came to Port Alberni as a member of a men’s hockey team from Prince George in 1974. He fell in love with the Valley after arriving and met a local girl named Beth whom he would marry. Paulson stayed in his newly adopted home playing hockey for the former Labatts Blues. Paulson helped with the Tall Ships festival as well as with the 2009 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge. Paulson said he’s going to take time driving to a family occasion in Alberta this summer to reflect on the experience and take stock of himself. “This is still sinking it and I’m not sure what I’m going to do but I’ll land on my feet. I’m a survivor,” he said.

The Alberni Clayoquot Regional District agricultural plan is taking another step forward. ACRD planning department staff met with Alberni Farmers Institute

officials about the plan at a meeting on April 24. Now they are advertising for someone to implement a new plan. “We want to talk a bit about the agricultural plan with the farmers institute and make sure we’re on track with them,” ACRD planner Mike Irg said back in April. Adopted in 2011, the 20-year plan describes the state of local agriculture. It

also reviews the type of agriculture in the area, resources use, capacity issues, soil and water content as well as regulation and policy issues that impact local agriculture. “We also want to try and identify areas where we feel there is an opportunity for growth,” Irg said. According to the report, Port Alberni has 7,702 hectares of land in the agricultural

land reserve, of which only 41 per cent is farmed; more than 90 per cent is used for livestock production or livestock feed; 239 hectares is used for vegetables, berries and grapes. There is a high demand for locally grown food, but only five to 11 per cent is grown locally, the report notes. The plan also notes that while production is down from historic

levels there are opportunities to market products to local consumers and to tourists. Water is available for distribution, and while the agricultural land is isolated in the Alberni Valley it’s an opportunity to raise disease-free products and preserve genetic integrity, according to the document. The plan also sets out 12 goals, among which are

improving marketing of Alberni Valley and its agricultural products, improved market access for local farmers, improve land base productivity and to increase availability of water for agriculture. There is a lot of land for instance that is currently used for haying and grazing that is capable of producing other crops if the right opportunity came along, Irg said. The meeting with the Farmers Institute was part of the first goal which is to improve the effectiveness of farm

and community organizations. ACRD officials attended the Islands Agricultural Show in Duncan in February as part of the initiative as well. A tale of two homes (and their tables and chairs)

ack in 1980, at the time when the Fir Park Village building was in the latest stages of its construction, Terry Whyte, its first administrator, and Walter Behn, president and founder of the board of directors, had embarked on another big project for the society: buying furniture in preparation to welcome the first group of residents to the new Intermediate Care Home. Within months, items for the residents’ rooms, such as accessories, appliances for lounges, kitchen, bath tubs, staff equipment, etc, gradually arrived and filled the empty building. Among those important pieces of equipment were the dining room tables and chairs. For more than two decades the sturdy chairs and tables saw many residents

using them daily at meal times and many visitors who joined the residents at dances and other social events. As time progressed, there was a need to replace many of those items with new furniture for the comfort of the 67-residents of the

home. And when Abbeyfield, a nonprofit home for independent seniors, which had no support or connection with any governmental agencies, was in the process of opening its doors to the community and welcome the first residents on Aug. 26,

2002, Fir Park Village donated a number of items to the home. These included tables and chairs. This welcoming addition to the seniors’ home was useful for the normal functioning of the place. “We were in the process of purchasing new furniture for the dining area at that

time”, says Donna Michaud, executive assistant for Fir Park Village/Echo Village and the foundation. “And the best place to give it to was to Abbeyfield,”, she added. But again, as time went on, the need to upgrade and improve the furniture of Abbeyfield was seen as a real need by the board, led by president Marlene Dietrich, who looked for means to finance improvements in the dining room furniture. They applied for a grant from the B.C. Abbeyfield Trust Society, which was soon approved. Those funds were

immediately utilized to reupholster every chair in the dining room area. This work is now gradually being completed by Wynans Furniture (five chairs at a time). Also, thanks to volunteers Phil Dietrich and Mel Brooks, all chairs and table legs have been refurbished. They sanded, stained and sprayed all the legs. This is the second major home improvement in Abbeyfield in the last two years. The first one was the expansion and total renovation of the dining room done as part of a major enhancement of that

area of the building, and made possible by the contributions from Royal Canadian Legion Br. 293 and funds from the legacy of late resident Wiets De Koning. Very soon the Abbeyfield dining room will be completed with “new” chairs and tables, thanks to the contribution of Fir Park Village and the BC Trust Society, and the various individuals, donors and volunteers who have made it possible. And from now on, it is expected to see those chairs and tables continuing being part of the seniors’ lives for decades to come.

Life includes a city beach A brief history of teacher demands The City of Port Alberni has picked up a bit more waterfront for a public beach. And while the agreement to lease the former Esso lands between the Harbour Quay Marina and boat launch will not appease those profoundly disappointed in recent land use decisions near Canal Beach, it is still a few metres of recreational waterfront. It is more than we had a week ago. It is time now to work with what we’ve been given. The Esso site is an historical respite, having been a public gathering place in the city’s century-old past. Canal Beach is a newer respite, and although it will remain solely on Lot C of the Plywood lands for now, there is room to grow. Has anyone supporting the development of Canal Beach approached the Tseshaht First Nation and asked their opinion on the plans? Much concentration has been paid to the right side of the beach, but what about to the left? The waterfront doesn’t stop at the unfinished pier. There is land stretching to Polly’s Point that has possibilities for recreational use, if the inclination is there. Let’s set aside the complaining and hard feelings for a little while, and see how we can create new partnerships within the situations we have been dealt with. Canal Beach will receive water, sewer and power as a result of the contract signed between the city and port authority on behalf of Alberni Engineering. Perhaps the company would be amenable to landscaping part of its property in keeping with the beach’s outdoors theme, or would consider a mural on the side of its building to cut down on the industrial look. Or contribute to resurfacing the pier. It’s time to work together instead of against each other.

ICTORIA – A few things have changed since the last all-out teacher strike in B.C. That was just two years ago, when the B.C. Teachers’ Federation was coming off its secondever voluntary agreement with a 16 per cent raise over five years and what the union termed an “enhanced” signing bonus of $4,000. Even with special teacher-only top-ups, BCTF members almost rejected the last of the government’s bigspending pre-Olympic labour deals signed in 2006. By 2012, outraged teachers were back on the legislature lawn, howling for another 16 per cent, with backup vocals provided as usual by HEU, CUPE, BCGEU and other public sector unions that settled for less. Teachers had just sailed through a

crippling global recession with a series of raises, but were oblivious to all that. Last week the protest venue switched to Vancouver, where both the crowd and the demands looked a bit thinner. The signing bonus target is up to $5,000, but the raise is a mere eight per cent over five years (compounded, for those who passed math), plus another huge basket of cash disguised as benefit improvements and so forth. Government negotiators put their total compensation demand at 14.5 per cent. One obvious dodge: they want the bottom two steps of the teacher salary grid dropped. That’s simply a raise for entry-level teachers. Admittedly those are rare creatures these days with shrinking enrolment and ironclad seniority rules that allow retired teachers to

monopolize substitute work. Something else that’s changed since 2012 is that the government has granted the BCTF’s wish to bargain directly with the province. The education ministry executed a takeover of the B.C. Public School Employers’ Association after last year’s election, and installed veteran industrial union negotiator Peter Cameron. He’s backed up by longtime labour specialist Lee Doney, whose task is to keep the teacher deal within Treasury Board limits that have defined all other public sector union settlements. Doney made it clear last week that no mediator is going to come in and “split the baby” as long as the BCTF position is so far beyond the current

compensation framework. Despite constant union complaints of low wages and deteriorating working conditions in B.C. schools, education grads remain lined up around the block hoping to get in. Why is that? For those who have been exposed to life outside school for a while, it’s fairly simple. The job market out here in the real world is tough. And here’s how the real world evaluates a teaching job. Start with 189 working days, each nine hours long as per the accepted definition, and the topheavy seniority list that places the average teacher salary at around $72,000 a year. That works out to $42.32 an hour, plus a suite of benefits that most private sector employees can only dream about, starting with three months of prime-time vacation. I am occasionally lectured by teachers that the job goes far beyond five hours in the classroom and four hours a day preparing and marking.

To the Editor, After his North American tour, Mayor John Douglas tell us of many communities that are spending big bucks “in order to regain access to the waterfront that was restricted to the public in previous years.” Clearly he and other relative newcomers would like to see all industry removed from our harbour in favour of housing and walkways. However, there’s another solution-relocation. The mayor would find what he desires in other cities like Victoria and Nanaimo, to say nothing of Parksville and Qualicum where he could observe seals, sea lions, whales, and shore birds whilst dipping his toes in clear saltwater. Indeed in those locales he would avoid all the driftwood, oil, and contaminated soil at Canal Beach and adjacent lots. Mulcair can’t make up mind

To the Editor, Thomas Mulcair, Federal NDP opposition leader wants to someday become the Prime Minister of Canada, but seems to forget that western Canada is also in Canada. Mulcair says, “Allowing super tankers into the Douglas Channel is madness” when it comes to decision

making in western Canada. Mulcair says, “West east pipeline, pro business, common sense solution, that will create jobs and boost the country energy solutions.” It’s a definite set of double standards; he lives in Quebec and what would a pipeline do for Quebec and Quebec only. He wants the

pipeline to run from Alberta and end at a Montreal refinery. Then shipments can be made by use of the St. Lawrence River, which would require the use of super tankers, which is not madness in Quebec because the Enbridge pipeline is estimated to bring in $80 billion in tax revenue, via government. If Mulcair lived in

B.C., once again his opinions would be reversed. The sad part to all of this, is that Mulcair is paid a taxpayer funded salary of $229,000 per year, for this very poor performance of opinions. Unbelievable, but then what do you expect from a NDP’er? Joe Sawchuk, Duncan

Stowe, Vermont – Despite the relatively early call time, a group of almost 100 Mazda Miata/MX-5 drivers/ passengers gathers for the morning’s meeting. The weather is looking favourable even though the a.m. envelops the crowd with its chilliness. It’s not raining though. That’s a good sign. Tour organizer and former Trillium Miata Club president, Gary Svoboda, talks

about the day’s journey, addresses some basic housekeeping rules, makes some jokes and engages in witty banter with a group of excited Miata enthusiasts. Everyone is ready to hit the roads of Vermont in their tiny, drop top, two-doors. Everything from first generations Miatas, to the latest and greatest rear-wheel drive roadsters line the gravel parking lot of our home base, also known as the Stowehof Inn. Stowe, VT’s claim to fame is as a ski destination. Currently, its claim to fame is the 46 Mazdas that drove in from Ontario and are congregating for their annual tour. Each May long weekend, a group of club members look forward to the event. It’s been going for over 20 years and hasn’t disappointed. The crowd gets rowdier by the minute so go-time is just around the corner. The meeting wraps up; we branch into our respective groups and fire up the engines.

As honorary members for the event, my co-pilot – aka my mother Zsuzsanna Straub – and I get behind the wheel of our MX-5. Within moments, we’re topless. The car. Not us! Seven vehicles comprise a group, including a leader and a sweeper. We’re comfortably nestled in the bosom of the pack. Our job is to enjoy ourselves, as well as give the MX-5 a little bit of room to romp free. It’s hard not to smile on the undulating roads of Vermont, which are lined with trees, houses, fields and topped off with a bovine scent! Then there is what is called “The Notch.” A mountain road where emaciated limbs of indigenous trees look like they’re reaching out and trying to touch the cars. Boulders are scattered and the path is paved around it. The intermittent obstacles would likely be the outcome of two Greek gods having a rock fight. You would have to have superhuman strength to

move them. The sinuous and slender road is a hoot to drive through especially with no one in front of you. The occasional crackling on the CB radios frequently is overpowered by instructions from the leader. Like a mother duck summoning her young, we followed in order. We stuck together and took in some breathtaking scenery of New England. Scenery aside, what was the most interesting to breathe in was the enthusiasm and energy of the Miata owners. Liz Burns has “Miatatude” stickered across her windshield. Miata earrings dangle from her ears as she professes her love of her emerald beauty. Another owner decided to turn his conventional doors into ones that open up not out. At breakfast, lunch and dinner, they regale each other with stories of other events they’ve been on. Outbursts of laughter perk up the ears of bystanders; making them wish they were at that table reliving the memories.

MONTY CECIL MCLEOD

JULY 9, 1953 - JUNE 16, 2014

Passed away after a valiant 3-year battle with multiple myeloma cancer. Monty had a great sense of humor which got him through many painful treatments. He and Cindy always had the doctors and nurses in stitches (pun intended). Monty was born and raised in Port Alberni and moved to Qualicum in 2011 to live in his dream home which he built with his wife Cindy. Monty worked at the APD Mill for 29 years until his retirement in 2009. Monty loved life and lived it to the fullest. Some of his greatest memories involved his summers on Sproat Lake and cruising in his classic cars. Monty was predeceased by his dad, Cecil Mcleod (1981) and his mother Eva Mcleod (1987). Monty is survived by his devoted wife Cindy, step-son Cole, sisters Connie (Frank), Malonie (Joe), brothers Wayne (Cristina), Dannie, mother-in-law Marjorie and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. A celebration of life will be held on July 6, 2014 at the Alberni Valley Resque Squad Hall from 1:00pm to 5:00pm. You were sick and tired and we all knew, that God would soon come to take you. You fought so hard, so very long, but through the pain, you stayed strong.

I canâ€™t help but feel defeated, or even maybe a little cheated. $ut how very selĆ‚sh would I be, to hope and pray you could stay with me.

We all knew there would come a day, when God would come to carry you away. It doesnâ€™t make it easier to say goodbye, and I try so hard not to cry.

Alberni Valley Bulldogs’ athletic therapist and equipment manager James McDonald is headed to the Dub. The Saskatoon Blades of the Western Hockey League hired McDonald as their new athletic therapist last week. McDonald replaces Steve ‘Hilty’ Hildebrand, who was promoted to the Blades’ assistant coach. “James comes highly recommended,” Hildebrand said. “He’s been working the craft for the last number of years including working at the World Junior A Challenge last year. He’s excited, we’re excited to have him and I know it will be a great fit.”

Little wins yet another title

Alberni Valley golfer Jackie Little won both the Mid-Master and Senior Women’s Golf Championships in Vernon last weekend. It was Little’s fourth senior women’s title. Little closed out the championships at the Vernon Golf and Country Club shooting 78-7378 for a final of plus-7 on the 5,919-yard, par-74 course with a comfortable six-stroke lead. “The golf course was in fabulous shape, the greens were beautiful. And tricky,” said Little. Four bogeys on the back nine and tricky greens made less of an impact after Little shot a championship-best 73 on the second day of the tournament.

Rugby Canada star Phil Mack and his Vancouver Island Thunder youth organization held a skills camp for Nuuchah-nulth youth at the Port Alberni Black Sheep facility. Mack, a member of Toquaht First Nation, recently completed a gruelling season with the national Rugby Sevens squad. “We played in Las Vegas in February, then we were in New Zealand, Hong Kong and Japan. Then we had the Glasgow Sevens and wrapped it up in London,” he said. For those whose only impression of rugby is the traditional 15-a-side game, Rugby Sevens is a relatively new innovation. It’s a short, 14-minute game and the focus

is on speed, Mack explained. “You’re covering a lot more ground and you’re getting rid of a lot of the big guys up front, so you’re left with more speedy and agile players. It’s sort of like three-on-three hockey on the same sized rink.” Rugby Sevens will be included in the

2016 Olympics for the first time. Mack, who is a nephew of the late Toquaht Tyee Ha’wilth Bert Mack, serves as head coach of the Thunder, when available. The team is currently focused on putting together a Girls U-18 squad and Boys U-16 for the upcoming Victoria International Youth

Sevens in July, but the overall goal is to attract more First Nations youth to the sport. “I grew up in Victoria ‘til Grade 4, then we moved up to Whitehorse, Yukon. My mother got a teaching job up there. We came back when I was in Grade 9, and that’s when I started playing rugby.” Mack said he played all the usual youth sports, but rugby struck a chord within him. “Once I started playing rugby, I realized I really enjoyed the camaraderie behind it, and I liked the fact that there is a lot more respect paid to officials and coaches and opposition than in a lot of other sports.” One of the messages he likes to bring to First Nations youth is the inclusiveness of the sport. Alberni Valley Minor Softball will host the U16 ‘C’ girls’ provincial championships July 4–6 at Echo Minor Fields. The organization has gained a reputation for seamlessly

running provincial championships and this year is no different. Last year Port Alberni hosted the U16 ‘B’ provincials, and the ‘C’ provincials were held here three years ago, tournament director Cal Davies

said. The U16 C Blazers have a home berth in the championship which will see 16 teams from all over B.C. compete in a round robin format. Games are free for the public to come out and watch. The schedule will be released next

On Saturday, organizers of the camp wrapped up the session early so everyone could attend the final of the B.C. High School Girls Rugby Championship, which was held at Alberni District Secondary School. The game featured two Thunder players, Samantha Jack (Elgin Park) and Taya Gagnon (Vanier), playing on opposing

teams. Representing Tseshaht First Nation, John Gomez welcomed participants to the camp, and urged the young athletes to adopt the sport. “Rugby kept me out of trouble when I was in high school,” he added. Mark Bryant, president of BC Rugby News, has taken an active role in organizing and promoting the Vancouver Island Thunder. “We’re just starting this year, so we’re trying to identify aboriginal talent in rugby,” he said. “The focus is the Victoria International Sevens tournament. “We’re travelling the Island to find players to be on the teams. Celebrate in the ‘Quay of Sea’ on July 1 Music will fill the harbour on Tuesday, July 1 and it will all be in the Quay of Sea. Sixteen musical acts will take the stage on Canada Day at Harbour Quay for the inaugural “Quay of Sea” concert.Music kicks off at 12:30 p.m. when Marim Bam Buzz will warm up the crowd with their infectious, Caribbean

sound. Shortly after, at 1 p.m., the main stage will start the program with an eclectic, varied group of musicians representing a range of musical styles – from traditional folk/roots music, to contemporary jazz, blues, old-time and good old-fashioned rock and roll. Groups will be playing

continuously throughout the day from 1—9 p.m. and participants and attendees are encouraged to bring down low-backed lawn chairs or other seating options as the main viewing area will be the enclosed Spirit Square quadrant. The main stage will be centered under the entrance to Spirit Square. The talent pool is

amazing, says one of the concert organizers, Glen Walushka: “A great representation of the deep and varied musical roots of the Alberni Valley.” This year, the festival is free for all attendees and music enthusiasts. Parking for festival guests is encouraged behind Port Boat House, behind the Carmoor Building at

In 2011, the last time PPDS hosted the North Island Zone Drama Festival, Aspinall was nominated for and received the prestigious Donna Lamb Award in recognition of her valuable contributions to community theatre. We will remember

Pam very fondly. Details of memorial arrangements will be posted when we know more. Aspinall was involved with Portal Players Dramatic Society for a long time and devoted herself in a deep way to many aspects of theatre and the performing arts. Also, she was particularly committed to children and youth. Aspinall recognized and celebrated the importance of people of all ages in the arts.

Fringe mixes local and visiting actors From / A24 He finally receives a contract for his book from a small editor. After signing of the contract, the writer’s ego starts to inflate disproportionately and the lives of the couple change forever. The husband’s arrogance drives his wife to solitude and the play ends in an unexpected way. It was a little time of laughter and giggles with a surprising ending. Zelda: The Last Flapper with Debra Hamilton was another captivating monologue, drawing us into the harsh world of schizophrenia. The play was about the sad story of the famous Zelda Fitzgerald, wife of famed author F. Scott Fitzgerald, coming to terms—in her last days—with the angst in her life. We witnessed flashes of her tormented and sometimes happy life; she shared with her audience her desires and her fears; she cried for her long gone husband’s love, her lost hopes and

aspirations. A moving Zelda was well played by Debra Hamilton. The Hatter. In this play, Andrew Wade is absolutely flabbergasting. Breathtaking long sentences filled with illogical reflections that are, finally, perfectly plausible. He manipulates words and the absurd in a skilful way. His monologue reminds me the writings of the famous Boris Vian, a master of the absurd. From the start, we were invited to a tea party (with real tea, please) down the rabbit hole by this mad hatter. Wade brought us in his magical, odd and tormented world with brilliance. Interacting a lot with his public and making them drink tea and sing silly songs, this hour was full of laugher. This is an absolute must to see if Andrew Wade performs again on the island. I think this young actor is a future great star. Thank you Gwynne Hunt to have brought the Fringe Festival to us one more time.
