The True North Fraser Bluegrass Festival is back this Labour Day weekend.
Last year, almost 80,000 people clicked on the Tourism Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows website www.mapleridge-pittmeadows.com. "So far, we're up 35 per cent for our website visits," said tourism's executive-director Kristina Gervais. People are clicking (last year, more than 300,000 page views and 2,500 Facebook friends) before jumping into the car and coming out to enjoy the uncrowded trails, mountains, lakes and streams. Two big anniversaries are also coming up this year bringing back people to their home stomping grounds. The City of Pitt Meadows celebrates its centennial while the District of Maple Ridge in September is marking its 140th birthday. "This is the second year we're going to have the True North Blue Grass Festival," said Gervais. That attracts people from the northwest U.S., and takes place August 29 - 31 in the Albion Fairgrounds. Meanwhile, the 14th annual Maple Ridge Caribbean Festival on July 12-13 in Memorial Peace Park in Maple Ridge also draws people from afar. Music on the Wharf (Port Haney Wharf at the bottom of 224th Street) takes place two Monday evenings on July 14 and 28 while Bard on the Bandstand (Memorial Peace Park) runs July 17 to 19 in Pitt Meadows and July 24 to 26 in Maple Ridge.

Canoes can be rented at Alouette Lake, located in Golden Ears Provincial Park This year is expected to be a banner year for the Fraser River sockeye run, so Tourism Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows wants to highlight the local fishing opportunities. Pitt Lake is good for catching cutthroat trout while nearby Rolley Lake Provincial Park just across the border in Mission offers trout fishing. Alouette Lake also welcomes fishermen. Gervais said the self-guided Circle Farm Tours, where people use maps to guide them on scenic tours of local farms, continue to draw in people looking for leisurely drives where they can they can stop in and sample local food such as Hopcott Premium Meats or Golden Ears Cheesecrafters. If you're enjoying the local produce, (Haney Farmers Market sells local eats every Saturday morning, also in Memorial Peace Park), the myriad of trails throughout Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows (Kanaka Creek Regional Park, Metro Vancouver greenways, Golden Ears Provincial Park) should make it easy to burn off a few calories.
And don't forget Country Fest at the Albion fairgrounds. The free event takes place July 26 and 27 and provides a meeting place for city folk and country folk. With an operation base now at the Pitt Meadows airport, Sky Helicopters is the latest aviation company to offer sightseeing flights. The company will go to venues and offer people quick tours and even caters to weddings, so the happy couple can drop in out of the sky on the big day or fly away to a far off mountain peak for special wedding photos. When it comes to the outdoors, Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows offer uncrowded options to the activities in the Vancouver area. Dozens of kilometres of peaceful cycling paths can be enjoyed along the Alouette, Fraser or Pitt river dikes. If not cycling how about zipping through the treetops? WildPlay Element Park on Fern Crescent at the start of the twisty road that leads to Golden Ears Provincial Park, one of B.C.'s busiest parks, is offering rope challenges in the trees, with something geared for every age. But this is Maple Ridge, so why not try horseback riding? City slickers can sign up for trail rides with Equutrails based out of Maple Ridge. Raw rookies or experienced old hands can go out for as little as an hour or a full day. The Leghorn Ranch on Old Dewdney Trunk Road in Pitt Meadows offers the same thing

YOU CAN DO IT ALL HERE Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows have much to offer, as this guide will outline – fishing, festivals and craft beer, gaming, golf and bluegrass. There are attractions like the Meadows Corn Maze and WildPlay treetop course. The ACT has no shortage of events to take in, and Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows, together, offer a variety of golf courses to choose from. But much of what makes the two communities special, what makes people move here or keep coming back, are their natural surroundings. Camping in Golden Ears Provincial Park is not only close to home for many, but it is loaded with trails for hiking and horseback riding. The water at Alouette Lake is as cold and clear as any, and the picnic area is perfect for day trips, birthday BBQs and family get-togethers. The municipal dikes here offer not only views of the majestic Golden Ears mountains, but wildlife, from eagles and hawks, herons and cranes, all set amongst acres and acres of farmland and following the path of the Alouette River.
There are more trails in the Malcom Knapp UBC Research Forest, and amongst water falls at Cliff Park and throughout Kanaka Creek Regional Park. Those who live here know these trails well, because they are all so close to home; what better than a Saturday morning walk in the woods? The two communities host many special events throughout the year, as well - CountryFest, Pitt Meadows Day and Ghost Ridge are among the best. But perhaps best of all, you’ll find good community-minded people who care about one another and provide good schools for our children, vibrant churches, and facilities so that people of all ages can enjoy sports and the arts. $10 MILLION UPGRADE FOR GAMING CENTRE Maple Ridge will take its Chances. Anyone who has visited the Chances Community Gaming Centre in Maple Ridge, located on the main drag that is the Lougheed Highway, will find operator Great Canadian hit a jackpot of upgrades with its new facility. Andy LaCroix, general manager of Chances, says the new building has been a game-changer. "It's busier, and we have much more to offer," he said. "Everyone enjoys it more." Chances blends a lot of gaming and entertainment under one vaulted ceiling. There are 175 slot machines and 192 seats for bingo – both electronic and paper. There is also a sports book for those who want to buy a ticket on the ponies. The Well is a restaurant and entertainment venue. It provides a stage that has already
helped to launch the careers of local musical performers, including country talent Ray Gibson. It has also hosted some longtime favourites, like cover talent Nearly Neil. It offers a big screen where friends can meet to watch televised sporting events, like MMA matches. Including the patio area that adjoins the restaurant, up to 600 people can be accommodated. It's a big, attractive, $10 million building at a key intersection in the city, and there are more new visitors and more walk-in traffic, said LaCroix. People familiar with Great Canadian Gaming Corporation's other facilities will recognize the same quality and class they find in such venues as the River Rock Casino, Hard Rock Casino and Fraser Downs Racetrack and Casino. locations in B.C., Ontario, Nova Scotia and Washington State. There is also a complimentary multifunctional meeting place and board room, and Rotary clubs and other local organizations are taking advantage of the space. The facility employs 86 people, which is 30 more than the old site on 224th Street. And, the community gets to share in a significant portion of the revenue. The Maple Ridge municipal government will receive a 10 per cent share of the net income from the slot machines at Chances. Last year that was almost $1 million, used for downtown improvements and infrastructure. Chances Maple Ridge is located at 22710 Lougheed Highway.

CORN MAZE AND FARM OFFER "FUN IN THE COUNTRY" It is billed as "ear-resistable family fun." A corny line to be sure, and appropriate for Meadows Maze, constructed in a field of almost a million stalks of corn. Hopcott Farms of Pitt Meadows builds the award-winning maze, which is one of the largest of its kind in the entire Pacific Northwest. The maze will open on Aug. 9, and is accepting group bookings and field trip reservations. Each year a new maze is created, and this year's is 6.3 km long. Its design is sophisticated, utilizing a Global Positioning System, taking up most of a 17-acre field, and the pathways are cut through a dense forest of high corn stalks. There is more than just a maze to attract guests, and other features include a pet-
ting zoo, bee observatory and a goat climb dubbed the "Lions Goat Bridge." Visitors can save their feet with a "train" ride, or take a ride on a hay wagon. New for the summer of 2014 will be a Birds of Prey exhibit, which is still in the works. The educational program will feature falcons, which are being used at Pitt Meadows blueberry farms to hunt and scare away the smaller birds that eat berry crops. There's lots of things for kids to do – try carpet bowling, ride on bouncy horses, go down the 40-foot tube slide, or decorate cutout pigs with erasable markers. There is also a concession and the Cranberry Meadows Country Store. The entire experience is designed to be educational as well as fun for families, said
farm spokesperson Sarah Hopcott. "People can learn about where their food comes from, and have some fun in the country." They built the first corn maze in 2000, so this will be the 15th year. "We've been a farming family a long time – since 1932," said Sarah. "It's important for us to host people, and teach them about farming." The maze itself is stroller and wheelchair friendly, and the paths are five feet wide. It is a good walk, if not a hike, to navigate the 6.3 km of maze trails. Those venturing in should have comfortable footwear, and a water bottle. The average person finds their way out in an hour to 90 minutes, and the record time is 35 minutes. The maze is located at 13672 Reichenback Rd., Pitt Meadows. Bookings can be made on the website www.meadowsmaze.com.

HANEY FARMERS MARKET Haney Farmers Market has been in Maple Ridge a decade now. Give people a good time, and they'll stick around and combine their shopping for healthy, local food – while taking in the sights and sounds of local entertainment on the bandstand. It's a philosophy followed by the Haney Farmers Market, now in its 10th year of taking over Memorial Peace Park in downtown Maple Ridge every Saturday morning, from April to November. "The festival atmosphere has really made people stick around," said Eileen Dwillies, with the farmer's market society. "Maple Ridge is a hotbed of wonderful musical talents." But it's the food that gets people down to
the market. "They come for the vegetables, for sure. "In the summer, we have fresh fruit." Fresh B.C. strawberries, that are actually red inside and juicy, are favourites, as well as B.C. cherries from the Interior. Locally baked bread and sausages, cheese and eggs are tops of the grocery list. With California drying up from an extended drought, Dwillies says food prices could climb. And the U.S. is going to supply its own market before shipping north. "Our local food is going to look very appealing." While Maple Ridge has a population of 70,000, many still don't know the market exists. The coming changes to liquor regulations could provide the reason for more people to visit. The farmers market is just waiting for regulations to be confirmed allowing sales of locally made beer and wine. When the farmer's market opened in 2004, a total of 10 exhibitors showed up to sell their goods. A decade later, there are 57 merchants at the market with growers from Langley, Abbotsford and Aldergrove. One of the markets held late this May drew 1,700 visitors. "We think that's a pretty good number," said Dwillies. Ideally, she'd like to see a few more, although there are space limitations at the park. "I would be happy with 2,500."

TWO WONDERFUL WATERWAYS Maple Ridge is home to two river systems that can provide any angler a wonderful day on the water. Those waterways are the Alouette River and Kanaka Creek. Kanaka Creek has a canyon that has small waterfalls, beautiful trees and crystal clear water. You can fish from where it empties into the Fraser River to the 112th Street Bridge. Fishing is not permitted above the bridge. The river is home to cutthroat trout. When fishing this river, it is recommended that you wear waders as well as a wading belt. The river does not have a lot of shore access and some places on the river you must cross, can get over knee-high. In September, the chum salmon enter the creek but these fish are not open for fishing. They fill the river and viewing them is enjoyable for kids and families. On 240th Street, at Kanaka Creek, a few blocks north of Lougheed Highway, there is a fish ladder and the viewing area allows easy observation as they make their way up
the river to spawn. Once November comes around, the river opens for coho salmon. Check the fishing regulations for the exact date and regulations. The coho salmon is arguably the best fighting of its species. You can fly fish for them or float fish for them. The Alouette River is one of the best river systems in B.C., producing steelhead, cutthroat, dolly varden, chum salmon, pink salmon, and coho. Not all are open to retain. In the spring and summer, the chum fry are present in the river. The cutthroat trout like to feed on these and this can be the best time to fish for them. Fly fishing, bait fishing, or spin casting can all be done on the Alouette. Take your family for a picnic on one of the many places on the river. Bring your fishing rods and the kids can have a blast. In September, the chum salmon enter the river, but they're closed for retention. Also, on odd years, pink salmon enter the
river. It's another opportunity for you to take your kids down to the river and watch, as the salmon make their way up river to spawn. Once October comes around, the coho salmon make their way in. This species is open for retention, but you must check with the fishing regulations for quotas and openings. In December, steelhead enter the river. The steelhead is the fishermen's most sought after species. These fish are one of the best fighting fish. Fly fishing and float fishing are the most popular methods used for this species. Seeing the river in the winter after a snowfall is absolutely gorgeous. Don't let the cold weather of the winter discourage you from getting out onto the river. You could be missing out one of the most rewarding fishing experiences. If you're coming to Maple Ridge, don't forget your fishing rods and your camera.

BUSINESS Golden Ears Business Park won Industrial Development of the Year in Metro Vancouver's Commercial Real Estate Awards of Excellence for 2014. LIFE'S MORE FUN WITH THEATRE AND ART Plenty of entertainment at the ACT.
Nestled in the lobby of the Arts Centre Theatre, the Maple Ridge Art Gallery is a space of inspiration and wonder. The range of exhibitions the gallery features reflect the diversity of art, from bold and experimental to traditional genres such as weaving. The work of one of Canada’s leading tapestry artists, Barbara Heller, is currently featured in a retrospective exhibit, on display until July 26. The exhibition, Falling from Grace, features selected works from throughout Heller’s 40-year career creating tapestries from her studio on Vancouver’s Granville Island. The exhibition’s title refers to the appearance or suggestion of birds entwined in a landscape of predation, war or environmental destruction. Three new tapestries will be shown for the
first time in the Maple Ridge exhibition, all of them focusing on the deteriorating environment and its impact on once thriving populations of bird species. In two of these pieces, Heller shows how the overwhelming accumulation of plastics now circulating throughout the world’s oceans represents much more than a blight on the landscape. The tapestries, Detritus, and Detritus Too, both call attention to the sad plight of young birds that have inadvertently been fed fragments of plastic, with the inevitably tragic result. Even as Heller takes on these tough subjects, there is a beguiling beauty to the overall impact of her work, which acts as a counterbalance to the horror of each artwork’s central message. If you are a tad reluctant to venture into a place like the ACT or happen to be a theatre
neophyte, ACT executive director Lindy Sisson has a few words to calm your nerves. "I would have to say we are like any other community facility, no different than the pool or the library – come in and check us out, dive right in. The water is fine," she says. "The theatre is not an intimidating place. It’s a fun place and people are made to feel very at home at the ACT." The artists love to perform and appreciate visitors bringing their energy and participating in the shared experience of a live performance. "Truly, live performances blow away any recorded one because the exchange is invigorating and uplifting," Sisson adds. "Life can be isolating and confusing at times, and attending performing arts events is a great way to get more out of life. A performance can resonate on many levels, and one of the most important is making it an occasion to have some fun with family and friends." Tickets for the ACT new season go on sale on August 25. LOON LAKE Rushing water, lush forest and winding trails set amongst the West Coast mountains, a place to hike, canoe and camp. Loon Lake is set within the UBC Malcolm Knapp Research Forest, a 5,000-hectare forest named for British Columbia’s first registered professional forester and dedicated to research and education in the field of forestry at the top of 232nd Street in Maple Ridge. The centre is a camp retreat for groups. School research groups, firefighters, religious congregations and a group of kids and volunteers with bigger hearts than notebooks; almost anyone is welcome at one of B.C.’s unique park spaces. Opening in 1949, the camp was intended to provide a stable and natural research facility for UBC’s forestry students. The camp continues to provide the landscape for their work, while now providing a site for many groups looking for a weekend of natural exploration, outdoor activity, or just a vacation
from the grey-flannel grind. The campsite is a small, but growing part of the research forest. And as its list of prospective tenants begins to grow, so will the facility. The last piece of the old forestry camp was torn down in May, completing a decadelong process of renewal at the UBC facility. The staff building was the last surviving building from Loon Lake forestry camp built in 1948. Loon Lake was initially established as a UBC faculty of forestry camp for students. Initially, there was only a dining room and six rustic wood cabins with no electricity or indoor power. Professors used to stay there during the courses held every spring in UBC’s Malcolm Knapp Research Forest. In place of the old staff building will rise a
$3.3-million, 6,500-sq.-foot dining hall and kitchen. “Lots of our trees will be used for construction material for that building,” said facilities manager Karim Farahbakhchian. The new dining centre will have a vaulted ceiling and lots of windows and have the same look as the old staff building that’s being torn down. In 2004, a new gymnasium was built, followed by construction of the Koerner Centre in 2005. After that, the Johnson Cabins were built in 2009, complete with comfortable lounge areas, cozy fireplaces and peaceful sleeping rooms. Last year, Loon Lake had a natural gas supply installed into the centre, sparing the chore of hauling up propane tanks at a monthly cost of $11,000. The natural gas bill now is about a quarter of that. The centre’s largest tenant is the B.C. Cancer Society which books the facility seven weeks every year for Camp Goodtimes to help sick kids.

The old dining hall will be converted to more sleeping quarters, while the new dining area will go on the site of the former staff building. The new dining centre should be completed by next June. Over the course of a year, the Loon Lake Research and Education Centre hosts about 20,000 people through corporate and school retreats, wellness events, meetings and team-building exercises. Presently the camp has sections for youth and adult groups can house anywhere from 10 to 100 people in its six residential buildings. One of them offers adult bunks with two beds and a bathroom per room. Youth dorms will have eight beds per rooms. The camp has a mess hall, as well as a gym, a rope course, a climbing wall and docks. Additions include computer labs, an outdoor playing field and a lounge. The facilities are capable of housing and feeding up to 180 people. The camp has restrictions on the outdoor activities. Fishing and hunting are restricted due to ongoing research projects (some of which have been active for up to 50 years), while there are restrictions on biking, horses and other destructive activities. Besides groups which provide their own private programming, UBC offers rock-climbing, water-sports, repelling and other activities and courses for campers. The Canadian Cancer society is a permanent fixture at the Loon Lake camp, as the group holds Camp Goodtimes for youth there every summer. Projects at the research forest include a study on the influence of spacing on the growth of the Douglas fir, western hemlock and western red cedar in plantations, monitoring the movement patterns of red-legged frogs and northwestern salamanders in clear cuts and Gypsy moth trapping. There are also projects in other fields, such as astronomy.

Canada Day at Haney House Museum This Canada Day, join staff and volunteers at Haney House Museum from 11-3 p.m. and on Tuesday, July 1 for our picnicthemed celebration. Have your chance to dress up in costumes, play games – including potato sack races, giant inflatable toys, and crafts. Also partake in a guided tour of the house while enjoying refreshments in the garden. Inside the museum will showcase our summer tour: The Great Outdoors. This event is free.

40th anniversary celebration The Maple Ridge Museum is celebrating its 40th anniversary on Sunday, Aug. 10 and is holding a free event on the museum grounds from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. This event will feature live music, local food vendors, children’s games, displays and tours of the museum. The historical society will also be launching a new book at this event: Looking Back, Volume I, by Sheila Nickols, based on her column in the Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows News, featuring additional, never before published material.

Haney House The Haney family – Maple Ridge’s most wellknown pioneers and the namesake of the downtown area – donated this heritage home to the District of Maple Ridge in the 1970s, with the museum opening to the public in 1978. Completed in 1878, it is furnished with household items, photographs, furniture and memorabilia from that and subsequent eras. Find it at 11612 224th St. Haney House is open to the public from September to June from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. During July and August, Haney House is open Wednesday through Sunday from 1-4 p.m. Weekly heritage teas are held in the summer. Awash in heritage and culture Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows are awash in heritage and culture, thanks to the efforts of local historical societies and the arts community. Because of these organizations, there are a number of places to view local artifacts and learn more about the pioneers who settled here more than 100 years ago, as well as catch a play, performance or art exhibit. Maple Ridge Museum The museum is located in a well-maintained heritage home built in 1907 for the manager of the Haney Brick and Tile company. Learn how the community’s pioneers dressed, cooked, worked and played.The museum is stocked with furniture, household items, native artifacts, a miniature railway diorama and Canadian Pacific Railway caboose in the front yard. It also houses the community archives.
Pitt Meadows Museum The community has stocked Pitt Meadows Museum with many heritage items. The museum, located in the old General Store, is located at 12294 Harris Rd. and is open during the summer (June, July, August) from 1-4 p.m., Wednesday to Sunday. Off-season

BEAT THE HEAT Swimming spots in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows. You never know when we're going to get a heat wave. So if it happens this summer, Tourism Maple Ridge Pitt Meadows like to roll out the list of ways people can keep cool. For one, head over to Davison’s Pool to go swimming or tubing for the day. Located off Fern Crescent at about 236th Street in the Alouette River, Davison’s Pool is a popular place in Maple Ridge to hang out during the summer as people sun bathe and relax on the hot sun-warmed rocks. That's not the only place to find cool water. Alouette Lake in Golden Ears Provincial Park, in the day-use area, is an old standby as is Whonnock Lake on 112th Avenue in east Maple Ridge. Looking for an outdoor pool? Pitt Meadows has two of them. Hammond Outdoor Pool, opens July 1,
at 206th Street and Westfield Avenue, seven days a week starting at 12:30 p.m. Harris Outdoor Pool, opens July 1 at 12460 Harris Rd., on the same schedule as Hammond Outdoor Pool. Farther east, in Mission, there's Hayward Lake near the Ruskin Dam. Don’t like swimming? How about heading over to the library, suggests Tourism Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows. Maple Ridge Public Library and the Pitt Meadows Public Library have fun events going on during the summer. Check out www.fvrl.bc.ca. You could try to rent a canoe or a pedal boat at Alouette Lake. Whether you’re going with a friend or the whole family, Alouette Rentals has hourly, daily and group rates for canoes, pedal boats and kayaks. Don’t forget
to slap on some sun screen and a hat while spending time outdoors in the hot heat! You also can check out the spray parks in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows. The Kinsmen spray park and outdoor swimming pool is located at Maple Ridge Park and is open to the public on a weather permitting, seasonal basis. The Pitt Meadows spray park is near the outdoor pool is located at the Harris Park at 12460 Harris Rd. Farther north, there's Pitt Lake where the Katzie First Nation is now managing the day-use area and canoe rental. Dogs also have a tough time in the heat. Do you need somewhere to take your dog to cool off? In Golden Ears Provincial Park you can let your dog off-leash in either the North Beach day-use area near Gold Creek or the Alouette day-use area between the boat launch and the canoe rental shop. Gold Creek itself offers some cool runnings.

BLUEGRASS FEST 2014 True North Bluegrass Fest returns to Albion Fairgrounds. The audience seated behind Gordie Sadler couldn't keep their feet from tapping as he played his banjo at a Pitt Meadows council meeting in June. If the performance had taken place anywhere else, the lead singer for the bluegrass band 5 on a String would surely have coaxed the crowd into a hoedown, accompanied by the cool strumming Colin Goldie, from the band The Still Blue. "That was just awesome," said Peter Vanderlee, a senior director for the True North Fraser Bluegrass Festival, which is getting ready to pack the Albion Fairgrounds on the Labour Day long weekend, Aug. 29-31. Last year's inaugural festival drew more than 1,000 people with 150 tents and RVs camping on the fairgrounds throughout the weekend.
Organizers rebranded the 25-year-old Chilliwack festival and brought it to Maple Ridge, said Vanderlee. "We gave it a welcoming home." The festival has a goal of turning Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows into a destination for bluegrass lovers. Half of the festival's steering committee is made up of returning volunteers. However, there's always room for more helping hands. The festival is looking for more sponsors and volunteers. Among the bands slated to play this year are Joe Mullins and the Radio Ramblers from Ohio, Windy Hill from San Francisco, Rural Delivery from Seattle and B.C. bands 5 on s String, Scout Mountain and the Sweet Lowdown. While most music festivals see their performers play their set, then retreat back to
their respected trailers or buses to never be seen again, the heart of the bluegrass festival is as much based on the music played at the campsites as it is on the main stage. This year’s festival promises more impromptu jams and music circles. There will be a nightly corn roast and stalls featuring everything from musical instruments to homemade soap. The campground opens four days before the festival, on Tuesday, August 26. Dog Park Rules: • Please be considerate of our neighbours while using parks • Use this area at your own risk • Maximum three (3) dogs per handler/owner • You are required to pick up after your dog and dispose of dog waste in the designated containers provided • Owners are responsible for their dogs behavior at all times; • Children under 12 years old must be accompanied by an adult in an off-leash park • Dogs are permitted off-leash inside the designated off-leash area only • Your dog must be removed from the off-leash area immediately if it becomes aggressive • No glass items permitted in dog off-leash park • Parks with designated small dog areas are restricted to small dogs only (less than 15” tall) • Owners / handlers must control barking dogs and stop dogs from digging holes in the park
