Driving education can be an important tool in a young person’s safety behind the wheel. While it’s not part of Kootenay Lake school district’s curriculum, local high schools do facilitate drivers education in many ways. Mount Sentinal Secondary Principal Glen Campbell discussed the programs and opportunities students have that highlight the importance of driver safety offered through their school each year. R e pre s e nt at i v e s from ICBC visit the South Slocan school as part of the Road Sense program with a speaker who talks about safe driving. The topic details vary but they usually visit in April prior to graduation. “It’s about making good choices,” said Campbell. “And it has an impact.” Another annual program has the drama class team up with local emergency response providers in May. Along with the students, the RCMP, Fire Services, first responders, BC Ambulance, and the BC Coroners Office create a mock accident scenario for other students. “It is a real test that is timed and played

out from start to finish including the final vehicle being towed away,” said Campbell. Once the scenario is complete, students and participants reconvene in the gym to talk about these real scenarios. Emergency services get a chance to explain what is involved and the serious circumstances. “Vehicles are very dangerous,” said Campbell. “It’s also a chance to acknowledge these folks. Most of them are volunteers. We all want the best for (the students) plus the kids are also exposed to these groups that they can join in the future.” The P.A.R.T.Y. program is also a part of Health and Career classes and Planning 10. “These accidents are very real occurrences unfortunately and they are very devastating, especially being a small community. These tragedies remind us to educate,” said Campbell. In the event of a death or serious injury, the school provides counselling to students. “It’s obviously traumatic so we offer grief or trauma counselling,” said the principal. Mt. Sentinal also facilitates driving courses with Driving Solutions. The six to eight week program runs each semes-

ter when there are enough registrants. The course also earns a student two Grade 11 credits. It is arranged through the school’s rental agreement, is after school hours and is more convenient than the kids having to travel to Nelson or Castlegar for driver’s training. Tim Hutteman, principal at Nelson’s L. V. Rogers Secondary echoed the impact of the Road Sense program that sponsors speakers who address the Grade 10 and 12 students at the beginning of May. This year’s speaker was a young man who got behind the wheel when drunk who ended up killing his buddy; Hutteman said this struck home with many students. They focus on those two grades because the Grade 10s who are turning 16 are able to receive their “N” with the graduated licence system; and the Grade 12s are approaching graduation. Local youth Maia Vezina spoke to the students two weeks ago about her experience recovering from a serious vehicle accident after being hit head on by a driver who allegedly had been drinking. “Maia did a fabulous job,” said Hutteman, adding that her presentation gave spe-

cific examples of how to deal with tough social situations with friends who may have been drinking. Those example included taking away their car keys. Another approach to road safety education can be found in the science and physics lab. RCMP Const. Bahnhart is an accident specialist who comes into the physics class room. He speaks to them about the forces of friction, the effects of wet pavement on road skidding, the investigation process and the science behind it. Unique to LVR is their LVTV they can broadcast to classrooms. They use the TV to share weather changes and how that might effect driving conditions with suggestions like speed reduction, change winter tires and seatbelt reminders. In the event of a traumatic accident, all the Kootenay Lake schools have access to counsellors (LVR has two) and there is a District team who address the needs of students and family. Hutteman said Counsellor Todd Kettner is a first responder on the team made up of Nelson City Police, administrators and school counsellors. All this supportive effort goes a long way in a crisis.

After 29 years in traffic law enforcement, including 19 in West Kootenay, RCMP Cpl. John Ferguson has seen a shift in the leading causes of crashes among young people. Where alcohol and lack of seatbelts were once prime factors behind fatalities and serious injuries, today speed and distracted driving is more often to blame. “When I first came here, we would get some very serious crashes with alcohol involved,” Ferguson says. “We haven’t had that lately and I’m hoping and praying we don’t. I find the majority of youth take things seriously when it comes to alcohol and getting behind the wheel.” Likewise, seatbelts are second nature to most youth. Buckling up has always been mandatory in their lifetime, so it’s the first thing they do when they get in a car. Going too fast and not paying attention are now the chief concerns police have with young drivers. “Speed is the No. 1 killer of youth,” Ferguson says. “We’re giving youth a lot of speed-

ing tickets.” Under BC’s graduated license program, a single ticket means probation and a second ticket means losing your license. Even if you’re a month away from being able to remove the N sticker from your vehicle, a ticket will result in a minimum 30-day driving prohibition and starting all over again. Distracted driving is a problem for all ages, but it’s the second-most prevalent cause of crashes among youth. Ferguson says the use of hand-held devices appears to be on the rise. For young drivers, distractions can come not only from cell phones but from having more passengers than allowed. Ferguson says they sometimes catch kids in that situation who are driving home drunk friends. While he appreciates their good intentions, he says they need to plan ahead. “When you’re driving, you need to concentrate. If you put more people in the car, especially someone who’s drunk, that takes away from it.” Ferguson, a Mountie for 34 years, is the acting officer in

charge of West Kootenay Traffic Services. He and four constables investigate all serious and fatal crashes in the region while the Integrated Road Safety Unit has five members who try to reduce crashes in key areas through a combination of enforcement and education. He says when police cars are on the road, people tend to adjust their driving habits accordingly. “If they see a police car on Highway 3A, or 22, all over the place, our problems dimin-

ish. Every police car we can find goes out on long weekends.” So far this year, West Kootenay has had two traffic fatalities, both in the Trail area, one involving a youth. In that case, speed and lack of seatbelts were blamed. In 2013, there were nine fatalities, including one youth who was speeding and texting. In 2012, there were six fatalities, but no youths. Ferguson says it’s never easy to break news of a death to a family, but it’s even

worse when young people are involved. “Children and teenagers are very hard, especially if you have a child the same age,” he says. “It’s a parent’s worst nightmare to get the phone call or the knock on the door.” (These days, families sometimes learn through social media before police have a chance to tell them.) Ferguson’s main message to parents is to know where your children are, restrict their vehicle use, and tell them they can

call you for a ride if they get into trouble. “Make them understand the repercussions of their actions as much as you can. When we’re young we all think we’re invincible.” His message to young people is to use common sense. “I’m not naive. I know kids are going to drink underage. But do it responsibly. If you’re going to a house party, don’t take the car. If you do, don’t drink. Stay away from texting. It’s not so important to look at it while

you’re driving. Five seconds of distraction can have huge consequences.” Ferguson said he wasn’t aware of any incidents following high school graduation ceremonies in Nelson this month and hopes that remains the case throughout the region. “If I wake up Monday and my phone hasn’t rung all weekend, I’m very, very happy. It means no one has died in this area. That’s what I want.”

Rows of gleaming chrome and highly polished custom paint jobs will be showcased at Gyro Park in Trail at the end of the month for the sixth annual Smoke n’ Steel car show. So far, the West Kootenay Smoke n’Steel Car Club is expecting about 100 vehicles, but the number grows weekly, and this year spectators could see some first time entrants roar into town from south of the border. Along with the club’s new executive, new show date (June 28) comes interest from car clubs in the Spokane area, said

first term club president Greg Thompson. “One of our new executives is heavily involved in clubs in the Spokane area and he has found them to be interested so we are waiting to see how many show up,” Thompson explained. “It could be a significant increase on top of what we have had in the past which is about 130 cars.” Usually the “Cruisin’ the Columbia” open car show is in late May or early June, but the date was pushed back this year in hopes of landing on a day full of sunshine instead of rain showers. “It’s worked out well because we had a little more time to or-

Zoom-Zoom goes flash and boom By Zack Spencer

With a flash of lightning beside our car, my co-pilot Alexandra Straub let out a screech as loud as the accompanying crack from the massive flash. Pouring rain in our tiny car made the very first day of the 2014 Mazda rally one to remember. The Mazda MX-5 (Miata) is a car most would associate with sunny, summer top-down driving but this little machine was determined to show what it was made of. The howling wind, torrential rain and debris-covered roads were all taken in stride as we carved our way through the Tennessee mountains on our way to the Brasstown Valley Resort in neighboring Georgia. Over the next three days, we experienced the MX-5 on some of the most dramatic and scenic roads this continent has to offer, and there was money on the line, big money. Last year was the inaugural Mazda Rally, which Alexandra and I won, taking home $10,000 in charity money for Kidsport. As last year’s champions, we had extra pressure

this year to repeat, something we later found out would be much tougher than we had imagined. If you ever take a drive through the south east of the United States, do yourself a favour and divert away from the interstate highway system and experience driving nirvana, traversing the Blue Ridge, Unico and Smokey Mountain ranges. The lush National and State parks along with small towns and twisting river valleys is something to experience. This is a destination for drivers too, especially the “Tail of the Dragon”, a section of

highway 129, just inside the North Carolina border that has 318 turns over an 18km stretch. This is a favourite of motorcycle riders but it is open to anyone wanting to experience back-to-back corners ranging from very tight to wide, sweeping turns. Our run up this road was wide open thanks to steady rain, with a few dozen motorcyclists out for a tour and several photographers taking pictures, then selling them to tourist, the same way you can buy a picture of your rollercoaster ride at the PNE! Paved roads are the place the MX-5 shines, wet or dry. It never felt like the car was out of control, even on the fastest and most aggressive corners. There is so much goodness dialled into this little car that it rewards the driver and passenger hour-after-hour. With a front engine, rear drive setup and perfect weight distribution, the MX-5 has been one of my all-time favourite cars because of its simplicity. The small, light, thrifty dimensions matched to a raspy 2.0L 4-cylinder and 6-speed manual makes for a fantastic power-to-weight distribution, meaning the 160hp engine

might not sound like much on paper but, in practice, it makes the most of every situation. One thing Mazda’s event planners has us do was drive and collect information for each days challenges. All of these were kept secret until the beginning of each drive, including the roads we might travel. A surprise was that some sections were unpaved. Taking Mazda’s brand new MX-5 through forest backroads at speed, meant rocks flying, branches felled from the previous night’s storm kicking up, sliding sideways through corners and pounding over rough and rutted gravel. At the end, the MX-5 showed no signs of wear; it just powered on to the next challenge, which was another surprise, the Atlanta Motorsports Park for an autocross challenge. To say we went from one extreme to the other is an understatement. An hour earlier I was sliding across gravel roads, followed by sliding around a racetrack trying to avoid pylons to dial in my best lap time. As it turns out I did get the second best time of the event but one of those

pylons got in the way, knocking down my time by two seconds, all part of the challenge’s rules. Over the three-day event, Alexandra and I didn’t have one disagreement, I made some navigational errors and so did she. We let it roll, these were long days and we hoped a few small glitches wouldn’t impact our score too much. We also missed one major clue in our guidebook, one that was worth a whopping 50 points. At the end, we had slipped from second place after the first day to fifth place. The Supercar: It’s something anyone of any age can appreciate. The design. The engineering. The way the engine and exhaust purrs – or roars – when you push on the throttle. They are the culmination of the workmanship of talented individuals who dedicate their lives to crafting components that are then distributed globally. Now put

more than 100 of these machines together (111 to be exact) and the appreciation factor goes up 110-fold. To some, Supercars are a gaudy form transportation. An arrogant display of wealth. To others, works of art. But to the group who participated in the second annual Diamond Rally, it’s more than just a showcase of imported engineering or customization. It’s about a great cause. It’s for charity.

I’m not going out on a limb when I say that car enthusiasts love to see amazing cars, regardless of context. What’s more, it’s even cooler when a group of them travel together up one of the most incredible drives in the world: the Sea-to-Sky Highway. What started off last year with 42 cars quickly grew to three digits. Each entering car chose a charity to raise funds for. As the day was ramping up,

the Brian Jessel BMW dealership in Vancouver was overrun with vehicles ranging from a 1957 Ford Thunderbird (it was quite the car back in the day, and still is) to the Lamborghini Aventador. The route would take us along the spectacular Seato-Sky highway, with a stop in Squamish and then the main rendezvous in Whistler. Fellow motorists were pleasantly surprised when they spotted the exotics driving beside them on the world famous road. My ride? – The humble, all new, BMW M4. I say humble because I had nowhere near as much horsepower (this only generates 425) as some, or most, of my fellow drivers.

But what I did have was the “wow” factor. Clad in an extremely eye-catching Austin Yellow Metallic coat, she was quite the sight to see. What made it even more

special? It’s a 6-speed manual. Unsuspecting admirers didn’t catch me overhearing their conversations including, “Dude, this one’s a stick. Awesome.” Yes, some people actually talk like that. Though it may not have garnered nearly as much attention as some of my fellow rallyers, it still brought smiles to people’s faces. That’s what I think the event is all about. So did the drive route. Craig Stowe, Founder of the Diamond Rally and Canada’s own Luxury & Supercar Weekend mentions, “There is a new breed of supercar owners who are rallying together to individually raise awareness and money for the charity of their choice.” He also comments that Vancouver is supercar crazy, and that there are more luxury and supercars per capita then any other city in North America . “There is nothing like 111 spectacular cars rallying up the 99 highway to bring awareness to many worthy charities. The 2011 model year edition of the Ford Mustang, coupe and convertible, came with a more menacing frontal appearance and, under hood, new engines produced more power with less fuel. So, you could also call it the “meaner and leaner” revamp. Appearance changes on the 2011 included new headlights and revised lower

fascias, fenders and grille, plus a power-dome hood that allows additional air cooling to the Mustang’s new engines. At the back, new three-light LED lamps sequentially signal a turn, reminiscent of the muscle car years. The Mustang GT convertible models came with improved body rigidity with 12 per cent more lateral stiffness versus the previous year. In addition to

newly strengthened structural members, under its hood you’ll also find a (race-style) tower-to-tower strut brace. Even the new base 3.7-litre V6 engine packs a punch as it can deliver 305 horsepower and can rev to 7000 rpm. Its rated city/highway fuel economy is an impressive 10.7/6.4 L/100km. And its power-to-weight ratio is almost double the previous base engine offering.

Moving up a trim the Mustang GT has a 5.0-litre V8 under its hood. This engine is also a four-valve, allaluminum engine, only this one is can pump-out 412 horsepower. And sounds great doing it! City/highway fuel consumption is rated at 11.8/7.9 L/100km and a larger (cast aluminum) oil pan also extends oil change intervals.

Ian Harwood Ian Harwood has been involved in the light truck industry for the past 30 years. His career started with the opening of a small 4-wheel drive shop in the early 80s. This shop was involved in custom fabrication, complete 4x4 rebuilds, and sales of off-road related products. This would prepare him for his current position as Manager for Custom Truck Parts, one of the largestaccessory warehouses in Canada. Ian started his journalism career in the late 1090s with a column in a national magazine for automotive enthusiasts. In the spring of 2005 Ian was approached by a local news outlet to write a weekly column. Wilderness exploring, fishing and four wheeling have been his passion since he was a teenager. Tires have unique wear patterns that are related to the suspension and the alignment. Should you switch the tires in a crisscross pattern, it could affect the alignment and lead to a bumpy ride. These scenarios can depend on the vehicle and the tire, however. Certain vehicles have tires of different sizes in the rear and front, which prevents front-to-back rotation. There are also cars that have tires that are unidirectional, where they are specific to one side of the car and asymmetrical, with a tread pattern that changes from the inside of the tire to the outside. Though these tires are rare, you can’t rotate them at all. Tire rotation is adviseable to preserve balanced handling, traction and even outer tire wear. But how often should it be done? Many tires should be rotated every 3,000 to 5,000 miles, even if they don’t show signs of wear. Some service stations will do tire rotation at the same time that oil changes are done because the car is already on a lift. Don’t expect tire rotation to correct wear problems due to worn mechanical parts or as the result of improper inflation pressure. Rotation is not the only tire maintenance task to do to ensure safe tires.
