Local air cadet recognized with Lord Strathcona Medal Flight Sergeant Cameron MacCuaig describes his rewarding cadet career

A

Lacombe resident and member of the Royal Canadian Air Cadets has been recognized by his squadron with a high honour.

Flight Sergeant Cameron MacCuaig of the 24 Squadron in Red Deer was awarded the Lord Strathcona Medal this year in recognition of his outstanding qualities and accomplishments as an air cadet.

MacCuaig said the Lord Strathcona Medal is an annual award given to one cadet from each participating squadron who is deemed by his or her officers and fellow cadets to be a leader and a hard worker.

During the squadron’s final parade of the year, MacCuaig learned he would be receiving the award when his name was called during the awards ceremony. He said his reaction was a mixture of pride and surprise.

“I was, honestly, probably the most shocked one there,” said MacCuaig. “I think that was one of the proudest moments of my life.”

It was a love of history and aviation that drew him to the air cadets. He said that his interest in historical battles led to a desire to join the army.

However, MacCuaig said he was also fascinated with flying and chose to join the Royal Canadian Air Cadets rather than the Royal Canadian Army Cadets because of that.

“I’m kind of a big history buff, so I read pretty much every book I could find about military history.”

MacCuaig said that joining a military organization like the cadets isn’t quite like what you see in the movies.

He said initially, he expected it to be like the scenes in movies with the drill sergeant shouting at troops.

Instead, he found the cadets a friendly and welcoming group.

It didn’t take MacCuaig long to fall in love with the cadets program. He said after learning the basics, he was pretty much hooked. He added that he enjoys the teamwork and leadership as-

pects of the program as well as, of course, how much you learn about planes.

Through cadets, MacCuaig has gained a number of benefits, he said. He added the program is great for building skills like leadership and teamwork as well as characteristics like self-confidence and self-respect.

Self-confidence is one skill that MacCuaig has benefitted from a lot. He said that before cadets he was very quiet and nervous.

“I used to be too scared to go up and ask for extra ketchup at McDonald’s,” said MacCuaig. “I was one of those quiet and timid people.”

He said that every cadet finds

different aspects of the program enjoyable for different reasons.

Personally, he enjoys drill exercises and even the classes on how aircraft work. He added there is a great work-play balance to the program and lots of activities like survival and marksmanship training as well as extra curricular aspects like band.

Regardless of what cadets find interesting about the program though, MacCuaig said if they want to get any kind of enjoyment or accomplishment from it, they have to be willing to put in the effort.

“The more you put into the cadet program, the more you are going to get out of it,” said MacCu-

aig. “You can’t just show up and not put any effort into the classes and expect it to change. You have to put effort in. If there is stuff on the weekends, show up for that.

But it really is a rewarding program.”

MacCuaig said it is difficult to single out any one thing as a ‘favourite’ aspect of the program, because he enjoys the program as a whole. He said the amount that he has learned through the cadet program has been invaluable to him.

In the past year, he has been instructing the program as well as participating in it. He said that through instructing, he has grown the most as a cadet.

As he is 18 years old, MacCuaig will ‘age out’ of the air cadet program in the next year. He said he has already reached the goal he set out for himself when he first joined the program by reaching the rank of flight sergeant before aging out.

His new goal is to earn one more promotion and age out as a warrant officer second class.

While MacCuaig might be too old for the program in a year, it won’t be an end to his path in such organizations.

He said he is looking into a career in the military and is currently talking to a recruiter in Edmonton. news@lacombeexpress.com

Local students benefit from gardening program

BY BRIAN VOSSEN Lacombe Express It was a celebration of learning, community and food.

On June 12th, students of Lacombe’s Little Green Thumbs program held their first annual harvest celebration event at the Lacombe Composite High School. The event saw students from LCHS, Terrace Ridge Elementary School and Aspen Heights Elementary School doing a harvest, a pizza party and some planting.

Little Green Thumbs is a Kindergarten to Grade 9 program that began five years ago in Saskatchewan.

It is presented in partnership with Ag for Life and a long list of other sponsors.

Last year, David Sprague, CEO of Ag for Life, decided the program, which had already been operating in Edmonton for several years, needed to spread to the rest of Alberta as well.

At its base, Little Green Thumbs is all about knowing where food comes from.

Sprague said many chil-

dren don’t understand the journey produce makes from farm to plate and many think food simply comes from the grocery store. Little Green Thumbs exists to get children engaged in the process of making food right from the start.

“We thought that was an important connection to make,” said Sprague.

Luckily, accomplishing that is not difficult thanks to children’s willingness to learn, he added.

“Children are naturally curious and inquisitive.

They’re happy to roll up their sleeves, they’re happy to get their fingers dirty, they’re happy to really dig in and make it happen. So it’s a fun program to be around but it’s also extremely educational for the children. I think it’s an experience they will remember for the rest of their lives.”

At the younger ages, the program focuses on teaching students how food grows and how the process of farm to fork begins. In the older grades, it focuses

more on the science of food growth, what happens at the in-between points on that journey and open students up to think about how they might fit within that role.

At all ages in the program, it opens up an interest to future endeavours in the food industry. Whether it be as farmers, food scientists or simply educated consumers, students learn that they have a role within the food cycle.

Laurie Phillips, a teacher at Terrace Ridge, said she was interested in Little Green Thumbs as part of a bigger project to help her students reconnected with the environment, learn about where their food comes from and how they can grow their own produce. She said she liked how the program fit in with the curriculum on plant life and thought it would be a good way to bring the school community together.

Last week’s celebration brought all the aspects of the program together. Students harvested their produce, made food from the products of their gardens, brought the community together, shared knowl-

New visitor’s centre opened at Ellis Bird Farm Farm staff and patrons as well and he believes ME Global staff intend to use the meeting space also.

It only took 12 weeks to construct the facility, something Wigmore said was impressive. “Most of the time, you can’t build a garage in 12 weeks.”

Initial plans for the project began five years ago.

Last year, construction began to move ahead when Ellis Bird Farm secured $450,000 in sponsorship from ME Global in August to fund the project.

In addition to the majority of funding from ME Global, Ellis Bird Farm also received donations in the form of in-kind services.

While the bulk of the project was funded by ME Global, several smaller items, like the initial designs of the building, the construction of the road to the building and some of the finishing touches were donated in-kind.

“Every bit helps. It completes the project. If we’d have to pay all of that, it wouldn’t be the project it is today.”

BY BRIAN VOSSEN Lacombe Express Ellis Bird Farm has opened its new visitor’s centre.

Last week, delegates representing Ellis Bird Farm, its board, ME Global and the Alberta Government were present at the facility to cut the ribbon and declare the visitor’s centre officially open. Ken Wigmore, chair of the Ellis Bird Farm board, said this facility will improve Ellis Bird Farm’s ability to operate during poor weather conditions.

“Up until this point in time we haven’t had a building we can hold a function in during inclement weather,” said Wigmore. He added while Ellis Bird Farm has shut down during the winter in the past because the majority of the birds migrate south, the building opens up possibilities of the farm operating year-round.

The 3,500 sq. ft. building will house more washrooms, a staff room, a gift store and enough room to hold 100 people seated.

Wigmore said he hopes the facility will be utilized by more than just Ellis Bird

POLICE BRIEFS LOCOS PLAYER IN COLLISION Shortly after 1 a.m. on June 14th, Lacombe Police, Fire and EMS responded to a two-vehicle collision at Hwy. 2A and 47th Ave. in Lacombe. Police believe a pickup truck traveling north with seven occupants and traveling at high speed, ran a red light and collided with

another pickup traveling west. The impact caused the northbound truck to roll, coming to rest on the CP Rail tracks parallel to Hwy. 2A, police say.

In an email the day after the collision, Amendt said Anderson was “Fighting for his life” in Foothills Hospital but other details were not available. Anderson’s teammate Carson Barnes was also involved in the collision, but Amendt said Barnes sustained only minor bumps and bruises.

OPINION Summer social experiment You are driving down the highway when you see two figures moving along the side of the road.

As you approach, they stick out their thumbs, signaling their request for a ride.

Do you stop and pick them up? Or keep driving?

Many drivers are uneasy about picking up hitchhikers. Most police officers would also recommend against offering rides to strangers on the side of the road as well as using hitchhiking as a mode of transportation.

However, hitchhikers are still a common site along roadsides in the summer and we know they do manage to get from one point to another somehow.

In a joint project, McMaster and Ryerson Universities have collaborated to build a hitchhiking robot which they hope can hitchhike across the country this summer in an experiment to see how willing Ca-

nadians are to help travelers explore the country, at least the robotic kind.

Going by the released renderings of Hitchbot, the machine won’t look like much from the outside.

Hitchbot’s body consists of a bucket, has simple rods for legs, arms that can signal for a ride (his only moveable parts) and a cake saver for a head.

Inside however, there is some sophisticated technology that allows Hitchbot to see, speak and report its location to his creators.

When plugged into the auxiliary power in a vehicle after it has been picked up, a microphone and speaker allow Hitchbot to recognize (or at least attempt to recognize) speech and respond using a Wikipedia database and dialogue written by Hitchbot’s creators.

3G network capabilities and GPS will allow Hitchbot’s location to be tracked as he travels across Canada.

This social experiment puts a great deal of faith into the community as well.

It trusts that those who will pickup the robot will not damage or steal it.

However, if Hitchbot is destroyed or goes missing, ‘sibling robots’ are standing by to step in and complete the experiment.

It will be interesting to see how willing Canadians are to help Hitchbot complete its journey.

While the teams from McMaster and Ryerson will be able to track and even communicate with the robot, Hitchbot will be entirely reliant on the kindness of others to complete

its journey.

Hitchbot will begin its journey on July 27th, starting at the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design.

If all goes according to plan, Hitchbot will then enjoy a series of rides across the country to reach its destination, the Open Space Gallery in Victoria.

In 2011, the same issue was brought before Alberta courts.

This could be extremely beneficial in engaging a younger voting community, and understanding trends of youth needs.

At 16, my understanding of government was fairly developed, thanks to the education and re-iteration of party principles in years of social studies classes. I was interested and finally understood how things could affect me.

At 16, I also knew more about the government than many adults I’d talk to. They were simply uninterested, or stuck with the same voting pattern as their parents.

Young adults have a thirst for

knowledge. Classes debate and explain and break down party ideals and platforms to get a better understanding of what governments can do at national, provincial and municipal levels. This education encourages young people to make up their own minds and to explore the options of their government.

If people as young as 16 could vote, I think that there would be a greater interest in government teachings. If people can drive at 16, manoeuvring a giant metal box with a motor that kills thousands of people a year, why shouldn’t they be able to vote?

If one were to look at a social studies curriculum in Alberta, they would see that these young adults are learning the skills that would be beneficial to making an informed voting decision. They are taught the importance of making informed decisions; they learn how political institutions affect their day-to-day lives and are made to embrace critical thinking and problem solving.

Curriculums across Canada are designed to engage critical thinking regarding political systems and begin to explore the political

inquiry process. What that means is to be able to explore multiple perspectives, consequences of laws and civic issues and developing a strong, clear position on political issues.

Adults are not expected to use these skills when voting – many adults either Google the party a few days before a vote, follow their parent’s interests and voting trends, or simply don’t care.

If Alberta were to pick up this idea, it could have a massive effect on voter turnout. If 16-year-olds and 17-year-olds were allowed to vote, the interests of the future generations would be better represented and the government would be able to plan for the needs and ideas that are valued by younger generations.

Many adults who vote do not research political parties or consider what youths might need from a government. Voter turnout numbers in Alberta are significantly lower than they used to be, which means there is a large number of the population who feels their ideas and opinions are not worth voting on.

This could be due to repetition of the same party being in control for

the better part of nearly 40 years – Progressive Conservatives.

If younger people could vote, I think that the Legislative Assembly would include more variety of opinions and values that reflect more honestly what Albertans need.

Provinces across Canada can all benefit from a higher voter turnout. These people are an important demographic of the population, and will soon be able to vote anyway. No one could have asked for a better Blackfalds Days weekend.

From June 13-15th, Blackfalds held its annual celebration jampacked with events and saw support from the community for the festival. The bulk of the Blackfalds Days events took place on the Saturday of the weekend.

As residents and visitors lined up, the sun was shining and promising favourable weather for the Blackfalds Days parade.

This year’s Blackfalds Days also featured the 10th Annual Oldies Show & Shine & BBQ. Classic cars rolled out to Highway Ave. and collectors, car enthusiasts and anyone else with an interest in classic cars enjoyed the selection of restored and modified collecto collectors’ vehicles both new and old.

A fter its popular debut last year, the Humans VerAfter sus Zo Zombies (HVZ) event returned. HVZ is a giant game of tag where zombies try to convert humans while humans try to hide, evade and repel zombies with ffoam weapons.

New Community Economic Development Plan takes Shape City Council has passed a resolution to endorse the new Community Economic Development (CED) Plan, which includes the selection of an Olds Institute-type organization model to support CED efforts, as well as the presentation and discussion of a number of possible objectives, strategies and actions to be integrated into the plan.

“There is real vision and empowerment in the new CED Plan in that it encourages innovation and growth thorough collaboration,” said Mayor Steve Christie. “It is clear that the City cannot bring about change in isolation: we need to mobilize our citizens and stakeholders, including key private, public and non-profit sectors of the economy towards a set of common goals. This is a chance for everyone to get involved and help chart the course for Lacombe.”

The new CED vision seeks to improve the quality of life within Lacombe by fostering a collaborative environment focused on cultivating innovation, nurturing a business friendly culture, promoting sustainable growth and creating a safe, inclusive, vibrant and healthy community.

To achieve the broad goals of the CED plan, a new organization similar in structure to the Olds Institute for Community and Regional Development will be formed to promote balanced community growth. New grants may be secured that are not available to municipalities, and innovative concepts like a Community Economic Development Investment Fund and a

business incubation model will be better received as projects spearheaded by the community, as opposed to being led municipally.

Lacombe’s new CED Plan emphasizes a collaborative environment that provides all sectors of our community with opportunities to share ideas, build solutions, and help implement a plan of action to address the common challenges we face.

The recruitment of interested community leaders and businesses for the Olds Institute-type organization will begin shortly. 2014 Volunteers of Distinction Awards The 2014 Volunteers of Distinction celebration took place at Anna Maria’s Cafe at the Lacombe Memorial Centre. This event recognizes the contributions of community volunteer members on municipal boards, committees and commissions. Use any mower to grasscycle and leave clippings on the lawn as you mow. Mow frequently, every four to five days. Keep the mower blade sharp and at a height of 6-7.5 cm (2.5-3 inches).

No more than 2.5 cm (1 inch) should be cut at any one time. If grass is too long after prolonged wet weather, start with a higher cut and gradually lower it during successive cuttings. If clumps have resulted from cutting we grass or making to long a cut, mow again from a different

direction to break up the clumps. Try to mow only when your grass is dry.

Eagle’s Nest project finally progressing

BY BRIAN VOSSEN Lacombe Express After deferring the decision for weeks, Lacombe County council has finally decided to give second reading to a bylaw that would rezone a parcel of land near the shore of Gull Lake from agricultural use to recreational use, allowing for the construction of a 20-site private campground – Eagle’s Nest on Gull Lake.

On June 12th at a regular meeting, council narrowly voted in favour of giving the bylaw second reading by a margin of one vote.

Tim Gibbs, who made the application for the rezoning, said he doesn’t understand why council continues to push the development towards becoming an RVR zoning when he has met all the requirements necessary for a kind of development allowed for by the recreational zoning.

“It shouldn’t be this long a process,” said Gibbs.

Several concerns regarding the quality of the wastewater management system that will be employed by Eagle’s Nest have been raised by council as well.

Gibbs said that the system should not be cause for concern because other systems of the same type, even ones operating near wetlands, already exist in the County and have shown to be effective methods of wastewater treatment.

Councillor Rod McDermand was especially concerned about the standards of the wastewater system and setting a precedent.

He said if council were to go ahead with this project, they would be opening a door to developments to use what he believed was a sub-par water treatment system as well.

On Lord Gordon, Bentley, royalty and football Back in the early days of the Edmonton Eskimos it would have been difficult to find fans more enthusiastic than those in Lacombe.

Every game day found them on the road to Edmonton, blankets (and jug?) in hand, to cheer on the likes of Spaghetti Legs Parker and his talented cohorts.

of fans none was more avid than Lord Roderick Gordon of Bentley.

Lord and Lady Gordon were well known in the Bentley area as owners of the ‘Shady Spring Farm,’ their 1,000-plus acre farm to the west across the Blindman River.

Here they raised high quality thoroughbreds,

continuing a tradition of the Gordon aristocracy that predated 1834 when the family won the English Derby. They maintained a large stud of highly bred stallions under the watchful eye of Harry Churchill - the recently retired groom at the Lacombe Experimental Farm.

This probably initiated his involvement with the Canadian cattle industry for he was elected a director of the Alberta Cattle Breeders Association in 1952.

Lord Gordon married the Baroness in 1949.

That same year they purchased the property at Bentley.

They were among the first to import the Murray Gray breed of cattle from Australia and were prominent in developing that breed in Canada. By the 1970s their own herd numbered approximately 100 head.

They retired to Edmonton where he passed away at age 83 and she at age 81 but they left a rich legacy of memories in the Bentley community not least of which were the stories of an elusive red sports car.

FREDEEN It apparently appeared only during the football season, a red streak heading south down Hwy. 2, a streak that left pursuers in the dust.

No one ever noted from whence it came; its arrival must have been sedate. And no one ever took note of its departure.

That, too, must have been discrete.

It was only the officers on highway patrol who took note -- but only after the image had vanished from their rear view mirror.

Eventually spotters were engaged and the noose of suspicion closed in around a destination west of Bentley.

There the patrol waited in hopeful anticipation one autumn night. They were not disappointed.

As for the Gordons, one might speculate that to them this was merely a sport akin to the annual running of the bulls down the streets of Barcelona, a sport that provided an adrenalin rush but without the deadly consequences associated with their underground experiences in Europe.

Buccaneers lose rough game to the Drillers

BY BRIAN VOSSEN Lacombe Express It was a rough night for the Central Alberta Buccaneers. On June 14th, the Bucs hosted the Grande Prairie Drillers and lost their first game this season 31–18.

Buccaneers Coach Duane Brown attributed the Bucs’ performance to a poor practicing week. He cited the mantra, “You play how you practice,” and said the team had one of its worst weeks of practice all season.

This loss is especially hard considering the Buccaneers were aiming for a perfect season this year. However, Brown said that an undefeated record is not the only definition of a perfect season.

“We just made our season a little tougher than it needed to be,” said Brown. “But that’s alright. A perfect season sometimes isn’t the one with the perfect record.

“Sometimes it’s how you handle adver-

sity. We have adversity now.”

Brown also said he was unimpressed with the quality of the officiating in this game. Penalties plagued the Bucs throughout the game and Brown admitted he and the Bucs needed to take responsibility for some of them, but he still thought Saturday’s officiating was some of the worst he had ever seen.

In particular, Brown was upset that no penalty had been called when Buccaneer Tyler Johnson was blindsided with a hit that caused him substantial injury.

While Brown said the Driller player who tackled Johnson made no attempt to play the ball, the officials disagreed.

The game started off well for the Buccaneers, they opened up scoring and held off the advancements of the Drillers for most of the first quarter, however, with seconds left in the first quarter, the Drillers managed to tie things up, ending the quarter 7 – 7 and leveling the playing field.

In the second quarter, it was Grande Prairie that opened scoring with a touchdown and successful conversion about 10 minutes in. Buccaneers would not answer until a field goal in the third.

Grande Prairie would then score their own field goal to make the score 17–10 in favour of the Drillers. That’s where things started to go downhill for the Bucs.

While a punt from Matt Merkley and a safety thanks to a tackle from Jamie Blinkhorn gained the Bucs a single point each, they were unable to gain enough traction for a touchdown or even another field goal.

Grande Prairie on the other hand managed to extend their lead with another touchdown and successful conversion kick, making the score 24–12.

Shortly after, when the Bucs next took possession of the ball, a big interception by the Drillers led to a touchdown and conversion kick that effectively sealed the Bucs’ fate. The Bucs managed to score one

more touchdown but were unable to make a successful conversion kick. It was in the last minute of the game, with the Bucs knocking on the Drillers’ door for one last touchdown, Tylor Johnson received a brutal hit that left him on the sidelines for the remainder of the game.

Johnson was transported via ambulance to the hospital after the game where it was discovered he had severely separated his shoulder. “Fortunately, that is the worst injury he has,” said Brown. He added that he expects Johnson to be out for the remainder of the season.

In addition to an unfortunate injury to a player, that loss will impact the Bucs game in both defensive and kicking ability.

Brown said that there a few players willing to step up to the plate but no matter what, Johnson’s will be big boots to fill.

“It’s going to be tough,” said Brown. “He is an all-star player and rightfully so.” news@lacombeexpress.com

Local bodybuilder relishes her success

BY KALISHA MENDONSA Lacombe Express Mother, fitness enthusiast and physiotherapist RoAnna McLenahan has a lot of experience staying fit.

Along with helping to operate the Lacombe Physiotherapy Clinic, McLenahan is a judge director for International Natural Bodybuilding and Fitness (INBF) Canada and a pro-bodybuilder in the World Natural Bodybuilding Federation (WNBF).

“I’ve always been interested in fitness and I’ve worked out pretty much as long as I can remember,” said McLenahan.

“I love the push, I love the determination, the self-discipline, working for your own achievements, putting that work in.”

She began her first competition in 1996, when a friend and gym owner asked her to compete and offered to train her. She fell in love with the showmanship and the idea of working to a goal. In 2011, she got back into the bodybuilding world and has been doing various shows and competitions since.

“The final thing that really got me motivated in the more recent years was that I was turning 40. I wanted to do something

that was getting myself out there and was inspirational,” she said.

“When you’re turning 40, you want to do something great and push yourself to those limits, because you feel like you’re getting just a little bit older, and want to make sure you’re living your life to the fullest.”

McLenahan is a strictly natural bodybuilder. She and the leagues she competes in are completely drug-free. This is a very important aspect of McLenahan’s training and philosophy.

“I wanted to make sure that I did this in the most healthy way and that I was going to promote healthy, drug-free training,” explained McLenahan on her return to the bodybuilding world.

She was extremely athletic all her life.

Gymnastics, skating and general fitness interests have driven her to always be setting goals for herself. She said that she most enjoyed sports where a specific goal was laid out, could be reached and then changed into a new goal.

“Even my career, I’m working in fitness and health and proper movement. We’re always promoting fitness, strengthening, doing something that you enjoy,” she said.

“Being a physiotherapist is a great transition (from bodybuilding). That’s where my drive to make sure I’m doing things the healthiest way possible comes from. It’s a great marriage – my career, my sport, my pastimes – it all works together.”

McLenahan said that her family is a very important part of her fitness training. She and her husband are very active together, working out and strength training together.

Her kids motivate her to continue and show her support through the strict and difficult lifestyle required for bodybuilding. McLenahan emphasized the importance of having family support through strict dieting and intense training.

“I’m one of the owners of Lacombe physio so I work a lot. With my family, the kids are active and we do all kinds of sports together. My husband works out with me all the time. Family keeps me busy the rest of the time – that’s pretty much all I can fit in! They help me a lot.”

McLenahan’s passion for fitness and health is seen in her dedication to her profession.

“We want people healthy and active.

Thousands to converge during Ponoka Stampede

BY JEFFREY HEYDEN-KAYE Ponoka News For one week of the year the small town of Ponoka becomes a cowboy metropolis that brings thousands to its small community to enjoy the 78th Ponoka Stampede.

Organizers call it the Wild West of the ’36 and Stampede President Joe Dodds has a special phrase that many cowboys use when its rodeo time. “It’s better than Christmas, it lasts a whole week.”

If it has western roots or involves cowboys, the chances are rodeo lovers will be able to see some of the action over the busy Stampede week from June 24th to July 1st. Members of the Ponoka Stampede and Exhibition Association work year-round to bring high quality entertainment, which starts with the Jace Harty Memorial Bull Riding Event.

This Professional Bull Riders (PBR) event was added

to the Ponoka Stampede list of events last year and gets things going for rodeo fans.

“You kind of forget about your life for seven days,” said Dodds.

Events at the Ponoka Stampede are sanctioned by the Canadian Professional Rodeo Association and the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association and have the top 10 total payouts in the world.

Events during the week are geared for the entire family and involve pancake breakfasts, a three-mile long parade and midway.

Rodeo lovers will get their fair share of cowboys and guns during the Alberta Mounted Shooters Association show at the Calnash Ag Event Centre and in the evening, grandstand music performances by the likes of Corb Lund and Big and Rich are sure to keep country music lovers happy.

A total of four nights finish with a bang during the fire-

works displays, which gets people excited for the next day of rodeo and chuckwagon action.

The World Professional Chuckwagon Association provides fans with six nights of entertainment, including the $50,000 Tommy Dorchester Dash for Cash.

The steer wrestlers (bulldoggers), calf ropers and team ropers have two go-rounds in a day; slack in the morning and then during the pro rodeo in the afternoon. This was done to give competitors a fighting chance to win.

Infield entertainment is always fun with rodeo clown Ash (Crash) Cooper keeping people laughing during the rodeo. Also horse trainer Bobby Kerr will show thousands of attendees the bond that can be created between a horse and his owner.

People from all over world come to the Ponoka Stampede for their vacation. Dodds has seen licence plates from Alaska, the Yukon and the United States.

“We try to put on a first class organization and it works all the way down.”

Another feature during the rodeo week is the Tough Enough to Wear Pink awareness day for June 28th. The idea was created by Wrangler to raise awareness for breast cancer and the Stampede Association took on the idea in 2007.

The Dash for Cash and the Stampede Showdown — which brings the best four riders in all the rodeo events in a final exciting showdown — on the last day of the Ponoka Stampede are a crowd favourite that has everyone involved on the edge of their seats. reporter@ponokanews.com

ARTS & LEISURE Gospel Music Celebration set for Red Deer Top Southern Gospel groups from across the continent featured at event Gospel music fans will soon be streaming to the Centrium in Red Deer to hear some of the finest artists in the genre today. The Gospel Music Celebration runs July 1012th.

Events will be held at the Centrium, kicking off Thursday. The box office opens at 4 p.m. as does the exhibit hall, with celebration concerts running from 6 to 11 p.m.

Featured performers this year include Young St. Vocal Band, Roset, Double Portion, The Browns, Potters Clay, Southern Quartet. The Banksons, the Watchman Four Quartet, the Singing Hills, The Mark Trammell Quartet, Booth Brothers and Legacy V. Other groups set to hit the stage include the Old Paths Quartet, the Southmen Quartet and Greater Vision.

Concerts on Friday and Saturday evenings begin at 6 p.m. as well.

Other highlights include Showcase Spectacular with Jubilee III – Christmas in July on July 11th at 1 p.m. in the Centrium. This special event will feature Greater Vision, Booth Brothers and Legacy V. The guys have all joined forces with a Christmas CD as well, and audiences will get a sampling of what that particular project holds.

Another Showcase Spectacular runs July 12th at 1 p.m. with The Triumphant Quartet in the Centrium as well.

With their warm, easy voices, the Booth Brothers have been sharing their faith and their music fulltime since 1998. These men get their influences from a range of performers - from the Eagles to the Gatlin Brothers to gospel greats such as Bill Gaither and Mosie Lister.

Ronnie and Michael Booth grew up with the sound of music in their home. Raised in Tampa, Florida, their father, Ron Sr., sang in gospel groups, including the Rebels Quartet. Ronnie and Michael began traveling with their father as the Booth Brothers in 1990.

In 1998, Ron Sr. retired from the stage so Ronnie and Michael began looking for a new singing partner. They had several singers come through the group, but most recently teamed up with Jim Brady, formerly of The Schulers.

The newest ‘Booth Brother’ actually had his first gig with the brothers at a Gaither event. “We didn’t even have a chance to really practice,” Ronnie says with a laugh.

“We just met him at the event. We ran through a couple of things and then we went on stage!”

But the combination worked and Brady has become an integral part of the trio.

The Booth Brothers’ dedication to the music they love has rewarded them with multiple awards and recognitions. Included among these are Trio of the Year, Male Group of the Year, Best Live Performer of the Year, Song of the Year and various other honors.

SWEET SOUNDS - The Singing Hills are just one of many acclaimed Gospel groups to be featured during Canada’s Gospel Music Celebration at Westerner Park in Red Deer July 10-12th.

Known for their heartfelt sincerity, family harmonies, original songs and great sense of humor, the Singing Hills inspire their audiences through their personal, up-close presentation. They have recorded over a dozen albums and made numerous television appearances.

Each year thousands of people attend the Singing Hills’ concerts and appreciate their ability to communicate the gospel message to all ages.

The group consists of Roger and Patti Hill, three of their four daughters, Kari, Kelli, and Kim and Kim’s husband Kevin Elias. Another audience favourite is the well-known group Legacy V. When the Legendary Cathedral Quartet retired in December of 1999, Scott Fowler and Roger Bennett decided to continue the musical tradition of Southern Gospel Quartet singing.

Legacy Five was organized and had their official debut in 2000 in Atlanta, Georgia.

Immediately audiences responded to their four-part harmony and their ability to communicate the message of Christ.

Since the quartet’s formation, they have established and maintained a firm place at the top of Christian music.

Legacy Five has also been featured on video tapings of the Gaither and friends Homecoming Video series, which has sold millions of copies worldwide.

JONES Buy a company that sells painkillers. Why? Because the boomer generation is starting to hurt more with each passing year. And they expect effective relief from the agony of arthritis.

What boomers want, they expect to get. But how successful will they be? Several years ago, Dr. Nicholas Di Nubile, a Philadelphia orthopedic surgeon, added a new word to the English language, ‘Boomeritis’.

He said boomers were the first generation to become obsessed by exercise, and they are paying the price by becoming banged-up boomers.

Today, there are 76 mil-

lion boomers in the U.S and six million in Canada.

By pushing their bodies too hard they’ve developed bursitis, tendonitis, arthritic hips and knees and a host of other traumatic problems.

The generation following the boomers could benefit from a lesson from them, and from Aristotle, who, centuries ago, preached the value of moderation. But by keeping a stiff upper lip when intense exercise starts to hurt, today’s determined health fanatics are on the road to eventual pain.

I’ve yet to see a happy looking jogger. And the bandaged knee, elbow or wrist has become, for the boomer, a badge of honour.

So where will joggers and other banged-up baby boomers find relief ? For some of their degenerative joints, deterioration has progressed so far that the only hope is a joint replacement.

Other boomers may, with luck, ease the pain and reverse joint damage by lesser measures and

more modest activity.

During an interview with Dr. Julian Whitaker, a California expert on natural remedies, he stressed the aim is to restore damaged cartilage. He says that boomers should take 2,500 milligrams (mg) of Vitamin C daily which slows the development of osteoarthritis and eases pain.

Vitamin C is needed to produce collagen, the major component of cartilage. Vitamin D3 400 international units (IU), Beta carotene 15,000 IU and natural Vitamin E 800 IU are also helpful. Whitaker adds that 1,500 mg of glucosamine daily in divided doses along with chondroitin sulfate helps to build new cartilage.

Chondroitin sulfate, like glucosamine, is abundant in cartilage. It works by holding onto water which gives cartilage its cushioning effect and also inhibits enzymes that break down cartilage.

What about the science behind Celadrin? A double blind study at the University of Connecticut evaluated the effect of Celadrin cream 30 minutes after it was applied. This showed decreased pain and stiffness, better mobility, strength and balance. Studies also show that

Celadrin works similar to, but much more dramatically than, the essential fatty acids EPA and HDA derived from fish oils. The suggested dosage is applied to the affected area three to four times a day. But the cream should not be applied to wounds or damaged skin.

Lastly, don’t neglect to fight obesity. If you weigh 150lbs, the pressure on the joints increases to 450 pounds on movement.

When going down stairs, it reaches 900 lbs. Weight loss can also help to preserve the joint function of banged-up baby boomers.

DEZ Greek cuisine is one of my all-time favourites, and this personal recipe of mine for Greek burgers is sure to be a hit at your next backyard cookout. Feel free to replace the lamb with beef, if you’re not a lamb lover - but I personally love the flavour of lamb in this recipe.

Fresh herbs are a must - this is not a recipe for utilizing your spice rack.

GREEK LAMB BURGERS 500g lean ground lamb (or lean ground beef) 1 large egg 7 garlic cloves, crushed to a paste 3 tbsp. finely chopped fresh oregano 2 tbsp. finely chopped fresh rosemary 1 tsp. salt 1/2 tsp. ground pepper 100g feta cheese, crumbled fine

Mix all ingredients in a bowl and divide equally into four portions. Shape each portion into a burger patty.

On a preheated BBQ, grill the burgers over medium heat until cooked through or alternatively in a preheated pan over medium heat. Approximately four to five minutes per side but an instant read thermometer is the way to go: 71C or 160F. Serve with Tzatziki and lettuce and optional tomato on your favourite burger buns. Makes four burgers.

GREEK TZATZIKI Do not peel the cucumbers, as the skin adds a lot of colour.

1/2 long English cucumber, grated 250g plain yogurt 2 garlic cloves, crushed to a paste 1 tbsp. finely chopped fresh dill 1/2 tbsp. extra virgin olive oil Salt and pepper to season Put grated cucumbers in a clean towel or cheesecloth and squeeze to remove moisture.

Place drained cucumbers in a bowl, and add all the other ingredients; stir to combine.

Don’t be afraid to ‘change up’ home decor Do you ever feel like you are stuck in a rut?

The same restaurants and coffee every day, the same boring clothes hanging in your closet…it can be easy to fall into routine.

MECKLER It may be time to shake things up a bit. I have recently needed to buy new furniture, my recent basement renovation meant that my sectional is forever stuck in that basement. The new owner of my home was very happy with her free couch and it left me on the hunt for new furniture.

I have always purchased good quality

products that will last me and as a result have usually stayed in browns and blacks to allow me to decorate and re-decorate around neutral colours.

The colours in my homes have shifted from burnt orange to green to teal and copper and these foundational pieces have always anchored my design whims.

This time I threw caution to the wind, I went out and fell in love with a red leather sofa!

It was one of those moments you don’t expect, I think there was music playing in the background and a light shining on this sofa as I sat on it and it whispered ‘take me home’.

In my head I knew that I had a lot of red accessories but many things in my ‘gallery’ were questionable as to whether they would work with this red leather beauty.

When the furniture was delivered I was so pleased!

It is modern with square edges and square tufted seat and back and it fits in perfectly, like it was meant to be. I began playing with my accessories and pictures, arranging them around the room and was soon very pleased with the results.

Even though many people consider red a bold colour choice, it is actually quite accommodating and goes beautifully with other colours.

If you have a neutral colour scheme, try throwing a bit of daring into your space, red or orange or even yellow work so well with brown and black.

Try orange and teal or yellow and coral for a bright sunny interior. These pops of colour will surround your neutral basic pieces and you will be amazed at how fantastic your home will look. Sometimes a few simple accessories or a fun accent chair is all you need to infuse new life into your routine.

Furniture manufactures are going out on a limb with beautiful custom fabrics, it’s more than simply browsing the show room floor – take time to go through their fabric swatches and see what is available in custom upholstery. Go bold with your furniture choices then neutralize the walls and drapery for a refreshing change-up.

I understand the need for routine, the want to play things safe but sometimes you must go outside of your comfort zone.

If you see an item that makes you go ‘wow’, like my red sofa then it’s something to consider for your home. Of course most stores will let you take items home so you can view it in your space which might help if you are indecisive. I say, go for it. Deny the fear and grab onto something amazing for your home, I promise you will smile every time you enter that room.

SCOPE OF JOB Working in A&B’s Bashaw shop, this position is responsible for the mechanical maintenance, repairs, servicing, inspections, and rigging up of A&B’s on-highway trailer and truck fleet. The majority of this position’s duties will be involved with trailer repairs.

RESPONSIBILITIES • Perform preventative maintenance, oil changes, tire changes, mechanical and general maintenance to A&B’s fleet of National Safety Code (NSC) qualified trucks and trailers.

• Troubleshoot, diagnose and complete repairs for A&B’s trailer and vehicle fleet.

• Respond to service calls and perform emergency repairs on vehicles and equipment in field locations as needed.

• Assist with ordering of parts, and maintaining inventory.

• Rigging trucks with the following: Tool boxes, box liners, fire extinguishers, first aid kits, radios, hands free communications systems, etc.

• Pick up and deliver vehicles.

• Oversee and ensure registration and documentation of all light duty fleet vehicles is completed.

• Parts pick-up and hot shot deliveries.

• Tracking and submitting of equipment hours and mileage.

QUALIFICATIONS • Alberta On Highway Heavy Duty Equipment Technician Journey Certificate (interprovincial an asset).

• Authorized CVIP Inspection Technician is an asset.

• Gasoline and diesel vehicle experience required.

• Experience with Ford vehicles an asset.

• All candidates are required to undergo and pass a Drug & Alcohol screening as condition of employment.

• A Valid Driver’s Licence.
